Chapter One: Outbreak

It was a balmy night in Esterwyn, the crescent moon and twinkling stars bright and clearly visible. The cool sea air blew in from the ocean, cooling the night but not unpleasantly so. The brightness of the evening and the temperature meant that there was more foot traffic this evening than normal. The crowd, for the most part, was gathered around the taverns of the entertainment district, as well as its less reputable venues. The Merchant Quarter was alive with the night markets, with many stopping for food of all kinds before moving onto the night market. Bards of all stripes moved throughout the city, busking and trying to earn the attention of the crowd.

You found yourself moving through the crowds as well, whether by walking smaller roads or in a boat that was making its way through the canals of the city. Regardless of why you had ventured out that night, you found yourself in the Seafront District. The district was comprised of waterways and docks for the most part. It was an area that never slept, as captains came in and unloaded their cargo before moving on. The area was renown for its more colourful taverns, where dockworkers, sea hands and crews came to spend their money before the next ship or voyage took place. It was also not uncommon to find captains negotiating over the cost of their cargo, normally with city officials or representatives of the noble class. The landmasses that the docks and taverns existed on were almost like islands in the district, broken up by the canals, many of which were deep enough to have a full vessel make use of.

Despite it being a working district, there was still a beauty to the buildings and warehouses. They lined the streets or docks in an orderly fashion, many showing intricate carvings of the oceans, waves or marine life, particularly on the domed rooves that were tiled for the most part. Classic motifs like columns, pilasters, pediments and blind arches were common. Typically you knew that the more richly decorated a dock or warehouse was the more likely it was to be owned by a member of the Great Council. Everything was a reflection of themselves and they could allow nothing to call their wealth or honor into question. Even the cobblestone roads were decorated with vegetation and the occasional archway. You also passed the homes of the lower middle class of Esterwyn, many choosing to make their home here despite the constant noise and smell, so they could be close to the largest source of work in city. The city guard patrolled lightly, each carrying a musket and blade, adorned in the dark blue and red of the guard.

As you made your way through the night, the sea breeze carried on it the unmistakable aroma of smoke. Looking off into the distance you saw an orange glow. A moment later you heard faint screams on the wind. Without realizing it, you broke into a run heading towards the source of the commotion. It was not long before you were joined by the city guard. A fire like this was a great risk, not just to the people in the home but to the entire city, since if it wasn’t contained you knew the whole city could burn to ash. Eventually, you turned onto the street and looked to the end where several homes were engulfed in flame, smoke billowing into the night air.

The fire had engulfed three homes on all sides and what appeared to be a bakery in one of the basements. The fire was everywhere, the roof was on fire, the doors and windows were on fire, fire was even coming out of the house through various openings, as did the smoke. As you stood there stunned for a moment, you heard screams and shouts from help inside the burning building. The city guard seemed to be focused on stopping the spread of the fire, using buckets to put out embers before they could catch. Those men knew that for the greater good of the city, the fire had to be stopped, no matter the cost to life but even as you watched, more spot fires began to spring up despite their efforts.

A tall figure among the crowd; face concealed by a hood and wearing an ornate but outdated suit of armour leaps into action. The figure speaks with a voice rendered somewhat metallic by the helmet surely worn beneath the hood, There are people still in there and the smoke will choke them. the armoured figure charges into the nearest building, weary of the flames but apparently unfazed by the clawing smoke that strangled the occupants within.
Jan 25, 2019 2:55 am
Conner tries to get closer to the engulfed building but gives up and gets down on one knee and beseeches Timet to help him find a way to save the victims of the fire or put out the flames. After a moment of prayer he rises and surges forward calling for the people in the crowd to go and find more buckets.

At the sound of Connor's voice, the people that had gathered to watch were spurred into action. Lines formed from the river to the homes and buckets were passed back and forth. This seemed to help but the inferno continued to rage, carrying embers and smoke high into the night air.

Margaret has lived in Esterwyn all her life - this probably isn't the first house fire she's seen, and there's an obvious need to organise a better response, since the Guard can't handle this on their own. People tend to just mill about and stare unless there's someone telling them specifically what to do, and she's pretty good at that.

She'll immediately start organising any nearby citizens. Some will be told to knock on nearby doors and get everyone out of their houses, in case the fire spreads and to lend additional hands and buckets. A few will be sent as runners to raise the alarm in nearby districts, and send anyone they find to help. Everyone else will be managed into bucket chains to the nearest canal or the docks, to fetch as much water as possible and put it where the guards direct them.

It's tragic that there are people trapped in the burning buildings, but nothing can be done for them without risking further lives. Margaret will focus her attentions on keeping the buckets moving, to save as many more as she can.
Jan 25, 2019 4:10 am
Using the cover of night to mask her activities, she is quite surprised to find not only a pillar of fire consuming everything in its path, but some humans working in conjunction to fight against the flames. Tugging at her hood she decides to leave, not wanting any undue attention. That is, until the screams of the helpless victims reach her ears.

She searches the area, internally screaming at such a foolish course. But surely there is something which could hamper this burning menace.

At first, Elendin felt annoyance at the disruption the fire represented. After all, she had come to this area of the city to meet someone named Margaret Ashdown, whose correspondence had ignited some hope that Elendin's strange affliction might be in some way managed. Now that this disaster had transpired, it was unlikely the meeting would actually happen. A dark heat blossomed inside her, a signal she'd come to recognize in recent weeks as a precursor to one of her strange outbursts - her rage manifested as physical destruction. She tamped it down as best she could. No good would come of her triggering another fire, or an explosion, or...

No, no good. She'd discovered to her dismay that once stoked, her anger seemed to take on a life of its own. She was going to have one of her outbursts, that was almost certain. Her only choice was to try to channel it into something that wouldn't make things worse or draw attention to her condition.

Abruptly, she thought about her recent discovery that she could start and, more importantly, extinguish small fires - candles, the fireplace in her room. She moved closer to the houses engulfed in flames. Well, it was probably no more fruitless than tossing buckets of water at the fire.

Elendin began to form her anger into the shape of the modest flame-killing force she'd practiced in her room and aimed it at the nearest visible flames. She didn't yet know that this was a spell called Prestidigitation.

@Genisisect: With a natural 20, I am going to say that you are safe from flame damage for the rest of the scene.
As Ventrue broke into what appeared to be a living room, the shouting became clearer. Four voices, one male, one female and two children cried out from upstairs, while another male voice came from the basement. There were separate staircases, one leading up and one leading down. Neither appeared very structurally sound and you had no idea if they could actually bear your weight but it was now or never.
OOC:
@kadeton: Go ahead and make a perception check, please.
With you organising the crowd and word spreading more and more help seemed to arrive and now the fire was now contained to the three properties and didn't appear to be moving onto the other properties. A man with a soot-covered face and moppy black hair passed you another bucket and you passed it down the line.
OOC:
@Somebox: Nothing really catches your attention. They seem to be doing the best they can at the moment with what they have.

