YOu spend a good half-hour searching through the place, but it looks like the city-watch managed to get anything that might shed light on this crew. The rooms are already fairly tossed, and the plants/chest are all gone. There are a couple of nice quilted blankets in the two bedrooms, but beyond that you don't find anything of use.
Jul 11, 2019 7:53 pm
With sigh, Andy heads out of the house, putting the lock back on the door as he leaves. Although not necessarily trying to move stealthily, Andy still sticks to the shadows as best he can as he makes his way back to the watch station to see if Enos was able to get any information out of the men he captured. He'll give Enos a description of the hooded figure that tried to get into the building then head back to his rooms. If he can find some food on the way, he'll eat. Otherwise, he'll just have some rations in his room and sack out for a few hours.

Before he goes to sleep and while it's still fresh in his mind, Andy will write up a report to give to Hilgo Bandylegs tomorrow. Today. I'm so tired.

Shuffling off to your small apartment in the city, you manage to catch an early-rising street merchant who is selling hot nuts with honey glaze and freshly-baked pastries. 3 coppers later you are licking your fingers and laying your head on a pillow. The sun is just rising, but your heavy curtains block most of it out, and you drift into a slumber.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Three sharp knocks are followed by three solid BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

"Rise, n' shine Andy! Cap'n wants ta see ya!"

The voice is unmistakably Enos, and you are still unmistakably exhausted.
Jul 15, 2019 6:02 pm
Andy groans as he rolls out of bed. Gimme a minute, Enos! he pleads. He relieves himself in the chamber pot then dresses quickly. Since he had plopped onto the bed almost at the same time as he had removed his leather armor, he was still mostly dressed, so it didn't take long. He grabs his report to Bandylegs, placing it into a sealed envelop before stuffing it in his pouch. With a smile that is more grimace, he opens the door and sighs. What's this all about , Enos? he asks as he follows the guard.

"Sorry! Cap'n says he needs ya down th' station post haste; what'er that means." Enos replies. With him outside of your room is an escort of six men, all armed with shields and spears. They stand to either side, forming a path between them. Outside, you can hear the sounds of the daily Brewfest festival in full swing of its second day. The sun loks to be high in the sky, so you figure you got all of maybe 3 hours of sleep before Enos disturbed you.
Jul 16, 2019 1:26 pm
Uuhh... Andy hesitates when he sees the other guards. What's with the escort?
OOC:
What's the political climate here? Andy is known to Enos and some of the other guards and soldiers, right? But is his mission above-board? He works for a different country, after all. Do they know about Bandylegs?
Jul 16, 2019 4:39 pm
OOC:
The town of Seaton has a full complement of soldiers, particularly Navy, as King Kimbertos Skotti, ruler of Keoland, wanted to establish a base to thwart the activities of pirates and slavers, particularly from the Hold of the Sea Princes to the west.

In the city itself, it is your average city. Plenty of fealty shown to the crown, and the men of the army and navy are stalwart supporters as far as you know. With regard to your mission, no one knows about who you work for or that you are anything other than your typical member of the army. Your mission is mostly covert, since no one trusts the Sea Princes and they might have spies within the ranks of the crown's men.

"Cap'n said bring an escort. Guess he wants folks t' see the one what rooted out the house o' th' Vapers. Been tryin' ta nail them for a while now." Enos says with a wink, turning on his heel and walking away.
Jul 16, 2019 5:23 pm
Andy's eyes widen. Great. There goes my cover, he thinks to himself. Then his stomach sinks as sudden realization hits him. If they're parading me through town like this, they're going to get me killed. Is that the captain's plan? The Sea Princes have spies everywhere. Is the captain one of them? I don't know who I can trust.

Andy eyes Enos for a brief moment before he decides the guard has never given him any reason for doubt. And it's not like he has much of a choice. He motions Enos into the room, out of sight of the escort. In a low voice, he says, Enos, this is a little embarrassing, so I hope you can keep it to yourself. I ran into some money problems and had to send to my parents to pay off a small debt to Master Bandylegs, the smith. He hands Enos the sealed envelope with his report. I was supposed to have this at his smithy before noon today. Do you think you could deliver it for me? And please don't tell anyone. I don't want people to know I got in over my head.

"Uh... well.. sure?" Enos replies hesitantly before finally agreeing and taking the envelope from you. With a grin, he tucks it into his belt and leads you out into the city, the guards flanking you both as you head toward the headquarters of the city watch. Along the way, you manage to draw the looks of some folks, but for the most part citizens are more into the festive activities than anything else.

