The way before you is long and treacherous, forcing you to make slow, careful progress. At one point, Domarc finds a small sheltered ridge with a carpet of soft green grass and tiny yellow iris-like flowers. Less than a mile from there, last winter's ice still clings to the sides of a long crevice.
At last, you emerge from another icy passage to see before you a mountain ridge forking off to the north and northwest, spreading out from the rest of the Dulehans and extending toward the dark forms of the Dire Peaks far in the distant north. On the nearest slope, about two thousand feet above the valley floor, a black stone structure juts out.
The fortress is about half a mile away as the crow flies, but to get there on foot from here you'll have to descend about a thousand feet and then find a way to ascend the other slope.

Are we close enough to see people (for whatever definition of "people" is appropriate) coming and going from the fortress? Is there a road? A gate? Helipad?

Mordred cannot see any trail up to the fortress, but who knows what secret passages might lead to its interior from within the mountain. There are no signs of activity or habitation that can be seen from here.

"Can we descend this slope without being seen, do you think?" Domarc asks. "Though stealth may not matter. Gorham's eyes from his scryes are looking at us; perhaps he can read our minds. It feels like he makes the rules of these engagements, and can cheat us blind."

Getting down unobserved would be quite a project, there is no cover from the fortress -- you don't need to see any more to know that.
Anyone who wants to begin the descent should give me an Athletics roll, unless you all want to take it very slow with ropes and any climbing tools you might have.

Maybe we need to search for those secret passages? If we try and climb down and then up I feel like they are just going to be spamming us with arrows and Magic Missiles the whole time. Any other ideas? Maybe between Mordred and Annganne we can whip up a few illusionary distractions to see what kind of heat they draw?

It's going to get dark soon. The party will either need to make camp at this inhospitable overlook or press onward in some fashion.

Uhhhh. Let's make camp and see if we notice anything of interest at night. Torches, fires, patrols, etc.

"Aye, it'll be chilly all right." says Felor, casting an eye around for any modicum of shelter available. His gaze lands on an interesting outcrop of rock. "Perhaps Fjorgyn can guide us..." he says mostly to himself, and pulls out his mattock. Approaching the outcrop, he swings the mattock, splitting off a shard of rock, and examines the exposed minerals.

Felor studies the shard in his hand. The outer surface has two protrusions, suggestive of the mountain they're standing on and the one opposite, where the fortress clings. He turns the shard over. A thin vein of white, quartzlike stone runs beneath one of the protrusions. Felor flips the shard again, holding it to his eye like an ersatz sextant. If the vein were to represent a passage, it would begin somewhere at the south base of the fortress-mountain.