@Moonbeam:
You walk up to the flames, ignoring the smoke as it stings your eyes making them water and the heat from the inferno. Guesting with your hands you begin to chant and as you do your eyes drift shut. They snap open as your spell finishes and you feel a cold burning sensation leave your body. You sway slightly but looking up you realise that the flames burning in the doorway are no more. The flames have been reduced to embers, burning inside blackened wood. Wide-eyed guards and townsfolk run forward with buckets to douse what is left of flames. The way was now at least clear should any brave souls be willing to risk the danger to save those trapped in the building.

With the fire seemingly contained for now, Margaret is able to focus on the plight of those still trapped in the burning buildings, including Doctor Russo. But she wasn't the sort to go charging into a burning building, and even if she did, what help could she be?

Instead, she had an idea. "You, you, you, and you, with me," she ordered, pulling the four strongest-looking men out of the bucket lines. She pointed them towards the nearest open houses. "Get strong blankets, or carpets, and as many cushions as you can carry. Meet me at the fire. Quickly!"

Striding through the flurry of activity near the burning houses, she called out, "Doctor Russo! When I say so, you're going to jump down to us, and we will catch you. Do you understand? Is there anyone else up there with you?"
Jan 25, 2019 7:33 am
Elendin's eyes widened in shock. Although she'd sent the power - whatever it was - to put out flames deliberately, she hadn't expected it to really do much. She'd primarily done it because she could feel the power building inside her and preferred to exercise at least some control over where it went and what it did. That it was actually quite effective gave her pause.

At the back of her mind, a tiny voice suggested that maybe, just maybe, what was happening to her had the potential to be a good thing.

The wave of renewed anger created by that thought sent whatever part of her the tiny voice belonged to scurrying madly into the recesses of her mind for cover. This thing wasn't "good." It had ruined her life! It was a relief to know that she might be able to do something useful with it while she was afflicted, and even better that it might be possible to exercise reasonable control of it, but she had no intention of accepting it as a permanent condition.

She was going to get rid of this thing, and then she was going to resume the course of her life as she'd always dreamed of it.

But in the meantime... putting out a fire was interesting. Even rather fun. And she could hear people screaming inside the building. Maybe she could help a little more. She still had so much anger. Anger to burn, as it were.

Elendin stepped a little closer, looking for the next target for her flame-killing power. As the heat of the fire increased against her skin, she reacted instinctively, drawing from her power to put up a protective field around herself, surprising herself. She hadn't known until that moment that she possessed the ability to cast Mage Armor.

Wynn had done his best to keep a low profile in the city. While the city's customs were a bit of a hassle as he was not used to the language quite yet, he had been able to make it through without giving away his true nature (as far as he knows). Though his clothes named him a foreigner, he was nothing other than a very fair human to the few people he had spoken to.
When the fire started, he was torn with indecision. In his homeland, fires were dangerous, but the Wilds had a way of dealing with it itself. This was not his home, and people were in danger. Cursing in his native tongue through gritted teeth, Wynn cupped his hands into the water of the docks and brought it closer to the fire. Ignoring the yells and strange looks as he appeared to be trying to put out a house fire with less than a handful of water, he began to chant. His clear and melodious voice sang out in Elvish to the spirits of Water and Wind, asking for aid as a heavy cloud forms over the burning house that he had seen a few brave souls rush into.

Hallion wandered aimlessly through the night. His thoughts churned. It has been weeks since his arrival in this strange... place. "Esterwyn." The word felt clumsy in his mouth, still. Much as Hallion felt himself in the city. He was out of place in some ineffable way. Which was endlessly frustrating. "If this is the wrong place, then what the bloody hell is the right one?!" He was no closer to answers. He didn't even know the right questions to ask.

The Seafront district helped. There was something soothing in the lapping of the waves against the stone; the anonymous bustle of the crowd. He found himself drawn to the place over and over again.

Hallion soon found himself leaning against a balustrade. It was a glorious night, tonight. The stars burned brightly above him, and seemed to dance upon the surface of the sea before him. The balmy air carried the sweet notes of a nearby lute. He sighed contentedly. "If I must be lost, this is not so terrible a place to sojourn."

The lute's refrain soon faded away. As Hallion strained after the dying notes, he heard the screams. Panicked men and women were running towards him. A woman stumbled, nearly falling. Hallion reached out, steadying her.

"What's the matter, lass?"

"Fire! There's a fire up ahead!"

Snapping to attention, Hallion began pressing through the crowd towards the shouting. He needed to be there. People were in danger and he had to help.

Within moments he had passed through the worst of the throng. Ahead there was, surprisingly, music once again. A fair-headed man stood before a blazing home. He was singing! The sound of it stirred something primal within him. Something incredible was happening, and suddenly Hallion *knew* this moment was what had been drawing him to the Seafront these past nights.

The bucket brigades seemed to have the fire well in hand. Hallion stood in rapt awe as the singer worked his magic.

@Somebox: I am going to go ahead and need two dexterity saves from you, one to avoid the flames and one to see if the staircase will hold given your weight.
OOC:
@Genisisect: I will add the +2.
As you began to run up the stairs, they creaked and groaned before you started to hear the timber cracking. Looking up you saw two small figures on the landing of the top floor. They were lower to the ground but still coughing in the smoke. As the staircase began to give way, you lept for the landing but you came up short, crashing to the ground in the ruined remains of the staircase.
OOC:
@kadeton:
"Margret? Margret is that you?" came a hoarse voice from the second floor. A head appeared out of the window and while the good doctor may have put on a few years, it was certainly him. He had the same heavily lined face and broad nose, his head almost completely bald except for the sides but his most striking feature was still his blue eyes.

As he stared down from the top floor, the people began to ransack neighbouring houses, mattresses, pillows, blankets and even drapes began to be piled in the street. It wouldn't be long until there would be enough to break their fall but the question was whether the house would hold for that long. The doctor locked eyes with you and understood what your plan was.

"The children first." he called down.
OOC:
@Moonbeam: Do you have any cured leather handy? In the low magic portion of the game, I am going to be tracking the material components of spells quite closely.
OOC:
@Darkreaver:
As you completed your chant, the water in your hands began to glow a bright pale blue before rushing up into the night sky. Clouds began to form over the house seemingly out of nowhere and as they broke, water began to pour down onto the buildings, the fire hissing as the water began to extinguish the blaze. Just as quickly as the rain clouds formed, they dissipated. Turning to the crowd of people, you saw most of them had frozen and were now looking at you mouths agape.
OOC:
Go ahead and make me a perception check, please. Also, I am going to say that the majority of the fire is out at this point and the citizens with the buckets can probably take care of the rest.

Elendin was torn between anger and joy. She'd just seen a pale man in vaguely foreign-looking clothes appear to create a rainstorm out of thin air. Well, she hadn't exactly seen it; she'd been obliquely aware of someone singing weirdly in a foreign tongue, and when the cloud suddenly formed overhead and began pouring water directly onto the fire, she'd heard the gasps and frantic muttering about how a man had just conjured rain. She'd followed the fearful gazes and pointing fingers to find the pale fellow looking chagrined and apprehensive.

