OOC:
Everyone gets 5 lines of xp from the last session, bringing the total to 8. Remember that lines of experience sort of need some type of subtext and that it should be related to actions you completed. For instance, Ellis's control of the security guard, Fiona's use of telekinetic prowless, Ariel's swift dart in martial-arts attack, Logan's defensive use of his power, etc. You can bring these lines of experience up at any point you feel that your previous experience should allow you a +n modifier for a similar action. At 10 xp you can raise the action number of a power.

Given that nobody was significantly hurt during the weekend's events, you are each expected to attend your classes per usual starting Monday morning. The first class is not quite a class per se as much as it is a homeroom, a thirty minute block in which you are able to waken up fully, have candid discussion with a teacher over a wide variety of topics, or perhaps evaluate some thoughtful quote or mind-twister to start the day off with provocative insights.

Usually, Wesley leads homeroom. He's here, sitting at the desk with his glasses so low on his nose while reading the periodicals that they seem like they might slip off. But this morning, two others wait for you, Eugenie Clairmont who leans back against the desk at a relaxed stand, and beside a younger girl, somewhere in her teens. She has dark skin, with kinked hair a shade lighter, and stunning honeyed eyes which are kept downcast to her own shoes, nervously.

Eugenie greets each of you with a professional smile and waits until you're all seated before she addresses the group as a whole, "We have a new member to add to our happy little family. I would like to introduce you to Liberty Pierce. She'll be moving in later this week, but has chosen to join us today to get to know everyone."

Spencer is up and ready for classes uncharacteristically early. You attribute this to him sleeping all weekend. His appetite is similarly disposed, as you enter the kitchen area, most of you realize over the course of your time there that he has probably eaten the equivalent of all of you put together. He is still chewing as he enters the classroom, and you're pretty sure he has some food stashed on him. Presented with any expectant looks, he will offer you a piece of bacon or a waffle, but you hesitate, wondering what else has been in the pocket of his varsity jacket… of which you know he has several.

He smiles at the new girl on his way in, catches his scowling mother off-guard by leaning over and giving her a peck on the cheek, and then, as he walks by Dr. Pryce’s desk, an apple appears on it and he gives Dr. Pryce double finger guns as he walks backward to his desk at the back of the class, bookless.

Spencer rises from his seat after the introduction: "Liberty! Cool name! I'm Spencer, Spence if you want! This is us! There's Logan, the tall one; Arthur... not so tall, I'm the blond one, Ellis is the quiet one, Fee is the pretty one, Ariel is also pretty, but you're more likely to remember her wings... There's a test later, were you paying attention? As long as you're a mutant, you'll probably fit in just fine here!" To the rest of you this is curious, as at this point in his statement, he usually emphasizes how much he's NOT a mutant. "Pardon me, Ms. Clairemont... dangerous mutant."

Arthur gets up in the morning about 6am and will find a quiet spot to pray. Normally, he would take his bible and meditate over some passage of scripture, but he doesn't carry one anymore. When he's in a spot to be alone, he'll take off the glove on his right hand. A Celtic cross adorns the center of the back of hand, along with what appears to be a Catholic rosary. He starts at one of the rosary and begins morning prayers. I have no idea if you can hear me, or even want to anymore... and he spends about 30 minutes. After that, shower and head down to breakfast.

Not used to the wide array of things to eat for breakfast, he settles for some eggs, bacon and a muffin. He's eating an apple as he comes into the homeroom, immediately eyeing the new face in the room.

"And you are... a new mutant? student? A new member of.. Spencer, what did we decide to call ourselves again? Alpha Flight or something?... Anyway, I'm Arthur.. pleased to meet you." After the greeting, he'll walk past Wesley's desk, and swipe the apple from the table, if he can get away with it. With or without the apple, he'll head towards the back as well, next to Spencer.

Logan wakes up and gets dressed like usual. Quickly heading to the kitchen, Logan manages to grab a couple waffles and a handful of bacon before the hurricane that us Spencer makes it all disappear.

With nothing better to do, Logan heads to class and as he enters the room he notices the new girl. Smiling and giving a polite nod, Logan takes his seat.

Once everyone is in and Spencer gives his welcome speech, Logan can't help, but to bust out a quick laugh. Smiling at the new girl Logan casually says "you must forgive our goid friend Spencer, he's unusually chipper this morning." crossing his eyes at Spencer, Logan settles down for the class.
May 15, 2019 2:07 am
"Nice to meet you, Liberty," Ariel says politely, then conspiratorially stage-whispers, "Pay no attention to Spencer. 'Pretty' seems to be the only way he can think of to describe girls, but it's okay for you to also have a personality. We'll teach him some more adjectives eventually."

Giving Spencer a wink, she takes her seat for class.
May 15, 2019 3:43 am
Ellis gives an awkward half-smile as he follows Spencer into the classroom and sits. He was getting used to it just being Logan, Arthur, Fee, Ariel and him. He's skeptical about someone else getting added into the mix, even if its someone their age.

As is often the case when he meets new people since he started at the Academy, he lets his mind wander, perhaps a little haphazardly and invasively, into that of this new girl.
OOC:
I'm going to put 3 stones towards getting a surface read, although if Ellis finds something interesting he's going to push further. If he finds something scary or mentally painful to him he's going to drop the connection immediately.

"My bad, Ariel. Never mind what I said then, guys, Ariel has a personality. Beautiful is also in my vocabulary; fine, lovely, pleasing; enticing may give the wrong connotation or overtone, but there's also stunning, angelic, or conversely bewitching or if you'd rather and older word, maybe resplendent, refined, or even statuesque? I personally like pulchritudinous, but I'm afraid not many girls would take it as a compliment nowadays! There's a sudden pause, and he's nodding and smiling expectantly like he's made a joke and he's waiting for you to laugh, but gets crickets instead. His smile fades, he curls his lips under his teeth and he turns, shaken and wide-eyed toward the window. You can see he's trying to be subtle about his hand moving from his pocket to his mouth.

Fee is sitting in the front row when everyone else arrives. Now that she's "home" at the school, she's back to her comfortable style of dress, showing off her light green skin like she can't do in public. She smiles and waves at everyone as they come in. She's been keeping to herself mostly since their outing, mostly out of embarrassment for overreacting the way she did. She really wishes she had a little better control over her emotions.

When Spencer passes by, he mouths a message to her that makes her smile and nod.

She greets the new student along with everyone else. "You have the coolest name. Welcome to the Academy. It'll be nice to have another girl around."

Fee laughs when Ariel takes a jab at Spencer, and giggles at his human thesaurus routine. She collects herself quickly. The last thing she needs is to come across as some sort of giddy school girl with a crush, especially when that's probably exactly what she is...
May 15, 2019 4:08 am
"Mhm, mhm," Ariel nods along, a little sarcastically but also unable to help being surprised and a little impressed by Spencer's vocabulary. "Anything in your thesaurus of a brain that's not related to physical appearance?"
May 15, 2019 4:36 am
Spencer smacks his lips, and finishes chewing... "Sure Ariel, how about snide, derogatory, sarcastic, vituperative... shrewish?" He claps a hand over his mouth, wide-eyed, and looks away again, this time he seems determined to keep himself quiet by stuffing his face with food. At this point you're not even sure where he's keeping it all, or putting it, never mind where the words are coming from.

