The next morning, you are roused from sleep bright and early by Hee-Chul, the slug-man who runs the Twelve Lanterns. Breakfast is brought up to you at the Guildmaster's suite: Smoked fish congee, steamed pork and cabbage dumplings, dry noodles dressed with a light soy broth, and jian bing, crepes filled with scallions, cilantro, sweet soybean paste, and chili sauce.

Rong Hua is feeling much better is still ill. The strange sickness is gone still afflicts her, and the memory of Atekhramun's choking green incense and the horrible insect swarm will haunt her for a while yet. Hee-Chul promises to look after her here at the inn. The Guild can get her the best physicians, but Iko fears the disease is magical in nature, and may require magical healing.

What to do with Atekhramun's treasure? You have split the money among you. Did you take the silks as well? Although Feng laid claim to one of the scrolls, she realizes she can't make any sense of the magical scribblings. It's discovered that only Iko among you can read the scrolls and potentially work their magic.

Zhang Wei, you remember that you still have the black stone ring you found. What do you do with it?

What to do next?

There's the matter of returning Mei to Shen Xin at the Cripped Crane.

Is today the day you foray into the wilderness with Sikeo to find samples of Yellow Zombie Mold for the apothecary Yao Fei to study?

Sungyeol comes by with news of another death at the docks caused by the monster Tamchim has enlisted you to hunt down. The elven archer thanks Iko again for tending to his brother, Dae-Won, when he was wounded in the alley. It may be another day or two before the swordsman is recovered enough to see action again.

No doubt, The man who hired Wu Meng and Rong Hua to steal the scroll from the Guong Estate will be wanting an update, as well.

What do you do?
Sep 9, 2019 6:22 pm
Feng eats her breakfast with pleasure, enjoying the relaxing decadence while it is available. There is still the matter of planning what to do next, and so she pitches her ideas.

"It seems we have a full schedule people. I would argue the mold samples and this mysterious beast are our top priority, but tell me Meng: this employer of yours, are the the patient sort?"
Sep 9, 2019 10:49 pm
Iko eats breakfast with Feng, though he seems far more preoccupied with the scrolls he is reading at the same time. Though even with his attention divided, he puts his thoughts in on the matter.

"I would prioritize the beast over all else. I would prefer no one else dies while we hunt down a mold that likely isn't going anywhere or do business with a patron of thieves..." he looks quickly to Rong Hua. "..no offense."
Sep 10, 2019 8:24 am
"Our employer by now will have heard of the raid on the Guong estate, and also the more disturbing news that Lady Guong was assassinated. I suspect an attempt to frame Rong Hua and myself for the murder. The scroll we were asked to recover is now in the hangs of the Changgok. Our employer is someone from the Quian. In order words, betrayal is afoot. When we report back, it is likely we will get entangled further. However, a commitment is a commitment. I agreed to retrieve the scroll, and will have to do so at some point, whether before or after we deal with the monster." Meng summarised thoughtfully.

"As for Mei, while I do not condone slavery, she rightly belongs to Shen Xin. We must at least detour to deliver her, but we needn't stay after that." Wu Meng did not reveal that he had given a share of his gold to the slave girl, for her to use wisely, and perhaps even buy her own freedom.

Finally, Meng had his own private matter regarding Rao's flute, but this was not the time to act on it yet.
Sep 11, 2019 1:45 pm
"The beast has so far always struck at night," Sungyeol points out, "and I wouldn't recommend rooting about in the woods after sundown. So maybe see to the latter this morning, and the former in the evening? I can go get Sikeo for you if you decide to do it that way."
Sep 11, 2019 1:53 pm
Wu Meng nodded. "If everyone finds this plan acceptable, let us return Mei to Shen Xin first, and then proceed to search for beast."
Sep 11, 2019 5:04 pm
"If you think that is best, so be it."
Sep 11, 2019 5:07 pm
Iko nods, rolling up the scrolls and stowing them in his robe. "Very well."
Sep 11, 2019 9:06 pm
Wei sits there feeling relaxed and in good spirits. Enjoying the moment and the company, he indulges in a hefty breakfast. Listening to the suggestions of his friends, Wei gives his opinion.

"I agree, this escaped animal should be our next goal. It would save innocent lives as well as earn us our host's gratitude."
Sep 11, 2019 10:32 pm
OOC:
How would I go about learning anything about the ring?
Sep 12, 2019 3:26 am
Wei
How indeed? Whenever you touch or look at the ring, you feel a strong urge to wear it. Do you put it on? Show it to your companions? Consult a local magician? Discard or sell it? What do you do?
Sep 15, 2019 10:45 am
"Does the beast appear in the daytime? If so, we can hunt it right after dropping Mei off. If not we'll have to wait till nightfall."
Sep 15, 2019 1:01 pm
Sungyeol shrugs. "No one has reported seeing it, by day or by night, but the attacks happen at night, and the wounds are consistent with the beast's description. That's what I've been told. I've never seen the beast, nor any of the bodies."

