ALASTRIONA, BUTLER, AND PRINCE
A strong sea breeze buffers today's heat, which makes the journey back easier. Wynne thanks Alastriona for her company. "It was a pleasure to meet such a remarkable person. Sir Everdawn will be sleeping right now, but come nightfall he will be continuing his search for a necromancer that has been raising the dead within the City of the Dead's limits. So far, the vile monster has eluded his detection, and I'm sure he would appreciate your help - and your friends if you can bring them."

Alastriona returns home around the same time that Prince and Butler do. The three of you find Vatra waiting on a pair of dowdy old wizards with precise prounciation.

"Ah, do come in! We were just explaining the rules and regulations of the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors! Are any of you casters of spells, weavers of The Weave? We are here to inform you that by Waterdhavian law, you are required to register with the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors so that we may call upon your services in times of need, and so that you might call upon ours. We will need all the names of all spellcasters who call this their home."

When you get a chance, you check in on the goblins and see that they have some looted nearby clothesline and are parading about in clothes, dresses and hats and overalls that are twice their size. They are having a great time of it, laughing heartily. The clothesline is hanging out the window, flapping in the wind, with a puffy-sleeved white shirt acting like a kite in the breeze.

Alastriona gives the wizards an odd look, but she does not bother with any pause in her stride as she brushes past them.

To the goblins, Alastriona does not stop their play of the catwalk and allows them their fun. However, when it seems as though they are about to tire of their game, Alastriona directs them to wash the clothes and return them to the line.

In the meantime, she waits for Xelia to return.

As the man is talking Butler makes a point of yawning before turning to Prince and Vatra and saying "Give me a shout when the others get back" before he follows Alastriona out of the room.

Stitches strokes the bottom of his beak and makes the sounds of coins again to show he is considering the offer. He stares at the image of the tattooed man for a while. If Mirt allows it, he will fold it up and take it. If not, he will make a copy to keep. When Xelia is done with Mirt, he settles in for the rest of the opera, again listening carefully to every note.

When it is over, he suggests they head back to the manor to meet the others, where he repeats Mirt's offers verbatim for the rest to hear. He also includes the bit about their home once being a front for a hag. The news about Durnan's history with the manor interests him, too.

The two dowdy wizards march off in a huff, making a bit of noise about being disregarded.

"But it's the law! The law I say, Rupert!"

The party regroups in short order and lays the details of the various offers on the table.

Offer Summary: (Money is for party, not per player)

The Zhentarim Offer
* 300gp up front
* 100gp per show
* Access to Zhent resources
* Must represent Zhents in a good light, do positive PR
* Exclusive deal - can't work for others
* Work towards helping the Zhents win the Grand Game
* Work towards winning the Zhent power struggle in favour of Davil Starsong's side

The Harper Offer
* Work for the betterment of the city, keeping the Zhents and Xanathar Guilds off-balance and limiting their war
* Discounted resources at Harper-friendly vendors, access to magic items
* Loan from Mirt tied to offer: Mirt becomes co-owner (1/7), pays all renos (1000gp), gets 50% of profits. Terms still negotiable.

The Grey Hands Offer
* Membership in the prestigious Grey Hands organization and their resources
* Leads for tracking down the Mindflayer

What do your characters think about these choices?

Alastriona patiently listens to the others speak. When others look at her for opinion, she points to the pin on Xelia's blouse, points to Xelia, and gives the thumbs-up sign.

The aasimar then touches her own nose, takes her grey shawl and wraps it around her hand, before touching it to her sternum.

"The Zhents' offer is tempting, but the exclusivity clause is a deal-breaker for me, and I'm sure you'll all agree. I'm intrigued by the Harpers offer but mainly because of the side deal with this Mirt fellow." Prince doesn't say anything, and he's thinking about Bonnie as well.

Butler thinks for a little while before answering "I'm in the same frame of mind about the Zhent's - too many strings attached for my liking. Are the Harpers and Grey Hands offers mutually exclusive or can we take both?"

The party retires for the evening, with a clear direction chosen. Rats or bats or something worse have nested in the building somewhere and their scritching claws are active all through the night.

