Shore Leave: The Bar

May 14, 2019 10:35 pm
Day 1, 1700 hours

After some time to get settled in, Zephyr and Moira meet up outside their cottages and walk towards the plaza by the beach. There are some shops and bars around there that you can see.
You walk past a place that catches Moira's eye. A rustic building made from dark wood that looks like it was not made by professionals. There are some fishing decorations hanging in front of the entrance and a large sign painted on an exotic looking fish from wood that reads "Stoneshell Pub"
You decide to enter and find yourselves in a cramped looking little room. There are a few tables and some stairs that lead to a second level. The house looks much smaller on the inside than it did from the outside with a low ceiling that you can just very barely stand upright in without hitting your heads.
The bar is almost completely empty. The only guest is a man, sand colored hair, a light tan, doesn't look like spacefleet, sitting at the counter. He has a few empty glasses next to him but doesn't seem drunk. He's having an animated conversation with the barkeeper, a short alien man who reminds you of a humanoid turtle with a long neck, deep black eyes and a huge, hard shell on his back.
He looks up at you when you come in and very slowly welcomes you before turning his attention back to the man in front of him. He doesn't seem to recognize you right away but Moira immediately does, even though it's been a while since she's last seen her old friend...
May 14, 2019 10:49 pm
Stone Firmjaw!

She lets out a deep laugh and hustles to the counter, waving Zephyr along with her

Oi, Zeph, yer in fer a treat.

She nods at the sandy hair-ed man, knowing she's interrupting his conversation, but too excited to resist. She slaps her hands on the table and gives "finger guns" to the turtle-man.

Stone! It's RC! Zephyr, this is mah old crewmate from tha Bull. How're tha years treatin' yeh?
May 14, 2019 10:50 pm
Alira walks into the pub. She could pass for a human girl, possibly in her teens. A closer look at her ears or forehead would show that she isn't human after all. She has dark hair and eyes and her attire is pretty standard.
She goes to an empty seat at the bar.

Give me something that tastes good but will help me de-stress.

She accepts the glass carefully. If you were watching closely, she seems to do everything carefully.

Thanks. Please charge it to my room.

She shows her room key and makes her way to a table where she can have her back to the wall and people watch.

The turtle man lets out a deep, slow laugh as he recognizes Moira. "RC, good to see you, old house. Who would have guessed you would show up here."
He turns his attention to Zephyr and says: "Any friend of my friends - or of good alcohol - is my friend. Now, what can I bring you?"
Before you can reply, Alira comes up to the bar and orders a drink. Stone pours her a clear drink and she takes it to a table. The sandy haired man watches her closely. He nods at Zephyr and Moira as a greeting but then gets up and follows Alira, taking his pint with him. Standing at her table, he gestures towards another chair and asks: "May I?"
Stone pours you whatever you're ordering and then leans down, resting his arms on his shell in a gesture Moira has seen many times before. "So, RC, what brings you here? Just on vacation?"
May 14, 2019 11:10 pm
Moira hasn't stopped smiling. She asked for Stone's special of the day, and was pleased to get a mellow, floral inner-rim liqueur.

Much needed shore leave after a hell of an encounter with a new species. But! We're here ta relax.

She winks and chuckles.

Ask me again after three er four, eh? An' Zeph here is our science officer. We're servin' on tha USS Potential now. How's life! Yeh dunnae look a day over 275.
May 14, 2019 11:11 pm
Help yourself.
Alira pushes the chair across from her out with her foot.

I don't mean to be rude, but I want to make something clear. I am all for some friendly conversation and a couple of drinks...but that is all I am interested in. I know that sounds a little conceited, but I prefer to be upfront about things.

"Good, good", Stone replies. "I heard about that ship. You did something that got people talking. You'll have to tell me all about it. And you look good, too. Not a day over 250, I would say." He laughs again

The man sits down at your table, Alira. "I appreciate the candor, though it wasn't the answer I was hoping for." He smiles and looks you up and down for a second Then he says: "Let me guess: You're spacefleet, junior officer, working your way up the career ladder. Yes or now? The name's Nic, by the way. What can I call you?"
May 15, 2019 12:05 am
You can call me whatever you want, but my name is Alira

Alira looks the man up and down

Let me guess...spacer, spent a little time in the fleet, but rules chafed, now you are down on your luck so you used an old contact to spend time here where whoever's chasing you can't find you. And in your spare time you use your "charm" to bed cadets.
How did I do Nic?
May 15, 2019 12:52 am
bowlofspinach says:
"Good, good", Stone replies. "I heard about that ship. You did something that got people talking. You'll have to tell me all about it. And you look good, too. Not a day over 250, I would say." He laughs again
Moira knows to grin at this. She drums her fingers on her wide hips.

That's aboot right. She laughs. She's wearing a pleated skirt and some tank top displaying a man playing flaming bagpipes wearing a space helmet. Still the boots and the headband, though. Far more relaxed, and....feminine? Sort of? Than what she normally wears.

Oi. On mah tab. Can yeh hook Zeph here up with some a' that starflower whiskey? Yeh got any?

She smiles at Zephyr. Unless yer up fer somethin' else.
May 15, 2019 2:19 am
"Starflower whiskey huh? Never had that one, but if whiskey's in the name I'm game! Zephyr is dressed down for the occasion, but still looks pretty dapper. Untucked button up shirt with the top few left undone, sleeves rolled up messily but tight around his forearms, linen pants, and two day old stubble.

"Pleasure to meet ya Stone. Quite a strong name you have there." He nods at the other new arrival, and throws back the Starflower whiskey like he's been doin it his whole life. Moments later it hits him hard, but he does his best to hide it. "Keep it comin, we're shellebrating!"
May 15, 2019 6:31 am
Stone serves your drinks and when Zephyr asks for a refill, he gives one to him as well. The refilled glass is not quite as full as the first one was and Zephyr feels Stone's eyes on him as he checks out how well he can handle his alcohol.
He laughs at Zephyr's joke, although Moira is certain he must have heard it before more than once.
"Celebrating, eh?", he asks. "If you tell me the story and it impresses me, I'll give you one of my specials on the house."

Nic takes a swig from his glass and replies: "Not bad, Alira. Except for the down on my luck part. I'm actually here to look for someone, not hide from someone." After a short pause, he adds "And Cadets really aren't my type, too young and boring. Bedding people with some space experience is far more interesting. You should try it some time."
May 15, 2019 7:05 am
Alira takes a drink.
You misunderstood. I am not against bedding people with experience. I am against bedding you.

Alira laughs and finishes her drink.

Although if I didn't have business to attend to, I might let you think you changed my mind.
May 15, 2019 7:15 am
Nic gestures to the bar and Stone, after quickly excusing himself from Moira and Zephyr, brings Alira a refill. He then returns to the bar and nods at Zephyr to indicate that he's back and listening again.
"Harsh but fair", Nic replies with a smile. "What exactly is it that you're doing in spacefleet. No, let me guess, you're command branch, red uniform, hoping to become a captain?"
May 15, 2019 12:08 pm
Moira smirks when she sees Zephyr's slight grimace, but doesn't say anything. She does, however, raise her eyebrows at Stone's offer. She's just not sure what's going on inside Zephyr's head now that there isn't a slug in there. She doesn't want to stress him out. But talking helps people sometimes....

Those videos she's been watching to get certified as a counselor are very vague.

Whaddya think, Zeph?
May 15, 2019 6:47 pm
Alira takes the drink.

Thanks.
May all the saints preserve me from command. I do not want the headaches of being in charge of a whole ship.

She takes a drink.

No. Security chief on an exploration ship is my goal.

She looks at Nic.

My turn.
You didn't deny it when I said you were ex fleet. I am not sure I got the reason right though. Did you leave out of some sense of honour? Maybe you feel you screwed up and now you are punishing yourself.

She looks to see any reaction.

Oh...who are you looking for?

"Security, eh? Wouldn't have guessed that. You're full of surprises." He finishes his own drink and waves to the bar for another one. Stone sees him and grumbles in response. He looks like he's going to take his time with this order.
"Is that the kind of person you think I am? Full of honor and self-sacrifice?" He lets out a short laugh. "No, I left for the money. There's things only latinum can get you and as you know, you don't get rich in the fleet."
After Alira's next question, he replies: "Just an old friend that I have some business to discuss with."
May 15, 2019 7:24 pm
Money? How disappointingly ordinary.
Well, I have very little latinum, and I doubt I know who you are looking for.
I guess that just leaves drinking.

Alira finishes her drink and says to the bartender

When you bring his drink can you please bring me another? My tab for both
May 15, 2019 8:15 pm
Nic looks like he is about to protest but then smirks. "I do hope you'll give me an opportunity to repay my debt." He leans forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Any special reason why you came to this planet for your leave?"
May 15, 2019 8:29 pm
Orders. Family. And sparkling conversation.

I can't decide if this guy is a harmless flirt, or something a little more...worrisome.

Can I help you find your...friend? My family is posted here, they may be able to help.
May 15, 2019 8:43 pm
"She shouldn't be too difficult to find, but thanks for the offer." He glances over to Stone, who is still talking to Moira and Zephyr. "You're new on the island, right? Did you arrive with these guys?"
OOC:
You can give me a Feelings roll to judge his intentions if you want.
May 15, 2019 9:00 pm
No. Never saw them before. Do you know them?
OOC:
Not sure if being a security officer would make me an expert. Feel free to ignore the second die.

Rolls

Whatch you talkin bout Nic - (2d6)

(56) = 11

May 15, 2019 9:09 pm
"They look familiar. I might have seen them before but I don't remember their names. They must be from the Potential."
He turns back to Alira. "What ship are you assigned to? Any interesting stories?"
OOC:
You don't sense anything suspicious about him. From what you can tell, he just wants to have a good time and thinks you're interesting
May 15, 2019 9:42 pm
Well, I was on the Pacifica. I got a call to come here. I have a feeling it may be for reassignment.

Alira looks a little sadly at her drink.

That's why I can't have any more of these. I am not sure when I may get the call. You remember how it 8s in the fleet...hurry up and wait.

And that means no dalliances either.

I think I am going to switch to coffee, or maybe something cold and caffeinated.

Alira lets out a sigh.

You know Nic, if I was actually here on leave, this might have ended differently. Although, since I am used to a much higher gravity, it might be better for you this way.

Alira gives him a wink and a laugh.
May 15, 2019 10:36 pm
Zephyr glances at RC out of the corner of his eye and she catches a hint of uncertainty in his look. He then puts on a brave smile and looks back at Stone.

"Well," he says to Stone, "its kind of a long story, but here goes..."

And Zephyr recounts the entire mission story, with quite a bit of embellishment on the heroics of his companions, but downplaying his own actions. Leaving out any classified details of course.

"...so you see, I am celebrating the successful and relatively peaceful discovery of a new species! I know its probably not as exciting to others, but it is to me. When I was a boy I dreamed of joining Spacefleet for this very reason! As a scientist, I can't think of anything more noble or exciting."

Moira does interject on occasion to try to give Zephyr more credit. She realizes that, for as stressful as the whole thing was, she's genuinely smiling as he finishes the story. They lived, after all. She scans the table and sees several more glasses of various kinds, mostly hers, that Stone facilitated while the story was told.

Spacefleet is just a string 'a adventures, really. Well, an' some borin' stuff. But it's a delight. Tha good Lieutenant Commander even got ta name 'em.

She flashes a smile at Zephyr, trying to get the "good job, thank you" point across.
May 16, 2019 5:47 am
Stone is listening closely, apparently captivated by the recounting of the adventure. He makes sure to keep refilling your drinks while Zephyr is talking.
He also refills Alira and Nic's glasses at one point but hurries back faster than you would expect from a tortoise man to hear the rest of the story. "Fascinating", he finally says. "And very dangerous. I'm happy you made it out in one piece, both of you."
He fills up three flashes with a clear liquid, puts one in front of each of you and takes the third one. "Don't try to drink this in one go. Slow sips unless you want to meet the doctor on site." He laughs, making it unclear whether he was completely serious or joking, then raises his glass and says "To adventure. I do miss the excitement sometimes, although I was only ever an observer on the Bull."
May 16, 2019 5:58 am
"If you want coffee, there's a better place at the entrance of the guest village. I heard they're actually getting real coffee beans shipped from Menur-2 instead of replicating them."
Nic takes another big swig from his new pint. He smiles at Alira's last statement but doesn't reply to it.
May 16, 2019 6:39 am
Thanks for the tip. I may check it out later. But, believe it or not, I have to go see my parents. They work here, and I have that meeting I mentioned.

Alira stands and offers a handshake to Nic.

Thanks for an entertaining interlude. Good luck in finding whoever you are looking for and may the latinum flow your way.

Alira heads to the bar to settle her tab.

Thanks for the excellent service.

Alira leaves a generous tip and directs a question to the bartender and everyone sitting at the bar.
OOC:
If I know who and where I am to meet, I will ask directions there. If not, I will ask for directions to the Academy area where my parents are likely to be.

Nic shakes her hand and holds on a little bit longer than necessary before letting go. "If you're looking for company while you're here, I'm staying in cottage number 14. Or you can just find me around the bars here."
Stone thanks you for the tip and invites you to come back again soon.
OOC:
You know the name of the person you're supposed to be meeting, Lt. Comm. Cassandra Darcy, but no meeting place or time has been established yet. You can wait for her to contact you or you can look for her yourself.
I messaged you on discord about your family but they shouldn't be difficult to find either if you look for them
May 16, 2019 6:55 am
Alira asks the bartender.

Did you happen to have a Cassandra Darcy come through here? She is a Lt. Commander. If not, do you know where I could ask that might send me the right way?
May 16, 2019 11:46 am
Before Moira drinks, the young lady steps up. Moira's ears perk.

Darcy? She's from our ship. Not sure where she'd be right this second, but do yeh mind me askin' what business yeh have with'er? Lieutenant Commanders Bruce and Borealis.
May 16, 2019 3:17 pm
Hello. My name is Alira Kittan. I am too meet her about a possible reassignment. Mine, not hers.

Alira offers a hand to shake.

Maybe we will end up shipmates
May 16, 2019 3:26 pm
Moira returns, actually a little relieved that she's not talking about Darcy leaving. The grip isn't painful, but still much more intense than she would have expected from the slight little one.

