Part 2: Phandalin

Nov 12, 2015 2:41 pm
The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins-crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars-surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.

As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.

Sildar seems much more at ease, "My friends," he says, "let us secure lodgings. I'm told the local inn is very quaint."
Nov 12, 2015 5:22 pm
Walking next to the cart, Wish waits for Sildar to elaborate. He feels very exposed out here. Wish tries to put a brave face on it, but he's always nervous when entering a new place full of people like this. Will they reject him, call him a freak and drive him out? He looks hopefully at Hollow; maybe she'll use her natural grace and charm to figure out where Barthen's Provisions and the Inn is, so they won't have to wander around like bumpkins.

Wish will also be looking for signs of any kind, indicating an inn or other establishment. *Maybe we'll be lucky and just stumble across Barthen's Provisions...*
Nov 12, 2015 5:31 pm
Kama guides the wagon along the track. "You go on ahead," he says to Sildar. "Me and the boys have to drop off these supplies to the Lionshield." He jerks his head at however many goblins took the trip with them, carrying the litter.

"Then the rest of this cargo to... uh.. where were we supposed to take them, Wish?"

Kama will go so far as to ask any passerby or resident within audible range for directions.

As you come into the town you pass a couple of small farmhouses and come upon a red-roofed building on your left. Just above the door hangs a sign of a shovel and rope.

"This is Barthen's Provisions," he points to the red-roofed building and then points to another building a few doors away, "and just up there is the Stonehill Inn. The Lionshield Coster is on the other side of town."
Nov 12, 2015 5:52 pm
"Perfect," says Kama, bringing the wagon to a halt in front of Barthen's. He orders the goblins to begin unloading, while he moves the supplies to the edge of the wagon. He is used to the manual labor and automatically tries to organize the supplies.
Nov 12, 2015 6:04 pm
People begin to stop and watch the strange party now that you're in town. They seem a bit nervous at all the odd strangers and the trio of goblins unloading the wagon. The presence of wolves does not settle them any, either.

A moment after you stop and start unloading, a skinny man with white hair and a receding hairline steps out of the shop, "Name's Elmar Barthen," he says, "owner of this here establishment, what can do ya fer?"

Suddenly he notices Sildar, "Sildar Hallwinter, my good friend!" he says, going to give him a hug and a good-natured slap on the back, "I expected you days ago! Where's Gundren at?"

Sildar's expression, which had initially been warm upon seeing his friend, darkens, "We were ambushed on the road and captured. They took Gundren somewhere else, and I don't think I'd have made it much longer if these young folks hadn't come to my rescue," he finishes, sweeping out his arm to indicate the party.

"Oh no," Barthen whispers, "what can we do?" he looks to the party, "Young heroes, you must save Gundren. I don't think they'd have killed him, he knows too much. His brothers are camped out of town somewhere, but they should be coming back to resupply any day, and I'm sure they would be willing to aid ye."

Suddenly realizing something, he steps back inside, and comes back out a moment later with 10 gold pieces for each of you, "The payment for the services you've already rendered to me,"
Nov 12, 2015 7:45 pm
"It was our pleasure to be of help, saving Sildar from a horrific end. We were told by Fezick here," indicating the goblin they first captured, "That Gundren was likely taken to an old castle. It sounded as though it was well known, but we have seen no sign of it. If there is a map or guide we would avail ourselves of them after we take our rest."

Looking off into the distance, Hollow pauses for a second then continues, "And the other Rockseekers, they are likely sought by the same people who took Gundren. If there we don't know exactly where they are, we will have to seek them out. Before or after we look for Gundren though...I'm not sure of the best course of action.
Nov 12, 2015 9:29 pm
"Thank you, Elmar." Wish pouches the coins. "We certainly plan to investigate, and follow up with Nundro and Tharden, once we finish unloading, get some beds at the Inn, and rest a bit. Could you tell us how to get to Lionshield Coster?"

Wish then takes this chance to either a) return Hollow's crossbow to her if it's in working condition, or b) talk to Barthen about repairing it if it needs repair. He'd also like to get some arrows. Does Barthen's Provisions stock weapons, or is there another place to go for that?
Nov 12, 2015 9:38 pm
Barthen shrugs, "I don't know of any old castles. The Lionshield Coster is just over there," he says, pointing to a large building just down the road about 200 feet, "Linene runs the place, a fairer lass I've never met."

Barthen's Provisions does not stock weapons, just regular supplies. For all of your weapon and armor needs you'll have to go to the Lionshield Coster. The crossbow is in fine condition.
Nov 12, 2015 10:31 pm
Kama dusts his hands and retrieves his equipment from the wagon. He spends some time listening to the conversation, but most of his attention is on the sights and sounds of the town. There is a familiarity here, as towns inevitably seem to form around a standard template. The inn should be somewhere in the center, near the green. They'll probably find a temple, too.

Yes, there is the smithy. Kama can smell the forge, and it reminds him of his youth and time spent with his father. Perhaps he will visit when there is more time.

At Wish's remark about the Lionshield Coster, Kama's attention is snapped back to the present. "C'mon, Fizbin. Let's move that cargo!" Kama points down the street towards their destination.

OOC: I believe the wagon is Gundren's and/or Barthen's, so we're leaving it here?
Nov 12, 2015 11:02 pm
Wish gratefully hands over the crossbow to Hollow, and feels a bounce in his step at having so much cash in his pocket. But then he realizes that it's not all his, and he points out that it's time to divvy up the cash. 600 cp four ways is easy: each of the four characters gets 150 coppers, which he hands over. The silver is not much more complicated; Wish gives Kama, Hollow, and Xora each 31 silvers and keeps 32 for himself.

"For you, and you, and you." He looks at what's left in Yeemik's pouch. "I'm not sure what to do with these gold teeth, though...anyone know a dentist?"

While we're at Barthen's, Wish is going to get a lantern and some oil for it, if they're available and he can afford it. If Elmar has rations, Wish will buy a few days' worth, and if the shop has some meat scraps, Wish will buy some for the wolves, too. Otherwise, that'll wait for the Inn.

(OoC: I agree; we should leave the wagon here with Elmar.)

Hollow gladly accepts the crossbow and spoils and adds the funds to her growing supply. "Barthen or the Costers will likely take the teeth in trade. Either will be capable of making the best use of them." It's not the same as it was back in Thay, no one is ignoring her the way her parents used to, and aside from Jozin and Cyril, no one is waiting on her commands. In a lot of ways this life is better, but still very different.

She enters the inn and secures two rooms, one for Seipora and herself, and one for Jozin and Cyril. She tries negotiating for the wolves to be kenneled, but the innkeeper won't have it. They are wild and feral in his eyes, no matter what the party may attest to. When she returns to them they are lounging a few steps away from Jozin and Cyril who were set to watch them. They are alert and weary of the humanoid traffic of the town, but calm overall, being well fed and free of their chains. when they see her they stand and greet her as they would a pack alpha. Hollow crouches down and accepts their greeting.

"I wish I had some way to tell you to go, the people here don't trust you. It's not their fault, civilization and the wilds are always at odds." She watches them as they come around and take seated positions in front of her. Hollow has to admire their beauty, even with the matted fur and emaciated frames. Suddenly, a pattern she never notices appears in the fur on their heads. As she traces it with her fingers, words spring to her mind, "Dag'faun telar'manon"

To the others her words are a series of growls and yips, but the wolves perk up. [b][i]"You must go outside the town friends. It isn't safe here for you,I cannot give you my protection here. I will send you meat, goat or lamb. Then you must go outside the village. You are free to go if you desire. You have been good friends."

::Hope I'm not overstepping to much. Hollow is using the first of her Invocations that she gains at level 2, Beast Speech that lets her cast Speak with Animals at will. I'll leave the wolves fully in the DM's control. I figure its no big deal since it is a story reason and Hollow will be getting a full rest in now that we are in town.::

Hollow has no issue securing rooms for her and her companions. The innkeeper, a short friendly man named Toblen Stonehill, staunchly refuses to allow the wolves anywhere near his establishment, even going so far as to tell you to keep them out of town (for their safety). Toblen gives a warning before you leave, "Avoid the Sleeping Giant tavern, the Redbrands frequent there, and you don't want to get on their bad side."

Trilena, Toblen's wife, shivers, "Bad folk, with worse tempers. Poor Thel Dendrar was murdered after he stood up to those thugs, and now the rest of his family has gone missing, wife and kids... Bad folk..." she shivers again.

After speaking to the wolves they nuzzle Hollow's hands for a moment and head out toward the woods. You're pretty sure you hear something about 'wolfmother' as they leave.

With the help of the Ander and Thistle, Elmar's helpers, you quickly get the good unloaded. He offers you three gold pieces in exchange for the teeth. Elmar once again thanks you for the help before you leave.

It is getting late, the party has the time for one more quick stop before it gets dark. Where do you want to go?

Each room is 6 SP per night, and food for a whole day is 4 SP per person.
I don't mind Hollow gaining the ability before "officially" leveling up, creates a good RP reason to have it!
The wagon is Gundren's. He was to take it off your hands when you arrived, but he's not here. Elmar will offer to hold onto it until you've rescued Gundren
Nov 13, 2015 4:37 pm
Kama will volunteer to take the goblins and the goods to the Lionshield Coster. He is fine with going on his own if the rest of the party have other errands to run.
Nov 13, 2015 4:45 pm
Wish has finished his transactions with Elmar and will accompany Kama to Lionshield Coster. He hasn't been to the Inn yet and didn't hear about the Redbrands.

(OoC: I'm assuming normal PHB prices for the hooded lantern (5 gp), oil (3 flasks - 3 sp), and rations (open question about how many days' rations we've used on our trip, but I'll be buying at least one to replace what we gave the wolves - 5 sp/day), for a total of 5 gp, 8 sp)

Edit: to accommodate the fact that we didn't use our own rations for the journey to Phandalin.

Hollow asks Kama and Wish to acquire another case of bolts for her while they are at the Costers, handing them a gold piece. Once the wolves have left she sends Jozin back to Barthen's to get her an explorers pack(10 gp). Then she sits down with Cyril and Seipora to plan out the next few days. She tells Seipora that she will need to share a room with Jozin and Cyril while she is gone looking for Gundren. She provides them 20 gp to cover their costs. Seipora objects to the idea of Hollow leaving her behind but eventually the two older women talk her down. Jozin eventually returns from his errand and they wait for the rest of their party.

::If I've done the math right, the three retainers sharing a room and paying 4 sp for food per day, they will need 18gp for 10 days, so there is a little wiggle room by giving them 20gp. Hopefully we won't be gone that long, but they should be comfortable in town until we get back::
Nov 14, 2015 12:16 am
I balk at the mention of securing rooms. "I sleep under the stars. Today, supplies. Tomorrow, we find the dwarf. It is decided."

OOC: will likely buy some things and update this when I do.
Nov 16, 2015 2:14 pm
The party is easily able to find the Lionshield Coster. Hanging above the front door of this modest trading post is a sign shaped like a wooden shield with a blue lion painted on it. The party enters the establishment and sees a pretty woman with auburn hair furiously writing in a ledger and running her hands through her hair. She is obviously agitated by something, so much so that she doesn't even notice you enter.
Nov 16, 2015 3:39 pm
Kama coughs, and clears his throat. The half-orc remains by the door, uncertain if the establishment is closed, and also to maintain a presence for the goblins outside.
Nov 16, 2015 3:53 pm
The woman looks up from her work, startled for a moment. She quickly stands up and, embarrassed, welcomes you, "Hello and welcome to the Lionshield Coster, my name is Linene Graywind. What can I do for you?"
Nov 16, 2015 4:03 pm
Kama jerks a thumb over his shoulder. "Found some stuff of yours in a goblin cave," he says. "We brought what we could, but the rest is still there." He seems ready to say more, but thinks he ought to wait and gauge her reactions before offering the goblins as guides to the hideout.
Nov 16, 2015 4:08 pm
"What?! You found our missing goods? she shouts before rushing to see what you've retrieved. After looking it over she turns back to you, "Thank you so much! This shipment is a week late, and we had no clues as to where it went. Where are the rest of them?"

"Oh you must have something for your service," she says, and without waiting for an answer she rushes to the back room, and returns a minute later with a bulging pouch which contains 50 GP, "This is all yours if you can tell me where the rest of the supplies are."

She doesn't even really notice the goblins that are standing in the corner, trying to shield themselves from view behind Kama.
Nov 16, 2015 4:15 pm
Reassured that this human woman doesn't seem to be alarmed about dealing with weird humanoids like the party, Wish adds: "There's a cave off of the Triboar Trail that contains the rest of the supplies. We brought what we could, after breaking up a gang of goblins who were attacking travelers and seizing their goods. These goblins have seen the error of their ways and could show you the way. We also blazed the trees at that point, so you could send someone with a wagon to get them at first light."
Nov 16, 2015 4:16 pm
"Fizbin and his pals can help you with that," says Kama, casually side-stepping to reveal the small goblins. He turns slightly and says, mostly for the goblins' benefit, "I'm sure they will be on their best behavior."
Nov 16, 2015 4:35 pm
Her eyes narrow when she finally notices the goblins, she walks up to them, snarling angrily, "So, it was you little bastards that stole our supplies? You're gonna take me to where they are at, with no dirty tricks, or I swear that you will live only long enough to regret crossing me!"

She is right in front of them at this point and they are cowering before her. She suddenly turns around, smiles and winks at the party, and calls to the back room for someone to come take the goblins and lock them up until she can have them guide her to the cave. She then hands the bag of coins to Kama and thanks you all once again.

"Is there anything that I could help you with? I have a variety of weapons and armor that might assist in whatever you're trying to accomplish here in town."

Everyone can now purchase weapons and armor (at 10% off!). Once you've finished your purchases it will be getting dark. Just let me know what you want to do for sleeping arrangements
Nov 16, 2015 4:49 pm
"Case of quarrels, please," says Kama, honoring Hollow's request. "And some whetstones." The half-orc transfers the coin purse to Wish, wordlessly making him the party's de-facto treasurer.

While shopping, Kama thinks to ask Linene about the area. "I don't suppose you happen to know of an old castle somewhere in the northeast, either in or near Neverwinter Woods?"

OOC: Kama will spend some of his earnings on ale and party it up at the Inn of Eternal Rest. He'll be interested in companionship, if available, but only until it's time to sleep. It's been a long day.

OOC Edit: I meant Stonehill Inn. It really has been a long day.

She looks confused, "A castle, in Neverwinter Wood? Never heard of one, but there's a lot of stuff in there that I haven't heard of."

Ale costs 4 cp per mug or 2 sp per gallon.
20 crossbow bolts will cost 9 sp
Whetstones will cost 1 cp each
I am going to amend my costs for a day's stay to 5 sp and a meal to 3 sp. I wasn't aware that they had those prices in the PHB!
Inn of Eternal Rest? Wrong game ;)
Nov 16, 2015 5:13 pm
As he shops for supplies, Wish will make conversation.

"Have you had a lot of trouble like these missing shipments here in Phandalin?"

Then, after hearing her response to Kama: "Would you point us to someone who knows the surrounding area? A local ranger or druid, perhaps? We were hired by Gundren Rockseeker to bring his supplies - it's why we didn't have room to bring back more of yours - and now we find that he's...not here. His brothers, Nundro and Tharden, do you know them? We need to talk to them about their brother..."

At this point, Wish is interested just in ammunition, for his bow, Xora's bow, and for Hollow's crossbow. He'll get 20 of each, and then split the arrows with Xora later (I think she fired more of them than Wish did; he's only down 3 from his score). He'll browse to see if there's anything extraordinary, of course.
Nov 16, 2015 5:48 pm
Lilene shakes her head in response to Wish, "This is the third shipment that was taken, but we couldn't figure out where they'd been taken before now. You'd be best served talking to Daran Edermath or Reidoth, the local druid. Daran tends an orchard on the other side of the green, used to be an adventurer like yourself. I'm not sure where Reidoth stays, bue Qelline Alderleaf is good friend of his, she could probably help you get in contact with him. You could also check with some of the people at the Miner's Exchange, just across the street."

She thinks for a moment about the Rockseeker brothers, "I haven't seen any of them in some time. Last I heard, Nundro and Tharden were camping outside of the village somewhere, but I'm not really sure where at."

I know that's a pile of information there, sorry! Hope this helps keep it straight, and for further reference
Daran: Retired adventurer, lives close by
Reidoth: Druid, not sure of location, should speak with Qelline for information
Miner's Exchange: Hangout for miners, just across the street
Nov 16, 2015 8:50 pm
"Thank you - you've been very helpful!" Wish smiles at Linene. "I'm sure we'll be back again for more supplies, and also to make sure that your got your shipment intact."

(character note: spent 1 gold, 8 silver, for 20 bolts & 20 arrows)

Then he speaks to Kama as they retrace their steps back to the Stonehill: "What do you think? Do you think we should split up to investigate? Maybe we should see what the others think."

Arriving at the Stonehill Inn, Wish looks around to see anyone he recognizes. Are Xora, Hollow, or any of her retainers in view? Whether or not they are, Wish will order something hot to eat and drink. Trail rations get old, fast.
Nov 16, 2015 8:59 pm
Kama cricks his neck with a few popping sounds. "Find that druid, is my guess," he says. "I ain't hunting around for Gundar's brothers; we can just leave a message for them at Barthen's. Maybe tomorrow we'll split to look up both the orchard and the Alderleaf farm, see what they have to say about the nature man."

As they reach the inn, Kama continues, "Right now, I need a drink. Care to join me?"
Nov 16, 2015 9:19 pm
"Absolutely. All this talking and shopping makes me thirsty. That, and being days on the road!"

Wish is buying, of course.
Nov 17, 2015 12:33 am
I help myself to several items, including enough arrows to fill my quiver to capacity, then walk out the door and wait for the others to catch up. At the mention of drinks, I grunt in agreement and follow the other two back towards the inn.

