Chapter 1: Past Present and Future

Raising his scanner, Ian frowns at it before standing in front of the mushroom wall. "Guys? There's somethin' b'hind this wall. He gestures for the others to get clear, "Stand back. I'mma try'n clear it." Waiting until everyone is clear, Ian looks down at the scanner, clarifying for himself where the passage is. Raising a hand he closes his eyes and lets out a slow breath. Reaching out with the Force he attempts to clear away the mushrooms slowly, hoping to avoid a cloud of spores.

Slowly and carefully, Ian works to shift the fungus aside, hoping to shift it just enough to expose the entrance. Still, there is a tendril of fear and caution that continue to run through him.
OOC:
I would like to also use a Boost die for being careful, essentially aiming. Just because Ian is at a distance doesn't mean he's going to take chances. I will take that point of Conflict, please.

ooc: People have been using Dark Side points like candy. Are we not using the strain and destiny cost for doing that?
Mar 26, 2019 1:05 am
OOC:
We are using strain and destiny and conflict
Mar 26, 2019 2:10 am
OOC:
@Ian: you have gained some advantage. How would you like to use it?
Mar 26, 2019 3:36 am
OOC:
i would like to have them remove Strain from hiding the rifles and using a dark side pip.
Mar 26, 2019 4:06 am
OOC:
Great. Please feel free to add that and edit your post.

@Avi:
OOC:
Let's just say that you manage to clear away the mushrooms.
There is nothing beneath them but warm warm, hard stone. There is no sign of your crystal but when you close your eyes, you can almost feel it deep beneath the stone below you somewhere.

@Ian
As soon as Ian clears the mushrooms you hear a ghastly noise and feel a rush of wind whip past your face, and the air itself screams out as if in anguish. You can't help but feel a deep sense of foreboding as you look into the tunnel that descends deeper into the mountain.

Looking at the tunnel itself, you see clear signs that it was not naturally made. You see places in the wall where primitive tools have been used to hack away at the stone and the floor of the tunnel has been cut into a crude staircase with very uneven steps. The place looks old. Very old. You feel as though you have disturbed something by your very presence.

What do you do?

OOC:
I'm. A little unclear on something too. In a non-rushed, non-combat situation like this, can someone just refuse the dark side point and then . . . try again right after?

OOC:
So, I am not totally familiar with the FFG system, however, in every other system I have played it comes down to risk of failue. So what might happen if you fail your task? If nothing bad would happen then there is no reason why you couldn't simply try and try again until you suceeded. So no need to roll. In this case, you are in a cavern filled with poisonous and possibly toxic mushrooms...

I would also throw it out there that "seeking" the Force again and again in the fashion you describe - trying to get the "right" hold on it - is a narrative/rp sign of frustration and/or a desire for power OR fear of failure, just as surely as using a dark pip is, and IMO the GM is well within their narrative rights to either assign Conflict outright for that, or to have a player make a Discipline check or something to avoid the Conflict.

Iterative rolls are kind of gameable in this system (useable to stack Boosts upon Boosts before making the "final" roll, for example), and should be avoided, IMO.

Not allowing iterative rolls is explainable in the fiction by the fact that, unless something significant has changed about the situation, your single/first roll represents your best efforts given the circumstances.

Of course it's Arina's game and they should run it how they like, but just wanted to share my experiences.

@Emsquared: Thanks for your input. I agree with everything you have said. But I don't want to issue conflict without a player's consent. I will always try to warn everyone if their character's actions will generate conflict.

@Everyone: you have all seen Ian, Taryn and Avi act in the cave. You do not have to passively observe them. You may do whatever you wish and interact with the environment however you like. You definitely all heard the ominous sound as it rushed into the tunnel leading deeper into the cavern system.
Mar 27, 2019 2:19 am
ooc: can you descibe the sound in a bit more detail?
Mar 27, 2019 2:41 am
OOC:
I think I did in my response to Ian's post above. Do you need more detail than that?

Is like, everyone-everyone there? I guess I thought they went off and we're doing this, just the few of them...

@Emsquared: everyone is in the room with the mushrooms. Everyone.

Evelynn had returned to the cave entrance after her encounter with the cloud of toxic mushroom spores, hoping to let Avi be able to focus on her challenge as well as let the itching subside, however her head whips around at the sound the wind rushing through the cavern, what could almost be imagined as a wailing screech. Stepping towards the now exposed "secret passage", Evelynn uses her own unique sight to try and ascertain what's down the rough, uneven steps even as she centers herself and attempts to reach out with her newfound Sense as well.
OOC:
Arina, I'm going to try and make a Perception check to see if I can hear/see anything down the passage, and I'm adding in a Force die to represent using Sense as well trying to feel for living things. You can roll difficulty against me later and adjudicate the result. She does not use the dark side pip, so Sense fails.

Rolls

Perception check, adding Force Die to use Sense.

2 Success, 1 Advantage, 1 Black Force Point

Total: 2 Success, 1 Advantage

adding difficulty.

Edit. Yikes
You don't gain a sense of what there is below. In fact your ability to sense and see through the force is severely limited. You have never felt this way before. It is as if something is interfering with your force abilities. You're not sure what could do that, but it's surely nothing good. You have a very bad feeling about this. It causes you 2 points of strain.

However, you do notice something. Lining the walls of the tunnel you do see a series of crude carvings. Strange lizard-like bipedal aliens with a single eye and large, long tails tipped with a club like boned structure are doing battle with some quadrapeds. The lizard creatures seem sentient as they are wearing primitive clothing and use stone age weapons. One thing that immediately catches your eye is the fact that their weapons seem to have been depicted with crystal tips. Could they have used Kyber crystals as some kind of primitive stone aged spears? You're not sure.

There appears to be several more carvings, that line the walls as the passage continues down.

Do you descend?

Rolls

Difficulty

3 Failure, 3 Threat

Total: 3 Failure, 3 Threat

Evelynn recoils from the foreboding feeling she gets as she tries to get a sense of what's in the passage beyond. Turning towards the group she looks especially towards Avi and asks, "Well, Avi. This is your crystal. I have a bad feeling about this passage, but this is where the Force guided us. Do you wish for us to accompany you?"
Mar 27, 2019 2:35 pm
Zepharo pulls a thin-cloth scarf up to cover his mouth and nose, as the "breath" issues forth from the passage, and he growls some words, "The Force didn't tell you that you must do this alone, did it sister? I will go with you."