Obviously, Sungyeol only has his facts through orders he was given. You've no idea if he's even aware of Jimseung's involvement.
Sep 16, 2019 2:35 am
"I suppose we'll just have to check their stomping grounds for ourselves, seeing as we are without anymore intel."
Sep 16, 2019 11:06 pm
Iko scratches his chin for a moment. "So we have until nightfall to waylay the beast... or we could hunt it then. In the meantime, we could use our daytime to accomplish other tasks." His head sways from side to side, mulling things over. "Many of these tasks do not require all of our numbers... in fact, I am sure that some of our separate employers would not take kindly to all of us being privy to the details of our jobs... perhaps we should split, making sure we reconvene before tonight's hunt?" he suggests.

Sep 17, 2019 12:43 pm
Iko's eyes widen as he looks to Zhang Wei. In a moment, he is out of his seat and heading towards him. "Wei? WEI! Take it off!" He reaches for the ring to remove it for him if he is unable or unwilling to.
Sep 18, 2019 12:01 am
OOC:
Can Wei take it off, or should I roll something?
Sep 18, 2019 11:58 am
Wei:
You easily slide the ring off. But when you blink, the ring is no longer in your hand, but back on your finger! Laughter echoes in your head,

"Can't get rid of us that easily, boy! In fact, unless you play your cards right, you're stuck with us forever. And we do mean forever - when you die you're joining us in here! But don't worry, we'll try not to let you die."

Iko:
You can sense the spirits in the ring, but only Wei can hear their voices. The ring doesn't budge when you attempt to take it from Wei.

When Iko tries to take the ring, the spirits speak to Wei again,
"Your friend can't have us, boy. Unless you put the ring on his finger yourself."

Wei & Iko, what do you do?
Sep 18, 2019 12:22 pm
Iko looks genuinely alarmed, not a comforting feature on his usually serene face. "What's happening, Wei? Is someone speaking to you through the ring?"
Sep 18, 2019 5:10 pm
By now this spectacle has stolen Feng's attention from her nearly finished food. It's never a good thing when Iko loses his composure, especially now that she notices Wei has excused himself to examine a strange ring. "Wei, what did you do?"
Sep 19, 2019 9:50 pm
With an almost child like expression Wei shakes his head. "Nothing...much."

Taking the ring off of his finger, Wei hands it over to Iko. "Here you can talk to the spirits"

"No one should be speaking with the spirits." He says, attempting to simply take the ring without putting it on.
Sep 20, 2019 12:32 am
Iko finds his hand empty. Bewildered, both men find the ring back on Wei's finger.

The voices echo in Wei's head, "We told you, you must put the ring on his finger. But don't do it, we don't like The Downtrodden! And we don't like your other friend, either. She's got her own angry spirit. No, we like you. If you promise to keep us, we'll tell you a valuable secret right now."
Sep 20, 2019 4:44 pm
"Wei, you have to be more specific." At this point Feng has gotten on her feet to see what all the fuss is about, quite curious at this talk of spirits.
Sep 20, 2019 5:24 pm
Wei slowly relaxes as he hears the plea from the spirit. Motioning for Iko to wait, Wei tries to communicate with the spirit. *Okay, if your secret is worth it, I'll keep you.*
Sep 20, 2019 6:36 pm
"Someone in this room has a hidden past that intertwines with yours, son of Zhang." the spirits chortle.

"Hmmm...someone's about to knock on your door. Two someones! One of them is known to you. The other knows the disciple of the Mountain."

At that, the spirits fall silent, and there is indeed a knock at the door.

Sep 21, 2019 7:29 am
Wu Meng was distracted on the other side of the room, checking on Mei's well-being, but came closer again on hearing all this talk about Wei's ring and spirits.
Sep 22, 2019 6:24 am
Mimi:
How do you feel being in the city - this city, in particular? How is Orengi coping? The botanist, Sikeo, said something in passing to you when you signed the members' log downstairs...something odd about foraging for fungus in the woods. But that's not what you came for. Another scrap of news seems more relevant to your mission: it seems the possessed woman you've come to seek out is here, and has been contracted to hunt down a killer beast. You know of Jimseung, of course - the trapper who captures exotic creatures and sells them on the black market. Taking that despicable man down would be a happy bonus!

