Part 2: Phandalin

Wish chuckles amiably at the foolishness of children.
"It seems no one cares for these Red Brands! (chuckle)"
Wish introduces them (including Hollow's followers/retainters/family, if they're with us), then continues:
"We're sorry to trouble you, but we'd appreciate it if you could get us in touch with the local druid, whom I believe is called 'Reidoth'...? We're friends of Gundren Rockseeker's, and we think he's been taken by goblins to a castle in the Wood. We figure Reidoth might help us find that castle, or at least point us in the right direction."

"No one knows the area better than Reidoth! If there's a castle out there, he would know. I'd love to get you in touch with him, but he's just recently gone on a trip. He left for Thundertree, an abandoned village just along the western edge of the Neverwinter Wood. You can try to catch up if you'd like, it's easy enough to get there; just head north 'til you hit the woods and follow them northwest, you can't miss the place!"

Carp is having much fun playing and wrestling with Kama.

Map shows Thundertree is about 50 miles northwest of Phandalin

"Thundertree!! That's gotta be 50 miles!!"

(OoC: It took us how many days to come down here from Neverwinter with Gundren's ox cart?)

Wish looks at the rest of the group. "We will want to get mounts if we're going to travel that far, and even then, it'd be a couple of days." He makes a show of checking his pack, even though he fully knows how much money he's carrying.

"...and we don't have enough coin to buy mounts for all of us at the moment."

Kama shrugs. "The wagon is Gundar's, right?" he says. "Maybe we'll bring deliver it to him, personally."
Nov 18, 2015 7:56 pm
"Ox cart is slower than walking..."

Wish thinks wistfully about the warm meal he enjoyed last night and this morning, and sighs.

"I'm going to have to buy a lot more food if we're going to walk."

He turns back to the halfling and bows awkwardly. "Thank you, Qelline, you've been very helpful. Let us know if there's anything we can do for you in return...we don't have a lot of skills useful on a farm; we mostly are good at fighting. But we've got strong arms and can shift things pretty well, I guess. We'll probably be back again in a couple of weeks."

"No problem, always happy to help out. I may take you up on that offer of work later though, there's a lot that needs doing around here!" she says, bowing to the party, "Come Carp, back to work, the big man has probably had enough by now."
Nov 19, 2015 12:20 am
Kama dusts his hands and waves to Carp. He sniffs the air and relishes the familiar scents on a farm, which remind him of home.

"You be careful with that tunnel," he warns Carp, a serious tone in his voice. "Who will protect your mom if you're caught?"
Nov 19, 2015 12:24 am
Carp straightens up and snaps off a mock salute, "Yes, sir!
Nov 19, 2015 12:28 am
Kama lowers his voice in a conspiratorial whisper. "Later, I will want to take a look at this tunnel of yours," he says. "So be CAREFUL."

"Thundertree is practically the same as going back to Neverwinter. I fear for Gundren's life should we take the time to make the trip there and back on foot. Perhaps we should look into one or two other issues this town is having. It may earn us the coin for mounts. Perhaps the town leader is paying well to remove those Orc bandits that are troubling the area. We should talk to him next, yes?" Hollow looks at the party members to see if they agree, and/or waits for other suggestions.
Nov 19, 2015 1:10 am
Wish waves to Qelline. "We'll make sure to stop by and see how you're doing soon!"

The genasi turns to his companions again, picking up a bit of what Hollow was suggesting.
"I like the way you think, Hollow! Why walk, if we can ride? The day is young, and the town center is close by, why not check it out? We had a number of places we wanted to see in town, right? The Shrine, the Miner's Exchange...we can stop by those places after we see the townmaster. We might also see who is selling horses..."

(OoC: Did either Linene or Barthen have mounts for sale?)

Kama considers this course of action. "Wouldn't it take just as long to find, then fight those orcs?" he asks as he tries to figure out the math between taking on side jobs, then going to find Gundren, versus walking to find Gundren.

Granted, Kama is used to marching, and he often forgets that not everyone has had the same military training and conditioning he experienced.

You can purchase horses from Barthen's Provisions for the stated price in the PHB

"Maybe you're right, Kama. Let's talk to the townmaster about it anyway; talking won't take long, and we have to pass the Hall on our way to buy more food for the journey anyway. Also, it occurs to me that there's always ways for enterprising people such as ourselves to earn some coin quickly, and probably closer to Phandalin. It seems like our friend Sildar and his Lord's Alliance came up with money pretty easily; there might be more there."

Wish begins to walk back to the rest of town, toward the Townmaster's Hall. He's anxious to keep moving, to stay one step ahead of the people whom he believes are hunting him. While a horse would make him more mobile, in his mind he's relatively sure that he's lost immediate pursuit by coming to Phandalin. But emotionally he still feels the need to keep moving, to never stay in one place for too long.

"Wish is right, we can at least get the details that are available on the orcs and evaluate the situation. It may not be worth the time to go and route them, but we want horses for this journey."

She falls in pace with Wish.

The townmaster's hall has sturdy stone walls, a pitched wooden roof, and a bell tower at the back. Posted on a board next to the front door is a notice written in Common. It reads: "REWARD - Orcs near Wyvern Tor! Those of a mind to face the orc menace should inquire within." The notice bears the town's seal and an indecipherable signature.

You enter to see a fat old man sitting behind a desk, reading some sort of document. He looks up and greets you as you enter, "Hello, adventurers, I was hoping you'd have a chance to stop by. I'm Harbin Wester, current townmaster of Phandalin. I heard all about your daring rescue of Sildar. I take it you are here to help take care of the orcs that have taken up nearby?"

He doesn't bat an eye at your strange appearance. He must have already heard about your diverse backgrounds.
Nov 19, 2015 8:13 pm
"We need horses. Immediately."
Nov 19, 2015 8:15 pm
Harbin is taken aback by Xora's forwardness, he looks angry but is obviously terrified by her, and responds meekly, "I think you've come to the wrong place then, perhaps you should speak to Elmar at Barthen's Provisions, I heard he had a few horses for sale."
Nov 19, 2015 8:24 pm
"Orcs for horses. Isn't that why we're here?" I look around at the rest of the group, impatient as always.
Nov 19, 2015 8:26 pm
"I don't have any horses to give, but if you can take care of the orc threat I can give you 100 gold pieces with which to buy some horses," he says, sweat beading on his brow.
