Character Creation

Jan 13, 2019 7:07 am
You all have characters already, but I'd like to see some character introductions, accompanied by an image, and a link to a GP character sheet.

Before we get to that though, let's decide what level we are playing at. I know some of you are 5th or 6th. Discuss here.
Jan 13, 2019 1:16 pm
Yikes, I got greedy...

I made Khiiral 8th Level.
Jan 13, 2019 2:07 pm
Well maybe we'll play at 8th level then. Let's see what the others say.
Jan 13, 2019 2:21 pm
If everyone else is lower, I can scale mine back.
Jan 13, 2019 3:28 pm
Let's see what everyone's got currently, then we'll go with whatever sounds fun. :-)
Jan 13, 2019 3:43 pm
Zale is currently 6th level.

Full disclosure: I have a 5th level version of him in Dramasailor's nautical game. It might be more fun if the two versions were more than a level apart.

Phillip is a lvl 5; barb 4/rang 1
Jan 13, 2019 10:43 pm
I also made my charaxter 8th level. He's a rogue.
Jan 14, 2019 3:13 am
8 works for me. Jack is 6 currently so up 2 is easy.
Jan 14, 2019 6:20 am
Okay, let's make it official: make your characters 8th level, then submit them. When done, post an intro on this thread. Include an image, and link to the sheet (or simply post as your PC). Backstories can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. I can't promise to incorporate any of it, but if it will help you roleplay, then do it.

Next order of business: In my head, the Kestrel is a cargo vessel (with maybe a little smuggling on the side) that also occasionally takes on passengers (see Phillip). Think Millennium Falcon. If you combine Han & Chewie into one person you'll get Valrakas. BUT I'm flexible on that. What would you like the ship and its crew to be? Merchants? Privateers? Bloodthirsty pirates? Let's not be Navy, but anything outside of that is fair game as long as we all end up on the same page. Hash it out here.
Jan 14, 2019 10:38 am
Can we roll stats?

I like the Millennium Falcon type deal best, though wouldn't be opposed to privateer or pirate vessel either.

Or how about explorers? We could be the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Yes, you may roll for stats. 4d6, drop the lowest, assign as you see fit. If your rolls suck, you may use point buy instead.

All WOTC published sources are acceptable. UA, ask me first (but I will say yes).

Explorers would be fun too, yeah.

Khiiral comes from a noble house training in Sword and bow. He excelled in marksmanship but grew tired of upholding his family legacy and also bowing to military officials. He began to dabble in the arcane arts to infuse his arrows with devastating magic. He eventually left the recluse Elven Forrests and took to a life on the sea where he met his current captain.

I also like the idea of being smugglers.

So, Ian is privateer of sorts, and originally was from Scotland. I almost want to say that he was from OUR version of Scotland in the 1600s or so, and fell through some sort of magic portal while drunk. He wound up where we are now, and proved himself a worthy sailor. I'm leaning towards the idea of being semi-but not quite legal transporters. Fortune seekers. Something Firefly like?

Note to Jabes.plays.RPG
I already rolled way back when we started, I can reroll if you would like.

After rolling: Haha that 7! So I ended up with 7, 12, 12, 13, 17, 10 before racial adjustments and possible ASI's.

After fiddling around: Nah, I'll stick with point buy. Thanks!

Guys, I would prefer if you put all your feats as well as racial & class/subclass abilities in the appropriate spaces on your character sheet. Should also indicate where you assigned ASI points.

Also, in the space where you put your character class please also include your subclass. Helps me look stuff up when needed.

Much appreciated!

Yes, that's fine. Adjust both your max and current by the amount gained through leveling up.

Ian MacCeallaig, Human, Scottish Pirate Privateer, charming, but focused. I like the idea of him having fallen through a portal from a different plane where Scotland exists if it does not in your setting. As an officer on the ship he is quick to follow orders and keep the ship running smoothly. He seeks adventure, fortune, and whatever else the journey might bring him.

Additionally, I like the idea of being somewhat mercenary (han solo style). Maybe not always out and out piracy, and not waylaying ships out of habit. But not turning down a chance to smuggle some stuff into a port for some extra coin would suit Jack pretty well.

