Chapter 1: Past Present and Future

Feb 21, 2019 1:40 am
Every child dreams about becoming a Jedi, about becoming a paragon of justice and battling the evils of the galaxy. For you, that dream came true.

You parents or caregivers were so thrilled that you had been chosen. Your farewells were full of mixed emotions. Sadness at leaving your loved ones, fear of entering the unknown, excitement at the opportunity of fullfilling all of your childhood dreams.

But like all dreams, the reality was quite different. You did not expect to see your Jedi caregivers turn you over to a strange middle aged Nautolan hermit. Nor did you expect to spend the next twelve years living in seclusion on a strange world, devoid of the comforts of modern technology raised by a single man who seemed to express no emotion at all.

It was a tough life, and you all reacted to it differently. The one time you all enjoyed was learning the history of the Jedi Order. Every evening, Master Selak would regale you with stories of the famous Jedi of the past. Great philosopher kings, Warrior poets and fantastic healers were all an important part of your new heiritage.

Today, you all stand at atrention in the meditation chamber of your home. You see an interesting blend of electric systemss stripped from your shuttle, and various flaura and fauna moving about the cave. Some for aesthetic purposes and others for meditative ones. You master insisted that you be surrounded by living things at all times as a reminder that the force is a living force and generated by life itself.

Today, was an important day. You knew this but you're not sure how you knew it.

Master Selak adresses you all

Greetings Younglings,

Today, is the last time I will call you that. From today onwards, you will be Padawan learners.
He waited a moment to let that sink in.

You have spent the past twleve years learning what it means to be a Jedi. You now know the theory and it is time to put that theory into practice. Do you all remember the first time you felt the force calling to you?
OOC:
Welcome to the game everyone. Sorry it took so long to get us going.

For your first post, I want you to write a flashback detailing your first exposure to the force. It could have been an extremely fortunate event, you could have forseen the future, something could have moved according to your will, or a sentient or non-sentient animal could have behaved how you wanted but in a strange way, or of course, you could have done something physically impossible.

Ian's eyes narrow at Master Selak, giving him a considering frown as the Nautolan spoke to the nine of them. Remembering anything is not exactly Ian's favorite thing in the world but it happens regardless when he doesn't distract himself. He glances aside as one of a hundred memories rises up from the night before the Jedi found him. The last night he'd spent on the streets.

((()))

Dim firelight flickered softly across the brick wall, cast by a barrel nearby. Old furniture and trash fed the flames, the crackling and snapping mixing with a forlorn cry barely audible over the sound of traffic in the skies. The alleyway hovel is torn and ruined, the canvas tent turned over, the buckets and cooler that had held the few personal belongings of its inhabitant. Food, a smattering of tools and an ancient datapad are among the items knocked around. The trash-ridden camp looks like a small but powerful windstorm had swept through it, leaving the weeping child at its center.

After a pause of nearly a minute, the crying figure ceases with a quiet sigh. Wiping at its eyes, it stands, gender obscured by the long hair and young age. Gathering up the scattered supplies the young human puts things back into some semblance of order. Canned food and tools clink back into place in the cooler and buckets before there's a pause. The two strangers at the mouth of the alley peer down at the small child, their intent and identities unknown thanks to their cautious stance and darkness obscured faces.

Fear is obvious, however, as they shirk back. The little human stands to face them head-on, tiny fists balled and angry. Indigo eyes glint in the dim fire as shards of glass, nails and metal scraps slowly rise off the ground to start rotating around him. "Leave." He says in Huttese with a unintimidating soprano. The two at the head of the alley waste no time in fleeing, scrambling away in haste.

The dangerous bits of garbage fall to the alley floor and the small child heads back to his pile of rags to go back to sleep. A light, fitful rest suitable for a world where neither food nor water, despite their all-consuming importance, match safety as the most valuable of commodities.

((()))

Snapping out of the memory he puts a grin on his face, eager to not have to hear, 'Youngling, fetch this' or 'Youngling, practice that' anymore.

----------------------

OOC: So I thought a long time about it but I thought this might fit better for what you were looking for than the first time Ian would have used the Force. Let me know if you'd like something else.

The purple Twi'lek stood amidst her peers, finding herself at Zafe's side, as almost always. Her arms are weakly crossed, and she doesn't quite look at their Master, her uninterested eyes darting between the creepers in the cave. It's not as if she wasn't paying any attention: She always was. Rather, she had grown cold to Master Selak... Not looking at him was a small sign of rebellion. Yes, a sign that may not matter - Contrary to her best friend, the old Nautolan was cold as ice. Yet, had she done nothing at all, wouldn't that mean that she had accepted her Master's decision? Concerning Taryn?

She can't help but glance at her sweetheart. She was not allowed to share space alone with him anymore. Absurd! Unconsciously, Avi pouts, and that's when her Master's words hit her.

Her first experience Force? Of course, she remembers it! That's when she realized how useful the Force could actually be. At least, the potential it had. At the time, she even thought to be special.

Her mother was such an incredible woman. Young, too. Too young. She remembers how poor she was, back in Ryloth. Her father, he wasn't around. Mother said he wasn't one of them, whatever that may have meant. And that's too bad because a poor free woman in Ryloth might as well be a slave.

She worked for single numbers in credits per hour, and never quite made enough money, but at least they scrapped by. Then, one day, Avi got sick. Her mother was desperate, and she took a loan - A mistake that would save Avi's life. Had she only not cared, maybe her mother would still be around.

She remembers the day. It was night, and her mother hadn't paid the monthly loan for the third time. They were eating soup when it happened. A bunch of Twi'lek, all men, suddenly entered the house, grabbed her mother and took her away. Avi tried to stop them and was almost beaten to death. Then... She was eating soup again, with her mother.

Avi remembers being confused. Crying, telling her mom that they had to go away. Her mother didn't understand. Of course, she didn't - This isn't a fairy tale with a happy ending. The men eventually came. They took her mother. They almost beat little Avi to death.

Why didn't her mother listen to her? Why couldn't Avi do anything? Why those memories, from a past long gone, hurt her so much?

She just now realizes her first is curled, a few tears sliding down her frowned face. Tutting to herself in annoyance, she cleans her tears. "Yep. Could never forget it." Says Avi, her eyes finally focusing on Master Selak.
OOC:
I'm assuming all the relationships we talked about on the different threads are okay? Zafe is Avi's best friend, Taryn and Avi shared a brief romance that was terminated by their Master, etc etc?

The devaronian blinks.

He could still see his home planet on the back of his eyelids. Or at least he thought he could... It was very much like this one, he knew. But sometimes he wondered if he actually remembered anything from Devaron, or if its reality had simply been supplanted by the sights, sounds, and smells of here.

Anyway, Force sensitives were not uncommon among devaronians. Indeed, it was on a regular screening of the children of his village that he was discovered. That was the first time someone asked him if he'd ever felt such a mystical call... he thought they even used those very same words.

Just as it was then, the words didn't resonate with Zepharo much at all now. He'd never felt a presence, never had the metaphorical call to nor from the Force.

Instead he thought of his next hunt. He could feel himself moving across the ground with alacrity, passing along the game trails, reading their sign, moving in unison with his prey. His heart quickened, and he found himself going into the meditative breathing exercise.

And as his eyelids rise up, he looks on Master Selak and nods vacantly.

Zafe musters up enough willpower not to grin at the prospect. Padawan, it sounded very special, like she was maturing from the title alone. She tries to sneak peaks at the others, to gauge their reaction, but doesn't risk looking too obvious, it would be foolish to embarrass herself during this commemoration. "Yes." She says briefly.

First time... That takes Zafe back, when things were normal and carefree. It wasn't something she liked to brag about, Zafe had a suspicion some of her fellow padawans would resent her if she drew attention to her relatively normal life. She was only a child, playing with her friends. It was tag, or maybe a race? It didn't matter really, until the game changed to pretend fighting, with rather large sticks. She wasn't one to back away from some rough and tumble fun, her fearlessness was not misplaced, she was a natural: others might have upwards of 10 welts while she would only sport two.

She and her friends got an excellent idea, brilliant even: challenge the other kids in a "duel", winner gets credits. Needless to say the operation went well, too well some of the kids thought. Naturally responsible adults were involved thanks to the upset snitches. Fearing a scorning Zafe chose not to return home until much later, and when she did there was strange man talking with her parents. Somehow he knew she was there, telling her to come forward.

He challenged her to a duel, Zafe was a terrified, but she figured it was this or a stern grounding. Giving her a proper dueling sword they fought for what felt like hours, but couldn't have been longer then a few minutes. Zafe knew he was going easy on her, she was inexperienced and predictable, blocking her every strike with ease. Throughout the duel she could hear him speak under his breath: "Interesting." "Good." and so forth.

Of course she remembers what came next quite fondly: the excitement from her parents as the man believed she was gifted with the force, leaving her home world, and being stuck in the caves for the last 12 years.
OOC:
@Lux Yes on my end.

Standing proudly and attentive before their Master, Evelynn let the wash of life through the cave fill her senses while the group of nine students gathered. Beside her she could feel Piodas' strong presence, their trials having forged a bond between them. She was able to sense through her strong connection to the Force that he was almost as nervous as she. Something about this day felt different than previous days to Evelynn, a feeling of potential.

As Master Selak's words spilled out, Evelynn smiled because, being Miralukan, her first experience with the Force would have been the when she first was able to sense the world around her. However, she had a feeling that that wasn't what her Master was referring to. Instead, she let her mind drift her youth, before she'd been selected to join the Jedi Order.

The market place was busy, as it usually was during the the day when her mother generally went shopping. With Evelynn being so young, not yet in a formal school, she frequently went with her mother on the trips to the market. She loved them, if she was being honest with herself. The crush of people, the multitude of emotions and sensations awash over the play, the clamor of hawkers and merchants claiming that theirs was the best product available anywhere in the galaxy. It had always been a rush for the young girl, and today was no different.

Her mother was off, haggling over the price for something when a light tickle along the back of Evelynn's neck drew her attention. Leaning away from her mother's leg she turned and saw a bag drifting in the wind. Giggling she glanced up, saw that her mother's attention was occupied, and turned to give chase as another gust caught it and lifted it skyward. Laughing she ran through the crowded pathways, her senses trained on the bag as it flitted here and there as the wind willed it. She reveled in the chasing of it, feeling with every gust of wind the ever-living presence that was the Force.

Eventually she tracked the wayward bag down as it drifted to the ground not far from her towards the back of the open-air marketplace. Laughing with childish delight she ran forwards and pounced, claiming her prize once and for all. Proudly standing back she turned to head back to her mother, who probably was beginning to wonder at her absence, only to find her way blocked by a pair of boys, slightly older than her. Her senses told her that they were humans, dressed in rough, dirty clothes, and more importantly, that they were angry.

"Looks like we found ourselves a freak to play with, Bennie." One of the two boys said, shooting a mean spirited smile towards his friend. The other boy just laughed, but neither moved. That was when Evelynn felt what was unmistakably her first true interaction with the Force. A whispering tingle at the back of her neck, a sudden prickling of goosebumps on her arms, and then a knowledge of danger coming from behind. Diving as quickly to the side as her young reflexes would allow, she felt suddenly a third boy, one who had snuck up behind her, as his fist sailed through the spot her head had just been.

In a panic Evelynn remembered running to the side and escaping into the crowd. But she also remembered that, even in her terror at being attacked like that, there was still the feeling of belonging and warmth that had accompanied the overwhelming sense of warning. Ever since that moment, her life had been on a path that guided her to this point.

"Yes Master, I will forever remember the moment I first was guided by the Force." Evelynn responded quietly, as she heard others around her similarly affirm their memories of their first Force experience.

Chest filled with pride, crossed arms, standing as tall as he could... Piodas has been waiting for this since a long time. He really wanted to look at the mirror and say that he is looking to a full fledged Jedi, and he wanted others to perceive that and be encouraged, strengthened and protected when feeling that a Jedi was with them... it was what the way the Order was perceived prior to what happened 12 years ago.

Piodas quickly did a recap in his mind... it was curious for him to be honest because he didn't remember a moment when he actually felt the Force when he was younger with his family... he always heard his dad brag about how the young Piodas "pushed" a group of bullies when they got him angry, but he didn't recall that. When the Jedi caregiver came due to his potential to become a Jedi, his parents where actually overjoyed that his son could become a Jedi, and his father actually felt that he knew such feat was worthy of legend... or so he said across the small settlement they lived.

Time passed, his caregivers gave him to Master Selak, and he took all the younglings to their current place of residence. He did his best to learn as much as he could and at first; he tried to become the Jedi his father bragged about... but as time passed by, he learned that he had to be the Jedi for selfless reasons and on behalf of others than just his family... and thus, he tried to backtrack in his learning.

It wasn't until the time when he took his first training saber, when he ignited that artificial blade that he felt for the first time the warm and relaxing touch... when he could understand the calmness... the connection towards his surroundings... with his target... the first time they were expected to spar and feel how a training saber would feel, what would do to someone who came in contact with the blade and understand not just how to wield it, but to go deeper in it's connection... it was then when Master Selak instructed Piodas in how his connection to the Force was at the moment linked to his feelings in battle, in a conflict against someone else... and how he had to learn to expand that to something more since battle was not the Jedi way... at least not always.

The young man has come a long way since understanding that point, and he felt now the Force in different levels, but he would be lying if he said that his connection didn't feel stronger when wielding his training saber, and he just hoped that when the time comes, a real lightsaber in his hand would make him feel even closests to the Force.

After the lessons and different tasks, including that time he went with Evelynn to the Pool, he had reshaped himself and Master Selak knew this... otherwise he wouldn't be here... for that reason, when his time came, he just nodded with strong confidence and just waited there patiently for the next instructions their Master had.

Kit stood at stiff attention as Master Selak addressed the group. He was at the front, as usual, maybe even a half step closer than the rest of his peers. Kit knew that his eagerness to please their Nautolan teacher did not endear him to his friends, but Kit also knew, or at least thought he knew, the great burden that had been laid upon them at such a young age. They would learn, in time. They would see what he saw...