Kalam:
How many years has it been since you last saw Wu Meng, when you faced him on Guangming Peak? What went through your mind when you heard about the murderous treachery that later occurred there? How about when Shifu Qian sent you here? How do you feel now, knowing that Wu Meng is behind this door?
Sep 22, 2019 8:13 am
When Mimi first came to the city, the sights, sounds, and general busyness surprised her and made her anxious, especially Orengi. She spent her time in the borders first, to study the ways of the people. It was during this time that she met with Zhang Wei. After that, she grew more accustomed with wandering in the city, being careful of possible thieves, con man, or perverts that might approach her. She and Orengi stick close to each other all the while, with Mimi reassuring Orengi while he keeps an eye out for her surroundings.

In general, she learns to be wary of the people and their vices in the city after spending weeks in the new country.

It's been five years since our match. I went back into training after.
I felt it was a betrayal of everything we were taught and that the culprit needed to be stopped but Shifu Qian's instructions were to meet Wu Meng and to be sure he and what he carried were kept safe.
I wasn't surprised that Shifu Qian sent me, given the history, but I was surprised that he sent me to be a protector and not to seek justice.
I feel like seeing a lost brother again after so long, awkward but happy. Though he doesn't really show it in his face.
Sep 23, 2019 2:18 pm
"Who might be looking for us?" Meng wondered. As the others were wrapped up over the matter of the ring, the monk reached for the door and opened it.

Kalam Makhir! Disciple of the Sky! Wu Meng's face displayed both genuine surprise and pleasure at seeing a fellow disciple, albeit one following the precepts of another one of the Eight Masters. He grasped Kalam's hand and arm in a gesture of warm friendship. "What brings you here?" Noticing the warrior woman beside him, "Forgive me, greetings to my lady. Please, both of you, come in."

Curiosity gets the better of Wei as he listens to the spirit. Who's past is intertwined with mine?

As there is indeed a knock on the door, Wei turns to Iko and motions that he's okay. "I'm fine, the spirits say they can help with my situation. If it ever becomes problematic, I'll take the ring off and we can get rid of it."
Sep 23, 2019 2:44 pm
Iko looks to the door as it opens, then back to Wei. "This conversation is not over. If there is a problem, you tell me immediately." he warns.
Sep 23, 2019 4:49 pm
"Wu Meng, you are a hard man to find lately." There is a grin on Kalam's face. "It's good to see you brother." He returns the arm shake while bowing his head slightly. "It's been a number of years. Last I saw you was on Guangming Peak."
Kalam's face sombers "We've heard of what befell Shifu Gen. I am sorry brother." Kalam bows his head again, in respect for the fallen master.

Mimi nonchalantly nodded in thanks to Wu Meng as she enters the room. She sheepishly looks around the place, pretending to not be paying attention to the patrons as she quickly scans their faces. A fox wanders in with her, walking against her legs.

The inn caters to the Explorer's Guild, and so is accustomed to animal companions and other wild types. The Guildmaster himself normally keeps a couple of mastiffs in his suite, but they are not here at the moment.

Mimi and Wei recognize each other.
Sep 24, 2019 2:31 am
A look of pain and sadness crossed the monk's usual serene countenance. "I am the last disciple of the mountain." He said poignantly. "I seek to uncover the truth behind the betrayal." Realising that his self-reflective tone made him an inconsiderate host, his mood recovered outwardly. "But come, sit down, tell me why you're here, more so, why you've left your sanctuary. To look for me?"
Sep 24, 2019 3:39 am
He looks puzzled by the words Wu has said. "Let us have tea and polite conversation. So all may be made clear." Kalam takes his sandals off at the door, then follows Wu into the room towards a table. Kalam waits patiently for the tea to be poured before talking again. "Shifu Qian and I made our way back to Guangming Peak once we learned of Shifu Gen's death. As you know, the sky palace may go anywhere but it does take some time." he takes a sip of tea before continuing. "Shifu Qian was making inquiries about what happened. Though we knew not where you had gone. He sent me to find you. He said, you and what he hope you carried, were of great importance. If you are the last disciple of Shifu Gen, you are the last mountain, and Shifu Qian was right." he takes another sip of tea, he seems in deep thought as he sets his cup politely down. "What happened to Shifu Gen?"
Sep 24, 2019 3:43 am
Hearing the seriousness in Iko's voice causes her to drop the subject, figuring this who spirit business is beyond her. Ironic. She turns her attention Wu Meng, lazily walking toward the duo he obviously knows.

"Friends of yours Meng?" She asks casually, eyeing them up momentarily.

Kalam politely gets up and bows towards the newcomer at the table. "I am Kalam Makhir, second disciple to Shifu Qian, master of Sky style of martial arts. May I inquire as to who you are?"
Sep 24, 2019 5:00 am
"Forgive my manners." Meng remembered to make the necessary introductions. "My companions are Xian Feng, Iko and Zhang Wei. We have fought together to stop a dangerous foe recently, and are about to embark on another this morning." He then turned. "This is Kalam Makhir. Both Kalam and myself hail from the Eightfold Way, Kalam observes the Way of the Sky, and myself the Way of the Mountain. We have not seen each other for years, permit us to catch up quickly, before we set off on our duties for today."

