Whitcomb, who had fallen back under Alalla's sudden assault, gasps as his form melts into a far stranger and more disturbing shape. Coarse fur appears on his skin as his snout elongates, and spike-like horns bristle up around his head and spine.

It is its eyes that are most striking, however. Their black depths speak of ages - millennia even - of knowledge and experience. And an utter lack of pity or compassion.

"Hhhnnnngh... Heh! Heh..." The jackal-headed fiend's voice is wracked with pain and anger, but the lips curl back to show fangs as it chuckles. "Scragged by a paladin... I'd threaten to share that bit of Chant with Belhifet, but he knows already. He knows everything. How will you beat one who knows so much more than you? You should have garnished my loyalty while you had the chance!"

It points a claw to Zenithral, who is departing with the cambions, and casts a spell that assaults the archer's mind, hoping to cause him to fail his own spell that currently keeps the twins' fear at bay. The insidious weight of arcane magic slides off of the determined half-elf, however.

Whitcomb snarls and ducks into the demiplane, out of sight of all the companions except for Alalla.

Seeing the beast lasso Alalla with its slathering tongue spurns Reòthadh into action. Having never encountered such a creature he does what he knows best, drawing upon the northern magic imbued within him. Launching a bolt of ice he strikes the monster, focusing all his power, the sorcerer tries to encapsulate the fiend completely in ice before it causes more harm.

Reòthadh casts Hold Monster on the Canoloth (DC 17 Wisdom Save) and quickens a Ray of Frost at it dealing 15 cold damage and Reòthadh gains 5 THP.

"Let’r go yeh ugly mongrel."

The ice begins to take hold, as the Canoloth attempts to shake it off. It’s movements slow, until it freezes completely as the magic binds it. The Canoloth is paralyzed.

Zenithral's eyes alight and spectral wings burst from his back. "You're not welcome in there either," Zenithral says, allowing Halla to take the children. He knocks an arrow and it bursts into green and white, spiraling light. He lets it fly and it streaks off to hunt its target.

(Whitcomb must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 12 magical piercing damage and 15 radiant damage, 6 damage and 15 radiant damage on a successful save.)

He then turns his attention and arrows to the dog-like creature.

Zenithral's arrow hums through the demiplame doorway and spins about in the air, seeking out Whitcomb's position. The arrow buries itself into the fiend's heart, and then Whitcomb dissolves into a sticky black tar on the floor (he dead).

The canoloth is still held fast by Reòthadh's wintry magic, and Alalla easily pulls herself free of its tongue.

Zenithral steps forward taking a whip off his belt, the one from the Collector at the Hand. Though not as deadly as his bow, Zenithral shows great skill with it. He swings it, wraps it around the creature's neck, then pulls hard, trying to choke it to unconsciousness. (34 nonlethal, magical damage)

The canoloth sags against its magical bonds, defeated and beaten senseless.
May 3, 2019 12:02 am
Alalla raises her eyebrows at Zenithral's whip. "Very nice." She grabs the canoloth by one foot and hauls it out of the dimension door. "If it's teleportation thing works while it's unconscious, maybe we can use it for our..." she trails off, glancing at the twins. "Our meeting." Al looks to Halla and Zenithral. "Are they alright?"

Zenithral returns the whip to his belt and nods. "Good thinking...though how will we...you know...bring it?"

He walks back over to Halla and the twins and kneels, giving them another embrace. "Thank you for looking after each other," Zenithral tells Mona and Lance. He shakes his head and looks into their eyes. "It's not fair, is it? You're born and left in a terrible place, and everyone seems to want to either keep you locked away or hunt you down just because of your lineage. And you remember all of it. Well when you find you are afraid, remember this:" Zenithral says. "Halla and I love you. You are very special, and that means people fear you. Even if you can't seem to find a way, trust that there will be one. Endure."

Mona takes an uneasy breath that shakes her slender form. Eyes fixed on Zenithral, she whispers, "Endure... The One Who Endures..."

Lance does not meet Zenithral's eyes, but stares unblinkingly at the bloodied canoloth, mouth moving slightly. Listening carefully, Zenithral can make out some words in Elvish.

"Ve laurea anna,

An nar cotumor qualini.

Try as they might, no one can get any more words out of the cambions. When Zenithral's enchantment wears off they still seem calm near him, but refuse to leave his side over the next few days.

The canoloth is kept under constant supervision, both to keep it from escaping and to ensure that the blood hunters do not meddle with it.

During his remaining time in Kuldahar before the group heads out, Zenithral spends time with Halla as well as Mona and Lance, trying to really get to know them finally.

He also spends time with Saki and Arannis. He gets his uncle's Bladesinger sword from Ras and gifts it to his grandfather. He shows off to Arannis his tremendously improved skill with the bow and other arcane tricks. Likely only to be outshone by his former teacher.

