Chapter 2: Birdsong in Hollow Valley

Feng looks for some roots which can serve as makeshift torches, hoping it will calm down some of the more...vocal members of their group.

"If we die from starvation, I shall offer no peace to anyone." She grumbles, clearly unhappy with this dank dark place.

Every piece of wood here is damp, moldy, rotten. Wouldn't do for torches.

Mimi looks about in a panic, and doesn't see any obvious exits. Perhaps if you searched more thoroughly among the rubble, tangled roots, or the submerged floor, you might find something useful.

What do you do?

OOC:
Doesn't Iko have Light cast on his blade? And Wei has exploration equipment, so 'assuming' he's still with us, Feng can light a torch or two.
Wu Meng considered the situation carefully. "If it's a former burial crypt there should be a way to open in from this side as well. Interesting there are no tombs here. Perhaps something else was kept here." With whatever light they had he began to inspect the alcoves.

Mimi will also help to explore the place, and more importantly, to find a way to escape. As she does so, she hugs onto Orengi for comfort.
OOC:
Oh, that's a critical fail. What happens with a failed Discern Realities?

Yes, Iko has Light cast on his blade. And yes, you can get torches from Wei's adventuring gear.

Mark 1 XP, Mimi.

Orengi whimpers, shivering, and licks Mimi's hand. The fox curls up miserably in a corner and refuses to move. Mimi has to carry him -- a difficult proposition, as Mimi's leg is still hurting.

Searching the alcoves, Meng finds only scraps of rusted metal, a bit of carved bone, a small jade button. The back of one of the alcoves is split by a great crack where twisted roots burst through long ago. The roots and vines creak and groan, as if they are moving, seeking... something. But it's just your mind playing tricks. Perhaps there are other spots here where the architecture has given way, exposing earth that can be dug through? You don't know if this is the lowest level of the crypt either; if there are other levels, there may be other exits.

What do you do?

Kalam looks around as well. Then he grabs at the roots that are poking through the wall. Giving a sharp tug with one hand and keeping his blade out against the root, intending to cut it out if he has to.

OOC:
Kalam, these are big roots, some thicker than a man's arm. Roll+STR to see just how much damage you can do with your dagger.

Wu Meng next turned his attention to the submerged floor. He stepped carefully around the crypt, trying to see if the entire floor felt or sounded the same. Perhaps the exit led below.

OOC:
Roll Discern Realities, Meng.
Nov 18, 2019 9:09 am
As is always the case when Meng went about his investigating, he drew upon his inner ki to help him get his bearings.
OOC:
Using my last ki point for the day to take +1 forward to my next Spout Lore / Discern Realities move.

Edit, my 3 questions:
What should I be on the lookout for?
What here is useful or valuable to me?
What here is not what it appears to be?

When Meng stops sloshing about and peers closely at the water, he realizes it all flows ever so slowly towards one particular spot. Clearing away the mud, and slime, and the bed of rotting roots underneath he finds what looks like a square manhole cover. He and Wei heave it aside, and the water spills down the slippery stone stairwell that is revealed.

Kalam gives the root shove, it not moving easily leads him to abandon his actions. He looks over at Meng and Wei as they pull up the grate. "Sounds like you two found something interesting." he walks over and peers down the stairs.
Nov 19, 2019 6:02 am
Mimi struggles over with Orengi in her arms to look at the hole. "This needs to be the way out. I don't feel right going deeper and deeper..."
Nov 19, 2019 11:33 am
"A manhole cover. This means sewers underneath the crypt. We have no choice but to follow it. If it is sewers, it should lead up to various other locations." Wu Meng began to proceed down the stairs.
Nov 20, 2019 2:28 am
"Its odd to have a sewer system running below the crypt.
Unless it was part of a bigger structure or in a city proper.
A stand alone crypt usually is air tight. To avoid the flooding we've seen."
he says as he fallows Meng down .
Nov 20, 2019 3:14 am
"Building a crypt above a sewer? Now that is odd indeed." Feng follows along, trying to keep her bare feet away from anything nasty.
Nov 20, 2019 5:47 am
"Yes, very strange construction." Meng mused as well.
Nov 20, 2019 8:33 am
Mimi will obviously follow after. She carefully descends the stairs while carrying Orengi, and making sure her footing is not slippery.
Nov 20, 2019 3:05 pm
Iko shrugs, following the rest down as there seemed to be no other option.
Nov 22, 2019 8:14 pm
Iko, unlike everyone else here, you are in your element. You know that the crypt's most important occupant -- whether that occupant was someone to be protected or contained -- is bound to be somewhere below. The eight in the first chamber would have been the guards. The next chamber, with the alcoves, would have housed objects of power, or at least, importance, and most likely would have each belonged to the eight guardians. What lies below? Great wisdom, or great evil?

The group descends stone stairs slippery with scum and all but worn smooth by water trickling down it for centuries. Another waterlogged chamber. This time, you judge the flooding would come up to your necks if you descend into it. In the middle of the chamber, hovering above the water, is a ghost.