Turning back to Kalam, "Li Xiong, former disciple of Shifu Gen, betrayed our master and our sect. Allying with unknown assailants, he slew my master and possibly all my fellow disciples. The last thing entrusted to me is this scroll." Meng withdrew a plain scroll case from within his robes. "I understand this to contain part of a sutra my master was working on with Shifu Zhen, and your Shifu. If you have just come from Guangming Peak you would have found our monastery razed, and thus know the rest of the story."
Sep 24, 2019 7:14 am
Mimi looks at the woman in the group. "Hope you don't mind me asking, but you are Xian Feng, right? I am trying to study about spirits, and I have heard about your... situation. I hope you don't mind if I stick around with your group as I also heard you are hunting a beast, and I can offer my service as a forest ranger..." She then realises why one of the names that Wu Meng mentioned sounds familiar. "Ah! Zhang Wei, is that you? Oh my god, it's been a while since we last saw each other! I'm Mimi, the one who lead you through the forest that time!"

"Welcome Mimi, I am Wu Meng. Any friend of Zhang Wei is a friend of mine."
Sep 24, 2019 3:47 pm
Kalam bows slightly to Mimi, "Excuse my manners earlier. I was excited to see my old friend. Mimi, I am Kalam Makhir. It is nice to meet you." Kalam looks at Wu, "Let's continue this another time. Seems we have a job to do, from what I have gathered."
Sep 25, 2019 12:51 am
Wei breaks into a smile as he sees Mimi. "Mimi, it is indeed good to see you. How have you fared since we parted company?"
Sep 25, 2019 5:33 am
"Yes, well met Mimi. There are many...misconceptions about my situation." Feng does not elaborate on the matter, seemingly lost in her thoughts as she reflects on some of the closer encounters she had with individuals looking into her situation. Admittedly she seems far less violent. "And well met to you too Kalam Makhir, it seems our numbers grow by the day."
Sep 25, 2019 6:10 am
"I know Kalam here to be a master of the blade. If he joins us, we stand in good stead in our next quest." Wu Meng was unfamiliar with the search for the beast, and let the others who knew what was to be done explain it.
Sep 25, 2019 7:29 am
"I have gotten used to the new land fairly well! I am brave enough to venture into the cities now, but this "money" thing is not easy for me to get. Though I swear I haven't tried stealing anything! Only things people look like they have discarded..."

Mimi then turns back to Feng. "Oh? Then what might the truth be? You have... another spirit in you right?" She asks nervously.
Sep 25, 2019 6:21 pm
Wu, your praise of my skill embarrasses me. I am but a student of the Sky. Still with much to learn. He finishes his tea, I'll do what I can to aid you though.
Sep 25, 2019 8:12 pm
RoAries says:
Mimi then turns back to Feng. "Oh? Then what might the truth be? You have... another spirit in you right?" She asks nervously.
"Oh absolutely, my apologies for any confusion." Feng pours herself some tea and sips it delicately. "What I mean is some people believe me to be a victim because of my spirit, or occasionally a prize. Most think I'm possessed, which is only true sometimes, if that makes any sense. I've met exorcists, people who scream in terror upon recognition, oh and several cultists tried to convince me they could help my situation, until it became apparent 'helping' involved killing me to take the spirit for themselves in some strange ritual." Feng discusses her misadventures with hardly a care in the world.
Sep 26, 2019 4:17 am
"Oh! I'm sorry if I might seem like another trouble to you, but I promise I won't be trying to hurt you, or the spirit. I'll just be observing how it works, and investigating its nature. Perhaps you can also tell me what you know of what, or who, this spirit is."

A spirit...scientist? Odd. Feng scratches her head, admittedly a bit bewildered by Kuroi's request. "There is little of use I can tell you: only that they are very angry at whoever left them to burn alive, to the point where their soul refused to die and instead chose to inhabit my body. I can talk with them through ash, smoke, and fire. But their answers are nothing but rage and hate, and they're only interested in vengeance or the downfall of evil men. Perhaps that is fair given their situation."

Kalam pours himself another cup of tea and listens with interest.
Sep 26, 2019 12:06 pm
Meng also hadn't seen Feng interacting with their spirit up close, and paid close attention.
Sep 26, 2019 1:04 pm
Iko watches the conversation from the other side of the room where he had been speaking with Wei. Kalam seemed nice, and if he was anything like Wu Meng, they would be lucky to have another as disciplined on the team. Kuroi concerned and intrigued him. Her knowledge and curiosity of Xian Feng's spirit sent up red flags within his mind, but it seemed to stop at that. On the other hand, having someone along with more than a passing knowledge of the world of spirits could provide interesting conversation.