May 15, 2019 5:07 am
"Contrite, compunctious, sorrowful, apologetic... sorry?" Spencer hides his face in his crossed arms on the desk, like he's fighting it, but can't stop. You can't tell if he's laughing or crying, but he's quivering and making periodic whimpering noises.

Fiona turns to look back over her shoulder at Spencer, an expression of concern on her face. She looks at Ariel, offers a weak smile, then looks back at Ellis. She tries to get his attention, flashing him the what's going on with Spencer? look he must be used to getting from everyone by now.
May 15, 2019 3:47 pm
"To be fair, I started at pretty, but..."

His first few words are muffled as Spencer's head rises from the desk. He looks like he was about to say more, but then thinks better of it. He turns to Liberty instead:

"Liberty, if it doesn't offend you I think you're pretty, also, but you're going to have to balance your own judgement now, because apparently all girls are judged the same in my eyes. Unfortunately, in order to correct this philosophocally and restore my credibility, I would have to supply a contradictory judgement, and call someone ugly, in particular, to someone I haven't already called pretty, so as to not contradict myself. This is not something I'm willing to do, especially in your case, and I'm saving Ellis as a scape goat for other things, so take it for what it is." He smiles, putting an arm around Ellis and pats him on the shoulder jokingly.

"Welcome to the debate club Liberty..."
Spencer pushes back his sleeve to read a watch that's not there...
" ...or is it time for drama club already?"

Logan randomly pulls put a quarter from his pocket and begins to roll it along his fingers. As a smile slowly forms on his face, he concentrates on the quarter.

To anyone watching, the quarter seems to melt, yet it doesn't burn Logan. Acting with a mind of its own, the small bit of liquid metal sways around and begins total shape. Soon a small metal figurine of a knight solidifies in Logan's hand.

Smiling Logan hands it to Liberty "You'll have no problem fitting in."

Mrs. Clairemont patiently waits for the students to do a brief amount of chatter, and over the general sound of that, Wesley gently terns pages to his newspaper, minding his own business. Anyone paying close attention can see the headline has something to do with ReNew details, and general tips for parents regarding their young teens. He reaches at one point for the apple that Spencer had left for him on the table, only to find that when he makes the gripping motion, he grabs onto nothing but air. His brows knit and he stops reading for a second to search the table, and even goes so far as to look beneath to see if it merely rolled away.

He looks positively distressed about it.

Meanwhile.

Liberty smiles demurely at the amount of attention. One hand goes to her hair and pulls it down along the side of her neck to twist a clump around her finger. The occasional furtive glance is given to Logan before quickly pulling back to the rest of them. The banter between Ariel and Spencer seems to amuse her, and so she tells them with a wry laugh, "Well I think all of you are pretty... And I think I'm like you guys." Her smile flickers with the lack of self confidence evident there. She looks to the headmistress for a moment as though to ask silently if things are being done right. "Just with the teensiest bit cooler last name," she motions the gauge of what 'teensy' means with her forefinger and thumb.

She stays oddly quiet, the same type of quiet one maintains when they're uncertain of where they might stand in a potential group dynamic. Her eyes settle on the melting of the quarter, watching it with her hands fidgeting in front of herself until she's questioned more directly by Ariel. "I'm from upstate. I was apart of the volleyball and basketball team at my old school. I had a pretty normal life before, I think. Me, mom and my sis'. I'm really into sports. I guess that's how.. whatever happened with me, happened. I was trying to spike a ball over the net when another girl rammed herself into me. Well. She was going to anyways. She went right through me," her eyebrows raise for emphasis. "She ended up falling on the court. Everyone started gagging and I was mostly just confused. Someone had to tell me what happened."

The clump of hair is allowed to snap away from her twisting finger. "It still just sounds kinda' crazy..."

Mrs. Clairemont places a hand on Liberty's shoulder briefly. "First Alpha," she smirks to the classroom, "why don't the rest of you mention what your first experience was?"

Logan sits there listening to Liberty tell her story. Stealing a quick glance at her when he can, Logan hoped Liberty liked the small metal statue. ...hopefully she really was looking over at me and I didn't make an idiot of myself. Hopefully giving her the little statue wasn't to weird either. While I'm at it, lets hope she doesn't look over and catch me looking like an idiot as I talk to myself.

As Mrs. Claremont suggests talking about their first change, Logan can feel his cheeks turn a little red. "I'll go first if it's okay. For my first change, I was with a few friends and we were LARPing, or Roleplaying in costumes and such. Well, I was standing there getting ready to slay the undead menace...so to speak, when instead of wearing aluminum foil wrapped around cardboard and holding a fake sword, I was wrapped in real armor and swinging the real thing."

Logan paused as he tried not to smile. "I never saw my friends run that fast before. In a matter of seconds I was alone in the woods. The real problems didn't happen until I got home. It turns out one of my so called friends told his parents and the typical domino effect happened. My friends were to scared to have anything to do with me. My parents hung around me long enough to send me to my Uncle's..it was for my safety they said. Their loss in my opinion...my uncle taught history at the nearby college, so for some odd reason he thought it was great, we both poured over books and studied up on medieval times and stuff. It was actually his idea to for me to enroll here. He paid what needed to be paid...and here I am."
May 17, 2019 10:31 pm
"I hurt someone," Fee says, once Logan is done, her skin fading from green to a sickly grey-green. She stares down at her now grey hands clasped in front of her and picks at one thumbnail with the other. "It was an accident. I pushed him. I couldn't stop."

Fee takes a deep breath and lets it out in a loud sigh, then looks up, her face and all expose skin flushing back to a faded green as she flashes a forced smile. "But, all's well that ends well, right?"
May 18, 2019 2:35 am
In the awkward silence that follows Fee's story, Arthur looks around. "I accidentally caused a book to explode. I didn't mean to, it just happened. My parents wouldn't have any of it, and through some pretty crappy stuff, I ended up here."
May 18, 2019 7:32 am
"I, uh... I grew wings. Just little bumps at first, the girls used to tease me about them in the changing rooms, but that was okay. Then the lumps got bigger, and my mum started to worry. She started taking me to doctors, then a surgeon. 'Masses', they called them, said I should get them removed. A couple of nights before I was meant to go in for surgery, they... I don't know, hatched? It didn't hurt or anything, it was just super itchy and then all of a sudden I had four of these sort of floppy, damp ribbon things trailing down my back. Super gross, right? But then they dried out, and it was like... oh my god, this is what I'm meant to look like, you know? I'd been looking in mirrors for years and no matter what, I never looked like me."

"So yeah, anyway, mum freaked. Took me to the hospital, they said everything seemed fine, totally healthy, just... y'know. We talked, she wanted me to stick with the surgery plan, said it would help me have a normal life. But when it got to the day, and I thought about them cutting off my wings, I... I just couldn't. They were trying to prep me for surgery, and I panicked, and BAM, just like that, I was back in bed at home, still in my hospital gown. I had no idea what had happened."

"Mum was in a real state by the time she got home, but once I'd managed to explain how I felt, I think she understood. She tries to, anyway."
May 18, 2019 9:15 pm
Mrs. Clairemont has no doubt heard these stories before, most likely in the application screening process and so she listens with a professional deference once could expect. Mr. Wesley pays only a half-hearted amount of attention, because he is getting maddeningly more frustrated with applegate. It was there, and then it wasn't. He glances up, however, when hears the loud crunch of someone else taking a bite of apple, and he gives Arthur a look. A very piercing look. A very teacher-like look. The type of look that causes his glasses to slip down the bridge of his nose as he tries to look down the length of his nostrils toward the boy, and in that moment, Mr. Wyndam-Pryce has never seemed more stuffingly British.

