Part One: The Wormwood - Game Thread

Sep 6, 2019 2:24 am
The first thing you notice, apart from the throbbing of your head, is the rythmic creaking of wood against wood. As your other senses emerge from your grogginess one by one, you slowly realize that the room is gently swaying to and fro.

In the creaking darkness, you can make out the shapes of five other individuals stirring awake with low groans, suggesting that whatever was the source of your pounding headache has caused the other strangers' suffering, as well.

"Oh me head." raising one hand to her head Flora looked around the space about her.
Her eyes adjusting to the darkness she looks at the other people with her.

Her hand instinctively went to her rapier her eyes widening at it's absence.

"Some ones courten death they are." Slowly noticing much of her items were now gone.
Sep 6, 2019 1:34 pm
Menno raises his head and winces. Looking around slowly, to allow his eyes time to adjust, he makes out the forms of the others.

With a grin and a slow shake of his head, Menno makes his presence known. "Alas, it seems that I'm not the only one that ran afoul of the locals."

With a sarcastic laugh Menno looks around at his surroundings.
Sep 6, 2019 1:43 pm
"No, your not. Were on a ship if the feel of things are right. They stole our things and the bastards stole us."

She sat up and winced at the spinning of her head for a moment.
Sep 6, 2019 1:53 pm
Menno laughs despite the pain in his head. "At least they left us our clothes....I'm Menno a simple sailor. Who was at the right tavern at the wrong time."
Sep 6, 2019 2:00 pm
"Flora, and yes. Though I am not in a thankful mood, to whomever did this. We might just have been grabbed as slaves Menno

"I didn't drink that much to be this bad. I think maybe we were drugged or hit from behind."
Sep 6, 2019 2:23 pm
"Holy balls . . ." comes a groggy voice from the opposite end of the room. "What'the hell?" Staggering to his feet is a tall redhead, slender and lithe, holding his head while muttering in a distinct accent. "Oi! Yer inna mess, now!" He sways back and forth before falling to his knees, the swaying of the ship or something else too much for him.
Sep 6, 2019 2:24 pm
"You've been kidnapped maybe enslaved. Same with us. That's Menno, Im Flora."
Sep 6, 2019 2:31 pm
"I don' give'a fuck who ya are!" The young human sigs beleaguredly, before muttering some dark invective under his breath. "Sorry. Name's Ian. Any idea what thick idiot picked the most elaborate assisted suicide plan, ever, an locked us up?"
Sep 6, 2019 2:33 pm
"No came around to me senses just moments before Menno and yerself. Feels like were on a ship. Whoever did this hasn't shown themselves yet."
Sep 6, 2019 2:42 pm
Menno laughs as he listens to the others. "Aye, it definitely seems we were all shanghied. Let me guess you all were at a particular tavern having the time of your life. Then...poof you wake up here. At least mine involved a night with a red haired lass. What happened to bring the rest of you to our current lodgings?"
Sep 6, 2019 3:03 pm
"Cleverest ting they've done so far . . ." Grunting irritably he staggers on over to Flora. He has gentle features, pretty even, his guttural accent and tones do -not- match whatsoever. "No'ffense or nothin' but I hope yer up ta causin' a ruckus when they try ta come fer us."
Sep 6, 2019 3:21 pm
"Yes Menno, I was enjoying me cups and playing darts with some sailors."

Glancing to Ian,"That all depends. We need to see how far out to sea we are or if were dockside. Also how many there are. Im up for a bit of pretending to keep me neck safe. Lets see who took us and what the situation is but dont fear, I aint afraid to tangle."
Sep 6, 2019 3:57 pm
"Aye, that's the right of it. Be patient for a bit and determine what our current situation is. Have no fear though, when it comes time to pick a fight, I'll gladly lead the way."
Sep 6, 2019 4:10 pm
Three other unconscious figures lay on the wooden floor of what appears to be the large, mostly empty cargo hold of a sailing ship that reeks of sweat, rum, and piss. The creaking and swaying continue as you realize that what Flora said is true: your possessions have been taken, leaving you only the clothes on your back.
Sep 6, 2019 4:42 pm
"Well, that's good ta know." His tone of voice suggests otherwise as he goes to search the surrounding area as best he can in the dark for something, anything of use as a weapon.
Sep 6, 2019 5:04 pm
Natsumi can hear the others talking as she slowly returns to consciousness. She rolls to her side and props herself up on one elbow, looking toward the voices of two men and a woman. She is dressed in tight leather pants, high black boots and a billowy white shirt with a revealing cut down the front that is laced haphazardly, holding it loosely together. A sash at her waist serves as a belt. Her hat and the scarf she wore on her head are lying on the floor nearby. She gathers the scarf and hat to her, but doesn't put them on. Her hands move about her body and find that, aside from her hat and clothing, all of her belongings has been confiscated.

