03 Return to Dawnsmoor

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

Your journey to Dawnsmoor from the goblin camp has passed relatively uneventfully, other than a couple of travellers you have passed on the road you have not run into any trouble and have made good time. Your mood would be feeling a bit better at returning to 'civilisation' but the weather which has taken a distinct turn for the worse during the last day and you are all thoroughly drenched. The daylight is fading as you crest a rise and see the glimmering lights of the city laid out before you and the distant sounds of city life drift through the air, another hour or so and you should be able to find somewhere warm and dry to rest for the evening….
OOC:
It is the third day since your encounter with the goblins. You will all be on no Wounds or Strain as between your abilities and natural rest you would have been able to get those sorted. As for any crits (just Pomin I think) those will still need tending to unless you want to spend a Story Point to say you met a friendly traveling medic on the road (SP Pool has been reset) who sorted any critical injuries you were still suffering with.

Khurza has been in arguably worse weather conditions, but she never did like the rain. It got into her clothes, her hair, not to mention the unpleasant feeling of being soaked. She doesn't talk about this displeasure, instead soldiering on in relative silence, only speaking when responding to a question or when making a decision during the journey back.

When the city lights are within view she lets out a sigh of relief, and simply says "Finally."
Aug 14, 2019 2:07 am
"Yes! At last, buildings. With roofs on them." Jabari holds his cloak above his head as he plods forward to avoid getting thoroughly soaked. It's not working. "Back home, we can go weeks without seeing water. Your land is upside-down." As the town grows closer, he asks, "You two know this city better than I do. Should we visit this magistrate of yours to claim our reward or find an inn with a fireplace first?"
Aug 14, 2019 5:16 am
"I doubt he accepts 'visitors' at this hour, these noble wannabe types love their schedules. Best to rest now and meet in the morning, lest we get shooed away."
Aug 15, 2019 12:14 pm
Pomin runs his hands through his hair his fingers still not fully under his control he realizes with a frown, "Rain masked our scent and path when we extracted ourselves from their lands. They might regroup into another warband under a survivor but that wasn't the job we took to kill them all... The Laughing Gnome has ample services, food, ale, and warmth, we'll send word for a meeting with the assistant... I think we should have some money still on the books to pay also." Pomin states wiping water from his face. He heads that way once he gets his bearings.

Jabari burned all the fetishes and talismans, so we shouldn't have those with us.
Aug 15, 2019 6:07 pm
OOC:
In the tent I searched? I'd totally take them to figure out where she got her ingredients from.
Aug 15, 2019 9:02 pm
OOC:
Yeah, it's in the IC. He took them down, put them into a bag, and burned them. :)
Aug 18, 2019 6:53 pm
OOC:
lets say if Pomin wanted to grab a few to study he could have whilst Jabari was busy gathering up the ones that seemed most ‘profane’, that sound good?
You quickly make your way into the city proper. Whilst Dawnsmoor lacks walls there are still usually guards wandering the perimeter, checking on travellers entering and leaving the city, but this evening the weather seems to be keeping even them from the streets. You make your way as quickly as you can to the edge of the Market district and find the Laughing Gnome quite full with a lot of people seeming to prefer the tap room here to the conditions outside. As you step inside the wave of warmth you feel is almost painful to your cold, wet extremities and at the smell of cooking meats wafting out of the kitchen reminds you lol how long it has been since you last ate. Most of the patrons, a mix of races but a majority of orcs, give you space to move to the bar once they realise how damp you all are and you quickly get the attention of the haggard looking human trying to serve everyone "Yeah...be with...one sec" he shouts accross acknowledging various people all clamouring to order things. "You lot Wanting rooms I take it? It’ll be 6 silvers for a room, up to you if yer sharing, each room’ll come with one meal either now or int’ mornin, extra meals ‘ll be a silver each. How many yo....KELLOS DAMNIT HENDRA ILL BE WITH YA IN A MINUTE!...sorry, how many rooms ya want?" he waits on your answer as the orc he shouted at (who was trying to cut in line) gives you all a brief scowl.
Aug 18, 2019 7:28 pm
Jabari slides a silver across the counter. "I'll have that meal now." He then looks to the other two, unsure of their preferences on rooming. "Either one of you snore?"
Aug 19, 2019 6:04 am
"Make it two." Khurza puts her own silver on the countertop, taking a seat and stretching her arms. "I imagine if I did someone would tell me by now." She addresses Jabari's concern without any humor in her voice.
Aug 19, 2019 12:20 pm
A meal here as well good sir, once we're feed and dry maybe I'll see about helping out, either lightening the mood or helping out. he yells out to the man.

"I'm sure we'll all snore like the dead tonight... unless this fellow stabs us in our sleep." Pomin comments to the others gesturing with his head nodding to the orc that tried cutsys.
Aug 20, 2019 1:16 pm
The barkeep scoops up your coins and nods over towards the fire "Find yourselves a place to sit and I'll get your meals out to you but given how we're filling up if you're wanting rooms best decide soon" he turns and smiles at Pomin "Ah don't mind Hendra, they might have a face like a smacked backside at the best of times but they're harmless enough".

