Sea Stories: Chapter 1

Dec 6, 2018 7:28 pm
Some of you have been aboard Selûne's Grace before, for some this is your first time aboard the vessel. Either way, over the last two days you've fallen into the comfortable working pattern that you've come to expect of one another from your times adventuring together in the past. This morning was no different from those previous: warm salty air blowing steadily across the crystalline teal waters of the sea. No clouds in the sky, and overall a very happy crew, you've been steady making your way towards the mouth of Asavir's Channel.

You had spent nearly a week before departing in meetings with Helane Mardon, the captain of the vessel. The half-elf has earned her reputation as a hard-ass captain and a vicious combatant. In your meetings she was confident and had the kind of personality that screamed "I'm in charge" without having to make an effort to that end. Aboard the Grace, this was even more obvious as the crew worked together like a well-oiled clockwork machine.

Amid the creaking boards and slightly rolling deck, you find yourselves on the main deck, talking in a circle with the Captain, the other officers, and their support staff.

Alright all, we're a few hours out from the mouth of the channel and the chances of us being set upon just went up three damned fold. Hopefully you've all managed to get your folks back into operational shape the last few days. We're goin' on three sets of four hour watches starting now. I want to make sure when we get hit, we're fresh. Set your crews. Now, discussing combat plans, as we're sailing under new privateer papers, we've got the salvage rights, so I want to aim for not sinking any other ships, unless we have to. It'll make us all filthy rich if we can capture one or two and bring 'em home as part of this. Anyone have any open concerns before we move on?

"No ma'am. The sea and sky's have been in our favor, let's hope they stay that way." He steps back then leaps up with a flourish of wind as he grabs the shrouds and climbs to the crowd nest, his typical spot.

Gonna love learning and using sailing terms. 😁

Oxandren scoffed. Not at the captain, he had the utmost respect for her, but at the mention of concerns "If we had any concerns we never would of stepped foot on this ship!" he said with a lighthearted laugh and cheers of his mug with Durric "But in all seriousness you need to talk some sense into Srisa, last time she pulled an arrow out of my back she was fuckin’ three sheets to the wind and did more damage taking it out than when it went in!" he said again laughing.

Shouting from halfway up the shrouds. "The only concerns Ox has is running low on ale." He sends a playful gust down his way then continues to climb.

Seated on a cushion perched on a chair rocking with the ship's gentle sway, a slight and slender figure reads from a small leather bound book. Her almost naturally pouting lips softly whisper the words as her eyes flutter over them at a feverish pace. Wind-tousled tresses of fiery red hair tumble down from her bowed head, stark in colour on her fair skin and white shirt. A silver anchor on a slim chain around her neck catches the noon sun. Resting on the stitching along the sides of her leggings is a rugged leather holster, in which an elegantly carved wand lies in wait.

The voice of the captain rouses Miri from her reading. Still too relaxed compared to the many others hurrying about the deck in various directions, the mage gives the captain a disinterested look over her shoulder as she listens. The two more lively voices of Ox and Zeph she gives a little more attention.
"It wouldn't do for you pair to have concerns now would it? When you two start worrying, events must have really taken a dark turn," she smiles, recalling more than a few instances of the aeromancers' antics. Those two were good friends, ones whom Miri had shared (or perhaps endured) drinks, adventures, laughs and fights with. Their carefree attitude was one she empathised with, up to a point.
Suddenly remembering the captain's hanging question, she cast an eye out over the water and calls, "It would behoove us to listen out. The pirate clans of the Nelanther take this as their raiding season, as much against eachother as visitors like us. We might hear them coming... if we don't get caught in a crossfire between to ther clans."
Dec 7, 2018 12:28 am
Oxandren roars as his hair is mussed up by Zephyranthes. He returns the jest by placing an illusion of barbed wire on the rope ladder right where he is about to place his hand.
Dec 7, 2018 6:35 am
Leaning over the railing, an 'elf' stares out at the sea with her mind focused elsewhere. Deciding to dress the part of a dashing corsair, her motley clothing is only matched by her blue-tinted skin. Everywhere she goes odd looks follow, but she doesn't mind the attention anymore.

Someday I will find that sea-devil. Cecillia thinks absentmindedly before processing the captain's question. "More money is always good. Are we to take any of these pirates...alive?" She asks inquisitively, not completely used to this lifestyle.
Dec 7, 2018 7:00 am
Joyfully climbing the genasi reaches up for the next rope when h sees the wire. It's too late to change positioning and his hand misses the rope trying to avoid the wire.