Pleasure's mine. With a grip like that ah'd hope yer movin' ta security!
May 16, 2019 3:33 pm
Yes. I was a security officer on the Pacifica. I am not sure if this will be a lateral move or a promotion.

Alira flexes her hand.

It has taken me a lot of practice to get that handshake right.
If you are talking to Lt. Commander Darcy, could you tell her I was looking for her? I was told to meet her, but not when or where.
May 16, 2019 3:57 pm
Moira nods. No worries, though ah'm not sure when we'll see'er next. Where should she look for yeh?
May 16, 2019 5:23 pm
bowlofspinach says:
He laughs, making it unclear whether he was completely serious or joking, then raises his glass and says "To adventure. I do miss the excitement sometimes, although I was only ever an observer on the Bull."
To adventure!, Zephyr replies, and takes a sip of this new drink. He is starting to feel the buzz from all this drinking, but welcomes it rather than slowing down. Up until now he has been standing and leaning against the bar, but now he moves for a stool

Hmmm, he says as though just noticing something, The alcohol seems to have moved from inhibiting only my frontal lobes, and is moving to my parietal lobes. In my experience if it moves past my occipital lobe we're all in trouble.

Ignoring his own observation he takes another sip of his drink, glances up when he hears the mention of Darcy, but then turns back to Stone. You were an observer? Of what exactly?
May 16, 2019 5:30 pm
"Of everything, of little RC here.", Stone replies. "I was a barkeeper on the Bull, so I got to watch all the excitement but never actually had to solve it. Although I believe that my advice saved the day more than once."

He looks at Alira. "She hasn't been in here yet, or at least hasn't given her name. If she comes in, I can give her a message if you want."
May 16, 2019 6:53 pm
OOC:
Altira gives her room number, comm number, or whatever would be appropriate.
Thank you all. I am sure I will run into her. I won't interrupt your conversation any further. Have a great day all.

Alira waves and with a smile heads to the door.

I wonder what the chances are of running into potential shipmates. Small universe.
May 16, 2019 7:33 pm
Moira tips a salute to her as she leaves. Finally taking a sip of Stone’s special, she lets out a low whistle. This would be enough to get her tipsy if she wasn't already 3 or 4 in. But hey. It’s shore leave.

Well, she seems like a nice lass. Zeph, ah think ah’m havin’ That lobe thing yeh we’re talkin’ aboot, too. Oof. What is this, Stone?

Stone takes a small sip from his own glass before replying. "Apparently it's called Fleetwine. That Farredan captain, Theliak I think, has gifted it to me. I'm currently trying to have the replicator analyze it but it's having some difficulties. It's good, though, isn't it?"
May 16, 2019 9:07 pm
Moira smiles and nods in agreement.

Ah’ll have ya hook yeh up with some ‘a this Auber Spirit Wine ah’ve got. Life been treatin’ yeh all right?
May 16, 2019 9:27 pm
"Im doing well, little one. As it turns out people on shore leave are much better tippers than on a spaceship. Auber Spirit Wine? I haven't had any of that in years. It's pretty hard to get."
The front door opens and a small group of officers talking amongst each other enter. They sit down at a table and Stone excuses himself from the conversation to serve them.
May 16, 2019 10:01 pm
Day 1, 2230 hours

Some hours pass. Moira and Zephyr sit down at a table and talk, steadily getting their drinks refilled by Stone who at first sits with them for a while but as the bar fills up more and more, spends less time at their table. From time to time, others join them at their table and leave again. At one point, they notice that the man that was already in there when they arrived, Nic, leaves, but he gets replaced by a steady stream of new guests.

Cass and Alex go from bar to bar, getting progressively more drunk in each of them. The alcohol is significantly better than it was at the beach and by the time it's dark, they are both wasted. They spot another bar they haven't been in yet and enter. It's small and crowded but it looks like fun. The barkeeper is a large, tortoise-like alien with a friendly face who sees you and waves you in right away. As you come inside, you notice Moira and Zephyr sitting at a small table close to the bar, both with a drink in front of them

Alira decides that she should be well rested for the talk with Lt. Comm. Darcy the next day so you head into your cottage early to get some sleep. You can hear partying noises from the direction of the plaza but they're not loud enough to be annoying.
May 16, 2019 10:18 pm
As Alex struggles to open the door to this latest bar, Cass is saying, "I just don' understand it. How could ev'ry single person we asked give us bad directions to the M'rengi bar? 'S like people were trying to keep us fr'm finding 'm. Like a conspeercy." Finally noticing Alex's difficulty, Cass reaches out and helps her open the door.

They each walk through at the same time, accidentally crowding each other. They manage to sort things out with simultaneous incoherent apologies and patting each other on the arms and shoulders. When Cass spots Moira and Zephyr sitting at a table, she feels the kind of joyful awe that surely comes only with discovering a new planet, or the last green jelly bean in the jar. She points them out to Alex with a gesture made grandiose because she's trying so hard to appear sober.
May 16, 2019 10:41 pm
"I am very shertain that the last directions were off... off..."

Alex waves her hand in a vague sort of gesture, struggling to find the word. She grimaces and holds a hand to her chest. "’Scuse me.". She pauses again, and then says, way too loudly, pleased with her ingenuity, "Planet! Off-planet!"

She peers at Cass owlishly. "We have a ship, right? Maybe we could use it to find the elusive Keeper of True Recipes.". That’s when she sees where Cass is looking. She spreads her arms out as though she’s about to hug something. One of the patrons walking near takes a wide path around her, just in case. "Moira! Zephyr! My very favorite of all the roast chickens I know!"

In a stage aside to Cass, she says, perfectly audibly, "He’s the only one I know, but we don’t need to tell him that."
May 16, 2019 10:58 pm
Cass nods somberly, holding a finger to her lips - well, to her chin, but then sliding it up to her lips - to indicate her vow of silence about whatever it was Alex had just said. Then she throws an arm around Alex's shoulders and heads them both toward the table.

"I'm so happy to finally see us," she says, clumsily hugging first Zephyr and then Moira. "Al'x 'n I've had the strangest time try'nta..." She trails off, then suddenly begins to giggle uproariously. It picks up steam, forcing her to bend at the waist, hands on her knees until the laughter dies down enough for her to gasp, "Roast chicken!"

When the giggles have become more sporadic, she wrestles an inanimate but somehow combative chair out from the table and plops onto it in a triumph of dumb luck over physics. Turning to Moira, she says, "I'm sorry. You were saying?"
May 17, 2019 12:18 am
Moira’s always been better at acting sober than Cass, but it’s been a long day. She thwacked her forehead in an attempt to salute.

Cassano! Alex! Yer here! An’ it looks like yeh’ve been keepin’ Busy! Zeph was jus’ tellin’ me aboot tha fungi an’ spores on tha Potential that help the air quality. He is so smart! she says, bopping him on the shoulder.

Is it.....easier to understand her? How drunk is everyone??

When we’ve got a sec.... Ah’ve wrote a song!! Well, words. Et’s based on tha ancient Earth drinkin’ hymn "Donald, Where’s Yer Troosers"! . You’ve never seen her grin this big.

Cass goggles at Moira. "A song?" Her tone is almost reverent, as though Moira had said she'd met God, or had a baby. "You wrote a song?"

She puts a hand to her chest, seemingly overcome with emotion, then places her hands on either side of Moira's face. "I want to hear the song," she says. Then she repeats these words, in fragments or their entirety, over and over, as though trying to get Moira's attention, moving her hands to pat the engineer's face, arms, hand, top of the head. "I want to--" pat "--hear the song. I want--" pat "I want to hear--" pat "--the song. The song. I want to--" pat "--hear it."
May 17, 2019 1:25 am
Moira grins wildly and, losing her balance more than a little, begins to sing her song....accompanied by a small guitar Stone had? This apparently isn't an unusual occurrence.

And she sings, in loud, bawdy, Bard-like strands.

By the end of the song she's on the table, laughing maniacally and with a few more drinks emptied that she had been taking during the interludes. At some points she hopped down and forced the others to dance with her. Right now, Cassano's on the table with her, doing some form of a jig and reel. There is every probability that Moira's wearing her skirt kilt-style. Luckily, there's no proof of this.

She stops and holds her hands on her knees, panting between laughs.

Cass. Caaaaaaaaass. Was. Was that a good song?

Cass responds by laughing and throwing her arms around Moira, nearly unbalancing them both off the table.

"Whoa, we'd better get down, I think." Cass holds out a hand to whomever will help her and Moira down.
May 17, 2019 6:01 am
As Cass and Moira are struggling to get down from the table, both of them find a hand in front of them, held out to help them down.
Before they can get off the table with the offered help, the front door of the bar opens and a group of four people enters.
They are obviously spacefleet, even though none of them are wearing uniform. Three out of the four are human, the last one is an alien with a bone ridge from his forehead to the back of his neck where it disappears under his shirt. They all seem to be in their thirties, except for a young woman with dark hair and a complexion that looks Mediterranean or maybe Arabic, who is in her early twenties. They enter without looking around much, looking like they know the place well, and find a spot at the bar where they order some drinks.
Alex recognizes the young woman who seems to have not spotted her in the crowd yet.
May 17, 2019 6:47 am
Cass notes the arrival of the Spacefleet people peripherally, more concerned with getting down from the table than with scoping out newly arrived bar patrons. She takes the offered hand and manages to get her feet to the floor. She finds her empty chair at the table and drains the last of her current drink. Turning to Alex, intending to say something enthusiastic and moderately coherent, she notices that the diplomat's attention seems to be on a group of people at the bar.
May 17, 2019 4:18 pm
Watching Alex's face is almost like an educational vid of how the brain controls expression. Thanks to the liberal application of alcohol, the synapses fire in slow-motion, and her features respond with equal deliberation.

First, her eyes start to widen as she spots the young woman at the bar. Her hand rises to cover her gradually opening mouth (though she misses, and splays her fingers across her cheek instead). Her posture loosens and a sappy smile covers her face. She starts to get up from her seat, though she needs a lot of careful stabilization to do so. Wobbling through the patrons toward the bar, she calls out, "Julia! Stars, you came! I thought you didn't answer 'cause... but you came!" And before the poor young woman can even turn fully, Alex has awkwardly wrapped her in a hug.
May 17, 2019 4:43 pm
Julia spins around and pushes Alex away instinctively. She's never liked physical displays of affection, especially in public, and she definitely didnt expect it here. Her face shows confusion. "Mom? What are you doing here?"
She steps back and looks Alex up and down for a bit.
As you look at her up close, you notice that her appearance has changed since the last time you saw her. Her hair is shorter than you remember and she has switched from contacts to glasses apparently.

When she speaks up again, she doesn't look quite as confused anymore. "Oh, I get it. You heard about it and you're here to talk me out of it, aren't you? Well, you're out of luck."
May 17, 2019 5:05 pm
Seeing her friend get pushed by a stranger prompts Cass to get up from the table and walk toward the commotion. The fact that Alex had engaged the stranger in a hug before getting pushed doesn't register until she remembers Alex mentioning that her daughter was graduating from the Academy soon. By the time she's close enough to hear the conversation, Cass is wearing a big smile.

"Alex, this your daughter? Looks just like you. I think." She sticks out a hand. "I'm Cass. Nice t' meet you."

Julia looks at Cass, her expression turning back to slight confusion. She shakes Cass' hand quickly and just introduces herself as "Julia"
She then turns back to Alex and says "You're both drunk." It's not a question or an accusation, just a factual statement.
May 17, 2019 5:40 pm
"Shore leave," Cass says by way of explanation. "And nobody could need that more than your mom, after all she's been through." At the memory of just what Alex did go through recently, Cass is overwhelmed with feelings of compassion, and wraps Alex in a fiercely inappropriate hug.

Julia raises an eyebrow at the hug and then narrows her eyes at her mother. It looks as if she's checking out Alex for injuries or signs that something is wrong.
"Why? What happened? Are you okay?"

Stone comes by and hands her a drink that she hasn't even ordered yet. She nods a thank you without taking her eyes off Alex.
May 17, 2019 6:29 pm
Alex stares blankly at Julia, as her addled brain attempts to make sense of her daughter's initial response. Cass's timely arrival sends her feeble train of thought careening completely off the rails, and she returns to her friendly drunkenness, returning the commander's hug and apparently appreciating having someone to lean against.

"This is my daughter! Julia," she says cheerfully, forgetting or having failed to notice that she already introduced herself. "Julia, this is ... oh. She already told you her name. And yes, we are happily, wonderfully drunk."

She beams warmly, until she realizes what Julia's just said. "What do you mean, what happened? I thought you got my comm... that's... not why you're here?" Peering more closely at her daughter, she reaches out to touch Julia's hair. "You cut your hair? You had such gorgeous long hair!" She turns to Cass and adds earnestly, "Beautiful hair. From her father. I was her age, I was already going grey." Turning back to Julia with a fond look, she adds, "Might have been from having to raise a 1-year old by myself."

"Ohhh," Cass says mournfully. "I'm so sorry." She seems to be reacting to the news of Alex's single motherhood, but then she frowns, putting her hands into her own hair. "Am I? Going gray? I feel like I should be, after everything. Is it...?" She bows her head, as though the much taller Alex needs the help to look at the top of her head.
May 17, 2019 6:46 pm
"Can we focus on this matter first?" Julia seems annoyed, but also genuinely worried about her mother. "I got a message saying you're MIA, then suddenly that you've been found and reassigned to a different ship. I was busy, your message must have slipped through the cracks. What exactly happened to you?"
May 17, 2019 7:43 pm
Alex turns from where she was carefully peering at the top of Cass's head.

There's a brief moment of pain that flashes all too obviously across Alex's face when Julia says she was too busy to listen to her mother's message. She waves a hand vaguely. "It was nothing, really," she says, cheerful tone returning, though not at the same carefree level as before. "You can listen to my message sometime when you have a few moments. I'm fine. We're fine. Everyone's fine." She puts an arm around Cass's shoulders and gives her a side hug. "Now, if you're not... well... never mind that. What are you doing here, honey?"