She was angry, because her first thought was that maybe this person was in some way responsible for the curse that afflicted her. That made no sense, of course, but it was just the way her emotions were running lately - all hot, all the time. Being angry brought both comfort and a sense of agency, so she had a tendency to lean into it.

But there was also that flicker of joy. She'd found someone who, like her, could command unnatural power. She wanted to know more about him, to hear how the curse had come upon him and, more importantly, if he knew what had caused it and how to cure it.

That was a conversation that they'd never get to have, however, if the stranger was attacked by what looked to be an angry mob forming. Elendin made a quick decision; this time, she'd let joy take the lead.

Pushing through the crowd with a bubbling laugh, Elendin pretended to be oblivious to the prevailing mood. She flung her arms around the neck of the stranger and gave him a peck on the cheek. "Oh, you were right! It was every bit as marvelous as you claimed it would be. Absolutely the best conjuring trick I have ever seen, or even heard of!"

Threading her arm through his and clasping his hand, she gave it two quick squeezes, hoping to convey that he should follow her lead. "Wasn't that the most wonderful trick you ever saw?" she said to the nearest person in the crowd, flashing her most infectious smile. "He's been telling me for weeks that he had something truly spectacular to show me, and I'm ashamed to say that I was positively patronizing. But not anymore. You've certainly proven yourself to me. To everyone here!" She swept an arm in a generous, inclusive gesture.

"And now you simply must tell me all about how it was done. I know, you're not supposed to tell people your secrets, but I'm not just anyone, so you can tell me. But we're late now, so we really need to be going. Shall we?" She tugged the stranger's arm and began to lead him away.

I'm going to assume this requires either a deception or persuasion check. They both have the same bonus, so I'll just roll once.

OOC:
@Moonbeam: I'd add a bonus modifier to the result just because of the wonderful idea and the post itself but that won't make a difference. You can have an inspiration though.

@DarkReaver: This scene is for you as well.
As you both began to move through the crowd, several of the city guards drew their blades and levelled them at you and you found yourself looking down no fewer than half a dozen muskets. A richly dressed man, with a well-groomed goatee and narrow features, pushed his way through the guard. He was dressed in brown leathers which were accented with gold, as were his black gloves and boots. An aquamarine waistcoat drew your attention as did his wide-brimmed hat, with one end turned up and pinned with what appeared to be a golden pin inlaid with a pearl. A red feather was a bold addition that completed his look. Of more interest to you than any of that was the flintlock pistol he had drawn and which while not pointed directly at you, seemed at the ready. Like the rest of the guard, he had a blade hanging from his side, though it seemed to be of a much finer make.

"No one is going anywhere." he said in a silken voice,"Or not at least until I am satisfied."

Looking into the face of this elaborately turned out individual, Elendin felt a flurry of panic - never in her life had anyone threatened her with weapons, and suddenly she was the centerpiece of a table set with muskets, swords, and rather foppish red feather.

It occurred to Elendin that her stranger had yet to say anything. Perhaps he was mute. No, he'd been singing earlier. What was he waiting for? Why was he making her do all the work?

Ruthlessly, she smothered any outward sign of her fear and instead, offered her most charming pout. "Oh, I do hope you're not going to be too hard on my friend for revealing his new trick on an unsuspecting public. I mean, I'll admit that it was a trifle arrogant - no, dear, don't protest, you know it was - but, well, you have to admit that it couldn't possibly have been better timed, from a public safety perspective. The fire, you know. It's out now, which is really a much better outcome than we had any reason to expect."

She smiled up at her hapless new friend, injecting it with as much unvarnished besottedness as she could muster, then turned the smile onto the authoritarian fashion icon before them. Please, she silently bade him. We're just two slightly foolish artsy folk. Please let us go.

@Moonbeam Sorry, it's currently 2am where I am, so my muteness is due to being asleep through most of the action.
Wynn had a couple of choices before him. He had not expected this reaction from the populace, but he had prepared for it. He could run now, but the city guard and whoever this man was knew his face, and any chance of getting an audience with the human's leaders would be close to nothing. Plus, if he ran now, he would leave this woman behind. He had no idea why she had stuck her neck out for him. It was a sweet gesture, but it might get both of them killed.
Feigning exhaustion from his "performance", he bowed his head respectfully to whom he assumed was a minor lord.
"Sorry, m'Lord." he replied in a voice that he hoped sounded to be raspy from the smoke he had stood so close to. "I did not mean to frighten anyone. I was just trying to help as best I could."
He feigned a cough to help the illusion that it was just a trick.

It's...beautiful. Strange symbols, creating a masterpiece of information. Did the humans create this? Balara seems totally enamored with these strange runes and finds herself slowly walking toward them, everything else shifting out of focus.

That is, until a waft of burnt bread mixed with the smoke hits her nostrils, bringing her back to her immediate circumstances. Rescue this round man first, run back down to study afterwards. It takes considerable mental discipline for her to prioritize the victum. With a course set Balara grasps the man by his shirt, tapping his face. "Awaken you sleeping fool, lest the flames consume you!" She says with urgency.

Conner notices several other bucket brigades had been organized and a single doorway had been cleared of fire but there was so much more burning. He focused his group on the buildings to the right of center and joined the line.
Jan 26, 2019 6:57 pm
Hallion stands gob-smacked by the display, a fierce joy beginning to burn within his heart. As surely as he knows anything, he suddenly knows that he was sent to shepherd Wynn and Elendin. Stepping forward slightly from the crowd, he bows deeply to them both.

As he rights himself, Hallion spreads his hands wide. "Peace, good sirs! But for the valiant efforts of these two heroes, many lives would have been lost. They were invaluable in organizing the bucket brigades and dousing the flames that nearly consumed this neighborhood."

After loosing track of themselves for a moment Venture cursed quite loudly in Gnomish for their exuberance. The stairs are no more and those above cannot be saved. Somewhat dejected he turns and starts back towards the door.
Jan 29, 2019 5:23 am
OOC:
@Moonbeam, DarkReaver and Jovian83:
"I am less concerned with what they did and more with how they did it. That was no simple street magician's illusion. You summoned clouds and a downpour to douse the fire! Do not take me for a simpleton!" he growled,"If you do not wish to explain yourselves to me, I will take you to the Magistrate and you can explain yourself to her and since you are so eager to defend them and interfere with my work, you can join them"
OOC:
@Somebox: Both would require a check and as for whether you have time, well that's just part of the fun ;)
The man seemed unresponsive to your voice or your slaps and you grew concerned as the colour in his face began to change hue. Above you, you could make out the creaking and groaning of the timbers and over the dying cracking of the fire, you could hear heated voices coming from the street.
OOC:
@kadeton:
The children look up at you with soot-covered faces as their eyes water and noses dribble but now that the staircase had given way, they seemed to recognise they had very little choice. The older brother's eyes seemed to harden and with an encouraging nod from the doctor, he grabbed his sister's hand and lept from the building. You watched, with your heart in your throat, as they fell and breathed a sigh of relief as they landed with a couple of bruises and perhaps a little winded. The mother followed in short order and then it was just you and the doctor remaining.
OOC:
@Aldrusian:
With your help and direction, what remained of the fire was doused and you looked up at the house, now just a gutted remnant of its former self. The people around you seemed weary after their effort, some swaying on the spot, others sitting in the street. A small group had gathered around a group of guards and other people in the middle of the street. Their voices carried easily to where you stood, over the lapping of the water in the canals.
OOC:
Genisisect:
As you exit back onto the street you see the conflict between the guards and the other samaritans and note that it appears to be getting quite heated. You were distracted from that as the two children landed in front of you and as you watched, the younger girls eyes began to fill with tears after having the wind knocked from her by the leap.

