I figured you would do that only if you were rolling both. In this case, I wasn't sure which you would ask for, so I rolled 1d20 and left it up to you to add the appropriate modifier.

The woman stops and looks down as you take her hand, a bit startled at the overt motion by one so small. She starts to pull away, but before she does her eyes begin to tear and her face become red.

"I'm Arlene. This is my husband, Bethel. We were headed for Seaton when our boy, Jared, just up and vanished. It was by those marines down by the docks! He dreamed of one day serving the kings army, and when he saw they had a group of them stationed at the docks, well, we couldn't keep him away. We were only stopping here in the city because we haven't ever seen such a place, and what with the festival and all. He just, well.. just... vanished. One minute he was running around, the next he wasn't."

She pauses as she slips into a fit of sobbing, and through her tears and trembling she says "But those men! Those non-helpful, sons-of-"

"Arlene!" her husband interjects, looking down at you apologetically. "The soldiers say they cannot spare the manpower to find a lost boy that probably is out getting into mischief with others like him. Well, I say that ain't my boy." Bethel finishes for his sobbing wife.

Andy shudders a bit, suddenly regretting using the real name of his youngest brother in his ruse. It did help put him in a proper frame of mind to project the sadness of one fearing for his sibling, though. It also forced him to sympathize with the couple a little more than he was comfortable with. He did sympathize, but he needed a clear head and, with a swallow, pushed his emotions a little deeper down. Have you heard of anyone else gone missing? he asks. You hear things. Like that there's those that take advantage of the chaos since the war. If others have gone missing, they'd have to listen, wouldn't they?

"Not sure 'bout others gone missing." Bethel replies. "Official investigation.. can't discuss... blah, blah blah. Gods, they think we be stupid!!" he yells loudly to no one in particular.

With a low voice, he adds "Some of m' mates down on the dock think the slavers 'n' smugglers prolly took 'em. Always lookin' for new blood t' man the rails and whatnot. Me? I think maybe the guild or somethin'. They's ways t' trick a lad into doin' no good, then bindin' them to th' contract." Placing a distinct emphasis on the last word.
Jun 11, 2019 2:26 pm
Not really knowing a better way to extricate himself, Andy squeezes Arlene's hand and says, I'm sure they'll both turn up, ma'am. With that, he disappears into the crowd and heads for the docks, looking for the likely place Jared was when he was snatched, Andy having no doubt that Bethel was correct: slavers had their boy and likely many others.

As he winds his way through the crowds, Andy takes on the demeanor of a carefree and whimsical child. Knowing that nothing about his appearance strikes an intimidating posture, the young Halfling has found that taking on the opposite appearance, that of a hapless and helpless youngster, is far more helpful at getting what he wants from others. As he nears the docks, though, Andy grows more cautious. As the festival crowds thin, he becomes more furtive. More likely to take circumspect routes. More often ducking into a doorway or behind a crate to briefly watch for followers before continuing on. Once he finds a likely and secluded spot with a broad view, Andy conceals himself, pulls out the remains of his pastry, and watches and listens.
OOC:
Damn! Now those are some rolls!

Sitting quietly, the time passes slowly for you. The festival rages all around, with games, parades, entertainment troupes and throngs of people moving throughout the city of Seaton. Down near the docks the events taper off a bit earlier, as most people in the district rely on early rising to make a living and so while the bars rage deep into the night, there is not a lot of traffic outside teh drunkards stumbling to and from their rooms or ships.

Perhaps four hours past sundown, with the sky full of stars and the twin moons Luna and Celene reflecting off of the harbor, you spy some furtive activity from the par end of the piers. A small boat has come across the harbor, using the fact that it is small compared to the moored ships and that the night relatively dark (and most people long-since asleep of passed out).

Two men climb out, and you see them lift a rather large chest from middle of their craft and head down the dock towards the river quarter.
Jun 13, 2019 2:26 pm
As the hours pass, Andy grows more and more sullen, cursing his lot inwardly. As he hears the revelry of the festival-goers, he just starts complaining to himself. Should be there, having fun with everyone else. Instead, I'm stuck here, waiting for something that's probably not going to happen. Could kick Uncle Jonny and his damn stories. When the wind shifts and the smell of wafting meat briefly overpowers the smell of the docks, his stomach starts rumbling. And I'm starving. Should be there having fun.

