"Beer sure! Schnitzel? Das I know not, aber wir haben much beef flesh, sausage und fowl! Please, take what seats you wish!" Agrobar responds, turning on his heals and going to fetch your requested items.

"Thank you little one." Hraefn stifled a smile. Even after all these years of speaking with the denizens of nature, he was still surprised by some of their answers.

Rejoining his companions as they entered the inn, and responding quietly to Etna's earlier remark, but loud enough to Ilwyn and Bram, having noted their cautiousness as well, "You're right lady Etna, there seems to be some beast that plagues them."

Before he can step into the Inn Bram notices a bird flying around their heads and follows it with his eyes as it flits away. Seeing that it seems to be communicating with Hraefn, Bram waits to enter the building until the druid steps over to join him. "What was that all about?"

Ilwyn's tension disappears, replaced by sudden bafflement at the barrage of odd language. She stands frozen for a moment, as if processing it, before her brain finally manages to pick up on the common patterns and sounds, allowing her to slot in her preferred translation.

She tilts her head, a look of concern coming over her. "I'll, eh... I'll have what he's having." She gestures to Cædwyn. "I'm of a like mind to my companion here though... It sounds like you have troubles. Care to share your burdens?"
Dec 28, 2018 11:22 pm
"Aye! See there, men? The lady knows trouble wane she hear it! She can see right thru t' the quick of it and stands ready lend her blade if needs be!" the young man, still standing on the bar, calls out, gesturing toward Ilwyn.

"A beast, m'lady fair. A most foul beast towering taller 'n these very rooftops!" he continues. From your judgement of the inn, that would mean a beast towering some 20 feet tall, if he is indicating this building and not just the other, single-story structures in town.

"Five arms's its got, wit' three heads, all wit' the smallest fang larger'n my whole hand! Taken the cattle 'n livestock it were, but nows taken t' liking man-flesh! Well I say no more! We's got real heroes here now what can bring an end to it!"

With his last words, the man hops off of the bar and strides boldly across the room, arm outstretched, seeking a hand to shake.

"Gaston DePlume" he says, bowing his head slightly. "Fur trapper and hunter by trade, man as a gift of the gods to the fairer sort." he adds, his head shifted slightly to eye Ilwyn and Etna.

"Please. Allow your first drink to be on me." Taking a small handful of coins, he ceremoniously tosses them onto the platter of drinks that Agrobar returns with.

"I noticed that the wildlife seemed too quiet, and asked the bird about it," Hraefn explained to the Suloise mage, "it mentioned a water beast of some sort which has been the cause of this village's troubles. We ought to help." This was the kind of thing Hraefn spent his life doing, village to village, and this would be no exception.

Hraefn barely finished his explanation when the young man in the inn introduced himself and described exactly what the druid had found out. Ilwyn seemed to have everything under control, so Hraefn let the conversation play out.

Etna rolls her eyes just enough for their proprietor to see. She takes no food, not comforted by the man's hospitality. She instead stands near the door, leaning against its frame, racking her memory for anything that matches the man's description, even if she expects it to be more than a little fanciful. She had learned too many times that the beast she woukd end up hunting was never as the witness described. Fear had a way of creating extra limbs to and contorting the sizes of threats, she had found.
OOC:
Nature or arcana check to identify monster from description. If its a dragon or monstrosity, I roll with advantage for favoured enemy. If not just ignore the second roll. Also I never got an answer to my primeval awareness last post.

Ilwyn couldn't help but chuckle as DePlume finished his tirade, clapping his hand and shaking it, possibly a tad more forcefully that he was expecting. "Appreciated, sir. And thank you for your openness. People can be surprisingly cagey about these things." She looks to the other villagers behind him and shrugs. "I don't suppose any of you would have any reports to give? Care to verify Gaston's description?"