You manage to find a spot close enough to the fire that you start to dry out whilst you are eating. The food they bring is a thick fish stew, some fresh bread, and a mug of ale each. The gnomish server who brings it over has obviously been doing the job for a while as even though the inn is almost full they move through the crowd with ease.
Aug 21, 2019 1:15 am
OOC:
I think we were all cool with sharing a room?
Jabari scarfs down the meal and drains the ale--a far cry from the millet beer of his homeland, but passable after so many days on the road. "I never had my own room until I came to your cold land. Never mind my own bed. My father had three wives, and I am one of seventeen children. I'll be happy on the floor. So long as the room is warm." He shrugs. "But you've only known me for a few days, so let me know if you'd prefer I take my own room."
Aug 21, 2019 5:15 am
Khurza likewise enjoys her meal, showing her appreciation by eating heartily. "Three wives? Far too many. In the Broken Plains we do not have the luxury to have such an abundance of lovers, or offspring." She takes a swig from her ale. "We've slept on the road together, this is no different. Comfier perhaps, but the principles remains the same."
OOC:
yes.
Aug 21, 2019 1:12 pm
Pomin eats one hand tapping the table as if mentally working things out. He nods to the rest. "I don't mind sharing a room. We'll send word to meet with the assistant in the morning if he isn't dead of exhaustion and stress."
Aug 21, 2019 8:54 pm
"I very much doubt he knows what rest is." Khurza chuckles at her little joke, apparently finding it hilarious.
Aug 30, 2019 11:57 am
OOC:
Sorry I thought I'd posted something on here earlier in the week
As you finish your meal you flag the barkeeper down and make arrangements for a room for the night. Although it has only been a few days since some of you left the city it seems like weeks since you took your ease somewhere 'civilised' and you find yourselves able to relax and enjoy the remainder of the evening. The following morning you rise and are provided with breakfast if you want it and are soon ready to leave the Laughing Gnome.
OOC:
Are you heading straight to City Hall or are you wanting to do anything else before hand?
Aug 30, 2019 12:11 pm
"Feels like almost a full year has gone by since I last slept inside a build on a bed..." Pomin states with a stretch and a yawn.

"To City Hall and then the merchants?" Pomin asks smiling impishly.
Aug 30, 2019 12:40 pm
Jabari nods. "Lead the way."
Aug 30, 2019 4:38 pm
"Lets hope the deal has not changed in our absence." Khurza says cautiously.
Sep 2, 2019 1:39 pm
The storm you arrived with last night has broken and blessedly the weather is much better, almost pleasant for Pomin and Khurza although to Jabari conditions still seem almost intolerably cold and damp. You head from the Laughing Gnome and move away from the bustle of the orc market. Even at this hour the city seems to be almost alive with activity but as you head towards the only walled section of the city, the Elven district, and as you do the general number of people on the streets drops as you enter what is obviously a more affluent area of the city. You soon arrive at the square where the city hall sits, a couple of guards stad by the doors to the main entrance and a couple of what appear to be clerks are busy clearing away those notices that were pinned to the tree stump that stands near the doors that have been mostly destryed by yesterdays weather.
Sep 2, 2019 8:26 pm
"You people and your stone houses. This is where your friend works?"
Sep 3, 2019 4:44 am
"Stones are a fine material, don't disrespect." Khurza retorts despite not caring much for stonework. "And I do not consider anyone in there a friend, neither should you. Insects the lot of them."
Sep 3, 2019 2:07 pm
Oh come now even sand was once stone before it's kissed by wind and weather... and Lyle wasn't that bad, bit dead and sad but an okay guy in a gloom overworked way. Pomin states mentioning Lyle Venderndt.

"We're here to see Lyle Venderndt with the report from the outskirts of the Kurnan Lake region." Pomin states walking towards the guard to get through and down to business of the outbreif and getting paid.

As you approach the City Hall the guards note your approach and one moves to block your passage. "What is your business here?" they say without preamble.
Sep 3, 2019 3:26 pm
Pomin blinks and looks at Jabari and Khurza and then back to the guard before he repeats himself. "Down here! Uh... We, the three of us, are here to see Lyle Venderndt with the report on our mission to the outskirts of the Kurnan Lake region which we were requested to scout by the Lord, Lord Ethanath, who speaks for the council... of Dawnsmoor."

Jabari bows ever so slightly, revealing his fine cloak as he does so. "We bring news that Mr. Venderndt will want to hear," he adds, hoping to convince the guard to step aside.
OOC:
Trying to add a boost to any Charm check if necessary. The cloak removes 1 setback, and Jabari has Knack for It for Charm.