I keep an eye out for trouble as we move through town. Vigilance is key to protecting ourselves as well as other clan members.
Nov 17, 2015 2:35 pm
The night goes by smoothly, but during that time you hear a lot of rumors. Sounds like there is a lot of trouble going around lately.

1. Pip, Toblen's young son: "Qelline Alderleaf's son Carp said he found a secret tunnel in the woods, but Redbrands almost caught him."

2. Freda, a weaver: "The Redbrands hassle every business in town, except for the Phandalin Miner's Exchange. They don't want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it."

3. Narth, an old farmer: "Sister Garaele, who oversees the Shrine of Luck, recently left town for a few days, then returned wounded and exhausted."

4. Elsa, a gossipy barmaid: "Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper, is a former adventurer."

5. Lanar, a miner: "Orc raiders have been seen on the east end of Triboar Trail. The town master is looking for someone to run them off."

I was going to leave these in notes for each player, to simulate you all speaking to different people, but that would probably just create unnecessary work as you share the information.

(OoC: I'm sure that, even if we hadn't talked to people, everyone would have rushed to tell Hollow everything they could anyway. Yeah, it's a tough life, being a noble and so popular.

...I'm very glad she's on our side!)

In the morning, Wish reveals his purchases to Xora and Hollow, offering to replenish their ammunition. Any that they don't take, he will return to his pack. He's almost pathetically eager to please his friends.

"Wow! I feel better for a good night's rest in a bed for once! So...what do you think? They've got some trouble in town, what with orcs and these "Red Brands" everyone keeps mentioning. But we have few real leads on where to go to find Gundren, though Kama and I found out some people we might ask. We can ask around, see if anyone in town knows of the castle's location.

There's a druid who might know the woods that someone named Qeline seems to know - Kama said something about a farm, so he may know his way around town; we could talk to her...

...or go talk to Daran Edermath at his orchard - he used to be an adventurer, so he might know about castles in the area.

Linene at Lionshield Coster seemed to think we should check out the Miner's Exchange, too. I suppose miners have probably explored the area quite a bit.

Nundro and Tharden are supposed to be camped out nearby, too. They might have found a castle, you know, as part of their search for"
he lowers his voice "the Wave Echo cave..."

Wish looks out to see if he spots Sildar at breakfast, curious to see how he's recovered.

Kama's armor has been cleaned and oiled of all the grime from battle and the road. He spent a bit of the morning sharpening his weapons, using those moments to meditatively reflect on the day's tasks (and to shake the sleep and minor hangover from his head).

"Redbrands aren't a problem, yet," says Kama. "Yeah, it sounds like they're a local gang bullying the town, but people have been tolerating them so far. And while the orcs may be a threat, we know we've got a dwarf-in-distress held in some far-away castle that has been missing for at least a day."

A good breakfast ought to do some good. Meat and cheese, perhaps a bit of milk.

"Either Qeline or Daran are said to know of a druid named Reidoth, and I figure any druid worth his wood should be able to find us that castle. I think that's our best lead."
Nov 17, 2015 6:22 pm
Hollow is sitting with Seipora eating porridge. When she hears Kama's thoughts on breakfast she rolls her eyes. "I agree that finding the druid should be our first priority. If anyone friendly to our cause has a clue to the location of this castle and Gundren, it would be the druid. I wonder about these Redbrands though. It seems logical that this Black Spider may have a connection with them. If he's hiring goblins to ambush caravans, a gang of thugs to keep the locals in line wouldn't be too far of a stretch.".

She spoons the cereal around her bowl, contemplating for a moment, "I'm curious about why the Redbrands are leaving this Halia Thornton at the Miner's Exchange. She may prove an ally if she is able to withstand them. If the druid can't help maybe she can."
Nov 17, 2015 6:30 pm
Kama decides that in addition to meat and cheese, some of the local fruit will do nicely. There's an orchard, after all. He wolfs down the food and takes a swig of his cup, alternating takes.

"I don't know, it seems like a stretch," he says, referring to the connection between the Black Spider and the Redbrands. He places the elbow of his fork hand on the table. "But, I hadn't considered that possibility. You might have something there." He and his fork nod at Hollow.
Nov 17, 2015 6:53 pm
"So, shall we stop by the Miner's Exchange on our way out to the orchard or the...what was it, again, Kama? A farm? Do you know the way?" He slurps a bit more of his porridge. "This Halia person might know about the castle, or maybe just the druid, too."
Nov 17, 2015 7:04 pm
"The farm's on the eastern side of the town, at least according to the map someone provided us," says Kama. "Miner's exchange is on the southern side. Orchard to the west of this inn."

Kama looks out the window at the building across the street. "I think we could also talk to the Sister at the temple. She obviously ran into something out there; might be good to know what it was if we're heading out, too."
Nov 17, 2015 7:05 pm
At this point Sildar comes down from his room, and besides some bruises, he looks much better. He walks up to the table and sits down, "I'd just like to thank you again for your help yesterday, I would be dead soon if it weren't for you," he says as he pulls out a pouch and sets it down on the table, you can hear the coins rattling in it, "50 gold coins for the rescue, you've earned it."

Have you any idea where to start looking for Gundren? I was going to check in with my friend here in town, Iarno Albrek, but he isn't here... he should have arrived a couple of months ago, but he never showed up," Sildar continues, looking very worried about his friend.
Nov 17, 2015 7:20 pm
Kama pushes the coin pouch over to Wish, and nods to Sildar. What is it with Sildar and misplacing friends?

OOC: Hope no one minds me post so frequently. I'm mostly reacting to NPCs with what I think is inconsequential stuff. If it's too much for anyone, let me know and I'll rein it in.
Nov 17, 2015 10:03 pm
I'm listening in to the conversation, snacking from the pile of fruits in front of me. I've already had my breakfast of herb-roasted squirrel and some greens I pillaged from a nearby farm. I took just enough for myself in order to attract the least notice, however I was a bit more greedy with the fruit. It's not often I come across such a bountiful harvest.

"Do all your friends go missing, or just the important ones?"

Sildar gapes at Xora's bluntness for a moment before bursting into laughter, "I suppose, from your view, I don't have a very good record of being able to find my friends," he says as his laughter subsides, "I have faith that with your help we will find both Iarno and Gundren safe and sound."
Nov 18, 2015 12:42 am
"Was Iarno here to work with Gundren and his brother's like you?"
Nov 18, 2015 12:52 am
Sildar shakes his head and answers Hollow's question, "No, Iarno came for another purpose. He's a member of the Lords' Alliance, as am I, and he was sent to establish order here, but he never even arrived."
Nov 18, 2015 1:06 am
Wish ruefully adds the pouch to his pack with the rest of the party money, and he is briefly impressed with Sildar's managing to get a bag of money from somewhere since yesterday. But then his brain catches up on the conversation.

"Lord's Alliance? What's that?"
Nov 18, 2015 1:11 am
"The Lords' Alliance is a group created by the rulers here in the north. We are all over, from Waterdeep, Silverymoon, Neverwinter... We believe that only ordered societies have a real chance at surviving long against the forces of evil, and we strive to bring order and justice to uncivilized lands," he stops and, realizing that he was rambling a bit, wraps up his explanation, "Well, anyway, that's why he was here..."
Nov 18, 2015 2:05 am
"You'll probably want to look into the Redbrands, then," says Kama. "Though, I would do it carefully."
Nov 18, 2015 2:24 am
Wish chuckles at the name "Silverymoon," as he always does. A wretched hive of scum and villainy, to be sure, but that name...!
Nov 18, 2015 4:31 am
Hollow finishes her breakfast and rises from the table. "Best of luck on that then, Master Hailwinter. We shall be looking for Rockseeker. We will of course keep you updated."
Nov 18, 2015 4:38 am
Kama glances up at Hollow, taking her action as a cue that breakfast is over and it is time to start the day. He bundles up his leftovers to take on the road.

"We splitting up, or are we hitting each lead as a group?" asks Kama.
Nov 18, 2015 5:09 am
"We cover more ground if we split up, but we are vulnerable to our enemies alone. No doubt word has spread that we have arrived successfully and our ultimate goal can be easily deduced, I think we stick together. And I think Aderleaf Orchard as our first stop."
Nov 18, 2015 5:22 am
"Okay, then...uh...what? Which one: the Edermath orchard, or the Alderleaf farm?"
Nov 18, 2015 5:31 am
"Farm. I meant the Alderleaf farm who is the friend of the druid."
Nov 18, 2015 12:23 pm
"I know the way. I'll lead us there." Without acknowledging anyone else's response, I turn and start walking towards the farm at a quick pace.
Nov 18, 2015 1:56 pm
With that, the party is swept up in Xora's wake. Sildar bids you farewell, saying he has business to take care of as well, and leaves. It only takes a minute to get to the farm, where they can see a halfling woman and a small halfling child outside working around the farm. As she sees them approach she stops her work and waves the party to approach closer.

The child sees the party too, weapons and all, and instead of running away, runs right up to them, squeaking excitedly, "Are you here to take out those nasty Redbrands? You heard I found their hideout? I can show you where it's at!"

The woman, who you assume must be Qelline, chuckles and heads out to meet the party, calling in greeting, "Welcome travelers! I apologize for Carp here, he thinks he found something in the woods. The imagination of a child! What can I help you with?"

As she gets closer and notices Hollow's horns and Xora's reptilian face her eyes widen, but she quickly recovers from her shock.
Nov 18, 2015 3:45 pm
Another mention of the Redbrands. Perhaps this is something to look into, but not right now.

Kama kneels down at Carp's approach. "Maybe later," he says to the child. "Right now a friend of ours is in big trouble and we have to help him."

He lets the others speak to the mother while he absorbs the brunt of the child's excitement.
Nov 18, 2015 4:10 pm
Carp seems disappointed that you don't want his help, but is excited that the big man doesn't seem to be mean. He takes a moment of Kama's distraction as an opportunity to try to tackle the big guy playfully, but just bounces off. He is a persistent lad though and keeps trying as long as Kama doesn't tell him to stop.
Nov 18, 2015 4:17 pm
Kama clasps his hands into Carp's and now the two are locked in the classic strength-test position, where each contestant is pushing against the other's arms. He doesn't move forward and makes a show of digging in his heels and exaggerating his grunts, like he is straining with all his might to keep the young lad at bay.

Uh oh, Kama seems to be losing his footing, and the half-orc takes a step backward to set himself against Carp's progress.
Nov 18, 2015 4:27 pm
Wish chuckles amiably at the foolishness of children.
"It seems no one cares for these Red Brands! (chuckle)"
Wish introduces them (including Hollow's followers/retainters/family, if they're with us), then continues:
"We're sorry to trouble you, but we'd appreciate it if you could get us in touch with the local druid, whom I believe is called 'Reidoth'...? We're friends of Gundren Rockseeker's, and we think he's been taken by goblins to a castle in the Wood. We figure Reidoth might help us find that castle, or at least point us in the right direction."

"No one knows the area better than Reidoth! If there's a castle out there, he would know. I'd love to get you in touch with him, but he's just recently gone on a trip. He left for Thundertree, an abandoned village just along the western edge of the Neverwinter Wood. You can try to catch up if you'd like, it's easy enough to get there; just head north 'til you hit the woods and follow them northwest, you can't miss the place!"

Carp is having much fun playing and wrestling with Kama.

Map shows Thundertree is about 50 miles northwest of Phandalin
Nov 18, 2015 7:05 pm
"Thundertree!! That's gotta be 50 miles!!"

(OoC: It took us how many days to come down here from Neverwinter with Gundren's ox cart?)

Wish looks at the rest of the group. "We will want to get mounts if we're going to travel that far, and even then, it'd be a couple of days." He makes a show of checking his pack, even though he fully knows how much money he's carrying.

"...and we don't have enough coin to buy mounts for all of us at the moment."

Kama shrugs. "The wagon is Gundar's, right?" he says. "Maybe we'll bring deliver it to him, personally."
Nov 18, 2015 7:56 pm
"Ox cart is slower than walking..."

Wish thinks wistfully about the warm meal he enjoyed last night and this morning, and sighs.

"I'm going to have to buy a lot more food if we're going to walk."

He turns back to the halfling and bows awkwardly. "Thank you, Qelline, you've been very helpful. Let us know if there's anything we can do for you in return...we don't have a lot of skills useful on a farm; we mostly are good at fighting. But we've got strong arms and can shift things pretty well, I guess. We'll probably be back again in a couple of weeks."
Nov 19, 2015 12:09 am
"No problem, always happy to help out. I may take you up on that offer of work later though, there's a lot that needs doing around here!" she says, bowing to the party, "Come Carp, back to work, the big man has probably had enough by now."
Nov 19, 2015 12:20 am
Kama dusts his hands and waves to Carp. He sniffs the air and relishes the familiar scents on a farm, which remind him of home.

"You be careful with that tunnel," he warns Carp, a serious tone in his voice. "Who will protect your mom if you're caught?"
Nov 19, 2015 12:24 am
Carp straightens up and snaps off a mock salute, "Yes, sir!
Nov 19, 2015 12:28 am
Kama lowers his voice in a conspiratorial whisper. "Later, I will want to take a look at this tunnel of yours," he says. "So be CAREFUL."
Nov 19, 2015 12:51 am
"Thundertree is practically the same as going back to Neverwinter. I fear for Gundren's life should we take the time to make the trip there and back on foot. Perhaps we should look into one or two other issues this town is having. It may earn us the coin for mounts. Perhaps the town leader is paying well to remove those Orc bandits that are troubling the area. We should talk to him next, yes?" Hollow looks at the party members to see if they agree, and/or waits for other suggestions.
Nov 19, 2015 1:10 am
Wish waves to Qelline. "We'll make sure to stop by and see how you're doing soon!"

The genasi turns to his companions again, picking up a bit of what Hollow was suggesting.
"I like the way you think, Hollow! Why walk, if we can ride? The day is young, and the town center is close by, why not check it out? We had a number of places we wanted to see in town, right? The Shrine, the Miner's Exchange...we can stop by those places after we see the townmaster. We might also see who is selling horses..."

(OoC: Did either Linene or Barthen have mounts for sale?)

Kama considers this course of action. "Wouldn't it take just as long to find, then fight those orcs?" he asks as he tries to figure out the math between taking on side jobs, then going to find Gundren, versus walking to find Gundren.

Granted, Kama is used to marching, and he often forgets that not everyone has had the same military training and conditioning he experienced.
Nov 19, 2015 3:06 am
You can purchase horses from Barthen's Provisions for the stated price in the PHB
Nov 19, 2015 5:04 pm
"Maybe you're right, Kama. Let's talk to the townmaster about it anyway; talking won't take long, and we have to pass the Hall on our way to buy more food for the journey anyway. Also, it occurs to me that there's always ways for enterprising people such as ourselves to earn some coin quickly, and probably closer to Phandalin. It seems like our friend Sildar and his Lord's Alliance came up with money pretty easily; there might be more there."

Wish begins to walk back to the rest of town, toward the Townmaster's Hall. He's anxious to keep moving, to stay one step ahead of the people whom he believes are hunting him. While a horse would make him more mobile, in his mind he's relatively sure that he's lost immediate pursuit by coming to Phandalin. But emotionally he still feels the need to keep moving, to never stay in one place for too long.
Nov 19, 2015 7:15 pm
"Wish is right, we can at least get the details that are available on the orcs and evaluate the situation. It may not be worth the time to go and route them, but we want horses for this journey."

She falls in pace with Wish.
Nov 19, 2015 7:37 pm
The townmaster's hall has sturdy stone walls, a pitched wooden roof, and a bell tower at the back. Posted on a board next to the front door is a notice written in Common. It reads: "REWARD - Orcs near Wyvern Tor! Those of a mind to face the orc menace should inquire within." The notice bears the town's seal and an indecipherable signature.

You enter to see a fat old man sitting behind a desk, reading some sort of document. He looks up and greets you as you enter, "Hello, adventurers, I was hoping you'd have a chance to stop by. I'm Harbin Wester, current townmaster of Phandalin. I heard all about your daring rescue of Sildar. I take it you are here to help take care of the orcs that have taken up nearby?"

He doesn't bat an eye at your strange appearance. He must have already heard about your diverse backgrounds.
Nov 19, 2015 8:13 pm
"We need horses. Immediately."
Nov 19, 2015 8:15 pm
Harbin is taken aback by Xora's forwardness, he looks angry but is obviously terrified by her, and responds meekly, "I think you've come to the wrong place then, perhaps you should speak to Elmar at Barthen's Provisions, I heard he had a few horses for sale."
Nov 19, 2015 8:24 pm
"Orcs for horses. Isn't that why we're here?" I look around at the rest of the group, impatient as always.
Nov 19, 2015 8:26 pm
"I don't have any horses to give, but if you can take care of the orc threat I can give you 100 gold pieces with which to buy some horses," he says, sweat beading on his brow.
Nov 19, 2015 11:44 pm
Hollow enters the room and takes a seat across the desk from the tow master, like she belonged there and it would be silly to suggest otherwise. "Forgive Xora's exuberance, Townmaster Harbin, she is not accustomed to dealing with delay once her goal becomes clear. We are looking for our friend Gundren, who is still being held by the people that captured Sildar. To that end we seek information and funds. It is our hope that you can provide that to us. We have heard a rumor of a castle near to Phandalin. No one in the town seems to know about it. So now we are here. Have you any infomation that might be helpful? Baring that, we are interested in the coin you are offering and would like to know more about these orcs you wanted eliminated? Numbers and locations, then any other information that may be pertinent."