Raised by wolves out in the wilds ever since he was separated from his tribe, Grog now attempts to make his way through the "normal" world. Having forgotten his true name in the wilds, he took on the name of Grog when he first found himself in the tavern, trying to order something, overheard someone order said drink, and just took to it. While his vocabulary and diction is extremely limited, mainly to sentences such as "Grog!", "Grog smash/fight!", or, one of his favorites, "X Grog!" where X is whatever number he actually knows and goes up from there from starting off at three. But, if he doesn't speak, he'll try to communicate via a series of grunts, yelps, or stomping. The barbarous Grog is always happy to fight!

@Cave, you chose the Dueling fighting style for Phillip. I believe that's meant for one-handed melee weapons, not the greatclub and greataxe that Phillip favors. You can still use two-handed weapons, but they would not gain the +2 damage bonus that the style grants.
Jan 29, 2019 4:36 am
yea thats why the +2 is on the Javelin, none of the other fighting styles fit Phillip xD

We're going to use your first set of rolls because no one else got a second set.

Go ahead and click edit, add another roll of 4d6 to replace that incorrect third roll.

If you're end up with results you're unhappy with, you can use point buy method instead.

I thought the only mistake there was some missing dice, but I see now you mistakenly rolled d4's instead of d6's.
Feb 5, 2019 7:24 am
What are you using for buy point value? I looked at previous posting and couldn't find it.

Ah. This selkie race is homebrew, I believe. It looks great, but we're sticking to published WotC books + Unearthed Arcana documents.

Might I suggest Sea Elf, and we can call it a selkie. Wouldn't even be game-breaking if we gave you a seal companion.
Feb 5, 2019 12:22 pm
Picked a female shifter(wildhunt) 8 level Druid (Circle of the land(coastal)) that is a former Road Bandit known as the Red Cloth Bandit. Not sure about her position on the ship, but I'm open to suggestions.
Feb 5, 2019 1:26 pm
Sounds great! We you have a your character sheet filled, go ahead and submit it.

I might (and I stress, might) eventually incorporate some of the mechanics found in Unearthed Arcana: Of Ships and Sea. If and when that happens, your rank on the ship might affect the game mechanics, but for now it's just for roleplay. So feel free. Currently, only Ian (The Librarian) has taken an unspecified officer's rank. The rank of captain is the only one unavailable.

Crew of the Kestrel
Valrakas, minotaur captain (NPC)
Ian, human first mate (swashbuckler rogue)
Severn, deck hand (NPC)
Jack, human deck hand (fighter)
Khiiral, high elf marine (arcane archer)
Zale, water genasi assistant cook (drunken master monk)
Phillip, human tourist
Grog, dwarven barbarian

Feb 7, 2019 1:44 pm
Gene, I have comments/questions about Doc Nela.

1. How did you get to a WIS score of 20? Highest possible score with point buy is 15. +2 for Wildhunt. +1 from Observant. That gets you to 18. I know you spent the other ability score increase to get Mobile, so where are the two extra points from?
2. When you can, please give her an avatar as described in New GP Member Guide.
3. I see you have the stats down for a hawk familiar and a giant seahorse steed. What's the pegasus?
4. As far as I can tell, Road Bandit is a homebrew background, which is fine - PHB describes how to create your own.
5. Where'd you get this Moon-touched Scimitar? It's not granted by race, background, or class as far as I can tell.
6. No one has magic items yet. You cannot have the following items yet:
2 Potion of Climbing, 10 Marbles in clay with Continual Flame on them, Cast-Off Armor, 20 Potion of Healing (I know you can brew them, but let's start today - meaning you have 1 potion)
7. Interestingly, Grog was raised by wolves so I think you'll have something in common.
8. Can I convince you to not be evil? Her feral nature and indifference towards human life are already a tough fit for this crew's surgeon, but it can still work if you're neutral. To be honest it doesn't matter to me so much what alignment you put on the sheet, but I have concerns about how you intend to play her.

Mind you, these guys are not saints. We're definitely going to do plenty of illegal stuff, and will sometimes run afoul of the law. But we're definitely not bloodthirsty pirates either.