She finally tuns toward the others. Amber eyes peer out from under a tangle of auburn hair, her delicate features flashing a weak smile toward her fellow prisoners.

"I have to admit," she says as she stands slowly, stretching sore arms and legs, "this is not the strangest situation I've ever woke up in."

She is slender and beautiful, and she extends a hand demurely toward the closest of the group. "Natsumi," is all she says in introduction. "No word from our captors yet, then?"
Sep 6, 2019 5:07 pm
"They haven't deigned to grace us with their presence Natsumi. Welcome to the land of the awake."
Sep 6, 2019 5:11 pm
Menno stands and makes his way over to Flora and Natsumi. "Give it a few minutes, I'm sure they haven't forgotten about us. I'm Menno."
Sep 6, 2019 5:12 pm
"Ah yes, introductions, Flora."
Sep 6, 2019 5:32 pm
"My name's Tobarrus, in case anyone is curious", the handsome blond man who had so far still been lying unconscious suddenly announces. He gets up, first on all fours, then standing up. Rubbing the back of his head, he looks around and asks: "Is this a ship? I don't remember getting on any ship"
He pauses and thinks for a moment. "I don't even remember getting drunk enough to sign up for a job. I was just strolling by the port..."
Sep 6, 2019 5:41 pm
"Aye mate, that's usually the way it goes. It seems that we all fell prey to same crew at some point. Probably within the last day or so." Menno says as he hears Tobarrus speak.
Sep 6, 2019 5:51 pm
"Tobarrus, seems someone volunteered you without yer consent."
Sep 6, 2019 5:56 pm
"Alright, so which one of yous pissed off some grumpy captain and got us into this mess?", he asks. "Wasn't me. I've just been minding my own business for at least a few days by now
Sep 6, 2019 5:59 pm
"Don't look at me, I was happily spending time with a feisty red haired wench. I step out of the tavern and I remember getting jumped by several people. The next part is pretty obvious."
Sep 6, 2019 6:06 pm
"Alright, shut it. Enough w'the useless chatter. Anyone here'a good'nough sailor ta tell how big this boat is? How big the crew'd hafta be?" There's another pause before his gruff, accented baritone asks, "An see if'n nobody can' find'a lantern or somethin' ta see down here."
Sep 6, 2019 6:16 pm
Menno looks around at the room they are in. Judging what the dimensions are and by how the ship is moving, he hopes to get a rough idea of how big it is and a rough crew count.

Suddenly, the pounding of boots from nearby catches everyone's attention. From a nearby set of stairs leading up appears a tall, cruel-looking man with a close-lipped "smile" that looks physically painful for him to make. In his hand, he carries a whip, its lash coiled up in his fist. Behind him are several more people, their dress betraying their profession. These are pirates, and you deduce that you're aboard their ship. Each carries a sap in their hand, and sneers wickedly as their leader admonishes your group.

Still huddled below deck like children with the sun over the yardarm? Get up on deck, ye filthy swabs, and report for duty before Cap’n Harrigan flays your flesh into sausage skins and has Fishguts fry ye up for breakfast! He releases the lash of the whip and it falls to just brush the floor with its tip. His lips curl into a gruesome rictus revealing a mouthful of rotten, gold-capped teeth.

"Well that answers that question." Menno whispers as he turns and prepares to leave their former prison.
Sep 6, 2019 7:13 pm
Tobarrus frowns and looks at his small group of companions. They look strong but he doubts they could take on their kidnappers, especially unarmed.
"Alright", he says, making a step towards the whip-wielding fellow with the unpleasant smile. "Show me what to do and I'll do it. Not like I have anything better to do"

Getting on deck sounds like the best plan right now anyway. He can get a view on the situation, establish whether they are still near the land or not and maybe even find out if Shavla had the brains to follow him when he was abducted.
Sep 6, 2019 7:42 pm
"Besmara's broadsides ye could have asked."