Before Julia can respond, Cass makes what she probably intends to be a disdainful but restrained grunt. It comes out as a loud, indelicate snort. "Sure, it was nothing. If y'call being held prisoner for weeks by an alien army nothing." She gives Alex an affectionately scolding look before turning to Julia. "And you! Who's so busy that they don't have time to listen to a comm from their mother? I mean, seriously! I'm sure she would listen to every comm from you, un... unlike some parents."

Cass' shoulders droop abruptly and she lapses into a brooding silence, leaning heavily against Alex.

Ooooooiiiiiiii Moira manages slowly now that she’s (sort of) caught her breath. Dunnae worry Tynee Alex. Ah mist tuns a noots frum Home all tha time en school. Oi. Are yeh en school?

She pauses.

Alex! Ah dinnae knoo yeh had ah Tynee Alex!!!

Moira has passed the point of being more understandable.

"I mean, I almost died!" Cass says to Alex and Moira. She holds up three fingers. "Twice! The least he could do is drop me a line: 'Glad you're not dead. All the best, Dad.' Is that so hard?"
May 17, 2019 8:39 pm
Moira nods (less than) soberly at Cass’s outburst, pulling her into a firm, maternal, engulfing-bosom embrace.

Et’s all right, Lass. Et’s All right. Ah’m soore Tynee Alex ain’t as bad as yer Pappy.

She gives a LOUD sniff, but doesn’t cry.

Ah dinnae knoo yer Pappy was such ah tooooool!
May 17, 2019 8:42 pm
"Mmmph bmm mm bmphmmb," Cass says from within Moira's bosom.
May 17, 2019 8:49 pm
There yeh goo, Lass. There yeh goo.

Her grip loosens, possibly only because she’s tired.
May 17, 2019 8:59 pm
Cass takes the opportunity of the loosened embrace to withdraw enough to gasp for air.
May 17, 2019 9:01 pm
Alex lets go of Cass's shoulders, if only because the commander's been ripped from her grasp by an incomprehensible engineer. "Now, now," says Alex, reaching to pat Cass's retreating shoulder, but missing. She contemplates this moment of lack of coordination for a heartbeat, then turns back to Julia. "She doesn't get along very well with her father. That's what that's all about.
I'm sure she didn't really mean to yell at you,"
she says. "But you haven't answered my question yet! It's such a crazy coincidence that we're both here at the same time!"
May 17, 2019 10:21 pm
Julia watches the weird display of drunkenness in front of her, barely able to comprehend what is going on or what everyone is talking about. When Alex addresses her and draws her attention away from Cass' emotional outburst, she asks: "So you're saying you're not here because of me? It's just a coincidence?"
Her eyes wander over to Cass again and she adds: "I'm sorry I missed your message. I was under a lot of stress with my assignment here and confused by those spacefleet updates on you and I guess Maen distracted me when I wasn't busy... I should have checked in with you after what happened to you"
May 17, 2019 10:23 pm
Alex tilts her head, trying really hard to focus her eyes. "Maen?" The rest seems unimportant suddenly.
May 17, 2019 10:51 pm
Julia looks to the ground, then to her companions who have ordered drinks and removed themselves form this conversation by now. Then she turns her attention back to Alex.
"He is..." She hesitates for a moment. You get the distinct impression that she has been dreading this conversation. "He's my fiance. Look, can we talk about this when you're sober?"
May 17, 2019 11:22 pm
Alira enters the bar and has to struggle to move through the crowd. It's only a small place and it seems to be very popular. Stone, the tortoise like barkeeper is mixing drinks behind the bar, in front of the bar she spots Lt. Comm. Bruce, who had already been there earlier, talking with some other women. Lt. Comm. Borealis, who had also been there earlier is half sitting, half lying face down on a table, seemingly dozed off. She doesn't spot anyone who looks like a cadet right now but the place is very crowded, so it's impossible to be sure
May 17, 2019 11:33 pm
Lt. Commander Bruce. I am not sure if you remember me, my name is Alira. I am sorry to bother you, but I am trying to find a group of cadets. Have you seen any cadets here?

Alira is looking around the bar while speaking

Like a distant siren rapidly getting louder as it get closer, Cass' awareness of Alex's mood quickly increases when her posture and tone of voice change at the mention of Julia's fiance. She almost asks about it directly, then realizes that she shouldn't, especially since she can't quite figure out how to put together the question. Something is wrong here, but she's not sure exactly what.

It's scary. She almost always knows what's wrong when something's wrong. Or knows how to form the question, at least.

Just then, a young girl unfamiliar to Cass addresses Moira by rank and name, asking if she's seen any cadets in the bar. Cass hears the whole thing clearly because Moira still hasn't quite stopped hugging her, even though Cass has now turned around to watch the unfolding encounter between Alex and some girl. No, her daughter. Julia.

Cass can almost feel the light bulb igniting over her head. "I think she's a cadet," she declares to the new girl brightly. "Her name is Julia."
May 17, 2019 11:43 pm
"Suddenly, I find myself feeling remarkably sober," says Alex. Her voice sounds to her own ears as if it's coming from the end of a tunnel. Convenient that the other cadets found somewhere else to be, because by the stars, she needs a place to sit right now. She carefully makes her way to one of the stools and holds it steady while she sits. Or holds herself steady, more likely.

She stares back at her daughter, expressionless. "Your fiance. Wow."
May 18, 2019 12:03 am
Alira looks at the table pointed out. She moves a little closer.

Julia. Are you and your friends cadets? There are a bunch of people looking for you if you are. As far as I know, your superiors have not been notified yet. I wonder if you could step outside with me for a minute so we can clear this up?
May 18, 2019 12:08 am
Julia looks between Cass and Alira. "I don't know who it is you're looking for but it's not us. I'm an ensign."
Then, focusing again on Alex: "I thought you heard about it and that's why you came here."
May 18, 2019 12:21 am
Damn. Sorry to bother you. Please, if you see any cadets, tell them to go back to quarters.

Alira goes back to the door and the other thread to see what is going on.
May 18, 2019 4:22 am
Alex wears a stricken look as she responds to Julia. "How would I have heard about it? I've been held prisoner or staring down death at the hands of parasites for the last few weeks," she responds with sudden acidic sarcasm. This just makes her drop her head, the sudden movement making the rest of her body sway uncertainly in response and she grabs the bar top for stability. "I'm sorry... that wasn't fair. I just... maybe you're right. We should talk about this later."

Swallowing heavily, her face looking dangerously pale, she rises unsteadily to her feet. She still holds on to the bar top with one hand, but with the other, she reaches out to take Julia's hand. "Does he make you happy?"

Julia looks taken aback by Alex' sudden anger. She wants to say something to it but before she manages, Alex apologizes for it herself so Julia doesn't say anything about it.
Julia lets her mother take her hand without resisting. "He does. He really does", she says. She pulls her hand back after a moment.
Her eyes wander back to Cass and she's quiet for a moment. Then she asks Alex: "And, you two, are you together now?"
May 18, 2019 9:00 am
Watching Alex and Julia, Cass notes the tension between them and Alex's clearly yo-yoing emotions. It's such a shame, she thinks, for a rift to be present between a parent and child - especially when one party has recently come so close to losing the other, even if they weren't aware of it.

Awareness, Cass thinks, is the key. It's weird that Julia didn't immediately try to contact Alex when Spacefleet's news about her disappearance and subsequent rescue came through, but it's her lack of a thorough understanding of just what her mother has been through that is the root of their current problem. If only Julia had listened to Alex's comm, none of this would be...

"That's it!" she cries, breaking free of Moira's still-persistent hug and moving to stand between Alex and her daughter.

"I know what we need to do to fix this," she says to them, gesturing intently with her hands. It's very important that they listen to the plan and fully grasp all its nuances. To Alex, she says, "All we have to do is play your comm. For Julia. Right now. Then, see, then... she can hear it." She spreads her hands, palms up, to underscore how obvious a solution this is. To Julia: "Then you'll know what it says, right? And you'll understand the whole thing. And it will make all of this a lot better. And then... then... Hey, is this floor moving?"

The room abruptly tilts, catching Cass off-guard and throwing her against the bar. Looking at Alex, she says, puzzled, "Are we under attack?" and then slides down the side of the bar until her butt makes contact with the floor.

"I think I'll sit down."
May 18, 2019 1:27 pm
Moira has been starting at Julia and Alex with the same expression a small child uses when they see a bunny rabbit for the first time.

Yer gittin MAH-reed! Oi, Alex, wut good noos! Con----congrady----congradulo----- Wee're soo hapee fer yoo!

She tries to smack the bar and misses. Stone smirks. He's used to this. It's been a while, but he's used to this.

Stoon, ah roond ah lyon byle fer all'ah us! Cept tha soober ones. Dunnae woory, Tynee Alex, Cass ain't with yer mah. She had tha hots fer our fish dokter an' he's off tha ship fer a while. Thoo maybee she swings booth ways. Ah dunno. Ah haven't tried ta find oot! She's too young fer me. An ah dunna swing booth ways. Ah dunno. Ah haven't tried ta find oot!

She lets out a hearty laugh. in her fanny pack she tried to fish out her datapad. The engineer can't help but keep some things on her at all times. She fumbles with it before passing it to Julia.

Ah, Lass, yoo knoo how ta work one 'a thees. Jes' sign in an' listen ta yer mah an' then ah'll byy yeh a roond!
May 18, 2019 1:52 pm
Julia laughs politely whenever Moira is laughing but you all get the distinct feeling she didn't understand half of what was said. She is definitely lacking practice in understanding Moira-talk.
She takes the datapad and looks at Alex. It's unclear whether she's asking for permission or for a translation.

Stone comes up and raises one of his massive, hairless eyebrows at Moira's order. "Lion Bile, huh? Not the most popular drink around here but if you want your night to end already, I'll pour you some."
May 18, 2019 5:01 pm
Ah meen, we dunnae hafta drinkit yet, but in mah experrrrrr.......yeers ah knoo tha moore ossifers en tha room tha better chance we’ll need ta soober up! Soo ah guess jes keep et handee good manturtle.
May 19, 2019 4:45 am
Julia's question regarding her mother's romantic inclinations goes unanswered -- at least, by Alex herself. Maybe a translator might be able to make heads or tails of Moira's explanation. She's putting her hand over the datapad, to forestall Julia from listening to the comm right now, when Cass plops to the ground. "Oh! Cass! Oh my goodness!"

She stands up from her barstool much too quickly, and the room lurches. "Oh no..." she says in a tiny, faraway voice, and her knees turn to jelly. Soon, she's sitting down next to Cass and breaking into a fit of giggles. "We... are very... very..." Uh oh, words are going again. She plonks her head back against the bar as if to jog the words loose again. "...drunk! We are drunk. And a complete and total mesh. Mesh? Yes, total mesh."
May 19, 2019 7:44 am
"Listen, Mom, it looks like you're having a lot of fun at the moment and I'm not drunk enough to deal with this right now. Maybe we should just talk tomorrow." Julia smiles awkwardly at Moira and Cass. "It was nice meeting you two. I'm sure we'll talk again while you're here."
May 19, 2019 6:42 pm
Cass is still trying to understand why the building had tilted. That's usually the sort of thing you experience on a ship, not in a bar on an island. Perhaps it was a hurricane, lifting the bar from its foundation and... no, no one else seems to have been affected.

That's when Alex lands next to her. Okay, but still, just the two of them seem to be experiencing any effect.

Maybe they are now in the eye of the storm and the building has stabilized.

Alex begins to giggle, and Cass can't help but join in, because giggling is really a lot of fun. She should do it more often. Could be a good stress reliever.

When Julia says what seems to be a goodbye for now, Cass waves at her with a smile, then turns to Alex. "You know, we should go back to our cottages before the rest of the hurricane hits." Struggling to her feet, she grips the bar with one hand and helps Alex up with the other. Leading Alex by the hand, walks them toward the door, stopping to say to Moira, "I'd get to shelter before we're through the eye," then weaving their way out of the bar and onto the street.

"Tomorrow!" Alex calls to Julia as Cass drags her toward the door. "Lunch!" She stumbles and has to grab on to Cass's arm more tightly. "Whoops!"

In a moment of clear thought and foresight, she adds, "I don't think I'm going to be able to manage breakfast, after all."

As she is led out the door, Alex can be heard saying, "Which cottage is mine? Do you remember?"
May 20, 2019 3:39 am
Once they are outside of the bar, Cass stops and looks around. There's the usual fragrant sea breeze, but the skies are clear and filled with stars. But she's already forgotten about hurricanes anyway.

She turns to Alex, careful not to overbalance herself. "Sure, you're in cottage 32. It's this way." She points and leads the way.
May 20, 2019 4:02 am
Resting one arm across Cass's shoulder, Alex looks up at the stars. "I miss them already," she says, as though muffled by a pillow. "The..."

"Stars."

"Can't get married. Too many stars to see still," she murmurs. "So many."
May 20, 2019 4:13 am
As they walk down the street, Cass looks up at the stars again. "I don't think we can see all of them. A lot, though." They walk for a while in silence, then Cass suddenly remembers something. "Wait - who's getting married?"
May 20, 2019 4:41 am
Cass and Alex leave so abruptly that they just leave Moira, Zephyr and Julia behind. They make their way to the cottages, past the huge metal box at the entrance of the village. There are some people walking around in the village but it's very quiet compared to the bar area.
OOC:
One of you give me a Feelings roll to find your cottages in your current state. No expert or prepared but an extra die for help
May 20, 2019 4:51 am
As Cass and Alex reach an intersection in the pathways through the cottages, Alex pauses, staring through slitted eyes around at the landmarks cheerfully tilting and swaying as though dancing to some unheard music. "I think it's... that way."

She points to the right.

After a brief moment's thought, she waves her hands demonstratively. "No no no. Your cottage is this way."

She points instead to the left.

