Andwise Tighe-on-Hearth

Starday, 1 Growfest, CY 591
Thick, dark clouds hung over the coastline outside of the port town of Seaton, moving slowly inland and bringing with it the heavy rains typical of this time of year. Spring has just begun to give way to the Low-Summer, a time when farmers and merchants alike celebrated the coming planting season.

As Coldeven comes to a close, the entire countryside has begun what is commonly called Brewfest, a week-long celebration hailing the coming season of crops. Prayers, songs, games and great feasts accompany the festival as farmers make ready for planting their new crops. Seaton, while far from a farming community, is not exempt from such displays of festivity, and everywhere in the city there are banners and displays dedicated to the gods of fertility and crops; Atroa, Velnius, Beory, Ehlonna and even the old god Obad-Hai all see dedications in their honor, as do the prominent sea gods Procan and Xerbo. Everywhere you can see signs of celebration.

Andwise has found himself in this place, though it is far from the rolling hills and comforts of home. Seaton is a military town through and through. At the close of the Great War, King Skotti of Keoland ordered an increase of his naval presence in this area in an effort to ward off the slaving ships of the Hold of the Sea Princes. As such, the traditionally fishing and farming community has seen itself change, growing ever larger to support the burgeoning militia presence.

While the weather outside portends a modest start to the festival, the interior of Harland’s Hostel is warm and inviting, with a large hearth already roaring with flame and hot breakfasts served quickly and efficiently by the wait staff. Harland Underbough, the proprietor, was a halfling of some notoriety here in Seaton, and his accommodations include those sized to one of his own stature, which has suited you just fine these past few weeks.

Daily check-ins with Hilgo Bandylegs, your dwarven contact in the militia, have become boring and tedious, though you are both grateful and dejected that your experience thus far has not been as full of excitement as Uncle John’s stories. Your reverie of his tales is broken with the clatter of a plate before you as Idrissa, one of the four halfling serving girls, drops a heaping plate of meats, potatoes, eggs and bread in front of you.

"Good day, master Andy!" she smiles. "Festival starts today! Can you not wait?"
May 28, 2019 6:00 pm
Andy stands so quickly he knocks his chair over. Blushing deeply, he rights the chair and stammers, Please, Idrissa, it's just Andy. He stares at the young halfling girl for a moment too long before blushing again. Uh, let me help you with that, he says, clumsily taking plates and cups off the serving tray, not all of them meant for him. The, uh, Festival. Yeah, I can't, uh wait. Cursing what feels like a lead weight holding down his tongue, Andy keeps stammering. The Festival should be fun. Tonight. It's a thing. There's a thing. To go to.

It was a painful realization to the young halfling that Uncle Jonny's tales of a soldier during the War did not seem to translate to peacetime. Especially when the soldier is not wearing a uniform and appears to be nothing more than a wandering vagabond looking to make his fortune. And most especially when Andy realized he did not have his uncle's way with the young women. Seaton was about the busiest city Andy had ever been to in his short career in service to Prince Corond, but it didn't compare to the stories spun by Uncle Jonny of his trip to the City of Greyhawk. In his mind, Andy can see himself walking the Processional toward the Grand Citadel, his uncle's description as vivid as if he were actually seeing it.

Andy begins to fumble when he snaps out of his daydream to find Idrissa putting plates back on her tray as fast as Andy is taking them off. Oh! Oh my! Sorry. I'm so sorry. He sits down then quickly stands up again. Before Idrissa can turn away, Andy steels himself and says, The Festival. The thing. It's tonight. His voice drops almost to a whisper. Uh, dance. It's a dance. His face turns an even deeper shade of red as he clears his throat and speaks a little too quickly and a little too loudly. Wouldyougotothedancewithmetonight?

Roll a persuasion check, please.
OOC:
I should have mentioned here, though I think it is in the DM musings, that if you think a check might be warranted, go ahead and include it with your post. If I do not need it, then I will ignore it, but in a PbP, it helps avoid having to wait on someone. Personal threads are no big deal, but when we gather as a party, it can alleviate a lot of the slowness associated with different schedules.

Hoo boy. Why am I feeling my first disaster roll?

Idrissa smiles back as she turns to take her leave, saying "So sorry, mas... Andy. Gotta work!" and she bounds back into the kitchen, leaving you standing at your table.