Liberty, however, listens with almost a thirst to ask more questions a troubled, congested expression. She occasionally whispers out to each, "I'm so sorry," while wringing her hands together in front of her stomach. She asks, almost hesitantly after Ariel finishes her story, "... Would it be alright if I asked if I could see them.. unfurled? Stretched?" She asks, very wide-eyed--

"--After class." Mrs. Clairemont interrupts. "Liberty, take your seat." She skips over Spencer and Ellis. After all, Ellis has a particular way of communicating. And Spencer... Well. Perhaps she skipped over him with purpose.

"I'm here to talk to you about Saturday. What happened was tragic. Utterly tragic. As you might have heard, the people responsible were..." It's her turn to squeeze her hands together, though the movement is controlled, and concise, as though she were molding her thoughts together between her palms, "under the influence of a particular street drug. We've done what we could to keep mention of your efforts out of the media; however..." She pauses and makes a, 'What can you do,' type shrug. "As of such I feel it in our best interest to suspend further planned outings until otherwise mentioned... if there is something you need, we can have it delivered. Any questions?"
May 19, 2019 12:59 am
Logan sits there listening to Mrs. Clairemont speak about their little outing. "So....you're saying because we used our gifts to help people, and stop the gunmen, we are not allowed to go out in public? We were careful to keep our identities secret. We..did..the right thing."
May 19, 2019 1:25 am
Arthur sets down his apple. "Wait a tic... Logan's right. We did the right thing, used our abilities to help others, and we're getting punished for it? He slumps back into his chair. "This is utter nonsense. It's starting to seem less like we are students here, but rather prisoners or guinea pigs."
May 19, 2019 2:55 am
Ariel looks downcast, almost guilty. "It's me and Fee that's the problem, isn't it? The boys are fine, they all look human. They can walk around in public and nobody would ever know they were different. And you're trying to be fair, and not single us out - if we have to hide away, then everybody has to hide, right?"

She fixes Mrs Clairemont with a sudden, angry glare. "But that fairness isn't fair. It just means that the two of us are responsible for everyone being miserable, and that's a horrible feeling. Don't put that on us."
May 19, 2019 3:14 am
"Ariel’s right. It’s not fair to everybody else." Fiona nods her head, her skin fading to grey again. "Besides, I’m used to hiding indoors."

Spencer still has his head down on the desk, but when the word 'suspend' comes up and he shoots to attention. Spencer lines up his thoughts and opens his mouth to speak, and then Logan pipes up... by the time Logan is done, Spencer looks a little deflated, like Logan has just said what he was about to, he raises his finger as if he has another idea, but then Arthur breaks in and seems to take his other ideas, and starts to look a little disheveled. He lights up with another idea, then looks a little ashamed when Ariel says her piece. By the time Fee says her few words in support of Ariel, Spencer is steamed up, but instead of showing anger, a sly grin creeps onto his face, and his eyes narrow so tight there's only enough of a slit for the daggers to fly at his mother:

"It's okay Ms. Clairemont, we can still have unplanned outings, right guys?"

Mrs. Clairemont stands there for a hot second, blinking at her students as though they weren't talking back to her, although it could also equally be argued that she's simply being polite and letting them make their complaints known. She turns around to glance at Wesley, whom promptly glanced toward the closed door to the classroom to avoid direct eye contact. As he began palming his own mouth to hide to hide half of his face, she turned back to the students with an expression that quietly asked of all of them: have you all lost your tiny little minds?

"This is not a punishment."

She reaches behind to snatch Wesley's newspaper right from underneath him, and then unfolds it large enough that she can point to a picture of Logan that's been plastered in a widespread on page 6. The picture is of him in mid-form, metal wrapping around him from behind, moments before he leaped to the first floor in the mall, from an angle of someone who'd been on the floor and behind. The headline reads in bold TEENAGE MUTANT TEENS?

She keeps the spread displayed as if she were reading them a picture book. "You looked quite dapper on Saturday, wouldn't you agree, Mr. Henry?" and then she tosses the papers carelessly over her shoulder at Wesley, whom fails to catch the fluttering mess. "This is for your safety. Get down your knees and pray to God tonight that the security footage for the mall was scrambled, and that this is the only picture. Privacy is the only thing that keeps those walls out there effective in keeping people who would want to hurt you to continue minding their own business. If people recognize you, they will harass you." Of course, she doesn't know that it is Ellis that deserves the credit.

There is a slight sigh when Ariel and Olivia speak up, a sigh that is more indicative of a deep thought rather than frustration. "If I am going to be completely truthful with you, yes. Your physical abnormalities play a great part into keeping the whole of you secure."

At Spencer's pointed statement, she looks at him with a gaze that is hot, intense, and dominating. She speaks firmly so that everyone will be able to hear her succinctly, "Unauthorized outings are not permitted at this time, and there are very real consequences for taking it upon yourself to think that you know better."

"I see your point Mrs. Clairemont. From the newspaper photo, it definitely shows that..I..need to stay here. Yet, I still stand by my point. Why punish the others when I'm the only one that got..caught?"

Logan turns to look at his fellow students, with a quick almost shy glance at Liberty, he speaks. "I'm sorry everyone, I should have found a better place to armor up. I didn't mean to get caught and, in turn, get us all...grounded. If it helps make everything okay, I'll give everyone a great deal on an autograph."

Logan turns back in his seat and meets Mrs. Clairemont's stare. He sits up straight in his chair, with a rather large, cat aye the canary grin, on his face.

"So just so we're clear, except for those of us under your strict legal guardianship..." He points his two thumbs toward himself. "What now allows you to inflict such limitations per se, upon the constitutional rights of the remainder of the school populace, and given the same citation of rights, further limit or supplant our rights were we to disobey further? ...The news outlet coverage poses no threat or association with the school, and no consequence to its continued function. Furthermore, given the gravity of any of these possibilities, why were we not briefed specifically upon the limitations of our activity and the consequences thereof before we left on said outing during which the "incident" occurred, which we did not incite? This clearly goes beyond the edicts presented in code of conduct of the school... In short, Ms. Clairemont, I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the notion that all this is not YOUR FAULT! I refuse to be penalized because you were FRIGHTENED! I'm willing to bet, had no one in this room revealed it to you directly, you wouldn't have learned about it until this morning, or statistically speaking, not at all. It's 6 pages in, there's only a small demographic who will get that far into the paper. Spencer looks smugly pleased with himself. "Is that your first time in the paper, Logan? I think I do want an autograph! Will you sign my butt?" Spencer's usual goofy smile returns, and you feel thankful you're not at the wrong end of his ridicule.

Ellis is ignores the bickering between Ms. Clairemont and the others, only a slight twinge of annoyance registering that they're stuck on the grounds for now. No camera for him for now.

Instead he focuses harder on Liberty, annoyed that he can't get anything. She seems so... curious. Suspiciously so to Ellis. He puts his head down on the desk, resting the side of his face on his arms, making himself physically small as possible as he reaches his mind out larger to see if he can get something more...

