Out of Character

Jan 27, 2019 3:41 am
For what we don't say on Discord, heh

Quoting from the character creation discussion on Naatkinson's other Cypher game:
Jabes.plays.RPG says:
Naatkinson says:
Do you know where the Delve is from?
Based on this, the Delve is from Numenera Destiny. It's a little disappointing though (if you will believe the discussion here) that the Delve is only good at finding shit, and the Wright is only good at building crap with the shit the Delve found. Kinda makes each one useless without the other.
So if someone is playing one of these types, I'd be open to playing the other.

I am definitely leaning toward Delve!

Awesome! I'll make some kind of Wright then. Sounds like a great relic-hunting team already!

It does! I am trying not to be overly worried about mechanical effectiveness for this character. I find Numenera character building can be a rabbit hole of optimization with all the combinations, and I don't want to worry about that too much. I think my Rugged Delve who Learns from Adversity sounds fun to play.

That said, if anyone sees anything problematic with my character choices, please let me know :)
Jan 27, 2019 8:01 am
Learns From Adversity sounds like RP gold!
Jan 27, 2019 2:06 pm
With a Delve/Wright combo as the core, let's have the rest add their concepts around that, fleshing out the team.

I also agree that the words "Learning From Adversity" in themselves swim with awesome.
Jan 27, 2019 4:12 pm
Which books can we draw from for descriptors and foci? Discovery and Destiny, for sure, but are the older documents also fair game? Let's see, I have access to the CRB, as well as Character Options 1 & 2.
Jan 27, 2019 4:22 pm
I would say any Monte Cook Games Numenera books are fair game. In addition, I have the first four of the Cyphercaster magazine, and a third party foci book The Translation Codex, but in respect of the other GMs, let's stick to MCG Numenera books.
Jan 27, 2019 4:23 pm
Yeah it's plenty as it is! Pretty overwhelming, actually. Which is why it's better to start with a concept and look for the best fit, as opposed to window-shopping around for what's cool hehe!
Jan 27, 2019 4:25 pm
So far we have a Wright and a Delve. I also believe that Len was going to make a Jack? I plan on making a Glaive, what about the rest of you?
Jan 27, 2019 4:33 pm
Len's making the Delve, so no one has called Jack yet.
Jan 27, 2019 4:42 pm
It seems like Numenera has come a long way since I first played it at its inception. I had never heard of the Delve or Wright character classes. Have the rules changed much since the original release? I played a Nano in that first game. It was one of the early Beta test games.

They kickstarter'ered a revamp of the core rule book. It remains the same mechanics as the original, but they added three foci (classes) to the original Jack/nano/glaive and various other options.
Jan 27, 2019 4:53 pm
I think there are other types beyond jack/nano/glaive/arkus/wright/delve. I saw a Seeker. I forget what the rest are.
Jan 27, 2019 4:59 pm
That could be: there are three in Discovery, three in Destiny, but possibly more in the supplements.

From Destiny:
You can choose from a total of six different
character types: the Glaive, Nano, and Jack
described in Numenera Discovery, and the
Arkus, Wright, and Delve presented in this
book.
Jan 27, 2019 6:15 pm
Well, then, I think I'll stick with what I know and play a Nano. I'll probably just port over the data from the original character and submit it for review.
Jan 27, 2019 7:05 pm
If I remember correctly and it's been a couple of years, the Jack is a rogue type and the Glaive is a fighter type. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have the basic character fleshed out here but I still have to add the esoteries as well as any cyphers and oddities that we're allowed. My original character had two esoteries and I would like to keep the same ones unless only one is allowed.
Jan 27, 2019 7:31 pm
Yes, as to Jack and Glaive roles.

Nanos do start with two Esoteries
Feb 1, 2019 3:57 am
Okay, quick raise of hands if we're ready to go. I've posted a proposed setting and there have been no objections.

But I'd rather jump in cyphers blazing than hammer down the perfect setup.

Mostly, my plan was to give the other two GMs time to add their stink into everything before I commit us all to a path they might not by into.

Tomorrow night, I'll start the first chapter, so any last minute tweaks, lob them in.
Feb 1, 2019 4:07 am
I'm ready!
Feb 1, 2019 6:05 am
"Bring it on then, ya?"