The guard does not seem to take what you have said with any great surprise and simply nods. "Very well, if you would wait here I will send him a message" and he turns and heads inside. A couple of minutes pass before the guard returns "If you would follow me please" he says and turns without waiting for a response. He leads you through a route familiar to Pomin and Khurza, taking you past the room you had the meeting with the magistrate in and further down the hall into what appears to be an an area of small offices. As he reaches one of the doors he simply opens the door without pausing to knock and gestures for you to follow him in. Sitting behind a desk covered with papers is the small and wiry figure of Lyle Venderndt....
Sep 9, 2019 7:35 am
As you enter the room Lyle doesn't look up immediately, seeming to be fixated on the documents he is currently working on. After a few seconds he glances up and then jerks in surprise realising you are there, his movements very much reminding you all of a startled bird. Quickly straightening the glasses that are perched on the end of his nose he smiles at you all "You're back, and so soon! We're you successful?". He turns and blinks in surprise at Jabari "Erm....I do not believe we have had the pleasure. I am Lyle Venderndt" he says inclining his head in a slight but polite greeting.
Sep 9, 2019 1:31 pm
The darker-skinned man nods in return. "I am called Jabari Na'Hamada. I crossed paths with these two while I, too, was looking into goblin activity in the area. My people say, 'A bird needs two wings to fly.'" He shrugs and flashes a grin. "In this case, it needed three."
Sep 9, 2019 4:16 pm
"There were some complications, a member taking a head injury during an ambush that was helped back by a kind soul, a merchant caravan with lax security and bandits attacking them before that, plus the Goblins in hidesight I should have considdered would be armed better then standard militia or garrison due to numbers alone with proper equipment. But too soon? Well you requesting scouting and assassination if possibly not fully subjugation, if that was the context we'd have need more people and supplies for a long campaign. But for what you requested She's dead. Plus we have a bit of information about things if it's worth something possible. Trace rumors of the cadre for this whole affair. The Goblin Matriach wasn't playing leading everything solo in this affair." Pomin admits with a shrug, "Also why the increased security?"
Sep 13, 2019 12:34 pm
Lyle nods and smiles at Jabari "Well it is good to meet you Jabari" before he turns and listens to Pomin looking increasingly concerned as the gnome relays the details of what happened. "Yes, well I merely assumed it would take longer to deal with the threat. It's certainly not a bad thing you are back so soon I can assure you. We can go through other matters shortly but you say the goblin leader, this matriarch is no more? I assume you....you have proof?" at the end he seems to be somewhat reluctant to see whatever 'proof' you have brought of the deed.
OOC:
Just as a point there were guards on the doors here the last time you visited but as you would assume that as you were with Lyle they just let you straight through
Sep 13, 2019 11:03 pm
Khurza pays Lyle's reluctance no mind, placing the bag containing what remains of their quarry. "Of course we do."
Sep 14, 2019 12:55 am
Jabari winces. "And I do beg you to take it off our hands. Goblins are smelly enough when they're alive."
Sep 16, 2019 1:19 am
"The sagging face shows the traces needed to verify, older goblin, female, trinkets and piercings denote magic user." Pomin offers up.
Sep 23, 2019 12:52 pm
Lyle visibly pales as they peek into the bag "Well....yes...that...that seems in order. Captain, would you mind" as he speaks the guard who escorted you in steps forwards and takes the bag before quickly exiting the room. Lyle smiles "Now, onto your payment. If you give me a few moments I well get the 450 Shields drawn up for you. Now that matters are concluded if you have any of those vouchers remaining I can make arrangements to get that swapped into cash for you all as well."
Sep 23, 2019 1:10 pm
Pomoin hands over the remaining of the voucher not used. "Thank you good Sir, is there any need to investigate into the collaborators with the Goblin Matriach, no one tribe of goblins would be this well equipped I think without outside connection possibly mercantile. We ended up stopping some bandits that were going to ransack a merchant caravan on the way into town on our way to the forests as well. Unsure if that would be related or what happened to the bandits we left with the caravan to bring to town for justice."
OOC:
I'm forgot if there was anything from the Catfolk bandit encounter but I figure we should check on that. My apologies was at a wedding this weekend. Got to see family from the Carribean, so much dancing, my knees are at -10 to stairs.
Sep 25, 2019 9:36 am
Lyle looks a little uncomfortable and shakes his head "I'm afraid that magistrate Ethanath is just interested in being able to report to the council that this threat has been dealt with swiftly. Without definitive proof of someone else's involvement then I do not think he would be willing for any further investigations into the matter. As for the caravan you say you encountered I'm afraid I am not familiar with any one having brought any bandits in but such matters are normally handled directly by the lower courts in town" he gestures to one of several stacks of papers in the room "doubtless I will have a report of it in here somewhere unless the individual in question is still awaiting a trial."
OOC:
Just a quick recap for how you left things after the caravan attack. From the Catfolk you got the following:

Catfolk had 6 daggers (3 each) that appear to have been coated with some sort of poison. In their supplies you find several large sacks, 2 weeks of rations, a couple of waterskins, and 3 stoppered clay flasks, 2 of which hold a thick, viscous liquid that smells sharp and unpleasant and another that contains a thiner liquid that doesn't seem to smell of much but make you a little lightheaded from taking a sniff

You weren't able to work out what any of the liquids were but the 'thick, viscous liquid that smells sharp and unpleasant' that was is two of the flasks seems to be what they were coating their weapons with so is probably a poison of some sort.

The caravan leader Darlene said to look her up when you got back to Dawnsmoor as she may have something for you as a reward for defending the caravan, she was also brining the remaining catfolk back here to face the authorities. Due to threats on a roll she wasn't as best pleased with you as she would have otherwise been when you parted ways.
Sep 25, 2019 2:01 pm
"Well it is what it is I guess, we'll look into our pay, you must be busy. Let us know if you have another other jobs if we've done a satisfactory job." Pomin comments with a nod and a sigh. If the magistrate wanted to just get rid of the goblins now since they were the leering issue that makes sense but goblins were goblins and it might be a matter of time before another leader emerged with even more goblins under their command. Pomin frowns a bit in retrospect and finished up before going to find the Caravan leader with the others.

Once out of the building Pomin would ask the others.
"Well was there anything any of you needed to get done today? After I check on the Caravan's outcome I guess we can look for work or minions for someone's soon to be mercenary army..."
Sep 25, 2019 2:03 pm
OOC:
What's the take for this job? Jabari could use to do a bit of shopping, although I'm happy to that "off screen."
Sep 25, 2019 4:38 pm
OOC:
450 to the party plus the leftovers from the voucher I believe.
Sep 25, 2019 7:57 pm
"I've a hammer to sell, and could use someone with a sharp tongue to help me with this...venture." Khurza says with the meager amount of subtly she possesses.
Sep 26, 2019 1:58 am
"Ah! There's the challenge. The trick is think about it from the hammer's point of view. Who does it want to be sold to?" Jabari seems very serious. "We shall find it the home it seeks, Khurza."
Sep 27, 2019 11:27 am
"If we're selling in on the high end legal market we should find out if they've had a shipment stolen first... I'd hate to have to deal with an attack of legal proportions today..." Pomin admits.
Sep 27, 2019 1:03 pm
"The Gnome makes a good point. There may be a rich buyer somewhere willing to pay a reward."
Sep 27, 2019 5:07 pm
Khurza hesitates to speak and has to consider Jabari's words, not because she's mulling her options, but because they clearly see weapons in a different light. The home... it seeks? It's just a hammer, I don't recall them having such desires. Odd.

Deciding not to press the matter, Khurza nods along with everyone's current line of thinking. "Agreed. Time for some shopping."
Sep 30, 2019 3:05 pm
Pomin nods and leads the way looking into the best place to make the transaction without getting in a sticky wicket with a few inquiries.

After a couple of hours of discrete enquiries you manage to find an orc merchant who agrees to purchase the warhammer from you. A bit of back and forth later and you walk away 600 silver shields better off.
OOC:
Any ideas what you want to do with your advantages on that?