It is Mr. Wyndham-Pryce that answers Arthur's question: "Mrs. Clairemont, the boy does have a religious right to an ordained minister and at the very least a dedicated area for prayer, it would technically be ill-"

But she's not listening to him and quickly slams her hand on the desk behind herself to indicate that it really isn't the best time to badger her. At Spencer, her eyes become hot like white coals, narrowing on him with a non-blinking intensity. Half-way through his diatribe she cuts in, speaking over top of him and louder until she is the dominant voice. "Brief you? Brief you. How. How was I supposed to know, or even foresee that an event like this would happen. I have been straight with you since the very beginning, with all of you, and I'm sorry it's hard and bitter pill to swallow, but at some point your fragile little sensibilities are going to need sharpen up, and you're going to have to learn that things are not always apart of some grandiose scheme. It's a hard, cold truth, but sometimes life itself is terribly unfair. And the sad truth is, Mr. Henry, is that even if you hadn't been seen, this may have very well been the outcome given recent events in the city, regardless if this outing had happened or not."

Her nostrils flare as she inhales and her jaw quivers for a second before she continues, this time seemingly more directly at Spencer, "I am so tired of your constant bickering, your insinuations, your blatant disregard for everything I do. I've worked myself to the bone to create a safe space, to appeal to donors for funding, for grants! I feel a greater sense of responsibility for everything that happens to each of you, more than you can possibly imagine. You have the luxury to sit back, to make snide comments, to pretend I don't care or that I lack some type of heart. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know when it comes to media organizations and how things tend to get spun. Wesley, SIT DOWN, I am not finished talking."

Behind her, Dr. Wyndham-Pryce makes the faintest of stutters in the most awkward half-stand, something about this sort of display not being appropriate.

And she promptly ignores him to finish what she has to say to Spencer. "It might make you feel better to think of me as some sort of hideous monster steeped in the most vile of villainy. I hope it does. I would of course prefer it if you just simply thanked me, and let me do my job. Either way, I don't care. I will no longer tolerate this type of disrespect.

Spencer stands in defiance at the first few of his mother’s words, and seems like he wants to continue arguing, but can’t seem to get a word in. He begins to listen, and as he does you see him start to deflate, he sits, and uncomfortably weathers his mother’s words, but doesn’t turn away or try to hide. His jaw quivers, and he presses his lips together as her tirade continues, and continues to shrivel. By the time she’s done, he is hunched over, eyes at the floor… so still you’re not sure he’s breathing, his usual familiar smile and amiable attitude has disappeared. You’re not sure if he’s embarrassed, ashamed, or beaten; maybe all three. His hair falls in front of his eyes and it's hard to see his expression, but you're pretty sure he's not willing to continue this argument.

Anyone who approaches Spencer gets a quivering outstretched hand gently keeping them away, and he walks through the back of the room in a long route around his mother to the door and disappears out of the classroom.

Fee watches Spencer leave, her instincts telling her to chase after him, her pride and fear of Mrs. Clairemont keeping her firmly planted in her seat.

Her eyes dart from Spencer's retreating form to Ellis, then to Ariel. This place was beginning to feel like home, but not in a good way. Fighting and arguments, disagreements hinging on the use of mutant powers... yep. Just like home.

Fee decided to keep quiet. She stared down at her hands clasped on the desk and focused her attention on her slate grey fingers.

Arthur sits defeated. ...had a chance to... start anew... but it looks like that's over.

While seated he does have a thought. He stands up... What if we refuse? What if I don't want to be a prisoner here anymore? Here is my demand: I require the opportunity to attend mass, to have a sense of normalcy... Part of why were are here is to learn about our abilities, but to also be a part of society. If you can't guarantee that we get that sense of normalcy, that chance to be a part and not closed off from the world, then I conscientiously object to using my powers while I am inside these walls, and consider actions to vacate this place.

I don't mind that you're studying me and what I can do. I do mind that you try to control me. If I wanted that level of control, I'd go back home.

Ellis seems distracted, and embarrassed. His thoughts are a jumble as he watches Spencer walk out.

The group isn't really connected. Although Ellis' mind is darting around the room he's not really focused on connecting everyone. His mind seems elsewhere.

Ariel tries to choose her words carefully. "Mrs Clairemont, you talk about us having the luxury of not knowing and not caring what you do, but I think that's part of the problem. You're keeping so much from us, and asking us to trust that it's in our interest to do so, but that just means we're left with so many questions we can't answer. What are we doing here? What's the real purpose of this school? Who's funding it, and what do they expect for their money? Why are there so many areas of the school we can't go? What rights do we still have? And if we wanted to leave, would you try to stop us?"

She sighs. "I really appreciate what you've done for us, giving us a safe space where we can use our abilities, but we don't know why, and that's scary! You say you've been straight with us all along, but you haven't really told us anything - all we have are our own crazy theories. You need to stop keeping us in the dark - we're mutants, we know first-hand that it's a scary world out there. That's why we expect the worst! Even from you."
May 23, 2019 11:22 am
She doesn't even try to stop Spencer from leaving. She only watches him balefully until he exits, and then her expression softens.

It's Wesley's turn to shine! He finishes standing up and tugs the front of his blazer forward with both hands to give it a stiffer appearance around the collar. "It shouldn't be a problem to take the boy to mass. It would be directly impeding on his constitutional rights as a citizen, as we do not have a proper place of worship or agreement with a pastor to make visits, here, at the school. There are night masses, I am told. In the main urban area of the city, of course, but it would be night and we could take a windowless van."

He continues to triumphantly press when Mrs. Clairemont's only response is to shut her eyes tightly as though she's beginning to feel the start of a headache, "I think the key thing that was left out, that has been overlooked, is that this is a temporary measure. To wait for things to blow over. Keep your noses to your books and you'll find that things have calmed enough for outings to resume again, as planned. Like to the zoo," he tries to suggest cheerfully as he adjusts the weight of his spectacles.

Mrs. Clairemont responds with careworn apathy, "Yes, the zoo," and then raises her chin to listen attentively to Ariel as she speaks up. Tentatively, she picks her words while inspecting her own fingernails for cleanliness, "I hear your request for more transparency. To some extent, I agree, I could be more forthcoming and encourage an air of openness. This school is founded on noble intentions for a brighter future for a vulnerable minority, but there is a pied piper of sorts. As far as each of you are concerned, you are a test group. The 'real'," she uses air quotes, "purpose being to study the early effects of mutantism on the psychological profile of young people and to develop effective learning programs so that they remain upstanding citizens, one way or another. This is part of the reason why it is so important to us that we maintain all the comforts of home, here. We are partnered with other research groups in multiple states.

"But my personal convictions for this program are so strong that I wanted my own son to be apart of it. It is why your curriculum has an abnormal amount of philosophical courses as compared to the average high school coursework which contains... None. We hope to distill within each of you a strong personal code of greater responsibility for yourself, what you're capable of, justice, honor... Jedi virtues? I guess you could say we're training each of you to be jedi knights in a sense."

"As for why I've called for a stop to outings... Paranoia spiked recently. There's a street drug that induces physical changes. It's being passed to children." She makes a tight, uncomfortable smile. "And it's making them act crazy. But if there's a mutant charging at you and acting aggressively, it doesn't quite make it to the normal civilian's mind that this person has had their mind melted by some drug or another. All they see is a dangerous mutant, and it makes them think that maybe that's what all mutants become, eventually dangerous."