OOC:
Don't think I can risk it then, better to ask for help.
Finding no purchase, Balara takes one last glance at the tantalizing runes before deciding the life of an innocent is of more importance. Before doubt enters her mind she sprints up the stairs, formulating a plan. Ensuring her hood is secured she rushes out the front door, to the growing sounds of yelling individuals. "A man is trapped below! He will suffocate!" She waves her arms to grab anyone's attention, knowing she might be mistaken for a hysteric child.

Before she quite gets out of the building she spots a large figure dressed in armour, upon hearing her voice they respond. Balara? Aren't you a sight for sore eyes. Quick lets help this man then.
Jan 29, 2019 1:20 pm
Wynn cursed internally. This is not how he wanted his first meeting with the local authority to go, but if his plans were to work, honesty may be the best policy. He only wished there weren't so big a crowd.
Dropping the facade of exhaustion, he meets the eyes of the Lord. "You're right. That was no street magic. That was the work of great spirits who have long laid dormant in this world. I simply asked them for help, and guided their hands."
He keeps his voice low, so that only the Lord, the Guards, and his companions can hear him. "I fear if I had not intervened, these people would be facing much greater peril. I am new to these parts, so I am sorry if I have broken some rule that I was not made aware of."
Jan 29, 2019 5:27 pm
The speed with which the situation had spun wildly out of control left Elendin slightly dizzied. Not only had her new companion just undercut her conjuring trick gambit and revealed her to be lying about the whole thing - in front of a substantial crowd and a sinister dandy with an armed entourage - but an additional stranger had seen fit to step forward to praise them both lavishly for their "heroic" use of unnatural powers. It was as if the entire city had gone insane, and were hellbent on taking Elendin with them.

El thought back to the moment she'd snuffed out the fire around the doorway. How many people had seen that? How many of them had realized that it was her doing? She might have been able to feign ignorance that anything unnatural was amiss, even in the face of her companion's sudden confession ("I don't know what you mean! He told me he was a street conjurer. He does card tricks, makes coins appear from children's ears!"), but now that this other fool had branded her a hero, even people who hadn't actually seen her work the magic would probably "remember" her doing it.

And of course, if anyone in the crowd recognized her, they would likely have heard that she'd been expelled from Master Leonin's mentorship for causing some sort of destruction in his studio. Whether they'd heard rumors about the nature of that destruction or not, their imaginations would certainly be set alight by this public accusation of using "magical" powers. She could feel rage building inside her again. To give in to it would mean almost certain death, to her and these two idiots with whom she'd become entwined, but she could at least channel it into making the best of this situation.

Tears welled in Elendin's eyes. Her lower lip trembled, then she cast her gaze to the ground and let her shoulders droop. "It's true," she whispered hoarsely. "I don't know how I did it or where it came from. I didn't ask for this wretched power, don't even want it. But when I saw the fire and heard the screams of the innocents trapped inside it, I couldn't let them die if I was able to help save them." Then, realizing that she needed to explain her earlier flagrant lying, she added, "I assumed this man was similarly afflicted, so I tried to help him pass off his actions as street magic to appease the crowd. People sometimes do terrible things when they're afraid."

She turned her tearful countenance back to the man with the red feathered hat, all her energy pouring into the effort to seem sad, remorseful, and resigned to her fate.

Since I'm trying a different persuasive tack now, I'll go ahead and roll another check, just in case you want one. If not, you can ignore it.

Balara is taken by surprise at the sight before her, the night becoming more unexpected. "Creature of stone?...Venture! Whatever are you doing here? Doesn't matter, make haste!" Yanking his hand she pulls him down the stairs. "Afterwards there are fascinating symbols you simply must see, hopefully we have enough time for proper study and make a retreat." Her excitement is obvious, under less stressful circumstances she would consider this a fantastic day.

Hallion is taken aback by the menace of the guards, their foppish leader, and Elendin's seeming horror at her gifts. Suddenly unsure of himself, he wilts before the guards. "Sir, I mean no offence. I simply offer myself as witness to the good of these assembled here."

@somebox and Genisisect:
You make your way downstairs carefully, avoiding putting too much pressure on the stairs themselves. By the way they creaked and groaned you weren't sure how much longer they would be standing for, after being ravaged by the fire. Coming to what appeared to be the remains of the bakery, you once again found an unconscious man on the floor who did not appear to be breathing and around you were strange arcane symbols.

With your encouragement, the doctor lept from the window landing in the pile of cushioning before, reaching out and grabbing your arm to steady himself.

"Thank you for your help, my dear," he said,It has been far too long, how are your mother and father? How is there health?"

As he spoke you could see genuine concern for the wellbeing of your parents in his eyes. The doctor knew enough to know that they would be getting on in age and all the complications that could bring.
OOC:
DarkReaver, Moonbeam and Jovian83:
"As I meant no offence to you sir, forgive me it has been a trying night." he said to Hallion inclining his head slightly,"As for the two of you, I am taking you to the magistrate. "Very well. I will go to this Magistrate. I will not leave your custody until such time as I am released." He gives Elendin a small, hopeful smile and offers her his arm so that she may accompany him. "Everything will be alright, my friend."
Jan 31, 2019 3:14 pm
El marveled at the man's optimism. If she was sure of anything, it was that there was no telling what was about to happen. Still, his calm was helping her to keep her inner heat in check, so she took his arm and, with her free hand, wiped some of the tears from her face.

"I won't resist," she promised the foppish guard leader.

Returning her companion's smile, she murmured, "I'm Elendin."

He looked over the smouldering remains of the home and shook his head. "They will have enough to deal with in the coming days."

With the doctor and family taken care of, Margaret turned her attention back to the rest of the operation. The fire was seemingly dealt with, and everyone was safe... but a group of guards were leading two civilians away, while the crowd looked on.

"What's happened?" she asked a bystander.
"Dunno," the man whispered. "One of 'em sang a song and made it rain, or summat. T'other one told a story 'bout it bein' a magic trick. Cap'n's taking 'em to the magistrate to sort it all out."

At the word "magic", Margaret's heart skipped a beat. The fire had been suspiciously easy to deal with, considering. Was it possible that there was actual magic involved? Regardless, it didn't sound like these people had done anything to warrant their arrest, and that offended her sense of justice.

Buoyed by a mix of excitement and righteous anger, she ran to intercept the foppish guard leader. "Captain! What's the meaning of this? Who are your prisoners, and what is their crime?"