OOC:
It was Remnant's roll, so his to decide.
Oct 3, 2019 3:14 pm

Hmm it's 2 Adv I guess the stock boon or perks on the deal I guess. 2 success net the +10% net profit so I guess an okay roll.

For selling things you want to be looking to page 83 of the core rulebook, 1 x Success get's you 25% of the value of the item, 2 is 50% and 3 is 75% so with your roll you got 50% of what the 'list value' of the Warhammer.

I guess we established a report with Freddy the Fence?

So what are your next steps then? Are you all going to track down Darlene and see whats comes of that or are you going in a different direction?
Oct 9, 2019 2:03 pm
OOC:
I was curious if people needed to buy things ICly and then going to shop for said items then checking with Darlene for due diligence if catfolk highwaypeople were related to our gobbi waterway piratering. Why is the message board with quests we pass sparkly and clickable???
Oct 9, 2019 2:22 pm
OOC:
Sorry, I completely forgot you were waiting on us, mcneils5. Jabari does have some shopping to do.
"After those goblins, I could use something a bit more than cured leather between me and various pointy things," Jabari says. "I'm going to try to find some better armor."
OOC:
Rarity 5 for Brigandine, but that lowers to 3 in Dawnsmoor. Assuming 1 boost for assistance from one of the other PCs, and using the Proper Upbringing talent to add an auto-advantage. If neither of those is OK, ignore those aspects.

Looks like 3 Success 3 Advantage (or 1 Advantage if the boost and talent aren't applicable here). Do the 3 successes amount to a reduction in the armor cost?

OOC:
Yeah the boost and Talent are fine. As this is just a roll to find the item then no the successes won't affect the price, if Jabari wanted to haggle then it'd be another roll against the shop keeper but I would be ok with you applying the Advantages from this check against that roll.
After asking around for a short while Jabari finds himself standing out side of an armoursmith's on the edge of the market place. Working inside is a particularly burly orc by the name of Brosch. After outlining what you're after he grunts and nods "Easy enough to sort fer ya. I've done a few similar pieces in the past fer merchants an' the like." he says before you quickly begin to haggle....
OOC:
Base price is 400 shields and a Negotiation check will be against his Negotiation of 2 x Difficulty and 1 x Challenge die. Price will drop or increase by 10% for each success or failure on the check and will top out at 50% difference from the base price either way

We should just become merchants who flip weapons/armor.
Oct 15, 2019 12:17 pm
OOC:
I mean there's got to be merchants who get robbed that want their stuff back. Repo Adventurers for hire is likely a thing someplace... I'll assist in your roll SB
Oct 16, 2019 2:30 pm
Jabari and the blacksmith go back and forth furiously. Claims of the orc having to sell the clothes off his childrens back and Jabari having to trade his own beloved mother seem to crop up as the two bany figures back and forth before they finally settle at a price of 200 shields for the brigandine. The orc shakes their head ruefully before muttering to Jabari with a chuckle "Well, you at least best put a good word in with people about my work...." as he starts to take a few measurements.
OOC:
The armour will be ready in 2 days for Jabari.

Had a bit of a rethink on the purchasing front. For regular items we'll just do it as an appropriate roll (Negotiation, Streetwise, etc) based on the type of thing you are trying to locate and then will handle the price in a similar way to selling stuff (1 x success get's it at list price for the location, 2 x successes get's it at 75%, 3 or more successes get's it at 50%) for now and see how we get on.

I'll leave things until tomorrow to see if there's anything else you want to do before moving onto tracking down Darlene
Oct 16, 2019 7:56 pm
OOC:
Looking at my money with the book in front of me (finally), I have determined...I would also like brigadine armor. I don't think I can really haggle however. This would also mean selling the leather armor, but only after I get the new set first.

Seeing Khurza eyeing the armor as well, "Out of curiousity how much would it cost for a set for a striking Orcish Battle Maiden? Bout the same possibly a discount?"
Oct 16, 2019 9:09 pm
OOC:
Yeah, might be a way to use Jabari's 2 advantages to say this guy will sell Khurza the same armor for the same price if that works with the GM. Jabari wants to buy a few other random things (some healing items, some rope, etc.). I'll roll Rarity for those in a jiffy.
Oct 21, 2019 7:19 am
The blacksmith gives Pomin a hard look before chuckling "Your a chancer aren't ya? I suppose it'll be easier doing two at once than separately. You lot better sing my praises if any one asks....oh, and a pint wouldn't go amiss" he says before gesturing for Kurza to come over to be measured up.
OOC:
Using the other advantages for that is fine. Going to close this out and will move onto you tracking Darlane down in a bit
Oct 21, 2019 11:55 am
"Oh I can definitely sing some praises of your work... while we're at it maybe we should spend more money here too..." Pomin states smiling impishly.
Oct 21, 2019 2:20 pm
After Khurza is measured, Jabari heads a bit deeper into the commercial sector of the city. "I could use a few other things before we get into any more trouble--especially some healing elixirs. Shouldn't be too hard to find..."
OOC:
1 success, 3 advantage with Proper Upbringing. That means found it for book price, I believe? 3 Advantage maybe means the shopkeeper has enough in stock for the three of us (if Pomin and Khurza want to buy some elixirs).

"...Thank you, Pomin." Khurza isn't entirely sure how to properly thank Pomin for his help in nabbing a deal, settling for gently patting him on the shoulder. She grins slightly, showing some of her teeth. It's obvious she isn't used to the interaction.
OOC:
I have 1 elixer still, but one more couldn't hurt.
Oct 21, 2019 8:20 pm
Jabari buys a lantern, some rope, and trail rations for ten days. From the elixir vendor, he buys three health elixirs ("Better than anything that goblin witch had, I wager!") and an immunity elixir ("Sounds like some Catfolk are using poison. Don't want to deal with that!"). The total expenditure is 250 crowns with 200 more for the armor.