Rolls

Feelings with help - (1d6, 1d6)

1d6 : (2) = 2

1d6 : (3) = 3

May 20, 2019 5:10 am
You keep going and after a moment, you reach your cottages. All cottages of the Potential bridge crew are right next to each other as you booked at the same time. Only Darcy is staying in a different part of the village for some reason.
Despite your drunken state, you notice something odd. Zephyr was still sleeping at the table in Stone's bar and there was no way really for him to get ahead of you without you noticing. Despite this, the light in one room in his cottage are turned on.
May 20, 2019 5:19 am
Cass stands staring at the cottage with the light on in one room. "Hey... I think that's, um..." She rubs her eyes, as though they contain a memory-enhancement switch. Snapping her fingers sluggishly, she says, "Zephyr! That's Zeph's cottage. Wasn't he still at the bar when we left?"
May 20, 2019 5:32 am
"Either he is very, very fast, or he's got a visitor," says Alex, trying and failing to focus on the cottage. "Maybe he has a daughter that's avoiding him too! Something else we have in common!"
May 20, 2019 5:41 am
A tingle runs down Cass' spine and she feels noticeably more sober. Not actually sober, just... closer to that end of the spectrum. She moves closer to the cottage to see if she can see anyone through the window of the lighted room.
May 20, 2019 6:27 am
She sneaks up to the cottage and notices that the electronic lock at the front door has been disabled and then the door has been opened manually. Probably not the way Zephyr would enter.
As Cass looks through the window, you see that there's some dishes with remains of food on them - some rice dish - and a half-empty glass with a clear liquid sitting on the couch table. On the couch itself she sees a woman sleeping. She's skinny with dark hair, definitely too old to be Zephyr's daughter like Alex suggested, as she appears to be around his age. Cass has never seen her before.
May 20, 2019 6:39 am
Cass turns to Alex. "Some woman seems to have broken into Zeph's cottage. Doesn't look young enough to be a daughter. Well, not Zephyr's, anyway." She slaps her comm badge. "Cassano to security. Send..." It takes her that long to remember that she doesn't actually have a comm badge to slap.

Sighing and rubbing her face with both hands, she makes a decision, because that's what captains do. "Go to your cottage and send a comm to resort security," she tells Alex, then goes to the front door and slides it open to walk into the cottage.
May 20, 2019 6:46 am
Cass enters the cottage. The front door leads into a tiny hallway which in turn has a door that leads to the main room that she saw into through the window. The door to that room is open but she can't see the couch from this angle.
May 20, 2019 6:50 am
Cass moves more slowly as she approaches the open door to the main room, continuing until she can see the woman who was lying on the couch.
May 20, 2019 6:55 am
Cass sneaks closer to the door until she can see the couch. It's empty. Whoever it was that was sleeping on the couch must be a very light sleeper. This experience is sobering Cass up almost as fast as Moira's Lion Bile would have.
Cass can hear light breathing from the other side of the door, close to the wall.
May 20, 2019 7:03 am
Cass waits motionless for a moment, listening to the breathing. Now that her head's a little clearer, it occurs to her that it's pretty weird that a home invader - well, resort cottage invader - sat around eating a meal and then napping on the couch with the light on. Still, that doesn't mean this situation can't be dangerous.

"Security!" she barks. "Come out with your hands up!"
May 20, 2019 7:09 am
There is a long pause. Finally, you get a reply. A woman's voice says: "This is my cottage and I've done nothing wrong. You have no right to just come in here"
May 20, 2019 7:21 am
Cass almost laughs at this response. "This cottage is occupied by a Lt. Commander Zephyr Borealis, and we know you are not him. Now step out with your hands up!"
May 20, 2019 7:24 am
"And I am Lt. Commander Zephyr Borealis' personal guest. Now either piss off or come in and shoot me but if you do that, he might do the same to you."
May 20, 2019 7:29 am
Cass relaxes slightly. This is sounding less and less like a dangerous situation. She maintains her guard but drops the "security" voice. "A personal guest wouldn't have to break into the cottage. And I seriously doubt that Zeph will shoot his commanding officer."
May 20, 2019 7:43 am
"He might. He's done dumber things for me." You can hear that the woman's voice seems to have relaxed slightly as well now but she still doesn't show herself. "And I'm sure he would have invited me in but he wasn't home, so I decided to wait for him."
May 20, 2019 7:47 am
Cass sighs. "Look, this is great fun, but I'm really not in the mood for cloak and dagger tonight. Step into the doorway so I can see you're not about to club me or shoot me with a phaser, and then we can have a friendly chat."
May 20, 2019 8:05 am
After a short moment, the woman steps into the doorway. She has a knife in her hand but it's not raised. She's a little bit taller than you but very skinny to the point where it doesn't seem healthy anymore.
"You must be Cassano then. I thought you'd be prettier." She gestures towards the couch. "Come in, grab another drink. Smells like you've had a couple already."
May 20, 2019 8:10 am
Cass enters the room, sitting on a chair rather than the couch. "Yes, I've been enjoying a much-needed shore leave." She waves off another drink. "So who are you? Let's not play any more games or I'll call the actual security." She smiles pleasantly.

"I'm Vega", she replies, as if that answers your question. "Where's Zeph? If you let him know I'm here, he'll tell you it's fine."
May 20, 2019 8:17 am
"And how does Zeph know you, Vega?"
May 20, 2019 8:26 am
Vega sits down on the couch and puts the knife down on the table. Cass notices a small, unlabeled bottle of pills on the table next to the drink and food. "Honestly, that's none of your business."
May 20, 2019 11:56 am
At the bar

Moira sniffs the Lion Bile and cringes, not daring to take a full sip yet. She slaps her cheeks a few times like a strange drum solo and sits down, offering Julia and her compatriots a seat.

Soo. Alex is yer mah an' yer gettin' married soon. Sounds like a wylde ryde. Yeh'll hafta fergive us drunks. We jest got done with ah new ferst contact with a race that started hostile. Like, real hostile. Almost killed Zeph here. An' they held yer mah hostage, too. Ah'm guessin that's what tha noot's aboot. Yeh don't hafta listen ta it here if yeh want it ta be private. But yer mah's a great ossifer under pressure. Why were yeh lookin fer her anyway? Jes tha weddin'?
May 20, 2019 12:06 pm
Julia sits down with Moira, the people she came in with have withdrawn from the whole conversation some time ago and are talking to each other as well as other patrons of the bar.
Now that the chaos seems to have subsided a bit after her mother and Cass have stormed out, Julia seems to calm down a bit and to be able to better focus on Moira and understand her.
"I wasn't actually looking for her. I didn't even know she would be here. I'm stationed here, Junior Operations Officer in one of the environmental control centers on the island. Maen put in a word for me and helped me get the position here right after I graduated." She looks a bit embarrassed about admitting that she had help in getting her assignment. "But if I had known what she went through... Those messages just flew past me."
May 20, 2019 12:18 pm
Ah, a techie! Ah'm an engineer mahself. Thoo ah'm workin' on counsalin'. She doesn't flinch when Julia references her connection. Part of Spacefleet is who you know. Moira puts a hand on Julia's shoulder. Lestin, Lass. Et happens. Mah pa went ta tha hospital an' ah missed et cuz' of a bad line 'a cood in tha message. But! Yer mah's alive, an' fine. Yeh can pick things up from here. She smiles encouragingly, though it still looks a bit ghoulish with the booze in her system, and rests her head on her hands.

SoooooOOOOOOoooooo. Maen, eh?
May 20, 2019 3:32 pm
Julia leans slightly away from Moira. That woman is acting very familiar, considering they've just met a few minutes ago.
"Yes, Maen. Actually, for you it would be Theliak. He's Farredan, they're very particular about their names.", Julia explains. "He came to the Academy to speak to my professor about a project of his. He's a very interesting man and not just because of his biology." Although she's still a bit hesitant to speak to Moira about her personal matters, the engineer notices her eyes light up with excitement when she speaks about her fiance.

May 20, 2019 4:01 pm
"Speaking of brains and possible organ failure: Your friend there" She gestures towards Zephyr. "He's had a lot to drink it looks like. Maybe you should take him to his quarters to rest."
She finished the drink in her hand and gets up from the chair. "It was nice meeting you... I don't think I caught your name actually, I'm sorry. We should get together to talk again some other time."
May 20, 2019 4:11 pm
The sudden seriousness is a bit of a slap across the face, waking Alex up enough for her to follow the order. Some things, no matter how drunk you are, are so ingrained that you simply just do them.

She's three quick steps toward her cottage before she even realizes what she's doing.

Wisdom and training win out over curiosity and mischief, and Alex continues on to her own cottage with only a few missteps and wobbles along the way. She opens the comm to resort security. "Security, we have an intruder in..." she begins, realizing that for the life of her she can't remember the cottage number, and swearing under her breath. "Lt. Commander Borealis's cottage. Please send someone to check it out as soon as possible. Commander Shawna Cassano is on site and checking it out. She is not the intruder."
May 20, 2019 4:17 pm
At the bar

She stands and shakes her hand. Lieutenant Commander Moira Bruce, USS Potential. Fer disaster. She snickers, remembering her song. But she looks at Zephyr and sighs. Ah hope ta talk ta yeh soon, Ensign Julia Lloyd - fer- a- bit - longer.

She winks at Stone and downs the shot he passed her. She lets out (amusingly enough) a lion-like groan and flops her head on the table. Now sober, but head-throbbing, she gives a weak smile to Stone.

This has gotten me out of quite a bit a' trouble, in years past friend. But it still sucks. Thank yeh. She nudges Zephyr. Oi. Zeph. Zephyr. Lieutenant Commander. She squares up her tab, throws him over her shoulder (the thump makes her head hurt), and heads out. She chats pleasantly with him along the way, figuring he'll respond eventually.

Alex

Alex rushed into the house to the communicator without even thinking. Now that she's come to a stop, she suddenly realizes something she must have seen but not noticed during her hurrying. At the entrance to her cottage, leaning against the door, was a white envelope that had not been there when she had left her cottage earlier.
"Understood, ma'am. Can you give us your name, please? And if at all possible without putting yourself in danger, get Commander Cassano out of the building. Our people will handle it."
May 20, 2019 4:30 pm
bowlofspinach says:
Vega sits down on the couch and puts the knife down on the table. Cass notices a small, unlabeled bottle of pills on the table next to the drink and food. "Honestly, that's none of your business."
Cass sits back in her chair and crosses her legs. "Well, considering that you broke into the cottage of my crew member and personal friend, I'm taking vetting you and your story pretty seriously. So, again, if you don't want me to call security on you, I suggest you answer my questions. Now, how do you know Zephyr?"
May 20, 2019 4:46 pm
Cass

"Has it ever occurred to you that there are parts about Zeph's life that he doesn't want his commanding officer to know? What do you think why he's never mentioned me?" Vega sighs loudly, as if she's explaining something simple to a child who just won't understand. "Now, just go along to your cottage and have some more of those drinks from your replicator until you pass out. Looks like you're good at that. I'll wait here for Zeph."
May 20, 2019 5:05 pm
"Lt. Commander Alexandra Lloyd," replies Alex, all the while looking at the curious envelope with narrowed eyes. "I will do that. And thank you."

As she exits her cottage, she scoops up the envelope, taking a brief look at the outside for any distinguishing marks or writing, and finds her name written on the outside. Lifting an eyebrow skeptically, she folds it and puts it in her pocket for later study. As she starts back toward her door and eventually Zephyr's cottage, she stops, holding a hand to her stomach. "I really should've taken Moira up on that Lion's Bile or whatever it was she called it..."

Suddenly, she turns on a heel and hurries into the bathroom, where she is noisily sick.
May 20, 2019 5:29 pm
Cass heaves a sigh and shakes her head, gazing around the room. It looks casual, but she's looking for anything she might be able to use as a weapon if Vega decides to escalate this confrontation. "I'm not trying to pry into Zeph's life, and I'm not going anywhere. I'm not letting him walk into this cottage to encounter an intruder alone."
May 20, 2019 5:36 pm
Alex reemerges, pale but less wobbly. Giving her head a shake to try and clear it further, she exits the cottage and returns to where she left Cass. She wears a resolute look, but doesn't appear particularly worried, and while she moves quickly, it's not a run either. Luckily, it's only a short distance to the other cottage, and she's soon near the window that they spied the intruder through earlier. Seeing Cass in conversation with this strange woman, Alex frowns, watching for a moment while deciding how to introduce herself into the situation.
May 20, 2019 5:45 pm
Cass, Alex

"Then wait here with me, if you need Zeph to tell you personally to get lost." She leans back on the couch, making a show out of getting comfortable. "By all means, get something from the replicator."
She doesn't notice Alex at the window.

Cass could reach for the knife. It's closer to Vega than to her but she could manage to get it first. There is also a glass vase behind you that you could use as a blunt weapon. Moira finds it odd to see four jogging security officers at this hour, but she realizes that hauling an officer fireman-style who had been taken hostage less than a month before might be considered poor form. She gently sits him down by a palm tree and pops her earbuds over his ears.

And blasts "Scotland the Brave."

Oi! Zeph! Are yeh dead?

Alex moves to a window that should put her in line of sight to Cass. When the other woman in the room isn't looking, Alex waves her arms, hoping to snag Cass's attention, but either it's too dark or Cass is still suffering some degree of sensory impairment, or some such issue. When her animated waving does no good, Alex moves around to the door again and signals it to open.

"Zephyr? Are you back yet? Anyone..." she calls, and makes a show of being surprised to find two women here and no Zephyr.

"Cass? Where's Zephyr?" she says, frowning slightly. "And who's this?"

OOC:
Zeph can wake up whenever kona has time. You didn't notice anything too strange about them. One of them was carrying a phaser which you haven't seen yet on the resort but other than that, they looked like normal guards.
Alex, Cass

Vega immediately tenses up when Alex enters. Her hand instinctively flinches toward the knife but she stops herself before she reaches it.
She takes a second to compose herself and to put on her smug smile again. "Oh, are we having a house party? Zeph will be delighted when he comes home and finds his house full of attractive women. He's such a ladies' man, isn't he?"
May 20, 2019 6:39 pm
Cass plays along with Alex's fiction. "Oh, hi, Alex. Meet the mysterious Vega, who broke into Zephyr's cottage and refuses to answer any questions. Vega, this is another ship mate and friend of Zephyr's, Lt. Commander Lloyd."
May 20, 2019 6:45 pm
Vega shifts her weight slightly and her eyes dart around the room quickly for a moment as if she's trying to figure out her position with you two around. She's trying to hide it but she's getting uncomfortable. "Well, by all means, come in then, Lt. Commander Lloyd. Take a refreshment from the replicator while we wait for Zephyr. Maybe a small midnight snack?"
May 20, 2019 6:47 pm
"She keeps trying to get me to that replicator," Cass says. "She's awfully free with Zephyr's hospitality, isn't she?"
May 20, 2019 6:49 pm
"I'm known to be very generous", Vega responds in a dry tone of voice
May 20, 2019 7:06 pm
I am never getting to bed

I'm sorry, but is everything ok? Did I hear you say your friend is dead? Do you need medical help?
May 20, 2019 7:16 pm
"Attractive women?" parrots Alex, and touches a hand lightly to her chest, affecting a shy smile. "What a dear you are! She's sweet, Commander."