Speaking of spirits, Iko would be keeping a close eye on Wei for the time being... a very close eye.
Sep 27, 2019 3:49 am
"Ah, a vengeful spirit... Hmm, not completely what I'm looking for, but its a good start. I'm a failed nature druid, what do I know about spirits..." Mimi mutters to herself. "Oh, sorry. I mean that's an unfortunate circumstance for you, but I'll still like to tag along as not only your spirit might still have a link to what I'm looking for, but a friend I met is also with you guys!" Mimi waves to Zhang Wei.
Sep 27, 2019 2:50 pm
Wei smiles and waves back at Mimi. *Fair enough ancient ones, you were right about our guests. Yet how does this relationship of ours work..exactly?*
Sep 30, 2019 3:05 pm
The spirits hiss in Wei's ear. "We answer your questions when we feel like it. We'll never lie, and we'll try to keep you alive. In return, you answer our questions. Starting with this: do you really trust them? These newcomers? The Guild? Your friends? Your precious woman lying there in an unnatural sleep? Yourself?"
Sep 30, 2019 3:06 pm
As Wei thinks this over, there's another knock at the door. It's the inkeep, Hee-Chul.

"The Guildmaster will be using these rooms today, so you'll he to clear out," the slug-man says. "I'll move Rong Hua to a private room where she can be seen to as she recovers."

On the way to the Crippled Crane, Mei thanks you all for rescuing her, and says she is eager to return to Shen Xin. She whispers to Wu Meng that the money he gave her will go towards maybe eventually buying her freedom, but for now she's content where she is.

That done, you all head to the Dragon River ferry dock to hunt the killer beast. You find the ferry service bustling with morning activity - merchants plying their trade, men-at-arms, goods and currency changing hands, local urchins gawking at the outlanders, teamsters keeping a wary eye on their nervous animals. It's organized chaos under the watchful eye of the dockmasters and city guard.

What do you do?

Wu Meng was contemplative of Mei's return to Shen Xin. His internal sense of right and wrong did not judge her for her life choices, nor did he overthink the nature of slavery in Qing'lai. As the great wheel turns, all things have their place and time. That was one of the precepts Meng had learnt from his master. It was not for him to question the grand order of things, but to know unfailingly what the correct action was in any given instance.

"Do we have an indication of which river we are to investigate?" Meng looked towards the companions who had met the Guildmaster yesterday and received his instructions.

OOC reminder for those who were present during the interaction with Tamchim:
Jabes.plays.RPG says:
An overheard argument has put you in between the guildmaster, Tamchim, and the hunter, Jimseung. A deadly creature is loose down by the Dragon River ferry docks. Tamchim wants it quietly destroyed. This may be a problem, as the beast appears to be Jimseung's property.
Of course, reports centered on the Dragon may be attributed to the sheer volume of traffic there. Only fisherfolk ply the Phoenix, and only slaves travel the Tiger.
Oct 1, 2019 5:55 am
"This one." Feng answers, overlooking the sheer amount of traffic on display. "This is a labyrinth in itself, how shall we go about this? Try our luck with the thugs and merchants who will no doubt demand payment for the information, or the patronizing guard who will brush us off? Either way let us make an effort to watch for any mercenaries working for Jimseung, they would be foolish not to retake such a beast."
Oct 1, 2019 6:58 am
Wu Meng closed his eyes to get his own sense of the ebb and flow of the busyness of the Dragon river ferry dock. There was so much going on, but surely there would be some who would be genuinely concerned about the beast.

You're convinced the city guards would be the best people to ask. You spot a likely pair, but it seems your group already has their attention. You're not sure what they could be thinking, but they eye you with what you imagine as suspicion. Has this anything to do with the Guong Estate? Did Zhao Xun sell you out? Or could it be something else? The fight against Atekhramun, perhaps?

What do you do?

"The guards are looking at us." Wu Meng mouthed softly. "It's early morning, let us not act with suspicion. Shall we approach them?"
Oct 1, 2019 5:12 pm
Kalam nods respectfully to passer bys who gawk. "Yes, better to be open and honest with our work with the proper authorities. " Kalam keeps his hands open and at his side as the guards approach. "Good sirs," Kalam bows his head respectfully towards the gaurds. "Might I have a moment of your time?" Kalam inquiries.
Oct 2, 2019 6:34 pm
"Move along. We're--" the barrel-chested one begins, but the lanky officer cuts in, "A moment, and no more. What do you want?"
Oct 2, 2019 11:10 pm
It seemed all the guards in Qing'lai were curt and impatient. Meng stood next to Kalam and let his fellow brother continue.

