Out of Character

For what we don't say on Discord, heh

Quoting from the character creation discussion on Naatkinson's other Cypher game:
Jabes.plays.RPG says:
Naatkinson says:
Do you know where the Delve is from?
Based on this, the Delve is from Numenera Destiny. It's a little disappointing though (if you will believe the discussion here) that the Delve is only good at finding shit, and the Wright is only good at building crap with the shit the Delve found. Kinda makes each one useless without the other.
So if someone is playing one of these types, I'd be open to playing the other.

I am definitely leaning toward Delve!

Awesome! I'll make some kind of Wright then. Sounds like a great relic-hunting team already!

It does! I am trying not to be overly worried about mechanical effectiveness for this character. I find Numenera character building can be a rabbit hole of optimization with all the combinations, and I don't want to worry about that too much. I think my Rugged Delve who Learns from Adversity sounds fun to play.

That said, if anyone sees anything problematic with my character choices, please let me know :)

Learns From Adversity sounds like RP gold!

With a Delve/Wright combo as the core, let's have the rest add their concepts around that, fleshing out the team.

I also agree that the words "Learning From Adversity" in themselves swim with awesome.

Which books can we draw from for descriptors and foci? Discovery and Destiny, for sure, but are the older documents also fair game? Let's see, I have access to the CRB, as well as Character Options 1 & 2.

I would say any Monte Cook Games Numenera books are fair game. In addition, I have the first four of the Cyphercaster magazine, and a third party foci book The Translation Codex, but in respect of the other GMs, let's stick to MCG Numenera books.

Yeah it's plenty as it is! Pretty overwhelming, actually. Which is why it's better to start with a concept and look for the best fit, as opposed to window-shopping around for what's cool hehe!

So far we have a Wright and a Delve. I also believe that Len was going to make a Jack? I plan on making a Glaive, what about the rest of you?
Jan 27, 2019 4:33 pm
Len's making the Delve, so no one has called Jack yet.

It seems like Numenera has come a long way since I first played it at its inception. I had never heard of the Delve or Wright character classes. Have the rules changed much since the original release? I played a Nano in that first game. It was one of the early Beta test games.

They kickstarter'ered a revamp of the core rule book. It remains the same mechanics as the original, but they added three foci (classes) to the original Jack/nano/glaive and various other options.

I think there are other types beyond jack/nano/glaive/arkus/wright/delve. I saw a Seeker. I forget what the rest are.
Jan 27, 2019 4:59 pm
That could be: there are three in Discovery, three in Destiny, but possibly more in the supplements.

From Destiny:
You can choose from a total of six different
character types: the Glaive, Nano, and Jack
described in Numenera Discovery, and the
Arkus, Wright, and Delve presented in this
book.

Well, then, I think I'll stick with what I know and play a Nano. I'll probably just port over the data from the original character and submit it for review.

If I remember correctly and it's been a couple of years, the Jack is a rogue type and the Glaive is a fighter type. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have the basic character fleshed out here but I still have to add the esoteries as well as any cyphers and oddities that we're allowed. My original character had two esoteries and I would like to keep the same ones unless only one is allowed.

Yes, as to Jack and Glaive roles.

Nanos do start with two Esoteries