Good work Xora, he's sweating, he's off balance. Don't press to hard, but press your questions. I will deflect and play friendly. I don't trust this man much. Hollow sends this message telepathically. She is suggesting a little good cop/bad cop.
Nov 19, 2015 11:49 pm
Kama remains by the door in a military at-ease stance. His arms are folded across his chest and he watches the Townmaster intently, studying him.
Nov 20, 2015 12:20 am
I shake my head at the intrusion and slam my fist against the desk. "Stop it!" I glare at her for a moment as several draconian curses are heard in my mind, then I turn back to the town master. "You will answer all her questions, out loud, quickly and we will be on our way." I cross my arms in front of me and wait for his response.
Nov 20, 2015 12:30 am
Wish is unsure how to navigate this interaction, and so he remains silent, watching their bickering play out.
Nov 20, 2015 12:32 am
Harbin shakes uncontrollably, staring at Xora's reptilian face in terror. "I suppose I could.... uh... loan you some.... uh.... coin... until you get back, that is..."
Nov 20, 2015 12:39 am
I nod. "That is acceptable."
Nov 20, 2015 2:47 am
Harbin leads you over to Barthen's and purchases four horses, making it very clear that this is just a loan! Elmar is very amused by how you've cowed the townmaster. Before he leaves, Harbin indicates that the orcs that he spoke of are about 50 miles to the northeast, in the foothills of the Sword Mountains, in Wyvern Tor. He hints that it would be a good way to start paying off your debt to him before scurrying away.

Wyvern Tor is not visible on the map I gave you, but it is just south of Old Owl Well, just before you hit the mountains.
Nov 20, 2015 2:49 am
As you head back into the street, you see four armed ruffians waiting for you. All of them are humans wearing grimy red cloaks, their hands on their weapons as they watch you. One of the ruffians spits on the ground. "Time for you to move on, strangers. Give us your stuff, and be on your way."

As people notice the confrontation they make hast in getting out of the way. Soon the street is empty, save for you and the thugs.
Nov 20, 2015 3:16 am
I pay them little attention until they attempt to block our path. So m any delays. How will I prove my worth when so much of the day is wasted jabbering on? I wave my arm at them dismissively. "Get out of my way, pathetic humans."

Turn around, RUN away, and tell whoever it is you sniveling curs work for to stay hidden under whatever rock they currently dwell beneath and we will go about our business and let them live." Ruffian 2 shaken by Kama's attack, barely notices a stream of lighting coming his way. Though he manages to avoid the worst of it, it's still too much for him in his weakened state and he falls to the ground, quite still.

Ruffian 3, seeing his companions taken down with contemptuous ease, turns and flees as fast as he can.

Now that the chaos has died down, you can hear footsteps approaching quickly. You see an beautiful elven woman in fine white robes come around the corner of the nearest building. She takes a moment to see what's going on before rushing up to Hollow and beginning to pray. She holds her hands over Hollow's body and suddenly Hollow's eyes pop open, and she is feeling much better Healed for 8 HP.

Seeing that Hollow is feeling better, the elven woman takes a step back, "I'm glad I got here in time. Someone came and got me when they saw the Redbrands taunting you, and I rushed over as fast as I could. My name is Sister Garaele, priestess of Tymora, and I tend her shrine here in town. I'm glad you're ok, but this is going to get bad very quickly. Now that someone has actually stood up to them, the whole gang is going to become even more violent."

There is the sound of more footsteps approaching, you turn to see Sildar walking in your direction. He surveys the carnage and nods, impressed, "Looks like you've proven your skills yet again," he says, and then turns to Sister Garaele, grinning, "It's good to see you, Sister."

"Have you decided where to start your search for Gundren?" he asks once the greetings are out of the way.
Nov 20, 2015 3:54 pm
Kama spits, ignoring Sildar's question for the moment. He leans on his maul. "I hoped we could have delayed this Redbrand threat," he says to Sister Garaele. His voice has a hint of irritation at this turn of events. "You're the sister, then? Heard you had a spot of trouble out of town. From the Redbrands?"

Garaele shakes her head, "No, I had a run-in with some goblins on my way back from Conyberry. Managed to get away but not before I got a couple scrapes, the people in town worry too much for me. I went to see a banshee that resides near there, but she was not in her lair... pity, I had an important question for her," she says, and then turns thoughtful for a moment, "Perhaps, when you have some more time you would like to try? Maybe you'd have better luck than I. I don't have much in the way of gold, but I could part with some potions for your trouble."
Nov 20, 2015 4:20 pm
Kama blinks. "Um, sure," he says, rather flabbergasted at the offer. He fishes out 5 gold coins. "And hey, we just met, and this may seem crazy, but here's some coinage. For the temple, maybe?" Good fortune, indeed.

"Wait. Banshee?"
Nov 20, 2015 4:44 pm
Wish helps Hollow to her feet, and then steps back with alacrity, in case she's in one of her...tetchy "I-just-almost-died-get-your-hands-off-me" moods. As a way of avoiding facing her irritation, he hand-clasps Sildar and replies "We...uh...Xora just got us these horses, and we were about to ride out to find the druid, to see if he knows the location where the goblins have taken Gundren."
Nov 20, 2015 4:55 pm
Garaele accepts the coins gratefully, "I will see that this gets put to good use, thank you. Yes, Agatha the banshee has been around for longer than anyone can remember. She generally minds her own business, and sometimes even answers questions for people for the right price. She was a powerful magic-user in life, you see, and a diviner at that."

Sildar looks impressed again, "The druid, eh? A good choice, Reidoth would probably know of anything like a castle in the area, no one knows the woods better than he. Where's he at now?"

"I suppose," he says to Sister Garaele, "but we're kinda stretched thin as it is. We need to find a dwarf that has been captured and taken somewhere north, and they're already about two days ahead of us. If this ban.. banshee is on the way and won't delay us, delivering a brief message may not be a problem. I... I hope if we do this, you've got the price to ease the banshee's expectations? And that you're okay with bringing her answer after we've found the dwarf?"

Kama seems uncomfortable at the prospect of willingly meeting a banshee. He's heard stories!

Xora and Wish are clueless on Agatha's history.

Kama knows that Agatha's lair is a short way into the Neverwinter Wood, near a now abandoned village called Conyberry. She was supposedly a very powerful elven wizard in her time. She was known to protect the village of Conyberry on occasion, and was known to sometimes trade with travelers.

"If you're headed to Thundertree then she's out of the way, on the other end of the forest, and it sounds like your friend needs help. You can return to me if you get a chance later on after your troubles are over," Garaele responds to Kama's inquiry.

Sildar nods at what Wish has said, "Yes, he does seem to be out that way quite often from what I hear."
Nov 20, 2015 6:07 pm
"So who are these Red Cloaks or Red Brands or whatever they are? What issue could they have with us, or was it just bullies looking for someone to push around?" Wish asks both of them, trying to stay focused, and not gush and fawn all over what he perceives as his new friend Garaele. Why was he ever nervous about being in the city? Meeting so many nice people almost makes up for the fact that there are hired killers out to get him, and he's been fighting for his life several times during this trip!
Nov 20, 2015 6:17 pm
"They're just a bunch of bullies and thugs, looking to show off how tough they are. They don't have much opposition around here, so any newcomer who can handle a blade or sling a spell is a threat to them. They don't want anyone taking their fun away from them," Sildar says, obviously disgusted by the thought of them.

"Sounds about right," Garaele says, agreeing with Sildar wholeheartedly.
Nov 20, 2015 6:29 pm
"These types don't belong in society. They will be driven out with force. We will do this once our previous tasks are complete. It is decided. I turn towards the other group members in anticipation of our next move, which I assume is to find the dwarf.
Nov 20, 2015 6:34 pm
"Huh, now that you mention it, I remember hearing stories about an elf named Agatha," says Kama. "But, she wasn't a banshee in them."

The half-orc looks between Sildar and Garaele. "Tch, I hate leaving things vulnerable here," he says, annoyance tinting his voice. "I hoped the Redbrands could be dealt with at a later time, but it seems we've placed you in a bad spot." Kama is torn, as he does not want the town to suffer retribution for their actions while they're away.

Wish makes ready to mount his steed, then considers. "Sister...? We will be on the road, and probably will run into trouble before we return here to Phandalin. To be blunt, there will be blood." He pauses a moment, to recover from the savage imagery this evokes. "Do you have any medical supplies that you could share with us, for a, uh, commensurate donation to the Shrine?"

(OoC: If Wish seems awkward or stilted or obvious or offensive, that's intentional. I'm trying to play his lack of charisma in that way, without being too obnoxious as a player. If it gets too much, please let me know.)
Nov 20, 2015 6:45 pm
Garaele smiles at Wish, amused by his awkwardness, "You appear to be on a noble quest, so I suppose I could afford to part with a couple potions," she says and reaches into her robe, pulling out two vials of red liquid, "No payment required, I just ask that when you return you come and see me to assist me with Agatha. I would give more, but we may need them in the coming days if the Redbrands ar as angry as I think they'll be."
Nov 20, 2015 7:20 pm
Hollow gets to her feet slowly. She is obviously embarrassed and frustrated by the encounter with the thugs. "Thank you, priestess. I owe you much for your kindness. As my compatriots said, we had hoped to journey to Thundertree before dealing with the Redbrands, if at all in truth. Now I'm not sure I can leave without dealing with this. If we aren't here when they come looking for payback, others may have to bare the burden."

She stares down the road that leads toward the inn. Seipora and Cyril can be seen watching from a distance. "What do you think friends? We risk Gundren's life if we pause to deal with these criminals. However I can't shake the feeling there is a connection between these two troubles."
Nov 20, 2015 7:33 pm
Kama considers this. "Do you think Gundren's more valuable to them alive than dead? It might buy us some time."
Nov 20, 2015 8:43 pm
Wish nods, impressed. "That's pretty good thinking, Kama! They did capture him, rather than trying to cook him like Sildar - no offense, Sildar - or just kill him outright. I think Sildar is right - they want him to find out about...uh...you know..."

Wish hates to abandon Gundren, but at the same time, he hates that the bullies will hurt people because of him.

"So...what do you think? Where do we go to beard these Red clowns?"
Nov 20, 2015 8:44 pm
"I don't know if he still lives. I hope he is smart enough to make himself valuable. Plus, the needs of the many are usually greater than the few. I don't want to be the reason for undeserved reprisals by the Redbrands."

"So now we hunt Redbrands? Who is their leader?"
Nov 20, 2015 9:18 pm
Sildar shrugs, "We don't know much about him. They call him Glasstaff, but even the ones that we've spoken to won't say more than that."
Nov 20, 2015 9:32 pm
Hollow steps up next to Sildar and lowers her voice so that the group may hear but not anyone who may be lurking unseen. "What about the woman who runs the Miner's Exchange, Hilda Thornton. We heard rumor that she is singular among the merchants in that she remains unmolested by the Redbrands. Do you know her well? Is she just that tough? Can she be trusted? Is she the paramour of this Glasstaff, or could she be Glasstaff?"
Nov 20, 2015 9:42 pm
"I really don't know why but they steer clear of her," he responds, "Your guess is as good as mine on this one."
Nov 20, 2015 9:43 pm
"Their leader? Why not just eliminate all of them?"

Wish shakes his head, attempting to shake the visions of slaughter out of his mind.

"Of...of course, we should look for a leader. If you cut off the head, the body withers and dies. Without, you know, actually dying...from being killed..."

Wish trails off.

"Uh...got any directions, Sister? We could just run after these guys, or talk to Hilda - Hilda? Halla? Halia? Halia - thanks, Hollow, I didn't remember her name - over at the Miner's Exchange. Even the kid was saying something about these Red guys..."

"Well, then I guess we should go talk to her. And revisit the farm to talk to the child and learn what he knows. Perhaps he picked something up that the Brands didn't think was of consequence. The tunnel he found may provide a stealthy approach we could take advantage of. But I think we should make all haste so that we can maintain whatever advantage we may hold."

Sister, I will send one of my people to you with this ring. Whatever healing potions you were willing to part with you shall give to them. They will bring them to us so we can complete out tasks."
Nov 20, 2015 9:58 pm
Wish hands Hollow one of the healing potions Sister Garaele gave them already and swings into the saddle, riding down the street to the Miner's Exchange. He really doesn't like horses very much, but he's managed to learn to ride them tolerably well.

They he hitches the horse out front, dismounts, and walks in with the others.
Nov 20, 2015 10:54 pm
Kama asks Sister Garaele, "Who lives at that manor to the east?"

"OOC: Don't know if I would have been able to ask before we went to the miner's exchange.
Nov 20, 2015 10:58 pm
"The Manor has been empty since Phandalin was resettled," she replies.

[I'll try to get another post up a bit later tonight ]
Nov 20, 2015 11:15 pm
Kama nods. He looks down the street leading to the abandoned manor, thoughts swirling in his head. "Mind yourselves," he says to the group. "The Sleeping Giant is supposed to be their watering hole, and it stands to reason that the two that escaped have probably reported there."

Then the half-orc begins to search the two fallen bodies, looking for any clues and useful items. On occasion he casts a glance down the road, half-expecting a contingent of red-caped hooligans marching his way.
Nov 20, 2015 11:48 pm
Kama is able to find two short swords, two sets of studded armor, four daggers and 7 gp. They don't appear to carry any identifying things besides their cloaks.

As the party enters the Miner's Exchange you see there are a couple of men standing over a map showing claimed dig sites. There is also a sharp-featured woman sitting behind a desk, reading through notes and ledgers.
Nov 20, 2015 11:56 pm
Kama looks to the party to see if anyone wants the equipment. Otherwise he elects to donate the spoils and gold to the shrine; Sister Garaele should be able to fetch something for its sale. Kama does keep the daggers, however, as they would be useful for any of the party members. If need be, Kama will help move the bodies to where they have to go (assuming the shrine takes care of that).
Nov 21, 2015 12:02 am
Sister Garaele gladly accepts anything you give her and assists with pulling the bodies off to the side of an alley to be covered with their cloaks until someone can collect the bodies.
Nov 21, 2015 5:58 pm
Back at the Miner's Exchange, Wish approaches the sharp-faced woman. "Halia Thornton, I presume? I'm Wish Vathuni; I'm new in town, and just making the rounds, getting to know people" (he checks himself surreptitiously for any bloodstains) "and the places of business. Miner's Exchange, huh? Tell me what that is."

He clears his throat, realizing belatedly that this may be forward. "Please. If you don't mind and it wouldn't tax too much of your valuable time."
Nov 21, 2015 6:09 pm
"Yes, I am Halia Thornton, and I run the Miner's Exchange. We keep track of who's get rights to what digsites around here as to avoid unnecessary bloodshed," she says, looking at Wish impatiently, then she notices the dust and bloodstains on the party's clothing, "I do have something that some noble adventurer's could help me with, however. Would you be interested in helping me take out the Redbrands? They're a nuisance, and while they don't bother me much personally they are preying on the poor folk of this wonderful town."

She sits with a beatific smile on her face, waiting for a response.
Nov 21, 2015 7:07 pm
"Oh?" Wish looks at the others, trying not to grin. "I think we might be interested, yes. How could we help? What can you tell us about them?"
Nov 21, 2015 10:58 pm
Kama reminds outside the Miner's Exchange, just by the door. He lets the eloquent folk handle the discussions. Instead, he watches the road, anticipating a Redbrand reprisal any minute now. His hand rests on the pommel of one of the daggers he took from those thugs, now slipped into his belt.
Nov 22, 2015 12:08 am
Hollow is a little taken aback by Halia's remarks, but recovers quickly.

"We to have had some trouble with the Redbrands recently. In addition to dear Wish's request to know as much as you can tell us about them, I would like to understand why it is that they don't harass you to the same extent as the other merchants. What history do you have with them?"
Nov 22, 2015 12:54 am
I stare down Halia, attempting to read her responses in order to determine their veracity.

"The Redbrands are a thorn in the side of this town and it would be a great service for us all if you were to take care of them for us, I don't know any more than what's common knowledge in these parts. I will give you 100 gold pieces if you kill the one known as Glasstaff and bring me any correspondence that you may find as proof, unread of course," she explains he offer, then turns to Hollow and pulls a crossbow out from behind her desk, "they tried exactly one time to bully me and it turned out badly for them. That's the thing about bullies, if you show that you're tougher than them they will leave you alone."

It sounds to Xora as if Halia is being totally honest in what she is saying.
Nov 22, 2015 7:24 am
Wish's eyes sparkle at the thought of another 100 gold, but he eyes the crossbow warily. "Yes, we feel the same way about bullies....which is why we want to help take care of them. Where do you think this Glasstaff is? Where should we start?"
Nov 22, 2015 7:46 am
Kama briefly turns his head, but says nothing and remains outside. For him, the next destination would be the Sleeping Giant, where they can "coax" some information out of the attendees.
Nov 22, 2015 4:00 pm
"As I'm sure you've heard the Redbrands spend most of their time at the Sleeping Giant, though I've heard they have also been seen skulking around the Tresendar Manor in town."
Nov 22, 2015 8:34 pm
Hollow tenses for a moment when the crossbow appears but relaxes when she sees Halia isn't threatening the party with it. "Yes, we are aware the Sleeping Giant is where they congregate."
Nov 23, 2015 1:10 am
Wish is eager to go, but is convinced that Halia could communicate more, if only they ask in the right way. "What can you tell us about Glasstaff? I don't want to get the wrong person by mistake and not get paid. Oh, and I don't want to kill random people. Yeah, that too."
Nov 23, 2015 1:32 am
"The only things I know are that Glasstaff is a man, the leader of the Redbrands, and is named so for the glass staff he always carries. My guess is that he is a mage of some kind," she responds to your inquiries.
Nov 23, 2015 3:44 am
I snort derisively but manage to keep my thoughts to myself. How typical that there is no definitive information to be found.
Nov 23, 2015 4:00 am
Kama maintains his watch of the street. Mage. Figures. He begins thinking about counter-measures and tactics.
Nov 24, 2015 2:48 am
Halia waits for you to mull over the information, "Do you accept or not? I don't have all day for this..."
Nov 24, 2015 3:15 am
"I don't either. Go back to your business. We are done here and will let you know when the task is complete."
Nov 24, 2015 6:41 am
"Yeah, we'll get him, and his Red Capes, too."