Padawan. Just hearing Master Selak say the word filled Kit with a pride he hadn't thought possible. The next step, the step he had been waiting for. Kit had been training for 12 years, denying himself the fun and play that most children filled their days with. Kit refused all of that. He instead chose a different path, one of discipline, one of dedication. Today it was worth it. Today was the next step.

As Master Selak continued, Kit's thoughts drifted to his homeworld. Well, homeworld was somewhat misleading as Pantora was technically a moon orbiting the icy giant Orto Plutonia, but for Kit and his people, the moon was their homeworld. A particular memory surfaced. It was winter, Kit's 4th, maybe his 5th, it was hard to recall details from so long ago. Unlike Orto Plutonia, Pantora was temperate, hospitable, but it was not a warm place. Kit woke from sleeping, screaming for his mother. The woman rushed in, worried. "Mother, it's cold." Kit's mother placed her hand on his forehead. "It's ok Kit, probably just a bad dream. The temperature regulator is working, and you're not feverish. It's perfectly warm in here." The child shook his head vigorously. "No. Not me. Not here. Someone is cold, terribly cold." Kit's mother was somewhat stunned, unable to respond, bu the boy simply took her hand and led her into the hall. Kit's family lived in a hab block for workers at the local manufactorium. Kit led his mother slowly down the hall, pausing briefly at each door, shaking his head. Finally he stopped. "Here. Something is wrong." Still confused, Kit's mother trusted him and knocked on the door. It took several minutes, and a few hard knocks, as it was the middle of the night, but the door finally opened. An icy blast hit Kit and his mother as a Pantoran woman wrapped in a heavy robe appeared. She angrily snapped, "Do you know what time it is?" Kit's mother responded, "I'm sorry, but my son thought something was wrong in here. Why is it so cold?" The woman looked back into her unit, "It appears our regulator broke, and my daughter seems to have forgotten to close the window when she snuck out." Kit pulled on his mother's sleeve. "Hurry, hurry, he's so cold." At that, the stranger snapped to full attention. She rushed deeper into the unit and Kit followed with his mother. In a small room, they found a baby shilled near to death, an open window next to him. Kit's mother turned, "Kit, run for father, get help!"

Taryn has been on edge since he woke up. Something was about to change. The last time he had felt like this was the day the Jedi came to take him away from home.
He lets his eyes wander around the meditation chamber, holding Avi's glance for a moment. His sense of foreboding lifts just from being in the same room.
And finds his thoughts drifting into the past as he listens to the Master's words...

Not all colonies are successful. Sykar was supposed to be a new beginning for a group of Alderaanians who had grown disgruntled with the increasingly corrupt Republic. Instead it had become a safe haven for pirates and other scum. The Jedi didn't protect them, they'd all gone off to fight their war, or so his mother told him. And then the war came to Sykar, and things got so much worse.
His family was gone now, lost to a Separatist bombardment, but he had already found a new one, mostly made up off other war orphans like himself. And he did his part to keep them safe and fed. He had an uncanny knack for picking easy marks, and today was no exception. The doohickey he pick pocketed should keep them fed for at least a week. He wasn't worried about the enraged Trandoshan pursuing him. He wondered how something with legs that long could be that slow.
And that's when he got overconfident and ran straight into the blind alley.

With seconds to act, he hid under the burnt out carcass of a battle droid.
'Please don't find me...please don't find me...please don't find me...' his soundless mantra went. And then his cover was torn away with a loud snarl. And then... nothing. As the Trandoshan looked right at him he felt a strange connection between them, that had always been there, he just hadn't noticed it before. He felt his fear vanish, replaced with a calm confidence. Looking up, he stared into his would-be eviscerator's eyes as they glazed over with confusion. The thug growled in frustration as he looked through the refuge piled up against the walls, unable to find his prey. After a few minutes he gave up and left, leaving a bewildered Taryn behind.

Turned out his haul was worth more than he had expected, the money they got lasted for almost a month.
Looking back on that period, for what little he remembers of it, it now doesn't feel like it had been such a bad time.

It was about a year after that that the Jedi finally did come to Sykar, to take him away. Another family lost, another one gained.

He turns toward Master Selak and nods slightly.

So... Padawan. At last. He wonders what will change now for them.

Master Selak motions for you to come forward one at a time and sit, cross-legged before him. Then he slowly and deliberately braids your hair, giving each of you your Padawan's braid.

Then he has you resume your position and he address you again.
The time for the passive study of the force is over. Now you must begin to actively learn the ways of the force. For the force is a living force, and you must learn to know it, and use it, as we are its chosen protectors.

You must learn how to call upon the power of the force at will. To do this, requires meditation and patience. Look at me? Do you see the expression on my face. It has taken me years of training to develop this level of serenity. But do not believe for a moment that I have no emotions. I feel love, duty, fear, anger, trust and hope, just like the rest of you. But unlike you, I have learnt to master my emotions, to control them and when I do...
his voice trails off and he points his arm towards a giant boulder in the middle of a zen like garden. He lifts it with the force moves it slowly and deliberately around the room before placing it back in its place.

You will also learn to do this. When you master your emotions you will learn to do amazing things with the force and now it is time to begin your active study of it. So what do you wish to learn? Do you want to be able to move things with the force? Do you wish to be able to enhance your body? Leap fantastic distances? Or sense the emotions of those around you? To heal or harm those who threaten innocnets? To get a glimpse of the future? Or to influence the weak minded?

As the other students go up to have their hair adjusted, Ian's eyes narrow with suspicion. With a small sigh, he goes forward but when he stands in front of Selak he lowers his voice and gives him a thumbs-up, hiding it behind his body from the rest of the students. "I'm -super- fine with my hair the way it is. No need ta unbraid it an then put it in'a worse braid, right?" Without really waiting for a reply he bows and retakes his place.

When Selak mentions training, Ian's eyes go back go the boulder for a moment, giving it a considering frown. His eyes narrow at it as he quietly contemplates something. Then, as if remembering himself he goes to look forward, putting his goofy grin back in place. He blinks his eyes innocently as he listens and mostly pays attention.

Zepharo chuckles mirthlessly, inwardly to himself at the oddly apropos symbolism, as kneels before the master and receives only some ritualistic motions, as he has no hair to braid. Just another way in which he doesn't see himself as being able to meet the expectations of a Padawan.

After they've all returned to their positions and the Master finishes his words, his eyes flick from side to side, trying to catch a glimpse of the reactions of his brothers and sisters. Unsure of what is to come next - the Master is speaking as if he's just going to bestow power upon them, is that possible? And as the oldest amongst his siblings ooc: I think that's true at 24(?), he resolves to try to be a leader for once.

This must be some sort of test..., he thinks.

He steps slightly forward, " Master, I am at peace with the Force, I am one with the Force. I ask of nothing of it, but I accept what it provides...", he steps back.

His nerves jangling, he closes his eyes just a moment again and goes into the slow meditative breathing, and again his mind goes to the hunt. To the chase. To the maneuvering. To the only place where he really finds peace here.
OOC:
He wants to be able to Leap great distances ;D

Evelynn, awed both by the words of their master moves forward reverently to allow Master Selak to braid a single, simple braid out of her long, flowing her. As she walks back to the group, her hand raises to her temple and feels the braid of hair in among the rest of the loose strands. More proudly than ever before, she turns and faces him as she waits while the others similarly receive their braids.

Her reverence for Master Selak only deepens as he continues, as he displays his faith, power, and skilled control of the Force while moving the massive boulder around the room. Quietly she contemplates what the future may hold for her, and as she does, her mind touches again, briefly, on the memories of the past. In particular the one which he most recently called to her mind.

"Master, as you know I have always sought to control my emotions as best I can and I strive to learn all that you can teach us. I would be humbled if you would help me deepen my senses of the world around me, help me to see and understand more so that I might better serve the Force as I feel I have always been destined to do." Once again speaking soft words, they nonetheless carry through the reverent silence of the cavern. Having spoken her piece, she settles in, patient as always, to hear how the Force will direct them all as they take their first steps as Padawans.

When it's her turn, I unceremonially walk to my master and offers him an overly forced smile.

I suppose, in a way, my master was right. I had felt it before, how my emotions affected my connection to the force. Made it more volatile. But I guess I always was emotional - Maybe the most emotional between all my peers. Master Selak says he can also love. Feel fear. Feel anger. He claims that this mastery is serenity. Wasn't this kind of serenity, of coldness, that caused us the need to hide away in a cave for so many years? One thing is to be able to control your own emotions. But to be able to shut them down so easily, or worse, mask them away as if they were a bruise that you can hide with your sleeves... That's scary.

Independently of Master Selak either just looking at me as I sit there because I have no hair to braid, or if he puts some weird beads over my head, I'll slowly get up and get back to the group.

I shoot Zafe a look, interested in gauging her reaction to all of this. With all of this talk about learning to do more stuff with the Force, I'm sure she's somewhat cheerful. As for myself, I don't know. Is anything really going to change after today? What does it matter if some of us can lift some rocks if we're probably going to die of old age in this cave?

The Force has always come to me. It has granted me visions, here and there. By knowing what's going to happen... I could gain control over my own life. It seems the natural option to learn to wield.

Ugh. Look at those two, humoring our Master. I sigh, trying not to be conflictive - What? We're talking about controlling emotions. "If we're picking what kind of uses we'd like to give the Force, then I would like to know what the future has in store." She says with a serious, nonchalantly expression.

Piodas understood a bit about why his Master always seemed stoic, since that is a trait he tried to adopt for a few years... and thus he has been able to control his desire to jump in based on emotion all the time... but keeping control of all the other emotions seemed something that require further training.

Still, the young man took a sit and waited his turn patiently... he heard the words Master Selak had to say about moving over to the next step towards being a real Jedi as they were meant to be.

His time came and passed... all in silence as he contemplated about how he would help others...how the Force could aid his abilities and how he could defend others properly.

Enhance his own body, leap distances... they seemed something that would aid him greatly... but for some reason they didn't resonate into a deeper level with him... but it was then when it struck him... how he felt and how he would be in a better position to help others with the assistance of the Force.

Piodas smiled briefly and looked at his Master dead in the eye "It is no surprise that I have tried to control my... let's say impulses... I am ready to allow the Force to guide me into deeper roads and through further paths... I would like to sense how it interacts with others and how it affects those around all of us"

With that said, Piodas just waited to hear what the rest had to say.
Feb 22, 2019 10:59 pm
Kit stepped forward eagerly. Waiting for this day was the one thing that kept him going through years of isolation.

"Resolution without violence, with both sides full and willing participants, that is the path to peace. That is the path that I strive to follow. I ask the Force to help show me the emotions and feelings of others, that I might better help bring about this peace."
Feb 22, 2019 11:34 pm
Zafe's feelings of happiness swell when it is her turn, repeatedly she tries to keep her master's words in mind. Be happy, but don't show it. Conceal, but be thankful.

Naturally she has trouble maintaining this state of mind, especially as he braids her "hair", but Zafe figures its the thought that counts, until she can practice it at least.

Looking at Avi's braid she senses confliction in her eyes, even now her defiance can't help but reveal itself. Zafe makes a note to spend some time with her afterwards.

"I hope the force can grant me the power to protect those who are in need, to go beyond what my physical body is capable of."

Taryn feels a reluctant respect for his master.
It's not just the overt display of his mastery of the Force, but the theatrics and the forethought put into it. This garden has been here for... ages, it was one of the first rooms that was made habitable, and that boulder has always been there, right in the middle, drawing attention to itself.
This entire speech, or rather performance... he must have had most of it ready for over a decade.
Now that, that is a lot more impressive than a good poker face.

Maybe he's letting his thoughts over the recent events between them influence his feelings, but the Master doesn't seem all that serene to him, just cold and hard.

He walks up, eyes downcast, and takes his place to have his hair braided, wondering if some ancient Jedi maybe came up with this tradition as a practical joke.

"I seek knowledge and wisdom, to minimise the suffering we will have to inflict on our enemies."

He's not really sure why he said that. It's not what he was going to say, the words just came to him at the last moment.

As the others speak on their desires and their feelings of connection to one aspect of the Force or another, Ian keeps his mouth shut, listening. There were no big surprises in what they had said and he was unconcerned with that anyways. Of greater importance is -how- they said it. Simple things like referring to the Force as a 'power' or the reverence to which they informed their master of their choices were filed away for later. Ian keeps his gaze forward, adding a few distracted looking sways on his heels, while wearing his grin as he pays -close- attention.

Out of all of them, only Taryn's response drew a reaction at all; a quick flick of his indigo gaze towards the other human. But whatever his thoughts on the matter they were kept as close to his chest as the rest of them because Ian had learned one lesson more than any of the others during their stay here. And it hadn't been something Master Selak has explicitly said but it was obvious in their isolation, in their comparatively sorry state, in their master's focus on stoicism at all costs . . .

The Jedi were their own worst enemy.

Alyx frowns thoughtfully, looking around at all of the other youths as their expressions change: wistful or dark, eyes open or closed, they all seem lost in memories. From the last twelve years with her "siblings," she has learned that she is probably the one who was the youngest among them when they joined the Jedi. She has no memory at all of the past, except vague recollections of strange movement, and a starfield blurring . . . a gentle laughing voice, but also terrible suffering and pain. All she remembers is that it was her fault, somehow . . .

She knows what the master has told her. That as the Jedi were fleeing attack, a stranger had landed his ship in the confusion, pushed his way through the crowds, and insisted that the small child he held be taken with the Jedi. "She has powers," the man had insisted. "They'll kill her if they stop my ship! I can't protect her."

She was told her mother had died, and her adopted father had feared for her safety. But she remembers that her presence caused him pain and sorrow. It was a problem, a memory disjointed and unfairly viewed through the lens of a small child - or so she had learned over the years, talking many times with the Master.