With little effort he grabs the rope just below stopping his decent. "Haha. Nice one Ox, but I'm just too quick for you." He has had an uncanny way of not falling, ever. You always seems much more alive while climbing or up in his nest.

Srisa watched the sky with wide eyes and her unsuppressible smile. The sky was the first thing she saw when she came to the Surface World, and the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. A canvas that stretches into infinity, displaying an ever-changing palette of colors in an ever-changing configuration of suns and clouds and moons and stars and lightning and comets and ... how was she ever going to return to her kingdom?

She watched as a fleet of carefree clouds soared toward the mainland. Her people told a story about the clouds, that they were water born of the ocean but seduced by the sun and the sky to leave. They would travel the sky but unwittingly head toward The Land and crash into mountains, their great adventure in the sky turning into centuries of tedium trapped within mud and muck. But eventually, all water found its way back to the ocean, no matter how lost it got.

She sighed. She was the cloud right now. Maybe she should quit while she's ahead before the muck. But Srisa of the Eastern Reef was never very good at doing the wise thing.

It was then she heard the Captain summoning the crew of the Selûne's Grace. Captain Helane Mardon, what a beautiful creature! She wore the mantle of authority with ease, and that comforted Srisa. At the end of the day, no matter how bad things could get, the Captain was in charge and she knew what she was doing. Srisa fell into the crowd quickly, blending in with the low ranking serving men and women of this fantastic vessel.

When Ox piped up, she laughed with the fullness of her heart, not caring that her voice sounded ridiculous in air for a change (maybe she was getting used to it?). She retorted with feigned consternation.

"Hey, you can't blame me Ox, I have to drink a lifetime's supply in the next few years; we don't have booze in the Eastern Reefs! Besides, if you had quit squirming like a cabin boy who just seen his first battle, I would have been able to figure out which of the three of you was the real you!"

She couldn't help but laugh again. Not at Ox, but just out of pure joy for the moment she was living in. On the Surface, things could be brutish and nasty at times, but she was always surrounded by good people, and she was as free as a cloud in the beautiful sky.

Zeph, as you climb into the crow's nest, you scan the sea around you. Thankfully, it's crystal clear from up here. Just off the starboard side of the craft, just at the edge of the horizon, you see the faint green-brown line of an island. More than that, you can't spot, taken as you are with the glittering waters.

I'm looking forward to the glut of nautical terms and craziness we'll get into!

Zale straightens slightly from his slouch by the port rail at the Captain's call to order. The water genasi cook and brewmaster has been watching Srisa for the past few minutes. Though he hasn't said as much, maybe not even admitting it to himself either, Zale is awed and maybe a little intimidated by the triton. He may or may not have pretended to be unwell on one or two occasions just to see her in the sick bay. He definitely feels a little flutter in his chest every time she talks about drinking his booze, which to his surprise she took quite a liking to.

"No concerns here, Captain. Avoid sinking ships, if possible, got it. And what about their crews?"
Dec 9, 2018 3:58 pm
From atop the mast a shout rings out. LAND HO!
Dec 9, 2018 5:02 pm
"LAND HO!" Srisa echoed.

Land! How exotic. I hope we see a Tree again! And those creatures that swim in the air!
Dec 9, 2018 9:32 pm
"Are there any pirates on it?" Cecillia asks giddily, frantically searching for this island. I should've brought a spyglass.
OOC:

"Nelanther, at last," Miri sighs sarcastically. "Right on time." With a flourish, she whips her book onto a buckle at her belt, then glides over to the starboard railing to confirm the view on the horizon. She hops over the railing, taking a seat atop it and dangling her legs over the side. Stretching and leaning back to get a better view of the crow's nest, she hollers up to Zeph, but to the others on dedk as well. "If we can see them, they can see us. Better hope its a clanless isle!"
Dec 9, 2018 11:49 pm
"We'll find out soon enough." He leaps out of the crows nest and falls toward the ground. Just a few feet from the ground a vortex of air appears right below him and he softly lands. "I'll inform the captain." He runs off to tell the captain.

What've you found Quartermaster Ariti? Helane calls as she pulls a sleek brass spyglass from an oiled holster on her hip. As she follows your indication of the land, she turns back to you. What is our course Ariti? Are these islands safe to approach, or should we continue along the channel?

Zale, as you stare out towards the land, you can barely tell there's anything there.

Zephyranthes, go ahead and give me a Wisdom (navigator's tool check). DC 15 to figure out where you are and the likely risk to your craft.

"I don't see anything," Zale mutters, taking a swig from the gourd at his hip.

What's Helane's policy on sailors drinking on the job? Given Zale's monastic tradition and his job as cook/brewmaster I imagine he might be given some latitude, but I don't know...would that be unfair?