Wish winks at the miners poring over the map and heads out with the others, mounts up and begins to ride his horse slowly down the street, toward Destiny.

...that, and the Shrine and Inn, where he'll turn right to head down to the Sleeping Dragon.
Nov 24, 2015 6:43 pm
The Sleeping Giant is a run down and dirty building on the east side of town. There are two men in red cloaks, similar to those that the others wore, standing on the porch. They watch you for a moment before heading inside. As you get closer six armed men step out. Three of them have crossbows trained on you and three have short swords drawn, they are about twenty feet away at this point.

One of the sword-wielders speaks up, "Looks like the tough guys came to pay us a visit, eh? We'll give you one more chance to give us your stuff and get yourselves out of town before we have to hurt you."
Nov 24, 2015 11:14 pm
Kama drops the reins of his horse, having led the animal through town thus far. He unslings his pack as he stalks towards the men, and holds it before him as though giving it up. But he keeps moving on foot, closing the distance.

OOC: Editing to mention that I'm on foot. Missed the fact that we already had the horses. I hadn't RPed that I was using a horse, so could I assume that I have been leading the animal all this time?

As they ride up and the Redbrands issue their challenge, Wish looks to see if there's a water barrel or other source of water nearby.

One of the great things about horses, Wish thinks, is how big they are. Following Kama's lead, he turns his horse's head and dismounts...but he does it so that he comes down on the other side of his horse, Giuseppe (he's just named it), from where the Sleeping Giant and the Redbrands are (hopefully this gives him some cover bonus to AC), which also happens to be the side with his bow. He moves slowly, peacefully, but as he does so, he thinks intensely at Hollow: *Hit these jerks hard and we'll mop 'em up...*
Nov 25, 2015 12:08 am
The red cloaked speaker calls out when Kama is about 10 feet away, "That's far enough, drop your things and go!"
Nov 25, 2015 12:19 am
"No." I attempt to drop an arrow at that man's foot. Not to kill him, but if I leave him a little broken, who's gonna complain? I concentrate intently on him, focusing my hunter's instincts on memorizing his movements and scent.

OOC: Hunter's Mark on that guy- You choose a creature you can see within range and mystically mark it as your quarry. Until the spell ends, you deal an extra 1d6 damage to the target whenever you hit it with a weapon attack, and you have advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) or Wisdom (Survival) check you make to find it. If the target drops to 0 hit points before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature.

Xora smoothly draws her bow and releases the arrow, which sinks deep into the porch between the ruffian's feet. They are very impressed

Wish doesn't have as much luck in his shot and it goes far wide, slamming into the side of the building ten feet to his left.

The crossbow users return fire quickly but the first two shots go harmlessly wide and the third on sinks into the side of Wish's horse (4 Damage). The horse whinnies in pain and runs off around the corner, leaving Wish dangerously exposed.

The ruffians will be labeled thus: From left to right, those with crossbows will be labeled Crossbow 1, 2, and 3 and the sword wielders will be Sword 1, 2, and 3.

Now that the readies actions are resolved we will roll for regular initiative, ignore the other rolls for the Sword attacks, they were made in error.

Crossbow 1 and 2 fire again on Xora but their hands, still shaking from her display of prowess with her bow, can't line up the shot properly and they fire far wide of any potential targets.

Crossbow 3 once again, proves his skill as his shot grazes Wish, slicing across the side of his ribs (4 piercing damage).

Sword 1 and 2 rush Kama, trying to bring him down before he can draw the massive weapon strapped on his back. Kama sidesteps the first blow, but is caught off guard by the sudden assault and is hit three times in quick succession , 7, 7, and 5 piercing damage: 19 total)

Sword 3 follows behind the volley of bolts and does a sweeping strike toward Xora's midsection which she easily draws back from, but his follow-up, a quick stab to the stomach digs in painfully (4 piercing damage).

Crossbow 1-3 are still on the porch: 20 feet from Hollow, Wish, and Xora, and 10 feet from Kama. Sword 1 and 2 are on Kama, and Sword 3 is on Xora.
I'm assuming Kama is going to use his Relentless Endurance trait, so I didn't play out knocking him unconscious. If my assumption is incorrect, let me know and I'll update this!

Kama liked it better when they were going up against goblins.

The half-orc grunts as the short swords pierce through his chain vest, not just in pain but also in the knowledge that he's going to have to get that repaired... again. The thought is enough that the orcish blood in him boils over, and the battlelust dilates his pupils. Kama's nostrils flare as a low rumbling growl escapes his throat, rising in volume until it culminates in a spit-ridden roar.

Kama looks for something to direct his new-found anger and resilience upon, and like the old wives' tales of bulls, those flowing red cloaks next to him immediately attract his attention.

The greataxe seems to magically appear in his hands as Kama brings the weapon about with practiced ease, muscle-memory taking over and adrenaline supercharging his body. The blade swings around hungrily at the two Redbrands, seeking blood to oil itself with.

OOC: Relentless Endurance, oh yes. Also using Action Surge to attack twice this round, and Second Wind as my bonus action.

Relentless Endurance: When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Second Wind: You have a limited well of stamina that you can draw on to protect yourself from harm. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your fighter level. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Action Surge: Starting at 2nd level, you can push yourself beyond your normal limits for a moment. On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and a possible bonus action. This will be directed at Sword1 again if the first attack does not down him, otherwise it will be applied to Sword2.

Edit: Don't know if I hit with any of my attacks (doubtful), but just in case, re-rolling 1s for damage due to Great Weapon Fighting style.

Kama's attack catches Sword 1 in the ribs, crushing them beneath the mighty blow. Sword 1 crumples to the ground, gasping for breath. Sword 2 gets a slightly panicked look on his face as Kama turns to face him.

Wish dashes to Xora's side, and thrusts his blade at Sword 3, but his blow is deftly parried by the thug. Keeping an eye out he is able to see a barrel of water on the right side of the porch, next to Crossbow 3.

Crossbow 1, 2, and 3 are still on the porch, reloading crossbows. Sword 1 is down and dying, Sword 2 is engaged with Kama, and Sword 3 is engaged with Xora and Wish.

Xora attempts to disarm Sword 3, but he sees the move coming and easily foils her attempt.

Sword 2 works his blade around Kama's defenses, scoring a solid hit to his chest (5 Damage). Already wounded, Kama can't handle any more and is knocked to the ground.

Sword 3 is more distracted by Xora's attempt to disarm him than he expected and is unable to score a blow.

Crossbow 1 fires a bolt at Hollow, who has just come upon the scene. The bolt hits her in the side (4 damage) and digs deep but misses her vital organs.

Crossbow 2 misses Wish by a wide margin.

Crossbow 3 fires a bolt that flies by Sword 3 to hit her solidly in the thigh (6 damage)

Sword 2: Wounded and standing over Kama's body (8 damage)
Sword 3: Unharmed, engaged with Xora and Wish
Crossbow 1-3: Unharmed on the porch, reloading crossbows.
Kama will have to start making death saves!

Seeing the need to end this quickly, Hollow casts two spells. The first is Hex, with a gesture and a few words, Swordsman 2 begins to glow as if the focus of the light from a distant star. Then, with harsh guttural voice she unleashes another Eldritch Blast.

Sword 2 attempts to leap out of the way of Hollow's spell but it catches him right in the chest burning a hole right through and destroying his spine. He drops to the ground, quite dead.

Sword 3 is momentarily distracted by the sickening smell of burnt flesh as Sword 2 is destroyed. He turns around, mouth open wide just in time to catch Xora's arrow in his mouth where it quickly exits out the back of his neck, slamming into the building about 2 inches to the left of Crossbow 2's head. He falls dead at her feet.

Negated the disadvantage due to cinematic awesomeness as well as a dash of pity ;)

Wish moves like a rushing wave and crashes down on his foe, blade piercing him all the way to the hilt, he rips the blade out and shoves the dying man out of his way as he prepares to destroy his next foe.

Seeing their companions fall around them so quickly Xbow 1 and 2 rush into the Sleeping Giant and you hear the locking bar come down, blocking you all out but for the tiny windows, too small for you to see through.

100 xp for all!
Combat over!
Dec 2, 2015 4:03 pm
Kama can't remember the last time he tasted dirt. Though, he can't remember much of anything right now.

OOC: Do I need to roll one more death save now that combat is over?
Dec 2, 2015 4:07 pm
Only if someone fails their DC 10 Medicine check. This check can be made with advantage, if two people work together have the more skilled individual roll with advantage.
Dec 2, 2015 4:54 pm
Wish darts his glance around, assessing whether there are windows in the Sleeping Giant that would allow sniping, and does not like what he sees. He rushes over to Kama when he realizes he's not getting up on his own. "He's still alive - barely. Help me!"
Dec 3, 2015 3:57 am
Hollow rushes to Kama's side and knee slides coming to a stop by his head. She retrieves one of the red vials and uncorks it and pours it down Kama's throat.
Dec 3, 2015 4:39 am
Wish grunts with effort as he half carries, more than half drags the enormous half-orc away from the windows as the potion takes effect, feeling an itch of an expected quarrel between his shoulder blades the whole time. Once he judges they're out of crossbow range, Wish stops to catch his breath and checks to see whether Kama is awake or not. *Selune's tears, he's heavy!*

Wish gives him a quick breakdown of what happened, gesturing back toward the tavern and the dead bodies lying in the dust there. "The rest of them ran inside and slammed the door...."
Dec 3, 2015 1:52 pm
You don't hear anything else from inside the Sleeping Giant. The street is empty but for the corpses of the men you killed.
Dec 3, 2015 2:21 pm
Whispering to the party, Hollow says, "Should we retreat for now? Or draw them out? Not that I'm opposed to a full on assault. We have another potion if you need it Kama. "
Dec 3, 2015 4:02 pm
"Two left, barred door," says Kama, reiterating what they're up against. "Don't know if there are more inside, but given the way bullies and thugs think, it's likely we saw the lot of them out on the porch."

He remains seated, slowly working some life back into his muscles. His body was resting, and it isn't quite ready to give that privilege up just yet.

"Do you think they'd be open to parley?"

A thought occurs to him. "Maybe someone needs to check the back door."

As you're discussing your options you can hear a man yelling inside, followed by a shriek and a loud thud. Something is going on inside, sounds like somebody got hurt.
Dec 4, 2015 8:03 pm
"That someone will be me," growls Kama at the sound of activity within, and he picks himself up off the ground. "I'll take that potion, Hollow," he says as he heads around the eastern side of the Sleeping Giant, to the back.

Kama is assuming there is a back door, of course, and that perhaps the thugs inside haven't yet thought to bar that entrance.
Dec 4, 2015 8:16 pm
Hollow, as promised, hands over the potion and Kama works his way to the other side of the building, where he does indeed find a back door. he can hear no sound coming from the other side.
Dec 4, 2015 8:23 pm
Kama down the potion, wincing at its taste. Suspecting that the cry and thud was further conflict within the building, he readies a handaxe and tries to see if the back door can be opened.

Kama easily opens the door, revealing the interior of the tavern and a very surprised thug standing right in front of him. It seems he had just thought of opening the door when Kama had opened it. You can see the other thug about 20 feet off to your left, standing over the bloody body of the barkeep. The barkeep is gasping for breath, so he is still alive, but not for long.

Going to give Party the initiative for surprising the people inside! You may all retroactively choose who had followed Kama around back and who stayed up front.
Dec 4, 2015 9:07 pm
Kama had planned on throwing his handaxe, but given the close proximity he decides to use his two-handed maul instead. He steps inside the tavern to clear the doorway and sweeps his maul at the thug's legs.

OOC: Not sure how wounding to incapacitate works, but I'm trying to ensure we have at least one of them alive to interrogate.

1d10+4 : (8) + 4 = 12

Dec 6, 2015 5:10 pm
Kama swings his Maul at the thugs legs, there is a loud cracking sound as the Maul connects and the thug lands on the ground holding his shattered knee.

Hollow's spell connects with the door, turning it into little more than kindling.

Xora and Wish still have a round
Dec 6, 2015 6:05 pm
Wish will race through the door and across the room to attack Xbow 2 (whom I think is at the very edge of his movement).

Dec 7, 2015 10:56 pm
Kama and Wish are able to stabilize the barkeep, but his breathing is shallow and now that he's in someone's care he passes out on the floor. Still wounded but not at immediate risk of dying.
Dec 7, 2015 11:49 pm
Kama sighs in relief. "We'll have to get him to the temple, or bring the Sister here," he says, absently.

He obviously has something else on his mind, however, and he leaves the barkeep to approach the thug with the broken leg. Kama binds the man's hands behind the back, and once secured rummages through his belongings to remove any weapons or items of value.
Dec 7, 2015 11:54 pm
Kama is able to tie the man's hands up and finds two daggers, a short sword, and three gold pieces on the thug.
Dec 8, 2015 8:08 am
Wish will drag the bodies into the tavern and search them.
Dec 8, 2015 8:25 am
Now that the living thug is bound and not going anywhere, Kama returns his attention to the injured barkeep. He gathers the man and lifts him into a fireman-carry. "I'm taking him to see the Sister," he says to the group, momentarily forgetting her name if it was ever mentioned to him.

Kama then gives a wink as he exits through the front door. "I'm sure you'll have fun with the chap on the floor over there."
Dec 8, 2015 3:41 pm
Kama is able to transport the wounded man to Sister Garaele who is glad to take care of the wounded man.

Wish searches the men to find four short swords, seven daggers, three crossbows, 31 crossbow bolts, and 13 gold, 8 silver, and 24 copper.
Dec 8, 2015 3:54 pm
I fill my quiver with arrows and turn toward the others. "Now what?
Dec 8, 2015 4:24 pm
Hollow thinks for a moment. She moves to the bar and gets a mug of ale and brings it to the captive thug. Casting Charm Person on the thug she squats down next to him and begins to question him.

"Alright, friend let's talk. Our other friends are going to see to the barkeeper now. You will be next, in the mean time I need to know about Glassstaff. Where is he, who and what is he and what is he planning? Can you help me out?" She flashes a smile and turns on the charm.

::DC 14 will save. We aren't in combat so I don't know if he gets advantage or not, so I leave that for the DM to decide. Hollow has no intention of helping him, but she makes it look good::

Rolls

Deception - (1d20+4)

(17) + 4 = 21

Dec 8, 2015 4:37 pm
The thug grimaces with pain but is entranced by Hollow's exotic appearance and smooth voice, "Glasstaff is our leader, a human wizard. None of us know his real name, but he pays us to keep adventurers away from town. He may be in our hideout at the moment, under Tresendar Manor. He stays in the western chambers, but if you're going to go speak to him make sure you're careful, place is crawling with bugbears and some sort of nasty little eye monster that guards the lower portion of the cellars."
Dec 8, 2015 4:44 pm
Kama donates the thug's three gold pieces to Sister Garaele. He will wait with the barkeep until the man wakes. Kama has questions, and he suspects the man has heard much while hosting the Redbrands in the tavern.
Dec 8, 2015 5:56 pm
As the thug is spilling his secrets to Hollow, Wish is intentionally avoiding looking at her, so that he is not entranced by her insidious charm. He collects the weapons, selects a crossbow for himself and a set of 20 bolts. He notes the money and pockets it so that he can distribute it to the group later. Then he looks for a sack or barrow he could use for all the weapons, as they should be turned in to Townmaster Harbin or sold to Lionshield Coster (and some of the proceeds given to the barkeep for his injuries) so that they're not just lying around for the next people to visit the tavern to trip over.
Dec 8, 2015 6:44 pm
"How do we get into the hideout exactly? And how many bugbears?"
Dec 8, 2015 10:05 pm
"There's a secret entrance hidden deep in the woods nearby. There are usually somewhere around three or four bugbears at any given time," the thug responds to Hollow's continued questioning.

Wish is able to find a large sack that he could use to haul the extra equipment.

"It could be hours before this poor man awakens, he would have died were it not for you," Sister Garaele says to Kama, "You are a good man and we appreciate all you've done for our town already."
Dec 9, 2015 12:48 am
Kama nods in understanding. He leaves the barkeep in the temple's care and returns to the tavern.
Dec 9, 2015 2:41 am
When Kama arrives, Wish asks him "Wasn't Qelline's kid saying something about a secret in the woods? I'm beginning to think there might be something more to that story...the Redbrand told Hollow about a secret entrance to the Redbrand hideout in Tresendar Manor."
Dec 9, 2015 2:50 am
Kama nods. "Yes, it must be the same," he says. "Kids have a way of finding these things." He listens to the recap of the thug's confessions and tsks at the mention of bugbears and eye monsters. "This Asstaff has quite a crew. I hope this 'eye monster' isn't what I'm thinking it is; I'd care not to meet such floating tyrants."
Dec 10, 2015 4:58 pm
"Let's take this guy to Townmaster Harbin, drop off these items at Lionshield Coster, and then go back and talk to...Fish-something? What was the kid's name? Trout?"

Saying is as good as doing, so Wish will haul the Redbrand to his feet and push him ahead of him out of the door, dragging the sack of weapons behind him.
Dec 10, 2015 5:05 pm
Kama kneels down by the thug asks the thug as Wish pulls him up, "What kind of 'eye monster' is this? What does it look like?"

He would also like a map of the manor.

He trips and falls as Wish pushes him forward, his broken leg won't hold his weight, "It's just a little, sneaky beast with a big eyeball. It's disgusting... big claws too!" he says to Kama, but he refuses to provide a map.
Dec 10, 2015 8:35 pm
Well, that certainly does NOT fit the description I was told. Perhaps it's not what I'm thinking of.