She sits in a comfortable chair next to Vega, turning to look at her with her elbow propped on the chair arm and her chin cupped in her hand. "Thank you for the offer of a snack, but... I'm afraid I just couldn't eat anything right now. You're a friend of Zephyr's? I'm sad to say I haven't known him long enough to have heard of you, but I'm sure that's just an oversight on his part. How he could've forgotten to mention such a delightful acquaintance, I have no idea." She rolls her eyes dramatically. "Men, right?"

Her entire expression is one of rapt attention as she chats up Vega, but she's also looking the woman over, gleaning what information she can.
OOC:

Before Vega can respond, Alex's eyes light up, and she covers her mouth with her hand in a show of surprise. "Wait..." She waves the hand covering her mouth at Vega and gives her a sly sidelong look. "You're related to him, aren't you? You've got that same saucy look in your eyes that he does!" She taps her lips with one finger. "I'm guessing... cousin?"

Zeph! We’re at - she pops the earbuds off. The faint victorious sound of a bagpipe’s wail can still be heard. Zeph! We’re outside. Yer wasted. Ah’m hungover. This is Alira. How do yeh feel? She smirks, then sees his feet.

Zephyr looks around confused for a second after the earbuds pop out. He grins at Moira and Alira sheepishly.

Yeah, let's head back.

Alira gets her shoulder under Zephyrs arm pit and stands him up.

Lead the way Moira, I got him.
May 21, 2019 4:27 am
Moira, Alira, Zephyr

Moira and Alira both support Zephyr as they walk back towards their cottages. The streets are empty, except for one small group that is standing at a corner already very close to your destination and hectically whispering amongst each other. They initially don't pay much attention to your group but once you get closer to pass them they turn to look at you and greet you with a nod before resuming their conversation.

Cass, Alex

Vega repositions herself again. While she is still trying to make it look like she is relaxed and calm, her new posture will allow her to jump up from the couch quickly and without delay if she wants to.
"You actually called security on me? And I though Zeph would be the biggest fool on your ship"
The security team slowly moves in towards the cottage, two heading towards the front door, one to the window to the street and the last towards the back door.
Before they get into positions, Vega jumps up from the couch and attempts to run towards the door that leads to the back exit.
May 21, 2019 4:57 am
Cass is expecting Vega to bolt, so she jumps at pretty much the same time. "Back door!" she shouts for the benefit of the security officers and seeks to intercept her, tackling her if necessary.

Catching her is easier than she expected and, underestimating how light Vega actually is, she falls to the ground with Cass when she is tackled, giving Cass a good grip on her that she should not be able to escape from easily.
One security guard reaches the window and sees the situation inside from there. He yells something to his partners and a second later, you hear a shout at the door. "Resort Security. We have been informed of a break in at this cottage. We are coming in. If you are holding any weapons, please drop them to the ground now or we will be forced to stun you."
May 21, 2019 5:10 am
"We have no weapons. I have the intruder in custody on the floor. No stunning should be necessary."
May 21, 2019 5:20 am
Vega does not resist your grip on her. Cass, you are on the floor, almost face to face with her. She grins at you and then, as soon as you finish your sentence, she out of nowhere begins hyperventilating and her eyes tear up. Exactly when the two security guards enter the room, she sobs "Help"
May 21, 2019 5:28 am
Alex rolls her eyes. "Clever act."

She stands up and approaches the security guards. "Good evening, officers. I'm Lt. Commander Alexandra Lloyd, and I called in the situation. Ms. Vega here," she says, indicating the woman Cass has tackled to the floor, "was just trying to leave before you could speak with her. Commander Cassano very effectively stopped her retreat. Now that you're here, hopefully you can take over."

The guards look a bit confused and uncertain on what to do. They look at the one at the window who shrugs in response.
Finally after a few seconds, the security officer with the phaser, which is still in its holster, says calmly: "Okay, everyone just get up slowly, show me that you're not armed. We'll talk this over and find out what's wrong. Does anyone have a problem with that?"
May 21, 2019 5:42 am
"No problem here," Cass says. Slowly, she releases her grip on Vega, raises her hands to show they are empty, and gets to her feet. "Lt. Commander Lloyd and I were going to our cottages when we noticed a light on in our shipmate's cottage. The lock had been tampered with. I came inside to check things out and found this woman here. She says she's my crewman's sister."
May 21, 2019 5:54 am
Vega makes a big show out of wiping the tears from her eyes and calming down. "My brother lives here. I was asleep and waiting for him to come home when these two women came in and started threatening me." She rises to her feet slowly and shows the officers her empty hands.

The officer with the phaser looks at all of you in turn. He doesn't seem to buy her story, considering that Alex was the one to call security in the first place. His partner on the other hand appears to be falling for her damsel in distress act, judging by the expression of sympathy on his face. Vega seems to notice as well and smiles coyly at him.

The officer with the phaser says: "We will sort this out. Does anyone know where Mr. Borealis is at the moment or how we can contact him? It seems that we should question him as well."
May 21, 2019 5:58 am
Did you say that we are headed there? Where security seem to have the building surrounded? Maybe we better get there and see what's the hubbub
May 21, 2019 6:01 am
"Yes, we left him maybe thirty minutes ago at the Stoneshell Pub. We're all here on shore leave. He might be... a little the worse for wear."
May 21, 2019 6:20 am
Moira, Alira, Zephyr

You can see that there is some commotion where you are going. There is one security officer on the street keeping people from going towards one house, not that anyone is trying. A few people have come out onto the street, wondering what's going on. Moira and Zeph recognize that this is Zephyr's cottage, Alira only knows that it is three houses down from hers.

Alex, Cass

The officer with the phaser turns towards the window and looks out on the street. "There's no need to make a big deal out of this, I hope. Just, everyone sit down, I'll send someone to look for Mr. Borealis and this will.be cleared up in no time."
He gestures toward the couch and chairs in the room and, when he notices the knife on the table, raises an eyebrow and takes it. He hits his commbadge and explains Zephyr's location into it and asks for someone to escort him to his cottage.
May 21, 2019 6:28 am
OOC:
Ask and ye shall receive.
We make our way to the security guard outside the house.

Hello there. I am Alira Vitan and this gentleman is the person assigned to the house you seem to be guarding.
Do you mind if we ask what's going on?
May 21, 2019 8:42 am
The security officer looks at Alira, Moira and Zephyr. "You are Mr. Borealis? We were just about to go look for you. Someone broke into your cottage, apparently. There's some confusion so maybe just come in. There shouldn't be any danger."
He speaks something into his communicator. It's standard spacefleet equipment but the voice output has been quieted down so people around won't hear what is being said. Then he leads the three inside. The front door appears to be broken as it doesn't open or close. It's just standing still, about 75% opened.

A security officer enters the room. Behind him are Zeph, Moira and Alira. Vega is looking at the one security guard who already seems to have made up his mind to be on her side with big, innocent eyes.
The officer with the phaser, who seems to be in charge of this operation, turns to look at the new arrivals. The guard from the outside explains who they are.

"Well, looks like we got lucky. Mr. Borealis, we have been called by Mrs. Lloyd about a break-in at your place. This woman, who claims to be your sister, apparently disabled the door and broke in. She says that she is your guest. Can you verify for us whether she has the permission to be here?" He pauses and sighs. "And there's also the issue that these two broke into your house as well, with good intentions, it appears, but still. It's your cottage so we need to hear from you before we decide how to proceed."
May 21, 2019 6:23 pm
Zephyr stands in the doorway, stunned. Sobriety rushes over him, and any trace of gaiety has gone from his eyes. He locks his gaze with Vega for a moment, and then turns to the security officers.

I apologize for the confusion sir. These women are my guests. We have no need for your assistance.

Zephyr then steps back to the door of his cottage and opens it congenially. He smiles at them and says, If we require further assistance I will let you know.

Those who are watching closely likely notice a quick sideways glance from him in Vega's direction, and then a smile returns to his face when he looks back at the officers.

The officers exchange some looks, then the one in charge says: "We'll drop it this time but try not to let something like this happen again. We're already very busy tonight." He turns to leave, sees the broken door and says: "We'll send someone to fix this in the morning. You or your guests will have to pay for the damage, however."
With that said, they leave and only you six are left behind.
As soon as the security team is out the door, Vega drops her act of being innocent and scared.
"It was so much fun meeting all of you ladies but Zeph and I have important things to discuss", Vega announces with a smile. "I'm sure another time we can all sit together another time and I'll tell you all about the time little Zeph crashed his bike on purpose to impress the neighbors' daughter. But now get lost."
May 21, 2019 6:47 pm
Zephyr looks mildly agitated for a moment, but casts his eyes down to the ground, exhales, and nods. He then looks up, particularly at Cass, and gives her a slight nod with a flat smile while remaining by the door.

A moment please. I will fill you in.
May 21, 2019 6:51 pm
Well, it was...let's say pleasant and let it go at that. It's been pleasant sort of meeting you all, but I have to meet someone tomorrow and need some sleep.

Alira heads for the door and then her rental.
May 21, 2019 6:52 pm
Ignoring Vega completely, Cass looks to Zephyr. She's looking for him to indicate whether he wants her and Alex to stay or go. When he eventually indicates that he's okay and would like some time alone with his sister, Cass says to Alex, "That's our cue. Zeph, if you need anything, you know where to find us." Then she leaves the cottage.

Everyone who's not Zephyr leaves the cottage together. You can resume your conversation on the street or go to sleep, whatever you prefer.

Zeph:
Vega gets up and closes the front door manually behind the others, then comes back into the living room. She looks through the window to make sure nobody is listening in, then she says: "I need your help, little brother. You know the story. You take a shady job offer, your cargo gets destroyed in a pirate attack and suddenly your boss is looking to kill you unless you can pay him back for the loss."
May 21, 2019 7:25 pm
"What isn't going on here?" says Alex dryly as they walk, trying to keep from moving too quickly or speaking too loudly. Adrenaline now gone, the spinning, whirling feeling is back. "My daughter's here, Zephyr's big sister is here... I feel like we're having the Consortium's most awkward family reunion."

She puts a hand lightly on Cass's arm with a lopsided smile. "It all started out so lovely. Except maybe for my belly flop. That was just awkward."
May 21, 2019 7:27 pm
I'd ask how you found me, but I'm sure I don't want to know.

Zephyr heads to his kitchen, seemingly ignoring the request, makes himself a tall glass of water, and chugs the contents all in one go. He then steps into another room momentarily and returns with what appears to be some sort of clear bag of fluid with a small clear hose attached to it.

Why do you always do this Vega? I told you last time I was not going to bail you out again, but here you are.

He then sits down across from her, opens a small case, and connects a needle to the hose. When he slides the needle into his arm it becomes apparent that this is some sort of rudimentary intravenous therapy.

Also, if you want my help, you may want to stop referring to me as 'little brother.' You know I was first.

She lies down on the couch, putting her feet onto the armrest on one side, then takes the glass from the table and drinks some of it. "And you owe me, Zeph. I know, you've helped me a couple of times already but I promise this is the last time. And if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't even be in this mess."

A light goes on -- flickering, dimmer than usual, but a light nonetheless -- in Alex's eyes. "Oh, that reminds me. There was an envelope at my cottage..."

She pats herself, as though trying to remember where her pockets are. Finally, she brightens again and pulls out the envelope, opening it up to take a look at the contents.
May 21, 2019 8:41 pm
Cass looks over Alex's shoulder, looking on as she opens the envelope.
May 21, 2019 8:46 pm
It's a short letter in handwriting that looks like someone put effort in to make it look nice but it's not really that nice. As you read it, you realize it is an invitation to a barbecue the next evening. It lists a time and a cottage number which you recognize as the number that Darcy is staying at, away from the rest of the Potential crew's cottages. It is signed "Cassandra"

Cass, when you arrive at your cottage, you find a letter in front of your door as well. It has the name "Shawna Cassano" written on the front and when you open and read it, it's the same letter as the one Alex got.
Moira, when you go to your cottage, you find the same letter, only addressed to "Moira Bruce" instead
May 21, 2019 8:52 pm
Cass glances at the invitation, since she's already read Alex's, and tosses it aside with a thoughtful frown. It's really not like Darcy to throw a party. For a moment, Cass wonders exactly what's going on - what Darcy is really up to. Then she shakes her head at her paranoia. So the woman finally decided to grow a social life; what's wrong with that? It will probably make things more comfortable on the Potential is Darcy could let her human side show a little more often.

Cass stays up long enough to drink a couple of glasses of water, brush her teeth, and strip off her clothes before passing out into a deep sleep.

Vega watches Zephyr. "What's this supposed to be? Have you forgotten that I'm the sick one?"
I'm hydrating. Before you came along I was busy imbibing in some wonderful Irish handcuffs. I haven't let myself go for quite some time. Now that you're here, there's no time for joviality. I'm sure at any moment we'll get some unwanted visitor crashing through my door, and I'll have to intervene.

Zephyr looks annoyed, but also tired. Not just physically tired, but weary. Weary of the discussion that has only just begun.

And how was I responsible for your mess this time? Did I gamble away the money I gave you on Cortegus Prime? Or perhaps when I called in that favor to have the weapons infringement expunged. That was definitely my mistake.

Cass walks into Stone's with Moira, Nic, and Max. It's a lot less crowded than it had been the night before - at least, to the best of Cass' recollection. She doesn't remember a lot of the details from her previous visit, which is a little embarrassing. She hasn't been that drunk in a long time. Actually, not since the last time she and Nic had met up during mutual shore leaves a few years ago.

Stone waves to them and gestures that they should sit wherever they want. As they move past a particular table, she has a flash of a memory of standing on top of it. No, not standing. Dancing on it.

