was that in the away thread? i still havent read it. Ive been fighting it so i am totally surprised by any info the away team brings back. Im doing my damn hardest to resist.
Can you explain why you feel the need to do that? Aren't you more likely to be able to RP appropriate things if you have the backstory already in your head?
I'm reminded of a story I once read about Dustin Hoffman preparing for the scene in "Marathon Man" where his character is tortured by Laurence Olivier's character. Hoffman's a Method actor, so he spent a couple of days not sleeping, doing various unpleasant things to make himself look gaunt and anguished and broken. Olivier supposedly said, "Good God, man. Wouldn't it be easier to simply
act?"Thats exactly part of it. Its part of my method within TTRPG's. Sure, it would be easier to react and understand what happens over there if i am reading it, but to Marbo, that information is not accessable. Marbo cant open his third eye and see into the pirate vessel and keep tabs on Zephyr and whomever is with him, so if i dont read that, it keeps me in the characters perspective, and i cant unconciously influence my decisions on the Potential by something that Robb knows, but Marbo doesnt.
As a theater kid too, method acting seems to work best for me. Sure i can just "act", but when i did my monologue project (which was EAP's The Raven") I practised by candlelight at night. I put a metronome on my computer that sounded like someone tapping on a door with every beat. I even accidentally ended up sleep depriving myself (due to work, school, and theater, and dance), and i felt like when i delivered the poem, I understood the narrators position. Nearly mad due to a lack of sleep and constant tapping in the darkness of night.
And i guess i look at my characters in RPG's as acting. So i gotta play the part well
Holy crap that turned into a lot of text. Long story short: Its part of the method to keep myself in character. Deny any knowledge that marbo wouldnt have to prevent subconciously effecting my decisions as him, and follow the marbo method; Walk everywhere at work at a faster than regular pace, keep my posture straight, and when i sit to type, hear the mordin solus voice in my head. Except now its a mix of Mordin Solus and James Earl Jones.
Have you ever wanted to hear Saruman read poe? He has a whole damn series of it.