Andy stands there a moment before dropping forlornly into his chair. Not like Uncle Jonny said at all, he muses dejectedly. He begins picking at his food, making a show of eating it. Whenever Idrissa passes his table, he studiously avoids looking at her. Before he is halfway through his food, he stands, drops a few coins on the table, and heads out the door. He wanders the streets, staring at the preparations for the Festival without really watching them, lost in his own melancholy. No adventure. No girls. Just homesickness and boredom. I should have listened to my sister.

Seaton is in the early stages of preparation for Growfest, though the actual first day of the week-long celebration is today. Even some of the militia, many of them hailing from farming communities themselves, get into the spirit and stop to help revelers put up streamers, sing along with the wandering minstrels and cheering as the various small parades make their way about town. Everywhere people are in jovial moods, which somehow adds a bit to your melancholy.

Turning this way and that, with no apparent destination in mind, you find yourself near the dock area. The soldiers in the docks lean more toward the marines, soldiers who specialize in waterborne combat and who are said to ride skiffs onto shore to assault the enemy lines before even the cavalry arrive. Numerous ships dot the piers, most of them from Keoland based on the flags they fly, but many from different locales about the Flanaess.

As you stroll, unable to avoid the festivities even down here so far away from the town center, a sight catches your eye. A man and woman appear to be arguing (yelling?) at a soldier, whose open arms indicate that he is trying to get them to calm down, of which they are having none.

Curious, Andy strolls closer, not looking directly at the trio as he struggles to overhear the argument.
OOC:
Heh. He tries to dig the wax out of his ears.

You cannot make out what they are actually saying, though you do pick up the fact that apparently someone is missing. The couple seems to blame the militia? Or perhaps they blame the militia for not finding the missing person?

Andy is about to just keep walking when he remembers that he's not just here to get rejected by girls. Realizing this may be what he's been sent here for, he finds a spot where he can observe from a discreet distance. He will follow if he must, but he's waiting for a moment when the couple are by themselves so he can approach them.

Thanks for your patience. Feeling better now.

You watch the couple and the soldier argue back and forth for a while, with the woman getting visibly more red-faced as they go. Eventually, her male companion (husband?) puts his arm around her and leads here away, back toward the interior of town. Though they walk through many groups celebrating Growfest, they do not seem very festive.

You follow them for a while, when they stop at a street vendor to purchase some pastries and drink.

Hi! Andy says as he sidles up next to the couple. I'm new here. What do you recommend to eat. Looking up at them, he feigns a shocked look on his face. Oh! I'm sorry. Am I interrupting? Is everything okay?

The couple looks down, startled by your sudden appearance and outgoing greeting. "Um. Yes. This one." the man says quietly, indicating a pastry stuffed with spiced pumpkin and coated in a honey glaze.

"And we are.... fine. Thank you for asking." he adds, slowly leading the woman as they start to walk away.

Andy buys the recommended pastry then quickly follows after the couple. It's just that you look like you lost something. I've lost something, too. Well, not so much a something as a someone. My brother. Reginard. Reggie. He came early to Seaton. For the festival. I was supposed to meet him, only I haven't been able to find him. I mean, I know he's older and has seen more of the world than me, but I'm starting to get worried. Say, this is really good! Andy finishes around a mouthful of pastry.

The woman stops short and hisses at the man "You see? It is not my imagination! Jared would not just run off like boys will do!"

The man mutters unintelligibly, eyeing you with a bit of of a grimace as he tries to contain the woman. "Our boy. Jared. He just reached his thirteenth year and went missing. Town's guard say there ain't much to do 'cept wait for his return. Probably off goofing in the city, what with the festival and all."

Realizing he has spoken too much to a stranger, and again leads the woman away.
Jun 5, 2019 8:14 pm
Andy waits until the couple gets about a half a block away before he pads after them, making sure to keep the woman between him and her husband. He slips his hand into hers as he starts talking, Only it's just that if Jared went missing and Reggie went missing, maybe they're missing together. When did Jared go missing? Do you know where he was? Maybe Reggie was in the same place. I wonder if other people have gone missing. Do you suppose it's all kinds of people? Or maybe it's just kids? 'Cause Reggie's not a kid, but I know a lot of people say Halflings look like Human children. He looks up at the woman with the best "I'm a scared child" look he can muster. You seem like a nice mom. What's your name? Mine's Andwise, but you can call me Andy.

Not sure if this is another Deception, or maybe a Pursuasion?