Qralloq says:
Desoto finds 6 shins plus some parts.
How many units of parts?
Feb 5, 2019 5:52 pm
1 unit of parts
Feb 13, 2019 4:07 pm
These slurges armor is insane... I love it! We have to expend resources on an otherwise worthless enemy
Feb 18, 2019 10:20 pm
Quote:
In activating the cypher, a feedback is triggered, destroying all of the cyphers that Desoto was carrying.
Awww man! I just hope I can salvage 'em for parts later.
Feb 18, 2019 10:39 pm
Interestingly, the rules are different in the Cypher System rulebook, where one cypher randomly disappears permanently if you pick up too many. In Numenera, there is a table for random effects.
Feb 19, 2019 4:42 am
I remember there being a table, with some dangers being worse than others. At least the cyphers didn't explode ti cause damage!
Feb 22, 2019 3:28 pm
Reminder to Mick, don't forget the asset I gave to you for your next action :)
Mar 20, 2019 2:05 pm
I feel like I'm playing Myst right now.
Apr 6, 2019 7:05 pm
Has anybody heard from Oxbox I awhile? I think the last time he posted in this game was just before I joked about the House of Endless Slurges. Hope he didn't take that literally.
Apr 6, 2019 7:23 pm
He's been inactive my game as well. But I see him posting on the 5TDM game.
Apr 12, 2019 10:32 pm
Something I don't understand. I had to roll two speed saves in that last encounter. The first one I rolled over the target number and took damage. They second time I rolled under the target number and also took damage. I can understand a GM intrusion on a 1 or a 20 but I would think that if you rolled the more favorable of the two that the intrusion would yield a more positive result.
Apr 12, 2019 11:07 pm
The target number was 15 and you rolled a 13 and a 1
Apr 14, 2019 3:37 am
Hey, that was fun, Qralloq! Thanks! :-)
Apr 14, 2019 1:22 pm
Thanks Jabes. Desoto is a hoot!

Len

Apr 14, 2019 9:35 pm
Yep, thanks Qralloq! I haven't had a chance to look your character over yet. Soon!

Hey folks, as you might have seen on Discord, Falconloft was interested in joining us. They would be new to the system and probably require some help. Are we interested in taking him on? Expanding the pool of cypher players seems like the thing to do, but don't hesitate to voice any objections.
Apr 23, 2019 9:13 am
I am not opposed. I think there's hardly any difference between me and someone with zero experience if we're talking about mechanics knowledge haha!
Apr 23, 2019 1:19 pm
I'm okay with it. I think this setup works well. He can join us for an adventure or two, and stay or leave as he will after that.
Apr 23, 2019 1:20 pm
I'm ok with this as well
Apr 24, 2019 9:18 pm
I'm playing with Falconloft in other games. He would be an asset here.

Len

Apr 25, 2019 9:21 pm
Hey Aldrusian, are you still joining us for chapter 2? We're waiting for you to roll initiative if you want to join us :)
Jun 14, 2019 1:43 am
Clarice is up, len
Jun 18, 2019 6:45 pm
I'm having to pull overtime a lot lately, so I'm still here, and mostly keeping up, but unless there's something that Eunbyeol can handle directly, she's going to be (uncharacteristically) quiet.

Len

Jun 18, 2019 8:41 pm
Appreciate the heads up.

Jun 26, 2019 4:25 pm
Hey folks. Sorry for disappearing. My Dad had a stroke. I flew to my hometown on short notice. He's still with us, but not out of the woods yet.

I'm going to have to pull out of this game. Thanks for being great players. If you are curious as to where this adventure was going, you can take a look at A Stolen Song by Aaron Potter: http://www.onepagedungeon.info/2015/image-gallery/detail/p-aaron-potter---a-stolen-song/ for the adventure. The twist ending was that the girl who's song was the "stolen song" was originally going to be from the marauder tribes
Jun 26, 2019 6:43 pm
Sorry to hear that Len, we'll miss you while you're away. Best luck to your father.
Jun 28, 2019 1:28 am
Aye, luck be with ye.

But now, how will we proceed?
Jun 28, 2019 2:25 am
Well, we can montage back to town. I can promote someone else to GM and we keep going?
Jul 1, 2019 3:22 pm
I cannot follow Len's story, but I am willing to pick up the mantle and run A story. I always have sci-fi ideas.
Jul 9, 2019 5:14 pm
Okay, just so everyone knows, I'm working on the next chapter, just need a bit of clarification on a couple points so I don't contradict what's already happened. I'll have something posted hopefully by the end of today.
Jul 10, 2019 5:04 pm
Just so I don't forget anyone, can everyone give me a post to indicate they're active?
Jul 10, 2019 5:13 pm
Posting here that Im active
Jul 10, 2019 5:14 pm
I'm active
Jul 10, 2019 6:20 pm
I sent mcinnis a PM to get him into the story, hoping to hear back very soon. And that reminds me, I think he's on Discord, so maybe I'll catch him there. />__>/
Jul 12, 2019 8:42 pm
I am watching, but I want this conversation to sort of coalesce into a consensus before I move things forward.
Sep 2, 2019 7:52 pm
So... We're moving kind of slowly, and I'm not sure 100% if that's my fault or not. It is my first time running anything Cypher-based, and I realize I'm probably not running it as well as I could. Is there anything that I could do that I'm not that would help people get re-engaged, or is it just that everyone is super-busy elsewhere?
Sep 2, 2019 8:00 pm
I'm not sure either, other than typical weekend slowness. Jabes had some work rush. I think Legion is evacuating out of Florida. Naat has been stretched but is working on that. As for me, I have no ideas on how to solve that next obstacle, so hoped the others might. I'll put that IC.
Sep 4, 2019 2:40 pm
I do forget about weather sometimes. We very rarely get anything superbad here.
Sep 9, 2019 9:40 am
I'm back from the latest work rush. Eager to get back into this, but understand that several of you might still be dealing with Hurricane Dorian. Stay safe, friends!
Sep 11, 2019 7:26 pm
Woot for Effort!