Those are the memories she has the most of. Growing up on this planet, hiding themselves from the citizens in the small village on the other side of the planet, and knowing that their presence could harm those innocent strangers... Alyx had struggled with the sensation that, yet again, her presence - the presence of ANY Jedi - only brought suffering and danger to the world.

She frowns, unsure of what to say, then finally admits, "I want to understand why the force allows evil to happen."

Master Selak calls you all back to the meditation chamber. A short time has passed and you all have a decent mastery over your new force powers.

You require one more thing before you can call yourselves Jedi Padawan. to demonstrate his point he ignites his lightsabre.
The construction of a Jedi's lightsabre is a right of passage and a time honoured tradition. It is a test of your ability to use the force and follow where it calls. The first step is to meditate. Resch out to the force and ask it where your crystal lies. Know there is a reason I chose this unnamed plant he says with a sly smile.
OOC:
For your next post, please meditate and tell me where you will find your crystal.

Zepharo kneels, sitting gently back on his heels, placing his palms downward on his knee-caps, and meditates in this ready posture.

As is always the case, he feels no call, and possesses no means by which he can reach out. And so he meditates, reflecting inward, as he always does, in the normal meditative fashion. He finds his place of quiet rapidly as he usually does, and dwells in that place, examining himself, until the stirring of others at the conclusion of their group meditation brings him out.

His head is clear, and he is at peace. But as his mind re-emerges into active thought, he hopes the Master doesn't confront him directly about this crystal business... he hopes he could just be left to his own devices on the matter. Perhaps he could follow one of his siblings and find something there, or just disappear into the jungle until he could think of what to say upon returning empty-handed?
OOC:
He'll find his out in some cliff crevice, out in the jungle.

Soon enough, we're all back to the meditation chamber. I take a quick look at my brothers and sisters, and a small, relaxed smile creeps in. No matter what, we have each other.

I perk up when I hear what Master Selak is talking about and unconsciously put my hand on my nape. Meditating again. I understand the point of the exercise, but sometimes I can't help but feel like we're wasting time. But... It's not like we have anywhere to be.

"Right. Will do." Avi wanted to catch up with a few of her siblings, to know what their test was about, but it seems that the ordeal wasn't yet over. She distances herself from the group, sitting on the floor and crossing her legs. Her eyes slowly close as she starts to try to find a kyber crystal - Her kyber crystal.

We've learned that everything is connected. What Avi has picked up is that these connections, these threads, they can be manipulated on their own. She has learned to read them, in some way, and that's probably why I have a tendency towards forseeing. Yet, to follow them shouldn't be too difficult, right? So I start to feel them, thread to thread, connection to connection, in the hopes of finding, well, something. I don't quite know what I'm searching for, but whatever I'm doing is bound to lead me to something, right? And that something will, hopefully, lead me to her crys - Avi eyes suddenly cloud themselves as she sees something. A patch of poisonous mushrooms. She has been there before. The centermost part of the patch is incredibly dense. It is underneath it that lies her crystal.

She opens her eyes and gets up shooting a rapid but tender stare at Taryn, as she approaches her master. "Hey. So, I found it. It's on..." She leans into her Master's ears and whispers to him. "Where you, uh, caught me and Taryn. By the shroom patch."

Sitting down with crisscrossed legs Zafe closes her eyes and breathes deep, just as she was taught. But she is far from calm, for how could she be? Her mind races with the possibilities of where to find this crystal, or how the process even works. Master Selak hasn't been wrong yet, so she'll just have to trust his instructions, considering the countless spots left unexplored on this planet.

Within the forest? Possibly, but surely someone would've seen them by now. Mountain peak? Too dangerous, plus it could be buried under the snow. Zafe feels a tingle of frustration, she never was much for sensing, how could she find what she hasn't yet seen? Although the race did introduce her to new sensations, the force physically moving through her body. It was different from when she swung a saber, or perhaps she had simply gotten used to the feeling.

Regardless she focused on that aspect, letting her mind wander until she picked up the prior feelings. Now she was getting somewhere, as if her body was being whisked away in the darkness, guiding her towards a bright light. And then it all becomes clear: a cave much like the one she is seated in, a glint of something shiny from the darkness within. But she feels the cold of snow, and the harsh wind against her body. "I see...on the mountain, there is a cave." Opening her eyes the vision fades, but she understands her destination.

Evelynn joins the others in the main meeting cavern following a lengthy session of her own meditations, thinking about how her experience in the darkened cave with Piodas had gone. While in the moment she had made some decisions that, looking back now, she has had a chance to reflect on and is beginning to possibly feel weren't right at the time. She was beginning to feel as those she had stepped away from her normal, methodical patience in waiting for the right path to present itself, and instead had acted rashly.

Shoving aside the a slightly queasy feeling at the thought, Evelynn sat when instructed, determined to let the Force guide her steps in this trial. Taking several deep breaths, she calmly sought that place within her that lay, tranquil as a still pond, that inner representation of her connection with the Force. In her mind's eye she saw herself, kneeling on the edge of the pond in perfect stillness and perfect patience. Outside, vaguely, she was aware of her siblings quiet movement, some of them speaking words she neither could nor even tried to make out. Focused entirely inward she felt herself reaching out, in peace and tranquility, towards her connection with the Force. As she did, it seemed as though her vision tunneled inward, focusing on the shining surface so still and calm as to almost seem a mirror. In it saw a million stars winking as though the waters were reflecting the night sky. She felt more than saw as one of those stars seemed to grow brighter and brighter.

Feeling this bright, twinkling mote which had separated itself from the masses, Evelynn knew that this was the guidance she'd waited for, this was to be her path. Before she even begin to sense anything about this bright light, she nearly gasped in shock as the star itself seemed to split into two, nearly identical sparks of light, then shoot upwards and out from the water's surface. Arcing through darkness, Evelynn felt these two embers, these two motes drifting until suddenly she had a sense of being, of whereness for lack of a better term. The thought of it made her shudder slightly before she disciplined herself and brought her fear under control.

Drawing in a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, Evelynn let herself finally sense the room around her and felt some of her sibling's gazes on her, no doubt waiting to hear what the Force had shown her. Her hands clutching the exquistely crafted hilt in her hands, she stood, and with a slight tremor in her voice she said, "Master... I am, unsure. I felt not one thing which could be a crystal, but two. Perhaps I am mistaken, for I believe that they are located deep within the caves, inside a chamber containing water, rock, and shadow. I do not know what my vision means..."

Back at the meditation chamber... the young man couldn't take his eyes away from the hilt that was given to him... especially since he was now with a greater amount of light.

Piodas raised his head as he noticed the other fellows coming back from training one by one... and as soon as they were all gathered, he just stored his hilt in his robes and then proceeded to listen to Master Selak.

It didn't take long for the Master to explain to his students the missing piece they all needed: a focusing crystal atuned with them... one that would allow them to create their very own lightsaber... only at that moment is when they would be called Jedi... Padawans... but Jedi nevertheless.

Following his instructions... Piodas took once again a seat in the ground in a lotus position... and with his newfound ability to sense his surroundings and his fellows... the warm feelings and strong sense of clarity provided by the nexus of Force Sensitive beings was clear for him... clearer than ever before... he was quite glad to be part of this bunch of people...

However, as he reached further and further in search for his crystal... his mind slowly trailed back to a known path... one that he has taken quite long ago... Master Selak was wise and his instructions in order to get training were congruent with previous teachings... or it might have been a coincidence, but there is no chance or coincidence when talking about the Will of the Force.

As he pinpointed the location with the help of the Force... and a lone crystal calling out to him in a cold place... he could feel the distinctive warmness similar to that touch of the Force when he reached to his teammates... but felt personal, closer... alive and at the same time... it wasn't.

"I hear it..." he whispered as he opened his eyes "...it is deep in the caves. In a known path I have taken before... it's like it has always been there waiting for me and the right time"
Mar 5, 2019 9:51 pm
Taryn shared a brief look with Avi as they entered the chamber. He wished he'd had the chance to talk with her about their newly learned abilities. He'd often found her more intuitive approach to the Force helpful.

So... their very own Kyber crystals. He knew some of the others had practically been obsessing over this for ages, but he didn't really care that much. It's not as if he'd ever shown the slightest talent for the Lightsaber, despite many, many hours and days of intensive practice.
The Master often told him it would come to him when the moment was there, but then he's always saying stuff like that about everything.

Kneeling down, he closes his eyes. The serene calm state of deep meditation comes easier and easier to him. So maybe there is something to be said for practice.

Not really knowing what else to do, he concentrates on the only Kyber crystal he knows, the one right here in this chamber, in his master's Lightsaber. It takes a while, but after a while he becomes aware of... something there. A minute presence, somehow intrinsically intertwined with that of Master Selak. Letting go of that image, he widens his perception beyond this chamber.
He stops trying to look, and instead lets the Force guide his vision. He becomes slowly aware of tiny little... presences, like lights, warm, soothing. Dozens or even hundreds of them, all around them, scattered throughout the caves. He I sure he wouldn't be able to feel even a single one of them if he were actively looking for one. He thinks he feels some of them connecting to his siblings. None of them call out to him though.

No, that's not right. There is something, similar, but different. Hard to pinpoint, both weaker and more distant. He tries to isolate the 'signal', slowly and meticulously blotting out everything else in his vision.
There it is. It's... cold. Harsh. Too bright to look at. Not so much calling out as screaming in pain and rage. He tries to reach out, to touch it with his mind. And intense cold floods his soul when he connects to it. It feels painful in his mind. In a way, it feels very similar to his own old pains. It feels like an orphan.

He pushes down the emotions he's feeling. Trying to analyse the thing itself. It's definitely a Kyber crystal of some sort. To the north. Deep into the caves, far deeper than they have explored, as far as he knows. Three, maybe four days travel...
Mar 6, 2019 4:05 am
After their talk, Ian seems mostly focused on actually following along with Master Selak's lesson and -not- trying to mentally disrupt the other students. He goes to smoothly sit in what appears to be a proper meditative pose. He is towards the back of the room, hiding himself in the shadows because it would ruin his reputation among the others to see him taking things seriously. Slowing his breathing he closes his eyes and lets go . . .

Dark shadows, dim light and the sound of whispering wind greet him. A cold chill works through the air of wherever he is. The icy blue light that barely illuminates the area around him pulses, flickers and grows a little brighter. A sense of dread comes over him as he hears bootsteps approaching. Around the corner comes a trio of black-clad figures, their clothes making the quiet creak of leather. As they approach Ian makes out what looks like three humanoids wearing a armored uniform of some sort. They pass through him, as though he were a ghost, leaving the momentary memory of their insides for him to ponder. The last one is a tall, beastly male of indeterminate species and as they pass, Ian turns to watch them, his long braid trailing behind him, confused and lost as to how this has anything to do with a crystal.

As soon as the thought of one forms in his mind he can feel the thrum of the Force, like a low rumble. His hand comes up instinctively as if reaching for something. From the large man's belt flies a cylinder that Ian catches it by instinct, his thumb rising to where the ignition switch on a lightsaber would be. A blood red blade forms with a snap-hiss, casting a crimson light upon all four of them. The three armored figures turn, startled and shocked, looking Ian up and down before they go to draw their own lightsabers, each one holding a red blade.

Mouth hanging open Ian snaps out of his meditation, finding himself back home but covered in a cold sweat. His normally cheerful complexion is pale and his breathing shakes. He tries to blink the shocked look in his eyes away, looking down at his hand as if expecting to still see the lightsaber he had taken there. The human gulps and goes to stand up, looking first around the room at the other students to see if any of them were looking at him before raising his hand. "Sir? I think I gotta problem . . ."

let me know if this is too much and I will change it...
When Alyx obediently sits to meditate, she lets her mind drift within the Force. Constant practice allows reality to fall away, breath by breath. As if holding out an offering to the Force, she broaches the subject carefully. A crystal, to help me right the wrongs, she tells the Force, and it shudders against her. Her thoughts twist and float away from the planet, and she tries again. A crystal, to help me balance the Force, and it seems as if it is chuckling gently at her now. Suddenly, the sensation of whirling into outer space overtakes her, and she finds herself unable to move.

In space, dark and vast, she hangs: without body, without substance. Without lungs to breath, she cannot suffocate. Without sight, yet she can see the barest of glints from distant stars, strong and unglittering in the depths of space. Her thoughts slow, crawling and sputtering out. Finally, she succumbs to the Force.

Your Will. Whatever you may wish of me.

In an instant, she feels herself snapped back, and she gasps for air from her spot on the cold stone ground of the meditation hall. Blearily, she sees Ian raise his hand and hears him speak: "Sir? I think I got a problem . . ."

She watches as if through water, then shakes the buzzing out of her head, a last echoing sensation whispering to her, "Not now, Child."

Master Selak looks towards Ian as he mentions his problem.

There are no problems that the lot of you cannot overcome together. Trust in one another and trust in the force and you can do anything. Your next task is to help each other locate your crystals and build your lightsabres. After you have each found your crystal, I will teach you how to construct your lightsabres. As I expect your journey to be quite dangerous, you may help yourselves to whatever provisions and supplies you need here before you leave. Good luck everyone and may the force be with you.

We are off, Taryn or Avi, I'd like a check to navigate the caverns. (I think survival will do nicely.)

Evelynn is very somber and solemn as she goes about gather up supplies for the journey to retrieve her apparent two crystals. Absently she gathers up a few days worth of rations, a bedroll and blanket, and other basic survival gear. Thinking back to her visions, with one crystal seeming to hang in the air, she adds in a set of climbing gear. The second crystal, as she thinks about it, felt deeper than the other. She remembered feeling pressure, like a weight holding her down, and coldness. She assumes that that means it's likely underwater, and grabs a breather as well and makes sure it's fully charged. Feeling that she is as packed up and prepared as she can be, she heads off towards where the others are gathering, making it just in time to hear Master Selak's words and see him handing the strange looking cube to Ian. Nodding to him she says, "The Force is our guide, Master, as you have taught. We'll see you all when we return."