Zeph, you quickly figure out where you're at on the charts, though it is unfortunate that the pirates have had a stranglehold here for so long. The charts readily available to legitimate sailors don't feature any kind of depth markings. Judging by your visual assessment earlier though, you could plot a course to the island you think.
OOC:
In an effort to reduce some of the decision lag/analysis paralysis that can plague PBP, generally I will have an officer of the appropriate type making ship-based decisions. In this case, as Quartermaster and the one responsible for routes and such, Zeph will make the call on sailing deeper down the channel, or investigating the island in the distance. I will try to make sure that everyone has a chance to take the reins as appropriate. :) So Zeph, what'll it be?
Dec 21, 2018 8:43 am
OOC:
Damn my previous low perception roll. Caution it is.
After a few moments of self deliberation he answers. "We best keep on. No need to risk the ship yet. These depths are not well mapped." He throws his hood on then adds. "But I can find out. Haven't been in the sea for a spell." He pauses another moment. "We keep to the channel for now. I'll go check the depths." He runs over to a railing and leaps into the water.

Haul those sheets in! Quartermaster's investigatin' the conditions. We'll hold here for a bit. Helane calls out as Zeph leaps into the sea.

Once underwater, you can see that the visibility isn't terribly good. The silt has been stirred up pretty well, which is abnormal, given that you don't see any vessels nearby currently. Once under, you can see that it would have been a mistake to sail towards the island. While it isn't a full sandbar, there is a swell off in the distance that would surely have foundered your craft had you hit it.
Dec 23, 2018 10:11 am
After a few minutes the genasi breaks the waters surface. Reaching the ships hull he climbs up the jacobs ladder. "Ha, glad I did that. No way we make land here. Shove off, further into the channel." He makes his way to his quarters. "I'll update our map for the furture. Sunan, you're my eyes." He says to Sunan, a mate he entrusts to take his command on deck while he is not there.

Sunan nods, his cleanshaven brow beaded with sweat. He starts to bark orders at the rigging mates to set the sails and to make course for deeper down the channel. The seas remain calm for a few hours before a call goes up from the crow's nest. SAIL HO!

For those topside, you can see that another ship is indeed on the horizon, and you are sailing right for one another. Based on general shipfaring knowledge, you have about 15 minutes until you are atop one another.

A spyglass only sees 2 miles?
Dec 28, 2018 12:56 am
OOC:
Per DMG, on a clear day with no obstruction, you can see something ~2 miles off. I'm saying on the middle of the relatively open sea, you could see with the naked eye out to the horizon enough to spot a ship getting closer. A spyglass doubles the apparent size of something you view through it. So you could start to make out a flag at about 2 miles, like telling that there IS a flag. But any details you would need to be closer to a mile off. With a spyglass. IF no nasty weather blows in. >:-)

Srisa waits patiently, breathing air calmly. As a Princess of the Eastern Reefs, she was no stranger to warfare or strife. Indeed, the Triton noble families placed the martial virtues of courage, discipline, and honour on the highest moral rung, and engaged in extensive warfare throughout the seas. She had seen the seas turn red with blood, and slew many with her own hands. Of course, this was always with seasoned royal guards at her side, ready to lay their lives down without hesitation to protect her. Out here, riding on the very the edge of the world, she would have no such protection.

She smiled a smile of such heartfelt joy that anyone who looked upon her at that moment would have thought she just got her greatest wish granted.
Jan 2, 2019 6:12 am
Seeing Srisa's smile, Zale aches with longing. He swallows hard, his throat like sand. He takes another swig from his flask. What he wants, it cannot be. She is royalty, and he, a half-breed nobody. But if he can just spend the rest of his life making her smile like that, it will be enough. It will have to be.
Jan 2, 2019 6:50 am
Oblivious to the subtle interaction, Cecillia does what she does best: Pull out her Dulcimer and quietly sings to pass the time.