Flora heads topside to see and learn more of her predicament.
Sep 6, 2019 8:22 pm
A low growl escapes Ian's throat as he stalks towards the ramp. His red hair billows around him slightly as he heads towards top deck with he others. His indigo eyes flare with defiance as he goes along with the others.
Sep 6, 2019 11:30 pm
Press ganged, thought Natsumi to herself as she tied the scarf around her head. She climbed the steps up and out of the hold and took a deep breath of sea air before pushing her hat down onto her head. She looked around the ship some, but focusesd most of her attention on the man with the whip and his armed muscle.

She made a mock curtsy at the man with the whip, pretending to hold the imaginary hem of a dress she wasn’t wearing, amber eyes appraising the crewmen, looking for valuables, weapons, or anything she could take surreptitiously.
Sep 6, 2019 11:49 pm
Jix comes awake to hear the pirates words. She is quick to her feat although did wobble a bit. Doesn't take a moment to see what she is wearing and everyone to figure what just happened. Wordlessly she makes for the deck with everyone else.
Sep 8, 2019 12:28 am
The scowling pirate with the whip marches you up the stairs. You pass one other deck before emerging into the fresh air mixed with the tang of salt and a gentle sea breeze. You note that far in the distance there is the hazy outline of what you think could be land, but you recognize quickly that the ship you're on is sailing in the open waters.

The deck is full of more pirates, all clustered together, looking to the stern of the ship. Above the main deck stands a large, bald man with an eye patch and long beard bound with gold rings. Next to him is a younger balding man with a long, black ponytail. He sneers as he taps a well-worn cat-o'-nine-tails in his hand.

The pirate who brought your group onto the upper deck herds you into the middle of the ship, where you notice four other "recruits". Judging by their clean clothes and nervous expressions, they too were pressed into service aboard this vessel.

The large man waits for the newcomers to get into place before addressing everyone in a loud, booming voice. Glad you could join us at last! Welcome to the Wormwood! My thanks for "volunteering" to join my crew. I’m Barnabas Harrigan. That’s Captain Barnabas Harrigan to you, not that you’ll ever need to address me. I have only one rule—don’t speak to me. I like talk, but I don’t like your talk. Follow that rule and we’ll all get along fine.

The churlish captain paces about the deck as he speaks. You notice the ornate ship's wheel mounted in front of him. Toward the back of the deck is a cage with a decaying body inside. A large parrot is perched on it, twisting its head about in a morbidly comic way. The captain continues, Oh, and one more thing. Even with you new recruits, we’re still short-handed, and I aim to keep what crew I have. There’ll be a keelhaulin’ for anyone caught killin’ anyone. With that, he looks at the man beside him and says, Mr. Plugg! If you’d be so kind as to make pirates out of these landlubbers, it’ll save me having to put them in the sweatbox for a year and a day before I make pies out of ’em. With that, the captain walks away, leaving you to the dour Mr. Plugg.

From his perch on the poop deck, Mr. Plugg shouts down to the 10 of you who are new. Alright, ye stinkin' landlubbers, ye heard th' cap'n! He stalks down the steps to the main deck and stands in front of your group. He is nearly six feet tall. The crown of his head is bald, and what remains is pulled back tightly into a greasy black ponytail that easily reaches the middle of his back. He gestures with a wicked-looking cat-o'-nine-tails to emphasize his points as he speaks to you, making every intent to intimidate and threaten. He peers at your group through slitted eyelids, his pupils glittering with hatred.

We'll be havin' a wee test o' skill first thing. See the crow's nest yonder? He points at a narrow platform high above the main deck. A net of massive ropes connects it to the decks below. He stares at those of you in the front row with a twisted grin, poking each of your chests with his cat. You're going to climb up there an' whoever makes it th' fastest is my new rigger, savvy?

As you all complete the test, Mr. Plugg shouts to Menno, You! Yeah, th' beanpole! Go with the fancy jacket over there. Th' two o' ye be our newest riggers! He points to a dandy-looking gnome wearing an eye patch who's examining his fingernails and seems rather disinterested in this whole proceeding. The gnome suddenly realizes that Plugg is talking about him, and does his best to stand at attention. Standing about three-and-a-half feet tall, he wears a frilly shirt that's streaked with grime and has a pair of loud purple trousers on. His greasy dark hair is thick and curly, with a close-cropped beard that looks as if it's strapping his chin in place. Tucked in his fine leather belt with a dull brass buckle is a large hat the same color as his outrageous trousers.