In the morning, they meet Mirt in his own magnificent mansion carriage. A full breakfast is served, and you get down to business. Prince lets him know that he is no fool, and Mirt is impressed with Prince's swagger.

"Ha! Had you taken my first offer, I would've taken you for idiots or thieves! Now I know you're serious. The fifty percent in perpetuity is too steep."

He outlines a new plan:

* He takes 1/4 of the tavern's profits until his 1000gp is paid back. Then his share goes to an equal 1/7th profits.
* Should the property be sold before his 1000gp is paid back, he is entitled to the remaining amount owed to him from the sale of the property.
* Should the party members die, or leave Waterdeep for more than five years, 100% ownership transfers to Mirt.
* If Mirt dies (and he chuckles at that thought), he bequeaths his portion of the tavern to the surviving members.
* Money will transferred today for Tally to get started on the repairs immediately.

"Do we have an agreement?" He thrusts his palm out to shake on it.

OOC:
Feel free to respond to the offer at your leisure. Regardless, he lets the matter rest and gets down to harper business
"Onto other matters!" he roars.

He hands each of you a Harper Pin.

"Welcome to the family! So here's your first mission. Yesterday I told you that the Zhentarim are meeting with a 'former' Red Wizard tonight. He goes by the name 'Metoth Ankhalab' and runs a gang of four thugs. Probably want his services We want you to scuttle the deal." He pauses for dramatic effect. [b]"You could murder the bastard, and the world would be better for it, but technically he hasn't broken any laws (yet) and that'll get the Zhents nerves up even higher. Better if you can make the deal fall apart somehow. Rumour has it he won't work for The Xanathar, so at that point, we're hoping he'll pack bags and move on down the Sword Coast. You catch my drift?"

AT THE MANOR
Alastriona assigns the goblins the task of ridding the manor of any rats or bats.

As the party gets ready to meet with Mirt, Alastriona excuses herself and points to the direction of the Blackstaff Tower. She intends to visit the Blackstaff and inquire about the Grey Hands.

The goblins both fear and love their Dirge Mother and therefore obey (at least while she's watching).

Alastriona (and anyone else who wishes to join her) makes her way to the Blackstaff Tower, the temperature of the city still bearable in the morning. The journey though the North Ward and Castle Ward is clean and orderly. Eventually she finds the famed tower which rests at the foot of Mount Waterdeep. It is made from a smooth black stone and surrounded by a 20-foot high wall. It has few windows and only appears three stories tall.

At the gate, the guards seem to know who Alastriona is, or at least know she's welcomed. Two middle-aged humans escort her into the tower, which turns out to be vastly larger on the inside than the outside, although still made of the same black rock. You notice your breath is visible in the tower's frosty air. Vaulted ceilings, ebon statues, and strange apparatuses abound.

The guards escort her up twelve floors the tower and eventually bring her to great oak door. The guards knock curtly, and the door swings open of its own accord. Within you find Vajra Safahr, the High Wizard of Waterdeep speaking with another Vajra Safahr in a small, ornate sitting room. A fire roars in a hearth, keeping the cold at bay.

One of the Vajras takes its leave without even so much as acknowledging Alastriona. The remaining Vajra turns to the Aasimar and weaves a spell.

"Sit. Tea?" she speaks in Celestial.

Stitches watches forlornly as Alastriona leaves to go talk to the wizard, but he perks up after Mirt arrives. After conferring quietly with the others, he grasps the big man's outstretched hand to accept the deal for the tavern.

His eyes grow wide again as Mirt hands out the pins, and he takes extras for anyone not present. After polishing his own with his cloak, he fastens it to the inside of a vest pocket, hidden away from view but still accessible. Listening carefully as Mirt lays out the mission, he whistles audibly at the mention of a Red Wizard, though his fingers twitch a bit.

