As ship's surgeon, responsible for the health of the crew, I am certain Srisa would have vouched for the health benefits of water-down alcohol on the job.

OOC:
Shes a proper sailor. Everyone is expected to have their rum ration on a daily basis and watered ale is standard fare. So long as the drink doesnt interfere with ship function, she largely doesnt notice drinking.

I know everything about where we are and the path forward is safe.

Zephyranthes is Air Genasi, Storm Sorcerer, Quatermaster, and was up in the crow's nest, but Feather Fall'd onto the deck and went to tell the Captain (though I thought Helane was on deck with everyone else.)

Zale is Water Genasi, Drunken Master Monk, Cook/Brewmaster, and is on deck.

Both Z names, I know. ;-)

Yeah, Zeph is on the deck with the captain. He didn't want to keep shouting. He is not the normal man in the nest, he just like being up high. So Ox would have scared another man in the nest.

Zeph, you quickly figure out where you're at on the charts, though it is unfortunate that the pirates have had a stranglehold here for so long. The charts readily available to legitimate sailors don't feature any kind of depth markings. Judging by your visual assessment earlier though, you could plot a course to the island you think.
OOC:
In an effort to reduce some of the decision lag/analysis paralysis that can plague PBP, generally I will have an officer of the appropriate type making ship-based decisions. In this case, as Quartermaster and the one responsible for routes and such, Zeph will make the call on sailing deeper down the channel, or investigating the island in the distance. I will try to make sure that everyone has a chance to take the reins as appropriate. :) So Zeph, what'll it be?

OOC:
Damn my previous low perception roll. Caution it is.
After a few moments of self deliberation he answers. "We best keep on. No need to risk the ship yet. These depths are not well mapped." He throws his hood on then adds. "But I can find out. Haven't been in the sea for a spell." He pauses another moment. "We keep to the channel for now. I'll go check the depths." He runs over to a railing and leaps into the water.
OOC:
Activating my cloak. Hoping to get a better read on these waters.

Haha. Much better.

Zale looks down at the lead line he was in the process of unspooling. "I guess we're not using this," he mutters, stowing the line.

Haul those sheets in! Quartermaster's investigatin' the conditions. We'll hold here for a bit. Helane calls out as Zeph leaps into the sea.

Once underwater, you can see that the visibility isn't terribly good. The silt has been stirred up pretty well, which is abnormal, given that you don't see any vessels nearby currently. Once under, you can see that it would have been a mistake to sail towards the island. While it isn't a full sandbar, there is a swell off in the distance that would surely have foundered your craft had you hit it.

After a few minutes the genasi breaks the waters surface. Reaching the ships hull he climbs up the jacobs ladder. "Ha, glad I did that. No way we make land here. Shove off, further into the channel." He makes his way to his quarters. "I'll update our map for the furture. Sunan, you're my eyes." He says to Sunan, a mate he entrusts to take his command on deck while he is not there.

Sunan nods, his cleanshaven brow beaded with sweat. He starts to bark orders at the rigging mates to set the sails and to make course for deeper down the channel. The seas remain calm for a few hours before a call goes up from the crow's nest. SAIL HO!

For those topside, you can see that another ship is indeed on the horizon, and you are sailing right for one another. Based on general shipfaring knowledge, you have about 15 minutes until you are atop one another.

Distance between craft: 16,000 feet

OOC:
Can we see a flag? Zeph is not topside.

OOC:
Unless you have something that lets you clearly see detail at 3 miles out, not yet. If someone had eyes of the eagle or the like, you could see it at 2 miles, I think. It'll be some time before you are close enough to spot. :)

OOC:
A spyglass only sees 2 miles?
Dec 28, 2018 12:56 am
OOC:
Per DMG, on a clear day with no obstruction, you can see something ~2 miles off. I'm saying on the middle of the relatively open sea, you could see with the naked eye out to the horizon enough to spot a ship getting closer. A spyglass doubles the apparent size of something you view through it. So you could start to make out a flag at about 2 miles, like telling that there IS a flag. But any details you would need to be closer to a mile off. With a spyglass. IF no nasty weather blows in. >:-)

Copy.
Zeph is working on the map and is letting other deal with the it, unless called upon.

Srisa waits patiently, breathing air calmly. As a Princess of the Eastern Reefs, she was no stranger to warfare or strife. Indeed, the Triton noble families placed the martial virtues of courage, discipline, and honour on the highest moral rung, and engaged in extensive warfare throughout the seas. She had seen the seas turn red with blood, and slew many with her own hands. Of course, this was always with seasoned royal guards at her side, ready to lay their lives down without hesitation to protect her. Out here, riding on the very the edge of the world, she would have no such protection.

She smiled a smile of such heartfelt joy that anyone who looked upon her at that moment would have thought she just got her greatest wish granted.

Seeing Srisa's smile, Zale aches with longing. He swallows hard, his throat like sand. He takes another swig from his flask. What he wants, it cannot be. She is royalty, and he, a half-breed nobody. But if he can just spend the rest of his life making her smile like that, it will be enough. It will have to be.