The journey is long but not particularly arduous. You make your way steadily down but soon lose all other sense of direction. The cave system is a mixture of tightly winding passages and massive open caverns. There is plenty of moisture in the cave and at several points, your path is intersected by a massive subterranean river.

Taryn has a little trouble here and there as he remembers his past journey with Avi, but on the whole you make it without a problem. Suddenly, Taryn raises a hand in warning as you feel drops of water drip onto you from the stalagtites above. The air is noticably warmer. Using the light from your lightsticks you notice that mould has begun to cling to the floor, walls and roof of the cavern.
They are poisonous, Taryn says pointing towards an otherwise innocent looking mushroom.

As he leads you a little further, the mushrooms grow increasingly more dense until they cover a massive chamber as big as your home complex.

Beneath that is a rigid, harsh sort of control coupled with his usual sense of humor. "This place sure brings up memories, yeah?" Avi half-giggles embarrassedly, trying to gauge Taryn's reaction in a quick glance, her stare finally resting on the mushrooms that stand guarding her crystal. It's... There. Somewhere.

She lets a breath she didn't know was holding out as she finally is about to face her trial. The warmness of the cave is familiar, pressuring. Absentmindedly, she looks at Taryn again, and when she realizes what's happening she can't help but chuckle shily as her star falls on the floor. Her cute expression quickly dissolves into a worried frown, however.

"I hope Master Selak will turn out okay if Ian's vision is really to worry. But... We talked a lot, during our trial. And not about our trial." Not sure what to say next, she closes her eyes and starts to concentrate on it again. The threads of the force, the possibilities, and variations.
OOC:
Whoops. I think we're all pretty sure that Avi is going to be the first to fall anyways, right? x) Anyway yeaaah... I'm gonna spend it.
But she's really not in a perfect state of mind whenever she's around Taryn. The threads keep slipping through her fingers no matter what. Well, whatever! If fate won't come to her, she will bring it to her. She aggressively pulls one into her direction. Finally, with it in hand, she reads it.

She sees the mushrooms. The centermost of the field. But those are... Different. They feel... Heavier, trickier. Feisty? Arduous. Unreal. She sees herself. And spores. She's talking to nothing.

Hm.

She clicks her tongue as she opens her eyes, a decisive frown on her faces as she approaches the mushrooms. "Hey, T, feel free to keep going. I... Should probably do this alone.".

Independently of what Taryn does, Avi will proceed to look around, with the hopes of finding something that may help her journey into the field: Be it a load of head-sized rocks she can use to step on the mushrooms, or even a way into the center that is not necessarily full of the poisonous fungi.
OOC:
I'm assuming this is Perception? If it's survival, just ignore the Proficiency die.
There is, however, no lighter path of mushrooms. She is lucky enough to find two big rocks, though. Big enough for her to carry and throw them, big enough for her to be able to stand on them easily, and square-ish enough for her not to slip on in. She dries them as best as she can, looking at the center of the field... And sighs. This is going to take a while.

She will then proceed to let go the first rock on the field and step on it. She will step into the second, do the same thing, step into the second, grab the first, and rinse and repeat. Never actually throwing the rock off, just to make sure she doesn't have to accidentally leap between them. Especially because she'd be rockless.

"What is it, anyway?" she wonders out loud, walking just behind Ian into the caverns.

@Alyx: Yikes. Um, you could try lore difficulty 4. It is a stange cube shaped rock covered in carvings. Strangely, you can see the cube and the carvings even in pitch black darkness yet the cube seems to emit no light.

OOC:
@Avi: so no force event, huh? Ok then I'll take some initiative...
Avi makes her way to the center of the room and you all watch as a brilliant green crystal appears as if out of nowhere, in the middle of the chamber and drifts down towards her. As it slowly drifts down towards her, she extends a hand to catch it but the crystal slips through her fingers and continues to descend until it falls through the floor, yet no passage of its fall can be seen. The mushrooms on the ground have not been disturbed. Somehow, the crystal has passed right through the floor as if it were insubstantial.
OOC:
Avi: You sense your crystal is now directly below you.
As Avi moves a few rocks and tosses them into the field of poisonous mushrooms and moves towards the center of the cave, the rest of you notice something strange. Behind the large rocks there appears to be something on the wall of the cave. Some kind of carving.

Alyx looks at the cube and sighs, unable to figure out what the symbols mean. "I think this is a data cube," she tells Ian. "But the port doesn't look familiar. Maybe it's an antique?" She shrugs. "Seriously, you should take this, Master gave it to you for a reason." She walks faster to try and match Ian's longer stride, and waves the cube at him. "Take it!"

I would like for this post to take place a few minutes after their departure since Master Selak watching them go is what would trigger this. Oh, before I forget, Ian brought a Hand Scanner as a piece of survival gear as -soon- as he realizes they're headed into the caves, that's what he'd grab. He's going to use it to take readings to help build a map so they don't get lost.
With a put-upon sigh, Ian throws up his arms. Letting the smaller Zabrak catch up to him he irritably takes the cube back from her. "Man . . . why me?" He mutters quietly as he turns the cube over in his hands, "Bein' this responsible is gonna give me'a rash." As the group passes by the rock outcropping where Ian had hidden two blaster rifles, while everyone else was packing survival gear, the human glances back. While hidden from view from the Master's direction, probably anybody can see them from the student's angle.

As Master Selak watches them go, Ian's hackles rise. A chill washes over him as he's been raised to a hyper sense of alertness by past events. As his steps plod ahead, he falls quiet, indigo eyes narrowed in thought. The others around him seem to fade away before he suddenly says, "I fergot somethin'." He turns to the others and says, "I'm goin' back fer somethin' y'all go on ahead." He takes out the scanner he had packed and starts taking readings to build a map. Checking his pockets, the long-haired human sighs, "Anybody have'a spare comlink?"

Unwelcome and distracting memories, both good and bad, come to him as he recognises where they are.

"I hope Master Selak will turn out okay if Ian's vision is really to worry."
Taryn assures her it'll be fine, but thinking about it, he realises that even though he doesn't really want Selak to die, he certainly isn't going to mourn him if the vision comes true.

"Hey, T, feel free to keep going. I... Should probably do this alone."
As if. Taryn sits down at the edge of the cave, patiently waiting for Avi to finish. She's right that she should do this alone, and he certainly isn't going to interfere, but that doesn't mean he should just leave her alone.

When he spots some kind of irregularity in the cave wall, he gets up to investigate. He shines a light on the carving.

@Taryn: before you make your check I'm going to give you a couple of options. The poisonous mushrooms still cover most of the walls, obstructing a lot of the carving. You could clear them off but run the risk of releasing some poisonous spores, or you could make your roll at significantly greater difficulty.

Difficulty 4 if you don't clear the mushrooms.
Difficulty 2 if you do.

It seemed like you were implying in your original comment that Ian, Evelynn, Avi, and Taryn were going to travel together into the caves to find their crystals as a group. "No, I'm sorry. I only thought to bring the one I have. Didn't you grab one?" Evelynn asks Ian as they start out on their journey into the caves. He obviously didn't, or something, and she curiously watches as he heads back before returning with a rifle. Raising an eyebrow, she makes no further comment, the caves can sometimes be dangerous.

After a long hike through the tunnels of the cave system, expertly guided by Taryn who was always the best at navigating through them, Evelynn looks out over the mushroom filled cavern in wonder. She is always astonished at the diversity of these caves and isn't sure she'd ever been in this one before. However, as this was Avi's trial, she took a seat near the entrance and tried to quiet her rising sense of inner panic at the thought of what she might face. As Taryn got out the breather, she thought it might be a good idea as well and slipped her own on, but was intrigued by what he was checking out. Moving closer she also inspected the carvings on the wall, however, with all the spores kicked up by Taryn's attempts to clear them away, some of them land on her arm and start itching and she quickly backs off, happy to leave well enough alone.

Mar 25, 2019 11:05 am
OOC:
Sure, can go with that combined with the "poisonous mushroom" spores just causing irritation and stress. I'd say that, based on the description of them, she has an easier time seeing them, because they're some sort of luminous fungus, which would be a living thing and more connected with her Force-based "sight", but that whatever she sees makes no sense, but feels familiar and it distracts her/causes her some mental strain as she beats herself up over not knowing whatever it is.

With a put-upon expression, Alyx glares at Ian. "You're an idiot." When he looks back as if expecting something, she sighs and goes to double check her bag. "I don't have an extra one," she tells him as she looks inside, "nobody would bring an extra one, so I don't know why-"

She stops, then looks even more irritated, and takes something out of her bag, handing it to the older student who is now smirking at her. "I hate you," she tells him. "Don't get yourself killed by cave bats."

Hey, the crystal! There it is! Avi looks surprised when it shows up out of nowhere and just kinda drifts towards her. Slowly, she raises her arm to try to catch it. It's just a few inches away, she just has to — Uh, did it just slip away? Why is it descending? She tries to snatch it again but it's too late, for it just went, uh, through the mushrooms. And through the soil?

There's obviously something happening here. It shouldn't be able to go inside the floor like that. Thanks to Avi's vision, she'd naturally think it's an illusion. But... She can feel it. Down there.

She stares at the mushroom, doubting what she just saw, her hands naturally resting on her hips. There's... Gotta be something wrong. Maybe the place is messing with her senses? That could be it, right? Still, she should confirm that the floor is actually solid.
OOC:
As I mentioned in Taryn's and Avi's relationship prompt thingie, this is the place where they made out. In the same prompt, I also said that our Master uses these shrooms for whatever and task us in getting a few of them from time to time. In what way are they toxic, I wonder? Do they emit spores? Because we have to be able to harvest them before. Logically, I can see how different their effect on us might be if someone's standing on the middle of the field instead of the edge, carefully harvesting them one by one. If the mushrooms have a continuous passive effect, then she'll just rip off a few of them and touch the floor. Otherwise, if they react to someone's touch, I feel like she'd naturally have brought something to handle them, like shears. Still, I can roll Vigilance for retroactive preparedness if you want, Arina.
Mar 25, 2019 8:58 pm
The smirk turns into a shit-eating grin as Ian takes the extra comlink from Alyx. Clipping it to the inside of his pocket he jogs back before they get too far in order to collect both rifles from his hiding spot. He had wanted them hidden in case they needed them on the way back but Master Selak's strange behavior as of late has changed him, at least a little. Shouldering both rifles from the blanket they're hidden under he starts the walk back, mind drifting to the nightmarish hellscape he remembered as a child.

By the time he has returned to the group, however, his trickster grin is back in place and the map on his scanner grows. He glances around seeing everyone climbing through mushroom patches and scratching at walls. Tilting his head like a confused puppy he glances among the others before saying quietly, "Whad'I miss?"
Mar 25, 2019 9:26 pm
@Ian: Your had scanner picks up something the others don't seem to realise. Therr is clearly a hidden passage on one side of the cavern. The others cannot see it because mushrooms have completely grown over it, but your scanner can pick up the change in density.
OOC:
@Avi: Please feel free to add details however you like but I envisioned the mushrooms as having toxic spores. They're not gonna hurt you unless you disturb them. Although a few might burst randomly.
Mar 25, 2019 11:03 pm
Raising his scanner, Ian frowns at it before standing in front of the mushroom wall. "Guys? There's somethin' b'hind this wall. He gestures for the others to get clear, "Stand back. I'mma try'n clear it." Waiting until everyone is clear, Ian looks down at the scanner, clarifying for himself where the passage is. Raising a hand he closes his eyes and lets out a slow breath. Reaching out with the Force he attempts to clear away the mushrooms slowly, hoping to avoid a cloud of spores.

Slowly and carefully, Ian works to shift the fungus aside, hoping to shift it just enough to expose the entrance. Still, there is a tendril of fear and caution that continue to run through him.
OOC:
I would like to also use a Boost die for being careful, essentially aiming. Just because Ian is at a distance doesn't mean he's going to take chances. I will take that point of Conflict, please.

Let's just say that you manage to clear away the mushrooms.
There is nothing beneath them but warm warm, hard stone. There is no sign of your crystal but when you close your eyes, you can almost feel it deep beneath the stone below you somewhere.

@Ian
As soon as Ian clears the mushrooms you hear a ghastly noise and feel a rush of wind whip past your face, and the air itself screams out as if in anguish. You can't help but feel a deep sense of foreboding as you look into the tunnel that descends deeper into the mountain.

Looking at the tunnel itself, you see clear signs that it was not naturally made. You see places in the wall where primitive tools have been used to hack away at the stone and the floor of the tunnel has been cut into a crude staircase with very uneven steps. The place looks old. Very old. You feel as though you have disturbed something by your very presence.

What do you do?

I'm. A little unclear on something too. In a non-rushed, non-combat situation like this, can someone just refuse the dark side point and then . . . try again right after?
Mar 26, 2019 9:47 pm
OOC:
So, I am not totally familiar with the FFG system, however, in every other system I have played it comes down to risk of failue. So what might happen if you fail your task? If nothing bad would happen then there is no reason why you couldn't simply try and try again until you suceeded. So no need to roll. In this case, you are in a cavern filled with poisonous and possibly toxic mushrooms...

OOC:
I would also throw it out there that "seeking" the Force again and again in the fashion you describe - trying to get the "right" hold on it - is a narrative/rp sign of frustration and/or a desire for power OR fear of failure, just as surely as using a dark pip is, and IMO the GM is well within their narrative rights to either assign Conflict outright for that, or to have a player make a Discipline check or something to avoid the Conflict.

Iterative rolls are kind of gameable in this system (useable to stack Boosts upon Boosts before making the "final" roll, for example), and should be avoided, IMO.

Not allowing iterative rolls is explainable in the fiction by the fact that, unless something significant has changed about the situation, your single/first roll represents your best efforts given the circumstances.