Negotiation for instrument (Rarity 2 after reduction)

2 Success, 1 Advantage, 2 Failure

Total: 1 Advantage

OOC:
Ok, Rarity 4 would be for an instrument that is capable of being used as a Magic Implement, if it's just a regular set of pan pipes that Pomin is after then I'd say base rarity would probably be 0 and as such not need a roll. Cost would be 10 shields as it's a very simple instrument.

OOC:
I guess I should probably look for something for a bard so a magical one. Well maybe we find out they're fresh out of stock.XD

Whilst you find a number of merchants selling normal instruments you have trouble locating anyone selling something of sufficient quality to use with Verse. A couple of them suggest trying back in a week or two as they sometimes get stuff like that coming in but for now you're out of luck.
OOC:
You can bank the Advantage to gain a Boost die the next time you try to find an instrument that can be used as a Magical Implement within Dawnsmoor but you'll not be able to make another check for at least a week.
As you move round the merchants ward gathering the supplies you need you ask around for Darlane. A number of merchants give you directions to where she normally stays when she is in the city, an inn called the Wayward Wanderer down on the Docks. In short order you find yourself in front of it, it is set far enough back from the river front to avoid the more rowdy trade and looks to be a quite clean and well run establishment. As you enter the common room you can see a handful of patrons being served but otherwise the place seems pretty quiet. An older human woman, her red hair showing signs of grey, is working behind the bar giving instructions to some of the other staff but other than a glance in your direction as you enter she doesn't seem to pay you much mind.
Oct 29, 2019 11:58 am
"Greetings we are looking for the Merchant Darlane to see how she fared having arrived in Dawnsmoor safely after the incident on the road. Is she in or do you know her where abouts?" Pomin acquires with a smile.
Oct 29, 2019 1:45 pm
As Pomin greets the worker, Jabari scans the room. "So prim," he says to Khurza. "Not used to all this quiet."
Oct 30, 2019 4:45 pm
"No?" Khurza doesn't take her gaze from scanning the room for anything that might be a problem, or an asset. "I've grown terribly used to the silence, except for that damned bird. Doesn't matter now."
Nov 1, 2019 10:33 am
The woman looks at you for a moment seeming to be deciding how to respond "Who's asking?" she says before you hear a familiar voice come from the opposite end of the room "It's ok Jania, these are friends of mine....well, most of them are". You turn and see Darlane emerging from a private side room with a slightly surprised looking smile on her face "I thought I heard some familiar voices. Come join me won't you" she says as she heads back into the room.

Whilst Pomin does not pick up on anything unusual Khurza and Jabari note that as Darlane greet you all a number of the people that they previously assumed were patrons seem to relax somewhat and surreptitiously remove their hands from the hilts of weapons.

As you all enter the room she closes the door behind you and gestures for you all to take a seat before settling into one herself. "Good to see you two again" she says to Pomin and Khurza before addressing you all more generally "To be honest I wasn't expecting to see you this soon given what you said you were looking into. What brings you to my door then?"
Nov 4, 2019 8:28 pm
"Well you said to look you up because of the favor we did you. Hopefully you got your guards back on the up and up and nothing else happened. Also I'm a bit curious if you've heard of a fellow that denizens refer to as 'Long Beard', that deals in more shady trade, disrupting trade routes, or possibly try and rob and kill merchants such as yourself."
Nov 11, 2019 10:56 pm
Darlane is quiet and looks at Pomin for a long few moments before responding "Aye, I did say that and I do have something set to one side for you but things have been a little.....tense here since I got back". She runs a hand through her hair and leans forwards "Can't say the name rings any bells, could be any number of shady sorts here abouts, I can ask about though but you should probably know what else has occurred since we got back to the city. Once we arrived I pretty much handed our feline friend over to the watch here and filed a report on what had happened. I figured that would be best and they'd meet a swift end once the magistrates here were done with them but things didn't go down that way.". She pauses again, trying to collect her thoughts "I put the matter out of my mind for the moment, I had business to attend to and my crew were itching for a bit of downtime. Next thing I know Ruben, one of my guards got killed in a bar fight. Again I didn't think too much of it, it sucks but things like that do happen. The next night though another one of mine were killed in an alleged mugging. Things were starting to stink at that point so I managed to get a look at the body, for someone that had just been mugged they looked like they'd been fairly thoroughly worked over which made me think someone was trying to get something out of them. Whilst I was looking into that a....friend in the watch passed a message onto me that the catfolk had been released the same day I handed them over. Apparently someone they know has quite deep pockets." she sighs and leans back "Since then I've kept my crew holed up here, where we can watch each others backs.". As she finishes speaking she looks to each of you waiting to see your responses.
Nov 12, 2019 4:07 am
"Forgive me, Madam, if this is a stupid question, but I'm not from around here." Jabari smiles, then leans in. "Are we sure someone paid to get these Catfolk out of jail? Maybe they were released by a kinsman? My people are very family-oriented."
Nov 12, 2019 8:10 am
Darlane just grins slightly "Well I asked around after I heard they'd been released and I was told by the watch sergeant, not the one who was on duty when I handed the catfolk in, that they didn't know what I was talking about. So I assume someone paid a few people off to get them out"
Nov 12, 2019 2:46 pm
"Well your company or you oddly enough seem to be targeted for a reason. Specifically not just as a random merchant. Granted we may want to look into others that have recently died in similar professions... Well you've no doubt been on a knife's edge literally as well as your employees... Since we're free from the Lord's mission are you in need of our employee? Either to fill in as guards or possibly to suss out your feline assassin duo again?" Pomin deduces before giving off an impish smile stroking his chin at the possible smell of further employment.
Nov 15, 2019 2:21 pm
Darlane thinks for a moment before nodding "I think the only way to be sure what the furry bastard is after is to find him so if you're up for it then tracking him down seems to be the best bet. How much for you all to track him down and get some answers? If you're not wanting to be involved in putting the screws on him then just bring him to me and I'll see what I can get out of him"
Nov 15, 2019 4:18 pm
"Yeah I'm not good at torture... we could shave em head to toe before we start talking... " Pomin admits before looking to the others.