Let's talk it out (all of the above). I want to work with you so you have a character that you will enjoy playing, and one that everybody here will enjoy playing alongside. :-)
Feb 7, 2019 4:58 pm
nahh let her :D she could be my next bounty XD
Feb 7, 2019 5:45 pm
1) This was my original stats rolled. 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 6 Used them as follows 10 STR, 15 DEX, 13 CON, 11 INT, 17 WIS, 6 CHA Then added Racial +1 DEX, +2 WIS. Then +1 WIS from Observant.
2) Forgot to get an avatar. Smile. Fix that fast.
3) Pegasus comes from Greater Find Steed. Same Giant Seahorse from Find Steed, and Hawk from Find Familiar. Summoned Images. Nice as you don't have feed or worry about them.
4) Road Bandit is a variant of Iron Route Bandit. Just alter in names mostly. Comes from Curse of Strahd originally. I liked it and seem to be nice for a background.
5) Made it a normal Scimitar. Not a problem there. The glow was neat.
6) Potion of climbing were listed as common buy items as well as Potions Healing. Changed the cast-off (specialty armor) back to normal, the marbles with continual flame are just marbles with personal continual flame casted on them. I reduce that to 1 as well as the potion of healing and removed the Potion of Climbing.
7) She likes animals so yeah that might be rather interesting.
8) Went evil due to back ground as a criminal type and all. Neutral is fine as well. Her respect for law is rather shot, but she isn't really chaotic either.
Feb 7, 2019 6:11 pm
1. Gotcha. I read your rolls wrong.
2. Cool avatar!
3. Okay, nice steeds. But you can only have one at a time so let me know which one is "active" right now.
4. Good background choice. Works well narratively with your animal-loving personality. And the criminality and ambiguous morals fit in nicely with the crew.
5. Don't worry, you'll all have plenty of cool toys soon.
6. You're right, healing potion is listed among mundane gear. New rule: potions are magic. You don't own a boatload of them (yet).
7. This crew has been together for at least a few weeks, and know each other fairly well by now. You've been on board for longer than most if you're an officer. Although if you want we could say the captain only hired you recently.
8. Yeah like I said I don't put too much stress n what alignment you put down. I just would like to avoid one character going off and murdering everything in sight (unless that was the sort of game agreed upon, but in this case it was not).

All good. I will tell insert the good doctor into the story soon.
Feb 7, 2019 6:27 pm
She can be an officer. She been around the ship. Since we are not on open ocean she going to go with Pegasus. (better choice anyway.) Her works with her herbalism kit kinda looks like alchemist at work. She has brew Healing potions and antitoxin for income vs Highway robbery. LOL. Tries to reform.

402 GP remains if my math is right and i didn't miss anything. He doesn't carry all of it, and typically on deck only has the pistol with ammo, rapier, and boarding axe.

I'd like him to have a pirate coat, but see no such thing in the gear list as well as a pair of sturdy boots.

What do you think, what else does a swashbuckling rogue need? (can I use the pistol? I mean it would make sense but dnd can be weird)

Hiya! Will be joining everyone. Wondering what classes and subclasses are currently being played? :)
May 31, 2019 11:12 am
Welcome, aboard, Vorn! Below is the current lineup. Don't feel like you need to fill in any gaps. Just play whatever you will enjoy.

Crew of the Kestrel
Captain Valrakas (NPC)
Severn, deck hand (NPC)
Jack, human deck hand (fighter)
Khiiral, high elf quartermaster (arcane archer)
Ian, human first mate (swashbuckler rogue)
Zale, water genasi assistant cook (drunken master monk)
Phillip, human tourist
Grog, dwarven berserker
Nela, wildhunt shifter surgeon (druid)
Jineer Solvis, changeling trickster cleric

You don't have to read the previous story chapters (I will fill you in when your character is ready), but please do go through the Session Zero & House Rules thread.
May 31, 2019 11:22 am
To answer the question you asked me on Discord: Yes, it's a little bit like Pirates of the Carribean, although you guys aren't actual pirates. Think of the Kestrel as the Millennium Falcon. Captain Valrakas is like Han and Chewie rolled into one. And then put the Guardians of the Galaxy on board as the crew haha!

It went straight into wisdom. My character is extremely intelligent and won't know when to shut up. Its going to be a blast! Whats your take on starting with magic items? I only have 575 gold to spend but was thinking about a something magical.
Aug 15, 2019 5:56 pm
Despite starting at Level 8, no one started with any magic items. The group has only recently gained a few after battling a group of merrows and weresharks, and no doubt there will be more to be found soon.

