We lost Carabas, which puts us at 7. That should be completely fine.

I also got rid of the 'note' function in the prequel thread, so everyone can now see what was posted to the others. Too much of a hassle at this point, but if/when the team splits up to investigate different things, I'll use at that point.

Changed my mind :). I think it'll be too cumbersome having one broad, open forum at first, since there will be multiple mini-plots going on simultaneously.

Hey all,

We're going to be adding another player here shortly - username Knight - will probably be shortly after the team comes together.

Hi everybody, I'll be playing Jimmy Serrano, an associate of Jackson Elias from the wrong side of the law. He was a poor kid who grew up in the Bronx and was tangentially involved in the rackets; more recently he's been doing work helping Elias and other collectors "acquire" things from owners who don't really want to sell them.

I'd like to try to link in my background with some of the other characters - is this the thread to work that out in? Or is it happening somewhere else?

Rolls

Rolling for Luck (result x5) - (3d6)

(641) = 11

Sure, go ahead and do so here.

Is there a way to see other people's characters and backgrounds? I know somebody is playing a PI and somebody is playing an investigative reporter. I think those would be the easiest to link to, but I don't know any more detail than that, or who is playing those characters. I looked under the game, and it lists players and character names only

If anybody has a character that they think would be a good link to me, let me know. Thanks!

PS: If that stuff is in the private thread, let me know and I'll leave it alone for the meantime.

Welcome!

It indeed seems the option to see each other backstories has disappeared. (I used to be able to see other character sheets, at least if they were saved to the public library, but not any more.)

Anyway, here's my character's backstory:

To say that Caleb Murphy was unlucky would be an understatement. The number of times something unexpected upset his carefully laid plans was just too much. When he is investigating leads for his next newspaper story, witnesses will get cold feet at the last minute, papers get inexplicably lost, or his car breaks down if he needs to get somewhere in time. With so much bad luck, some might even say that Caleb is cursed...

The combination of this bad luck and his inquisitive mind has brought him into contact with the occult and the esoteric more than once, and this has caused Caleb to develop a bizarre combination of fascination and apprehension for these matters.

There have been times where all of this has caused Caleb to slide into a mild state of depression and lethargy, during which he's prone to reach for the bottle. Luckily, every time he seems to have been able to eventually find some sort of inner strength to crawl away from the gaping abyss, at least for now....

BTW, Knight, just to give some context:

* Pastiche (Caleb) has uncovered some evidence related to Jackson Elias and is currently enroute to find him
* Aldrusian (Akila) is at a conference hoping to see Jackson speak
* the others are grouped together researching a topic Jackson Elias has informed them of

All are going to be railroaded to the same location :), so let me know how you would like to enter.

Akila is an Antiquarian. Akila was born in Cairo to parents who were academics. His father was a professor of Engineering who had a long term love affair with the pyramids. His mother was the head librarian at Cairo University. His father's interest in ancient Eqyptian history rubbed off on Akila but his passion was far broader than the engineering of the pyramids. He delved into the roots and development of the language and the written forms. He studied deeply all of the Egyptian art forms especially sculpture. Although his parents were financially well off, he preferred not to make use of his parents' largesse. He would rather make his success on his own.

He was a very good student and received preferred placement at Cairo University when he matriculated primary school. Following his father's passion he followed a course of ancient egyptian studies and graduated with honors. Wanting to spread his knowledge as widely as possible, he sought an advanced degree at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He taught his professors as much as he learned from them. He regaled them with stories from his travels with his father through the great pyramids of Egypt.

Immediately upon securing his master's degree he was sponsored for a position at Brown in the Egyptology School by those same professors. He had been teaching there for 5 years when he went to New York for an Egyptology Conference where he was scheduled to make a presentation.

How about this: Elias contacted Jimmy and told him that he was back in town, and asked him to come to meet at his hotel. He didn't give any details, but he did mention he was looking into a place right here in New York, and might need some work done. Jimmy just happens to get to the hotel at the same time as the others as a matter of dramatic convenience. Just bring me in when the others get there.

Hmm... is he local to NY? If you are cool with it, maybe saying that some of his bad luck has been Jimmy has stealing papers/intimidating witnesses to kill stories in the past? Would any of his stories been about the NY underworld?

Not sure about this one, it seems a bit antagonistic, and it's not much of a connection unless Caleb has some way of knowing about it.
Jun 6, 2019 6:36 am
It's certainly plausible that we've met. However, as you said, being an active antagonist is perhaps a bit too much. How about Jimmy has been feeding information to Caleb from time to time. Whether or not that information was entirely accurate is a whole other matter.

That makes more sense. He wouldn't rat out the gangs, but he might give some info on the big-time occult collectors whose collections he's been into, what kind of stuff they have, names of books, that sort of thing.

Nice! I don't think we've met directly, but I might of heard your name through Elias.
Jun 6, 2019 6:16 pm
That seems likely. Akila spoke with Elias briefly after Akila's presentation earlier that evening but he never mentioned anything about meeting someone else.
Jun 7, 2019 7:10 pm
Knight, you're up in the main game, as is everyone else. Just need a few responses so we can group up.
Jul 15, 2019 12:04 am
Thanks for the invite. Before I roll, and because my phone is about to die, how does this sound for background.

Dan Jackson. Ex-cop from NYC. His older brother was an Egyptologist who came home from three years in Egypt a shell of his former self. He won't talk about what happened, so Dan is going to sign on with a group as hired muscle to see if he can figure out what happened to his brother, and maybe a way to improve his health.

Luck roll

Rolls

Times 5 - (3D6)

(411) = 6

Character submitted. Couldn't find out how to roll for additional education. He is 25.
I used the standard array method. He is Ex-cop so I used the police officer template.
He is big and strong and can use most weapons. Not overly handsome or smart...but what are you gonna do.

Let me know if I am missing anything
Jul 15, 2019 7:15 pm
Looks good. Go ahead and choose an avatar, if you don't mind. Also, the group's in NY and is very quickly going to come into contact with the NYPD...if you'd like, you can remain a member of the force and the decide to leave and follow once you see the connections with Egyptian expeditions. Might make things easier so there's a smooth and fast introduction and we don't have to shoehorn you in...