As you move, it becomes apparent that the guards are almost a necessity; you might have taken hours to get to the captain's quarters had they not been there to help part the throngs of revelers. As it is, it still takes you over an hour to reach your destination.

The headquarters of the city watch is an impressive stone structure located in the bailey of the city keep, which resides along the southeastern part of the city. Its towering walls and ramparts but against the docks and the ocean, and the fisherman, longshoremen and hubub of the Wharf District are very prominent here.

You are led through the gates into the inner bailey, and into the heavy stone building that houses the city watch. Through the twisting and turning hallways you go, until you come to the office of the Captain of the Seaton City Watch. Damien Blades is a well known man in the city, and his skill in battle is rivaled by his stern adherence to the law and to the discipline of his men. You stand before him, his impressive shadow nearly blocking the light from the window behind him. before you even have a chance to greet him, he tosses a small bag onto the edge of his desk. It rings with the sound of coin.

"50 gold. That's your reward." he says simply.

Standing at a loose attention, Andy does his best to maintain a stoic exterior. Inside, though, he's breathing a sigh of relief. And feeling a little foolish. Thank you, sir, he says, though he makes no move to take the bag of coins. I only regret I was not able to trace their source or their buyers. Have you gotten any information out of them?

The captain looks down at you, a knowing expression on his face. "Funny you should ask that, soldier."

He sits in his chair, pouring a drink for himself, and then striking a flame to light a pipe he pulls off of his desk. "I know you've some experience in the art of covert intelligence gathering. So, I'd like you to be my eyes. Not here in Seaton, though, a little further to the west."

He pauses briefly to draw on his pipe, exhaling slowly and deeply for added emphasis before looking at you again. "The Vapers were working with another group called the Silent Hands. They are more of a smuggling outfit than anything, and there have been reports of the Hands getting involved with some very bad people. Perhaps from the Sea Princes themselves, but perhaps not. I want to find out."

Looking to Enos and then to you, he draws a slow draw on his pipe again. "In a few days, Enos here will have your new identity. You'll travel by caravan west a few days to the town of Saltmarsh. She sits right on the inlet to the Hool Marsh, so is a ripe place for smuggling and other sorts of illegal activity. See what you can find and send reports back to me."
Jul 17, 2019 8:47 pm
Andy offers up a nervous smile as he fidgets a little bit. What, uh, what sort of new identity? Sir. Because if it's as a smuggler, you, uh, you should know, uh, that is, I'm not. His face grows red, and he curses his tongue-tied weakness. Sir, I don't want to hurt someone. An innocent, I mean.

"Perhaps a merchant then? Perhaps seeking to establish trade there? A little snooping, a little questioning; perhaps they will approach you." the captain says, blowing smoke across his desk to settle around your head.
Jul 18, 2019 3:19 pm
Andy tries to hold it in, but a cough begins to work its way through his pursed lips. Doing his best to keep a hard look off his face, he studies the captain's face to try and determine if his actions and attitude show a certain amount of contempt for Andy or if it's just his manner. Or perhaps he has some ulterior motive? When he recovers, he says, in a raspier voice, Yes sir. A merchant should work out nicely. Someone with a reputation for not questioning the origin of his goods. If that is all, sir, I'll work out the details with Enos. Andy pockets the bag of gold and, with the captain's permission, heads out with Enos.

The captain seems like he is just testing you, looking to see if you would have a reaction to the smoke. Or, as you contemplate, he may just not like you for some reason. You have not had any dealings with him, so it may be halflings in general.

Leaving, you and Enos return to your apartment where he leaves you. "It'll be few days, Andy. Festival has us worn thinner 'n' a gray hair. Should be able t' get you what ya need by week's end."
OOC:
Let me know what Andy would like to do over the next few days and we can work through it.

That's fine, Enos. I thought it was going to take longer, so I guess I can take that envelop to Master Bandylegs myself. I'll meet up with you later tonight with a list of things I'll need. Even though he's still tired, there's a spring in Andy's step. For now, I think I'll enjoy some of the festival! Andy heads back to his room to hide the bulk of his reward, keeping a few coins in his pocket. He then heads over to Bandylegs's to bring his report in person.
OOC:
First, Andy will report to Bandylegs, then he's going to enjoy a day at the festival. He'll meet up with Enos tonight to go over what he needs for his disguise. The rest of the week will be more of a relaxed vigilance. Enjoy himself a bit, but still keep his eyes out. He'll also see if he can find Arlene and Bethel.
