Part 2: Phandalin

Kama briefly turns his head, but says nothing and remains outside. For him, the next destination would be the Sleeping Giant, where they can "coax" some information out of the attendees.
Nov 22, 2015 4:00 pm
"As I'm sure you've heard the Redbrands spend most of their time at the Sleeping Giant, though I've heard they have also been seen skulking around the Tresendar Manor in town."
Nov 22, 2015 8:34 pm
Hollow tenses for a moment when the crossbow appears but relaxes when she sees Halia isn't threatening the party with it. "Yes, we are aware the Sleeping Giant is where they congregate."
Nov 23, 2015 1:10 am
Wish is eager to go, but is convinced that Halia could communicate more, if only they ask in the right way. "What can you tell us about Glasstaff? I don't want to get the wrong person by mistake and not get paid. Oh, and I don't want to kill random people. Yeah, that too."
Nov 23, 2015 1:32 am
"The only things I know are that Glasstaff is a man, the leader of the Redbrands, and is named so for the glass staff he always carries. My guess is that he is a mage of some kind," she responds to your inquiries.
Nov 23, 2015 3:44 am
I snort derisively but manage to keep my thoughts to myself. How typical that there is no definitive information to be found.
Nov 23, 2015 4:00 am
Kama maintains his watch of the street. Mage. Figures. He begins thinking about counter-measures and tactics.
Nov 24, 2015 2:48 am
Halia waits for you to mull over the information, "Do you accept or not? I don't have all day for this..."
Nov 24, 2015 3:15 am
"I don't either. Go back to your business. We are done here and will let you know when the task is complete."
Nov 24, 2015 6:41 am
"Yeah, we'll get him, and his Red Capes, too."

Wish winks at the miners poring over the map and heads out with the others, mounts up and begins to ride his horse slowly down the street, toward Destiny.

...that, and the Shrine and Inn, where he'll turn right to head down to the Sleeping Dragon.
Nov 24, 2015 6:43 pm
The Sleeping Giant is a run down and dirty building on the east side of town. There are two men in red cloaks, similar to those that the others wore, standing on the porch. They watch you for a moment before heading inside. As you get closer six armed men step out. Three of them have crossbows trained on you and three have short swords drawn, they are about twenty feet away at this point.

One of the sword-wielders speaks up, "Looks like the tough guys came to pay us a visit, eh? We'll give you one more chance to give us your stuff and get yourselves out of town before we have to hurt you."
Nov 24, 2015 11:14 pm
Kama drops the reins of his horse, having led the animal through town thus far. He unslings his pack as he stalks towards the men, and holds it before him as though giving it up. But he keeps moving on foot, closing the distance.

OOC: Editing to mention that I'm on foot. Missed the fact that we already had the horses. I hadn't RPed that I was using a horse, so could I assume that I have been leading the animal all this time?

As they ride up and the Redbrands issue their challenge, Wish looks to see if there's a water barrel or other source of water nearby.

One of the great things about horses, Wish thinks, is how big they are. Following Kama's lead, he turns his horse's head and dismounts...but he does it so that he comes down on the other side of his horse, Giuseppe (he's just named it), from where the Sleeping Giant and the Redbrands are (hopefully this gives him some cover bonus to AC), which also happens to be the side with his bow. He moves slowly, peacefully, but as he does so, he thinks intensely at Hollow: *Hit these jerks hard and we'll mop 'em up...*
Nov 25, 2015 12:08 am
The red cloaked speaker calls out when Kama is about 10 feet away, "That's far enough, drop your things and go!"
Nov 25, 2015 12:19 am
"No." I attempt to drop an arrow at that man's foot. Not to kill him, but if I leave him a little broken, who's gonna complain? I concentrate intently on him, focusing my hunter's instincts on memorizing his movements and scent.

OOC: Hunter's Mark on that guy- You choose a creature you can see within range and mystically mark it as your quarry. Until the spell ends, you deal an extra 1d6 damage to the target whenever you hit it with a weapon attack, and you have advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) or Wisdom (Survival) check you make to find it. If the target drops to 0 hit points before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature.