Of course it's Arina's game and they should run it how they like, but just wanted to share my experiences.

@Emsquared: Thanks for your input. I agree with everything you have said. But I don't want to issue conflict without a player's consent. I will always try to warn everyone if their character's actions will generate conflict.

Evelynn had returned to the cave entrance after her encounter with the cloud of toxic mushroom spores, hoping to let Avi be able to focus on her challenge as well as let the itching subside, however her head whips around at the sound the wind rushing through the cavern, what could almost be imagined as a wailing screech. Stepping towards the now exposed "secret passage", Evelynn uses her own unique sight to try and ascertain what's down the rough, uneven steps even as she centers herself and attempts to reach out with her newfound Sense as well.
OOC:
Arina, I'm going to try and make a Perception check to see if I can hear/see anything down the passage, and I'm adding in a Force die to represent using Sense as well trying to feel for living things. You can roll difficulty against me later and adjudicate the result. She does not use the dark side pip, so Sense fails.

Edit. Yikes
You don't gain a sense of what there is below. In fact your ability to sense and see through the force is severely limited. You have never felt this way before. It is as if something is interfering with your force abilities. You're not sure what could do that, but it's surely nothing good. You have a very bad feeling about this. It causes you 2 points of strain.

However, you do notice something. Lining the walls of the tunnel you do see a series of crude carvings. Strange lizard-like bipedal aliens with a single eye and large, long tails tipped with a club like boned structure are doing battle with some quadrapeds. The lizard creatures seem sentient as they are wearing primitive clothing and use stone age weapons. One thing that immediately catches your eye is the fact that their weapons seem to have been depicted with crystal tips. Could they have used Kyber crystals as some kind of primitive stone aged spears? You're not sure.

There appears to be several more carvings, that line the walls as the passage continues down.

Do you descend?

Evelynn recoils from the foreboding feeling she gets as she tries to get a sense of what's in the passage beyond. Turning towards the group she looks especially towards Avi and asks, "Well, Avi. This is your crystal. I have a bad feeling about this passage, but this is where the Force guided us. Do you wish for us to accompany you?"
Mar 27, 2019 2:35 pm
Zepharo pulls a thin-cloth scarf up to cover his mouth and nose, as the "breath" issues forth from the passage, and he growls some words, "The Force didn't tell you that you must do this alone, did it sister? I will go with you."
Mar 27, 2019 10:50 pm
Taryn's voice sounds slightly muffled through the breather.
"I concur with Evelynn: this is probably part of Avi's trial. It's her trial, she calls the shots. We talk a lot about trusting the Force. I suggest we actually do that, and maybe put some trust in ourselves as well."

He uses his cloak to wave a thick cloud of spores away from his face.
"... and maybe in the meantime, find a less narcotic place to wait for her? This drenn wasn't as bad where we came in."
Mar 28, 2019 2:14 pm
Alyx watches everything with a deep sense of dread that only worsens the more everyone speaks about the strange passageway and getting Avi's stone. Being the youngest, she doesn't speak up; she wishes, in fact, to be anywhere but here right now. Leading a meditation is one thing, but this kind of choice is one she's not comfortable making. Glad it's not MY stone . . .

She quietly slips in-between them as they discuss what to do, and takes Ian's arm. "Come on," she whispers. "I want to leave. Let's leave, okay?" Her dark blue eyes do little to hide the fear she is trying to calm.
Mar 28, 2019 4:51 pm
Licking his lips nervously, Ian nods. "Yeah. Okay." It's not immediately clear who he's responding to, Alyx or Taryn, but he goes to take the Zabrak by the shoulder, attempting to lead her away from the howling tunnel and towards an area without much in the way of spores. He passes her one of the blaster rifles he'd smuggled away, keeping the other slung over his back, as he gives her a grin. "Wanna learn how ta take scans?" Avi stares at the floor for more than a minute in quiet reflection, her eyes closing as to try to feel the crystal better. Still, the floor doesn't unmake itself for her or anything like that. What is happening? Are the mushrooms to blame?

She rises from her foot and crosses her arms, still thinking about what to do. She clearly can't dig up the floor. Maybe there's a hole around somewhere? Or...
OOC:
I'll be honest, I'm completely lost... I want to say that I should be rolling for Vigilance, to see if Avi picks up any hidden detail, but at the same time if I have to interpret it, should I just make stuff up in this case as well? Because it's one thing to fluff an attack, for example, and another something as like trying to find, well, something. Anyways... I'll be rolling Vigilance. Let me know, Arina, at any case. And sorry guys for taking so long! Edit: Well, nevermind. I failed!
Unaware of anything that could be, well, it, Avi simply sighs. She starts moving forward once again, from rock to rock, to where the crystal originally appeared, in the very center of the room. It had drifted down toward her, after all, and that she felt it under the floor didn't really mean it was there. Even so, she was curious: Would the sensation below the earth also move with her? Or would it be stuck there?

You received a force vision of your crystal. It sank through the stone. You look around but cannot see the crystal. It is gone. Still, you feel its presence far below you. There appears to be no direct way to get the crystal from your current location. Meanwhile, your companions, through Ian's use of a hand scanner, have found a secret passage, that is clearly not natural, that leads deeper into the moutain. As you make your way down the passage you see several more frescoes covering the walls of the tunnel.

The first depicts what appears to be the same alien in two pannels. In the first pannel it bears nothing but a simple staff. In the second pannel it bears a staff tipped with a crystal.

The second fresco has three pannels. The first shows depicts an obelisk with a hand print in the center of it
The second shows a crowd watching four bipedal aliens battling a giant four legged alien. The third depicts a single alien raising his staff to the heavens in triumph.

The third fresco has two pannels. The first shows an alien swimming and the second shows the alien walking through fire.

The fourth fresco shows the alien in supplication before a giant monster with a benevolent look upon its (the monster's) face.

The fifth and final fresco shows the alien returning to its people with its crystal. The alien is hailed as a hero and you see what is clearly some kind of feast. The final pannel shows a legion or crstal armed aliens doing battle with... the rest of the pannel has been destroyed.

Okay, so I added it to my earlier post. I messed up on the difficulty side but I fixed it and, added altogether I got 1 Success and 2 Threat. Do you have anything in particular you want for the threats? I have an idea in mind but if you have something, let me know.

OOC:
Entirely up to you. Far be it for me to tell you how this effects your character. However, I am happy to offer ideas. Your master gave you something very valuable and important. That might make Ian feel a little uneasy as he is not used to having responsibility.

Anyway, would you like to decide what the item is or shall I?
Apr 1, 2019 5:57 am
Taking a moment as she passes each fresco she considers the implications as she goes. If these crystals are kyber crystals, then whoever these aliens depicted in the frescos are obviously figured out some way to use them as weapons. Deep inside her that strikes a chord of dissonance and she feels slightly uneasy at sight as their Master had always taught them that a lightsaber, while an important tool in a Jedi's arsenal, was only that: a tool. And one to be used only as a last result as well. Feeling more and more disturbed as she makes he way through the darkness, Evelynn presses forward, feeling the call of her crystals.

Well, see, I'm a bit of two minds about this.

There's at least three good in character reasons why Taryn would stay behind with Avi, and none that I can think of why he would leave her behind.

The only reason he would come along is entirely ooc, so that I would have something to do this week.

Alyx (and I'm assuming Ian also) really like Evelynn so if she started acting dazed and weird and went into the scary corridor, I think we would follow her.

Ian stares at the cube for a moment, seemingly lost in thought. Alyx starts talking but instead of really paying attention he seems drawn to a section of the cube that looks like it could be manipulated with just a little Force. As if in a dream he raises his hand before he is distracted by the Zabrak girl shouting about Evelynn heading down into the passage. With a scowl he drops the cube into his backpack and hefts his blaster rifle. "Sonofabitch. You gotta be kiddin' me . . . With that he catches up to Alyx and heads down the stairs with her to chase after Evelynn.

@Taryn: Character motivation coming right atcha.
As you stand and contemplate Avi's task, you feel conflicted. You want to help her but you also know that this task is meant for her alone.

You watch as your friends take the tunnel leading deeper into the dark tunnel. Suddenly, you are almost overwhelmed by a feeling of unfathomable pain. It reminds you of your vision. It could he a coincidence. Then you remember Master Selak's words There are no coincidences. There is only the the force
Apr 1, 2019 11:59 pm
@Everyone:

The tunnel opens up into a massive chamber. Taking a moment to take it all in, you seem to be standing in the middle of a massive stadium. You see a small wall, perhaps ten feet high, that surrounds the oval chamber and above the wall, row upon row of seats have been carved into the stone. In the middle of the arena, there is a massive black obelisk, not far from where you have entered. There are no apparent exits to the room.

Suddenly, you all feel a massige surge of fear, rage and death, as if countless lives have all met violent ends in this chamber. This place surges with dark energy.
OOC:
Everyone with morality of 50 or above takes 2 points of strain (which I think is all of you).
What do you do?

"Okay." Ian raises his hand, "Nobody move 'till we get us a strategy in place. If this room could talk it'd be sayin' 'fuck you'." He goes to point at the wall surrounding the pit, "We've got two rifles, so we should get shooters up on'the ledge there." The arena seems as though it has been deserted for a thousand years but Ian is acting like its inhabitants are just laying in wait to strike at them.

Interestingly, the stone looks spotless. There isn't even a speck of dust anywhere. However, it is as silent as the grave. It almost seems like there is an air of expectation in the air, as if the place is waiting for you to do something.

"I don't think reacting violently is a good idea," Alyx tells Ian, glancing nervously at the other students to gauge their reactions. Meeting the dark side with more darkness can't defeat it, surely . . .

She closes her eyes, and tries to ask the Force for help in healing this wound within it.

Oh and about the darkenss, I assume some of you have brought glowrods or some kind of light source. Otherwise you would be in pitch black darkness right now.
Apr 2, 2019 5:47 am
OOC:
Evelynn has no glowrod, not really needing it, but I assume the others have some sort of illumination.
As she leads the way into the large stadium-like cavern, Evelynn recoils as the massive surge of fear, rage, and death wash over her. Even without opening her senses, she can feel the dark side presence in the room. As Zepharo skirts the edge, and Ian unlimbers the rifles he carries, Evelynn takes a step forward, towards the obelisk she can feel in the center of the room. As she does, she attempts to reach down into herself, to call forth the light side of the Force and tries to project it outward, a counter to the darkness she feels clinging to the chamber.
OOC:
I was thinking to maybe make a Discipline check, with or without a Force die maybe, to try and draw on the lightside. Help to bring balance to what she thinks could be a Force Nexus, if she knows what the is. She is intentionally not drawing a weapon as she moves, also.

Apr 2, 2019 3:21 pm
OOC: how far is it from the edge of the arena to the centre, in both meters and range bands?
OOC2: I don't think swinging the Force balance here is something even Yoda could pull off...
OOC3: Taryn uses all four Advantages to try and get some insight into what is/was going on here.

"Just go, I'll be fine..." Avi him.

"If you insist. I still think it's bad idea to split up." He gives her a short hug and gives her his comlink [ooc: well, obviously only if she doesn't have one already].

Hastily he runs after the others into the hidden tunnel.
Marvelling at the statues he makes his way. He wonders if these are natives or some other species he is unfamiliar with.

The deep sense of foreboding that washes over them as they enter the arena seems oddly familiar. It reminds him of his crystal visions. He does the best he can to push the fear he'sfeeling out of his mind."

"How has this been here all this time without any of us sensing it?" he wonders out loud. "Maybe it's just 'woken up' only recently?"

"We've got two rifles, so we should get shooters up on'the ledge there."
"I don't think reacting violently is a good idea."

"Three rifles," he says as he pulls his robes aside, showing the blaster at his belt."but I'm with Alyx on this. This doesn't seem the kind of thing you can fight. Does anybody sense anything living? Ian, can that gadget do a life scan?"

He shines his glowrod at the obelisk and starts to walk slowly towards it. "I wonder if this was an arena, or some kind of temple where they sacrificed people to that... big... rock thing there."

Sensing what Alyx and Evellyn are trying to do, he adds his spiritual strength to theirs.

Because he doesn't want to help her, he just doesn't want to leave her all alone by herself. He'd have been quite happy to just sit there at the entrance of the cave and meditate until she was done.
Plus, unlike the others he's not super-eager to find lightsaber crystals that he doesn't have an immediate use for until he buys his second specialisation and puts a lot of XP in Lightsaber.
And he does believe in coincidences, and takes whatever master Selak says with a large grain of salt.

Moving closer to Alyx and Evelynn, the long haired Padawan seems to draws some measure of calm from the points of light from his fellow students. He starts to raise the scanner to check for life forms but something stops him. A sense of something else, something more at play. Lowering the scanner he lets out of slow breath, indigo eyes drifting closed. A rushing sound in his ears, like a thrum or a rumble rolls through him.

Another slow breath, in through the nose, out through the mouth before Ian opens his eyes. He takes a step forward, towards the obelisk. His emotions are calm but not peaceful. Confrontation without anger. Another step and he reaches out towards the Force, towards the darkness. "What happened here was wrong." His voice is low, barely even a whisper. Unafraid for the first time in hours, Ian approaches the obelisk, raises his hand as if to touch it. Silently he -thinks- at the obelisk, not believing for a second that anything that happens here depends on physical actions. It's okay ta be angry . . . Show me.
OOC:
If no one stops him, go ahead and assume he's touching the obelisk, Arina.

With so many of them focused so intently on the same goal, Evelynn can't help but feel the kinship of her adopted brothers and sisters as she reaches for the lightside within herself. As Taryn asks after life forms, she opens and extends her senses for the first time since entering the room, reaching out for life around her.
OOC:
Evelynn will use those light pips to detect life, and if she senses it as well, will stop Ian from placing his hand on the obelisk. I'm gonna let you adjudicate the Sense roll, plus what the Discipline checks do, but will proceed with what Evelynn does. I can come back and edit later if need be based on how things play out.
"No, brother. This trial is mine to face, with the help of all of your strengths. Let me." Grasping Ian's hand, she lowers it, nods in thanks, then reaches out herself towards the obelisk.