"How many of you are left?" Kama asks, continuing the interrogation. He holds the thug up by the arm as they head towards the Townmaster, pushing up towards the shoulder to keep the man off-balance on the non-injured leg.
Dec 10, 2015 8:42 pm
"I'm not sure how many members we have, I never could count past 10... but there's a lot of us!" he is growing irritated at all the questions.
Dec 10, 2015 9:20 pm
Wish grins as they enter the Townmaster's Hall again. "Hello, Townmaster! Harbin! Hello!" When the man makes his appearance, Wish will continue at a lower volume. "Hello, Harbin! Sorry, we don't have orcs for you yet - we'll be getting on that soon with the horses you've provided - but we do have the next best thing: one of the Redbrands! Yes, he won't be terrorizing Phandalin again any time soon. So, uh...where do you want him? Do you have some sort of a lock-up here?"
Last edited December 10, 2015 9:21 pm
Dec 11, 2015 4:05 pm
Harbin looks up from what he's doing and cringes at the sight of the bloody man entering the building, he then points to a door off to your right, "Bring him in, there's a couple of cells down in the basement, leave him in there and I'll take care of it later when I have time!"
Dec 11, 2015 7:13 pm
"You might need the Sister to splint his leg," advises Kama, guiding the Redbrand down the stairs with care to not further injure what he considers a prisoner of war. "C'mon, easy on the steps," he says to the thug. Kama's progress is slow as he ensures that the man is able to plant his non-injured leg securely.
Dec 11, 2015 9:20 pm
Eager to waste little time before getting back at these Redbrand guys in Tresendar Manor, Wish uses the time that Kama is leading the thug into the basement cell to hustle the sack of weapons further down the street to Lionshield Coster. If Linene is present, he will chat to her amiably and explain where the weapons came from. Then (or otherwise), he will attempt to sell the weapons to the Coster and return to the Townmaster's Hall with the proceeds.
Dec 11, 2015 9:28 pm
"I'll send someone for her in a little while," Harbin says, waving his hand in dismissal of the whole concern. Kama is able to easily get the man downstairs and lock him in his cell.

Wish is able to get half the PHB price from his goods.
Dec 11, 2015 10:41 pm
Kama helps the man sit, given his injury, and ensures that the Redbrand has the essentials. "One last thing," he says to the thug. "I'll be taking that cloak of yours."
Dec 12, 2015 6:26 pm
"That's a good plan Kama. If we wear their cloaks, it might buy us a second if we are seen. We should collect them from the other bodies if they aren't to blood stained. If we come up short we can pretend to be your prisoners. Then it's off to see the Trout boy about that tunnel."
Dec 14, 2015 7:50 am
Wish stops by Sister Garaele's Shrine on the way back from the Coster, and asks her to hold some money (13 GP, 5 SP, 5 CP) to give to the barkeep once he regains consciousness, to help defray the costs of repairs to the Sleeping Dragon. It could do with a new door and a lick of paint.

He rejoins the others and reports what he's done, and wonders if they're ready to go to the Manor or the farm.
Dec 14, 2015 1:58 pm
You are able to find enough cloaks in good shape to fit each of you.

Time to visit Carp or do you want to go straight to the manor?
Dec 14, 2015 3:43 pm
Kama agrees with Hollow's plan of visiting Carp at the Alderleaf farm for directions to the secret tunnel. He will not wear the cloak until it's time to enter.
Dec 14, 2015 4:14 pm
Wish takes his new cloak and rolls it up in his pack, then proceeds with the others back to the Alderleaf farm to "see the fish kid again."
Dec 14, 2015 4:15 pm
The party makes their way to Qelline's house where she is glad to allow such upstanding citizens as yourselves to have Carp show you where he found the secret tunnel in the woods. He leads you to a well-hidden tunnel in the woods, probably used to smuggle goods and people into the hideout. There are no guards outside of the tunnel and you can hear no sound from within.

Carp is excited at the prospect of adventure and is speaking quickly to Kama, "Can I go in with you boss? I will be quiet, I promise, you won't even know I'm there!"

If you decide to enter I will need a marching order
Dec 14, 2015 4:38 pm
Wish will lead the way, lighting a torch if there's no light.
Dec 14, 2015 4:39 pm
"I need someone back at the farm to watch for strangers," replies Kama to Carp. "While we're inside, there's no one to protect the town. If you see more Redbrands or orcs coming, you have to get your mom and go to the Townmaster."
Dec 14, 2015 4:39 pm
I follow beside Wish.
Dec 14, 2015 7:13 pm
Carp looks disappointed, but obeys and heads back toward town. You enter the dark tunnel, which goes down about 100 feet before opening up to a large room.

A cold breeze fills this large natural cavern, carrying with it the faint scent of decaying flesh. A crevasse divides the cavern andis flanked by two rough stone columns that support the twenty-foot-high ceiling. Two arched wooden bridges span the chasm.

Wish creeps forward to the first pillar, looking for any signs that would give them a clue as to where to go but doesn't see any clear sign as to where they should go.

Kama listens intently, and he hears a slight scraping sound on the other side of the pillar that Wish is standing by.
Dec 16, 2015 3:56 pm

Wish nods at the half-orc and holds still. He uses the time as Kama approaches to look around the cavern. What is that smell?

Whatever it is, Kama thinks there's something behind the pillar. As Kama draws near, Wish points to Kama, then one direction around the pillar, then himself and the other direction around the pillar. So when Kama arrives, Wish will shift around the pillar on one side, hoping against hope to surprise whatever it is, despite the noise they've been making.

Wish and Kama stand by the pillar, ready to step around and surprise whatever in on the other side. They don't hear any other noises from behind the pillar.

ROUND 1: SURPRISE ROUND FOR PLAYERS

Kama lunges around the corner and sees a disgusting creature. It is crouched down, but would stand to his chest if it extended to its full height. Its most notable feature is the single large eye that dominates its face. Its grayish-green skin is scaly and it has claws at the end of its hands. It stares at Kama in shock, totally caught off guard by his sudden rush.

After taking averages of your rolls the initiatives were a tie, so players will get the first turn

If it's one thing Kama learned in this time in Phandalin, it's that his appearance and that of his companions do not imply intent. Indeed, the townsfolk were very accepting of them; perhaps it is time Kama followed suit.

"Who are you?" hisses Kama, keeping his voice down. He doesn't want to cause undue noise, but his tone is meant to indicate that he will not hesitate to smash this being against the stone if it threatens his friends.

While Kama is willing to give each creature a chance, they are in the Redbrand hideout. He remains wary.

The creature makes an odd hissing sound, almost like a rasping chuckle and you can hear a voice in your head. "I am Grock, why are you in my home?" the voice is followed by the sounds of mad, echoing laughter in your head. It's a very disturbing sensation.

Kama knows pretty much nothing about nothics. He'd never even heard about them before this.
Dec 18, 2015 4:49 pm
Kama recoils a bit. He is used to voices in his head thanks to his experiences with Hollow, but the laugh is something new.

"Grock," he says, repeating the name to give him time to momentarily collect himself. "This is your home? So you are with the Redbrands?" Kama tightens his grip on his maul, but maintains his position. He tries to keep the creature's attention to allow Wish and the others the opportunity to surround it.

*Eye monster...!* Wish thinks at Hollow, hoping she can receive his messages. *...but not attacking? Come up, but be wary...*
Dec 19, 2015 1:22 am
"We knew about his from our 'friend' at the bar. This creature works with the Redbrands." Hollow moves forward until she can see the aberrant creature. When she lays eyes on it a cold fear grips her. This isn't anything like the creature in the pit back in Thay, but it's nature is undeniable. Attempting to be silent she intones the her Eldritch Blast as quietly as possible. "Cthul'ta'fan."

Hollow's attack hits the Nothic in the side, knocking it off balance. Your minds are all filled with an incoherent scream, which causes a massive headache.

Nothic: Wounded (14 damage)

Xora, Wish, and Kama can all take an action before the Nothic responds.

Dec 23, 2015 5:26 am
Wish attempts to skewer the eye monster, or at least perforate it a little...anything to stop the screaming!

(Note: the rolled damage was wrong - my mistake; I tried to chain dice rolls for damage as in 1d8+1d6+3; the site interpreted that as 1d8+1 + 1d6+3. So subtract one point from that damage total if it's a hit....so it's 15 points of damage, not 16)

Wish's attack catches the nothic in the back causing yet another pained scream. The creature knows it's overmatched and darts away, slipping right by Wish and crawling into the chasm.

Nothic took disengage action to run away from you. You managed to do 36 damage to it. It looked pretty beat up before it left
Dec 23, 2015 2:19 pm
Now that the nothic is out of sight you can see several hallways. There is one to the left of the entrance, which Hollow is standing at the end of, another lies across the first bridge, another can be seen to the left just beyond the second bridge spanning the chasm. There is also what appears to be the opening to another room straight ahead on the other side of the bridge.

Kama peers into the chasm to see if there's a convenient way down. He is loathe to leave the creature alive, lest it slip away and warn Glasstaff. He listens intently, both to determine the nothic's location, and to check if their battle has attracted any other attention.

Hollow stares daggers at the place the creature disappeared to. She seethes with a desire to go after it and end it's existence, but knows there are more pressing matters. She turns her attention to the other ways out of this room and tries to match them up to what little she has seen of the ruined domicile above, assuming this to be some kind of basement or root cellar. She tries to determine the most likely way up to the Redbrand hideout.

::I'm not sure what the best skill would be for this, if a skill roll is needed. In the old days I would have said Dungeoneering, but that isn't an option. There's another room up ahead. Let's scout that before we go skipping down dark hallways.

Kama points to the indicated room for the benefit of the others, and starts to move to the far bridge.
Dec 24, 2015 7:17 pm
Kama, you are able to see that the walls of the chasm are very rough and would be easy to climb up and down. You aren't able to hear or see the nothic from here though.

Hollow, you are able to determine that you are in the basement of the manor, which is where the thug you had captured indicated the hideout was. You do know that the upper floors are, to all appearances, abandoned completely and all the activity occurs down here.

Following the monster with the torch to the edge Wish looks down, trying to see where it went and whether he can see bottom/a cave opening/whatever.

Rolls

Perception (if needed) - (1d20+3)

Dec 24, 2015 8:09 pm
Wish peers down into the chasm to look for the nothic. The bottom is about 20 feet down and it is 5 to 10 feet wide, stretching from one end of the chamber to the other. He sees the nothic as it slips into a little cubby at the bottom to attempt to hide from the party. There is some object in the cubby with the nothic but you can't see what it is.
Dec 28, 2015 9:21 am
Wish nods to Xora. "If that thing comes out while I'm climbing, shoot it! I won't be able to fight back while I'm climbing..."

Wish sheathes his rapier, takes the coiled rope from the side of his pack, and ties one end around his waist. Then he hands the other end to Kama, takes a deep breath, and walks over to the edge. He drops the torch so that it falls near enough to the cubbyhole to illuminate it (using control flames to ensure it doesn't go out). Then he begins to climb down...

Dec 28, 2015 5:17 pm
Peering around, Wish attempts to make sure that it's just him and the eye monster - no traps or other threats - as he redraws his rapier. Can he see what's in the cubby with it?

ROUND 2

Kama and Wish corner the beast and both swing at it. It deftly dodges both overly eager attacks.

Forced into the corner and protecting its treasure the nothic lunges toward Kama, raking at his face and chest. Kama manages to bat the first claw away with the handle of his maul, but the second claw catches him on the chest, digging deep to scrape his ribcage (9 Damage).

With Kama holding onto the nothic, Wish finds it easy to slip his blade through its heart. You hear one last scream in your mind and it slumps down to the ground, quite dead.

Combat over! 110 xp for all, if that puts you over the level feel free to level up.
Dec 31, 2015 4:33 pm
Kama winces, not only at the psychic scream, but also in anticipation of a blade tip jabbing into his body. After a few tense moments, Kama realizes that Wish has not run him through and visibly relaxes.

"Nice control, Wish," says Kama, appreciatively. He pushes the body off of himself and holds a hand gingerly to his chest, testing the extent of his wounds.

Does leveling up restore all hit points, like they do in all them video games? :)
Dec 31, 2015 4:41 pm
Leveling will restore the hit points that you gain from this level. If you gain 10 hp this level, increase your max as well as you current hp by that amount
Dec 31, 2015 5:10 pm
As Kama stands in the crevasse, he stares down at the body of the nothic. He had never before encountered such an aberration; it smacked in the face of everything that was good and natural in the world. Goblins and bugbears were understandable, but this... thing?

Perhaps it is all in his mind, but Kama believes he can feel the evil still emanating from the lifeless body. He imagines what would have happened to Carp had the young halfling wandered into the tunnel and met this foul creature. The thought brings up memories of his own childhood, happy on a farm similar to the Alderleaf's. The smell of freshly-turned and fertile earth, the glow of bountiful crops, and the sounds of laughter from mirthful harvests; all those would be lost should fell beings like the nothic be allowed to spoil the world.

The half-orc realizes that such affronts to nature were threats to the land as well as to the good, honest folk that worked it. Kama vows that he will do everything in his power to smite down the aberrant monstrosities that plague the world so that innocent people like the Alderleafs can thrive.

Kama advances to become a Paladin.

Wish opens the chest to find: 160 sp, 120 gp, five malachite gems, two potions of healing, and a scroll of augury.

Also contained within is a beautiful longsword in a silver-chased scabbard with the word "Talon" engraved on it. The hilt is worked in the shape of a bird of prey with out spread wings.
Jan 2, 2016 5:38 am
Hollow gasps when she sees the chest removed from the nothic's cubby. She stares at it then moves to the rope the men used to climb down. "Please, pass that box up here."

When she she receives it she peers inside and turns over ans around somewhat frantically.
Jan 2, 2016 7:43 am
Wish holds the sword up, entranced by the gleam of silver in the flickering torchlight.

But the weight is all wrong; the weapon is made for crushing and hacking - not Wish's style at all. He slides it back in the scabbard and hands it to Kama: "Would this suit you, or maybe Xora? Too heavy for me."

He then ties the rope to the chest so that Xora and Hollow can haul it up.
Jan 2, 2016 5:35 pm
Hollow carefully searches the box. After several minutes of searching, she is shocked to find a small notch in the bottom of the chest. Sticking her finger in she finds a latch, which she quickly releases and reveals a false bottom to the chest. She takes a deep breath and opens it up to reveal a thick, black book bound in what appears to be leather.
Jan 3, 2016 6:20 am

Jan 3, 2016 4:30 pm
Hollow turns the black book over in her hands. With a slightly trembling hand she opens the clasp and flips through the pages. She whispers to herself, "How can this be here?"

Stowing the book in her pack she absently replies to Kama's statement by saying, "Yes, Glasstaff must be dealt with."
Jan 5, 2016 7:50 am
Once he finally struggles his way to the top of the rope - it was so much easier on the way down! - Wish looks around and can barely see anything, as the only light is cast by the flickering light of the torch at the bottom of the ravine. He sets about lighting another torch, and as he does so, remarks: "Well, there's two passages on this side, or we could cross one of the bridges to see what's on the other side...once I get another torch lit, of course. Does anyone have a preference, or a hunch as to which way to go first?"
Jan 5, 2016 2:09 pm
I take the blade with a shrug and attach it to my pack. "Continue moving now or rest first, in case there are any additional 'surprises' later?" I continue to keep a vigilant eye out to examine our surroundings for any indication that we've been discovered and/or are being ambushed. One can never be too paranoid.

You all cross the bridge at the north end of the cavern and enter the room. This area is the north end of a large natural cavern, but it has been finished with dressed stone block walls and a flagstone floor. Several barrels are stored against the walls here, along with a number of empty crates, straw for packing, hammers, pry bars, and nails. This room appears to be otherwise empty.

Jan 7, 2016 4:24 pm
Wish comes awake at the sound, stretches and says with a yawn: "As far as we know, he's a person like any of us. Probably he bleeds like any of us." But he nods as the sense of Kama's words sink in and he comes more fully awake. "Yes, let's bring him to justice, and put a stop to the Red Band menace." He looks at where Kama pointed out the secret doors and nods again, approvingly. "How about this door on the left?"

How far down do the stairs lead? Is it a steep staircase to a whole new level, or a short flight practically on the same?
Jan 11, 2016 1:58 am
Wish gestures to the others from the bottom of the stairs, beckoning for them to join him and sending flickering shadows dancing from his torch.

Hollow doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary in the passage. It's only about 10 feet long with a stairway leads down to another floor.

Xora sees some tracks in here, but nothing that stands out as obviously wizardly.

Just let me know when you want to open the door
Jan 11, 2016 3:41 pm
Kama takes position behind Wish. With one hand grasping his maul, he places his other hand on the genasi's shoulder and gives a nod. He looks back at Hollow and Xora to confirm they are also ready.

I hope this leads to a kitchen.

The door opens smoothly and silently to reveal a bedchamber about 20 feet across and 15 feet wide. The walls of this bedchamber are covered with drapes of scarlet cloth. The furnishings include a small writing desk with matching chair, a comfortable-looking bed, and a wooden chest at the foot of the bed.

Sitting at the desk, about 10 feet from Wish, is a short, dark-bearded human male in robes, studying a tome. He wears a princely mantle of ermine. A beautiful glass staff leans against his chair, within easy reach.

Wish, coming through the door first, rushes over and kicks the glass staff aside as he puts his rapier up against the man's throat. "Pardon me! Might you be known as Glasstaff?"

Edit: Confident that they've got the drop on the man, Wish also relaxes his concentration on the torch, so that it resumes its normal light.

In response to Hollow's telepathic suggestion, Wish then adds: "Answer quietly, please."

Kama follows the genasi into the room. Given that the man is only 10-feet away, he thinks it is tactically better to rush the potential wizard before he can get a spell off. He pays close attention to the man's hands and growls, "Don't even think about moving those paws of yours."