Taken aback by the woman's confrontation with the captain, Elendin murmured to Wynn, "Friend of yours?"
Feb 3, 2019 6:25 pm
Wynn murmurs back, surprised by all of the humans who have come to his defense. "Well, I didn't have any friends when the night began, but I seem to be making a lot of them in rapid succession."
Feb 3, 2019 6:47 pm
With a tiny cough, El replies, "Yes, well, I can't help noticing that most of those new friends are holding us at swordpoint, so your technique may want some revision."
Feb 3, 2019 7:02 pm
"True. Very true." Wynn nods his head, contemplating the circumstance. "I wouldn't consider them very good friends." He appends his statement quickly, and quietly so only El can hear, "But in truth, I don't know what you humans consider friendly." He smiles at her as if he had said nothing out of the ordinary.
Feb 3, 2019 7:17 pm
El gave a discreet snort at his joke. "Well, we humans certainly appreciate that you took time from your godly existence to come down and see how we fumble about in times of crisis. Some of us appreciate it more than others, of course. This captain, for instance, is probably upset that your rainstorm wilted his coiffure."
Feb 3, 2019 7:36 pm
Conner speaks up before the two can be led away by the guards. "Don't you think it would be a better idea to find out how this fire started than to be overly concerned about someone who helped to put it out? There could be a criminal running around out here that you are letting get clean away."

There was far too much here for you to record everything here before you in the brief time you had. "That is none of your concern, madam but if you must know they are being taken in for questioning in relation to the blaze. Currently, they have not been charged with anything, which will be up to the magistrate to decide. Now clear off, all of you.

There were a few murmurs from the crowd that was at your back but they continued to disperse despite your words. They seemed content to let the guard conduct the investigation in the way that they saw fit, for now anyway. A few more fires might just change their mind but for now, their apathy was stronger. The leader of the guards just stared at you saying nothing before nodding and the guards, moved forward and pushed you aside.

Margaret isn't the sort to let a miscarriage of justice go, or to be dissuaded by the fact that there are very few people willing to stand beside her. Clearly a direct confrontation isn't going to work, so she's just going to discreetly follow the guards to their destination.
Feb 8, 2019 5:15 pm
"Oh, and Elendin..." Wynn leans in, while there is a brief lapse in those watching them. "Thank you for trying to help me. I haven't been here long, but.. well, its comforting to know the lengths some will go to help a stranger." He smiles at her, before a flash of thought passes behind his eyes. "Noting that, please be honest with the Magistrate." He straightens back up, sending an innocent smile to the Captain.
Feb 8, 2019 7:35 pm
El allows a very slight quirk into her own smile. "I'm always honest, Wynn," she says quietly, adding, "when it makes sense to be."

She takes a surreptitious glance around. Yes, she had promised she wouldn't resist, and she probably wouldn't, but it never hurt to maintain a healthy situational awareness, in case an opportunity to escape arose and it seemed like a better option than staying put. Traveling relativly quickly through the streets the pair arrive at the Blue Dolphin. Venture goes up to the bar and asks for some water and a generous helping of something more fortified. Tucking themselves into a booth, Venture passed both drinks to there friend. How have you been Lara, been a bit since I last saw you.
Feb 9, 2019 2:05 am
Sipping from her water, Balara takes in the sights and smells of the Blue Dolphin, rarely getting a chance to observe buildings from the inside. "Hm?" It takes a moment for her to realize Venture is talking. "Oh, fantastic. I've made major strides in my research, and everything else can be found in tomes up here, well most subjects. The secrets of old have remained hidden from the humans, their working knowledge of such matters is...outlandish.

What about you, any progress towards your own goals?"
Feb 9, 2019 2:13 am
I find that the humans historical records do not go back far enough for me to even begin to conduct research. Instead I’ve been taking some time to familiarise myself with what the world has become and that’s been going fine enough. Tempo rolls out the parchment with runes in it. I suspect that these runes were involved in some kind of summoning ritual, see these signs here are to strengthen and these parts to reinforce. But I didn’t see anything for binding or controlling. Perhaps whatever cane throufh is what started that fire back there.

Someone must be responsible, so hope remains for us to discover who is behind it and what their purpose is." Her eyes are full of equal parts glee and resolve.

Who can be sure, most things use to be powerful to start fires if I recall. Hopefully there wasn’t malicious intent, and that this was a simple accident.

Aldrusian says:

You made your way to the center of the structure and looked around, even as embers continued to flicker in the blackened wood and grey ash around you. There was nothing obvious that you could find that would have caused the fire, for all you knew it could have simply been a candle causing a curtain to catch fire.
OOC:
@somebox and Genisisect
The Blue Dolphin was a three story octagonal structure, the legacy of originally having been a grain silo on the docks. The windows were known to be shuttered in all but the summer months to keep the chill from the harbor winds from encroaching on the inside of the structure. The slates and were all poorly weathered. Although blue paint on the wood dolphin behind the bar was beginning to chip and flake, the inn had an inexplicable aura of permanence and age, no doubt thanks to being one of the oldest structures in the city. The inn’s location ensured that it was a place that sailors could come when they had some much needed shore leave or when they had spare time. Dockhands were also common in the inn. No matter who came calling though, they were almost universally unpolished and drank heavily.

You both found yourself currently on the first floor, which was known as the common room but was split into two parts, the ground floor and the quarter deck. All around the ground floor were tables and chairs, rough but comfortable. Embedded in the southern wall was a massive hearth which was burning intensely, providing warmth to the patrons. The walls of the common room were decorated with trophy fish of all varieties, tattered nets, tridents, whaling spears and pieces of masts, supposedly taken from famous ships. Looking up you saw that the infamous second floor, known as the crow’s nest, where patrons that needed privacy went from intimate meetings of all varieties. The balcony overlooked the common room and you noticed a few figures regarding you as you entered.

Finally, there was the bar at the far end. I ragged looking bartender was kept busy pouring drinks and leaning against one end of the bar was the owner of the establishment, Elisabeth Talbot. She was a short woman at just under five feet tall, but her thigh high boots added to her height. Her ebony hair was pulled back from her face and cascaded down her back in curls and waves. As you entered, her brown eyes regarded you from the door to the bar and back to your seat. Gold bangles jangled on her wrists, and multiple golden earrings pierced her ears. She wore a simple white blouse that was tied at the front and leather pants. Not much was known about the woman’s past before she washed up in Esterwyn and bought the Blue Dolphin and no one seemed overly curious, no doubt thanks to the hard look she gave whenever she was questioned. The patrons knew she had a mean right hook and an imagination when it came to the drinks on her menu and that was enough for them.

You guess correctly and that was some roll :)
Looking over the sketches that Ventrue had made, you weren’t able to immediately make anything out. You continued to study it intently until the symbols almost seemed to dance in your vision. Then all at once, it seemed to come together. The home was being used as a focal point for something and whatever it was it wasn’t good. The site was part of a chain that if established would strengthen and maintain whatever was being summoned. The fire had been used to establish the site, with all of the negative energy being harnessed to fuel the ritual. From the notes that had been taken that was all, you knew for sure.
Feb 15, 2019 7:06 am
"Oh. Oh my, simply incredulous." Her examination completed she shares her findings in a low voice, just in case anyone happens to walk by.