"Anyone up for kidnapping killers?"
Nov 15, 2019 6:39 pm
Jabari strokes his chin for a moment, regarding Darlane. "Yes, I think we're up to the task. Honestly, Madam, I'm not from your realms and don't know your coin. How much do you think is fair for such a job?"

I'll take it up to 600 shields if you manage to shake any info out of them before you come back to me" she glances at Pomin with a slight grin "in the event that you have a change of heart on that front". She leans back and takes a sip of her wine whilst you consider the offer.

Darlane smiles and nods and raises her drink in a toast "Good hunting" she says as you leave. As walk through the tap room of the Wayward Wanderer you're acutely aware of the 'patrons' eyes on you all.
OOC:
So whats the plan then? Where are you heading first? Locations of interest from what Darlane told you:

The gaol where the catfolk was being held and presumably released from
The bar Ruben was killed in
The area that Maris was in when she was 'mugged'
There is also the 'friend' that passed the information about the catfolk being released onto Darlane

If you want anything clarifying about the above (or anything else) just shout out and we can assume you asked Darlane for details before you leave the meeting

"Well since they were officially 'released' I'm sure investigating into if they were working in concert with the Goblin Matron for the Lord of the City unofficially is a nice cover and a bit on the nose as well. Finding out they were gone would lead to us asking who signed them out and who was on shift if there's no paper trail I figure, being a bit cheeky and a bit blunt might work in cutting through the paperwork I guess. Blatantly asking if someone was released that may be involved with economical terrorism and pulling money out of the City and Nobles might make most guards nervous if they're lead to believe their name would be mentioned in reporting it. To the Gaol to see where he was to sniff out things to start should work."
Nov 27, 2019 9:26 pm
Khurza looks on as Pomin explains his theory, her face a mixture of confusion and determination to understand him. "...Your mouth, the words flow from it like a river. I will show you how to get someone to talk with but a sentence, to the gaol.
Dec 2, 2019 1:10 pm
You proceed across town to the imposing building of the city court house. Darlane told you that the gaol is located within the same building. Dec 2, 2019 2:39 pm
Pomin goes with the traffic and enters from the side entrance.
Dec 2, 2019 4:07 pm
"Who should do the talking?" Jabari says, taking in the massive structure, eyes wide. "I wasn't around when these Catfolk tried to kill you, but I've grown used to dealing with the law since I came to your lands."
OOC:
Jabari is our best Charmer, and any setbacks he'd get on Charm here would be most likely wiped out by his Knack for It talent. But he wasn't present during the attack, so it's kind of meta-gamey to have him do the talking.
Dec 2, 2019 5:45 pm
"If we don't have to really sweet talk around things I should do okay. If it takes a strong arm Lady Khurza picking someone up by the neck and slapping them into the face until they talk would honestly work quite well also."
Dec 2, 2019 6:24 pm
Jabari nods. "Following your lead." He looks up, up, up at Khurza, meeting her gaze. "And yours."
Dec 2, 2019 9:31 pm
"I will try not to grab them by the neck, unless it is necessary. These communities react violently to negotiations."
Dec 9, 2019 2:04 pm
As you enter the building you find yourselves in a large brightly lit entrance chamber with a high ceiling. A balcony rings the room with two sets of stairs lead up to the upper floor. Dark wooden beams crisscross the ceiling in an almost intricate pattern seeming to curve almost organically round the few skylights that are illuminating the chamber. A number of individuals are milling about the chamber, as newcomers enter various junior clerks are directing them to the officials who can assist them and you soon find yourself stood in front of the desk of a more senior looking dwarf with a close trimmed slightly greying beard. "Yes, what do you need? Something about a prisoner was it?" the dwarf addresses you all in general in a very clipped tone.
Dec 9, 2019 2:40 pm
"Yes Master Dwarf that is indeed the case, it's in reference to a job assigned by the City Lord. We're curious into why they're not here and under what grounds were they released and to who?" Pomin states before saying in a lower tone. "I mean this individual is in league with a group attempting economical terrorist acts on Dawnsmoor trade routes, openly attacking caravans, even civilian women and children as possible witnesses, surely letting them go free was to find out their benefactor's identity before the Dawnsmoor's civil state doesn't lead to chaos and rioting, well played by the City Guard I must say, such an act will be mention in the future report to the City Lord on the Insight and Control of the City Guard. So what are you privy to tell us about your investigation or should we meet up someplace more covert?" he states knowingly with a look of respect on his face as he nods.
OOC:
Yeah I know that's a lot of half truths and bull but hey they might read between the lines and realize the prisoner not being here is a bad thing for them if it's reported in a certain way that paints negligence and/or incompetence. Let me know if a roll is required.
Dec 10, 2019 1:57 pm
The dwarf stares at Pomin as expressionless as stone before giving themselves a slight shake and making a huffing kind of noise "Well, all that seems very impressive and I'm sure it's keeping you quite busy but some details about this individual would be somewhat useful in getting you some information. Reciting the details of every criminal we have ever held would be somewhat tiresome" he maintains his focus on Pomin and waits for the details.
Dec 10, 2019 3:06 pm
"Male Cat-folk brought in by a merchant madam named Darlane." Pomin states adding in a description of the person and a time frame of when they probably got put in confinement.
Dec 13, 2019 11:40 pm
The dwarf grunts in what you assume is satisfaction at the details Pomin has given him before turning to a set of shelves and pulling out a thick looking tome. Returning to the desk with it he opens it and quickly flicks through the pages until he settles on one and begins to study the entries. After a few moments he frowns before looking up at you all with an annoyed expression "I'm afraid you are mistaken, there was no one matching that description confined to the city gaol during the days you have mentioned"

Seems like there are a couple of different approaches here that you could focus on so I'll let you pick how you want to try and resolve this:

If you are wanting to just snag the documents before he can stash them make an Average Skullduggery test with a boost for catching him by surprise and a setback due to his hand being on them already

If you're just wanting to Bluff him into just letting go so you can grab them then it would be a Hard Deception check upgraded once (so 2 x Difficulty and 1 x Challenge dice)

Khurza manages to keep pace with the guard as they flee but doesn't gain much ground. The path slightly opens up in front of the guard and they manage to surge forwards into a side corridor. As Khurza follows there is a crash and several angry shouts. She enters the corridor and sees the way ahead partially blocked by the contents of a book case that has been hastily pulled over and the guard, just on the other side of the obstruction, seems to have stumbled a tad in there attempts to block your passage.
OOC:
Ok, he's still at Short range to Khurza but Medium range to everyone else. They picked up the boost die to this rounds check from their result last round and I am using all 5 Advantages to upgrade the Difficulty of tests to pursue them once (so up to 1 x Difficulty and 1 x Challenge dice) due to the impromptu road block.