As emphasis, Kama plants the head of his maul upon the desk, letting its heavy weight imply his meaning. "Just nod your head yes or no."
Jan 11, 2016 7:03 pm
Wish easily knocks the staff out of the way and feels the man stiffen as the rapier comes to rest on his neck, he responds calmly with a nod. He is surrounded and appears totally resigned to the situation.
Jan 11, 2016 7:20 pm
"That's good." Wish nods. He thinks to Hollow: *Would you get that staff, please? I don't think he could get it, but you hear stories...*

(OoC: is there another door in the room visible? Wish is a little worried about getting interrupted while they are discussing things with Mr. Reader here...)

"So! You are known as Glasstaff?"
Jan 11, 2016 7:20 pm
Kama brings out a strip of cloth to gag the man. No sense letting him cry out for help or cast a spell. He then takes off his chain vest and slips it over the man's head and drapes it over his shoulders, before finally tying the man's hands at the wrists, behind his back.

The half-orc begins a pat-down, removing any weapons, spell components, or arcane foci from the man. His work is methodical and practiced, done hundreds of times during his military training.
Jan 11, 2016 7:29 pm
Hollow moves for the staff and snatches it up. She keeps one hand free to cast her own spells and moves to the door opposite the secret entrance to listen for any Redbands coming to check on their boss.

The wizard nods once again to Wish's inquiry. There is a door on the other side of the room.

Glasstaff sits still while Kama does his search. Kama discovers a component pouch on his person but little else.

Hollow doesn't hear anything on the other side of the door.
Jan 11, 2016 8:30 pm
You folks search the room. I'll keep an eye on Asstaff here.

Kama stands guard over the wizard, making sure there isn't even the slightest hint of spellcasting.
Jan 11, 2016 8:57 pm
Hollow shoves Glasstaff away from his desk in order to rifle through his papers looking for the correspondences that the group was asked to find. She has no intention of passing them off unread but does not say anything allowed about it.

To Glasstaff telepathically, "There is a price on your head you know. Several people would have us kill you before you have a chance to face justice. Do you have an opinion on the matter?"

Naatkinson sent a note to foolsmask
Wish is fairly sure the chest is neither locked nor trapped.
Jan 11, 2016 9:26 pm
Wish opens the chest and inspects the contents.

[Note to Wish]
Naatkinson sent a note to spaceseeker19
Jan 11, 2016 10:02 pm
"Well, here is an interesting discovery. Do any of you remember the name Albreck? He was is a friend of Gundren's. A wizard, and he went missing a few weeks ago. This guy has a letter addressed to Albreck from, judging by the mark, the Black Spider. What do we make of that?"

Contemplating for a few moments Hollow then turns to Glasstaff, arching an eyebrow she says to him telepathically, "Well Albreck? Don't you have any opinion at all on whether we should kill you now or drag your sorry ass back to town to face their justice?"
Jan 11, 2016 10:21 pm
Albrek's head falls for a moment as Hollow reveals his secret but he does not respond to her telepathic message. Instead he raises his head and stares into her eyes defiantly.
Jan 11, 2016 10:56 pm
Kama shakes his head slightly, amazed at the turn of events, but not altogether surprised. "Let's take him back to town. We will turn him over to the authorities and they will deal with him as they see fit." He grabs Albreck's arm near the shoulder and pulls him up.

"Back the way we came?"
Jan 12, 2016 12:38 am
"Yes, that way is likely unguarded still. I am curious still about the person who wanted this letter unread by us, but didn't care if Glasstaff was dead. We can sneak back in and mop up the thugs once this guy is taken care of. They likely won't be an issue once they realize their boss is gone."
Jan 12, 2016 2:34 am
Kama is careful not to give away too much identifying information. "We have heard the name Black Spider before," he says. "With that letter, we have the incriminating evidence that should be turned over to the proper authorities. I'm sure it will lead to further questioning, as well, especially if Albreck here knows something that could help us. But let's have this nice friendly chat later, in safer quarters."
Jan 13, 2016 8:03 am
Wish stands up, distracted by some parchment in his hands. "This is interesting..." then his brain catches up with what his ears have heard. "You know, if you can't remember their names, you could just ask me! I mean..."

Wish gets a look at their faces. "What? OH! Ohhhh...yes, certain people back in a certain town would be pretty interested to hear about what a certain someone has been doing, especially when some people have a certain something that shows how that certain someone was involved..." He beams, pleased with himself.

Then he remembers what he's found. "Oh - hey, before we go, look at this! This chest has a pouch of gold & silver coins, a pouch of precious stones, and two scrolls. What's interesting is that these seem to be magic scrolls, and yet I can read them! That probably means that whoever wrote these was clever enough to put the magic into the paper, so that anybody could use them to cast a spell. I mean, if I can read it, probably anyone can! Let's see...this one seems to be called "Figbain's Coercing Others," and this one is "Fiona's Blast of Flame."

(OoC: a spellcaster looking at these scrolls can tell that the scrolls are Charm Person and Fireball, respectively.)

"Things like these are probably worth a lot of money!..." Wish gets a gleam in his eye.

"...but we could also use them, I suppose. Does anybody care to try Figbain's magic, or Fiona's?" He holds out the scrolls to the others, careful to keep them away from Glasstaff, in case he can somehow activate them despite being bound.

"Put those away for now. I am familiar with the Coercing spell already, the other one may prove useful in the future. They were likely written so that someone could identify them in a hurry. And yes Wish, I haven't forgotten their name. But now I think we have waited long enough. We should get our catch back to town before we are discovered." Hollow cradles the staff wondering what magic it holds, but knows she will have to wait to discover it's secrets.
Jan 13, 2016 5:27 pm
"Escort missions," mumbles Kama. "They're always fun." He nods to Wish and Xora, wanting for either of them to lead the way while he keeps a firm grip on Albreck's arm, pushing up on the shoulder to keep the man off-balance and moveable.
Jan 13, 2016 6:53 pm
Satisfied that there are no other surprises here, I grunt and lead the group out. "Back the way we came."
Jan 13, 2016 9:24 pm
Albrek doesn't fight as you lead him out of the cellar of the manor. You easily find your way back to the town proper and to the Townmaster's Hall. As you enter you see that Harbin and Sildar standing there talking about something. They turn as you enter and Sildar's jaw drops while Harbin's eyes pop.

"Iarno, is that really you? What's the meaning of this?" Sildar looks upset and confused at the way you're handling his friend.
Jan 13, 2016 11:00 pm
"This is Iarno Albrek, also known as Glasstaff, leader of the Redbrands." She presents the staff of glass assuming it will help identify him.
Jan 14, 2016 12:57 am
"We also have papers linking this man to the disappearance of Gund... am Rock... crusher?" Kama stumbles a bit over the dwarf's name. He shakes his head briefly, clearing the fog, before re-establishing his attention on keeping Albreck in custody.
Jan 14, 2016 2:05 pm
Sildar stares at the staff wordlessly for a moment and then looks back to Iarno. You can see the disappointment and betrayal in his eyes as he finally speaks, "Please, take him to the jail. Bind his hands and gag him so he can't cast spells."

After you return from the cells below you find Sildar sitting down at a desk, a glass of wine is already half-empty in front of him, "So... what's the plan now? Are the Redbrands done now?"

The party receives 400 xp for bringing Iarno back alive
Jan 14, 2016 2:29 pm
"No, the Redbrands are still out there. We found ourselves with an opportunity to capture their leader and we took it. If they haven't discovered his disappearance by now, they will soon. It may cause them to scatter, or somebody might try to take over. We will deal with them. If we can I'd like to have a word with Halli from the Miner's Exchange. She may have some information that could prove useful." Sparing a thought for her companions she sends to them, "Feel free to speak up if one of you has a different idea on how to proceed. I just can't shake the feeling this woman is more involved than she has said."
Jan 14, 2016 3:29 pm
"We'll probably want to head back to their lair," says Kama, referring to the Redbrands. "Convince the remainder to flee... or maybe... try to convert them to constables under supervision." Kama looks at Sildar to gauge his reaction to that idea, and adds, "Might help to have a few extra hands if and when the orcs decide to raid? We do still have pressing business with a dwarf to rescue."

Kama looks at Hollow for a moment. I don't doubt that she expressed more than a passing interest, but would we investigate now, or after clearing the manor?
Jan 14, 2016 5:09 pm
"She offered gold for this letter...unread by us. I think she's involved somehow. But it can wait I suppose."
Jan 14, 2016 5:19 pm
Kama nods to Hollow.

I agree with your suspicion. I just figure that she's probably not going anywhere. I also don't think she knows what the letter says specifically, as she only asked us to turn over anything we've found. Sounds like she's just very interested in whatever Albreck had going on, maybe to use as blackmail, maybe to figure out if anyone was above him and giving him orders, or maybe just for ideas to run her own competing gang.

Kama looks to the side, briefly, I think I have something stuck in my teeth, and spends some time working something in his mouth.
Jan 14, 2016 5:23 pm
"I don't like leaving the Redbrands under the manor....uh...unsupervised. We ran into just a few of them earlier at the tavern, and saw what damage they could do, and that was without a leader. Who knows what mischief they're getting up to up there?"

Wish exchanges a look with the others, and thinks at Hollow, hoping she's receiving as well as broadcasting: :::I think it would be interesting to check in with her and watch her closely, to see what her reaction will be. Does she have knowledge of this Black Spider villain?:::

Wish remembers something: "Oh! And the crook we brought in before..." He looks to Kama for an aside "...we put them in separate cells, right?" Then back to Sildar and Harbin: "...that guy mentioned that there were bugbears under the manor, too, which is a good case for going back and clearing them out. They might end up leading the humans, if they don't eat them first."
Jan 15, 2016 10:28 pm
Sildar nods, "Yes, I can see your point... It would be best if the remaining thugs and bugbears below were dealt with. Under the direction of vicious bugbears I could see the Redbrands being a massive problem."

Harbin is shaking in fear. Evil goblinoids leading an army from the manor? Terrifying. "You've started us on this path, fools. You must go back down this instant and kill them all before they come for us!"

"Calm down, Harbin, we won't let anything happen to the town," Sildar says and then turns to you, "I wish we could lend a hand down there, but we have to keep any fighting hands up here in case the slip out to attack while you're gone, and that's not even mentioning the orcs nearby who could cause us trouble. I'm afraid this task falls to you, my friends. We are ever in your debt it appears."
Jan 16, 2016 12:03 am
Kama grunts. "Going back is fine and good," he says. "But let's have a chat with Albreck and his henchman in the cells. It'd be nice to know how many bugbears and Redbrands remain in the manor, as well as any other surprises that might be in store."
Jan 16, 2016 3:55 am
"That is a good idea Kama, if we can get them to talk. The first one we brought in was vague about their numbers. Albreck was not talkative, but I think we can spare a few minutes to try again. They won't get assistance from the orc that fast...if they even are, or know they are, allies."

To Wish, telepathically, "Precisely what I want to find out. The Redbrands left her alone, why? She knew something about Albreck being Glasstaff and wanted to keep it secret, why? My darkest suspicion is that Black Spider has woven a web around Phandalin and placed many of his own people in key positions. Halia may be a jealous rival looking to move up because of the fall of the Redbrands, but worried that we might find something to link her to the Spider before she is ready to play her hand."
Jan 18, 2016 4:39 pm
Before going back to the cells, Wish looks at his companions in admiration. Gundren really knows his business, to have picked such wise and capable people to assist him. It makes Wish feel motivated to do better, to jutify his inclusion on this great team. "Yes, I think Kama has the way of it. Sildar, do you wish to observe as we talk to Gla...um...Iarno, and perhaps learn more about why he was doing what he's been doing, while we figure out how many villains we have to fight?"

After making the invitation, Wish will head back to the cells.
Jan 18, 2016 4:49 pm
Sildar nods and heads down to the cells with Wish. When you get there you find Iarno exactly where you left him. He looks at you, raises and eyebrow and turns around to face away from you.
Jan 19, 2016 8:12 am
Wish is momentarily surprised to see the gag still in the wizard's mouth. *But of course, we wouldn't want to leave him able to speak his magic...*

So he thinks to Hollow, hoping that she's "receiving:"
:::Hollow, can you communicate with Iarno here while we ask questions? I'd feel safer than letting him speak, but if we have to, then we will...:::
Jan 19, 2016 5:42 pm
Back at Wish, "Of course, I'd be happy to relay whatever he reveals."

Stepping forward, Hollow smiles at the former gang leader then intones a spell (Charm Person) "Utzilah tasarak ith maldifidii idish!" :::DC 14 Will save for Charm Person. I'll follow that up with a Friend cantrip, same DC, if it looks like the first spell worked.:::

It'll probably go a long way towards leniency in your judgment if you cooperate. After all, you were just following orders, right?" Wish grins sweetly at Iarno. "It's the ringleaders who are to blame, leading good people down the wrong path and into evil deeds."

Wish clears his throat. "So, um, we are going to clean up this town, so that it's safe. Safe for townies, safe for miners, safe even for gang members. Getting rid of the leader here" - another smiling nod to Iarno - "goes a long way in that direction. But we're going to have to clear out the rest of the hideout under the manor. It's more likely that we will be able to capture the other Redbrands if you can tell us how many there are, and where we can expect to find them. See, I don't want to kill the Redbrands" - inside, the genasi desperately wishes this were true - "I just want to bring them in so they can't hurt themselves or others anymore. But if I don't know where they are and they surprise me, well..." Wish drags his finger across his throat while making a ragged tearing noise. "What do you say, Kama?"

Wish is disturbed at how much he enjoyed that; he steps outside before he succumbs to the impulse to draw his sword on the captive wizard. He takes some deep breaths, walking back and forth. *What is the matter with me?? Maybe I should give up on burglary and look up Sister Garaele, see if she has an opening at the Shrine...*

When the others emerge, he's got himself cool again (though likely Hollow can sense his internal turmoil, even if she can't sense the bloodlust behind it). "So? That went well! Good work, Kama!" Wish looks over the map and whistles. "Really good work! I guess it's often a good idea to take prisoners when we can..." The genasi sighs deeply, then shakes his head.

Wish looks at Hollow. "So...shall we drop in on Halia at the Miner's Exchange with some good news?"

"Halia's not going anywhere, at least right away," says Kama. "I think we need to find those 'prisoners' they mentioned and see about releasing them from the skeletons." The half-orc hefts his maul at the thought of facing the undead. "Let's not forget about the bugbears, too."
Jan 20, 2016 7:34 am
"I agree, assuming he was telling the truth about having captives. That other issue can wait. I wonder who they could be that no one has noticed they are missing."
Jan 20, 2016 3:52 pm
Kama glances down, clearly in thought. "Yes, we would have heard talk," he says. "Or maybe we weren't listening. We were a bit preoccupied with Gundren's disappearance."

The half-orc half smiles. "My memory's not much. I could have forgotten, too. Back to the tunnel, then?"
Jan 20, 2016 3:59 pm
"We're assuming they haven't killed the prisoners yet." I stretch my neck a bit and amble back towards the tunnels.
Jan 20, 2016 4:51 pm
Following the others Hollow looks toward the inn while they are on the road. She silently wonders how her sister and the others are, but the matter at hand is more pressing so she continues without stopping. "Hopefully there aren't any ambitious thinkers in the group. We got out unseen, so hopefully the Redbrands will just assume their boss went out for a while and will return."
Jan 20, 2016 5:00 pm
"If there's a chance they're alive, we ought to try," says Kama, acknowledging Xora's thoughts that mirror his own. "I still want to try and convince any surviving Redbrands to work for the town, instead of against it. I'm sure Sildar could use the help. The bugbears, if they have knowledge of the Black Spider, may prove useful if they can be captured alive, but if Klarg was any indication of their temperament, it may not be possible. And they're highly dangerous.

"The skeletons are unnatural, and should be destroyed. Their souls ought to be put to rest at the very least. Maybe we should stop by the temple for something?"
Jan 21, 2016 2:53 am
"We can check with the Sister once we return; we're halfway to the manor already. I think Xora's right - if they have prisoners, and they know we're coming for them, we need to hurry to rescue them!"

Jan 21, 2016 11:39 pm
Wish feels his professional itch to try his mettle against this lock...

...but then he recalls that they're here to rescue people, so he looks wistfully at the lock and turns away, heading down to the door to the crypts. Once there, he again inspects the door, listens for noise, and otherwise perceives what may come...

Wish grins, relieved. "I can't hear anything creepy at all! Must be OK!"

He opens the door and enters, still cautious.
Jan 22, 2016 12:09 am
"Well get a move on, then. No point dawdling." I urge him to continue forward. If he doesn't move I will walk past him and scout ahead.

Ooc: unless the door is locked. Then I'll wait behind Wish.

Kama will follow, maul at the ready. He says nothing as he mentally prepares himself for what is reportedly coming.
Jan 22, 2016 6:12 pm
As the party enters the room they can see three large stone sarcophagi standing within a dusty crypt, and propped up against each sarcophagus is a human skeleton clad in bits of rusty mail. False columns along the walls are carved in the image of spreading oak trees. The double doors in the southeast corner are sheathed in tarnished copper plate.

Wish steps up to the skeleton at the foot of the sarcophagus on the opposite wall (between the two sets of doors) and attempts to cleave it in twain with his rapier, then use his cunning action to disengage with it back towards Kama.

Xora's arrow hits the skeleton in the head but is deflected by the hard bone. The skeleton's slams a rusty blade into Kama's stomach, but it is broken to pieces upon impact with the finely made armor. The party makes quick work of the remaining skeleton.

The thug snarls at you and raises his sword to attack but he doesn't get far as Xora's arrow catches him in the throat. He falls to the floor and bleeds to death. Now that the threats are gone you have a chance to look around. This long room is partitioned into three areas, with iron bars walling off the north and south. Filthy straw lines the floors of those cells, the hinged doors of which are secured by chains and padlocks. A pair of disheveled human women are held in the cell to the south, while a human boy is confined to the north. All are dressed in plain gray tunics and have iron collars fitted around their necks. A heap of discarded clothing is piled carelessly against the far wall. The prisoners, especially the boy, are cowering in the corner of their cells.

