As a player I'm fine with whatever. Was going to add, "Just putting it out there that I'm not interested in being captain," and then I looked at Roscoe's Ideal:

A volunteer that is handy aboard? That works for me, Captain Silversail. Helane says, winking at Roscoe. We shouldn't tarry here too long. We will try to find a friendly port over the next day or so. Should be one a few islands down if we can keep clear of any other hostile crews.

"You heard the Captain. Get to it mates." He says without question. He is not afraid to lead, and has done so before, he has found that sticking to his navigation gives him more freedom he needs.