After several long moments of waiting for Kalam - or anyone - to ask them a question, the officer guard loses his patience. Throwing his hands up in disgust, he spins on his heel, uttering something about 'stupid foreigners."

Suddenly, there is a commotion centered around a fruit farmer's boat. It seems a dead body has been found floating near the north bank about a mile downstream from here. Joining th onlookers, you see the bloated body is of a male human; apparent cause of death is a large puncture wound in the chest, as if from an animal's horn or tusk. The skin has a greenish in cast, as if from poison of some sort. This matches perfectly the sketch of the beast you were shown by the guildmaster. This is the first time a body has been retrieved by the public; up until this point, the Guild has been able to keep this problem a secret. Now, it seems word of the monster's existence is about to spread.

What do you do?

While it's true this man was gored, there is also a puncture wound in the neck through which the poison was delivered. If you could only obtain a sample of the poison, there's a chance Wei's contact, Yao Fei, the apothecary, can create an antidote.

You also find something curious in the man's mouth: a tiny black snail which one would not normally find anywhere near the Dragon River, but is plentiful in the salt marshes where the crab-men live.

Iko barely finishes his examination before the guards begin dispersing the crowd. What do you do? Do you try to obtain a poison sample? How?
Oct 4, 2019 3:02 pm
"Now we know where to start our search." Wu Meng observed along with Iko as he picked out the tiny snail. "The salt marshes. So the beast is poisonous. That will be more life-threatening to us when we confront it."
Oct 4, 2019 3:24 pm
Iko nods. "Unless we can get a sample of the poison to the apothecary, he would likely be able to create an antidote..." Feeling around his robes for some kind of container, Iko sees the guards moving in. Gritting his teeth in frustration, he pulls out his knife to get a sample.

Watching the others as they examine the body, Wei comes up with an idea...."If we can get a sample of the poison, perhaps Yao Fri could help us again. Possibly even tell us what to possibly expect."
Oct 4, 2019 4:18 pm
Mimi slaps him in the shoulder playfully. "Oh you! You scared me for a moment! I though maybe you were suddenly possessed by a spirit or something!"

Mimi watches with confusion at the sudden turn of events that happened. She figured from what her new friends are saying, there is a dead body in the water that has been poisoned by the rumoured beast. Her friends also seem to need the poison for something, and that Iko has gone close to the body to posibly take some of the poison.
Oct 4, 2019 4:25 pm
She sees that he is anxiously looking over his shoulder. Mimi looks around to see what is looking out for, and figured the grumpy uniformed men that are also moving in quickly are what he is afraid of. She decided to help him out, and quickly moved in front of the men to distract them. "Help me! Help me! I'm being attacked by this fox!" Oct 4, 2019 5:19 pm
Mimi sees that Iko has finished what he was doing, but now she has to deal with the scene she has made for herself. She is gonna give one last cry for help before running off from the guards towards the stalls/buildings near the area, and find a spot she can hide at to lose them.

Feng is a bit amused by the combined antics of the party, chuckling slightly. It also keeps her from simply insulting the guard for his brashness.

"I'd rather not fight a poisonous monster without some security."
Oct 4, 2019 8:32 pm
"Lead the way my friend. We need to see Yao Fei." Wei says as he listens to Iko.
Oct 5, 2019 12:32 am
Wu Meng smiled at Mimi's quick thinking. It was showy, but it got the job done. He followed Iko and Wei as they headed to the apothecary.
Oct 5, 2019 2:18 am
You find Yao Fei at his usual spot bent over his workbench. The slug-man apothecary sniffs the specimen you brought him and picks it up with a pair of silver tweezers. He drops the sample into a dish and peers at the tweezers, muttering to himself. It takes a few minutes before he realizes you're still there. "What, you're still here? This could take a while. Come back later."

It's still fairly early in the morning. What do you do now? Continue the hunt without antivenom? Fetch Sikeo and go fungus hunting? Something else entirely?
Oct 5, 2019 9:23 am
"Now that we know we can get an antidote, it seems unwise to proceed without it. I've fulfilled my responsibility in returning Mei, so I am open to the next suggestion you may have." He looked at the others.
Oct 5, 2019 11:24 am
Wei pauses as he thinks about their options. "Perhaps we can go look for the yellow fungus while we wait?"
Oct 5, 2019 5:19 pm
"Yellow fungus? Sure, I can help you guys with looking for that!" Mimi pipes up hoping to continue to be of good use to these people.
Oct 5, 2019 11:33 pm
"I can send for Sikeo if you wish," Yao Fei says, hardly looking at you, "but she looks woods-wise enough."
Oct 5, 2019 11:39 pm
"Thank you." Wu Meng waited patiently for instructions to their next enterprise.
Oct 5, 2019 11:46 pm
Do the six of you head into the woods on your own, or send for Sikeo? By the looks of her, Mimi is a competent forest guide, and Wei can attest to this. Sikeo's advantage is he is a botanist, but it might take a little while to send for him.
Oct 6, 2019 1:56 am
"We can proceed if Mimi will lead the way regarding matters of nature." Once again, the monk was patient and respectful to wait till the others were ready.