As time passes, Reòthadh anxiously awaits for the coming conflict with Zenithral’s mother. Feeling stifled by the buildings and odd traditions of the people of Kuldahar, the elderly dwarf seeks solace in the nearby woods as much as he can. The woods give him comfort as he traverses during the daylight, dreading his return back to town for the night and noise of the tavern. Having laid Father Tulfgyr to rest with his companions did not bring much peace to the sorcerer, the mortality of the Father only reminding Reòthadh of the time he has lost and the little time he most likely has left.

Alalla sees first to the blood hunters. They are made to apologize to the twins and to Halla, and are put to work repairing the damage they did to her home.

The next day is spent with the orcs, sorting out their supplies, getting to know the tribe, giving clarification on their travel route. She convinces Halla to part from Zenithral and the twins long enough for a short visit ("They need some time to get to know each other without your mooning.") Then the Cagebreakers are sent on their way to meet Morrugh and the orcs from Targos. She says to keep an eye out for her outside of Easthaven, just in case.

The rest of the time is spent in relative seclusion with Erevain, trying to better understand her new powers, both divine and infernal. She still makes regular appearances to check on the blood hunters, to be sure they have not returned to their bullying.

Zenithral’s time with Halla and the twins is bittersweet. The twins, who were both fairly reserved before Ilmadia came to Kuldahar, now seem even more withdrawn - especially Lance. Any interaction with the villagers results in an exchange of suspicious stares and fearful glances (even the blood hunters’ apology is forced and uncomfortable). Still, there are moments when they, Zenithral, and Halla are alone together that the twins seem truly happy. Mona asks questions about Ilmater - ‘Does he wear socks?’ ‘What color is his hair?’ Lance’s eyes shine most brightly when Zenithral plays a game of prestidigitation with him. It is one that Zenithral learned from his mother - and Lance apparently already knows the rules. Did Ilmadia teach him this game in the Hand?

Saki and Arannis both seem uncomfortable around the twins. To think, their own blood mixes with that of fiend in these small cambions! For her own part, Saki makes an effort to at least get to know the twins, but Arannis can hardly stand to be in the same house as them. He insists on spending the time practicing his archery - though he hardly needs the practice! Even though Zenithral has surpassed the older elf in skill, his grandfather’s natural fluidity and grace with every draw and release are traits to which Zenithral still aspires.

The surrounding mountains and woods grant Reòthadh the solitude he seeks. The wind, always frigid this high in the Spine of the World, reminds him of days and nights long past spent traversing the peaks and forests of this wintry realm. He finds his mind clearer than it has been in centuries as memories return to him. Indeed, it is better for a dwarf to grieve his lost people here in the mountains than in the company of a young human village.

As he soaks in the frozen wilderness, he finds a feeling intruding upon his search for peace - a dark feeling that he recognizes, for it once spurred him to seek out companions to hunt down and destroy Icasaracht. It is message, as clear as it was so many hundreds of years ago, from the mountains themselves that all is not right in the North. For the first time, Reòthadh understands the extent of the evil that threatens the land, for even the Spine of the World fears what might come to pass in the near future.

As winds howl a call to action, and the snow beneath his feet grants his old bones strength to rise up once again as a champion of the North, the ancient dwarf realizes that even though his people have been lost, these mountains have always been his home more than the warm halls of Dorn’s Deep.

Every visit to the Cagebreakers is met with cheers. The orcs seem to be doing their best to follow Alalla’s teachings, though she quickly finds that their enthusiasm requires refinement. For example, failure to correctly recite Torm’s tenets should probably not result in the entire tribe taking turns to slug the offender across the face.

They accept correction quickly, however, and none of them more so than Chaide. The older orc woman constantly peppers Alalla with theological questions that delve more deeply into religion than Alalla has ever felt the need to consider. Erevain happily steps in to debate with the woman, and indeed the elf’s broad knowledge of Faerûn’s cultures and religions provides interesting insight. Through it all Halla bites her lip, obviously fighting to not to add her own opinions on religion to the mix.

After a vetting process, Keggruk offers Alalla the names of three more orcs who the orog feels are ready to take the oaths. Each new initiation into the knightly order is an event that makes the surrounding mountains ring with howls of Cagebreakers pleased to see Gruumsh’s hold on the tribe weaken.

Once the orcs have departed, Alalla and Erevain are happy to find some time to spend with each other. Sometimes sparring, at other times engaged in quiet conversation, the two find themselves growing closer than ever as they put the horrific and troubling events of the past few weeks behind them.
May 6, 2019 3:31 am
As the party is finishing up their preparations for the coming journey, Erevain volunteers to travel ahead of the party and make sure that all is clear for their arrival. Arannis joins him, obviously unwilling to stay in one place for too long while there are things to be done. With the aid of druidic magic the two elves dissipate into cloudy forms and race the wind westward towards Easthaven.

Later that evening, it is only Arannis who returns...