Show your work: talk about your level ups here rather than on the IC thread. HP increase, any new class features, new spell lists. As well, which magic items are you keeping?
Sep 30, 2019 6:59 pm
How about an area that we can post our current visual and possibly what is commonly known about us? That is just one entry character that you can keep updated. Nice to know what each of us look like and what outwardly gear we normal have on.

Some folks posted those here when they created their character. You can post your description here now if you wish.

I took the average hp increase. Unarmored Movement now lets me move along vertical surfaces and across liquids. Those magic items I got are incredible!

Zale is a water genasi drunken master monk. He looks like this:

Orbiting Bro Orb

This smooth, solid, 5-pound crystal sphere swirling with light and dark, was given to Alecor Thrush by his patron. It is sentient, shares Alecor's alignment, and has the personality of a bro. It has INT 18, WIS 8, CHA 14. It speaks, reads, and understands four languages, and can see and hear normally out to a range of 60 feet. Unlike most sentient items, the orb has no will of its own and can't initiate a conflict with Alecor.

Rather than being held in the hand like other arcane foci, this orb spins around Alecor and never leaves his side.

While the bro orb is in orbit, Alecor gains a +2 bonus to spell attack rolls and to the saving throw DCs of his warlock spells. He also gains a +2 bonus to his AC as the orb deflects incoming attacks.

The bro orb can cast Speak With Dead at will, and faithfully carries out such conversations for its master, Alecor.

If the orb is in orbit when Alecor takes necrotic or radiant damage, he (Alecor) can use his reaction to reduce the damage by 1d4 (to a minimum of 0).

In addition, Alecor can regain one warlock spell slot as an action while the orb is in orbit. Alecor can't use this property again until he finishes a long rest.

Bro!

OOC:
So this is the personality I gave your sentient item, not just for lolz, but as a roleplaying challenge. But I wouldn't want to ruin your fun, so we can discuss if you wish. I also intend to sometimes take control just as a DM hack storytelling device.

I couldn't come up with any of the dumb puns I normally use as central concepts for magic items I hand out in this game. Sorry, Jhiros!

Bubble bubble toil and trouble stab the witches and take their dubl-----oons.

Hey all!
Feb 28, 2020 4:33 pm
Jhiros is a faintly green-skinned triton that keeps his bluey-teal hair pulled into a tight bun on top of his head. There are a few things that mark him as someone more at home in the water, things like bits of webbing between fingers and toes, connecting his ears to his neck, etc.

He wears a set of scale mail, but each scale is worked intricately to mimic fish scales along with a helm that is a kind of bug-eyed fish head. He only ever really dons the helmet when he needs to fight in a known fight. Even stalking around deck, however, his shield and trident are never far from hand.

Attitude-wise, he's jovial and light-hearted outside of a fight. When it comes to a scrap, he is a terror. He tends to fuse might and magic into a fluid dance of death, using trident and ranged magic to strike those that run. He refuses to allow people to run away from a fight once they've engaged him, but he doesn't follow the rule for himself. That isn't to say that he won't listen to reason if the person wants to switch to resolving with words, but it is not an easy shift and may not happen, depending on the fight.

He drinks sometimes, gambles sometimes. However, neither of those interferes with his navigation duties. It's the one time lightheartedness fades away: when he's actively navigating.

Goal-wise, he isn't looking to depart the crew once they reach the kingdom, but he is excited/happy/looking with some trepidation on returning home. There are some bad feelings with family, given his choice to abandon the kingdom for surface life as his faith dictated, but he's confident he can make them see the good he's done.

@The_Evil_Dedd, roll for your stats here. To learn about your ship, The Kestrel, and the other PCs, click here.

Don't feel like you need to fill any gaps in the lineup. The roster is constantly changing as players' availability shifts with the tide *sigh*

Make your character 9th level. 4d6, drop lowest, assign as you wish. Acceptable materials: all WotC content, including UA. No homebrews. Wealth: 500gp + 1d10*25gp.

Think about a magic item (up to rare) that you want. I will probably give you something else, but will use your choice as inspiration.

Finally, are you crew, or are you a passenger? If the latter, let's
collaborate on your reason for being on this trip.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