I'll go with Skullguggery attempt.

Update: Looks like Pomin gets into a slappy fight with the clerk over the book and he just can't lift his death gripe on the book. Maybe with the 4 advantage maybe a higher ranking individual is drawn over due to the altercation that's beneficial to the party?

Jabari looks back over his shoulder and sees the guard and Khurza both disappear around a corner. Turning to the halflings, he asks, "What were you trying to get his help with? And did you get his name, my friends?"
Jan 15, 2020 2:29 pm
Pomin - you manage to get a brief grip on the documents as the dwarf tries to hide them but he has a firm grip and a shocked look "Wait...let got of that" he says raising his voice a touch louder than he maybe should as he snatches the papers away from you and you note a more senior looking clerk glance in your direction and begin walking over....that is until the scream....
Jabari - the halfling catches their breath and looks up at you, the others start clustering round you both seeming to be a mix of wanting to check their companion is ok and curious about you. He looks up and opens his mouth before you rapidly begin to realise you may have made a mistake asking - they appear to have been here to try to sort a land dispute out between them and 'old bludger' who is being a 'right old devil' about their vegetable patch which their granddads uncles wife apparently said they were fine to use some time ago but 'old bludger' has started digging their carrots out (this seems to be the matter of most affront to them) claiming that as they don't pay rent they have no rights to anything grown in the land.....it goes on and on and you are having a hard time following given how quick they are talking until a scream punctuates the air bringing a momentary respite from the deluge...
Khurza - you easily clear the impromptu obstacle and get right on top of the fleeing figure. As you reach out to grab them they curse and spin to face you, pulling a knife as you do. Seeing the bared blade a nearby clerk screams out in alarm.
OOC:
Ok, Initiative please. Khurza will roll with Cool, Jabari and Pomin will roll Vigilance as whilst you knew the chase was happening you weren't taking actions to be actively engaged.

Right Initiative Order is as follows:

PC
PC
NPC
PC

Khurza is engaged with the guard and Pomin and Jabari are at Medium but cannot see the fight currently (will need to move to Short Range to get into the same area within LOS)

2 x PC slots are up...
Jan 17, 2020 2:46 pm
OOC:
Jabari's planning to rally the Halflings to our cause in some way with a Leadership check. I think that can safely be saved for the third PC slot if Khurza and Pomin want to go. However, if Pomin is thinking of continuing to tussle with the desk clerk, Jabari can run to Khurza's aid instead.
Jan 17, 2020 2:58 pm
"First you try and hide evidence, and then pull a weapon on a civilian lady? Khurza box his ears in, if he tries to stab you don't blame me for not being polite and putting and arrow through that fellow's knee! Lord Ethanath is going to be disappointed when he hearsa bout this..." Pomin states venomously looking around for someplace to get a vantage over heads as he pulls his bow.

"He's lucky I'm not tall I would have already pierced both his ears by now if I was..." he mutters to himself looking around exasperated by the turn of events.

The figure lunges out with their knife at Khurza but aren't able to breach her defences. As he does so he backs away towards the nearest exit from the area. Pomin manages to clamber up some shelves to peek through a small window into the adjoining corridor and has a good view of what is happening, they also see he dwarf clerk they were speaking to seems to have regained their composure somewhat and appears to be gesticulating wildly in your direction whilst trying to convince the other, more senor looking clerk of something.
OOC:
The 'Guard' is at short range to Khurza and still Medium range to Pomin and Jabari. Anything in particular that Khurza would like to use the Threat for?

Jabari brings his face closer to the chittering halflings. "Scatter, my friends! We can't let this guard escape if we want to get your permit sorted. Cover the exits so we know where he goes. But don't confront him!" The man then runs down the hallway toward where the commotion is taking place.
OOC:
Leadership check to get them to be our eyes and ears in case he gets away. Assuming a group of 5 or fewer halflings and using the difficulty-by-group-size rules from the CRB. Jabari has Knack for It and the fine clock, which knock off up to 3 setbacks. Added a boost for having caught the halfling earlier. If any of this is wrong, please feel free to add/subtract dice as necessary.

A Move manevuer after that.

That's 3 Successes and 1 Advantage, assuming the roll stands. If so, I'll also draw my sword for 2 strain, using the 1 advantage to recover 1 of those back.

Khurza scoops up the knife as Pomins arrow clips the guards side and pins their cloak to the floor. The momentary lull is broken as the people in the court house erupt into panic. "She's got a knife!", "They're attacking the guards!", "Someone get the watch!" are some of the shouts you hear as most people start trying to shove and push their way out of the building. Whilst the panic is unfortunate the sudden evacuation does make moving about and seeing what is happening a tad easier.

The 'guard' bends over, seeming to grip at their side before growling at Khurza "That's ok, I've got another" their hand whipping out from their side and slashing another knife out at the orc.

"You're all so stupid!" Khurza is quite frankly, dumbfounded this man has a second knife, even more so when he stabs her a second time. It didn't hurt her physically, but the psychological damage has shortened her temper considerably. "Now you've made me angry!"