He himself took a moment to reflect on a more personal matter. He pulled out the flute that he found the day before, and began to examine it, puzzled as to why Shifu Rao's flute was in the possession of someone else. What could this mean?

He thought about it for a while, and turned to Kalam. "Brother Kalam, what do you know if Shifu Rao and the disciples of the Wind?"

Might Atekhramun's power have come from such a being? Did he somehow steal Shifu Rao's flute, or has something terrible happened at the Sanctuary of the Wind?

Mimi expertly leads the way through the jungle. It's unforgiving terrain, but also eerily beautiful. At one point you come to a valley filled with haunting birdsong. It's as if you've stumbled into another world. Iko, in particular, is inexplicably drawn to the strange glen, and wanders off, eventually losing sight of the group. He is found mere moments later, asleep underneath a peach tree in full bloom despite the late season. When he is roused, he speaks of an encounter with a creature of myth - a beautiful bird with wings of fire, a breast of gold, and emeralds for eyes. Iko swears he and the bird conversed for hours, though to the rest of you he was gone for only a few minutes.

Iko wanders through the strange woodlands, feeling the soft breeze on his skin and listening to the bird's sing their listless melody. A small smile creeps on to his face. There were so many simple joys away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and it pained him that it had been so long since he had gotten to enjoy them. Taking in a deep breath, he could feel a strong connection to the Spirits and the Other Side.
He felt like there was something he was meant to do, that he was in charge of, but for some reason, the serenity of the glen made it seem not so important. He took a moment, finding a soft patch of grass and moss to rest in under the shade of a peach tree. Odd, to find one so beautiful and in bloom at this time of year. His smile widened as he removed his hat and sat down. The bird song grew quieter, but sweeter, more content.
Iko turned his head toward the sound of footsteps, expecting to see one of his companions, coming to share in his serenity, but saw instead a bird of exquisite beauty. It languidly walked toward him, its eyes gleaming with pure emeralds and its feathers burning with ethereal fire. For any mortal man, the sight would have convinced them of their madness, but Iko had seen the Other Side, and the realms of the Spirit Kings. He knew he had slipped into that place, or into a pocket between the two worlds.
The two spoke as if old friends. Iko shared tales of his travels, and the folly of men. The spirit spoke of the sights of its home, and the strange politics of its kin. For hours they conversed, until the sun seemed to be tiring, and heading to its place of rest beyond the horizon. Iko began to rise, speaking of the necessity of returning to his people, and to his mission. The spirit looked at him with sad eyes, reminding him that, no matter what he did, no matter who he convinced of his righteous cause, he would not be able to make his world as beautiful as the Spirit's.
He looked down sadly, and retrieved his hat. When he looked back, the bird was gone, replaced by his companions shaking him awake. "Sorry... I could have sworn it was time to rest..." He says, confused, with his usual sad smile on his face.

Wu Meng moved without too much difficulty in the forest, and as he entered the glen, its rare beauty put him in a contemplative mood, although Iko's strange tale made him cautious again. When he checked himself he found that some of the ginseng tea left to him by his shifu was missing. This troubled him, as he has saved it for a more ceremonial occasion to share and consume.

He closed his eyes, to see if he could get a true sense of the valley.

OOC:

You come to understand that nothing in this ethereal valley is what it seems. This is a place between this world and the spirit realm - the "Other Side," as Iko calls it. This place and its denizens are neither wicked nor benevolent, they simply are. If the group stays here any longer, you may succumb to the lure of this place and never leave!

Your eyes snap open, and you spot movement in the foliage. A diminutive figure, some sort of forest spirit, peers at you curiously from underneath a toadstool, your ginseng packet in its tiny hands. It giggles before disappearing in the underbrush. Nearby, you see a banana-leaf food wrapper - more evidence of the spirits' playful pilfering. You cannot help but laugh. It's so peaceful here... you could just forget about stolen scrolls, and assassins, and slave girls, and killer fungi, and river beasts, and Shifu Gen... all of it.

What do you do?
Oct 9, 2019 12:46 pm
Iko shakes his head as the ginseng thief runs off. "I bet it doesn't even know how to make tea." With a sigh, he looks to his companions, "We need to keep moving. If I was here for hours, and you all found me in a few minutes, we could easily waste too much time here while that beast continues to rampage through the city." While the valley had taken him back to his days of studying the spirits, and the teachings of his order, being with people grounded him, and made him remember his task.
Oct 9, 2019 1:38 pm
Wu Meng found his inner spirit recharged. It was as if the serenity filled him with more life than was possible. He focussed his thoughts once more, as if to project a sense of gratitude towards that which surrounded him, before opening his eyes again, and spotting the little figure who pilfered his sachet.