She inhales deeply before finishing her monologue quietly, "It's why I'd rather have you, and Olivia stay here until whomever is circulating this drug is caught and it stops becoming tabloid fodder. But it seems unfair to single you both out, when you are all a team."

Arthur has an odd thought. "Ms. Clairemont, you know my background and my... history... with the law. Could it not be a prudent thought to find out more about this drug from... say... a thief's perspective? Already anticipating a 'no', he continues on. "I saw what those thieves tried to accomplish and I'm pretty sure I can find them. Why not send me to find them and get a few samples for you to study? Or, if we want to take a far nobler route, I get information on their, forgive the term, lair, and make an anonymous phone call to the authorities?" He makes a brief smirk.

"Plus, I'm good at causing a distraction."

Fiona finds herself uncomfortable with the current subject. When criminals wanted to hurt innocents, she was able to stop them. It made her feel good, but more importantly, she had felt powerful. She liked feeling powerful. She wasn't sure if that was what she was supposed to feel. It sounded like they wanted her to be a good guy, and good guys didn't use their powers because they liked the feeling of power over others, they used them to help the innocent.

But experience had taught Fiona that unless she was the most powerful, someone else would hurt her or those for whom she cared. She liked being here, among her peers, with others who at least understood how it felt to be so different. But she also liked the feeling of beating those idiots in the mall. She wanted to do it again.

She didn't think she was a "jedi", as Mrs. Clairemont said. In fact, she was pretty sure that the part she liked best was closer to the "dark side." Did that make her a bad person? Was she destined to turn to the dark side like Darth Vader? She was staring at nothing and paying no attention to the others in the room as her thoughts took her on a journey of her own.
May 24, 2019 4:46 pm
Spencer appears in the doorway, looking confused and his eyes are glazed over a bit.

"Ms. Clairemont... Mum? (you're not sure you have ever heard him address her this way) you say we have the luxury of not knowing what you do, but there's just so many questions, and then you pop this on us. I don't know what to think anymore.

When I said "brief us", I meant for you to tell us your expectations, not foretell the future. You have Dr. Pryce for that*."
He grins as if it's an inside joke. "If you've taken sponsors and grants to support the school, you have to report results. Could you just tell us what you need, and maybe we can just give it to you, rather than having to monitor us 24/7, and try to measure us without us knowing?"

He points to the CCTV cam, and few other places around the room that look innocuous, but now look suspicious to you.

"I do appreciate what you've done, but I don't get why, so I'm hesitant to cooperate. You may have been straight with us, but we're not your business partners or sponsors or legal entities at arms length, we're neck deep in... whatever this is... with you. You say you have your 'strong personal convictions', but we don't, and don't know yours either... maybe we don't need the luxury of not knowing. Maybe we need to partner with you for the right reasons, your reasons, knowing the consequences of our success or failure, the REAL consequences, the consequences YOU'RE dealing with. Our "team", those are your words, could have a goal other than to butt heads with you. We're not children, and you want to make us into responsible adult citizens, so can you experiment with treating us that way?"

His voice trails off, despondent. His eyes cross momentarily, and presses one of his hands to his brow, one of his eyes squinting, blinking away pain, maybe.

I don't even know why I'm here! These guys all have awesome powers... I got a prodigious nose bleed and slept through the weekend, if I'm a mutant, I'd say it's pretty disappointing."

Spencer wavers a bit, leaning on the door frame, and suddenly his nose is gushing bright red blood! His legs fail as he slides down the door frame to a sitting position and slumps forward and face down on the floor, catching his head on one arm. It's more as if he fell asleep quickly rather than fainting or falling unconscious.

Arthur, still standing from his proposal to Ms. Clairemont, rushes over to Spencer and helps him up. You okay, man?
May 25, 2019 12:46 am
OOC:
Arthur, it is. You can level up the AN of a skill by gaining 10 xp points. Everyone here has 8! So far, your social skills are working 100% on Wesley (he lacks any, or any reason to object). And your AN is just high enough to have Eugenie consider the proposal with out rejecting it outright. I'm not too worried about how many stones are placed into things outside of structured play, because the system is such that regeneration in safe places can just be infinite. It matters more for when it comes to puzzle solving, and skill walls, where certain characters are just not capable of overcoming something due to their current AN.
Wesley remains oddly quiet, looking at Arthur with... interest, and occasionally shifting eyes back toward the Headmistress...

Whom is smirking right back at Arthur. "I'll make you a deal. I'll make you all a deal. You want to be a little detective-spy, do you? Then you'll read Plato's Alcibiades I and II, and pass an oral exam. If each of you, and I do mean each of you as whole, a collective... Yes, even Liberty, then I might consider that as a team you are mature enough to voluntarily make an investigation effort of your own. How does that sound."

The word 'mum' almost startles her. Forget the rest of the children, when had she, herself, last heard Spencer use that word? And when did he even enter the room again. For a moment she tries to regard him as a teacher but as he keeps speaking, a hint of warmth takes her that could be confused with vulnerability. ... And increasing uncertainty the more he reveals about the conversation that he really shouldn't have been able to have heard. When she'd been responding to Arthur and Ariel, the door was closed!

She doesn't quite have a chance to begin to respond to him, at least, not before she notices the nosebleed. She's too late to catch him from slinking to the floor--not against high schoolers while she's in stilettos--but she crowds him along with the others whom presumably also will get up to check on him. "One of you, grab him by the other shoulder," she instructs, her voice wavering. "We need to get him back to the infirmary. Wesley, I think a long weekend is in order. Cancel classes for the day."

Liberty doesn't rush over. She's barely pulled out of shooting Ellis a wounded, and angry expression! She stands up partially and then just sort of awkwardly stays near her desk... Nearly all of that went over her head, more or less.
May 25, 2019 1:22 am
While everyone is focused on getting Spencer some medical attention, Ariel moves over to talk to Liberty. "I promise it's not always like this," she says, then with a weak laugh, "Some days nothing mad happens at all. Um, how about we get you settled in? I'll show you where the dorms are."
May 25, 2019 3:49 am
Arthur will help Spencer back to the infirmary with whomever wishes to help. After Spencer is taken care, Arthur does something quite unlike himself.

He heads back to his bed and finds the Plato book and begins to read. I have the skills necessary to find them, maybe even... neutralize? is that the right word? eliminate? NO.. that's definitely not the right word. I can stop them. Who knows? Maybe they heard of Puck's crew back in Atlanta. I still have some credibility there... Well, if Puck would let me back into the group... Stop thinking about that, Arthur David James... you need to study for this exam or you won't have a shot at it... Or at least an easy shot at it...

He'll spend most of the day reading, trying to understand what might be on an exam and jotting notes.

Fiona rushes to Spencers' side as he collapses, tears in her eyes. What is happening to him? Why does he keep passing out? Please, God, don't let anything happen to him. Her skin changes color again, but not in its' normal way. Usually it moves through the color spectrum - grey to green to blue to violet to red, but now her skin seems to be mostly violet with patches of grey fading in and out of existence.

Once in the infirmary, Fee remains by his side. She doesn't know what else to do. She feels useless, helpless, and the combination frustrates her, settling her complexion to a light grey. She is desperate to communicate with him. They still haven't had a chance to talk about anything, and her feelings are a jumbled, confused mess. Before she is forced out by Mrs. Clairemont or whatever medical staff will eventually make her leave, she leans over and whispers into Spencers' ear.