OOC:
Ok everyone. This post was supposed to have been made yesterday but I managed to catch the flu. Anyway, please bear with me as there is quite a lot going on in this scene.

Firstly, regarding the size of the arena. I will give you the dimensions and range bands but I want to make this very clear. I have no intention whatsoever of using a measurement to range system consistently. So x meters will never equal 1 range band etc.

@Everyone rolling discipline checks: You feel that the dark presence is currently intangible. You cannot fight it in its current form. You need to get it to manifest itself in some way first.

@Evelynn: Your sense skill fails. You simply don't have the training necessary to maintain concentration and summon the light side in such a dark place.

@Taryn: Aside from the obvious blood sports that took place here. This is more than just a place of dark entertainment. You think that this place served as a kind of religious function or perhaps a rite of passage for these ancient aliens.
The pit of the arena is oval in shape, 100 meters long and 60 meters wide. The obelisk is in the center of the arena. There are two range bands in the arena so no matter where you are in the pit the maximum distance you can be from something else is medium range.

You all feel an oppressive, almost suffocating presence in the arena. The air is thick with tension and it builds with every step Evelynn and Ian take towards the obelisk. It almost breaks as Ian reaches out to touch the obelisk. Then it breaks when Evelynn touches the surface of the obelisk.

The moment she does, you all hear a voice. The voice booms and riverberates through your skull.
YOUR SACRIFICE IS ACCEPTED. THE PACT REMAINS. WELCOME INITIATE. POWER OR DEATH SHALL BE YOURS.
OOC:
Please let me know exactly where your character is at this current moment. Oh and give me a cool check while you're at it :)

"We're probably just feeling an echo of something long gone..."

"YOUR SACRIFICE IS ACCEPTED. THE PACT REMAINS. WELCOME INITIATE. POWER OR DEATH SHALL BE YOURS."

"What the frell !?!" he exclaims as he instinctively jumps a few steps back.

"Hmmm. I think I get it now. These people worshipped some kind of Dark Side being, or even some Sith or fallen Jedi who set himself up here as a god, gorging himself on the fear and hate and deaths of the combatants and the blood-lust of the audience..."

He checks his rifle and sets it to stun, but doesn't draw it from the holster. "We probably should try and not feed it anything, try to keep our negative emotions in check..."

Range:
Engaged: Ian and Evelynn.
Short: Taryn and Alyx
Medium: Zapharo

Environment. It is impossible for you to use the light side of the force here, but it would be so easy to use the dark side. Should you wish to, anyone may automatically succeed in generating 2 dark side pips on any check to use a force power.
You all watch as a massive four legged creature with two massive claws for arms rips itself out of the ground beneath your feet. Its slim, athletic body is covered in a thick shell, and it has a long thin head with a large mouth filled with very sharp teeth. It lets out a terrifying roar challenging you all. Victory or Death it seems to be saying.
OOC:
As a side note, this creature is sil 2 and stands a little over 3 meters tall (roughly 10 feet). It is a nemesis, so it has the advesary trait. Everyone, please upgrade the difficulty of all of your attacks by 1. It also has M/R defense 2, so please add 2 setback dice to all of your rolls. If you need any more information in order to make your post then just let me know :)

Hey guys, I think you are both missing a red die. If I understand the advesary trait. At short range you would have 1 difficulty die from range, 2 more for its M/R Defence, so a total of 3 purples. Then advesary upgrades one of those purples into a red die. Please let me know if I am wrong.

Also, if you could please post your total damage then that would save me a lot of time.
Apr 5, 2019 8:20 am
ooc: defense setback dice are always black. Also, not all Nemesiseses have the Adversary talent, just saying. Adversary doesn't upgrade everything to red. If it has Adversary 1, it upgrades difficulty once, turning PPBB into RPBB. If it has Adversary 4, it upgrades Difficulty 4 times, turning PPBB into RRRBB. Setback dice can't be upgraded or downgraded.
OOC2: what colour us everybody using for OOCs? I think I asked before once.

Taryn mutters a curse in Twi'lek and moves a few steps away from the beast.

He feels it's important not to act on fear. He tries to steady his nerves as he draws his weapon and takes aim.

Evelynn jumps a little as the voice booms out over the arena, she had been expecting something, but it still startled here just a bit. However, they'd spent years training with their Master to overcome shock and surprise and to act, so Evelynn instinctively slide away from the obelisk at Ian's touch, her hand dropping down to pull her training saber from her hip. As the beast burst forth from the ground, she felt the darkside energy roiling off the creature and knew that today's activities would only be resolved with aggressive negotiations. Sighing in resignation that it had to come to violence, she flicks on her blade and steps up the beast even as her brothers and sisters starting aiming their weapons and shooting.

The creature, though, is faster than she expected it to be, and her swings arc wide as it leaps and rolls away from her strikes, causing her to growl in frustration.
OOC:
I am going to assume that Evelynn was in engaged range with the creature, since she was at the obelisk when it burst from the ground, if not I can take a Move maneuver for 2 strain to engage it, just let me know.

OOC:
@Evelynn: You were engaged, so no need to take any strain.
Apr 6, 2019 9:35 am
OOC:

I will make my next post after the weekend. Please take your next turn before then.
The creature rushes up to Evelynn and lands a massive blow dealing 10 damage to her almost laying her out. Then, just before it can finish her off, Zapharos unleashes a barrage against the creature and drives it back.

Despite all of your efforts, only Zapharos manages to wound the thing due to its massive armoured carapace.

The voice screams out again as Evelynn's blood hits the sand.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS! I FEEL YOUR PAIN! YOUR DOOM IS UPON YOU! HERE! TAKE MY POWER! IT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN SURVIVE.

This message riverberates throughout the arena and doesn't seem to be speaking to any one of you in particular. You feel the evil, thick in the air. Once again the tension begins to build. The creature you face is way too powerful, you begin to feel panic begin to set in. You also feel the power, the deadly sedictive dark energy calls to you...
OOC:
Should you wish to, one and only one of you may grasp the dark energy here. It requires your action for the turn and will certainly give your character some conflict. To complicate the issue, Evelynn is looking pretty rough. You doubt that she could withstand another blow from that creature.
What do you do?

Round 2! Fight!

Apr 6, 2019 9:52 am
Barely scratched. More annoyed than anything else.

As Ian watches Evelynn get slapped aside, wounded by the great beast. Anger wells up in him before it tamps down to a hard, cold edge. His aim shifts from the great beast, roaring and swinging its arms to the black obelisk. "Fuck off." He mutters before he lets the shot fly.
OOC:
Ian is taking the Aim maneuver twice, along with the Strain. I'm assuming the difficulty based on range, if there are no other modifiers then I'll use that Advantage to pass along a Boost to Alyx. Tell me if there are any modifiers and I'll put them in and adjust the post to fit, otherwise that's 16 damage.

With calm, purposed steps, Alyx drops the rifle on the ground. She wasn't a very good shot. The clack of her boots on the floor is drowned out by the roar of the creature and the scream of blaster bolts. Her hand dropped to her training saber for a minute but it wouldn't pierce exoskeleton that could shrug off blaster bolts.

Stopping in front of Evelynn the pixie sized girl holds a hand out to touch her older 'sister'. In this place the Light is scarce but she tries to draw on it to heal her.

Regardless of whether it works she turns to face the creature, glare up at it defiantly. Her clear, blue gaze says it all: No.
OOC:
Alyx is going to take 2 Strain to Move and then enter a Guarded Stance. If the Heal doesn't produce a Light side point it can't be used since she's healing someone else.

The blaster bolts strike the obelisk and score several holes but neither the voice nor the behemoth react.

I'm not sure if I made this clear but the voice does not appear to be coming from the behemoth. It is coming from the obelisk.

@Alyx: As you know, you cannot access the light side of the force here. However, I will let you do so if you use a destiny point.

oh sorry, I meant that "yes I will spend a destiny point if I have to" 😁 whoops
Apr 6, 2019 10:44 pm
OOC:
Okay, Taryn wants to distract the creature, draw it away from Evelynn and Alyx, probably by making a lot of noise and shooting at it, quantity over accuracy.
What do I use and what is my difficulty? Deception versus its Disciple? Ranged-Heavy? Survival even?

The aim is not dealing damage, just getting it away from Evellyn.
Apr 7, 2019 2:21 am
OOC:
To distract a predator from delivering a killing blow? That's gonna be a difficult roll. You can make the roll at difficulty 4 and add a setback die due to its bloodlust.

Evelynn reels, hitting the floor as the beast's claws rake across her and she cries out in pain. A burst of fear, anger, and hatred surge through her. But she remembers her Master's teachings, that those emotions lead towards darkness, and staggers to her feet. As she does, she pulls a stimpack from one of her belt pouches and injects herself. Almost immediately she feels the pain of the wound she received begin to recede. She can still feel it, the wound isn't gone, but the stimpack has helped.

Turning back to face the beast, her blade still held defiantly in her hand she calls out, "I will not embrace the darkness, not for you, not for this. My family is with me, and we defy you." On her last word she moves, using Alyx's guarded position nearby her to help disguise her incoming attack against the creature. Her strikes, however, seem unable to pierce through the thick hide of the beast. The movements, though ones she is used to performing, leave her wincing slightly as the barely recovered wound sends lances of pain through her.
OOC:
Between Alyx's Heal, assuming it works, and the stim, Evelynn is fully healed, for the record. I'm going to roll a lightsaber attack, not sure if I can get a boost or not, but I'll not add one, if it matters you can add one later. I'll take that Threat as strain.

Okay...
Initiative order is PC, PC, PC, PC, NPC, PC. And Ian pretty much has to go first because there's people waiting to see what happens with his action.
So I'd say it's, in order, Ian, Zeph who may or may not give Taryna boost, Taryn, Alyx, the beast, and Evellyn.
So I'll already make my post and then maybe edit in some boosts after Zeph has gone...
Taryn's mind keeps screaming at him that what he's seeing can't be real, monsters don't just crawl up out of a spotless arena floor, especially not if this seems to be a regular occurrence in this arena. Evellyn's blood seems plenty real though.

His first instinct is to get the thing away from his friend. It seems to largely ignore the pain of blaster fire. Maybe it'll find stun bolts less to its liking. He doesn't need to damage it, just annoy it enough to draw it away.
He lets fly a barrage of inaccurate shots that seems to bounce off its hide harmleslly. He blows loudly on his fingers, which reverberates though the arena, and screams at the thing.

Taryn grins as the creature turns towards him. His smiles slips as it starts to lumber towards him... 'Didn't think this through, did you?' he thinks to himself as he backs away.

[taking 1 strain from the threat, and spend a maneuver to move to medium range - should require three maneuvers to get from medium to engaged range, unles I'm mistaken.]

Could I make a Xenology check at the same time to know something about the thing? A weakness, it's origin, whatever? I'll just roll my side of it, if there's nothing to know, ignore if course.

You don't know much about the origins of the creature itself. It is clearly not sentient, possibly genetically modified but its hard to tell. A critical isn't an effect of amount of damage done. It's a function of the weapon. Weapons have "crit rating" which indicates how many Advantage you need to use to trigger a critical hit. I'm guessing, in this case, it's Crit is 3. Meaning that Zeph can spend those 3 Advantage to do a crit, which is what the d100 roll was.

Apr 8, 2019 10:53 am
OOC:
Huh, I don't recall reading that you have to wound to crit, only successfully hit. When I get home I'll check my books, because most of the crits could apply to an attack even if it fails to get through soak. Except maybe death, obviously, and most things in the 100+ range also probably... Regardless, let's press on, we have a beast to best.

You all watch as Alyx rushes to Evelynn's side, she places herself between the towering mass of muscles and death and does the unthinkable. She turns her back to the creature. As the creature strikes towards her unprotected back a feeling of serenity washes over her and she calmly places her hand on Evelynn's ruined body, the warm feeling of serenity flows into Evelynn and she whispers a single word heal.
In amazement you see that Evelynn's body manages to knit the wound back together and in a moment health returns to her body.

Time slows as the monster strikes for Alyx and split seconds before it hits the behemoth lets out a loud roar as a fullisade of blaster shots targeting its head and eyes distract the creature. It turns its attention to Taryn and bellows a challenge.

Then it charges at him and stabs him with its needle sharp tips of its crab like claws.
OOC:
Take 11 damage please Taryn.

Apr 9, 2019 1:04 am

So the real trick here is time. I'll have you make a ranged roll, difficulty determining the speed and quality of the explosive produced.

I'll let you choose the difficulty.
Apr 9, 2019 2:00 am
OOC:
Okay! I don't suppose I could get a clue as to how much damage it'll do? Because if we're talking 35+ damage then okay but if it's less than that it's really not worth it since Ian can do the same with the rifle normally in 2 rounds. Also, as a side note, please send Advantages as Boost dice to Ian@whywouldyoudothat.starwars
Apr 9, 2019 3:01 am
OOC:
I can't imagine it doing more than a thermal detonator (20 dmg) but I could definitely give it some piercing if it launches shards of blaster rifle into the creature.
Apr 9, 2019 6:01 am
As the beast turns and charges towards Taryn, Evelynn starts to wonder at this entire situation. Her vision had guided her here, the pull of the crystals had guided her here. The Force wanted her here. She just had to figure out why. Turning her back on the fight, Evelynn moves towards the obelisk and begins to inspect it, to reach out with the Force and try to feel what their purpose is here, now.
OOC:
I don't know what you want me to roll, basically I wanna check out the obelisk for any clues and, baring anything useful presenting itself there, attempt to seek guidance from the Force because Evelynn doesn't feel like conflict and combat is the answer to this puzzle.
Apr 9, 2019 1:19 pm
"Fifty creds says darth dipshit's corpse is in there or this is some goofy antenna on top'a his tomb." He says to Evelynn as she approaches. "Too bad it can dig like that or we could just leave." He looks down at the blaster rifle in his hands. "I have'a dumb idea." With a sharp frown he calls out loudly enough so that everyone in the arena can hear him. "Taryn! Hide b'hind Alyx'n heal her with stims! Alyx, I need you ta get that thing's attention an draw it -almost- ta the obelisk!" Finally he turns to the Devraonian, "Zeph! I need yer help with this rifle!"