After thinking for a moment, Stitches pulls a dagger, a bit of string, the ring of keys, and an arrow from his pockets and pack and lays them out on the table. With a wave of his hand, he motions to the paltry pile of gear before looking up at Mirt and replying in the man's own voice. "There are a fair number of places you flash your pin to get a good discount. Potions, gear, etc. As well as access to Remalia's armoury on an as-needed basis." For emphasis, he repeats "on an as-needed basis," then motions to the assembled party to indicate this is one of those times.

BLACKSTAFF TOWER
Alastriona waves away the tea, but does take the indicated seat. She stares at Vajra, narrowing her eyes a bit as the spell takes effect.

"What do you know of the tentacled human?" she asks, straight-forward in her desire to get down to business.

MIRT'S CARRIAGE
"A fine toolset for this mission. I imagine you'll need your sharp wit more than a sharp knife to pull this one off." However, Mirt reveals some sources that harper agents can draw upon:

* Common and uncommon potions and scrolls available at 25% discount (off of PHB price), honoured by Rishaal the Page-Turner at Book Wyrm’s Treasures and Fala Lefaliir at Corellon’s Crown, both conveniently located in Trollskull Alley.
* Uncommon magic items may be offered for each mission, may also be requested.
* A harper rescue team may be dispatched for you if you are in imminent danger.
* Access to secrets and other useful bits of information.
* Access to Harper safehouses upon request.

He hands over a pair of stones carved with weird faces to Stitches and shows how they are used "Useful things in a pinch. Saved my hide more than a few times. They are called 'Sending Stones.'"
[ +- ] Sending Stones
Mirt gives you a few more details on the mission.

* Metoth Ankhalab is staying with his gang in a third-floor apartment (room #227) that overlooks the City of the Dead. On the ground floor of the building is a tavern called "The Dead Phoenix" where the meeting is supposed to take place after night falls.
* The goal is to sour relations between the Zhents and Metoth to make sure they do not form an alliance.
* Metoth tends to stay in his apartment during day, and his four gang members come and go at all hours.
* The apartment to the left of Metoth's has recently been vacated.
* All apartments have fire escape access to a tight alley behind the building.

"Mind Flayer," Vajra corrects.

Vajra fetches an ornate wooden bowl from a shelf. She draws forth a silver strand from her forehead, places it in the bowl, and presents it to Alastriona. Should she look into the bowl, she will learn the following facts Mind Flayers instantaneously.
[ +- ] Mind Flayer
"This Mind Flayer is called Nihiloor and has been working with The Xanathar. We do not know what its plans are, but we do know it has used Intellect Devourers to infiltrate the power structures of the city, even our own organization. No amount of scrying magic has revealed his location to us."

She summons an illusion of a man before you.
[ +- ] Illusion image of Meloon Wardragon
"This is Meloon Wardragon. He was an honoured member of Force Grey for seven years. The city owes him many debts for his service. He has been retired from active service for a year now, but recently he has been acting strangely. We suspect he has come under the influence of Nihiloor."

"This is where you come in. Meloon has befriended members of your own team, especially the fire genasi Vatra. Use this connection to get to Meloon. Meloon leads us to Nihiloor, then we kill Nihiloor."

BLACKSTAFF TOWER
Alastriona tears her vision away from the bowl, closing her eyes and tilting her head to the side as if willing away a headache. "I do not understand," she says as she reopens her eyes to look upon Vajra. "If Wardragon was once a member of your Force, why do you not speak to him yourselves?"

BLACKSTAFF TOWER
"For one, he avoids us and possesses anti-scrying magic. That won't stop us for long, but forcing a meeting has not worked well in other instances. When we cornered a harvested Watchhand, it suspected it had been found out and destroyed itself. If Wardragon has been harvested, we want to observe him without alerting him. Wardragon seems to like young adventuring teams, especially yours. So, we are asking you and your team to fall into his trap and see what he reveals."
Jun 4, 2019 4:19 am
BLACKSTAFF TOWER
"So you ask me to only observe?" says Alastriona. "I can accomplish that much, I suppose; Wardragon oft visits The Yawning Portal and will not be difficult to find. If he is already familiar with those I accompany, so much the easier. However, I cannot abide a lie to Vatra about my purpose, and the omission of this intent is just as deceptive."