Eventually she wanders back to the dorms, trying not to let her worry show. She smiles, puts on a happy face, and helps Liberty get situated, offering to share anything she has that Liberty might have forgotten. She really does want to make friends here, but her mind keeps returning to Spencer.

Liberty nods solemnly with Ariel while making a nervous, dry-mouthed swallow. "Yeah, I still need to unpack. Is that guy's super-power really fainting and getting nose-bleeds?" As Ariel leads her up to the dorms, she makes casual talk about normal, mundane things.

The rest of the day passes by quietly. Eventually, Spencer is discharged from the infirmary once he's woken up again.

After Arthur goes and alerts everyone, Liberty pulls herself away from unpacking with the other girls with an, "Already?"

The common room seems prepared for everyone already. Credit perhaps to Arthur or it's simply how it was arranged the last time everyone sat down in the room to play games together. Liberty takes a seat to herself and waits for the others to arrive, and for Arthur to get Spencer to wake up.

Fee accompanies Liberty to the common room and sits near her, but with empty seats on either side of her in the hopes that Spencer will take one of them. She seems nervous, a little jittery, but her skin color is green to blue, which by now everyone has figured out means she's feeling pretty good. She smiles as her friends enter behind her.

Logan nods his head as he hears Arthur. Getting up from the chair he was sitting in, Logan moves into the common room. Looking around and seeing that a couple of the others were already there, Logan takes a seat beside Liberty. Glancing over L9gan asks a simple question. "How are you settling in?"

Arthur is the last to enter, except for Ellis, he takes the remote for the TV and places it in the middle of the coffee stand the chairs in the room are placed around.

Almost immediately, the TV flickers on, there's a brief flash of snow (no signal). Then, flipping through scenes like channels on the television, it looks like the individual positions watched by the CCTV cameras... After a few quick switches, it settles on Spencer in a split-screen feed of the one camera in the infirmary. On both sides, Spencer is lying down on the infirmary bed. Captions begin to scroll across the bottom of the TV. "Can you guys keep a secret? I'm a mutant like you, but with less 'demonstrable' powers. I didn't know I had them until the mall. I wanted to show you first, so it doesn't appear like just nosebleeds and stuff... the best way I can think to explain is that my brain has been 'upgrading'... Just watch."

Two titles appear above the split-screen feeds on the TV, on the left is titled Real, on the right Recorded.

On the left, Spencer gets up out of the infirmary bed and walks out of the infirmary, while the right side shows him still lying down. As he walks into the hall, the TV display changes to the hallway downstairs, the left side shows Spencer walking through the hall, the right shows the empty hallway, occasionally cycling back to the infirmary, where Spencer continues to lie quietly. He gets in the elevator, there's a camera in there pointing down from the ceiling, again the left shows Spencer in the elevator whistling to the elevator music, the right side an empty elevator. You hear the elevator ding its arrival on the 2nd floor, and Spencer walks out and sits in the empty seat between Fee and Ariel on the armrest. The camera feed shows the group of you on both sides, nearly the same, with Spencer is missing on the right side, then switches back to him sleeping in the infirmary.

The captions scroll up again: "Don't freak out, this is what makes me want to keep this a secret!"

The screen changes again, to what looks like scrolling files. Mugshot photos of the group they encountered at the mall, files on a drug called ReNew and what looks like police reports on the mall incident, and ongoing investigations noting how high school students are being hired by an organization after being hooked on ReNew. There's also mention of the 6th suspect who got away, and reports of how they can shapeshift and pose as other people.

Spencer sighs heavily and the captions read: "Lame, right? Just slightly better than nose bleeds and fainting?" As the TV shuts off again, Spencer clears his throat but sits silent, and leans over to Fee.

Arthur looks back at the window. I mentioned briefly earlier about my... past. Frankly put, I'm a thief. I learned how to be a pickpocket and burglar when i was in Atlanta. I worked with a crew and was pretty good. I had to be, because I didn't have a place to go. My parents kicked me out, I went to Atlanta to live in the foster care system for a bit. They didn't care about me, so long as the checks kept coming. I had enough of my foster father's crap and chucked a charged chess piece at him. He pulls out a chess piece, a black bishop. I took the other to remind myself of who I am and where I came from. He slides the piece back into his jacket. Sorry about that... oh.. yeah.. I saw how they pulled off the job and I think I can get in with them to get more information and maybe even some samples of the drug. I figured if they'd heard about the crew I worked with, I might get lucky and in on cred...

He pauses for another moment and looks around. I'm not the planning type, I just find a way in and blow a hole out the exit. What's the plan?

"Woah, slow down. What plan? Spencer can barely walk, and we're in... lockdown, or detention, or whatever. Isn't the plan to sit tight, study for this sudden Classics exam, let the police do their job and wait for all this to blow over?"
May 28, 2019 7:21 am
Liberty whispers a few times with the other girls while everyone's getting settled in. Things like, "What happens if you sit on your wings? Have they ever cracked on you before?" and to Fiona, "You're so lucky that you have such a pretty shade of green. Can you imagine going around looking the same color as olive?" Small, conversational things, as she pulls her legs up, crossed in the seat with her, or as well as her jeans will allow.

When Logan moves in she gives him a furtive glance. The easy, carefree in which she's assimilated thus far today starts to edge away and she makes a show of looking down at her ankles while pulling her lips into saccharine smile. "The other two girls are really helping me," she admits, but then something seems to occur to her. To trouble her. To make her sit up straighter and more alert. She asks Logan, Fiona, or Ariel, whomever happens to respond first, "That Ellis guy. He was the one that was really quiet, right?"

Her brow knits as the TV screen flickers on. She listens quietly and with side-glances toward the others to see how they gauge this, to see how normal this sort of thing is, all while fidgeting with her cuticles.

In my experience with law enforcement, the police barely do their job. it took them 6 months to catch on to the amount of thieving done in Atlanta. Yes, I agree that we should study for the exam and be allowed out, but I am also looking at what other options we have.
May 28, 2019 11:15 am
Fee listens to Spencer as he whispers to her, then locks eyes with him for a little longer than is comfortable for everyone else. Something seems to pass between them, and when she finally turns away, she is grinning and blushing a deep violet.

She turns from Spencer and nods to Liberty, then whispers, "Yes, Ellis is the quiet one."

As Arthur and Ariel debate their plans, Fiona leans forward and waits for an opening.

"You guys may not have noticed, but I lost control just a little bit out there. I could have seriously hurt that guy. I know he wasn't a nice person, but that's no reason for me to hurt him." She leans back on the couch, letting out a deep sigh. "As much as I'd love to go play crime fighter, I think I need to stay here until I can control myself a little better. I don't want to hurt anyone."