"You're right, it was a summoning ritual, nasty one too. These runes are for binding ...something... to this land, from where I wonder? Fire made the building it's 'summoning site' so to speak. So we know two key things: The ritual was a success, and whatever came through likely has an affinity for fire. Assuming this is the case, where'd they go?

I speculate the summoner whisked it away, which might explain why this town isn't a smoldering cinder. At least, that's my theory, we need more data."

Margaret puts her hands on her hips and tosses her head defiantly in the face of the guns. She's secretly terrified, but angry enough to push through it.

"Captain, the day that the citizens of this city allow the police to conduct their business without scrutiny is the day that tyranny reigns. I am merely a concerned citizen, attempting to ensure that due process is followed in the arrest of these people, against whom you have still not laid any formal charges beyond your vague 'suspicion'. Sorry mate, must have missed the note.
You made your way through the city for a number of hours, travelling on the canals several times before you came to an area where the buildings were made roughly and almost seemed to be built over each other. There was little in the way of planning to these buildings, as it appeared the inhabitants simply expanded them as they required. There was a strong smell of urine and gods knows what else on the street, with trash piled in dark corners. The few people that were making their way through the streets universally seemed to wear heavy cloaks that concealed their features but you saw the flashes of weapons catching the moonlight under their garb.

You passed what seemed to be a raucous tavern and as you passed, there was a crash as a man was thrown through the window of the establishment. Laughter and yelling drifted out into the street but no one seemed concerned, least of all the man who had been thrown through the window, who appeared to be out cold. You looked up at the sign that swung in the light sea breeze, the chains creaking, The Guided Abyss. You continued on your way, until you came to the city walls, here there seemed to be a number of rough warehouse buildings pressed up against the walls. They seemed like they were slightly better constructed and less ramshackle. The windows were shuttered and the few that were not seemed to broken.

At her gesture, a server came forward and dropped tankards in front of each of you and next to them was a small glass containing an amber liquid. You saw that Elisabeth had a similar tankard and glass in front of her, she dropped the liquid into the tankard and drank deeply before looking you both over.

So what brings you to fine establishment this evening?" she asked with a small smile on her face,"You certainly don't look like my normal patrons."

Margaret lets out a deep sigh, knowing there's no way she can convincingly lie to an officer of the law. But she's come this far, so she might as well get everything out in the open.

"Captain, my interest in these people is much the same as yours. I am a researcher into supernatural phenomena, and the question of whether or not they were truly able to produce the reported effects is of professional interest. I do not wish to lose track of them before I've had a chance to speak with them."

She takes a breath, some of her anger returning. "I am also a lawyer, and I know for a fact that performing acts of 'magic' is not grounds for arrest under any jurisdiction. Their detainment is clearly unlawful. Not only that, but your subordinate officers have now drawn their weapons on a civilian, and threatened violence! Your badge does not allow you to act outside the law, captain, in fact it holds you to a higher standard. If you won't release your captives, and you won't permit me to follow unmolested, then I insist that you detain me as well, and I will happily see you in court."
OOC:
Margaret's a bit too principled to lie to the police, but she's certainly not above brow-beating them into doing the right thing. I'm going to take an Intimidation roll and see how it goes, though I doubt it will be convincing!

Surely we could make ourselves available to the authorities in this city for a debriefing without any need for a detention? There is much to discuss. And I think if we collaborate, we all have much to learn. For example, this "magic" our interlocutor speaks of. It's very, very real.

Eventually, you were all loaded into three separate boats and made your way through the canals. After close to about twenty minutes, you approached an imposing building that seemed to be separate from the rest of the city and approachable only by water. It was a stone structure that was badly weathered but sturdy and guards with longarms patrolled the top of the walls. As you approached, you were hailed by the guards on the wall but when the guards you were with identified themselves, the rifles were lowered and the steel gate that was lowered into the water and muck was raised slowly admitting your party. Entering the guards navigated to a stone rampway that led deeper into the structure. As the party disembarked, you saw that green moss and lichen had turned the stones closer to the waterline a shade of green, causing you to wonder at the building's age.

Elisabeth regarded you cooly for a moment before she brought her hand above the table. She had concealed it without you noticing but more importantly, you saw that she was holding a cocked pistol. She very purposefully uncocked it and laid it on the table and kept both her hands in full view on the table.

"And when exactly was this?" she asked and you almost thought you detected a sense of wonder in her voice.

As you came off the boat the guards seemed to be more relaxed, no doubt due to the fortified surroundings they found themselves in. The guards made their way to a heavy cast iron door with a padlock at the end of the dry dock and unlocked it with a heavy key. The door seemed old and rusted but still very solid and it took two of the guards working together to open it. The door swung in, creaking and groaning to reveal an arched hallway that was richly decorated. A heavy crimson rug ran the length of the hallway and torches burned, providing light. There were no windows, as the hallway appeared to lead deeper into the structure. As the guards began moving into the hall, there was a rattling of chains and the portcullis began to lower into the water once more.

You remember looking over local history books in your youth and while you can't remember much, you do remember that this was once used to house criminals from all over Tasmara but as the country became more stable and regional powers were established by the Great Council, there was less of a need for it and the practice stopped. Since then, it has been used to house the most dangerous criminals of the city but it also houses a court where the most high profile cases are reviewed. You can only surmise that the captain of the guard has brought you to this particular court, so that precedence from the highest court in the city can be set regarding magic and the use there of.

Elendin could feel the blood slowly draining from her face as they left the boats and started into the structure. It was like being forced into a tomb. She had a wild thought that she would never see the sun again.

Glancing at Wynn, she whispered hoarsely, "I have a feeling I'm going to regret letting you talk me into coming along quietly. No... actually, I already do regret it." She shuddered, her breath starting to become ragged with the slowly building sense of doom.

"If you hadn't gone quietly, you would definitely be locked up here. At least now, we have a chance to be let go." Wynn assures Elendin calmly. He then leans in in a way that he appears to be comforting her, and says quietly so only she can hear him. "Also, they haven't seen all of my tricks." He winks at her mischievously before straightening back up to examine the structure like the others.

El doesn't return Wynn's wink but does give a slight nod. He seems very calm and sure of himself; she's not entirely convinced that's justified, but under their current circumstances, following his lead still appears to be the best option - at least, for now.

She reaches out to touch the arm of the woman who keeps challenging the captain. "Excuse me," she says in a quiet, friendly tone, "but I was wondering if you could possibly stop antagonizing the armed man who commands all the other armed men? "But the law should be on our side! Tyrants only become tyrants when good people are afraid to stand up to them," Margaret starts, before taking proper account of how frightened Elendin is by the whole situation. "No, you're right. I'm sorry. Don't worry, we'll get through all this before you know it, and everything will turn out fine."

