"Oh, so you've agreed ta help then? Cause it doesn' really matter who's right. Y'can confirm yer appointment with the Legate, obviously." He frowns slightly, lowering his voice even more, "I advise -caution- an not ta reveal things overmuch in yer quest ta prove the chivalrous nature of the Empire's officers' soldiers."

He grins at Greta, "What? No plate fer the lead investigator?"

"I don't know about 'reasonable, professional, and well disciplined' but I'm with her" he points his thumb at Zifu.
"I'm here to head north, we're-all-here to head north! Why are we playing inquisitor for a halfling we shared a ride with?? I hate witch burnings as much as the next guy, believe me; I tried to help him out even. But he's arrested now and that's probably for the best if he wants to live. There's a meeting at 12 and that's all I'm focused on right now."
OOC:
sorry, don't mean to make this team up complicated I just think he'd be a grouch about this

"Oh, no. Fuck that guy. He earned this, murderer or not." Ian waves off Doc's response casually. "No, no, no. You wanna go north or d'you wanna get hung up havin' ta play witness for a trial, constantly waitin' on some inquisitor ta haul their ass up here ta make proper determination? Because the fastest way ta get back ta what you want, is ta help me." He gives Doc a sly grin before he looks over to Zifu, "An you -promised- yer services upon request unless they interfered with yer fealty ta yer own king. Well, yer services is bein' requested."

It's subtle, but a look of horror spreads across Doc's face at the prospect of-more-deliberation. There is no way of knowing whether or not it would pan out that way, and Doc was almost certain he was being played right now...but that bureaucracy sounds a lot like a Drathian thing to do.
"...I've had a sudden change of heart." He says flatly

Inwardly wondering if she should have skipped breakfast, Zifu closed her eyes and took a breath to collect herself. "Such requests made by the authority of Drathian command," she said evenly. She looked at Ian and tilted her head to the side. "I find it difficult to believe, Lord Mardelik, that you have the same authority as an Optio or Signifer, so soon after your arrival."

She caught herself, pushing the simmering ire in her eyes down until it drowned in practiced serenity. "No matter. I am sure a simple meeting with Legate Cassius will settle this apparent confusion of responsibilities."

Zifu stood from the bench. "I shall leave you to your breakfast, m'lord, and take the courtesy of scheduling with the Legate on these matters. I'm sure someone will summon you... and your retinue, if it comes to that, prior to the noontime muster or at a time afterward. In the meantime, I bid you well."

Greta, disappointed at not finding more to eat starts thrumming her fingers on the table and sighs.

Greta indeed didn't find anything, but the DM was too stupid to realize the message had been updated.

"Why do we even need an in... investor... gate .. er? " She asks puzzled. "Finn didn’t do it. He got his ass kicked by those weaklings. No way could that little dingus even kill a chicken!" the barbarian declares, satisfied with her own explanation.

"Ah, you would be right in'a world where people're good'n honest an care about the truth." He pauses a beat to give her a small grin, "Lemme know when you find it. Sounds nice."

Zifu took her empty tray as she stepped back from the table, as she understood this was a place where there was no waitstaff. She gave a courteous half-nod to the others and departed, seeking to deposit her tray before leaving the mess hall.

Giving Zifu a wave as she walks off, Greta asks Ian "What’s the plan?" somewhat annoyed at his response to her conclusion.
Sep 14, 2019 3:02 pm
"Now don' pout. I happen ta care' great deal about justice but this is more about findin' the actual murderer than it is provin' Finn innocent. He was'a dick head ta everyone an I'm fairly sure he's gonna try ta break out, like'a moron, an -then- get'imself arrested fer tryin' ta escape prison."

He pauses to let that sink in for a moment, "With that bein' the case the gameplan is ta examine the body. Since it was left out in public that means it was either an accident or meant ta send a message. We need ta eliminate one'a those possibilities." He puts his feet up on the table, "Most effective means would be ta see if their weapons'n armor shows sign'a combat. If their opponent has magic that'can kill they probably had magic ta conceal their presence. Ergo: combat probably means it was an accident."

"Where’s the dead guy then?" Greta asks Ian.

The Wildlander stands up, ready to go look at a dead body for clues.

"Out in'the courtyard. Ready ta go?" He kicks himself off the table and slides back up to his feet. Leaning over he pats Doc on the shoulder. "The sooner we'get started the sooner you'n Greta can get married." He pats him on the shoulder again, "Let's go."

"I can't see how this is anything other than some drunk sellsword doing something stupid.." Doc grumbles, but gets up as well ready to go investigate

As a group: Doc, Ian, and Greta left the mess hall, who were joined by Johann - who had recently been turned away from the courtyard himself. They were all granted passage with Ian being present, and were let into the courtyard.

The immediate impression this courtyard gave was that it absolutely stank. Rot, and char permeated the air. On the right wing of the gargoyle statue - half of a 'body' hung with its ribcage punctured by the wing. The only thing left was a blackened skeleton, that hung onto the wing as if for dear life. The lower half of the body was in the fountain itself, which stained the water black. Above the odd guard or two in the area, two plainly dressed individuals were looking over the body. Their only notable feature were that they were wearing the same styled long drathian coat, with emphasized collars and no sleeves. One had shaggy blonde hair, and the other had very short black hair and a wide frame. A good distance away from the fountain, the legate could be seen. He spotted them as well, and spoke lowly to the individual next to him - Xiao Zifu.