She looks around at all the other students. "But if you guys all decide to go, you might need me. I'd rather be there for you than worry about you, or worse still, have something happen to you because I wasn't there to help."
May 28, 2019 12:40 pm
Arthur holds a hand up. Fiona, I don't want anyone to get hurt. My plan was just me going in and trying to get in with the group. Plus... and forgive for how rude this is going to sound... vaguely gesturing to the group. y'all don't know anything about thieving. If everyone went, it could be disastrous and ruin our chances of finding them.
He hangs in his head in hands for a second, before speaking again.
I'm sorry, that sounded a lot ruder out loud than in my head. This is just stuff I know and I am pretty good at it. And I know youall want to help. Ellis... what's the range on your brain-communications-network-thing?
May 28, 2019 1:10 pm
Logan stays silent as he listens to everyone else. Thinking for a minute, he finally breaks his silence. "I think Arthur is right. That may be the only way into figuring out what's going on. Yet we have to get past the test before we can even think about infiltrating the gang. Once we manage to pass and are allowed outside again, we can begin to investigate." Logan looks over at Arthur before continuing to speak. "When we do make a move against this gang, Arthur, it's a bad idea to go in alone. If things go bad, which they quickly could, you'll have no one to watch your back. Since you have the skills, I propose this idea. Pick someone that could be your so called partner. It could be for speed, brains or even muscle. One thing is for sure though, don't go in alone."
May 28, 2019 3:03 pm
I'll have to think on it. Each of you have something that could prove useful to a thief. another pause. Wow... I need to stop sounding so arrogant. The sin that leads to the fall... He moves his left hand to this right, gloved hand.
Anyway.... Fiona, your abilities can do many things... moving objects to cause a distraction, or removing a wallet from across the room... And didn't I see a forcefield of some kind back at the mall? There's also a control element, like you said earlier.

Ariel, your teleportation can be a bonus for a quick getaway if things get pear-shaped quick.

Logan, muscle always proves useful. The metal thing... is it always just armor or can you manipulate any kind of metal?
OOC:
@Logan: Arthur didn't see you make the handcuffs as Ariel teleported him out to the parking lot.
Spencer, with what you can do to electronics is amazing... But, are you okay to get around and help? I don't want to get into something awful and you pass out...

And Liberty, sorry but you're new and I don't trust new people that much yet. Please, don't take offense, I've just been burned by new people before and it's how I am.

Arthur will pick up the book and start looking at his notes again.

He leans his head into his hands..."This is what I meant by not being able to demonstrate this... The nosebleeds are over for now. The problem was I was getting too much information and it was overwhelming. Whenever I heard a question, my brain would immediately be on the internet trying to answer it, or a nearby computer, etc. accessing library databases, DMV records, FBI and police reports, City building permits or even just an online thesaurus for the answers, all the answers!

I kind of upgraded my brain, the unconsciousness was like a 'reboot'! ... I know how to... curb the urge now, and I can do searches in the background.
He looks at Fee. "I can monitor press releases, and I know everything the press didn't publish about what happened at the mall on the weekend! I know where everyone in this building is! It doesn't matter if they're in front of a camera or not! I memorized Plato while I was sleeping just now! Not just Alcibiades I and II, all of Plato!

You can see Spencer is a little agitated:"Ms. Clairemont is setting us up to fail, Alcibiades 1 and 2 comprises almost 500 pages of text... We either have to cheat, or this is a test of something else besides our knowledge of Plato, or she's offering us our freedom against completion of an impossible task, expecting us to fail."

Finally he turns to Liberty: "Ariel can take people with her when she teleports, can you do the same when you "phase"? Is that what you call it? Can you move through barriers, too? Like a door or a wall, or... the ground?" He makes a classic gesture like the Thinking Man.

"Three of the five guys we tagged in the mall were high school kids. I know which school. I know their GPAs and their club and sports team affiliations. That makes Liberty and I good candidates to go undercover with you guys as support. The other two were adult repeat offenders, and the one we lost I think was who recruited them.

Ariel, Arthur... that part of the parking lot you lost her in, not only was it outside the surveillance camera's view, but it was also near a manhole. You said she disappeared? Is it like how Liberty could maybe look like she disappeared as she passed through a wall or something?"

Spencer gets up and walks over to Arthur, placing his hands on both his shoulders for emphasis. "You need to promise you're not going to do anything alone. You're part of a team now, no one's getting burned, we're going to cover each other's backs. Liberty, you have a choice here... we have a team here, and we want you to play, but we're making up our own rules, and playing a game the headmistress doesn't like.

When it comes time Arthur, someone else could go in, and we'll rely on you to tell us how to find them and what to say. I think I can rig comms with a longer range than Ellis when we're ready."

He turns to Fee and Logan: Fee, we need you confident out there, we'll just work with what you're good at, and your Force Field, can it protect someone behind you?

We're all growing right now, it's going to be different next week or the week after. I went from nothing to SHAZAM! over the weekend. Logan, I'm not sure I understand your power at all. I get swords and armour, but how were you doing that with the coin today in class? Can you do stuff at range, like jam a gun or open a lock?

He puts his hand up to interrupt himself, consciously stopping... recognizing he's reached his limit, and takes a deep breath and sits back down beside Fee and rests his head back, he checks his lip with one hand to see if his nose is bleeding, it's not.

Arthur puts the book down and shakes his head at someone else going into a den and him on the sidelines. It's not just "finding them and knowing what to say". Puck had a knack for finding out who could be legitimate or not. Can anyone walk through a crowded subway and grab 5 wallets? Can anyone pick a lock in under 25 seconds? He would test people on the spot to see if they were legit. If they weren't, they were branded and forced out. I watched a branding once. Never again.

He shakes his head again. Granted, these are high-schoolers and probably amateurs at best, but I don't feel comfortable for anyone else besides me walking into a place like that. Besides, no doubt they heard of Puck in Atlanta so there is a chance I won't have a problem going into it. Spencer, with your "upgrade", you could probably have no problems going in with me, hacking security cameras and whatnot before hand. These places always have someone watching.

Arthur pulls the chess piece out, rolling it between his fingers as he thinks.

What did the security cameras show of the thief that hit the jewelry store? How did they get past the security and the cases? Did they check their marks before or just fly blind?

He looks back at the book. You mean I read 80 pages of this for nothing?

Logan thinks for a moment before he answers Arthur and Spencer at the same time. "Everyone knows about the sword and armor. During some of my training sessions I've been trying out new ways to work with metal. That was how I was able to secure the gunmen at the mall and the gift I gave Liberty. I'm pretty sure I can manipulate most metals, it's just that some metals are easier to work with than others. Now as far as distant metal objects, I did open the doors at the mall, but that's the only time that I've tried. What I really want to try is see if I can change the armor and sword. Maybe with practice I can mold the armored appearance and make something besides a sword."

Glancing over at Liberty, Logan goes quiet, almost as if he's at a loss for words." Have you had the tour yet? I can show you around if you want?"

"I think the underground may not be where we need to go first, is what I'm saying. At least until we know who we're looking for. If I'm right, looking for someone in that arena would probably arouse suspicion anyway, and the way trust works, we'd probably end up with someone looking for us instead.

I'm thinking we go undercover at the high school those other kids were from. They were all on sports teams, so I'm guessing there's a skill set they're looking for or a type of kid that's more susceptible to being recruited. You might even know about that Arthur..."

It's either that, or we go down a manhole near the mall, but I'm saving that idea as a last resort.

They were on sports teams? That's odd. When I was recruited to the den, I was living on the streets. They promised a warm meal and a place to sleep, so long as I worked for them. Maybe it has nothing to do with thieving, but there's an angle there. They have to have a fence, a go between to move stolen merchandise. The fence would know who is coming and what they are bringing. It involves the less friendly parts of town, but could work.

He pauses for a second. We could work this from two different angles. You infiltrate the school and see what you can find out about the kids being recruited. I can develop some connections and find the den, provided I can convince Ms. Clairemont and Dr. Pryce that going back to my old ways for the common good.

