Shore Leave: The Warehouse
Jun 12, 2019 5:40 am
Cass and Alex wake up almost exactly at the same time. They're sitting in almost complete darkness. After letting their eyes adjust for a moment, they can tell that they're in some kind of storage room. There are shelves and boxes everywhere but most of the shelves are empty. The only light in the room is a very faint shine that comes from the top of some stairs on the opposite wall of the room. They cant see the source of the light from their current angle but judging by just how little light it is, it most likely is just the gap under a door.
Cass and Alex notice that their hands are cuffed in front of their bodies and that both of their right hands are cuffed together. They hear some noise from the direction of the light but they cant make out what it is.

Taking stock of the situation, Cass finally speaks. "In my considered opinion, which I feel I can state without fear of contradiction, this shore leave, so far, sucks." She gestures with her head toward the likely doorway. "Feel like trying to make our way over there to see what's going on outside of this room?"

"I think I enjoyed the hangover more," Alex mutters as she comes awake. "Phaser stun has never been my favorite method of oblivion."
She considers Cass's question with head canted slightly. "Your subordinate wouldn't dare to contradict," she replies archly, a little smirk creeping onto her lips. "You know, if you're into that whole dominance thing, you should just say so. The cuffs and hostage-taking routine seems a little bit overdramatic."

Cass feigns elaborate concern. "Aw, is this your first time? In cuffs, I mean?"
Jun 12, 2019 4:30 pm
"Wouldn't you like to know?" replies Alex. "I don't give up my secrets without a lot more encouragement."
She too gestures toward the door. "We should at least take a listen first, though."

Cass chuckles. "Well, I don't mind saying that it's not my first time. Back in the day, Nic and I actually figured out a way to hack the locks on these cuffs, although I don't know if I could manage it now."
When Alex mentions moving toward the door, Cass says, "Right. Okay, let's hold hands to ensure timing and balance as we stand up. On three - one, two, three."

"And I thought I was the one with the checkered past."
Alex coordinates with Cass and with a minimum of stumbling and awkwardness, they’re able to stand up. "It's not your birthday, is it? This isn’t just some elaborate ruse to get you to a surprise party?"

Cass considers for a moment. This was the Potential crew, after all... Finally, she shakes her head.
"Not my birthday, and if there's a surprise party behind that door, someone's getting a beatdown. Ready?"
Continuing to hold hands for coordination, they sidestep across the room to the presumed door.

Alex shakes her head. "If so, I am not in on the gag."
She puts an ear up to the door to see what she can hear.

The two of you walk towards the light source and, coming closer, realize that there are in fact stairs leading up to a higher level and the door is located at the top of those stair. You hear some voices from the other side of the door. They sound like they're speaking in a normal volume but without getting closer to the door, you can't make out anything.
Alex pulls your duo up the stairs and the moment you step on them, there is a single, loud mechanical beep and the voices stop for a moment. When Alex puts her ear against the door, the only thing she can hear is a man's voice, muffled by the door to the point that she can't tell if it's the man that abducted them from the party or not. The voice says: "Sounds like they're awake. Should we talk to them or not yet?"
There is a muffled response but Alex can't make out what it says.

Alex leans over to whisper into Cass's ear. "There's at least two of them right outside. They're discussing whether to come in and talk to us."
She takes a quick look around the room. "Let's see if we can get into any of these boxes, see if there's anything we might be able to use."

Nodding, Cass heads toward the nearest box. "Let's split up," she jokes as she guides both their hands toward the top to open the box.

Looking through some of the boxes, you don't find anything of importance. There's some pieces for electric work and old computer parts here and there, some sensors and cables as well. Maybe you could scrounge up some unbroken computer pieces and build something very simple from it but that would take time.
There is nothing that's suited to be a weapon. The closest thing would be some larger metal pieces that could be thrown but they aren't particularly aerodynamic so even for that they're not ideal.
As you're browsing through the boxes, you hear a familiar beeping sound as the door unlocks. It doesn't open but you know that it would if you stepped up to it now.

"Act casual? I get taken hostage every six months or so these days. I am the very soul of casual," Alex says lightly. She affects a relaxed pose, leaning against one of the shelves with her right elbow propped up. After a moment, she switches to the left elbow. She shakes her quickly, and goes back to her original pose. "This is my better side, don’t you think?"
Jun 12, 2019 9:25 pm
"Stop that!" Cass hisses as her arms are yanked this way and that by the movements of the much taller Alex. "Just pick a pose with your hands as low as possible and stick with it."
Jun 12, 2019 9:36 pm
The door does not open and after a minute or two, you get the impression that nobody is going to come through.
Jun 12, 2019 9:40 pm
Cass looks at Alex. "Maybe they unlocked it so we would come out?" Shrugging, she says, "Let's see what's out there," and starts moving toward the stairs.

Cass and Alex make their way up the stairs again and when they reach the top and walk in front of the door, it opens, letting a blinding wave of light in.
After a second, their eyes adjust and they can see the room on the other side of the door. It is another storage room, presumably abandoned as well but now converted into a temporary hideout. There's a folding table with a pile of playing cards on it. Two people are sitting at the table, the man who stunned you two with his rifle and a woman with curly brown hair and lightly pointed ears. There's some food stored on one of the shelves, there's camp beds on the floor in the far corner of the room. The woman that attacked the party is lying on one of the beds, her face covered in medical equipment. Sitting next to her is the leader of the attacking group. He smiles without any maliciousness in his expression. "Your friend packs quite a punch.", he comments calmly. "Sorry for putting you in such an uncomfortable position. If you promise not to cause us any trouble, we might be able to make you more comfortable."
He is wearing a phaser in a holster around his waist but he's not reaching for it.

Whatever Cass had expected, this isn't it. But she shows only mild surprise at the friendly treatment. She knows how quickly such a manner can pivot to viciousness.
"I think we'd both appreciate being more comfortable," she says humbly, smiling. "And yes, our friends are pretty passionate in their loyalty. Sorry it got so rough, but you did tell us that your phasers were on 'kill.' That increased the melodrama on our end."
She holds out her hands - and of necessity, Alex's - to reiterate the desire for greater comfort.
