I'm open to other ideas. :)

Srisa wished she was charging ahead on her giant sea horse, but that's not how things worked on the surface of the world. Standing around before a battle with nothing to do was like torture to Srisa's action-oriented nature, so she got to the business of aiding the surface people with their war machines. These rock-lobbers didn't promise even a hint of the glory of a mounted charge, but she couldn't argue with their effectiveness. And Ox was already there, one of her favorite drinking mates.
"Need some help there, Ox? Wouldn't want you to hurt yourself before the big battle!" she chides, but her smile reveals that it is meant to be affectionate rather than hurtful.
She lifts the rock with ease. She remembers a time when she was new to the surface world and just keeping her head up all day and her lungs breathing in and out was a struggle. The experience had toughened her like nothing else.

Oxandren bends down very gingerly and slowly grabs a rock not bothering to bend his knees. When he tries to straighten out his back he says "Help? No, no of course n..." then drops the rock and grabs at his lower back in an over exaggerated way roaring with laughter. He elbows Srisa in the ribs and says "Maybe I should leave this to you, hahaha!" he claps her on the back and continues loading the weapons.

At long last, after many tense minutes you see a blood red flag flutter out over the other ship's mast. No nation or group you know of flies a single field of red.
As you close, Helane gives the order and the mangonel creaks and launches her load at the enemy vessel. At the same time, you all notice a massive stone hurtling from the other vessel towards your own sails.
Distance between craft: 100 feet

Oxandren relishes in the sound of ammunition splintering wood. He licks his lips to check the wind quickly and drops his shoulder as he rams the machine to turn the mangonel to the left about 2 inches."YAHHHHHH!" he yells in a wordless exclamation as the adrenaline starts to pump through his body.

Laying a hand gently to her holster, Miri examines the shapes dancing along the deck of the opposing ship. Sighting the helmsman, she flicks her wand from its holster, letting out a crack as three streaks of silvery light shoot forth.

Finally done with all this waiting around, Cecilla is pleased when it's clear they are in for a fight. Pulling out her cracked sea shell she feels the magic encompass her finger tips, shooting out a crackling burst of flames at the helmsman. Nothing wrong with borrowing someone's idea afterall...

Oxandren grunts as he runs his large frame to the rail seeing Miri and Cecillia launching spells at the helmsman. "Great Idea!" he bellows in a gruff voice as he conjures a bolt of lightning to throw as well.