Liberty sort of off-hand interjects at some point while Spencer is talking, side-eyeing the others to make sure by their expressions that she's not off or something, "But she didn't give us a time limit... did she? We could just study until then..." She uses her hands like a scale gesture, both sides tipping occasionally. "Like, I dunno your Mom outside of a few minutes but unless you think she's gunna' throw in a pop quiz at some point? And I haven't tried with other people." Her expression darkens. "I don't think I want to, either. What if they get stuck in a solid object somehow?"

"They gave me kind of the cliff notes version of things," she whispers with Logan softly when the attention is off her and everyone is focusing on Spencer again. "If you want to give me a more in depth one, I think I would like that." She gives him another friendly smile, this time meeting his eyes with building confidence.

Logan smiles as he hears Liberty's reply. Looking at his hands for a second, he gathers some courage and replies. "Great, we can head out as soon as we are done here."

Just checking: is Spencer's "The Alcibiades dialogues are 500+ pages" line a deliberate lie to try to set the group against Clairemont, or just a mistake? I don't want to kick off an in-character conflict if you were just pulling a number out of the air, but I don't know what Arthur was reading 80 pages of - possibly all the disputations of the texts' attribution to Plato, rather than the dialogues themselves?

OOC:
When I looked it up, the pdf I found was 488 pages, do I have that dead wrong? Oops, I see now that it's a collection with Alcibiades AND a bunch of other writings... the whole book is 500+ pages, but Alcibiades I and II is only 182 pages.

My bad, sorry about that. It sounds like an honest mistake! Who knows what kind of questions she'll ask anyway!

How is taking a test going to work anyway? How many stones do we need to spend to pass?

Rofl! I was wondering about that number too and why Spencer was saying 500 pages.

Alcibiades 1 & 2 are dialogues. It's pretty easy to read through them quickly. The test is going to be is that I'm going to ask you questions on it and you can either show off how studious your characters are and look up answers on diff websites like some sort of little scummy open book test OR. ORRRR. You can try to dumb down / play it up to whatever you think your character's understanding of the text might be. First Alcibiades in particular is extremely relevant to people who want to partake in vigilante work, as it primarily deals with what Justice is, what Knowledge is, and who is qualified to make decisions using either abstract idea.

If you want, we can RP a class over it with Wesley, you guys can do your own study for it, etc. However, I'm hoping that we can have a cool little philosophical moment during the test where we can see how everyone interprets the text for themselves. Y'know. Before the children are placed in a situation where they may or may not be the dispensers of Justice.

As much as I don't miss doing homework, I really like the idea of reflecting on the text as our characters - that sounds like a great (and well-used in popular media) way to get more insight into who they are as people.

I think we probably don't need to overdo it, though - either a class discussion with Wesley or RPing through the exam, and skimming through whichever one we don't do, would probably be enough. I prefer the idea of playing out the discussion, and then perhaps using the exam to summarise each character's individual perspective on Justice.

Fiona begins to read her copy of Alcibiades 1, head down flipping back to cross-reference, and studiously taking notes in a spiral bound notebook.
Jun 3, 2019 3:20 am
Spencer looks over Fee's shoulder and calculates what she's reading by her eye position, and then starts to speak the words of the dialogue in an impression of Dr. Pryce as Plato and Ms. Clairemont as Alcibiades (those are his only two good impressions). He changes words sometimes or repeats them in different translations for better clarity. He sometimes crinkles his nose at the sound of his mother's voice saying some of the phrases. His voice goes hoarse quite quickly, and he leaves to get a bottle of water, but when he gets back, he has a second bottle of water, some beef jerky, chips and an armful of other snacks he drops on the table to share. In between bites, he carries on the impressions with his mouth full, picking up exactly where you've read to while he was gone.

Wait. *flips back over pages*

Did you guys decide to completely skip the conversation you were having or did you all just bring your books to the conversation? I think our OOC convo might have interrupted what was already happening with the scene, unless we want to retcon a little bit of that and make it that Spencer initiated this meeting as a way of everyone going over the dialogue together. Otherwise, I think Arthur made the last points and then no one really responded to him (Liberty was too busy making eye-flirts with Logan).

I can give some prompts to talk about it if you like, or I can skip straight to the quiz from Clairemont and we can make that focus-- that way you're not basically repeating and we can just get straight to the meat of what each person thinks the text could mean. I can always just give cliff notes!
Jun 3, 2019 12:56 pm
OOC:
Arthur was mainly just spitballing ideas. He already knows what he's going to do, regardless of the outcome of the test or the group's decision.

Conviction takes many forms. lol
Jun 3, 2019 1:02 pm
OOC:
Oh, aye. I guess I got sidetracked by all the ooc conversation. Skipping to the quiz sounds like a good idea. That way we don't repeat ourselves. A cliff notes version would be awesome!
Jun 3, 2019 6:38 pm
OOC:
Spencer's demo was meant to infer they could do what they want anyway. He would like to proceed with permission, though, if possible, just as a safety net. It sounds like Ms. Clairemont's might give us some freedom to operate, and we can start feeling out what it's like to work as a team.

I was planning to use our telepath to link us up so that Ellis could pass questions to me, I could answer them, and he would relay the answers back, get the oral exam out of the way (in what would seem record time!), and then we'd have most of the day without classes to get started.
Jun 4, 2019 1:45 am
OOC:
I suspect, given they know Ellis' capabilities, they'll be putting some sort of measures in place to prevent such an obvious way to cheat the test. Or, if that method were left possible, whether or not we used it would be the 'real' test of our moral character, etc. I think we might each be on our own for this one.
Jun 5, 2019 6:09 pm
OOC:
I think the exposure of those capabilities would probably be worth it. Spencer's been 'probing the fence' since he got here, mostly emotionally, but we need to start doing it physically now, too. It's part of why we're in this position, I hope. Moral character aside, though, it seems we're seeking permission when heroism is taking initiative. :P
Yays, let quiz!

After awhile of studying, Arthur gets fidgety and heads to the danger room.
OOC:
I am not sure if there's even a thing like this on the Danger Room simulator, but if so, Arthur is going to do this.
He starts working on the computer.. Hmm... combat...wonder if they have anything more subtle....Ah, I think I figured it out.

He enters: "Crowded city sidewalk". The simulation opens to a section of New York City frequented by many people. As Arthur makes his way down the street, he tests his pickpocketing skills, mainly to see if he still has them. Calmly bumping and shuffling among the crowd, he is able to snag about 6 wallets and a watch. Not bad, Arthur.. Not bad at all. Confident he can replicate this in town, he returns to the computer and enters: "Various locks. doors, jewelry cases, safes." As the simulation turns into a room with various doors and safes, he will make his way through them all, using his lockpick set he got at Home Depot.

After a couple of hours of picking locks and picking pockets, he'll return back to his room, hide the lockpick set and return to his reading.

Jun 24, 2019 2:30 am
OOC:
I love how headstrong Arthur is about just reading the bare minimum to pass so that we can get on with being vigilantes, it's very true to a teenage attitude. ;)

The test isn't really a reading test that we have to pass in order to go outside, it's a trap to make us think about how we can be sure that we're using our powers ethically and responsibly.
Jun 24, 2019 10:56 am
OOC:
Ethically is just a fancy word for semantics. lol.

The staff knows about Arthur's criminal background. They already had the idea he would blur lines of right/wrong. He's somewhat responsible with his powers, but ethics is a big gray area to him.