"Guard your temples from destruction
Make sure no one goes inside..."
Jan 4, 2019 7:52 pm
Oxandren hears the call to sail and he too, cracks a smile. His eyes were not as keen as some of the others on the ship, but he knew what that call meant and he knew a vessel would be on them shortly. Nothing brought him more joy than boarding a ship and watching pirates flee as they felt the wrath of Valkur. Even now as he waited, his eyes sparked with lightning flashes and the smell of ozone emanated from him in all directions. He fastened his shield to his arm and stood ready at the rail.
Jan 4, 2019 10:46 pm
Miri casts a curious glance up from her book. "We are to fight?" she inquires to no one in particular. "How dramatic." Her tone is almost sarcastic, but anyone who knows her well enough knows its simply theatrical. With a whip, she snaps her book shut. With a practiced twirl she fastens it to two buckles on her belt. Her showboating out of the way, she looks out over the sea to assess their opponents.
Jan 6, 2019 4:42 pm
Over the next five minutes, there's a flurry of activity as sailors rush from belowdecks to their stations at various points on the ship. Those with access to spyglasses can just start to make out the details of the ship on the horizon. The ship is dark and currently has no flag raised that you can see, though they are under full sail. Both crafts are sailing perpendicular to the wind at this point, with the breeze coming off your port side, towards the islands.

Helane calls out across the decks, Make ready the mangonel! Make sure the ballista has bolts aplenty! All hands prepare to repel boarders!

You can see Oriesli, the hill dwarf bosun's mate, pick up a heavy stone along with Dread, the tiefling deckhand. They wrestle it into the oil-sealed basket of the fore-mounted weapon. A flurry of human deckhands rush forward, gripping the lines of the mangonel, ready to launch the projectile on orders.

About ten feet in front of the mangonel, more of the deckhands pull the heavy canvas cover off the crew-sized bow of their ballista, while two carpenters rose from belowdecks carrying the massive bolts the weapon was known for.

Distance between craft: 11,500 feet
OOC:
If there is anything you'd like to do in the next five minute block, let me know. For this "combat approach", I'll be doing 5 minute turns for each crew. Once we're engaged, we'll switch to normal round mechanics.

After extinguishing the cook fires, Zale returns topside to await battle orders. Eyes focused on the enemy ships, he takes a big drink from his flask.

Cecillia remains in place during the flurry of activity, her strumming quickens, becoming almost frantic. Finally she stows her dulcimer, staring intently at the approaching ship.
Jan 7, 2019 5:33 am
Srisa glances over at Zale and reads his mind.

She resists the urge to dive into the water, summon her royal seahorse war mount, and charge off to battle. She would do this the surface world way.
OOC:

Jan 7, 2019 6:17 am
OOC:
Just want to put it out there that Zale is more inclined towards repelling boarders / defending Selûne's Grace and the captain, as opposed to boarding the enemy vessel. Defensive rather than offensive. That's Zale.
Jan 7, 2019 10:14 pm
Exiting from his chambers onto the deck. "What happened. I was only in there for 5 minuites?" He begins to shout orders at the crows nest. "Keep vigil on that ship. Call out distance and for the sake of the gods let us know the flag this time."
Jan 9, 2019 6:01 pm
Another five minutes passes by, both in a rush and taking forever all at the same time. The ships continue to close, those with height or tool support can see that the incoming ship still has no flag flying. Commands have been silent for the most part, though one of the topmen calls out from above, I make it a little over a mile out Cap'n! No colors flown!

Helane curses and storms to her cabin, returning in short order with her cutlass strapped to her waist.

It looks like we'll have a chance to blood the crew sooner than I'd hoped. MISTER ARITI, TAKE TO THE HELM, COORDINATE OUR APPROACH! she barks quickly, moving to the bow, spyglass in hand.

Distance between craft: 7,000 feet

Oxandren quietly hummed a sea shanty to himself, and song that he sometimes sang while in battle. He waited patiently and says to the crew "Valkur smiles on us and is with us this day."
Jan 12, 2019 5:41 pm
A dull thud, followed by muffled curses, is heard coming from one of the lifeboats. The canvas cover is thrown aside, and a hungover halfling pops up, rubbing his head where he hit it waking up. "What the hell is with all the fucking commotion?! Ow, my bloody head!" For a sailor, Roscoe Silversail has never been very good with the drink. He tumbles out of the lifeboat and onto the deck. "Dammit, Zale, that brew of yours is the shi---WHOA! Are we under attack?!?!" Sweeping his fine but well worn coat aside, Roscoe draws his rapier and licks his lips. If there's one thing the scrappy halfling loves, it's a good fight.

Srisa wished she was charging ahead on her giant sea horse, but that's not how things worked on the surface of the world. Standing around before a battle with nothing to do was like torture to Srisa's action-oriented nature, so she got to the business of aiding the surface people with their war machines. These rock-lobbers didn't promise even a hint of the glory of a mounted charge, but she couldn't argue with their effectiveness. And Ox was already there, one of her favorite drinking mates.

"Need some help there, Ox? Wouldn't want you to hurt yourself before the big battle!" she chides, but her smile reveals that it is meant to be affectionate rather than hurtful.

