Chapter One: Outbreak

OOC:
@The group with the guards.
Eventually, you were all loaded into three separate boats and made your way through the canals. After close to about twenty minutes, you approached an imposing building that seemed to be separate from the rest of the city and approachable only by water. It was a stone structure that was badly weathered but sturdy and guards with longarms patrolled the top of the walls. As you approached, you were hailed by the guards on the wall but when the guards you were with identified themselves, the rifles were lowered and the steel gate that was lowered into the water and muck was raised slowly admitting your party. Entering the guards navigated to a stone rampway that led deeper into the structure. As the party disembarked, you saw that green moss and lichen had turned the stones closer to the waterline a shade of green, causing you to wonder at the building's age.

Elisabeth regarded you cooly for a moment before she brought her hand above the table. She had concealed it without you noticing but more importantly, you saw that she was holding a cocked pistol. She very purposefully uncocked it and laid it on the table and kept both her hands in full view on the table.

"And when exactly was this?" she asked and you almost thought you detected a sense of wonder in her voice.

Well you see that's the problem, all I know is that there is no records available of the peoples who built me. The lands are different to what they were like when I was last active, all this has led me to assume I have been inactive for a very long time.

Are Elendin and Wynn still together, or were they loaded onto separate boats?

Hallion will be carefully observing the building and its surroundings, but otherwise being a well-behaved prisoner.

Margaret is trying to recall what she knows about this building. The isolation and fortification make it seem like it was originally a military magazine; it seems like a strange place for a courthouse, more like a prison.

Balara utters a quick sentence in Gnomish. "This could be dangerous, she could turn us over."

Somebox this one is for you too.
Elizabeth rocked back on her chair and seemed to take in everything that was being said.

"So it's true then, I heard tales but I have never believed any of it...." she whispered.

When she was finished speaking she took another very large drink. From what you both understood of human biology, she had to be feeling the effects of the alcohol but there were no outward signs of any drunkenness that you could detect.

I will leave that up to you guys since I have no strong feelings about it.

As you came off the boat the guards seemed to be more relaxed, no doubt due to the fortified surroundings they found themselves in. The guards made their way to a heavy cast iron door with a padlock at the end of the dry dock and unlocked it with a heavy key. The door seemed old and rusted but still very solid and it took two of the guards working together to open it. The door swung in, creaking and groaning to reveal an arched hallway that was richly decorated. A heavy crimson rug ran the length of the hallway and torches burned, providing light. There were no windows, as the hallway appeared to lead deeper into the structure. As the guards began moving into the hall, there was a rattling of chains and the portcullis began to lower into the water once more.

OOC:
You remember looking over local history books in your youth and while you can't remember much, you do remember that this was once used to house criminals from all over Tasmara but as the country became more stable and regional powers were established by the Great Council, there was less of a need for it and the practice stopped. Since then, it has been used to house the most dangerous criminals of the city but it also houses a court where the most high profile cases are reviewed. You can only surmise that the captain of the guard has brought you to this particular court, so that precedence from the highest court in the city can be set regarding magic and the use there of.

Elendin could feel the blood slowly draining from her face as they left the boats and started into the structure. It was like being forced into a tomb. She had a wild thought that she would never see the sun again.

Glancing at Wynn, she whispered hoarsely, "I have a feeling I'm going to regret letting you talk me into coming along quietly. No... actually, I already do regret it." She shuddered, her breath starting to become ragged with the slowly building sense of doom.

To the Captain, Margaret says, "Surely the magistrate doesn't live here, and it's far too late for court to be in session. Are you planning to keep us in jail overnight? That doesn't seem appropriate for free citizens."

"If you hadn't gone quietly, you would definitely be locked up here. At least now, we have a chance to be let go." Wynn assures Elendin calmly. He then leans in in a way that he appears to be comforting her, and says quietly so only she can hear him. "Also, they haven't seen all of my tricks." He winks at her mischievously before straightening back up to examine the structure like the others.

El doesn't return Wynn's wink but does give a slight nod. He seems very calm and sure of himself; she's not entirely convinced that's justified, but under their current circumstances, following his lead still appears to be the best option - at least, for now.

She reaches out to touch the arm of the woman who keeps challenging the captain. "Excuse me," she says in a quiet, friendly tone, "but I was wondering if you could possibly stop antagonizing the armed man who commands all the other armed men? I'd really like to leave this place, alive and free, at some point in the near future."

Hallion smiles at El and Margaret. "Have faith, friends. In short order we shall know where we stand. It's the uncertainty that eats at you."

Somewhat less trusting than he tries to appear to his companions, Hallion considers the keep - and the men - before him. Reaching out with senses he is not entirely sure he understands, he weighs them all. Are they just? Or has a seed of corruption taken root here?
OOC:
Hallion uses his Divine Sense paladin ability. He now has 3/4 uses remaining which refresh after a long rest.

Balara feels Elizabeth would become less of a threat as inebriation overtakes her and starts taking mental notes on any changes in her behavior. "Don't tell a soul. What is it you want?" Switching back to common Balara decides to tackle the issue head-on, passively tightening her grip on her mug.

"But the law should be on our side! Tyrants only become tyrants when good people are afraid to stand up to them," Margaret starts, before taking proper account of how frightened Elendin is by the whole situation. "No, you're right. I'm sorry. Don't worry, we'll get through all this before you know it, and everything will turn out fine."

She takes Elendin's hand and gives it a gentle squeeze, makes some mental connections, and decides to go out on a limb. "You're Elendin Quayle, aren't you? I'm Margaret Ashdown. I was coming to meet you before the fire started, to talk about your magic. I guess that discussion is going to have a few more people in it than we planned," she tries for wry humour, hoping to relieve some of Elendin's stress, "but even under the circumstances, it's still very much my pleasure to meet you."
Mar 7, 2019 3:45 am
At first, Elendin just stares at Margaret, wincing at her blithe mention of "your magic," unable to make sense of the change of topic. Then it clicks. "Oh. Oh." She gives a short huff of a laugh. "Honestly, I'd completely forgotten that I'd come to that part of town to meet you. This night... it's seemed more like a month to me."

She twists her hand in Margaret's to give it a slight shake of introduction. As much as she'd been looking forward to having a conversation with this woman, she's still too worried to match her confident cheer. El reflects that she seems to be the one realist surrounded by cockeyed optimists. Well, and heavily armed guards. "I'd like to say it's good to meet you, but I'll reserve that until we know the outcome of this field trip." Realizing that this probably sounds a bit insulting, she adds a wry smile to temper it.

"One of my men left ahead of us and a special court has been convened given the gravity of the situation before us and the decision they must make." the captain said in response before making his way into the hallway.

Hallion closed his eyes and inhaled deeply and as he exhaled, his consciousness began to stretch in all directions but he felt nothing inherently good or evil in his presence, just the murky grey of humanity. For a brief moment, you thought you may have detected a pulse in the distance but it was too fast and too far for you to make anything out for certain.

As you made your way through the cots, you a faint shuffling sound reaches your ears and a whisper carries in the cavernous space before you.

"Come one, he went this way. You know what we need to do." the voice was low and husky and there was a strange accent that you could not place.