Turning back to the remaining five of your group, the gruff first mate continues, Now, which o' you lot can cook? He cocks an eyebrow and points his cat-o'-nine-tails at you as he waits for you to respond.

Scowling at your comments, Mister Plugg's eyes flit to one of you who has not spoken. You! Landlubbin' treehuggin' scalawag! I can smell yer type on the sea breeze! He stares directly at Tobarrus, a cruel grin on his face. You're a cook's mate now. Get down to the galley an' tell ol' Fishguts I sent ye. He points his cat toward the stairs you came up from the ship's hold.

His eyes narrow even further as he scans the rest of your group. The rest o' ye are swabs. Report to Master Scourge. He turns on his heel and walks away, back up to the poop deck and doesn't look back. Suddenly, a whip cracks in front of your faces, and your captor from earlier stalks toward you. Alright, worms, get to work! Swabs, follow me.

As everyone disperses, the other new recruits follow Scourge. The gnome next to Menno frowns when he attempts to introduce himself. Look, friend, just because we're working together doesn't mean I have to like you. Just keep your head down and don't cause trouble for me.

The other new swabs include a female halfling with a scowl on her face, a human female who has an almost serene expression, and a rough looking human male with a kerchief tied around his bald head.

As you spend your day on the decks of the impressive pirate ship, you notice a huge clock hanging from the main mast. The copper-and-bronze mechanism glints in the sun, swaying with the motion of the ship. Immediately below it are manacles bolted into the mast. They're mounted on sliding tracks, currently placed at about the height of Master Scourge.

As the sun sinks lower in the sky, Master Scourge and Mr. Plugg stalk around the deck, hurling insults at crew members, administering punishment to the unfortunate crew. Suddenly, the clock emits a bellowing, melancholy sound that you might consider a whistle of some kind, just as the sun disappears below the horizon. As the ship's lanterns are lit for the night, Mr. Plugg appears standing on the foredeck, tying a rope around a sad-looking man's waist. His hands are bound and a bandana covers his face. From the poop deck near the ship's wheel, the captain bellows, Alright, ye scurvy dogs! Th' bloody hour be at hand! Jakes Magpie committed the crime of thievery and is t' be keelhauled! Several members of the crew around you cheer and shout things like, "Keelhaul th' thief!" and "Feed 'im t' th' fishes!" Mr. Plugg, execute th' sentence! Mr. Plugg walks the man to the edge of the ship and without warning, plants his boot in the middle of the blindfolded man's back, knocking him over the railing. The rope around the man's waist goes taut, and Mr. Plugg grabs it in his gloved hands, jerking it roughly. As he pulls on the rope, hideous screams are heard from Magpie below. Mr. Plugg repeats this process at least ten more times, raking Jakes Magpie's body against the barnacled hull of the ship's keel, until the screaming stops. He hoists the disgraced pirate back onto the foredeck and kicks the body of Jakes Magpie with his boot, a vicious looking smile on his face. The thief's punished, cap'n! The other pirates cheer as Mr. Plugg rejoins you on the main deck.

Soon after, Fishguts Kroop and the one from your group called Tobarrus start serving up turtle stew with a lump of hardtack in it. Surprisingly, it's very delicious and filling. Kroop passes out small tin cups full of rum. Everyone standing around you drinks it immediately and hands the cup back to Kroop. He urges you to do the same, whispering that you'll be punished if you don't, and stands there until the cup is empty. The drink is strong and you can tell it may have lingering effects.

After the rum's passed around, the other pirates break off into groups, laughing and carousing, gambling, or sleeping. Most stay on the upper decks, enjoying the relatively calm evening. Dawn comes early enough, and after all, they've made it through another day without keelhauling. Such is your life now, whether by choice or not, a pirate of The Shackles!

Menno downs his cup of rum and watches the proceedings with mixed expressions. Looking over at Conchobhar and whispers "Us new guys need to stick together. It seems to be the only way to ensure survival."

As everyone breaks up and goes about their nightly business, Menno walks around and watches the various groups. Seeing the human female from the other group of new arrivals, Menno nods his head in a polite greeting. "I'm Menno, a fellow new recruit. You seem to be taking our current situation in good spirits. What's the secret for your success?"

Jix is rather exhausted from her duties. She gladly partakes in ceremonial hello beverage. Anything that lessens her aches is fine. She isn't a stranger to stronger drinks. She eats meager meal with much gusto. During the night she will try to attract in a pet rat if she can. Always good to have a friend. Seems there is an infinite supply of them around. She did have her eye on larger one that she spotted, but looks like this night may have failed. Being a Ratfolk, she tends to like rats and knows how they think.

