Targos

Alalla nods. "I’ll be ready by the time you are."

While Erevain attunes to the armour, Al goes to rifle through Targos’ supplies. She finds what she is looking for after a moment: a crude Orcish leather shield, kept from a raid to be used in an emergency or to be recycled.

She takes it and a pitch brush into a corner and frowns over the shield. She was trying to run a proper tribe. If not now, then later. After some grumbling, she paints a couple of Dwarvish runes on the shield. One for the word for ‘freedom,’ and one for the verb ‘to choose.’

Freedom Choosers is a stupid name, her obnoxious subconscious drawls.

Yeah, well it’s not meant to be translated directly, she snaps back. They can choose a better one when we have a minute.

She puts a cover over her shield and goes to find Erevain. "Ready, melindo?"

Alalla nods at the soldiers at the gate, then walks through, Erevain at her side. After a while, she stops to uncover the shield. She tightens the strap around her glaive so that it stays at the top unassisted. She shows it to Erevain. "This stands for the clan name," she gestures to the runes. "It means we come peacefully, since the weapon is useless bound to the shield, and the shield is too high to protect us.

They'll see that we come from the town, but this is only used by chieftains that want to speak to each other, so it's not something that outsiders really have the opportunity to learn about. Even if they are suspicious, they should hopefully be curious enough to let us approach, and the custom is strong. Here."
She hands Erevain the standard. "The chieftain isn't supposed to carry it," she says sheepishly. "Raise it high."

OOC:
Short rest achieved by any who needed one.
Erevain takes the standard and holds it high. "It is good to know you can merely summon it back when you have need of it."

The elf warrior places a hand upon Erestor's armor and speaks an arcane word. A thin mist covers his body for a moment, and when it clears he appears as a burly, green-skinned orc raider. He nods grimly at Alalla.
Dec 2, 2018 3:19 am
Alalla tries to smile, but her stomach is too knotted. "Leave the talking to me. Your Orcish accent is better than my Elvish one, but it will still make you suspect." She takes a deep breath. "Now, let's go do something drastic."

Alalla and Erevain march on, straight towards the camped army
Dec 2, 2018 3:52 am
Alalla and Erevain stride out into the darkness, standard held high. They carry no torches, for the gathered army needs no light to see their faces or their standard.

Jeers and gruff cat-calls are the first the couple hears from the army ahead, followed by coarse whispers and the ring of metal from readied weapons.

They approach the first line of sentries. The orc warriors bare their tusks in ferocious grins, but make no move to stop the heroes' progress. "Warchief Ghotrag will see you." They watch with bloodshot eyes as the couple continues forward.
Dec 2, 2018 3:54 am
A hundred yards closer, just before a large bonfire, stands an imposing orc chieftain in plate armor - presumably Ghotrag. He stands a full foot taller than Alalla, and likely weighs twice as much. Just behind and to his right is another orc bearing a long pike topped with a severed human head. A shield strapped near the top of the weapon sports the painted symbol of a red spear. A score of other orcs stand close by, watching.

Ghotrag stomps forward with a growl. "What is this? Your blood runs too thin for you to be chief." The nearby orcs echo the sentiment, some chortling and others spitting in her direction.
Dec 2, 2018 4:11 am
Alalla withholds her frown at the severed head. That’s not a good sign for her cause. But she isn’t here for Ghotrag, specifically.

She draws up to her full height and bears her tusks in a sneer. "I am Chieftess Alalla, and I won my position by combat, like any chief. If you doubt me, you can challenge me yourself." Alalla looks him up and down. "You are smaller than the one I killed for my chieftainship." She waves a hand dismissively. "But that’s not why I came. I want to know who you fight for. Why have you allied yourself with goblins and giants? What’s in it for you?"

Ghotrag's upper lip rises in a snarl that seems to resonate all the way from his iron boots. His hand drifts toward the axe at his side as though willing to take Alalla up on her challenge. "We fight for Gruumsh! Goblins and giants will help us spill the blood of every human, dwarf, and elf in these Ten Towns." He chuckles darkly, then points at the head atop the pike. "Nine Towns."

He levels a finger at Alalla. "You claim to be chief, but you walk within the walls of a human town. Where is your clan, mongrel?"
Dec 2, 2018 4:30 am
Alalla forces her face to remain smooth in the face of the orc’s insult. She is better than Ghotrag. And she isn’t here for him. She’s here for the others listening. "They are North. They don’t need me to babysit them, and I am busy. And you never answered my question. You said you fight for Gruumsh, and that you are going to kill everyone in the Towns. But what’s in it for you?"

Ghotrag steps closer, red eyes boring into Alalla's. "Shedding their blood makes ours sing, mongrel. Do you not feel the call to drink their lifeblood, and revel in it?" He raises his voice, bellowing out to the surrounding orcs. "Their pain is our nectar! And Gruumsh drives us on to greater victories!" The massive orc chief raises his hands high as the army erupts in yet more blood-curdling ululations. "For Gruumsh, we slay them all!"