She glances at Moira, wondering how much she recalls from last night's festivities. Cass really hopes she won't bring it up in front of Max. It would seem inappropriate for him to hear about his new commanding officer getting hammered when they'd only just met.
May 24, 2019 4:37 pm
Moira winks at Cass. It's clear that she's a coherent drunk, but she also knows that telling Max would be poor protocol.
May 24, 2019 4:50 pm
Cass acknowledges Moira's wink with a smile and a slight nod as she slips into a booth. She touches a keypad on the table and the lunch menu pops up in a holographic heads-up display, including a list of exotic cocktails. She wonders just how many of those she sampled last night.

"What's everyone feel like drinking today? Iced Velissian tea sounds good to me."
May 24, 2019 4:55 pm
Ooooooh with a mango shot. Haven't had one 'a those in ages.
May 24, 2019 4:56 pm
Cass looks at her uncertainly. "It is non-alcoholic... right?"
May 24, 2019 4:58 pm
She laughs.

Yes, yes, of course. Yeh can make it alcoholic, of course. But standard is clean. Just don't call it a "Spiky" Iced Velissian tea.
May 24, 2019 5:11 pm
"So, spikeys for everyone then?", Nic suggests. "What are you having to eat, Max? Anything specific in mind?"
Max is looking at the menu with unsure eyes. "This is a bar but they're definitely not putting alcohol in their foods, right?"
May 24, 2019 5:18 pm
"No spiky for me," Cass says absently, perusing the food menu. "And no, Max, there won't be alcohol in the food. Sometimes people cook with it, but that's for flavor. The alcohol gets burned away during the cooking. Usually, at least."
May 24, 2019 5:37 pm
"Good...", Max says. "I guess I'll have the fish then. We used to go fishing on Ta'al all the time. Although there's no real fish there at least not what you would call fish. They're more like snakes, or lizards I guess. If you ever get the chance to eat a Morahk, definitely try it. And I guess I will also have one of those iced teas. I've never had one of those."
May 24, 2019 5:41 pm
Uncertain what to say in response to all of that, Cass simply smiles and nods, waving to Stone to indicate they are ready to order.
May 24, 2019 5:51 pm
Stone comes up the table. There's not much business at the bar so he is walking slowly and taking his time. "What can I bring you all?", he asks. Then, looking at Cass, he adds: "You're pretty tough. After last night, I didnt expect you to leave your cottage at all today. No wonder RC likes you."
Nic looks at Cass with a smirk on his face. He doesn't say anything but his expression speaks volumes.
May 24, 2019 5:55 pm
Ignoring Nic, Cass laughs politely and says, "Well, you're not the first to underestimate my stamina." Gesturing toward the menu, she adds, "So tell us - what's good today?"
May 24, 2019 6:52 pm
"Everything is always good here. Otherwise, I wouldn't serve it. I can see in RC's eyes that she's in her burger mood today. I have to warn you, this is not really a restaurant so our food selection is a bit limited but we offer some variety. Fish, maliera, salads, potatoes, Ok'shann... If you want my personal recommendation, Omahrian seaswine omelette, but many humans tell me it is too salty for their taste."
May 24, 2019 6:55 pm
Cass is hard-pressed to think of anything that sounds less appealing that something called a seaswine omelette, so she simply says, "I think I'm with M... RC. A burger sounds perfect."
May 24, 2019 7:06 pm
"If you can make an omelette out of eggs from regular Earth chickens, that would be great", Nic says. "I'm not in the mood for 'seaswine'"
"And for me the... I don't know how to pronounce it, this fish dish" Max points at the menu and Stone nods. "I'm trying to be safe now. One time a few years ago, I tried to pronounce the name of a dish that..." he begins explaining but Nic cuts him off before he can get too far into his story: "And four Iced Vessalian Tea, please. Spike one at random and don't tell us who gets it. Just don't give it to the kid. I don't think he can handle it."
May 24, 2019 7:50 pm
Moira gives Stone a look that he'll know quite well as "please no shenanigans today, I'll tip you more." Darcy's party is later. She doesn't want anyone surprise-tipsy.

So! she asks Nic. What year is yer ship? An' private er public sector? Ah love old freighters. Ah really do miss tha Bull, though ah wouldn't trade tha Potential fer anythin.

OOC:
The current year is 2368
"It's a '44 Merengi heavy freighter, used until '53 by the Trade Board. My boss bought it after it was replaced and heavily modified it. If you like old freighters, you will love the Fork. I've heard people say it looks like a piece of junk on the outside, but one trip in it and they would change their mind."
May 24, 2019 8:12 pm
"Yeah? What kind of modifications have been made to it?"
May 24, 2019 8:24 pm
"I would love to tell you all about it but as I said, those are trade secrets - and Merengi are very strict about trade secrets. It's some Rule of Acquisition, although I don't remember the number. I can show you some of the more interesting ones once we're on the Fork." Nic leans back in his chair and looks towards Stone, checking for the food order which doesn't seem to be ready yet. "Also, Max here seems to be bored with the topic."
May 24, 2019 9:08 pm
Soon after, Stone arrives with the food and everyone starts eating. There is some silence for a short while after Nic cut off the topic of his ship without providing a new one but soon, Max picks up the story he was going to tell Stone when they were ordering again. It's about him accidentally ordering the wrong dish because of a mispronunciation but he manages to draw it out to last a couple of minutes.
Once everyone is done eating, Max excuses himself to his cottage and leaves you three behind in the bar.
As soon as the door closes behind him, Nic leans back in his chair, drinks some of the iced tea and says: "Interesting fellow you picked up there."
May 24, 2019 9:16 pm
Cass sighs. "He's young. I'm hoping he's just nervous and will settle down once he gets adjusted to being on the Potential. I sort of made a big stink during debriefs after the last mission that if a scout ship is going to be put into that kind of situation, a ship's counselor is an absolute necessity. Spacefleet agreed, but I'm told that all the scout ships have been given counselors like him - young and green."

She scowls, shaking her head. "I mean, sure, most of the time, a scout ship isn't going to wind up dealing with a complicated first contact with a dangerous race, so maybe it makes sense to give your new counselors field experience on them instead of starting them on the larger classes. But Moira here is in training to become a ship's counselor, and Max is the guy they send to be her mentor?"

Cass suddenly realizes that she's ranting and picks up her tea glass to take a long drink.
May 24, 2019 9:52 pm
"By the stars, Cass, I just wanted to talk some shit about him. You sound like a captain. Cut yourself loose again." He waves to Stone. "Do you still have some of that stuff the Farredan gave you? We need something strong here." He grins at Cass. "And I won't allow any objections"
May 24, 2019 10:11 pm
Sighing, Cass slumps in the booth. She hadn't meant to start bitching about Spacefleet - it had just sort of tumbled out. But she did resent Spacefleet sending her an inexperienced counselor, especially since they'd made it clear that she was expected to sit down with him for regular appointments once he was stationed on the Potential. She'd had a few sessions with a counselor at the starbase, but he had prescribed ongoing therapy for a while to help her deal with the effects of trauma.

And they somehow thought Max was capable of not only understanding what she had been through, but of helping her heal from it.

When the drinks Nic ordered arrive, Cass doesn't argue.
May 25, 2019 6:47 am
After a short moment, Stone brings you three glasses. Moira recognizes the clear liquid as 'Fleetwine', the very strong drink Stone gave her and Zephyr yesterday. Cass doesn't recognize it.
He puts them on the table and smiles knowingly at Cass, then goes back to the bar. He says: "Small sips, don't down this at once"
Nic raises his glass and waits for you to do the same. "To the good old days. And to cutting loose from spacefleet stiffness"
May 25, 2019 7:00 am
Her glass raised, Cass says simply, "To better days ahead," and takes a sip. It's like drinking a comet; she feels it blasting down her throat and into her stomach. Immediately, her head begins to lightly buzz. "Wow, he wasn't kidding. I'm definitely only having one of these. Maybe not even the whole thing, if I want to be conscious for Darcy's party tonight."
May 25, 2019 7:18 am
"Darcy's party? I didn't even know he was on the planet. Isn't he still recovering on some Starbase?", Nic asks while drinking a tiny sip from his glass.
May 25, 2019 7:27 am
"No, the party's being given by his daughter, Cassandra. She's my acting chief of security." Cass hazards a second sip of the Fleetwine. "Hey, you should come along. You could meet the rest of the bridge crew."
May 25, 2019 7:47 am
"Sounds great. I'd love to meet the rest of your crew. They must have some stories about you that they can tell me." He sips on his drink again, then coughs a few times before recovering. "So, Darcy's daughter... Should I put on my good suit for her?"
May 25, 2019 1:15 pm
Well, she is tha most capable member of tha crew aside from our dear Commander, here.

Moira locks eyes with Nic and takes a larger sip than anyone has yet. It burns, but she manages not to flinch.

But ah think it's a casual affair. Oi. I should bring Max. But yeh'll like tha crew. Tha Potential's a regular family.

This guy is way too careless. And this comes from a woman who hides booze in her Murphy Bed.
May 25, 2019 1:25 pm
"Can't wait to meet her then. I like competent women. But no need to be so hard on yourself, Moira. I'm sure you're great at your job, too. Which reminds me, I bet you have some stories to tell me." He reaches for Cass' head and tousles her hair. "What has Cass been up to without me?"
May 25, 2019 4:14 pm
"I like competent women" is something that a man who owns a stardust fedora would say. Moira does not like this man. And she doesn't like that he's flirting with Cass.

Oi, Moira, she ain't yer daughter.............But! He's a cad.

She smiles coolly.

Oh, ah got plenty a stories, an' ah saved tha Bull. It's why ah'm called "RC." But ah dunnae believe in raisin' mah own pride at tha expense of tha hard work mah superior officers do. As fer Cass? Well, let's see. She's always runs the mornin' debriefs. Has a deep, deep respect fer tha lower-ranked officers - doesn't let frivolity fly, but also makes a point ta acknowledge creative thinkin'. She successfully took our captain an' crew outta a toxic planet-quake after-shock. Oh. An' yeh may have heard about our first-contact with a new, hostile alien race that ended with the buds of genuinely peaceful negotiations with tha Consortium. Ah've got a hunch she was a bit of a spitfire in tha day, but stars, has she turned that inta an asset.

She is dead serious as she continues.

Shawna Cassano is one of the finest folk ah've ever worked with. We need more folks like her in tha Fleet.
May 25, 2019 4:32 pm
Nic's smile slightly faded during Moira's speech about Cass. "I see", he says in a flat voice.
May 25, 2019 4:39 pm
Cass is staring at Moira in shock and confusion. She'd picked up on some antipathy from Moira toward Nic, but had assumed it was just her usual protectiveness around someone acting a bit too familiar with Cass. This display of subtle hostility suggests that it's something more.

"Moira, Nic and I are old friends," she says gently. "He didn't mean any insult to me."
May 25, 2019 4:54 pm
Fashionably late, Zephyr returns to Stone's the next morning as well. He left a note for Vega that he would be heading there.

Nodding everyone as he enters, Zephyr says to Stone, Load me up on some carbohydrates if you have any, and make it spicy. Anything you've got would be fine. Do you happen to have espresso back there?

Zephyr then turns to the group and sits down at their table.

I apologize for the sober ending to an otherwise fun filled evening everyone. I did not realize my sister would be joining us. She has a knack for finding me at the oddest times.
May 25, 2019 5:35 pm
Sometimes friends are "old" for a reason....

Luckily, Zephyr interrupts. She grins when he sits.

Oi, it wasn't a sober endin' fer many of us, Zeph. Take a seat. We've got tea an' Fleetwine. How is yer sister?
May 25, 2019 5:44 pm
Still feeling disturbed by Moira's hostility toward Nic, Cass greets Zephyr and introduces him to her old friend. As Moira switches gears back to her usual self and inquires after Zeph's sister Vega, Cass throws Nic a look of apology and tries to understand exactly what about him has caused Moira's aggressive response. All she can see is her old pal.
May 25, 2019 5:54 pm
OOC:
When Zephyr left, Vega was still sleeping on the couch in the living room. She still hadn't put her food rests back into the replicator to clean up and she had obviously been snooping around the cottage during the night.
Stone acknowledges Zephyr's order and gets to work on whipping up his food, taking his time as he always does.

Nic is having another sip of the fleetwine as he looks at Cass. He rolls his eyes and then glances towards Moira before focusing his attention on Zephyr.
May 25, 2019 6:03 pm
Cass doesn't acknowledge the eyeroll. Whatever the beef is between Moira and Nic, Cass doesn't want to side with either. She just wants everyone to get along. Recent events had demanded more than her fair share of diplomatic effort; she'll be damned if her shore leave will make a similar demand.

She takes another sip of the Fleetwine. "Yes, how is Vega?" she asks, a slight edge to her voice. She'd managed so far to avoid thinking too much about the sobering incident in Zephyr's cottage last night, but now she's finding herself feeling a little prickly about it.

Oh she's fine, she can take care of herself. I, on the other hand, am not fine. Remind me not to drink just any old thing that Stone hands out.
May 26, 2019 1:39 pm
Nic opens his mouth to reply but before he can say anything, he is interrupted by a loud voice from the outside of the bar. Half a second later, the same voice sounds over the speakers inside the bar:
"Attention all guests of Caspera-13. There has been a security breach in the cottage village. If you are currently in the village, go into your cottage. If you are currently in town, go into the nearest building. This is just a safety precaution and there is no danger to anyone. Please stay inside and wait for further instructions."

The front door to the bar opens and some people come in. They don't look like they all belong together and are just coming inside because of the announcement
May 26, 2019 2:17 pm
Moira raises her eyebrows.

Well, ah'd've phrased that about seven better ways. Why do ah get tha feelin' we'll be off shore leave soon?
May 26, 2019 3:22 pm
Once again, Cass itches to hit the comm badge she doesn't have, this time to ask someone what's going on. Instead, she taps Nic on the arm with the back of her hand. "Slide over. I need to get out of the booth."
May 26, 2019 3:30 pm
Nic gets up which gives you enough room to follow him out of the booth. "I want to see what's going on, too. I'll come with you", he says.