She takes Elendin's hand and gives it a gentle squeeze, makes some mental connections, and decides to go out on a limb. "You're Elendin Quayle, aren't you? I'm Margaret Ashdown. I was coming to meet you before the fire started, to talk about your magic. I guess that discussion is going to have a few more people in it than we planned," she tries for wry humour, hoping to relieve some of Elendin's stress, "but even under the circumstances, it's still very much my pleasure to meet you."
Mar 7, 2019 3:45 am
At first, Elendin just stares at Margaret, wincing at her blithe mention of "your magic," unable to make sense of the change of topic. Then it clicks. "Oh. Oh." She gives a short huff of a laugh. "Honestly, I'd completely forgotten that I'd come to that part of town to meet you. This night... it's seemed more like a month to me."

She twists her hand in Margaret's to give it a slight shake of introduction. As much as she'd been looking forward to having a conversation with this woman, she's still too worried to match her confident cheer. El reflects that she seems to be the one realist surrounded by cockeyed optimists. Well, and heavily armed guards. "I'd like to say it's good to meet you, but I'll reserve that until we know the outcome of this field trip." Realizing that this probably sounds a bit insulting, she adds a wry smile to temper it.

The guards led you through the spartan interior of the prison and you all soon became disorientated by the endless maze of doors and staircases. Eventually, a wooden door was pulled open to reveal a long hall area, with a raised platform and dias at one end of it. Behind the dias was three, almost regal cushioned chairs.

The cushions themselves were a deep scarlet, while they appeared to be trimmed with gold. Behind them roared a large fire, the was currently nothing more than dying embers. Along the sides of the room were wooden stadiums, where witnesses to the court could stand. Finally, in the centre of the room there was another speaking dias but from this particular dias hung heavy chains and manacles, rusted with age.

There was no one else in the room, except for a cloaked figure that stood in the witness gallery, closest to the judge's platform. She removed her hood to reveal fine features, strawberry blonde hair and clear piercing blue eyes, which regarded you all with an intensity that belied a simple hearing.

Elendin curls up in the hard chair, struggling to find a core of warmth in her suddenly freezing body. She can hear voices raised in alarm, but it seems to be coming from far away, as though she's fallen into a frozen pond and is separated from everyone else by a thick layer of ice. Distantly, she thinks she hears someone coughing and retching.

A weak and tremulous voice is pleading, "Wh-what'sss... h-happen-ning?" It's a moment before she realizes the voice is hers.

This is what it's like to die, the most melodramatic part of her brain insists. She really hopes it's wrong.

The head of the guard rushed over to Elendin, as did the woman in the hood. As Margret inspected her, you could tell that she was suffering from an unnaturally high fever, she would need blankets to be kept warm. As you did your best to comfort Elendin, the guards made their way from the room. Within moments, two women and a man in official robes, swept into the room. The man made his way over to the woman in the hood. While this continued, Wynn continued to cough almost uncontrollably.

"Nareem," he barked,"What is this? What is going on?"

"If you give me a moment Tarlos, I will see what I can find out."

Nareem made her way across to Elendin first and knelt beside her. She took out a number of green leaves and placed them in a small stone bowl, before lighting them on fire. As the smoke drifted up she began chanting and instructed Elendin to breathe in the smoke which she did. When she exhaled the smoke had taken on a green tinge. She repeated the process with Wynn, who also exhaled a green smoke. After exhaling the smoke, she handed Wynn a vial and instructed him to drink. After doing so, he felt the coughing ease but the shivering continued unabated. As she worked, you saw a necklace with a small pendant drop from her neck.

"Whatever this is Tarlos, it isn't natural." she said.

With that Tarlos and his two companions looked uneasily between each other before Tarlos turned back to Nareem.

"What do you suggest?" he asked her much more gently and you could hear the fear in his voice.

"We'll need time to look into it and see what can be uncovered. Whoever is behind this, they have to be known to the order." she responded.

When she said that, Tarlos ran a hand through his brown hair and across his stubble as he thought. His brown eyes took in the scene before him and he closed his eyes for a moment, breathing deeply, calming himself.

"So the rumours are true then, magic has returned to the world."

Still shaking uncontrollably, El fought to make her speech as distinct as possible. She might only get one shot at expressing her last wishes.

"G-go to M-master Leonin's studio. M-m-my dragon sculpture." She pants - so tired! - then continues. "S-send it to my family...in Glossmire. Want my b-brother Vemeril to have to look at it every d-day for the rest of his life."

Her mission accomplished, Elendin resumes suffering in silence.
Mar 11, 2019 6:36 am
Margaret follows Elendin's words intently, even pulling out a notebook to scrawl down the relevant names. Despite the gravity of the situation, she can't help but laugh when Elendin finishes speaking. "Your last wish is to make sure that you get back at your brother? I'll tell you what, how about you pull through instead, and you can hand it to him yourself. Tell me about him, he must be a real jerk. Channel that rage! Come on, stay with me. Keep talking."
Mar 11, 2019 6:47 am
Keep talking? El is pretty sure that her bones are going to break from all the shaking. Still, might as well try. No one has ever really been interested in her side of the story. It's hard, though, so hard. She can manage only sentence fragments.

"Family... s-s-stone artisans. Blocks, b-bricks. P-practical. No v-vision. Vemeril... g-g-good boy. D-does everything right. No 'm-magination. Not me... artist. B-black sh-sheep." She gives a tiny snort of laughter, but she's tired, so tired now. Maybe if she sleeps, she'll feel better.

As the chaos of the room ensues, you notice Nareem's golden pendant has the symbol of a key pressed into it. As Tarlos runs his hands through his hair, you see he has a golden ring on one of his fingers with the same symbol pressed into it. Nareem and Tarlos continued to debate back and forward, as the other two judges and the guards watched on. Eventually, the guards including the captain were dismissed.

"From the captain's description there is clearly those with arcane talent among this group. The captain did his duty by bringing them here but I suggest they be released into my care." Nareem said to the three judges, Tarlos in particular.

"But do they danger pose to the city?" Tarlos responded.

"No more than I do, after all, they helped with the fire. Besides that, that one has a touch of the divine about him." she stated gesturing towards Hallion.

The three judges seemed to take pause and that and each of them scrutinised the Aasimar in turn.

"We have been right all this time, there are more things in heaven and earth than we had dreamt of."

"Does that mean...?"

"Yes with the good will come the ill and who knows what will crawl out from the shadows. They will be needed and perhaps sooner than we think, especially if this is not a natural illness or it spreads."

With that statement, the judges moved to a corner and began conferring with one another, no doubt about the fate of the group.

"Excuse me!" Margaret calls to the conferring 'judges', "I'm glad your little secret society seems to know about magic and is inclined to help us, but can you please explain what the actual heck is going on?"
Mar 17, 2019 5:18 am
OOC:
Well, that changes things. But I'd argue Balara would still go along with it because of Venture, so I'd say we follow along.

Venture whips up a little makeshift sling and sets Lara into it and follows after Elisabeth.