She lifts the rock with ease. She remembers a time when she was new to the surface world and just keeping her head up all day and her lungs breathing in and out was a struggle. The experience had toughened her like nothing else.

No, no of course n..." then drops the rock and grabs at his lower back in an over exaggerated way roaring with laughter. He elbows Srisa in the ribs and says "Maybe I should leave this to you, hahaha!" he claps her on the back and continues loading the weapons.

At long last, after many tense minutes you see a blood red flag flutter out over the other ship's mast. No nation or group you know of flies a single field of red.

As you close, Helane gives the order and the mangonel creaks and launches her load at the enemy vessel. At the same time, you all notice a massive stone hurtling from the other vessel towards your own sails.

The magical assault on the helmsman is incredibly effective. The three magical bolts cause the elf at the helm to stagger back slightly, just as the blob of water crushes into his chest, knocking his lifeless body over. As he falls, the wheel spins and the enemy ship careens away from your vessel. You managed to render them actionless this turn! You can see them scramble to get a new sailor to the helm.

Long ass tomorrow... my apologies!
Thanks to Mr. Ariti and Miri's efforts, your craft surges towards the reeling enemy craft, closing the ground to the point that your deckhands manage to throw grappling hooks over the edge, hooking the rails of the other ship. With a heave and quick handwork, you find your ships lashed together.

For those that would like to board, it will take an athletics or acrobatics check (DC15) to cross the gap of the moving ships safely. If you fail, make a Dexterity save (DC10) to avoid falling into the ocean!

Miri casts her eyes around the confounding sight of her companions enthusiastically hurling themselves into the water like lemmings with a bloodlust. She gives a sickeningly smug grin as she watches and begins to surreptitiously wave her wand. With theatrical nonchalance she struts to the edge of the boat, and just as it looks as though she might stride all the way into the water, a shimmering mist envelops her.

The sea fades from view and the half-elf enters a new scene: a bridge of shining white stone spanning a wondrously still and impossible dense forest below. The air itself seems to glitter. Only the breeze and pleasantly alien birdsong punctuates the silence. The bridge extends into mist on both sides. Miri takes in the view as she takes the brisk walk from one cloud into the other.

Emerging again from mist on the opposing ship, the sound of combat once again fills her ears. She holds her arms wide and surveys the scene with the same anticipation of a sculptor observing an exquisite but unformed slab of marble. With nary a glance and a flick of her wrist, a beam of silvery white rushes forth from her wand toward an unfortunate sailor.

The first boarding action by the Grace's sailors is anything but graceful, with several missing the leap or stumbling and landing on the other ship sprawled on their faces. The ridiculous display causes a moment of mirth in the pirates on the other vessel as they break into laughter at the sight.

You can see a dozen armed and armored individuals on the other ship, now advancing towards your party. They look underfed, and some far weaker than you'd suspect hardened criminals to be. Several have patches over an eyes, and two have pegged legs.

Srisa hits the water like an Olympic diver, leaving barely any splash behind. It feels so good to be back in her native environment where her limbs don't weigh a ton and you can move around in three dimensions with ease. She almost second guesses her decision to visit the surface world, but vanishes the thought.

She's got a job to do.

She uses her momentum and gains speed, all the while calling upon the waves to propel her upward. The ocean obeys, and extends itself up to the deck of the ship, making a river for Srisa to swim up. She breaches the magical river like a dolphin, and lands with a splash on the deck, spraying the guffawing pirates with sea water.

Glistening with water, she draws her ancestral sword and beckons to the pirates to come hither.

Apologies Miri, yes, your ray of frost did kill one of the pirates before your group boarded. You brought it down from 13 combatants to 12. :)
Srisa lands and the faces of the nearest pirates blanch shock white at the sight. Sailors all along the Channel have heard of the tritons, but mostly as threat and boogeymen, destined to slaughter them if they fell overboard. Srisa, you have advantage against pirates 1, 2, and 3.

A crackling white beam of frost blasts the middle of the pirate nearest your ship, freezing him in place where he lasts for a moment before the movement of the vessels causes him to slide off the deck and into the drink below, a human ice cube.

Roscoe finds a peg-legged sailor away from the rest, and makes quick work, adding a red flourish to his vest to match the red bandanna on his head! With a sad thump, the pirate hits the deck lifeless.

Zeph's blades whistle through the air, alerting the sailor on the far side of the ship. She manages to duck out of the way of the first blade, though the followup attack clips her thigh, spinning her around quickly.

Zale, currently none of the enemies are trying to come aboard, it would see they are a bit pre-occupied with getting assaulted.