Rolls

Attack! - (1d20+7)

(9) + 7 = 16

Damage - (1d8+3, 1d6)

1d8+3 : (6) + 3 = 9

1d6 : (5) = 5

Seeing Xora fire, the bloodlust takes control. Wish draws and fires as well, aiming for the man on the left end.

(OoC note: whether it happens this round or next round, it's his next action)

Edit: at early levels, it's rarely good when your attack and damage are the same value!)

Rolls

Bow shot, damage on a hit - (1d20+5, 1d6+3)

1d20+5 : (4) + 5 = 9

1d6+3 : (6) + 3 = 9

Nov 25, 2015 1:59 pm
Xora smoothly draws her bow and releases the arrow, which sinks deep into the porch between the ruffian's feet. They are very impressed

Wish doesn't have as much luck in his shot and it goes far wide, slamming into the side of the building ten feet to his left.

The crossbow users return fire quickly but the first two shots go harmlessly wide and the third on sinks into the side of Wish's horse (4 Damage). The horse whinnies in pain and runs off around the corner, leaving Wish dangerously exposed.

The ruffians will be labeled thus: From left to right, those with crossbows will be labeled Crossbow 1, 2, and 3 and the sword wielders will be Sword 1, 2, and 3.

Now that the readies actions are resolved we will roll for regular initiative, ignore the other rolls for the Sword attacks, they were made in error.

Crossbow 1 and 2 fire again on Xora but their hands, still shaking from her display of prowess with her bow, can't line up the shot properly and they fire far wide of any potential targets.

Crossbow 3 once again, proves his skill as his shot grazes Wish, slicing across the side of his ribs (4 piercing damage).

Sword 1 and 2 rush Kama, trying to bring him down before he can draw the massive weapon strapped on his back. Kama sidesteps the first blow, but is caught off guard by the sudden assault and is hit three times in quick succession , 7, 7, and 5 piercing damage: 19 total)

Sword 3 follows behind the volley of bolts and does a sweeping strike toward Xora's midsection which she easily draws back from, but his follow-up, a quick stab to the stomach digs in painfully (4 piercing damage).

Crossbow 1-3 are still on the porch: 20 feet from Hollow, Wish, and Xora, and 10 feet from Kama. Sword 1 and 2 are on Kama, and Sword 3 is on Xora.
I'm assuming Kama is going to use his Relentless Endurance trait, so I didn't play out knocking him unconscious. If my assumption is incorrect, let me know and I'll update this!

Kama liked it better when they were going up against goblins.

The half-orc grunts as the short swords pierce through his chain vest, not just in pain but also in the knowledge that he's going to have to get that repaired... again. The thought is enough that the orcish blood in him boils over, and the battlelust dilates his pupils. Kama's nostrils flare as a low rumbling growl escapes his throat, rising in volume until it culminates in a spit-ridden roar.

Kama looks for something to direct his new-found anger and resilience upon, and like the old wives' tales of bulls, those flowing red cloaks next to him immediately attract his attention.

The greataxe seems to magically appear in his hands as Kama brings the weapon about with practiced ease, muscle-memory taking over and adrenaline supercharging his body. The blade swings around hungrily at the two Redbrands, seeking blood to oil itself with.

OOC: Relentless Endurance, oh yes. Also using Action Surge to attack twice this round, and Second Wind as my bonus action.

Relentless Endurance: When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Second Wind: You have a limited well of stamina that you can draw on to protect yourself from harm. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your fighter level. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Action Surge: Starting at 2nd level, you can push yourself beyond your normal limits for a moment. On your turn, you can take one additional action on top of your regular action and a possible bonus action. This will be directed at Sword1 again if the first attack does not down him, otherwise it will be applied to Sword2.

Edit: Don't know if I hit with any of my attacks (doubtful), but just in case, re-rolling 1s for damage due to Great Weapon Fighting style.

With Giuseppe gone and crossbow fire raining down on him, Wish draws his rapier and rushes up to Xora's side (using his free dash action), attacking Sword 3 while still looking to find a water barrel.
