4 - This mine goes deeper than you'd think

Jun 26, 2019 8:31 am
It took you two days to discover it.

After almost dying when the copper mine's first level collapsed, you discovered that there was another level under it. It had nothing to do with the enemies you tracked to this place, though. It even seemed like they had never been there. But you've discovered two important things down there: first, one of the missing villagers you came to rescue, a little girl, managed to escape her monstrous kidnappers and hide as far as she could in the sub-terrain ; then, when Sceen went back to explore the lower level as you were taking care of Mee'aïl's wounds, she discovered that some kind of strange stone was present in the part used by Akra and Dro. Traces show that something massive was dug out of here, something you discovered the next day.
[ +- ] The old well used by Dro and Akra to reach the lower level
After retreating out of the mine and spending the night hidden in a nearby grove, you came back to explore the mine further and in hope to find the rest of the villagers. Unless you forced her to go away, Eliana (the little girl) will stay with you because Mee makes her feel safer.
[ +- ] The mine's entrance, as creepy as when you saw it first
You carefully explored the rest of the mine, fighting some more spiderlings on the way. There seems to be a pattern in their behavior, as they always try to pin you down even before attacking when they clearly could harm you in many ways. That second day featured some major discoveries.

First, north of the collapsed ground you discovered some kind of sacred place, with no religious sign of any kind but still clearly built as a place of peace to contemplate or admire what was there : a Shrine, with amazing uncut floating magical stones. They seem to match what Sceen discovered in the lower level. No sign of spiders in there.
[ +- ] The Shrine
Second, as you went deeper in the mine, you ended up in front of that:
[ +- ] City doors
An ancient, clearly dwarven gate to an underground city you have never heard of. The stone doors have been destroyed apparently from the inside, and the hall where you are standing show clear signs of an extremely violent battle mixing magic and traditional weaponry. Like in the place you discovered and that collapsed when you got attacked in it, there are dwarven armors, weapons and shields still attached to their owner's squeletons and, if you are willing to take anything from them, you will probably be able to get a better version of your own: Shield, Splint/Breastplate/Half plate armor, Battleaxe, Greataxe, Spear, Maul, Warhammer or heavy Crossbow. No light weapons, but dwarves are not known for using them that much.
[ +- ] Dwarven alloy properties
[ +- ] How they look like
Pushing the investigation even further, you explored the big dwarven city for hours. Spiderlings and Lolth Spawns (the weird spider-kobolds) patrol or cross the city very ofter, but you manage to hide from them most of the time and only had to fight them twice. While it looks like the place was reshaped several times, houses are rather simple and it looks like most inhabitations were occupied by common workers. Probably those who worked in the mine, actually.
There's a large rift in the ground with bridges to cross it and, oddly, some kind of bluish light coming from it that baths the whole city with a supernatural glow.
[ +- ] The rift
You discovered a massive door sealed with glowing dwarvish rules that seem to have held better than regular ones, but you still have to find the path or passage from where the spider-things come from.

You start to be pretty exhausted by a day of careful and sneaky exploration. Eliana refuses to walk any more, and just sit on a stone bench in the small street where you just hid to avoid another patrol. You'll have to either carry her if you want to get out of the mine to rest, or find a safe place to rest nearby.
OOC:
Where will you chose to rest?

Sceen hopes to find some new creature of worth here and touch disappointed at not finding such. Her giant rat Slide is ever there at her side. She did pick up a Dwarven Shield, Great Axe, and Heavy Crossbow that she loads up it up. She is currently carrying for sure. How many bolts & cases can she manage to get? The shield and great axe are put away for later use when she changes over to ranger/fighter. Did we find any coins about does it look like this place was looted out for coins?

Being Wood Elf, Screen can't read any Dwarven. She looks over the designs and such of the buildings with passing interest.

We need to rest. I will keep a lookout for patrols.

Most bolts were damaged, either by whatever happened to them back in that battle or simply by time. There were plenty of bold heads, but few usable bolts.