As Hallion tried to heal Wynn, the door opened and three figures swept into the room. A woman in a cloaked entered, golden jewellery glinting from under the cover of the cloak. From behind her legs came a small almost childlike figure, with proportions that suggested it was not a child with an arm in a sling. Finally, came a hulking figure that took up much of the doorway. As she entered the woman was already speaking.

"Tarlos you are not going to believe the night I have had...." she was saying before pausing as she took in the room and the group assembled before her, "....then again maybe you will. Nareem what are you doing here?"

"The same thing as you I suspect Elizabeth." she responded before looking at Margret,"We are a society that is dedicated to the old ways and preserving the wisdom of the ancients where we can find it. As for what is happening at the moment, the simple truth is that we have no idea. There have been rumours from all across Gabresia of magic returning and myth and legend coming back to the fore. At first, we thought they were nothing but rumours but then our members began finding that our words suddenly held power."
Mar 18, 2019 10:22 am
OOC:
Just a clarification I meant sling in the sense of a cloth device for carrying a child.
With a sense for the dramatic, venture casts of their good, revealing their truly inhuman, mechanic face to those present. My friend here has been struck down by a sudden ailment unfamiliar to her kind. This barkeep seems to believe you are saved who may understand the source of such illness. Currently Lara has made herself my ward, but requests that you lay not a hand upon her in your investigation.
Mar 18, 2019 10:41 am
Margaret stares at Nareem, horrified. "But... why would you hide yourselves away all this time? You've 'preserved the wisdom of the ancients'... but for what? What good is knowledge if you don't put it to use?" The beginnings of tears form in her in eyes. "I searched my whole life for knowledge that I could use to help people, and it turns out you've been keeping it from me, from everyone? Shame on you!"
Mar 20, 2019 5:45 am
Balara doesn't mind Venture's way of keeping her safe, finding it rather noble in it's own regard. Still, the very thought of exposing herself certainly worries the Gnome as this situation is definitely spiraling out of her control. She says nothing during their journey, deciding Elisabeth has heard enough for now. Not that she hates her, Balara's opinions on humans simply isn't very positive, even if she respects their inventiveness.

Upon arrival in this strange building Balara looks around cautiously, fascinated by it's structural properties but feeling a tad shy due to the current argument that is currently taking place.

Hallion grimaces at his failure to heal Wynn, and continues frowning as he studies the people in the room.

"Madam he says gently to Margaret, trying not to be overheard by the others nearby "recriminations may not be precisely helpful at this moment. Our new friends lie very ill and these people may know how to help them.

"Nareem, Tarlos, Elizabeth. It seems we have much to discuss. To begin with, could you please tell us what manner of illness has befallen these poor souls?"

"Some knowledge is not meant for the untested child." Nareem said gently before heaving a sigh,"The simple truth is that we don't know when our order was founded. What we do know was that it was founded when magic was last in the world. There is much to explain regarding our founding and now is not the time for such a lengthy tale. In brief, there was a time when mages became overcome with arrogance at their power and entered heaven itself and sought to challenge the gods themselves.

What happened to those mages is unknown to us but what is known is that Tinel, the Archmage of Heaven, came to his most powerful followers on the earthly planes and these five archmages founded the Order of the Golden Key. This great council of mages, led by the five, set limitations and laws for the use of magic. Over time, as magic left the world, the Order's power waned and as we did, we turned to preserve and safekeeping relics of the past. With magic gone, we began to focus on more mundane power but now by with magic returning to the world we are ready to assume our most sacred duty once more."

As she spoke, Nareem seemed to become more animated, particularly when speaking of the return magic. When she had finished speaking, she crossed to Margaret and pulled her into a deep hug and whispered in her ear softly so that no one else in the room could hear.

"I know your pain, better than you can imagine. Now that you have come to us, we will have time to speak further. There is something I would discuss with you but now is not the time."

Seeing that Nareem was occupied, Elizabeth turned to Halion.

"We don't know any more than you do." she responded with a sour look on her face as though the fact irked her greatly,"Whatever this illness is, it isn't natural but is unaffected by healing that we have access to. It is something we must unravel though. If this illness intensifies or starts to spread...." she broke off looking uneasy at the thought.

Perhaps this isn’t a disease then, but a curse. Those require much more specific and powerful effects to relieve then diseases, and may have similar symptoms

Nareem's hug surprises Margaret, but it also rather disarms her anger, and makes her a little ashamed of her outburst. It's been a stressful day and she's wound very tight, but she's able to relax a little having gained some genuine information - and the hug helps too, though she's loath to admit it. "Thank you," she whispers back, "I have so many questions."
Mar 26, 2019 11:17 pm
Hallion grimaces. "A... curse. Dark tidings indeed. Please do let me know if there is any way I can help get to the bottom of this."
OOC:
Is there any chance Hallion might remember something from his time in the celestial planes that would bubble up at the moment?
Mar 27, 2019 8:50 am
OOC:
@Somebox, can you make an Arcane check, please?
OOC:
@Hallion, sure go ahead and make an Intelligence check for me, please.

"Cursed?" Balara does not like the sound of that.

Rolls

Arcana - (1d20+5)

(17) + 5 = 22

As you stood there and the conversation flowed around you, your mind was drawn back to the site of the fire and the strange symbols you found there. That was it! It had been a ritual to start whatever this was. If additional rituals were performed, this would go from bad to worse.
OOC:
@Hallion: You don't recall anything that would explain what this is.
Apr 1, 2019 2:58 am
Balara gasps at this revelation, finding it all too obvious upon reflection. Tapping Venture rapidly she relays this information, speaking quietly in the midst of these strangers. "Venture, Venture the runes. If anything caused this curse it was that strange ritual, I'm sure of it."
Apr 2, 2019 7:44 am
Having it pointed out to them it becomes so obvious, Venture pulls out the sketch of the runes. We found a circle of runes in the basement of the burnt down building. The fire you see had been used to create a source of suffering sufficient to complete a su,morning spell at first we though, but maybe it is in fact a ritual to bring about the curse. It is clear though from these runes that further rituals were needed to cement the effect and improve it’s powers. There will be more catastrophic sales soon, and more will fall ill of this curse, and those with it... well it won’t be good...
Apr 2, 2019 9:03 am
"Could you reproduce the runes you saw? I know that's a tall order from memory, but perhaps it would help us figure out what's happening."
Apr 2, 2019 10:13 am
Venture places a sheet of paper on a table. I am a surveyor, my memory need not reproduce the runes as this sketch captures the most substantial features.
Apr 2, 2019 10:23 am
OOC:
I'd like to examine the sketch to see if I know anything about the ritual involved, but I want to get Nareem to look at it as well. How would you like to handle the roll? I'm happy to assist and give Nareem advantage, assuming her Arcana is higher than +5.
Apr 3, 2019 8:45 am
OOC:
You can go ahead and make a roll my friend with advantage, to see what you can work out.
Apr 3, 2019 10:48 am
Margaret examines the sketch, discussing the symbolism and positioning of the various glyphs with Nareem.

Rolls

Arcana - (1d20+5, 1d20+5)

1d20+5 : (11) + 5 = 16

1d20+5 : (18) + 5 = 23