Oxandren's strike obliterates another of the pirates, the green fire leaping to a nearby sailor, singing his shell-decorated beard.

The three sailors near Srisa look worried, and only one steps up to attack, scimitar flashing in the sunlight as he hacks at the triton.

The woman that Zeph had clipped grits her teeth and runs across the deck, leaping with a vertical chop, hoping to slice into Mr. Ariti!

Two pirates see how nasty Roscoe was to their crewmate, and they both advance, swords stabbing out.

The remaining two pirates saw the magical assault from elsewhere and run belowdecks, yelling THEY'VE GOT SPELLSLINGERS!

Zale's leaping kick manages to send one pirate to their knees in a flash of pain, though the other deftly avoids the strikes. Roscoe, taking advantage of the moment, stabs the downed pirate, sending a wash of blood over his boots as the poor man expires. In the blink of an eye, his dagger then draws a bright line across the other pirate's neck, dropping him to the ground as well.

Miri's now-infamous frosty beam causes a light rime to form on a pirate's beard and blossoms of frostbitten skin can be seen to crystallize after the beam fades away as he disappears belowdecks

Srisa, still not totally accustomed to fighting on a ship's deck, misses the first pirate she attached. However, the sweeping motion of her second strike severs the man's legs at the knee and he perishes with a wail!

The female pirate tries to keep her footing, but Zeph's windblast shoves her hard enough against the railing that she pitches backwards and plunges into the sea below!

The remaining pirate on deck charges towards Zeph, blade whirling around. NOT ALYSSA YOU BASTARD!

Suddenly from the front of the enemy ship, you see the figurehead, a gloriously carved woman reaching forward, creak and pull herself off the bowsprit. With laborious motion, she makes her way onto the foredeck, standing a good nine feet tall!

Miri's eyes rise and continue to rise as she watches the figurehead stand and stretch. Caught between abject terror and professional curiosity, she wears a nervous smile. "I have to admit, I've never seen a boat do that before." Composing herself, she recommences her arcane mumblings. Her wand hand begins to tremble as her chanting intensifies. A sickly green light begins to emanate forth, then she retracts her wand and lunges forth. With an emerald flash, a spear of smoking, bubbling viridian liquid surges forth towards the enormous creature.

Srisa and Roscoe turn the pirates into about three hundred pounds of fresh chum in a flurry of steel and sea spray. Zeph's blades whirl out, taking out another sailor's knees, ending his life with a howl of pain, sending fresh torrents of blood across the deck of the ship.

Zale lumbers towards the figurehead, fists flying out, landing two solid blows against the living wood, however they don't seem to have quite the impact Zale is used to.

From across the way, the liquid green spear sails out and slams into the chest of the figurehead, causing the material around the wound to melt away, pulling a shrieking, shattering wood howl from the mouth of the painted woman. The eyes burst into red flame, as she takes a fighting stance. Her fists swing out twice, aiming for Zale's face.

Another blast of acid splashes against the figurehead, burning away a little more of the paint on her body.

Meanwhile, Roscoe manages to get just high enough in the rigging to leap off, stabbing downward with his weapon, causing a glancing blow to land on her shoulder, chipping off a small bit of wood. However, her movements from the burning acid throw his aim with his dagger slightly.

Srisa manages to catch with her first strike, causing a flare of light to surge up around the figurehead, raising a howling scream from her.

Zeph lashes out with the windblades, trying to stay out of her reach as the blades whip around, however, both strikes miss.

With a howl like a sea storm, lightning begins to crackle around her body. Her eyes flare brighter, and she swings out at Srisa!

Srisa makes a valiant effort to strike back at the large wooden lass, but can't seem to find any purchase, perhaps deterred slightly by the crackling lightning that seems to suffuse the figurehead's body. Miri sends a crackling ball of flame at the creature, and perhaps it sees the threat, because she pivots and lets it sail on by. Thankfully, Roscoe is firmly planted on the thing's shoulders, and he doesn't go sailing off during her dance of avoidance.

Suddenly, a shimmer of ice forms around the woman's legs, and those of you close up can see that the ice has managed to fill in some of the holes where wood used to be and has rejuvenated her somewhat!

Zale's swinging trap sails through the air, threatening to clobber her midsection. Reaching out one giant hand, she catches the boom and stares at Zale, eyes furious as her "brow" squeezes down, showing her displeasure.

Roscoe tries stabbing the woman, but can't quite find a mark as the flickering lightning distracts him just enough. The woman, now incensed, swings once for the tiny menace on her shoulder, and once more for Srisa!
[ +- ] Slam Effect
From behind the group, on the ladder that led belowdecks, shouting starts up and six more pirates burst out, led by two exceptionally brawny goliaths brandishing wickedly curved axes. The pair charges, one at Srisa and one at Zeph, screaming a whooping warcry. Two of the other pirates draw their blades and take up guard positions, not wanting to engage anyone yet.