He doesn't explain what he needs help -with- and it's a strange request to say the least considering Ian is one of the better shots in their family. But the human's voice is insistent as he takes out his handscanner again. This time turning it towards the obelisk, trying to learn more about it. Specifically where the weakest point against an explosion would be and whether or not he was right about a body being buried in it. When Zepharo approaches he says quietly, "Remember that time I wanted ta improve that droid an I was grounded fer ten days?"The look Ian gives him is insistent but Zeph hopefully remembers the protocol droid Ian was trying to turn into a droid to play blastball with whose 'life' ended explosively and definitely outside of warranty. "I need that ta happen with'a rifle."
OOC:
Edit: Ian will have moved to Engaged with the obelisk and that will be his Manuever.

Ian's looking ahead past that. Taryn should be in range to move behind Alyx and heal himself, even if he's got to take some strain this round. Because Ian's plan is for Alyx to tank the monster until we can get the bomb ready.
Apr 9, 2019 7:36 pm
OOC:
Honestly, I'm not sure any of us can really tank it at this point. It's rolling YYYG and getting a downgrade on melee attacks so it's only swinging against 1 purple instead of 2... Hits like a truck, lol.
Apr 9, 2019 8:10 pm

Yep. Base of 12 from my math. And Zeph, I asked about the roll to make the bomb. Arina asked for ranged but was vague on what difficulty besides 'making it harder improves the bomb'.
Apr 9, 2019 9:38 pm
Drawing her lightsaber and igniting it, Alyx gives Ian a sharp nod, "Right!" Turning towards the huge creature she lets out a slow breath, widening her stance. "Okay, Taryn, I'm ready! Bring it this way!" Flexing her hands on the grip of her training saber she gives the huge creature a small, grim smile, her face bathed in blue from the blade.
OOC:
Alyx is drawing her Lightsaber and using her action as a maneuver to take Guarded Stance to apply another black die to the creature's attack. If it hits her she'll use Parry to lower the damage by 3 (2+1 rank in Parry), this gives her 3 strain.
Apr 9, 2019 9:55 pm
The massive blow lifts him off his feet and sends him flying, crashing against the arena wall.

Checking himself, he seems to be more or less intact, even though breathing hurts. Ian is saying something about Alyx, he can't make out exactly what over the roaring of the creature and the pounding in his head.

He sees the Zabrak across the arena, behind the creature. Picking himself up, he dives between its legs and makes a run for it, his ribs screaming in protest.

Taryn takes a manoeuvre to disengage, and uses his action to take another one to run to medium range behind Alyx.
Apr 9, 2019 11:48 pm
OOC:
@Emsquared: I think a ranged check will do to overload the blaster safely and for maximum damage.

Difficulty 1: Takes 3 rounds 15 damage piercing 1
Difficulty 2: Takes 2 rounds 15 damage piercing 2
Difficulty 3.Takes 2.rounds 20 damage piercing 2
Difficulty 4 Takes 1 round 20 damage piercing 3

Each additional success = +1 damage.
Failure means it didn't work but doesn't mean the blaster is ruined.
Despair = Ruined blaster
How does that sound?

Zepharo looks to Ian with a steeply raised eyebrow, but he really doesn't have a better idea, so he takes the rifle and in a couple fluid motions disables the inhibitor and twists the capacitor-dial two or three times around, simultaneously edging his brother away with a swipe of his arm.

A red light begins blinking rapidly on the weapon and it's body begins to heat up, already burning in his hands. He takes it by the shoulder strap, swings it in a couple of wide arcs and spins it at the behemoth...

Apr 10, 2019 12:40 pm
Ian, you spend your turn scanning the obelisk but all you receive is:
Material: unknown
Age: Unknown
Species: Unknown sentient

Zapharo runs his dexterous fingers along the controls of this blaster rifle, increasing the power and disabling the safety features. Before the failsafe can activate he slams his knife into the electronic controls and electricity begins to crackle along the barrel. Then he chucks the improvised bomb at the behemoth and it explodes, knocking all of you to the ground.
OOC:
For my first three threats., I would like Evelynn, Alex and Zapharos to make agility check difficulty 2. On a successful check you take no damage but on a fail you will take 5 points of damage piercing 3.
The behemoth screams in pain, and you see a massive chunk of its shell and one of its claw arms is blown clean off of it. Gushes of arterial blood spray out in all directions.
OOC:
For my final two threat I am going to add an ongoing condition.

I would like everyone at short or engaged range to make an agility check every round.
Engaged = Difficulty 3
Short = Difficulty 2

Success means you manage to dodge the blood, failure means you take 2 damage, regardless of your soak value.

You will need to repeat this roll every round that you stay in the given range.

@Emsquared: Thanks for the threat.
Alyx flashes her training sabre in front of the creature's face taunting it and then she takes a guarded stance.

Taryn, moves away from the creature to medium range.
OOC:
Please make one agility check as above.
Evelynn tries to summon the force to gain some kind of insight as to how to deal with this challenge in a non-violent manner, but she doesn't feel it respond to her call.

You all get back to your feet and the beast launches an attack against Alyx but she dodges out of the way. Unfortunately, she trips on a stone as she does so, falling prone.

Apr 10, 2019 1:33 pm
OOC:
I'll allow co-ordination. For some reason I thought that was presence as in co-ordinating efforts.

Yes, 2 checks this round.

In addition, now that the creature has a gaping whole in its carapace I am going to give you a couple of options.

1. Normal attack, but you can reduce the difficulty of the die by 1 purple die.

2: add two extra difficulty dice to target the weak spot and I will give you an additional 5 dmg should you hit.

If it's alright, I'd like to redescribe it. Alyx isn't the sort to dodge when she is told to stand there and defend someone.
"Stay behind me!" Alyx calls out as the creature rushes them. The huge beast roars and slams its claw down at her. Rather than move she goes to block, pulling off a move that would only work with a training saber. She grabs the blue blade with her right hand, giving her better leverage, turning the claw away from her and Taryn. She roars back at the beast, he Zabrak heritage showing through as she drops to her knees, panting. With a groan the 157cm girl wrenches herself back to her feet and pulls her saber in front of her again, teeth bared. When the blast goes off she stands there even as the heat and pressure threaten to singe her and a single piece of debris strikes her side.
OOC:
She is going to recover and make another Guarded Stance. The blast deals 5 with piercing 3 so that's 2 damage then.

Ian's eyes go wide as Zepharo starts to swing the blast around before chucking it at the beast. "Wait, wait!" Gritting his teeth he calls out, "Bomb!" The explosion rips through the air, causing the human to cover his face with his arm. When it clears he sighs in relief to see everyone still standing, "Okay, Zeph . . . my bad but . . . killin' this thing is what this asshole -wants-. Generally speakin' y'don' wanna do what assholes want you ta do." He holds up his hands, "But good throw, man. That was'a good throw."

Breaking into a run he goes towards the rifle that Alyx had dropped earlier before moving to protect Taryn. Scooping it up he goes to snap a shot off at the creature!

Zepharo shouts triumphantly as the sabotaged weapon becomes entangled in the beasts limbs a and literally blows it apart. He had instinctively raised his arm and ducked low just as the blast went off.

As he stands straight again, he's already drawing down on the gapping wound in the thing with his blaster rifle and fires on it. Ultimately spinning away as he smells the acrid toxicity of the jetting blood...

Evelynn's back was turned towards the creature as she was attempting to investigate the obelisk and feel it with the Force. As a result, she was caught completely off-guard by the quick, savage attack from the beast and cried out as its claws raked across her back, scoring deep wounds and bringing her to her knees. Turning from the attack, she caught a glimpse of the weapon thrown by Zeph sailing through the air towards the behemoth and turned her forward fall into a roll, coming up ducking and braced against the upcoming explosion, letting most of it wash over the obelisk instead of herself.

Gritting her teeth against the pain, the Miraluka gets to her feet and retrieves her saber, though the weapon seems to be mostly useless against this behemoth's tough hide. Knowing that any attempt to find guidance from the Force will fail, Evelynn sighs as she ignites her blade and once more moves towards the creature, hoping that the weakened armor where the blast damaged the beast will give her the edge. Muscles straining, and knowing that she was likely causing whatever injury she had to worsen, she closed with the behemoth and after a few feinting flicks of her blade, struck home for the first time and felt the creature shudder as the weakened blade of the training saber struck home.
OOC:
At this point I'm not sure if it'll help, but 6 points of stun damage to the behemoth.

You see the behemoth reach out in a final act of desperation, but as it moves towards Alyx, Zapharo nails it with a series of precise shots, worthy of a storm trooper and the creature screams and drops to the ground
Its body twitches for a moment before lying still.

You hear a noise and turn to see a section of the arena wall open up into a passage leading deeper into the mountain. You hear the passage of wind scream again.
This time accompanied by the voice
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOME

Then you turn to regard Evelynn, as you see she is surrounded by a brilliant glowing green light and you are forced to close your eyes...

When you open your eyes, Evelynn is on her knees with her palms extended face up as if offering a prayer to an ancient goddess. Lying comfortably on the palm of her left hand is a single green crystal.

The empty arena still feels dark. Terrible deeds have been comitted here and you feel as though your own conflict has added to the power by adding the creature's blood, pain and death to the countless others that have met similar fates.

Still, the air is no longer manevolent. That is cause for a minor celebration...

After the green light clears up, Evelynn spends a good few moments simply staring at her hands, at the small, green crystal sitting so peacefully in her palms. It had only been a few minutes since they had entered the arena, but for Evelynn it felt like it had been days, possibly years. Even as she sat, she could feel the crystal, feel a very subtle vibration emanating from it. Not a physical vibration, but a vibration within the Force itself. As she sat, her freehand drifted downwards almost of its own accord to rest on the hilt that Master Selak had given her... Soon...

Shaking her head to clear her mind, Evelynn stood, slipping the small green crystal into one of her pouches she moved towards the others, wincing as she walked. Seeing Taryn resting to one side she joined him, wondering if it was a good idea to pop another stimpack because damn, her back hurt. Instead she said, "Well, so that happened. How is everyone?"

Responding to the call of 'medic' with a sort of fierce emptiness in her eyes, Alyx disengages her lightsaber and heads over to Taryn. Closing her eyes, she raises her hands towards him, trying to find the feeling inside her that allowed her to heal Evelynn from before. Unfortunately whether it's the evil of the place or something else, nothing happens. No miraculous healing of body and tissue takes place. Looking at her hands in confusion Alyx shakes her head, "Sorry."

Zepharo sags under the tension, and let's out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding, as the creatures falls and the adrenaline leaves him...

He slings his blaster over his shoulder and, after a quick scan and seeing that everyone is still conscious, he jogs the short distance over to the fallen behemoth and runs his hands over it's armored shell and muscles flesh... What a BEAST!

He tries to catalogue it's most salient features in his brain, he wants to know more about in later. Then looks upon it with great respect one last time before turning to Ian and his words.

"We're pursuing our destinies, yes? I can't imagine that Master Selak had any idea what we would face down here, and not have given us a warning.

But if this is a trial in the Will of the Force, we have overcome it together. With no ability to plan or prepare.

Who else has had their crystal-vision leading down here?

"I think... I think I'm supposed to find another, as well. But unless the way back opened up, we can only press forward and see what else is awaiting us. I trust in the Force, and believe that if work together we can prevail." Evelynn says quietly from where she squats next to Taryn. As the others each collect themselves following the battle, she pulls the hilt she'd received from Master Selak off her belt and begins to inspect it a little more closely, now that she was in possession of an actual kyber crystal.
OOC:
What do we know about lightsaber construction? Is this something that the Master has spoken to us about, or was it more vague and "you'll know what to do when the time comes" sort of stuff?
Apr 14, 2019 12:52 pm
OOC:
I think we know quite a bit about Lightsaber construction. I mean, we must have done something the last 12 years, and it wasn't practising our Force powers.
"Zeph's right... If we can't even deal with this damn cave, what business do we have even wanting to get off planet? But if you really think Selak doesn't know what's down here, I have some beach front property on Hoth to sell you."

Taryn gets up and walks towards the frescos. "Next trial is water, looks like, then fire, and then we get to meet the big, bad bozo that set this all up. Anyway, I suggest we climb up into the stands, rest for a couple of hours before we move on, maybe eat a bit..."

As I understand it, the process of constructing a lightsabre is a bonding experience between a padawan and their master and quite an intimate and personal experience. I don't see it as a simple weapon making experience. As such, you might know a little about it but you definitely do not know how to build a lightsabre.
Apr 15, 2019 3:01 am
Going forwards, the path back to the surface is an open one as is the path leading deeper into the mountain. Evelynn and Taryn both feel a pull to continue.

If you wish to leave now of course you may but I will be giving you a serious amount of conflict for recognising a dark presence and not trying to put an end to it.
Apr 15, 2019 5:24 am
OOC:
Just for my take on things, it's more bonding with the crystal that makes up the heart of the saber that's a personal connection between the Force user, the crystal, and the Force itself. The construction of the actual lightsaber, from there, is relatively simple. It's more attuning yourself harmoniously with the crystal and the Force that helps provide that little extra oomph. A Padawan's Master is more tangentially involved in the process as it's a wholly personal experience, generally speaking. At least, that's how I've always interpreted it.
"I hate relying on stims to keep going, but unless one of you picked up a bit of know how about medicine, I'm gonna take one of these. I think a short break is called for, give us a chance to get some food, but I'm going to press on. Sure, this wasn't easy, but neither will it be easy to be one of the last Jedi in the galaxy with all those dark forces that our Master foresaw arrayed before us. If we can't even get through this, what have the last 12 years been for? I'm not giving up now just because I got a few cuts and scratches..." Evelynn says, fiery determination filling her voice as she goes on. Clipping the hilt back to her belt, she once again slips the crystal back into a secure pocket and pulls out one of the field rations they'd brought with them before sitting down to eat it. All the while conscious of the lingering itch of whatever darkside presence infested these caves tickling the back of her mind.