She has kept mostly to herself during this first day doing her chores and night to rest. Appears she might not be too comfy with strangers and there are plenty here. Life of a Ratfolk. Usually best not seen or heard. It also appears that she isn't stranger to ships.

Although Natsumi was tired from the long day, she ate heartily and knocked the rum back without a second thought. Once everyone was asleep, she explored the ship stealthily, possibly making a new friend, and then returned to bed. She managed to get some small amount of sleep before the morning.
Sep 18, 2019 8:45 pm
After a long night of revelry or respite, depending on how your first day on board went, you wake to the baleful droning whistle of the ship's clock. The sun is streaming in the portholes of the lower deck. You see that most of the sailors have already left this level of the ship, but a small group seems to be up to no good. Two human females, a human male, and a half-orc male seem to be watching the new crew, then laughing and sneering as they loiter about.

One female is wearing a black kerchief. Wisps of greasy auburn hair poke out from underneath it, and her teeth are quite rotten. The other woman has large ears that stick out from her head and blond hair pinned in a bun. Both women are extremely loud and raucous. The human male is fat and bald, and stands shifting from foot to foot, as if it's a nervous tick. The half-orc is quieter than the others, but his eyes are filled with malice. A single tusk juts out from his lower lip. You also happen to notice that they stand between you and the only obvious exit.

Today, Fishguts just orders Tobarrus to help him with cooking. Tobarrus isn't known for being a great chef - hunting, like on the previous day, suits his talents better - but the cook gives him easy to follow instructions and he manages fairly well. While working, he tries to get some smalltalk going with the cook, trying to get on the fat man's good side. If he's going to have to work together closely with the man for now, his life will be much easier if the man doesn't hate his guts.

During the night, he will join some crew members for a night of gambling. He doesn't really have anything that he could bet but he's mostly trying to get to know the other pirates. He probably wouldn't have a chance to actually win anything anyway. Rumors say, pirates like to cheat and Tobarrus doubts he would be able to catch them in the act unless they are very clumsy about it.

She stalks toward Flora and jabs her violently in the chest with her finger. Our workin's t' be beatin' yer fetchin' head in, love. The silent half-orc appears behind her right shoulder, while the woman with the blond bun gets to the side of Flora. Jix rushes forward and attempts to rake the pirate with the blond bun. Her swipes miss as the woman cackles, Oh, cheeky ratface, are we? You'll git yours soon enough! By the stairs, in a blur of motion, Menno's limbs strike the big half-orc who lets out a groan of pain and staggers momentarily. Ian approaches the filthy pirate and attempts to knock out her teeth with his fist, but swings wide and misses.

Tobarrus steps forward as if inspired by Ian's effort and smacks the blond-bunned sailor square in the nose. She spits a gout of blood at the new cook's mate before backing up to the fat pirate by the stairs, beady eyes keen on preventing any other blows. The half-orc pushes past Menno and trips up the stairs, eyes bulging with fear. He cries out in anguish, and you realize from the muffled sound of it that the poor wretch is mute.

The pirate with the black kerchief yelps with anger and aims to punch Flora in the kidney. The cleric dodges the blow expertly, narrowly missing what would've been a painful blow. The fat pirate kicks a foot out toward Natsumi, but doesn't connect with the agile kitsune. Flora breaks through the blond pirate's defense and scores a hit with one of her vicious claws. Staring at Flora, the pirate's eyes sparkle with hatred as bloody spittle flies from her large mouth. Mark me words, filthy whore, I'll slit yer throat in yer sleep!, she screeches.

Natsumi jabs the blond pirate in the back with a quick punch. She stands there drooling and croaks out, laughing, Aretta, I's seein' stars in th' daytime. Her laugh turns into a phlegmy cough and she hocks her bright red saliva onto the deck. She looks as if she's about to pass out.

Meanwhile, a couple of other pirates appear to be peeking down from the stairwell, eager to watch the fight.

Tobarrus assists Flora, punching the woman with the black kerchief in the stomach. Yarrrrrrr!, the pirate shouts as she lunges at the cook's mate, aiming to punch him in the chest, but misses. The fat man takes a swing at Menno, but the wiry rigger is too fast. He easily moves out of the way of the pirate's sluggish blow.