Jan 27, 2016 6:11 pm
Kama takes the key and rises. He approaches the north door and tries to fit the key in the lock, testing whether it fits and will open the cell doors.

"My name is Kama," he says as he works, hoping to put the captives more at ease. "We're taking down the Redbrands and have already arrested their leader. Let's get you out of here and back to town."

Rolls

Which door? 1 for north, 2 for south - (1d2)

(1) = 1

Jan 27, 2016 6:23 pm
Kama opens the door and the boy begins sobbing, "Thank you mister, thank you..." and he follows you as you open the next cage and then launches himself into his mother's arms. It takes a few minutes for the situation to calm down and the mother to turn to you all, "I'm Mirna Dendrar and these are my children, Nars and Nilsa. I don't know how to ever repay you for thanking us. They killed my husband for defying them and then came to take us in the night. I thought we would be killed for sure."
Jan 27, 2016 6:46 pm
"Let's get them out," suggests Kama to the rest of the group. "Escort them back through the storage room and the cavern, to the tunnel, just in case there are any Redbrands along the way."

To Mirna, Kama describes their location. "Once you exit the tunnel, you'll be in some woods about 200 feet east of the Alderleaf farm. Halfing family, you might know them. Seek shelter there, or at the Townmaster's."
Jan 27, 2016 7:57 pm
You are easily able to get the Dendrar family out of the hideout. As she gets ready to head back Mirna turns and gives on more piece of information, "I know it's not much, but my family used to be the owners of an alchemy shop in Thundertree before it was overrun by undead. Underneath the storage shelves you will find a case that contains an emerald necklace. I've never been brave enough to retrieve it, but if you go to the southeastern part of town and find it you may keep it."

Kama consults the map while standing in the cavern. "Shall we clear the cellar and barracks next? It's the only other area on that side of the ruins."
Jan 27, 2016 9:36 pm
Wish cleans his sword, meditatively reflecting on the fact that he is on the run for a murder charge...but he consoles himself that he was set up to take the fall by a gang of assassins and murderers much like these Redbrands.

Then, when Kama opens the cell doors, he's all smiles, trying to comfort the prisoners. He can't stand when people are oppressed. "Are you hurt? Can you walk?"
OOC:
Geez, that was out of order! I guess I loaded the most recent messages, and it took me to the first one I hadn't read, and I didn't realize that there was a full half page of posts on the next page! So: I've revised Wish's comments to make sense in the actual context.
Wish nods in agreement with Kama's suggestion, and adds: "After, I'd also like to go back and see if the Redbrands kept anything of value in those coffin things..."

On the other side of the pool you can see a door that leads to what you know is the barracks area.

Kama rests his maul on his shoulder, trying to be as non-threatening as possible.
Feb 4, 2016 1:58 pm
The door swings open easily to reveal the barracks. It appears to be a storeroom pressed into service as living quarters. Two double bunks stand against the wall near the door, while barrels and crates fill the southern half of the chamber. You see three Redbrands standing in the room: Two of them sit on the beds while the other is leaning against a barrel. They appear to have been deep in coversation and when they see you they begin scrambling for their weapons.

Kama lowers his maul, standing over the prone body of the unconscious man. "There's a new law in town," he says. "And Glassstaff's been taken down. I think you all want to be on the winning side, don't you?"

"Because we are the adventurers you jerks tried to kill, moron. Now get you ass to the jail where we can keep an eye on you."
Feb 9, 2016 4:36 pm
Wish looks appreciatively at his companions for replying so well. Their example helps him to bite down and not say his reply of "Glasstaff doesn't like failure" while stabbing them. He suppresses the vivid image in his mind and wipes off his rapier blade instead. Once that's done, he sheathes his sword and takes the weapons from the defeated thugs.
OOC:
I imagine we'll bind the hands of these bozos and march them back to the Townmaster's Hall to join the others. OOC:
I don't want to delay things to long, but since this is fairly routine and I don;t think we will be questioning anyone at this time, Hollow really wants to take the time to check on her sister.

Kama turns over the prisoners to Sildar for processing and informs him (and the Townmaster, if present) that they are returning to the manor once more to ensure it is cleared out. He then waits outside for Hollow.
Feb 10, 2016 4:53 pm
Hollow is able to find her sister without trouble. Seipora seems more bored than worried, but is happy that Hollow stopped by to see her. Sildar and Harbin take in the prisoners, while Harbin mutters to himself, "We're gonna need a bigger jail."
Feb 10, 2016 5:10 pm
Before he leaves to wait outside, Kama asks if the option is open for these thugs to make amends, perhaps as constables under Sildar's command.
Feb 10, 2016 5:15 pm
Sildar looks the men over, "I think that once they've done a little bit of time they could perhaps be put on a probationary period," he says, and as the men begin to look hopeful he faces Kama and with a sly wink finishes, "So long as Hollow has a way to put a spell on them that will kill them if they try to escape."

The men's eyes widen and they begin to chatter all at once about how they'd never betray his trust.

"That was done when we first met," says Kama. "Her infernal sight gave them the Evil Eye, which none of them warded."
Feb 10, 2016 5:28 pm
"Ahh yes, I had forgotten about that little trick of hers. A most useful ability!" Sildar replies with a grin as the men cringe and look around in fear, trying to find out where the witch is.
Feb 10, 2016 10:22 pm
"We shouldn't be much longer, when I return you will be able to get out and site see, not that this small town has much to see." Hollow says to Seipora, trying to placate her for a while longer. Then she heads back to the jail and the others.

"Are we done here? We still have some bugbears to deal with. They may be a dumb, but even they will notice that we have cleaned out their cohorts before to long." Hollow says to Sildar and Kama when she sees them. Out of the corner of her eye she sees the Redbrands flinch at her arrival. She turns and sneers at them.
Feb 10, 2016 11:00 pm
Kama nods in agreement. "Afterwards, I'll need a nice long nap," he says, matter-of-factly.
Feb 16, 2016 1:46 pm
You make it back to the Redbrand Hideout fairly quickly, and it still seems that there had not been an alarm raised.

You have currently explored everything on the right side, with the exception of the Armory.
OOC:
Did you guys ever do anything with that sword you found?
Feb 16, 2016 3:39 pm
Kama points down the nearest hallway. Idly he thinks they should have asked which room had the bugbears, but there's no sense in going back now.
OOC:
Xora still has the sword.
Feb 16, 2016 3:46 pm
"We don't want to get caught between the enemy. There are two rooms, the common room and the barracks. We were told the bugbears have taken the barracks as their own, but we they could just as easily be eating in the common room."

Hollow points further up the chamber and continues, "Perhaps we should approach from hallway to the north? Or just call them out and try to pin them in the hallway? Of course then they might notice they could get us from the north."

Kama nods. That sounds like an excellent plan.
Feb 17, 2016 2:25 am
Hollow moves toward the north to enter the common room.
Feb 18, 2016 2:21 pm
You head north and head down the second hallway on the left, coming to a dead end with a door on your left and right. The one on the right leads to Glasstaff's workshop and the one to the left leads to the common room, where you can hear a strange rattling sound and the occasional groan or cheer.

Feb 18, 2016 4:04 pm
Kama smirks. "Sounds like a dice game, if I ever heard one," he says. He starts to believe that the alarm still hasn't been raised; perhaps these Redbrands keep to themselves until someone (perhaps Albreck) comes around to collect them. "Same plan as before, lure them into the tunnel?"
Feb 19, 2016 8:00 pm
"I don't know if the bugbears are the redeemable type, nor do I suspect the townsfolk would give them a fair trial. I think we can try it, but be prepared for a fight."

OOC:
Can I say retroactively that at some point Wish has claimed one of the red cloaks for his disguise?
Wish looks at the rest of the group, and, when everyone else gives the nod that they're ready, he'll barge in the door to the south like he owns the place.

Wish dons his red cloak and opens the door like he owns the place. He realizes all of his bravado is for naught as there are four severely drunken men in here who just look up for a moment before returning the their game of dice, "You wan' join in? 2 copper buy-in!" one of them shouts.
Feb 20, 2016 1:14 am
Kama grins, shouldering his way forward. "2 copper! Think we can take 'em?" he says over-enthusiastically with a wink. He sounds like he's thinking of the game, but his expression to each of the party is cold.
Feb 22, 2016 5:16 am
Wish gives a plum chuckle, both in response to Kama's remark and to the fact that these guys aren't even curious about four such obviously inhuman interlopers. :::These guys are so dim, they deserve what's coming to them.::: He crosses over to join Kama in flanking one of the drunks, then also nods to Hollow. :::Milady, would you care to start the festivities, or shall we leave that to Xora? We'll follow your lead...:::

To stall for time and to keep them distracted, Wish will pull out 8 coppers and toss them down. "That's for each of us. Who goes first?"
OOC:
Are they at a table, or crouching on the floor, or what?

The thugs, sitting at a table playing dice barely respond besides to scoop up the coins, "I'll go first," the one on the opposite side of the table says. He picks up the dice and rolls (very well) and the rest of the men groan.
Feb 22, 2016 6:17 pm
Hollow moves into the room but keeps back, watching, not joining the gambling. She lets a few rolls happen, then unleashes her signature spell, eldritch blast, at the first gambler.

Rolls

Eldritch blast vs. Redbrand - (1d20+6)

(5) + 6 = 11

damage if that hit - (1d10+4)

(5) + 4 = 9

Feb 22, 2016 6:31 pm
OOC:
He'll be OK; you just singed him a little...!

The way I envision it, the first gambler is the one who rolled first, across the table from Kama and Wish, correct? Then let's say they're clockwise from him (R1), R2, R3 (with Wish on one side and Kama on the other), and then R4? That would mean that Wish and Kama are in between R2 & R3 or R3 and R4, depending on which side we took. Assuming that's OK, then...
Wish draws and attacks R3 to incapacitate, not kill (non-lethal damage).
OOC:
I am engaging with a target who will be in melee range of another target, but does that provide advantage for attacks when combat begins, or only once we've actually engaged them? If ADV doesn't apply, just use my first roll and ignore the Sneak Attack damage.

Rolls

Rapier attack on R3, base damage - (1d20+5, 1d8+3)

1d20+5 : (19) + 5 = 24

1d8+3 : (1) + 3 = 4

Rapier ADV attack roll on R3, sneak attack damage - (1d20+5, 2d6)

1d20+5 : (2) + 5 = 7

2d6 : (14) = 5

Feb 22, 2016 6:44 pm
"That's cheating!" roars Kama as the attacks commence. He brings his maul up and over his head, aiming for the back of Redbrand2 with the intent of smashing him into the table. The half-orc strikes to subdue, remembering his self-administered oath to capture as many as he can.

Rolls

Maul vs Redbrand2, Damage - (1d20+5, 2d6+3)

1d20+5 : (6) + 5 = 11

2d6+3 : (56) + 3 = 14

Feb 23, 2016 5:17 pm
The thugs that you hit all go down with little trouble, leaving the one sitting there confused as to what's going on. He looks at all of you in turn quickly. All the looking around makes him vomit and he falls to the floor, passed out.
OOC:
All 4 thugs are unconcious
Suddenly there is a large growl and a bang as the door crashes open to reveal the meanest Bugbear you've seen in a long time. Oddly enough he has a jeweled eyepatch fitted badly over one eye (which appears to be a functioning eye). You can see at least two other bugbears behind this one. The one in the back shouts, "Wait dere Droop, we be back!" They each are carrying a rather large morningstar.
OOC:
Party goes first!

Rolls

Party Init - (1d20+1, 1d20+2, 1d20+3, 1d20+3)

1d20+1 : (5) + 1 = 6

1d20+2 : (20) + 2 = 22

1d20+3 : (17) + 3 = 20

1d20+3 : (16) + 3 = 19

Enemy Init - (1d20+2)

(12) + 2 = 14

Feb 23, 2016 5:36 pm
Kama rushes forward, trying to keep the bugbears pinned in the doorway so they cannot flank the rest of the party. He drives his maul at the eyepatch-bugbear's abdomen hoping to get his opponent to double over, and with a surge of action lifts the head of the maul in an uppercut for the head.

Rolls

Maul vs Eyepatch - (1d20+5, 2d6+3)

1d20+5 : (15) + 5 = 20

2d6+3 : (55) + 3 = 13

Action Surge, Maul vs Eyepatch - (1d20+5, 2d6+3)

1d20+5 : (19) + 5 = 24

2d6+3 : (53) + 3 = 11

Feb 23, 2016 7:55 pm
Kama's furious assault catches Eyepatch off guard and he is hit first in the stomach with the maul and then with a vicious uppercut to the chin staggers him backwards. He somehow manages to keep his feet, but when he looks at you with hate you can see he is missing numerous teeth and his jaw hangs down loosely, obviously broken.
OOC:
Eyepatch (B1): Severely Wounded 3/27
Feb 24, 2016 12:19 am
Flashing back to the last bugbear she encountered, Hollow attempts to end the one with the eyepatch quickly, as Kama requested, before the others get behind them. "Cthul'ta'fan!!!"

Rolls

Eldritch Blast vs. Eye patch bugbear - (1d20+6, 1d10+4)

1d20+6 : (9) + 6 = 15

1d10+4 : (7) + 4 = 11

Feb 24, 2016 2:00 am
Hollow's attack sizzles into Eyepatch's chest. He looks down in disbelief at the massive hole in his chest before toppling forward into the room.
OOC:
Eyepatch is dead, nooooo!
Feb 24, 2016 5:41 pm
Rushing to stand to one side of the southern door, Wish will attack the first of the remaining two bugbears to step into the room.
OOC:
I don't think this will result in flanking, but hope springs eternal and I'm rolling the sneak attack damage just in case the bugbear engages with Kama.

Rolls

Rapier lunge, damage, sneak attack damage - (1d20+5, 1d8+3, 2d6)

1d20+5 : (18) + 5 = 23

1d8+3 : (8) + 3 = 11

2d6 : (13) = 4

Feb 24, 2016 6:25 pm
I keep to the back with an arrow pointed towards the door, waiting for sign of any other bugbears coming through.
Feb 24, 2016 7:07 pm
B2 steps over the body of Eyepatch and tries to shove Kama out of the way when suddenly Xora releases her shot and hits him in the chest (5 damage). He roars but manages to shove Kama back, and in so doing exposes his back to Wish's rapier. Wish wastes no time and plunges his blade into B2's back (15 damage), causing him to howl in pain again.

B3 steps through the gap left when B2 pushed Kama out of the way and attacks Kama. Even off balance Kama manages to deflect B3's swing.
OOC:
Eyepatch is dead
B2 has taken 20 damage and is in some serious pain
B3 is unharmed

Round 1 over. Player turn!

Rolls

Xora reaction attack on B2 - (1d20+5, 1d8+3)

1d20+5 : (10) + 5 = 15

1d8+3 : (2) + 3 = 5

B2 shove - (1d20+2)

(14) + 2 = 16

Kama resist shove - (1d20+5)

(10) + 5 = 15

B3 attack on Kama - (1d20+4)

(8) + 4 = 12

Feb 24, 2016 8:20 pm
Kama seeks to eliminate the threats as quickly as possible, reasoning that a dead bugbear cannot make any attacks. As he recovers from Bugbear2's push, Kama twists his maul to swipe across the monster's ribcage.

Rolls

Maul vs Bugbear2 - (1d20+5, 2d6+3)

1d20+5 : (2) + 5 = 7

2d6+3 : (36) + 3 = 12

Feb 24, 2016 8:26 pm
Wish calls out to his companions: "Nice shot, Xora!" and "Good one, Kama!" while dancing around, waving his rapier threateningly while looking for a good spot to lunge in again. Aha! There's his opportunity! (he thinks)

B2 is quicker than he appears, deftly blocking Kama's wild swing and turning away from Wish's strike, causing it to deflect off of his armor.

Trying to capitalize on he allies efforts, Hollow unleashes another Eldritch Blast, this one aimed at B2, hoing to take him down. "Cthul'fa'tan!!!"

B2 takes a solid hit to the chest from Hollow's attack but manages to remain standing. B3 takes an arrow in the belly (7 damage) and winces before plucking it out and snarling at Xora.

B2 takes a swing at Kama, hitting him right in the chest with his morning star (11 damage). B3 advances on the pesky ranger and viciously chops at her, scoring a solid hit (12 damage).

Kama attempts to end Bugbear2, in the hopes of making the battle slightly easier by not having multiple opponents. He swings his maul, trading a heavy-weapon hit with the goblinoid.

1d20+5 : (17) + 5 = 22

2d6+3 : (65) + 3 = 14

Kama trades hits with B2, and proves his might once again as his maul crushes the chest of his opponent (14 damage), who falls to the ground unable to breathe through his torn lungs.

Kama remembers there was someone spoken to in the area beyond. He steps over the bodies and proceeds southward to investigate.
Mar 4, 2016 5:38 pm
Kama heads south to enter the barracks. This barracks contains four roughly built wooden bunks, with heaped-up blankets and dirty dishes scattered about. A strong smell of unwashed bodies and rotten meat fills the air. There is a goblin hiding in the corner of the room, shaking with fear. Your sudden appearance causes the goblin to faint.
Mar 4, 2016 8:31 pm
Wish, following Kama into the other room, claps a friendly hand on Kama's shoulder. "You're so deadly, now you can just look at 'em and they drop dead!"

He chuckles, then gets out some rope from his pack. "Seriously, though: do we tie him up, or do we ensure that there's one less goblin in the world?"
Last edited March 4, 2016 8:31 pm

"Tie him up; he's no longer a threat," answers Kama. "Maybe he can join his colleagues with the Lionshield Coster and help out Linene."

