Arrival at Nurok

"We all have special abilities that the bulk of your force probably does not and we have a little surprise for the enemy that they couldn't even guess at. I am fully confident that guile and magic will win the day."

"Your finest man in the last expedition?" Hraefn listened carefully to the colonel's assessment of the previous expeditions. "You refer to the Duke's captain of the guard, Larings? We had the opportunity to examine his mutated body in the presence of the Duke himself, and come with a better understanding of the enemy than the previous excursions."

"Some further detail of this strange metal cave has been revealed to me as well, Hraefn, humble woodcarver, Ovate of the Grey Circle. The duke might very well send a battalion of soldiers thereafter, but our best solution currently lies in the specific set of skills we possess."

Appreciative of the firm confidence of the group, Colonel DeLarouge smiles and tips his cup. "To metal caves and mystery. May your gods see you safely through this." he says before drinking deeply.

Afterward, he directs Captain Agard to bring you to where you will be staying. An area of camp close to the gates provides you a place to pitch tents or bedrolls, and a few soldiers have already gathered wood for you to use to form a fire if you wish.

"Not as opulent as your lord and ladyships might be accustomed, but closer to the gates means a bit less chill. If you are in want of anything, our quartermaster is just there." Agard says pointing to where you were to drop your weapons. "He can provide most things you may need, coffee and bread included."

With a nod, the captain leaves you to yourselves and returns to his duties. The sun is making its final trek toward the west, with about an hour of sun left in the day.

With nothing else left to do, Hraefn retired early, in preparation for the difficult task ahead for them all.
OOC:
Hraefn is calling it an early night, and making 120 Goodberries. He'll empty out the contents of the Bag of Holding for Ilwyn's retainers to keep. Any suggestions for supplies to bring tomorrow? That'll go into the bag.

Bram can't think of anything he needs now. A cup of coffee in the morning would be good. He doubts that there are any spell components available anywhere nearby. He will retire after having a bight of bread and hard cheese and leaving word to be awakened two hours before dawn.

Setting up your camp, you all soon find yourselves deep within the blanket of sleep. It is a quiet night, with only the sounds of the night animals and shifting guards to break the heavy silence. Nearby, the large bonfire continues to crackle and flame as the occasional refuse or creature is tossed upon it, though by morning it has died down significantly with only a thin trail of grey smoke rising into the morning.

As you awake, the fort is already beginning to come to life, and your men-at-arms have gathered your wagon and horses in preparation. Elavain is speaking with soldiers at the quartermaster's tent, and within a few minutes several sacks of food stuff are added to your dwindling supplies.

"It'll be 'bout four or five days up into th' hills, ladies and gents, and it promises to be chilly at best. If you've warmer attire, I think it best to don it 'fore we leave. We'll be up in th' range soon enough. Thought 'bout headin' t' Thunderhead, but that'd put us a day further along, and so unless there's need, I think it'd be best t' just go to th' cave."
Mar 1, 2019 10:59 pm
Bram steps up to Elavain as the wagon is about completely loaded as asks, "Do you think they might have any furs available here. I forgot to pack any winter clothing. This may be a heavy robe but those mountain winds will sail right through them. I've got some gold if it's needed."

Bram
"They might, sir, aye. I'd have an ask with th' quartermaster there. Corporal Elkridge says captain was pretty adamant about helpin' us on our way, so if they do I imagine it would be yours for th' asking."

Investigation check, please, Bram
Mar 2, 2019 1:20 am
Hraefn was up early, as was his usual practice, and had already flown up and about the direction they were headed, just to get a sense of potential danger ahead as they travelled closer and closer to their destination.
OOC:
If we're fast forwarding a little through the next few days up to the cave, then Hraefn's general activities will be aerial scouting, and in between, short rests to recharge his wildshape.
Mar 2, 2019 2:26 am
Bram makes his way over to the quartermaster and asks about furs for the trip north.

The quartermaster smiles and gives an affirmative nod as he enters his tent, returning with a set of fur-lined pants and gloves, anda heavy wool shirt.

"Ain't great for thick winter, but this time of year they'll do you just fine sir." Sliding you a small metal flask, he adds "And here's for what needs warming on the inside."

Aye, good to go.

It has been a full ten days of travel since you all left Gorna in service of His Radiance, Duke Owen III, ruler of Geoff. Leaving the last real vestiges of civilization behind, you leave Fort Nurok and its new contingent of soldiers behind and begin to head north into the rocky range of mountains to the west.

The Barrier Peaks stretch from the southwestern edge of Bramblewood Forest that forms the southern border of Ket to the north, all the way south to the beginning of the craggy peaks of the Crystalmists. Its terminus of northern hills is so rugged and steep as to be regarded as basically part of the mountain chain. The Valley of the Mage is hidden within the central Barriers, and their southwestern end forms the western boundary of the Grand Duchy of Geoff. These mountains are infamous for their strange inhabitants. Of course, there are some dwarves dwelling in hidden places within the Barrier range, for they have many precious minerals and gems.

It is those strange monsters that has brought you this far, and as you begin the slow climb to higher altitudes you take time to reflect upon what you know. Strange, fell beasts have been seen in the area. Even the normal dwellers such as gnolls, orcs and giants avoid the areas where the creatures are seen, alluding to the thought that your true test is coming soon.

The weather remains steady, with occasional gusts of wind, light precipitation and bouts of thick fog hampering your travel, but after several days of hiking through the rugged highlands Elavain brings your train to a stop. You find yourselves in a low valley, the far end of which is dominated by a craggy cliff face. Even from here you can see what looks to be a glint of metal at the base of the hill.

"Just there, my lords 'n' ladies." the half-elf says, pointing to a flat area a few hundred yards from the base of the steep hill. "There's good earth to set camp. Water is close, as are supplies should you need to make more than one foray into th' caves."

You have arrived at your destination.

Once everyone gets their posts in, I will close this thread. I apologize for the tediousness of this leg of the journey, but as we got to Nurok I got the impression some might prefer to just move the thread to here, rather than play out any possible encounters at Nurok or en-route. So... here we are. :)

Unsure whether to greet their destination with relief or dread, Etna stays tight in the group, eyes ever scanning the sides of the valley for things to eat - or things that might eat her. The valley made her uncomfortable. She had heard wild tales of the beast of the peaks in many a roadside tavern or from nights at the lodge with Lod. Not to mention their quarry, mysterious creatures themselves. That and the combination of the low ground made for uneasy riding toward the campfor the ranger. She preferred somewhere high up from which to survey her surroundings. In lieu of such a benefit, she shuts her eyes as her mare carries her forward, questing out to the wild for any signs of danger.

Cædwyn too is silent and alert for most of their trip into the mountains, keenly aware that this would be an ideal place for an ambush should anyone be interested in stopping them. He nods to Elavain. "Thank you good Elavain, your guidance has been a great boon to us." He wonders if he should instruct him and the caravan to return to Fort Nurok for the time being, waiting here only puts them in danger and might actually attract unwanted attention. He resolves to discuss it with the rest of the party tonight.

The visible metal walls in front of them only served to affirm Hraefn's unease about the mutations that lie within. Clearly it was not of this oerth. The words of Colonel Delarouge were still in his head - they were Geoff's best option to put an end to this menace, where others before them had failed. Hraefn took to his giant eagle form again, and began a final sweep of the valley and the surrounding hill, to report to his companions.