You did not find many valuables so far. Apart from the weapons, that may actually be worth quite a lot. Either the place was looted since it fell, or they the valuables been gathered somewhere you haven't been yet. Or maybe there simply was nothing here that you'd find valuable.

Sceen with have a lot of bolt heads and a few bolts then.

Sceen, give me some Wisdom (Perception) roll to see how many bolts you could find. Double that number if the group agrees to take an extensive while to search the entire hall (up to my maximum rolled number).

Am I correct to presume that there were only heavy armor available? If so - Meeh would only switch his shield for a more sturdy one.
Also he would try to persuade Eliana by any means necessary to not follow them into the danger. If she disagree - he will asks his companions to leave in secret, so that Eliana won't follow. Taking small girl into monsters' nest (if there are safer options) goes against Meeh's character.

Breastplate is a cumbersome medium armor, but other than that you are correct to think that dwarves tend to use heavy everything. Probably even heavy spoons!
Edit: hey, you now are a druid right? No metal armors or shield for you then. And you'll probably want to avoid using metal weapons as well, event if they are not exactly taboo.

It is a hard task to convince a small girl to go home on her own when she's about two days away from her village. You'll need to succeed a DC 20 Charisma or Intelligence (Persuasion) check, or a DC 15 Charisma or Strength (Intimidation) check, depending on how you want to convince or scare her.
Edit: now that you can turn into beasts, you'd get advantage on your Intimidation check if you were to do that as part of the intimidation.

... moving on!
[Rolling so dice on behalf of Mee'haïl]
After trying to bargain, convince and negotiate, Mee'haïl finally resorts to simply scaring the little girl away. She runs off in the grove, heartbroken that her savior would send her away like that.

Your intrusion of yesterday doesn't seem to have had a lot of consequences. It doesn't look like the spiders are patrolling the abandoned mine, yet you have to be careful because you suspect that something is going on and you don't want to become their number one priority.
OOC:
Please give me a group stealth check to go through that level and reach the City again... if that's what you want to do, of course.

Looks like I read it wrong the first time. I was under the impression that we rested near some settlement or such... But since we moved on, I'll say that Meeh has some post-concussion issues and still was muddle-headed when dealing with a girl.

The evening before Meeh would prepare thirty goodberries and store them in the pouch.
As we approached the entrance of the cave, I stopped and addressed my companions: — Do not be alarrmed by what you see next. I just take forrm zat is better. Forr kave.

I concentrate for a few seconds and an earthly light envelops my body before slowly fading away. Next moment my form beings to shift and shimmer as it slowly morphs into one of the spider. Finishing the transformation, I write on the ground: 「 All good? 」

21 and 24 on your stealth checks? Wow, that's an impressive one.
Like two shadows in the light of the rising sun, the two of you sneak back into the abandoned copper mine. Thanks to your discretion, you are able to spot a group of spiderlings and loth spawn in the pillar room just across the mine's entrance without them noticing you. They seem to be inspecting the remains of those you killed two days ago and that they just discovered.

What do you do?

I nod... with my whole body, in reply to elf's suggestion. Whole "being a spider" is quite new experience to me. More extremities. More eyes. It's strange, foreign, but at the same time - very natural. Again. Strange.
OOC:
Meeh isn't in a hurry. They are on rescue mission, not subjugation, so he can be patient.
Jul 17, 2019 12:41 pm
After exploring every corner of the "pillar room" while exchanging utterances (Sceen, they speak in Undercommon and you get that they suspect that someone came in and might become a threat to the Nest), the investigation squad heads south and pass really close to were you're hiding without noticing you. Then, seeing who the sun is shining outside, they decide to head west and see what's going on that way.
The path ahead is free as far as you can tell, and you can continue to move like two shadows toward the destinations you chose.
OOC:
Mee, you can tick 40 minutes off the Wild Shape clock.

Looking to the spider, Lets get moving before they come back. Coast looks clear. She is ready to move.