Not about to get attacked a third time Khurza stabs him in the arm with his former knife, causing him to naturally drop it in pain. She grabs this one too. "Stay down, now!"
OOC:

The guard stares at Jabari for a moment, before shaking their head "Arrest them all" he shouts to the other guards moving into the city hall and points at Jabari "Hands where I can see them"

Khurza delivers a wicked blow to the 'guards' throat and they stagger back dropping the knife, as she scoops it up she sees another 3 guards moving in around her with weapons draw. "Drop the blades!" one shouts, the command half a question as they definitely seem unsure of themselves.

Pomin see's all this happening and also sees two guard heading in his direction, no weapons drawn just yet but they begin calling for him to drop his bow.
OOC:
Are you all complying or not with the guards?
Feb 12, 2020 2:41 pm
Pomin looks to the others and the situation that has played out. "If this desk clerk and that guard aren't being arrested as well you have a bigger problem then us complying. Or would you like to state some flippant reasoning in front of the City Lord why the people he's entrusted to look into a delicate matter of murders and economic well being of Dawnsmoor are arrested while the people related possibly to these matters escape and skip town and deaths in the town you guard in are dying daily continues? We both know he's a busy man. So Venderndt might have to handle another report today on the matter or we wait and have some tea. It's not our fault a guard that's corrupt panics when he can't run and opts to try and kill a lady, very badly at that." Pomin chides from his position wagging a finger with an arrow in it, "Unlike our current target we're not here to kill you and pull a knife and flail about, the Lord wants truth and answers. Now not later."

"Now let's talk about this in a civil manner with all parties involved please. It's what we tried to do before evidence was attempted to be hidden badly, or escaping badly before threats of maiming and dropping knives. Also he should apologize to the people he ran over." Pomin attempts to counter.

The lead guard approaching Pomin frowns for a moment but then their face hardens again "Drop your weapons and get down from there now. We can have a 'civil chat' once we've got you and your friends in hand".

The guards with Khurza and Jabari are still all shouting for you to drop your weapons and surrender yourselves. The 'guard' that Khurza was fighting is being held by two guards, not roughly but they are definitely not going anywhere for the moment.
Feb 26, 2020 2:30 pm
"Well this seems doable." Pomin states and pounds down slinging his bow with a nod. He'll move for the book and eye the dwarf though, "You're going to tell them about your investigations right?"

"I'm Pomin by the way Mr Poofy Feather Hat. We'll try and be civil as the situation allows."
Feb 26, 2020 5:32 pm
"Fine." Khurza drops both her knives, complying with these entirely ridiculous demands. I hate this 'civilized' place.
Feb 26, 2020 5:38 pm
Jabari puts both hands up. "What is the meaning of this? Your guard literally threw a Halfling at me. The poor bloke ought to be right outside. You can ask him."
OOC:
Jabari never drew a weapon.
Feb 28, 2020 2:58 pm
The guard who appears to be in charge simply shakes his head at Jabari "I don't know what happened here but I mean to get to the bottom of things. Once I'm satisfied I know the right of things then I'll decide how to proceed". He waves another guard over and gives them instructions to take you all, the 'guard' included, below for questioning. You all find yourselves hustled into a room in the cellar of the courthouse, not quite a cell but with only one way in or out, the 'guard' is led off to another room. You see the guard commander talking with the senior clerk quietly as you are being led down. The dwarf clerk is also led into another one of the rooms although his protests are a tad more vocal that any of the rest of you all. You are left for a little while in the room and have a few moments to gather your thoughts....
OOC:
Pomin and Khurza would have had any visible weapons confiscated before being put in the room, if either of you want to resist let me know and we will play it all out. Jabari is not disarmed as they didn't try to use a weapon in the courthouse.
Feb 28, 2020 3:44 pm

"Be sure to question the Halflings outside!" Jabari says as the guard leaves. Then to Khurza and Pomin, "It's a madhouse here. No wonder the Catfolk escaped."
Feb 29, 2020 5:05 am
"This is ridiculous. You chase after a man who flees because of his guilt, and get arrested for the trouble. Some lawkeepers they got. " Khurza looks one step away from crossing her arms and pouting.
OOC:
Khurza would fight to keep her weapons (Jabari got to keep his after all, why shouldn't she ;) )
Mar 3, 2020 12:30 pm
OOC:
If Khurza is going to refuse to disarm (before starting a fight) then can you make me a Hard Coercion check with 1 x Boost die because everyone saw how well you handled yourself in the fight so they don't want to mess with you if they can avoid matters. I would include a setback die as it's trying to get them to go against their normal orders but your Knack for It would negate that anyway
Mar 3, 2020 2:45 pm
OOC:
Jabari would suggest that he would keep Khurza calm, so letting her keep her weapons wouldn't be a big deal. That might be worth a boost on her check.

The guard made half a move to take Khurza and Pomins weapons but after seeing her expression mumbles something about not starting any trouble and leaves you all in the room.

You are left to your own devices for maybe a quarter of an hour before the door opens and the more senior looking guard enters and casts an eye over all of you. "So, would you all care to tell me why you all decided it would be appropriate to try attacking one of my men?" their voice carries the weight of someone who expects a certain degree of respect.
Mar 7, 2020 12:59 am
"Well after talking with the clerk, your man bolted through the crowd like a thief when we pursued he then lifted a small person and proceeded to toss them. When that didn't work and this young lady got close he pulled a knife, I warned him slashing g and stabbing at her would not be a good idea. When he opted anyway I pinned him to the wall, he dropped said dagger and she picked it up instead of calming down he opted to pull another knife from his boot which she took away from him as well. This is when he opted to declare she had a knife. It sounds better then she has both of my knives I tried to stab her with after throwing a civilian. We merely wanted to ask and now seems quite related why he may have let go a bandit that has killed several merchant guards in town this week. "
Mar 7, 2020 3:08 am
Jabari smiles in spite of himself. "I never drew as much as a dagger. Still I got a Halfling tossed at me."