Cædwyn also frowns a bit at the man's outlandish tale, sounding a bit of the made-up variety to him as well. He'll say softly to Ilwyn, "I'm not against a good hunt for the sport of it, but do remember that we are on a mission given to us by the Duke himself. We can't go solving the problems of every village we pass and ignore the larger threat to the Duchy. If the threat is credible, and I somehow doubt that it is, send a runner back to request aid from Gorna."

Etna
You recall stories of some beasts becoming so large, though most things of that size are usually giants. In these lands, perhaps Hill Giants or some of their kin. Creatures with multiple arms, however, are mush more rare.

Ilwyn
Several of those gathered shout their support of Gaston. "Aye! Tis true! Towering, horrid creature what scoops up cattle like they was some small dog!"

Agrobar merely looks down, a sadness coming over him. He nods slowly, apparently confirming what Gaston has said.

Ill kill a beast if the coin is right. I brandish my bow. Now, whose paying?
Dec 30, 2018 8:06 pm
The murmuring fades a bit as townsfolk look around to one another, then back to Agrobar and Gaston.

"Look at mich nicht an, ich habe no coins zu geben." says Agrobar, turning back to the bar.

"Ahhh... ahem... well, yes." stammers Gaston. "Surely the glory you would get...well... I mean, the tales to be told!" he continues, falling off to an awkward silence as he looks around the party.

The ranger keeps a mental note of her ruminations on the nature of the beast, then steps up. Grim-faced and serious, she barks, "Coin and glory be damned!" She turns on her heel, still scowling, and points an accusatory finger at Caedwyn and Merri. "Walls and cobbles've turned your turnips soft! These people won't see next harvest without cattle. And it doesn't take a cob to know when someone's lost more than their livelihood," she scolds, emotion fraying her tone. "Out here, we all need eachother, and I've seen too many steads abandoned to leave one now." Collecting herself, she brings her eyes to the floor, "I'll hunt this beast with or without any of you."

She turns once again, trying futilely not to let the adrenaline show in her face or voice. This time, she adresses just Agrobar. "Any clue to a den? Any pastures been torn up?"

Well, Etna. Since I don’t think you can handle this beast yourself and you don’t seem too worried about coin, perhaps you’d be able to pay me to accompany you, eh? I say, lowering my bow.

"I was listening to what was being said inside while you were talking to the bird," Bram told Hraefn as they stood only feet from the open front door of the Inn. "Fellow was talking about a giant with three heads and five arms. Didn't say anything about it being a water beast. I would sooner believe a bird rather than a human. Birds have no need for subterfuge while humans have many reason to stretch the truth. Shall we go in and try to sort this out?"
Dec 31, 2018 5:17 am
Hraefn followed Bram's advice back in to catch the tail end of the conversation.
"A little bird tells me it is some kind of water beast. If we need more accurate information my forest friends can tell us more on the way there, and lady Etna herself will have the appropriate knowledge," Hraefn pointed out in deference to the ranger's expertise.
To Caedwyn, "I have found it is often the case that the capital lacks resources and timeliness to help sort out the smaller concerns of individual villages."
And finally to the rogue, "Ser Merri seems to have need of coin as much as I have the lack of need for it. Will it suffice for you to have my share of the first coin treasure we encounter? Whether from this beast or in future."
Then to all, the soft spoken man instructed in an uncharacteristically firm tone, "We need someone to guide us to the beast, for those of us who are going. From there the animals can tell us more."

Hraefn, good sir. I care not from where the coin flows, as long as the flow is into my pocket.
Dec 31, 2018 1:08 pm
Gaston perks up at your group seemingly changing direction, looking to help rather than press forward. "Aye, good sir, I'll lead ya t' where the brute were last seen. If ya're goin' west, well then so much the better. Mostly follow th' road nor'west 'fore we break straight t' th' river. Tracks like th' thing we's huntin' ain't hard t' follow." he says.

Cædwyn growls and finishes his beer in one pull, "Fine.. if you're dead set on this foolishness. If it's to the northwest of us then it lies on our route in any case."