One of the pirates from earlier that resurfaced sees the mayhem and immediately dashes over and dives off the edge, his screams cut off as the sharks get to him.

The third goes to make a leap over to your ship, but trips and falls between the vessels with a splash.

Roscoe's stab manages to nick some more of the giant woman's wooden frame before he leaps free. Srisa whirls about, scoring a deep pair of cuts along the crazed berzerker's kidneys, causing a howl of pain. Meanwhile, Zeph sends his burst of wind at the big guy that attacked him, hitting him as well as the other two pirates near the stairwell. The big man and one of the two pirates dig in and stay in the gale winds without issue. However, the other one is blown straight back down the stairwell with a scream.

Zale's barrel attack rolls towards the woman, breaking open against her legs as she tries to resist being knocked over. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite manage to stay up, crashing to the deck for a moment, causing Miri's ball of fire to go sailing over the woman's head and off into the clear blue skies.

The woman clambers back up to her feet, enraged at being upended. Seeing Zale near the barrels, she takes a short step in that direction and swings once towards the barrel tosser! As her fist lands, splinters of wood spray out in a ring. Anyone within 5 feet of Zale make a DC15 Dex save or take Shrapnel damage.

The pirate that resisted the wind carefully heads down the stairs backwards to help his fallen comrade.

The berzerker near Srisa and Zeph each lash back out again, wildly, at their respective targets.

Zeph's blades lash out at the buff goliath near him, the second landing a glancing blow.

Miri launches a nasty beam of light that slams into the wooden monstrosity, causing another layer of rime to build up, seemingly binding the creature together even further, healing it substantially!

Srisa lands another pair of violently brutal strikes on the goliath near to her, blood flowing freely now.

Zales fists slip and slide off the woman, only one managing to chip off a little of the ice on her torso.

Roscoe's blades find a solid home, sending the goliath nearest Srisa into an eternal slumber.

The remaining goliath howls and launches himself at Srisa, ignoring any potential attacks from other combatants. (Zeph, you can make an OA).

Meanwhile, the wooden woman crackles with lightning once more, and steps closer to Srisa, punching at the woman that just downed the goliath a single time!

Srisa sidestep the figurehead's clumsy blow and just barely deflects the berserker's axe. Working up a sweat now, she is determined to finish him. Her blade flashes white with divine energy and she screams as she cleaves through his axe and skull, sending bits of both across the deck.

OOC:
I believe there are no more pirates in sight. Srisa took out the last one. Whoever's left is below decks, and there's one in the water. So it's really just the figurehead we're fighting now.
May 31, 2019 7:33 pm
OOC:
Yeah, realistically the goliaths are now puddles, and the other pirates aren't in sight. However, the recently healed and angry wood woman is still standing. :) I will catch us up on this one tonight.
Jun 2, 2019 12:30 pm
OOC:
Ah, I read Srisa's attack wrong. Assumed she went after the wood lady. Will update post to attack wood lady if that is cool.
Jun 20, 2019 1:11 am
OOC:
SO clearly I suck at actually updating. My bad all! Back to dealing with the big ugly!
Srisa explodes in a tritonian fury, weapon tearing chunks of flesh off with a pair of brutal strikes. When she finishes, the other goliath lies in a pile of lifeless flesh, blood soaking the wood.

By this time, the slaughter on the decks mixed with the sea spray has turned the entire surface of the ship's deck incredibly slick, making the it difficult terrain!

Roscoe tears into the creature with his blades, sending pieces flying everywhere!

Zeph trips the woman, knocking her prone! Roscoe, thankfully, leaps free of the falling woman, using some netting to arrest his fall as she tumbles. As Zeph leaps atop her to land a solid hit, he feels wood crack under the blow.

Miri's orb sails out, completely missing the target as the woman falls to the ground.

The woman stands up, achingly, wood cracking loudly as she does. Seeing Zeph nearby, she swings twice towards him landing a pair of solid blows (Crit [29 damage] and 17 vs. AC [19 damage] - 48 total damage)! Zeph needs to make a pair of CON saves or have his hit point maximum reduced by 29 and/or 19.

As the twin converging blasts of wind slam into the towering woman, causing her to creak in place. She bolsters herself and tries to resist, but the slippery deck makes it nigh on impossible. Slowly she slides backwards, further and further until her knees hit the gunwale. A snarl of focus from the windmasters as the gusts strengthen and in a rush, the woman is heaved overboard. No longer aboard the ship, it would seem her animating magics are broken and the light fades from her eyes and her massive frame sinks below the churning sea.