Jabes, I have to ask, did you look up a whitepaper for that post? Cuz you've given a fairly good approximate summary of general spherical harmonics.
Haha! I did not. I simply threw together a bunch of science-y gobbledygook -- I guess I got lucky.
Jan 21, 2020 7:50 am
Rolled a 1! Yeah, I'm definitely back! XD
Feb 3, 2020 6:01 pm
Desoto has such bad luck lately!
Feb 6, 2020 2:55 am
I was wondering why I could read Falconloft's note to Jabes, then when I read Jabes' note reply, I remembered. Oh yeah, I am a GM IN THIS GAME! Haha.
Feb 6, 2020 2:01 pm
XD Pretend you don't see them!
Feb 7, 2020 12:20 am
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!
Apr 22, 2020 2:43 pm
I feel like we've stalled out and that's probably my fault, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to kickstart things again.
Apr 22, 2020 2:49 pm
I feel that this non-euclidian maze is too hard to understand. Coming up with ways to navigate nonsense is hard so it's easier to just leave it to Jabes to deal with.

I am not even sure why were really there, but I do remember there was a reason. It's just been awhile. Then there was the weird could it be time travel, our village had been destroyed, thing.

It's probably just too much to juggle and keep fresh in your brain for a slow paced game.
Apr 22, 2020 2:52 pm
You might be right about that, which if it is correct IS my fault, because I thought I was coming up with something that would be more suited to a slower game. I can probably correct for that...
Apr 22, 2020 3:13 pm
You could try giving us a straightforward montage back into your plot. If it's too late to recover momentum, then we'll know then if we fail to engage.
Apr 23, 2020 2:51 am
I agree with Qralloq. I'm finding the whole thing a bit hard to follow because of the slower pace. I don't really think it's anyone's fault. If it were a game where everyone had time to post 2-3 times per day, it may be easier to follow since it would be less spaced out.
Apr 26, 2020 6:16 pm
Apologies to all, but circumstances have changed around here so that I will be able to be online a lot less than I used to. To my Falconloft, please feel free to bot Desoto. I hope my situation changes soon. Thanks!
Jul 2, 2020 9:14 am
I'm not sure what the goal is here, now that Falconloft's adventure is complete, but I think my time with Numenera is done. Unfortunately, as the original GM, transitioning ownership to another GM isn't very straightforward. I'll work with Keleth to make that happen. Let me now who should be the new owner GM.
Jul 2, 2020 3:09 pm
Depending on if we can repopulate or not I'll stay around. To be honest, as much as I like character creation in Cypher, the actual play is a bit... flat. However, I am willing to stay around to make sure there's a group.
Jul 2, 2020 3:16 pm
I really like the system. Numenera the setting fails to connect me. It's like, there is this huge history, and the players are random ticks on a dogs back. It oozes movement and disconnect.

Part of that is why we set up the town. To ground the players rather than keep them as shiftless nomads.
Jul 2, 2020 7:38 pm
That might be what it is for me too. I remember back when it launched I felt like the setting was a bunch 'hey that's weird!' without any real theme. The fantasy game that was going in it seemed better, but that fell through shortly after I joined. I might need to give it a shot with a different setting. Maybe one that involves transforming weapons...
Jul 4, 2020 12:22 am
I agree with the like of the system but disconnect from the setting. With the idea of discovery being the chief component of it all, and being given a setting where untold worlds are in the past, you could conceivably just make up whatever you want, but again, it does feel random.

I would take the reigns, but I'd also rather flesh out my idea. With the current sentiments, it would just be an add-on to the randomness and distraction from Tarshu. My idea involves a gigantic robot hand/arm breaking through some earth as a start of some event.
Jul 4, 2020 12:25 am
I might also tinker around with the idea of my space game again, as it did start off pretty well. I definitely enjoyed giving my players some agency with it.
Jul 4, 2020 7:02 pm
Probably best to post a new game and let this one go then.
Jul 6, 2020 4:18 pm
I enjoyed playing with all of you! Thanks for running this, all of you GMs :)
Jul 6, 2020 4:22 pm
Agree with Naat, I appreciate the effort and the chance to RP with all of you. I'll kick everybody and shut this down this evening.