Then in a low voice, after glancing over his shoulder at Hollow and Xora, Kama whispers conspiratorially to Wish, "I'm not that scary, am I? I mean... like, what... like, I don't just walk into the room and guys pee their pants, right?"
Mar 6, 2016 2:41 am
Wish ties up the goblin. He's tempted to make a joke, but it seems like Kama has some genuine concern. He answers back in a low voice as well: "...no, of course not. I was joking! Who knows why this little bugger passed out like this? Maybe he was excited to have visitors that weren't bugbears! I dunno." After he finished binding the fainting goblin, Wish investigates the room more thoroughly.
Mar 7, 2016 2:04 pm
Hollow catches a whiff of the bugbears' barracks and decides she wants nothing to do with it. She turns arround and heads for the wizard's workroom to the north and begins searching for anything of interest or value.
Mar 7, 2016 3:21 pm
Hollow opens to door to the wizard's workshop. A rat scurries across the floor and takes refuge under a large worktable set up with alembics, retorts, distillation coils, and other alchemical devices, all of it stewing and bubbling away. Bookshelves are crowded with sheaves of parchment and strange-looking tomes.

She finds a lot of notes on brewing potions of invisibility, but it appears he never perfected the process. She also finds an interesting tome, but you can't read it as it's written in dwarvish. Among the vials you find three that look valuable: a vial of mercury, one of dragon bile, and one of powdered nightshade.
Mar 7, 2016 3:46 pm
Hollow places the vials into her component pouch, then gathers the notes on invisibility and the tome written in dwarvish into her backpack. She contemplates the rat for a moment wondering if it might be a familiar, but decides it isn't worth the effort either way and rejoins the group.

"I believe that room is cleared of valuables. It would seem he kept everything worth having on him, the only thing in there were some rare components. There was a book that caught my fancy, but it is written in dwarvish and I can't read it."
Mar 7, 2016 4:18 pm
Kama busies himself with securing the Redbrands in the common room, removing their weapons and tying their hands.
Mar 7, 2016 4:34 pm
Kama searches the room, and the treasure scattered on the floor, and manages to find 75 cp, 55sp, 22 ep, 15 gp, and a gold earring set with a small ruby (30 gp).

On the Bugbears Kama finds 33 sp, and the eyepatch the lead bugbear was wearing is set with semiprecious stones (50 gp). He also finds in Eyepatch's pouch an iron key.
Mar 7, 2016 5:55 pm
Kama collects the treasure for Wish's safekeeping. "Was this it? Did we clear the ruins?"
Mar 8, 2016 6:10 am
"One more room I think, over there, and that was the extent of the reported forces, if we were told the truth. I'm not willing to bank on that though. So let's check out that last room and assume it is occupied." Hhollow points toward the armory and let's Kama and or Wish take the lead.
Mar 8, 2016 2:32 pm
"Maybe this key unlocks the door," offers Kama, wiggling the loot recovered from Eyepatch. "What about these chaps enjoying their uncomfortable rest?" he asks, looking down at the unconscious Redbrands.
Mar 8, 2016 8:34 pm
The key does indeed fit the door and it swings open easily to reveal the armory that was promised. Racks of weapons line the walls of this chamber, including spears, swords, crossbows, and bolts. A dozen dirty red cloaks hang from hooks by the door.

The weapon racks hold twelve spears, six shortswords, four longswords, six light crossbows, and eight quivers holding twenty crossbow bolts each.
Mar 8, 2016 9:03 pm
Kama's eyes take in the weaponry. "Sildar would find this useful for his constabulary," he says, then his eyes narrow. "But what were the Redbrands planning to do with all of this?" Kama shakes his head. "Bah, Sildar can ask these questions. We've still got a dwarf to find!"

He lets anyone resupply as needed, then secures the armory before pocketing the key.
Mar 9, 2016 3:45 am
"Agreed, Gundren is still missing. Let us escort these men to him for safe keeping and return to finding our friend."
Mar 9, 2016 10:48 pm
The party is easily able to escort the goblin and drunken Redbrands back into town. Sildar is very much impressed by your work, "Fine work! They've been plaguing the town for months and you cleared them out in a matter of a day. If I weren't here I'd never have believed it."

The goblin wakes up as the cell door slams shut and he cowers a little bit, "Please, don't leave poor Droop here! Droop don't do bad, Droop good goblin! Droop bullied by big, bad buggybears, please don't leave poor Droop!"
Mar 10, 2016 1:47 am
Kama hands the armory key over to Sildar, leaving a note to watch for the pit trap in one of the hallways. At the goblin's plea, Kama replies, "I guess that depends, Droop. Do you know the way to Cragmaw Castle?"
Mar 10, 2016 5:24 am
"You intend on using this one as a guide?"
Mar 10, 2016 5:39 am
Kama nods. "If he can lead us straight to the castle, it'd save us from having to seek out the druid and his directions."
Mar 10, 2016 2:01 pm
"I think...if Droop can...prove he is a good goblin, then we can find him work he can be happy with. In a place where he won't be bullied by anymore bad bugbears. Droop can work with other goblins an earn an honest wage, for as long as Droop behaves."

Hollow crouches down to get eye-to-eye with Droop. "Can you help us Droop? Do you know how to get to the castle?"

Rolls

Persuasion - (1d20+6)

(10) + 6 = 16

Mar 10, 2016 2:50 pm
Droops face falls, "Droop sorry, Droop not know way to big castle, only that it be in the north forest. Please, Droop is good goblin, Droop can help somehow, can work for kind miss!" he stares up at Hollow with large, pleading blue eyes, very out of the ordinary for his monstrous race. He appears to be speaking the truth, as far as you can tell.

Iarnoa grabs hold of the bag just as Wish grabs his wrist. Wish feels a heat coming from his pouch and suddenly there's a loud bang as Wish and Iarno are slammed against opposite walls (3 damage) and the pouch that was on Wish's hip is smoking on the floor. Iarno doesn't look to be conscious at the moment.

Rolls

Wish damage from wall slam - (1d6)

(3) = 3

"Are you all right, Wish?" Kama asks, plain and simple.
Mar 16, 2016 3:36 am
"Hmm." The threat appears to be neutralized. I return the arrow to my quiver.
Mar 16, 2016 9:48 pm
Wish shakes his head dazedly, and then looks with panic at the smouldering remains of his pouch. "What? Is it...? The voice...!" Wish leaps to his feet and charges the cell that Iarno is in, clanging against the bars and rattling them savagely, gnashing his teeth and yelling. "I'LL KILL YOU!!"
Mar 16, 2016 9:58 pm
[Note to Wish]
Naatkinson sent a note to spaceseeker19
You can all see, now that the smoke has cleared, that their is a black rock shot with dull red veins peeking its corner out of the pouch.
Mar 16, 2016 10:07 pm
"He seems fine," Kama says to the general crowd, apparently ignoring the outburst publicly.
Mar 18, 2016 7:51 am
Wish bows his head and takes a few deep breaths. Then he shakes the bars one more time and turns away in a huff. He gathers up the remains of his pouch and the stone and grins weakly at his friends. "What do you say we get out of here, get something to eat? My treat?"
Mar 18, 2016 11:40 am
I'm about to respond that I am capable of finding my own meals, but instead simply nod once towards Wish.
Mar 18, 2016 4:27 pm

From his observations Kama is not 100% sure what happened. Iarno seemed to get the worst of it, but you can't tell if it was just bumping his head in the explosion or something more magical in nature.
Mar 18, 2016 7:22 pm
Wish heads to the Inn, trying to engage the taciturn Xora in conversation to cover his embarrassment.

"So what do you think they'll have to eat at the Stonehill Inn tonight? I'm famished."

...

"I feel like celebrating after taking care of all those bullies AND their bugbear allies!"

...

"Uh...what do you feel like eating tonight? I feel like I still don't know you very well, even after all we've been through together for Gundren and all..."

Basically he's just babbling, trying to deflect attention away from his outburst.
Mar 18, 2016 7:43 pm
"What weapon is it that you carry?" I point at the pouch.
Mar 18, 2016 7:57 pm
"Weapon? What? What weapon?" Wish dissembles, but then he looks at Xora. She's easily the most trustworthy and dependable dragon person he's ever seen, with such honest, open features on her muzzle. She's saved his life and fought by his side for days. He relents.

"You mean this." He stops in the road and pulls out the chunk of obsidian shot through with dull red veins barely visible in the black glass. It gives off an aura of unease, so slight that one could convince oneself that one was imagining it. Certainly Wish has. "Well, I've had this with me for a long time. It's sort of a memento of bad times. I keep it with me to remember how much better things are for me now, with friends I can rely on." Wish says this confidently, but inside he is very tense. He's long suspected that the people who've been hunting him have been pursuing the rock more than him. Could Xora turn out to be one of his hunters, even after all they've been through together?
Mar 18, 2016 8:07 pm
"Dangerous? I stare at it, expecting it to explode again, then look back at Wish. "Did you intend to harm that prisoner?"

"I don't know what happened back there; this rock has never done that before..."

Wish considers for a moment. "I...I guess I did really want to hurt him. I thought he'd destroyed the rock, somehow, and I was so angry...! I don't know why I was so angry, really. I couldn't bear the thought of losing it, I guess. How dare he try to take it from me?!"
Mar 19, 2016 6:00 pm
Hollow observes the man through the bars for a moment before peaking to Kama,"I am unsure what insight I can offer. I don't understand what happened either. I suppose we should call upon the cleric. I can get Jozin and Cyril to track her down."
Mar 19, 2016 9:31 pm
"Right, let's get the Sister, then," says Kama as he watches the unconscious man in the cell. "Hopefully he still has his mind intact, so he can stand trial with the Lords Alliance."

He turns and prepares to leave, rejoin Wish and Xora, and plan their next move.
Mar 21, 2016 2:33 am
I nod to Wish in seeming agreement. "Keep it out of sight." Then I continue towards the inn. "I am a capable cook, but sometimes it is enjoyable to try something... different. Perhaps a stew?"
Mar 21, 2016 10:13 pm
The party reconvenes at the Stonehill Inn, where they meet back up with Jozin, Cyril, and Seipora.
Mar 22, 2016 12:28 am
Kama asks what's special on the menu today. After a full day of sneaking in and out of ruins, the half-orc has worked up an appetite.

"What's our next order of business?" Kama asks the group. "Find the druid for directions to Cragmaw Castle?"
Mar 22, 2016 1:59 am
Wish nods at Xora's wisdom and pockets the obsidian once more.

At the Stonehill, cheerfully buys Jozin, Seipora, and Cyril victuals as well (secretly relieved that there aren't further comments about his awkward outburst). With some food in his belly and the good company of his friends, Wish has soon forgotten his gloom. "I for one don't like the idea of orcs in the area again. While I personally know an excellent person of orcish descent" - here he claps Kama on the back "--no one I'd rather have by my side in a fight! -- the last time orcs were seen in any numbers in this area, they swarmed through the region and destroyed this very town. It was orcs that destroyed Phandelver, isn't that right, Toblen?" Wish calls out to the proprietor. Wish takes a sip. "Still, that is in the other direction from Thundertree - east, rather than north - and it would take us days. Perhaps we should take the horses that Harbin has let us borrow and find the druid first. I am worried about Gundren." He looks at Seipora, Jozin, and Cyril. "Have any of you heard any talk about Gundren's brotherss? Nundren and Tharden should be here; it's strange that they still haven't arrived in town. They should know about Gundren. I wish I knew where they were."

Toblen nods grimly, worried about that very thing, "Yes, it was orcs, though it was many, many years ago now."

Jozin speaks up in response to Wish's question, "Just that they haven't returned. Barthen, who I spoke to earlier this day is getting quite concerned. They're usually not out this long without coming into town to restock."

Kama frowns, idly picking at a tusk. "If Sildar had more time, he could muster a militia. I first thought he could convert the Redbrands in a pinch, but I'm starting to have second thoughts that they'd bolt and run at the first sign of orcs; I don't think they have anything or any family tying them to this place."

He sighs. "Gah! Both the Gundren and the orcs are dire things that need to be addressed. This town is suddenly open to an invasion, and your friend is still out there, and I sure as hell don't want to split the group up."

Kama turns to Wish. "I leave it to you. You know your friend more than we do. If you say we need to get to Gundren now, I'm with you all the way."
Mar 24, 2016 5:23 pm
"We face two equally difficult challenges. We don't know if Gundren, or the Rockseeker's are even alive at this point. I fear their long absence form town might mean they were found by those who took Gundren. If the orcs organize and strike while we seek the druid toward Thundertree, we won't have safe haven to work from in our search for the Rockseekers. To many unknown factors to make an educated decision. Might as well flip a coin to choose our next move."
Mar 25, 2016 5:14 pm
"Save Gundren now. If we wait, he may be forgotten."
Mar 28, 2016 1:18 pm
"You're right, we have to keep looking for Gundren. It could be years before the orcs actually do anything, but Gundren may not even have a few days," Wish says, finishing his meal.
Mar 28, 2016 3:45 pm
Kama nods. "Then we'll head for Thundertree and the druid," he says, "after a rest. I don't know about the rest of you, but all that dancing with the Redbrands wore me out."
Mar 29, 2016 5:17 am
"The druid it is then. I agree to the rest. It has been a full day. I think I shall retire now."

Turning to Seipora, Joizn and Cyril, "Come, let us speak, I have tasks I need your help with."

Once alone in Hollow's room...

"I need you three to stay here while we go to Thundertree. I need you to watch this place. Specifically, Halia Thornton at the miner's exchange and Sister Garaele, at the temple. Thornton has connection to Albrek and his Redbrands that she is trying to conceal. Be cautious, don't visit or ask questions directly, just watch. As for the priestess, it isn't that I don't trust her, but she might need help. Try to keep an eye on her too, but again, keep your distance. Finally, we have heard of a potential threat to the town. There are orcs working at banditry. Be prepared to flee at the first sign of trouble. Sleep in shifts so that one of you is ready at all times.
Mar 29, 2016 6:50 am
The group's decision made, Kama excuses himself and checks in with Sister Garaele on the status of the bartender from the Sleeping Giant, as well as news of the Dendrars.

While with the Sister, Kama hesitantly asks about Tymora; what does she stand for, how she favors fortune. To the Sister herself, how one might resolve feelings of fortune favoring those that, in Kama's mind, don't deserve it.

In Hollow's Room
Jozin and Cyril nod to Hollow, "As you say, it will be done."

Seipora rolls her eyes, "It's so boring here! There's nothing to do!"

At the Temple of Tymora
"One should be bold, for to be bold is to live. A brave heart and willingness to take risks beat out carefully wrought plans nine times out of ten. Place yourself in the hands of fate and trust your own luck. Bear and conduct yourselves as your own masters, showing your good or bad fortune as confidence in the Lady. Chase your own unique goals, and the Lady aids the chase. Without direction or goals, you soon know the embrace of Beshaba, for those on no set course are at the mercy of misfortune, which has no mercy at all," Sister Garaele recites easily, "That is the Dogma of Tymora. She blesses those who take chances and follow their dreams."

"Those that do not follow a righteous path inevitably find themselves in the embrace of Beshaba, Tymora's wicked sister. That is Tymora's will, though some call it Karma," She looks concernedly at Kama, "You seem... uncomfortable with this talk of faith; to what God do you give your fealty?"
Mar 29, 2016 5:37 pm
Kama shifts his weight. "I don't pledge myself to any specific deity," he says. "I grew up a farmer; we'd pray for favor from anyone who would listen, really. Some folk would come by and say that the rains were blessings from some name, but... I don't know. It always felt to be beyond that. My dad used to say that Gruumsh would give and take depending on how strong you were, but I think it was my mom that said it didn't matter which of the gods you had faith in, but that you believe."

The half-orc averts his gaze, focusing on a table or chair, anything to the side. "Never really thought about it much, but after mucking through that manor... I think it's time I started to believe in something. I keep thinking about little Carp, how close he was to that thing under the ruins. I just don't know where I'm going to go with these thoughts, what I'd actually do. Is there such a thing as believing in life itself, or is it more a case of destroying the threats to life?"
Mar 29, 2016 8:41 pm
"You may believe in whatever you'd like," she responds, "That is the beauty of being a reasoning being. But there is a Goddess who would seem to match what's in your heart: Chauntea, the Goddess of Life and the Harvest. There is also Yondalla, Goddess of Green Fields, Life, Protection, and Family."
Mar 29, 2016 8:59 pm
"You've given me some direction," says Kama with a nod. "Thanks. Perhaps I will look into Chauntea"

With his philosophical dilemma quelled a bit, Kama returns to the inn for a few ales, companionship, raucous laughter, and rest.
Mar 29, 2016 9:13 pm
"You're welcome," she says, and smiles brilliantly at you, "Please, come back again when your heart is not so heavy, I would like to get to know you better."

Before you leave she lays a hand over a wound on your side and you feel healing energy flowing into you (14 healing). She winks and turns away to tend to her duties with a coy smile on her face.

"I understand Seipora, but I need you to be safe. You and Jozin & Cyril are what keep me focused. Besides, staying here is going to be much nicer than being on the road. At least until or if those Orcs attack.
Mar 31, 2016 1:31 pm
Seipora sighs grandly, "I suppose you're right, I just can't wait to get back to a real city."
Apr 3, 2016 3:39 am
I eat my fill and take an inventory of my weapons (specifically my remaining arrows) before I retire for the evening.
Apr 4, 2016 2:05 pm
Your night passes uneventfully and you set off in the morning toward Thundertree. There are two paths to get there:

1. Head straight north and walk with the Neverwinter Wood on your right, you will get there in three days, but the land is a bit more untamed.

2. Head west, then north to the High Road to Neverwinter and then cut back east. This will get you there in four days, and is a bit less wild.
Apr 4, 2016 3:54 pm
Kama defers to the ranger for guidance through the wild, and follows Xora's lead.
Apr 6, 2016 3:08 pm
"We go North. I will lead us, but you must do as I say or the dangers of the wild will take you. We must move quickly."