Combat Over! The ship is yours.

Srisa dives into the water. A minute later she resurfaces, hauling the friggin' figurehead.

"A ship needs her lady! Throw me a rope, we'll haul her up and put her back in her place: leading the way."
Jun 20, 2019 11:39 pm
"You want to keep that thing?" Zeph asks as he hurls an end of rope overboard.
Jun 21, 2019 1:54 am
Roscoe watches Srisa doubtfully. "How do we know she won't come back to life and slam our arses?"
Jun 21, 2019 1:56 am
Ignoring the others' concern, Zale gets in the water with Srisa and helps her with the now inert figurehead.
OOC:
Wasn't there a pirate in the water? And down below decks? I guess they have surrendered?
Jun 21, 2019 2:03 am
OOC:
WAS being the operative term. I mean, I suppose they still are, but in pieces now.
Zale and Srisa, both being at home in aquatic environments, have no issue lashing the rope around the figurehead's frame. The sharks circling the water seem to ignore the pair of them.

It takes several minutes, and no small amount of grunting and falling in the grisly liquid covering the deck, to haul her up. With a thud, she lands on the deck, dominating the space once again.

The pair of pirates belowdecks do come upstairs at the sound of the thud and lay their blades down.

Mercy and parlay! they cry, kneeling on the deck with their hands on the backs of their heads.
Jun 21, 2019 2:07 am
"We should be so lucky if she came alive again! Imagine the price we could get for a giant wooden golem lady! I suspect she's disenchanted now, however." She looks the figurehead over another time and gives it a poke in the face. "Right?"
Jun 21, 2019 2:11 am
Roscoe dances around the surrendered pirates. "Save it for the magistrate, ya scallywags! It's the noose for ya, I wager! Hee hee!"

Zale crosses over back to the Selûne's Grace to report to the captain. "The ship's ours, Captain!"
Jul 1, 2019 7:53 pm
Helane approaches you all, greeting Srisa first as the triton approaches her. The fight was magnificent Captain. However, this threat of animated figureheads needs to be reported to my people. With the number of sunken ships that litter the areas around my reef, if any such as these exist, they need to be neutralized or controlled. Do not hesitate to call on me in the future. she says as she and the captain exchange handshakes. With a nod, the triton leaps off the edge, plummeting into the waters below, disappearing beneath the frothy surface.

Ok, the rest of you lot. Well executed. Seems you captured a pair of them as well. That is very well done. Take them to the bilges and secure them to the bulkhead! she snaps, summoning a pair of deckhands to take the pirates below. That lot will net us quality coin when we return them to the powers that be. For now, it would seem we have two ships. I am loathe to lose you all, as you are commensurate crew, but we do need a prize crew. Better that you lot take it. Continue the execution of our orders, under my command as admiral of our little fleet. We can work on maneuvers as a team! she says, suddenly getting very excited by the prospects.
Jul 2, 2019 6:00 am
Zale is saddened by Srisa's departure. He didn't even get to say goodbye.
Jul 5, 2019 2:23 pm
OOC:
So, do you lot take over the ship? If you do, do you intend on continuing along under the overarching command of Admiral Helane, or do you strike out on your own?
Jul 5, 2019 3:10 pm
OOC:
As a player I'm fine with whatever. Was going to add, "Just putting it out there that I'm not interested in being captain," and then I looked at Roscoe's Ideal:
Quote:
Ideal: Aspiration. Someday I’ll own my own ship and chart my own destiny.
XD
"Congratulations, Admiral! Ho ho! Now, who'll you be naming captain then?" Roscoe knows there's plenty who outrank him who might be better suited for the job, but he'd be a fool if he didn't try to grab this opportunity! "I'd like to throw my hat in the ring! I'll fight anybody for it!"
Jul 13, 2019 1:10 pm
A volunteer that is handy aboard? That works for me, Captain Silversail. Helane says, winking at Roscoe. We shouldn't tarry here too long. We will try to find a friendly port over the next day or so. Should be one a few islands down if we can keep clear of any other hostile crews.
Jul 13, 2019 6:42 pm
"You heard the Admiral!" Roscoe yells, "Step to it! Shake out those reefs! Make all sail!"
Jul 13, 2019 11:33 pm
"You heard the Captain. Get to it mates." He says without question. He is not afraid to lead, and has done so before, he has found that sticking to his navigation gives him more freedom he needs.
