Xora stalks into the room, silent as a shadow.

Wish and Kama stand by the pillar, ready to step around and surprise whatever in on the other side. They don't hear any other noises from behind the pillar.
Dec 17, 2015 10:43 pm
Kama lunges around the pillar, his maul readied, but checked in case he does not want to smash whatever's on the other side.

ROUND 1: SURPRISE ROUND FOR PLAYERS

Kama lunges around the corner and sees a disgusting creature. It is crouched down, but would stand to his chest if it extended to its full height. Its most notable feature is the single large eye that dominates its face. Its grayish-green skin is scaly and it has claws at the end of its hands. It stares at Kama in shock, totally caught off guard by his sudden rush.

Rolling initiative just in case Kama decides to attack.
After taking averages of your rolls the initiatives were a tie, so players will get the first turn
Xora and Hollow won't know what's there unless Kama or Wish shout it back to them

1d20+3 : (10) + 3 = 13

If it's one thing Kama learned in this time in Phandalin, it's that his appearance and that of his companions do not imply intent. Indeed, the townsfolk were very accepting of them; perhaps it is time Kama followed suit.

"Who are you?" hisses Kama, keeping his voice down. He doesn't want to cause undue noise, but his tone is meant to indicate that he will not hesitate to smash this being against the stone if it threatens his friends.

While Kama is willing to give each creature a chance, they are in the Redbrand hideout. He remains wary.

OOC: Do I know anything about Nothics?

Rolls

Nature - (1d20-1)

(11) - 1 = 10

Dec 18, 2015 4:16 pm
The creature makes an odd hissing sound, almost like a rasping chuckle and you can hear a voice in your head. "I am Grock, why are you in my home?" the voice is followed by the sounds of mad, echoing laughter in your head. It's a very disturbing sensation.

Kama knows pretty much nothing about nothics. He'd never even heard about them before this.
Dec 18, 2015 4:49 pm
Kama recoils a bit. He is used to voices in his head thanks to his experiences with Hollow, but the laugh is something new.

"Grock," he says, repeating the name to give him time to momentarily collect himself. "This is your home? So you are with the Redbrands?" Kama tightens his grip on his maul, but maintains his position. He tries to keep the creature's attention to allow Wish and the others the opportunity to surround it.

*Eye monster...!* Wish thinks at Hollow, hoping she can receive his messages. *...but not attacking? Come up, but be wary...*
Dec 19, 2015 1:22 am
"We knew about his from our 'friend' at the bar. This creature works with the Redbrands." Hollow moves forward until she can see the aberrant creature. When she lays eyes on it a cold fear grips her. This isn't anything like the creature in the pit back in Thay, but it's nature is undeniable. Attempting to be silent she intones the her Eldritch Blast as quietly as possible. "Cthul'ta'fan."

Rolls

Eldritch blast vs. the nothic - (1d20+6, 1d10+4)

1d20+6 : (11) + 6 = 17

1d10+4 : (10) + 4 = 14

Stealth casting roll - (1d20+2)

(10) + 2 = 12

Hollow's attack hits the Nothic in the side, knocking it off balance. Your minds are all filled with an incoherent scream, which causes a massive headache.

Nothic: Wounded (14 damage)

Xora, Wish, and Kama can all take an action before the Nothic responds.

Kama reels as his head feels like it explodes. I thought I was done with my hangover.

As Hollow's words and magic mark the nothic as foe, Kama spins his maul into a backhand swing, seeking to smash the creature against the pillar and keep it pinned.

Rolls

Maul vs Nothic - (1d20+5, 2d6+3)

1d20+5 : (7) + 5 = 12

2d6+3 : (53) + 3 = 11

Dec 21, 2015 4:37 pm
Kama, off balance from the suddenly massive headache misses his target narrowly. His maul slams into the pillar, causing chunks of it to fall out and dust to fall from the ceiling.
Dec 22, 2015 5:21 am
I slide slightly behind Wish when I hear the commotion. Without a second thought, I notch an arrow and immediately release it at the Nothic.

Rolls

Arrow - (1d20+7)

(17) + 7 = 24

Damage - (1d8+3)

(4) + 3 = 7

Dec 22, 2015 2:22 pm
Xora launches her arrow, catching the Nothic right in the back. It screams again and looks around for an escape route.

Just waiting for Wish to take an action before the Nothic's turn
Dec 23, 2015 5:26 am
Wish attempts to skewer the eye monster, or at least perforate it a little...anything to stop the screaming!

(Note: the rolled damage was wrong - my mistake; I tried to chain dice rolls for damage as in 1d8+1d6+3; the site interpreted that as 1d8+1 + 1d6+3. So subtract one point from that damage total if it's a hit....so it's 15 points of damage, not 16)

Rolls

Rapier attack, damage (with sneak attack) - (1d20+5, 1d8+1, 1d6+3)

1d20+5 : (12) + 5 = 17

1d8+1 : (6) + 1 = 7

1d6+3 : (6) + 3 = 9

Dec 23, 2015 1:52 pm
Wish's attack catches the nothic in the back causing yet another pained scream. The creature knows it's overmatched and darts away, slipping right by Wish and crawling into the chasm.

Nothic took disengage action to run away from you. You managed to do 36 damage to it. It looked pretty beat up before it left
Dec 23, 2015 2:19 pm
Now that the nothic is out of sight you can see several hallways. There is one to the left of the entrance, which Hollow is standing at the end of, another lies across the first bridge, another can be seen to the left just beyond the second bridge spanning the chasm. There is also what appears to be the opening to another room straight ahead on the other side of the bridge.

Kama peers into the chasm to see if there's a convenient way down. He is loathe to leave the creature alive, lest it slip away and warn Glasstaff. He listens intently, both to determine the nothic's location, and to check if their battle has attracted any other attention.

Rolls

Perception - (1d20)

(5) = 5

Dec 24, 2015 6:24 pm
Hollow stares daggers at the place the creature disappeared to. She seethes with a desire to go after it and end it's existence, but knows there are more pressing matters. She turns her attention to the other ways out of this room and tries to match them up to what little she has seen of the ruined domicile above, assuming this to be some kind of basement or root cellar. She tries to determine the most likely way up to the Redbrand hideout.

::I'm not sure what the best skill would be for this, if a skill roll is needed. In the old days I would have said Dungeoneering, but that isn't an option. My best guess would be Investigation, but Perception makes sense as well. I'll roll the Investigation, if it should be perception the bonus is actually +0. It its another skill, let me know and feel free to adjust my results accordingly.::

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20+4)

(9) + 4 = 13

Dec 24, 2015 6:44 pm
There's another room up ahead. Let's scout that before we go skipping down dark hallways.

Kama points to the indicated room for the benefit of the others, and starts to move to the far bridge.
Dec 24, 2015 7:17 pm
Kama, you are able to see that the walls of the chasm are very rough and would be easy to climb up and down. You aren't able to hear or see the nothic from here though.

Hollow, you are able to determine that you are in the basement of the manor, which is where the thug you had captured indicated the hideout was. You do know that the upper floors are, to all appearances, abandoned completely and all the activity occurs down here.