Every time Andy thinks about giving up his post, the image of his littlest brother flits across his mind. Why did I use Reggie's name with those people? I could have said Aloysius instead. I could be back home. I could be a farmer. Maizie down the lane wasn't THAT homely. We could have an acre and a little one by now. I'd be home in bed. Maybe it's not too late. She didn't have many prospects. She might still be there. She'd be, what? nineteen now. Not quite an old maid. Then the thought of Reggie in the hands of slavers renewed his sympathy for the human couple and served to remind him of the mission he and others were on.

As the night wears on, Andy finds himself drifting in and out of consciousness, the slapping of the waves on the docks lulling him to sleep. His eyes suddenly snap open, and it takes him a moment to figure out why. Then he realizes that the rhythm of the waves has changed. Maneuvering himself for a better view, he sees a small boat coming across the harbor. As he watches them unload their cargo, he does his best to stretch his legs and rub some life back into them.

As they carry the chest down the docks, Andy slips from his perch and follows after, keeping carefully to the shadows. Don't worry, Jared, I'm coming.
OOC:
Let's see if I can repeat those rolls!

Nope, back to form!

You follow the men easily enough. They stumble and jerk as they carry an obviously heavy chest. They lead you through some winding alleys before they come to what you think is their destination. All is well, up until the point that a drukard stumbles out of the dark and right into you.

With a yell, and stumble and a crash, the man falls into a pile of refuse against the wall of the building across from you, yelling and cursing as he does so. The two sneakers jerk upright, one of them producing a small stone that lights up the alleyway in your direction.

"Oy! Who's thar? Be on wit'cha for ya get what's comin' to ya!" the light-holder says. The other man is furtively working a lock on the door.

In a flash, Andy slips around the drunk in an attempt to hide himself behind the man, hoping the pair he's been following will think the drunk is the only other person in the alley. He gives the drunk a bit of a push to get him moving forward, hoping for enough of a distraction to find a corner or crate or doorway to slip into or behind.
OOC:
Sorry for taking so long. I've been trying to find time to craft a more in-depth response, but it's been a busy few days, and I'm out of town again, this time to see my pappy for Dad's Day.

The darkness and the newly-arrived drunk provide the perfect cover for you as you manage to squeeze into a small indent in the surrounding buildings and disappear in the shadow.

"What for, this! the drunk man says, staggering forward a few steps before stopping to urinate in the middle of the alley, in full view of the two men."

"Be off, a'fore ya go from stallion t' gelding, ya gudgeon!" the man at the door mutters. As he does, you see the lock release and the two men heft the chest into the building. The drunk, mutters, stumbles and works his way the other direction, away from the men, eventually disappearing into the city.
OOC:
Gudgeon - Thieves Cant meaning 'fool'

Andy waits until the drunk is out of sight and the suspicious men are in the building before heading to the door. He places his ear to the door, listening carefully. When he is certain he can hear nothing, he lights a candle, pulls a set of tools from his pack, and sets to work on the lock.

As quiet as can be, you dart across the way, listening intently at the door. Hearing nothing, you check to make sure no one is coming, and then attack the lock. Almost in surprise, the lock opens easily, and with a faintly audible creak you slide open the door. A dim light shines from within an entryway, coming from the interior of the home, where you can see a lighted back room. In there it appears to be a kitchen of some sort. A table has the chest set on it, and a lone person sits in a chair, feet up on the table as well, drinking from a tankard.

The lighted back room is the kitchen? Do I see anything or anyone in the other rooms? Stairs? Another exit?

The door opens into a wide entryway with doors at either end. Across the small foyer is another, open, door, that gives a view into the lighted kitchen. From where you are, you see no stairs.

Realizing no one knows where he is, Andy is beginning to very much feel like he's in over his head. As he is about to leave to inform his contact of what he's seen, he begins cursing inwardly when he remembers that Master Bandylegs is in Sanduchar right now.

I've got to know what's in that crate! he thinks to himself. Suddenly hitting upon an idea, Andy carefully heads back out, closing the unlocked door behind him. Again in the alley, he goes looking for the drunk he hid behind, hoping to find him and as many other stray partiers as he can find.
OOC:
Andy is looking for some drunks to convince that a new shipment of "comfort women" have come in to get them all in the building to cause a distraction.