OOC:
I know of only two Lightsaber constructions in canon, and that would be Luke's green one, which didn't involve a master, and that arc from Clone Wars where a bunch of Younglings got their crystals and made their sabers, and that also didn't involve a master, just droid supervision.

Also, we all have fully functional Lightsabers that just need the training emiter mod switched out for a proper crystal, which wouldn't even require a roll. Strictly speaking, we don't have to build one.

How complete Evellyn's super-duper hilt is is up for grabs, of course.

OOC:
I'm not running a dictatorship here people. If that's the way you want to play it then that's fine by me :)
Apr 15, 2019 11:37 am
OOC:
Technically speaking it's just the Superior Hilt Personalization, I believe. Which is also technically just an attach that requires no skill roll to add onto a hilt. I've been RPing it at something more complicated than that to have it be a little more personal to her. Like it's a functional hilt, minus the crystal, with the Superior Hilt Personalization attachment already installed in it. But, yeah, adding a crystal to a hilt is a check that doesn't even take a roll. Attuning to a crystal is a different thing.

If you have it, Arina, or have access to it, the Sentinel book (Endless Vigil) has expanded rules for lightsaber construction in them, which are kinda cool if you're into that and work well with what's in the F&D mainbook on page 194/194. It would require a workbench type setup, so not something that's done in the field like we are, but once we get back to "base". In fact, some of the Jedi ships during the Clone Wars and earlier eras had lightsaber construction/modification facilities built into the ships.

Alyx sits on the ground shaking, but seems to have little to say of value. She feels cold, and can't help but wonder why Master had them living above this toxic, evil site. How is this possible? Why did the Force make them face such evil?

She pulls her knees up and wraps her arms around them. Master has a lot to explain, she figures. "Hey Ian," she asks quietly, "if these crystals were hidden in these dark and twisted places, does that mean they are tainted by the dark side?"

You make your way down a narrow tunnel which spirals down for a short while, say five minutes or so. You notice a strong water motif amongst the carvings on the walls of the tunnel. There are no pictures per se, just characters, sigils and designs.

After a short while, the tunnel opens up into a massive chamber. On the opposite side of the room you see two large pipes and a closed stone door. A tiny section of the door is glowing with an etherial green light. The floor seems to have been made out of a solid stone grate. As the last of you enter the room the door closes behind you and water begins to poor from the pipes, filling the room.

Zapharo, just before the door closed you turn around and catch a glimpse of what appears to be a pair of glowing red eyes on a smokey body, before the image fades through the door and is gone.

As she's eating Evelynn takes another stim and injects herself, feeling the rush of pain killers and other medicine as well as the odd sensation of the bacta helping to rapidly stitch together her wounds, on the surface at least. Enough to let her carry on. Pulling out her crystal she reaches her feelings towards it before turning to face Alyx and Ian and shakes her head speaking up as she slips the crystal back into the secure pouch, "I can sense no evil, no malevolence coming from it. Just comforting warmth and a sense of belonging. Perhaps our retrieval of them helps to purge whatever dark energies may have gathered around this area from it."

Once everyone is finished eating, she leads the way down into the new passage, glancing around the new room as her siblings file into it. She spins rapidly when the doors slam closed behind them and the water begins pumping into the room. Reaching down to her belt she grabs her rebreather and pulls it out, saying, "Quickly, everyone who has a breather, put it on. Those who don't, stay close to someone who does and pass them back and forth as needed. I think we need to make our way across the room, let's move."

True to her words, she slips the breather into her mouth and reaches out for the closest of her siblings who doesn't appear to have one, holding tight to their arm as she begins moving through the room.

@Zapharo: as you follow Evelynn, you notice that she doesn't take a direct route across the chamber. Instead she stops for no aparent reason, turns and walks in a different direction. You are puzzled by this until...

Blam! A blaster bolt shot bt Ian does not travel very far at all. After about 5 meters, it strikes something invisible to your eyes, and you see a burn mark hanging out of thin air. There is obviously something there but you can't see it. Slowly, the scorch marks begin to fade.

Evelynn, already negotiating her way through the maze of walls, jumps in shock as Ian blasts the wall nearby. Turning back to the others she pulls the breather from her mouth at their shocked expressions and says, "What the hell was that about, Ian? It's a wall, I don't think shooting it will help... Wait, can you guys not see... Oh. Sorry, should have said something, I didn't realize you guys couldn't see them. Yeah, it's like a maze in here. Walls, floor to ceiling. Like I said, if you don't have a breather, pair up with someone who does. Do shared breathing, take a few breaths, hold your breath, then pass it to your partner. The air supplies won't last long, but I have a feeling we have to get to that glow. Come on, let's move."

Taking the cord from Zeph, she slips it through a loop on her utility belt and continues to lead the way through the winding maze, doing her best to feel the right path.

Alyx helps tie both herself and Ian to the rope as quickly as she can. Being so short, she starts to float and has to tread water as she works. "Ok, Ian," she says, muffled by the rebreather. "Let me know if I can do anything else to help," she adds, but the strained tone seems to indicate she is either doubtful about her usefulness, or stressed about the situation... Perhaps both.

Hey everyone. Just letting you all know that I haven't ghosted you or anything. I'm just a tad busy with work at the moment. Things should quiten down before the end of the week

OOC:
Terribly sorry about the delay everyone.
You all make your way deeper into the maze. It is very dark but the green light on the opposite side of the room is clearly your goal. The water climbs its way up the roof slowly but steadily. It is easy to make progress at first. But as the water level rises, it starts to bog you all down and you're certain that eventually, it will cover the entire room.
OOC:
How are you going to attempt to cross the room? I would like you all to make a check. You can choose the kind of check within reason. So if you wish to navigate the maze you can roll survival. If you wish to power your way through it roll athletics. If you wish to co-ordinate the teams efforts roll leadership etc.
Apr 30, 2019 2:08 am
Zepharo is not a strong swimmer, and certainly not a leader, he figures the best way in which he can contribute is to just use his wits to try to puzzle through the thing, by maintaining a situational awareness and focus on the big picture of just making out out alive.
OOC:
Survival. Difficulty?

EDIT: In a real maze, all you can see is what is immediately around you, which I would say would be harder - more disorienting - than being able to always see your goal and better tell where any given path is taking you.

IMO, solving mazes isn't about the walls, it's about understanding where you are, and methodology, rolling Diff...

As you have no way of seeing the invisible walls lets say difficulty 4.
Apr 30, 2019 6:39 am
As the waters continue to rise, Evelynn feels a brief surge of panic start to overwhelm her as she wends her way through the convoluted maze, guiding the others as best she can by example. However, as the water rises up over her chin and begins to cover her mouth, she remembers that she has some advantages in this situation: her vision isn't based on light-sensitive sight, she can feel the walls surrounding them, she had remembered to pack a rebreather and with her sibilngs near her she knows that they can pass them around as needed, and lastly she knows that the Force has guided her here. This is where her destiny lays. Disciplining her mind against the fear, she continues to press forward, following her perception of the maze and makes her way towards the glowing green light.
OOC:
I'm going to make both a Discipline check and a Perception check and I'll let you decide which one I can use. Discipline is her mastering her fear to calmly and efficiently move through the passages she can sense. Perception would be simply her feeling her way with her sight through the maze. You can let me know which you'd prefer I use and the difficulty. Also gonna negotiate with you for a boost die on the Discipline check due to reasons stated in RP post, being prepared and being able to sense the walls etc.

Welcome back...

Can I have a bit more sensory feedback on my last post?
Apr 30, 2019 11:52 am
OOC:
I think Average difficult sounds fair. Sure, the water is rising/has risen over her head, but she has a rebreather, she can still see. For her it's more controlling that initial spike of the fear of drowning that everyone has. I'll roll 2 dice, if you feel it warrants a 3rd or a black setback die you can add it in.
Apr 30, 2019 1:03 pm
Despite Ian's paranoia about the situation earlier the water rising seems to almost calm him. Maybe it's the direct threat to survival instead of ghosts, maybe it's having a problem he's actually equipped to do something about. Either way, Ian follows along with the others, starring at the handheld scanner for as long as he can to memorize the best path ahead, all the while breathing deeply. Then, as the water gets to his waist he puts the scanner in one of the waterproof pouches of his backpack before acting.

Instead of blindly pushing through, the human reaches out to grab at the invisible walls, keeping the map in his head, he attempts to use their corners and surfaces to help push him through the maze faster than he could walk. However, when the reaches his chest he looks back at Alyx, who is probably already underwater with a worried frown.
OOC:
I will take that Threat as strain.
As he starts to lose track of his memory of the scanner image he looks around. They are underwater, hampered by invisible walls and darkness. At first they could see the water cut by the edges of those barriers, but now, with the water all the way up, they have nothing. Some air escapes his mouth as he eases the pressure on his lungs a bit before his indigo eyes open in surprise. Reaching down to his belt he draws his training saber and holds the emitter end to one of the invisible walls. The ignition sound is muffled, of course, but instead of a blade, the wall lights up, in fact, all of them do, with a ghostly green glow. The walls are not transparent, otherwise his blaster shot from before would still be visible: therefore, they bent light, focused it and changed it. The walls were kyber crystal, harnessed through the force to pull and focus light in a network, because otherwise each wall would distort the ones behind it.
OOC:
Magic crystals. I'm pretty sure that's how science works.

I think I will have Alyx roll athletics since it's her highest skill
Alyx has been keeping as calm as she can while the water rises up, but even with the bouyancy it provides, her head is under water before long. She dog paddles for a while, but takes a few breaks where she just allows herself to sink and the water to flow over her completely, utilizing the fact that she has a rebreather and knowledge of how to swim to keep her emotions under control and serene.

@Carabas: Sorry. That one slipped through.
The wall feels wet to the touch but when you look at your hand it is perfectly dry. You can feel the scorch marks where the blaster rifle clearly damaged the wall. The floor is now covered in water, so finding anything would be very difficult.

Given that we're all connected by the Fo- eh, Zeph's rope, we maybe should work out what order we're in?
(taking Threats as Strain...)
Taryn mutters in frustration as the crystal fragments keep slipping through his fingers and getting washed away by the incoming water.

He has to abandon the task as the rope connecting them starts to run out.

The water doesn't really bother him that much though, benefit of spending a lot of time with Zafe growing up.

The sudden green glare makes him shield his eyes for a moment. Some kind of... Kyber? Damn lucky that blaster shot didn't blow the cave sky high. But it's not in crystallised form. Must have different properties like this. Does that even exist? Makes some kind of sense though. Kyber crystals are supposed to be invisible until they 'choose their owner' or whatever.

"Look, we're still attached to each other. We can't get lost when we have each other. Eve and Ian can find us a path, and the rest of us can just relax, and follow them."

Now that Ian has made the wall visible the maze is a less daunting challenge.
OOC:
Everyone may recover 1 strain.
You navigat about half the distance to your goal when the green glowing walls change to a deep crimson colour.

You listen as the sound of grinding stone becomes louder and louder and you feel a current begin to form. It gets stronger and stronger and seems to be trying to push you back towards the starting area.
OOC:
Flip Destiny token mwah ha ha.
OOC:
Please make an athletics check difficulty 2 please everyone but don't narrate your success or failure. I will take care of that this time. You may definitely think about and write you think may have caused this current or how this change effects youe character's emotional state.

Just when Ian holds out a hand towards Alyx, motioning for the rebreather she has the current rises up, starting to push them back towards the entrance. Gripping onto the wall, Ian does his best to hold on, though the rest of the air in his lungs bubbles out in the process. Whatever panic migh normally be caused by a life or death situation hardness into a cold, emotionless focus that while not expressly angry or panicked couldn't be labeled as calm by any means.

Zepharo grits his teeth, being tied together would no doubt make this new development more challenging, they'd need to act as one more than ever...

He begins swimming in a free-form stroke, shouting out direction as much as he can on breaths. And as he does so, he draws on a source of strength from deep inside, whether he knows it or not...

Alyx chokes at the sight of Ian being completely submerged, and uses the rope lashed between them to quickly pull her to him. Taking a deep breath, she holds it and removes her rebreather, trying to put it onto Ian. She touches him and desperately tries to grasp the invisible thread between them, that thing that let her always know when he was close, and whether he was feeling brave or just faking it-

As gently as she can, she helps him put the rebreather on, trying to focus on the familiar sense of him within her mind. Ian, you'll be ok. We'll all be ok. I'm here.

Evelynn was just beginning to feel confident, despite being completely under water as she moved forward. Reaching what she gauged as roughly the half-way mark, she turned to glance back at the others and see if anyone nearby was in need of her breather, when the light suffusing the room shifted from green to red. Before she even had a chance to brace herself, the current hit her from where she led the group and she felt powerless to fight against it.

'Ah, this was going suspiciously easy' he thought to himself. The current wasn't worryingly strong yet, but that could change quickly.

Maybe he could use the climbing gear he brought to anchor the group...

A bit of surprise come over Ian's face as Alyx swims over and plants her rebreather on his face. His long hair is swept around by the rising current but the mask finds its purchase. Gripping it to try and force it over his mouth he takes a breath before reaching out to try and grab hold of the zabrak girl. He's still holding the training saber into the walls to help everyone see, even as he attempts to reach out to snag her and keep her close. Instinctively he mentally reaches out as well, unable to understand her thoughts as language but sending a sense of determination, strength and trust back to her.