He fixes his stare again upon Alalla. "Your clan, if you have one, is not here. You are nothing." His hand grips the haft of his axe.
Dec 2, 2018 5:10 am
Alright. Here we go.

Al raises her voice to a shout. "I feel the call of the anger and bloodlust Gruumsh inflicts upon me. They are chains, held by a slave master of a god. A means of controlling me. But I reject them. I reject him.

I am nothing? You are nothing. Gruumsh doesn’t care for you, or any of the orc race. You are all a tool for a petty being’s revenge. A god of conquest who has conquered nothing and no one but your small mind. His vendetta has left our people in squalor. We aren’t lesser because the other races wronged us. We are lesser because of Gruumsh and his demands."

Alalla looks around at the gathered crowd. "My tribe and I seek more. We want freedom to make our own choices, to make what we want of our lives. We fight for that.

We don’t serve Gruumsh. You don’t have to serve Gruumsh either. His power is less than you believe. I fought his avatar to claim my chieftainship, and all he could take was my eye. Come with me, and we will fight him together."

Alalla turns back to the Ghotrag. She smacks her breastplate with a gauntleted hand, making a ringing sound. "Challenge me if you like, Ghotrag. I’ll leave your corpse in the snow and take your position, too."

"Kick his grarch."

Words. First from Alalla's lips, then passing like a wildfire through the orcish troops. Whispers of shock build to an unnerving crescendo.

Ghotrag's eyes widen at every word Alalla speaks. With a cry of rage he takes up his axe. "Daughter of Lies! Daughter of Nothing! I will drag your corpse to your pathetic tribe and kill each of them with my bare hands. I am a true disciple of the One-Eyed God!"

Corded muscles bulging, he charges at Alalla.

"Show me the strength Gruumsh gives his disciples, then! I will show you how little it matters." Al draws her sword and charges, flames licking up the blade. Her first swing is almost a miss, and correcting it costs her her footing. Her heart stops for a moment as she hits the ground, but she is quicker than Ghotrag, and she rolls to her feet to strike again. And again and again.

Alalla’s flaming sword is a blur, playing games with Ghotrag’s night vision. Just before her last strike she extinguishes the blade, and she can see Ghotrag’s eyes searching for the now invisible blade. By the time she reignites it it is too late for him to parry or deflect the blow. Al slices through the gap between the plates on his arm, seriously damaging, then cauterizing, the muscles and tendons at his elbow joint.

Goat-rag takes 160 damage and must make 5 wisdom saves or be afraid of Al.

Alalla's onslaught would have easily overwhelmed any lesser warrior. Despite all her wrath however, Ghotrag remains standing, axe raised high. His breath comes in great bellows, but manages to let out a derisive chuckle. "The rumors about you are true, Alalla." He throws her back a moment. "You are strong and skilled... but you burn too bright, too fast. With Gruumsh guiding my anger, you will die this day." He takes a deep breath and lets out a roar of hatred. His axe clips Alalla's shoulder, but it is his sheer determination to press on in spite of the punishment he has received that makes her begin to wonder what it will take to bring him down.

As the thought strikes her, she feels a tremor take hold in her heart - Bilewing's heart.

Ghotrag has entered a barbarian rage, and so now takes half damage from Bludgeoning, Piercing, Slashing.

Al takes 30 slashing damage, and Ghotrag regains 10 hp.

Alalla is frightened until the end of Ghotrag's next turn. She also loses one hit die.

Ghotrag is at 79/229 hp.

The Warchief growls as the fire sword continues to bite his flanks. "You have no passion! You have no cause! Gruumsh gives our people strength, and with it I will cleave you in two!" His jaw drops as Alalla parries more of his attacks. When he lets out another bellow, however, he notices Alalla's gasp as her heart quivers in response. "Your weakness is made bare to me, Daughter of Cowardice!"

Alalla loses another hit die and is still frightened. Good news is that he is still attacking recklessly.

Never has one of Alalla's enemies taken such a beating and still stand strong before her. Ghotrag only seems to get angrier as the fight wears on. With a savage swing he tries to disarm Alalla, but she keeps hold of the weapon. With a terrible growl he drops his own axe and grabs her sword in both hands. His head comes forward and down to smash her nose against her cheek, at the same time twisting with frightening strength. The flames of the sword wink out as it falls to the snow, and Ghotrag grabs it. Its flames reignite, coloring the Warchief's grin a fierce red and orange.

Alalla feels doubt gnaw at her heart like starving dog at a wooden stick. Is this how her life will end? Slaughtered before her husband, and sent straight to Gruumsh?

"Ghotrag now has the flame sword, and Alalla loses another hit die and is still frightened.

Before the shield even hits the snow Alalla is attacking, but her fear leaves her unfocused and her attempt to throw her glaive leaves the weapon going wide.