Moira notices Stone looking over to their table and specifically to Cass and Nic. He makes eye contact with Moira and she can read the question in his face: "What are they doing?"
May 26, 2019 3:40 pm
Cass nods and heads toward the front door of the bar. The number of people coming in has slowed, and she stops one man briefly. "Any idea what's going on?"
Last edited May 26, 2019 3:42 pm
May 26, 2019 3:48 pm
The man looks at Cass. "I know as much as you do. There's some security announcement. A security officer outside said this should only take a few minutes. It's probably related to the alarm last night, when those cadets tried to steal a hover transport. I guess they broke in somewhere else now."
May 26, 2019 4:08 pm
The man continues further into the bar and Cass frowns at Nic. "Cadets? Trying to steal a hover transport? That's sort of next-level career suicide."
May 26, 2019 4:12 pm
"Yeah, I heard about it. Two kids got arrested last night.
They must have been pretty drunk to try something this stupid. But that doesn't explain the alarm. Why would they put the whole town on alert if it was just about a stolen vehicle? There must be something else going on. We should go out and check!"
May 26, 2019 6:46 pm
As Nic leads Cass toward the front door, it opens again and Alira steps in. Cass recognizes her from the previous night at Zeph's house and she notices that Nic appears to know her as well. Alira, you recognize the two as well and you see them slowly move towards the door together.
Stone steps around the counter but doesn't walk up to Nic and Cass yet. He's waiting for Moira to react but he doesn't seem like he's planning to let them just leave after the announcement.
May 26, 2019 6:48 pm
Alira walks into the bar and looks around. She sees the crew that she met before as well as Nic. She notices that they are looking ready to go and approaches them.

Hello folks. Just a heads up, security is pretty serious about this lockdown. They are chasing a woman behind some crimes here, and she is armed.
May 26, 2019 7:26 pm
Cass remembers seeing this woman at Zephyr's cottage last night; she'd come in with Moira and Zeph, hadn't she? Noting that she's wearing a comm badge from resort security, Cass says, "We didn't quite meet last night. Commander Shawna Cassano, acting captain of the USS Potential. Is this incident related to the one involving the cadets who tried to steal a transport last night?"
May 26, 2019 7:57 pm
Alira salutes.
Nice to meet you Commander.
Yes it does. The cadets were drugged by a woman with something that made them open to suggestions. Although, from my interaction with him, it wouldn't have needed much.
I identified the woman from check in logs and was with Lt. Mars when he tried to apprehend her. Since she has a phaser and I am not on his staff, he thought it better if I sit it out. I do have a security comm badge though, so you can communicate with him

"Looks like you got busy, Alira", Nic comments. "I thought you were just here for that job interview and to have some fun but somehow you ended up in the middle of some serious action."
May 26, 2019 8:26 pm
hey Nic. I had the job interview. I think it went well, but I think the Commander would know better than I would.

Alira chuckles.

Yeah it has been busy. I go on a wild goose chase helping a cadet and then ended up catching the wannabe thieves. Then all this security stuff.
Plus meeting you and all these folks as well.
May 26, 2019 10:28 pm
Cass frowns a little at Alira's comment about the job interview, but she's more interested in the young woman's connection with resort security. "Yes, thank you, I'd like to speak to Lt. Mars."
May 26, 2019 10:42 pm
I will see if he will respond.

Alira taps the comm Badge

Lt. Mars. This is Lt. Commander Vitan.
I am with Commander Shawna Cassano captain of the Potential. She would like to speak with you sir.

After sending the message Alira hands the comm badge to her new captain. Hopefully.
May 26, 2019 11:00 pm
Taking the comm badge, Cass says, "Lt. Mars, Cassano here. I understand you're pursuing an armed suspect. My entire bridge crew is here on shore leave. If you require any assistance from us, just say the word."
May 26, 2019 11:50 pm
bowlofspinach says:
Moira notices Stone looking over to their table and specifically to Cass and Nic. He makes eye contact with Moira and she can read the question in his face: "What are they doing?"
Moria sighs when Cass offers her crew. Ah knew it.

She takes a few steps out of the booth, nodding and gesturing lightly to get people away from the door. She glances back at Stone. It's clear she's not sure what their plan is, and raises her eyebrows. Normally, it would be asking for permission for her to go on whatever goose chase was about to start. But with an extra subtle head bob toward Nic, she's really asking "Should we take him along?"
May 27, 2019 4:47 am
"Comm. Cassano, Lt. Vitan, this is Lt. Norton. Thank your for the offer of assistance but the best way you can help right now is by staying where you are and allowing us to do our job. This situation should be resolved in a few minutes."

Moira leads the people that were waiting around the door deeper inside, making it harder for anyone to slip out the front door unnoticed. Stone announces that everyone who is stuck in here right now will receive one standard drink, alcoholic or non-alcoholic, for free, which is met with some cheering.
May 27, 2019 4:53 am
Alira looks to Commander Cassano for her lead.
May 27, 2019 5:00 am
Cass looks around at the people in the bar and relaxes. "All right, Lt. Norton, we'll stay put. But if things change, please contact me. My offer still stands."

Nic looks between Alira and Cass. "Alright, so what now? Are we really going to let this guy tell us what to do?"
May 27, 2019 5:19 am
Cass shrugs. "Yes, we are. We're on vacation, and resort security is handling things. And I still have a glass of Fleetwine to finish. Lieutenant, you're welcome to join us." She starts picking her way back through the crowd toward their booth.
May 27, 2019 5:26 am
"Moira was right. You have become boring", Nic says but he follows Cass to the booth. "Alira, what do you want to drink? Fleetwine? I can get it for you."
May 27, 2019 5:35 am
I guess one can't hurt.

Sounds good Nic, thanks. And thanks for the invitation.
I hope no one minds if I crash the group.
May 27, 2019 5:49 am
Cass notes Nic's offer to get the young lieutenant a Fleetwine and throws an arm around her shoulders as they walk to the booth. "A word of advice, Lieutenant. Small sips, slowly."
May 27, 2019 6:10 am
Cass and Alira sit down back at the booth with Moira. Nic walks up to Stone and a moment later comes back with a Fleetwine for Alira. He puts it down in front of her and then sits next to her.
He asks Alira: "How did the interview go?"
May 27, 2019 6:12 am
Thanks for the advice. I will be careful.

Alira takes a small sip and views to keep them that way.

It's certainly...ummm bracing.

Alira joins the others and gets them up to speed on what has been going on since Chad.

I guess most of this stuff is not for public consumption,
But if I can't trust you guys, we are in trouble.
May 27, 2019 6:54 am
Like the rest of those assembled, Cass listens to Alira's story about the security-related events of the last day or so. Then something occurs to her. "Alira - what's this interview Nic keeps mentioning?"
May 27, 2019 7:00 am
Alira looks surprised and confused.

I thought you knew. It was with Lt. Commander Darcy. I understood that the Potential needs a chief of security.
I was told by Spacefleet to come here for the interview.
May 27, 2019 8:18 am
Cass sits in stunned silence for a good fifteen seconds, staring at Alira. "What? Darcy is... The interview was with Darcy? Cassandra Darcy?"

She looks at Zephyr and Moira. "Did either of you know about this?"
May 27, 2019 1:59 pm
Moira shrugs aggressively.

No idea, Commander. But if yeh think about it, Darcy was shuffled in tha last mission cuz' a Mike. If he's gettin' rebuilt, then it stands ta reason. Besides. Yer on shore leave. Ah can imagine she didn't want ta stress yeh. One fewer meetin'.

See how well that worked.....
May 27, 2019 2:52 pm
Zephyr makes eye contact with both of the and shakes his head with raises eyebrows.

I hadn't heard either, but we are in need.

Edit: Zephyr silently worries that this attempted thievery somehow involved Vega, but it feels too sophomoric even for her.

"I'm not questioning our need for a security chief," Cass says sharply. "I'm questioning the acting captain being kept out of the loop on a personnel decision. I--"

She cuts herself off, mindful of airing their dirty laundry in front of Alira and Nic. Turning to him, she says, "Sorry, I need to get out of the booth again. Time to visit the little commander's room."

Maybe Darcy got promoted an’ didn’t tell us? That’s still unprofessional, though. Ah’m not sure.

Nic turns so that Cass can climb past him. Once she's out of the booth but still in hearing distance and while Moira is working on her tablet, Nic turns back and looks at Alira. "Before you make up your mind about joining Cass' crew, I think it's important that you know who your new commanding officer is outside of the uniform. You're lucky that I'm here because I know Cass better than anyone. I can tell you a few of our most enlightening stories from the academy"
Moira, you look through logs and spacefleet update channels and you can't find anything official. You discover that Darcy has been sending messages to multiple ships that all have security officers listed who are in consideration for a promotion/transfer to a different ship, primarily the USS Pacifica, Alira's current ship.
She has also been in frequent contact with the captain of one other specific vessel, the USS Luna Moth, a diplomatic vessel that, as Moira discovers, has recently lost almost a fifth of its crew when they got caught in the crossfire of a war they were mediating in.
One last thing Moira notices is that when checking the Potential's ship logs, all members of the bridge crew have the same stardate listed for their return to duty, two weeks from now. Darcy is the only exception, with her entry listing >Return to Duty: n/a

Moira makes a low humming noise. It’s odd, but Kosher. Maybe Darcy’s looking to transfer. The Luna Moth certainly seems to need it. She’ll see if she can check on her during the barbecue. If this security breach ever clears. She puts her tablet away and looks at Nic.

So like, is "old friend" true or polite? Cuz fer all tha time ah’ve known yeh, yeh’ve been vague, patronizing, an tryin’ ya discount Cass’s accomplishments. Yeh honestly think anyone in Spacefleet doesn’t have stories? It’s like yer usin’ Tha ancient earth courtship technique of "negging". If yeh like ‘er, there are better ways.

Already while she's speaking, Moira can see how annoyed Nic is getting at her.
"Okay, Scotty, since you don't seem to get it, I'll make it simple for you. Cass and I have been friends since long before you ever met her. I care about her stories because she is my friend. I don't care about yours, because you are not." He glances over in the direction of Cass. "And one more thing: Cass is like a little brother to me. I'm not trying to court her. I'm trying to have fun with her like we did back at the academy."
May 27, 2019 5:00 pm
No offense Nic, but I prefer to make my own impressions. I am sure the evening will give me lots of opportunities to do so.

She sips her drink

Besides, I haven't been hired yet.

After visiting the restroom, Cass is still restless, antsy. Embarrassed that she learned that Darcy was attempting to hire a new officer from the candidate instead of through proper channels, her emotions keep shifting from anger, betrayal, confusion, and concern. She'd thought that she and Darcy had reached a state of mutual respect and some level of trust, and it's jarring to realize that Cass has possibly misjudged that.

Oh, and Nic is at this moment telling what might be her new security chief what a screw-up Cass was back at the Academy. What a great shore leave this is turning out to be.

Stepping out of the restroom, she finds the noise level of the bar unpleasant - the additional patrons, nervous about their reason for being here and happy to be offered a free drink, have altered the dynamic of the establishment. Or maybe it's just Cass' own emotional turmoil that's changed her perspective.

To her left is a back door marked "Exit." It might do some good for her to step out and get a little air before going back to the booth to do damage control. She opens the door and steps outside. The air is clear and balmy and the din from the bar gone completely. She leans against the building, closing her eyes, and thinks more rationally about what's happening. Whatever Nic might be saying, he's saying with affection. Her crew members know who she really is, at this point in time. Her potential recruit can make up her own mind. And Darcy must have a good reason for what she's doing. They'll discuss it like rational people tonight at the barbecue.

Ready to face things again, Cass pushes the button to open the back door.

It's locked.
May 27, 2019 5:10 pm
It's very calm outside. Whatever resort security is doing, they are not doing it here. With everyone inside the buildings, it's much quieter outside than it should be at this hour.
Cass doesn't see any sign of danger anywhere around.
May 27, 2019 5:20 pm
Sighing, Cass figures she'll just have to walk around to the front. Shoving her hands into the pockets of her shorts, her right hand brushes the comm badge Cass had failed to return to Alira. She makes a note to give it back to her as soon as she gets back to the booth.

She heads down the alley, intent on turning the corner and making her way back to the front door of Stone's.
May 27, 2019 5:26 pm
As Cass is turning the corner, she hears the back door of the pub open again and some heavy steps come out of the building. When she looks around, she sees that it is Stone who has followed her outside.
"Cass, is it?", he asks in a slow, gentle voice. "What are you doing out here?"
May 27, 2019 5:28 pm
Grinning sheepishly, Cass says, "Sorry! I stepped out for a moment of fresh air and couldn't get back inside. I was about to walk around to the front door. Didn't mean to trouble you."
May 27, 2019 5:34 pm
"You're not bothering me at all. I need to step out for some fresh air once in a while, too, especially when I am worrying about something." He pauses and his eyes rest on her for a few seconds until he speaks up again. "Is something troubling you?"
May 27, 2019 5:52 pm
Her impulse is to shake her head and tell him everything's fine. That's what she's told everyone for the last few weeks, with the exception of the counselor she saw on the starbase and Alex yesterday on the beach. Everything isn't fine, of course, but few people want to hear that, and she doesn't want most people to know it. Can't afford for them to know it.

Stone seems like a good guy, but she doesn't know him. So she opens her mouth to tell him that everything's fine, and says, "I'm not really sure who I am, or who I want to be."

Well. Fuck.
May 27, 2019 5:56 pm
With Nic

It’s cute that yeh think yeh can insult me, laddie.

She smiles warmly. Time to turn his logic against him.

Did it ever occur ta yeh that we dunnae know these stories about Cass because she doesn’t want us ta? Yeh say yeh care about her. That includes respectin’ her privacy.

She leans forward casually. But what would Ah know. Ah’m jest a woman who "doesn’t care much fer Latinum."
May 27, 2019 6:50 pm
Inside

"Maybe you're right. Maybe she doesn't want her work friends to know about her private life.", Nic replies as he stands up from the table. "Anyway, I'm heading out. Alira, I hope I'll see you at the party later."
He turns and walks towards the front door to leave without waiting for a reply from you.

Outside

Stone walks up to Cass and leans with his shell against the wall of his bar. "I was wondering about that as well, honestly. You are RC's friend and I need to make sure you're not a bad influence on her." He has a slight smile on his wrinkled lips as he looks up into the night sky. "Are you a bad influence?"
May 27, 2019 6:56 pm
Outside

Cass hesitates, still shocked at her admission to a complete stranger, before she chuckles a little. She leans back against the wall, too. "I'm not sure anyone can actually influence Moira. She knows exactly who she is and what she wants."

Speaking of, Moira calls after Nic.

Yer required ta stay inside! It’s a lockdown!

She shrugs and looks at Alira.

Ah can see why he left Spacefleet. Never learned ta channel his ego. Dunnae get me wrong. Ego’s Important. But still....

She sighs. She tried.

So, yeh’ll be spendin’ more time with us, eh? Still want ta?

Nothing I have seen makes me want to change my mind. A crew that sticks together, stands up for each other, but can still joke with each other? Yeah that's a terrible work environment.

Alira chuckles and takes a sip.

But nothing is decided yet, and I think I surprised the captain. So the question is more likely, am I still wanted.
May 27, 2019 7:26 pm
Nic turns around and grins. "If I get shot, make sure to tell Cass that you warned me"
He walks past a group of people that are standing close to the door. They look at him and say something that you can't understand from your booth. Nic shrugs, opens the door and leaves.
May 27, 2019 7:49 pm
What a cad...

Dunnae worry about it, Alira. Things have been wild lately. Ah’m sure that if she gets that chance, Cassano will approve yeh.
May 27, 2019 7:50 pm
Outside

"She seems like that, doesn't she?" Stone reaches for the small pouch he's carrying around his waist. He pulls out a wooden pipe and some dried leaves and starts preparing it. "Good old RC, I bet she was already born with a screwdriver in her hand. She would never consider doing anything else, would she?"
May 27, 2019 7:59 pm
Outside

That makes Cass laugh outright. "I guess she hasn't had a chance to really catch up with you yet." When he looks questioningly at her, she explains. "She's transitioning right now to becoming a ship's counselor. That kid we were having lunch with earlier is going to be her instructor."

She sighs. "Our last mission didn't go so well. Moira made a mistake in the heat of the moment that resulted in someone being badly injured. I don't know if that was the tipping point for her - a lot of bad-luck things happened after that, too. But ultimately, she decided that she was ready for a career change."

Stone smiles at Cass and she realizes that he knew about Moira's plans. "And do you need a career change, too? You were in the same situation after all."
His tone is very conversational. He puts the leaves that he didn't use for his pipe back into his pouch and rummages in there for something else.
May 27, 2019 8:28 pm
Smirking at his good-natured deception, Cass shakes her head slightly. "No, I was in a very different situation." She doesn't explain what she means by that. "And I'm honestly not sure what I need. Most of my life, I was on a certain path. It wasn't really a good path - meaning it probably wasn't going to end well for me - but it felt like it me. It was what I had chosen.

"Then someone came along and convinced me to start on a different path. At first, almost everyone was telling me that I didn't belong, that I didn't deserve the new position, and they were probably right, at the time. But now... suddenly, all those naysayers are full of praise for me. But nothing has really changed. I just did what felt right at the time. I haven't suddenly changed, so how am I suddenly--"
She stops, realizing that she's hashing over the same things she'd said to Alex the day before, and so maybe the problem is really something other than what she's talking about.

Smiling at Stone, she says, "Sorry. It's just a post-traumatic existential crisis. I'm going to shut up now."
May 27, 2019 8:34 pm
Stone pulls out a lighter that looks tiny is his huge hands and lights his pipe. He takes a deep drag and asks: "So you're saying you don't belong in spacefleet? If that job is not you, then why not quit and find something else?"
May 27, 2019 8:43 pm
"That's exactly what someone keeps urging me to do. Part of me wants to be free of it all, but another part of me thinks that's probably just an excuse to avoid dealing with things." She looks at him. "You were in Spacefleet, right? Why'd you leave?"
May 27, 2019 8:47 pm
"I wasn't in spacefleet. I had a bar on the Bull for a while but I was always a civilian." He takes another drag of his pipe and then offers it to Cass. "If you quit the fleet, what would you want to do instead?" He smiles to himself. "You know, I could use a helping hand here sometimes"
May 27, 2019 9:14 pm
Laughing, Cass waves off the pipe and says, "You wouldn't say that if you'd ever seen me try to mix drinks. No, if I left Spacefleet, I'd do something that involved flying, I guess. It's the only thing I was ever really interested in."
May 27, 2019 9:51 pm
Inside

The three of you inside notice that there is some growing unrest happening. Nic leaving caused some murmured discussions at the front door. Apparently, some people want to leave and ignore the lockdown and others are trying to stop them. There is also a group of people at the bar that seem to be in a troublemaking kind of mood. You hear a man mutter: "Where'd that damn turtle man go to?" Another one yells out: "Hey barkeep, we're drying out here. We need some refills!" A third one suggests: "Screw it. There's drinks everywhere. If that turtle can't keep his eyes on the booze, let's just grab some!"

Outside

Stone shrugs and puts the pipe back between his lips. "If all you ever wanted was to be a pilot, why did you accept your promotion? Doesn't being a first officer keep you out of the cockpit?"
May 27, 2019 10:15 pm
Cass shifts her weight uncomfortably. "My captain said he saw something in me that nobody else was seeing. Challenged me to rise to my potential - no pun intended. He convinced me that I could be more than a pilot and a troublemaker." She shrugs. "And he was right. I'm just trying to decide whether that's really what I want."
May 27, 2019 10:27 pm
Moira overhears the conversation and rises.

Alira, dear, take the door, please? Ah suspect yer more comfortable in a crowd than behind a bar.

As for Moira, she gets up and hops to the bar. She taps nonsense on her datapad and writes on a small sheet of paper to give the appearance of signing in to her shift. With a strong stance and a winning smile, the only person who would look more at home there is Stone himself.

Pleased ta see yeh, gentlemen. Ah hope yeh dunnae mind yer tab is over two shifts. What can I get for yeh?

She winks.

Moira, what you're doing sounds like a good plan. They were just thinking about making use of the opportunity but now that someone is behind the counter again, they won't dare to try and steal anything.
Inside

Alira, people turn around to look at you and the murmuring stops. After a second, someone says: "This is bullshit. This resort was supposed to be weapons free. I had leave my phaser on CC1. If someone is running around armed, I want it back."

Moira, the guys look at you, trying to figure out if you actually belong or not since they've never seen anyone except for Stone behind the counter here, but you look very convincing, so they decide not to risk it. "Three Masconian Gin Mixes", the one who had suggested to steal something to drink barks.

Outside

Stone takes a deep drag from his pipe. "So you wanted to prove to the universe that you could do it? And now that you're a hero and everyone knows that you can, you don't know if this challenge is worth continuing?"

Cass recognizes a trap set to get a rise out of her when she hears one, but it still pisses her off. She manages to keep most of it out of her voice.

"I'm not a hero. I wish people would stop saying that. I just did the best I could, and I got lucky. Mostly. There's no reason to think I could repeat that a second time."
May 28, 2019 5:57 am
The people h the door that you were talking to look confused at first but soon a few others join in your singing and eventually, even they get swept up in it and start singing as well.
At the first chorus, about half the bar is singing along while the other half's reactions vary between laughing at the song and the situation and being annoyed and complaining to their friends about it.
May 28, 2019 6:06 am
When the song ends Alira points at one of the non singers.

Your turn...what do we sing next?

If she won't pick I will open it to the floor.
May 28, 2019 6:25 am
Outside

Stone smiles again. "If that is how you feel you should probably quit your job as fast as you can. Before anyone notices you're not suited for it."

Inside

The man Alira pointed at looks a bit flustered. "Me?" She hesitates and looks at her friend next to her. The whisper for a bit and then at the same time start singing The Latinum Freighter, which is just a general spacefaring song, not related to spacefleet, but it's pretty well known so you know the lyrics.
May 28, 2019 6:38 am
There you go.

Alira sings along. She will keep this up until Stone comes back or the alert is lifted.
She will pick someone each time to choose the song. Trying to get more people involved. If they won't, someone will. The crowd is rolling now.
May 28, 2019 7:39 am
bowlofspinach says:
Stone smiles again. "If that is how you feel you should probably quit your job as fast as you can. Before anyone notices you're not suited for it."
"Yeah, maybe." She grins sadly. "Problem is, I'm not sure if that is how I feel. But... I appreciate the talk. I guess I just have to keep trying to work it out for myself." She gestures toward the door. "I assume you have a key?"
May 28, 2019 8:10 am
Stone puts out his pipe and slowly starts cleaning it. "Just don't let anyone tell you who you are except for yourself. Not your captain, not Nic, not even good old Stone."
Once he's done cleaning his pipe, he puts it back into his pouch and pulls out a key instead. He unlocks the door and as you two enter, you are welcomed by a very loud, very raunchy song about a spacefleet scientist who keeps falling in love with new strange life forms - an academy classic.

Alira seems to be leading the singing and Moira has taken over bar duty and is serving someone a pint of some red liquid.
May 28, 2019 9:02 am
Cass looks at Stone, grins, then winds her way through the crowd to the booth her friends had been sitting at. She slides in and says to Zephyr, the only person left in the booth, "Where's Nic?"
May 28, 2019 8:44 pm
Alira moves to the table for a second.

Sorry for all the noise Commander, but people were talking about leaving. Nic left and people we going to follow. Plus a couple of people were rumbling about helping themselves to booze, so Moira took over the bar.

Alira notices that the song is coming to an end so she points at Cass.

Commander, your turn, what do we sing next? You start, we will jump in.
May 28, 2019 8:59 pm
Cass is already about to ask Alira for clarification - Did she say Nic left? During a lockdown? - when the lieutenant points at her and asks her to start a new song. Of course, the young woman has no way of knowing that this is one of the things Cass hates most in the universe. It's possible - possible - that, if Nic were still at the table, he and Cass would have come up with a song (probably a pretty raunchy one) that the two of them would have performed together. But all the black holes in the universe couldn't drag a solo song out of Cass.

"The last thing I'd want to subject these good people to is my singing voice," Cass says with a semblance of loud good cheer. "I'll leave it to the next person in line."
May 28, 2019 9:03 pm
Alira hasn't been pushing anyone, she wants this to be fun.

STONE! What are we singing next.

Oh, and can someone crowd surf an ale my way?
May 28, 2019 9:19 pm
Moira obliges.

STONE! Tha one about tha very confused turtledove!
May 28, 2019 9:20 pm
Cass leans toward Alira and shouts to be heard over the din. "Did you say that Nic left the bar? Isn't the lockdown still in effect?"
May 28, 2019 9:23 pm
OHHHHHHHH WHEN YEH HEAR THA WORD TURTLEDOVE YEH THINK OF A BIRD WHO IS DELICATE, TINY AND GREEEEEYYYY

BUT WHEN YER JEST A TURTLE WHO’S DEAF AS A ROCK, YEH THINK YEH’VE GOT A CHANCE ANYWAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!
May 28, 2019 9:27 pm
Stone pours an ale and hands it to the person closest to him who in turn hands it to the next until it reaches Moira.
Then he smiles at Moira. "If you want to hear it, you have to sing it, lass", he replies with a deep, slow laugh. He reaches under the counter and pulls out a long, wooden U-shaped instrument and blows into one end, producing a drawn out tone. After a satisfied nod, he starts playing the melody to the song Moira requested
May 28, 2019 9:52 pm
Alira leans in.

He and Moira were sparring, nothing too salty, and he just said he was leaving and would be at the party this evening. He was gone before I could stop him.

She takes a drink of ale.

Sorry, he was gone before I could get to him and I knew if I went to get him, it would lead to a stampede out of here.
May 28, 2019 9:55 pm
Cass shrugs. "Well, he's a big boy. If he runs afoul of resort security, I guess that will be a lesson to him. Well, no, it probably wouldn't." Also, if that did happen, he'd probably be calling her to help him out of the jam. "Sure seems like it's taking them a long time to get control of the situation, doesn't it?"
May 28, 2019 10:17 pm
Maybe you should check in on the comm, tell them people are getting antsy.
May 29, 2019 12:00 am
Nodding agreement, Cass fishes the communicator from her pocket and activates it. "Commander Cassano to Lt. Norton. We have a substantial crowd holed up in Stone's Bar, and some of these people are getting pretty restless and impatient. How's the search for your suspect going? Any chance people can go outside soon?"
May 29, 2019 6:58 am
There is some delay until you receive a response. "We are wrapping things up now and will lift the lockdown in a minute."
May 29, 2019 7:07 am
"That's great news, lieutenant. So you apprehended the woman you were looking for?"
May 29, 2019 7:16 am
"You're a Commander, right? You'll be informed of the situation in a bit", Norton says, not really answering your question. "Norton out."

The crowd in the bar has calmed down during the singing but they're getting a bit restless again after it is done. A few more minutes pass after Cass contacted Norton but then, another announcement happens:
"Thank you for your patience. The situation has been resolved. You can move around town freely again. All spacefleet officers visiting the planet ranked Commander or higher are asked to come to the Security office . Thank you again and enjoy your day."
May 29, 2019 7:25 am
"Well, that's interesting," Cass says, standing. Holding up the communicator, she adds, "I'll return this while I'm at the security office. Zeph, Alira - see you at Darcy's."

Catching Moira's eye, Cass gives her a little wave and leaves the bar, heading to the security office.

Alira chuckles.

Wouldn't mother love that.

Well, if my posting doesn't come through, I may take you up on that

She drinks her juice while making small talk.

I think I will go back to my room and rest for a while.

Alira heads back to her room. She checks to see if Lisa RSVP'D, then sets her alarm for enough time to get ready, in case she dozes out.

Moira takes some juice as well.

Ah haven't done this much singin' in a long time. It's a blast, though.

Moira and Stone talk for a while still. He is talking about how after leaving the Bull, he tried to open a bar on a couple of planets but never really felt satisfied until he ended up here. He tells you about the time he visited his home planet again but got bored because everyone there was so slow. He shares a lot of stories that have happened around him since you last met but there is nothing extremely unexpected he can relate to Moira. He seems happy with where he is right now.
Eventually, more guests appear in the bar and he has less time to talk to Moira. He offers you to come early the next morning because that's when he will have the most time to talk.