"Who are you, little one? What is it that you want?" The monk asked out of respect than genuinely expecting an actual answer. He turned to Iko and nodded at the priest's suggestion. "Yes we had best move on."

Feng quite likes this place, finding the vivd colors relaxing her very soul. If the ghost is trying to give her a sign she wouldn't be able to understand, feeling herself slowly slip into a trance while she simply admires the scenery. Even Iko's concerns -something she would normally heed- don't seem all that important at the moment. "Come now Iko, there is no reason to give excuses, we are still on our...mission."
Oct 10, 2019 2:55 am
Kalam looked around, the calm taking him. Not noticing what was happening really. He had never visited the spirit world. He lived his life in the sky but his mind was well grounded, normally. One needed a strict mental discipline to perform his skills and technique. So he was unfamiliar with the spirits but knew of the spirit world from Shifu Qian's teachings, though not it's workings.

Despite the beauty that surrounds him, Wei finds himself thinking to his last conversation with the spirits.

Do you trust them...Yes, I do trust my friends. We've fought side by side in battle. That's how I acquired this ring.

These newcomers?Yes, I've met Mimi previously when I was moving through the forest to get to the city. As for our other new companion, if he's half as honorable as the others then we will be fine.

Kalam looked around drowsily, he sees the forest spirit with the tea packet run into the brush. He lets out a little giggle, finding the act strangely humorous.
"The little one likes your tea Meng."
He then sobers and his brow furrows, "The passage of time is strange here. I can't seem to grasp it, even my own time is altered." he kinda giggles a little again but tries to cover his mouth. Kalam looks to be making an active effort to control himself or something anyway.
Oct 11, 2019 8:17 am
Mimi sees that her new companions are being badly affected by the spiritual energies of the place. "Hey guys, keep it together! Despite this forest being relatively peaceful, it can still be able to pull you fully into the spirit realm! I won't be able to find a way to bring you back if you do. So, I advice having something to focus on keep you from being distracted. Such as the yellow fungus we were meant to look for. Stick close to me, I can't keep watch on you always..." "Get out of here!" the ancients urge Wei, "Wake up, and leave this place!"

Mimi momentarily pierces the veil and sees the valley for what it really is: there is no longer anything alive here. What were once trees are blackened stumps. The very soil is scorched and lifeless. The lush grove you are all seeing is but an illusion -- an echo of the past, perhaps, but an illusion nonetheles.

It seems to take an eternity, but with some effort, you are all able to pull yourselves away, climb out of the enchanted valley, and make your way to the world of the living.

Mimi and Orengi continue to search for the elusive yellow fungus. They find a patch of the common kind that infects ants exactly as Yao Fei described. You take a sample of this, and keep searching. And then, suddenly, next to a rotting log, there it is -- a husk that was once giant cockroach, now overgrown with yellow, branching growths, exactly like the ones you saw in the mumin ghetto.

What do you do?
Oct 11, 2019 10:26 am
"Interesting that we all seemed to pierce the veil in different ways." Wu Meng found in disturbing that while the reality was desolation, the illusion was what charged his inner ki.

He turned to the others who first heard of this task. "What were the properties of this fungus? Were you instructed on how best to safely transport this?"
Oct 11, 2019 12:32 pm
Wei stands there looking at the husk covered in yellow fungus. Still shaken by all the death in the valley, he simply stands there. Thank you ancient ones, your guidance saved my life.
Oct 11, 2019 4:04 pm
That was disturbing... The forest was dead all along... What happened here? Mimi wondered to herself as she led the group out of the illusion. She decides to focus back on the task instead of the troubling revelation.

She nodded to Wu Meng's question. "Yeah, this is the yellow fungus we are looking for. But, are you sure this is what you want? It looks to be a parasite that manipulates insects to their death. Why would you need this dangerous species?" Mimi asks hesitantly.

The moment Feng is brought out of her haze she doesn't say a word about the experience, and any attempt to discuss the matter is met with her ignoring or walking away from the conversation with an embarrassed look on her face. Luckily the conversation moves on without much fuss, and so does Feng.

"Yao Fei wants to study it. We fought roach-men who were infected by a much nastier "strain" of this crap thanks to the Fan clan. We still need to pay them a visit for such a grievance."
Oct 12, 2019 6:37 am
The voices in Wei's head stir at Feng's words.
The Fan? Oho! Anybody named Fan in here? Haha! Hey, watch out for the toad!

You all hear a loud, crunching noise nearby. When you peek through the trees, you see an enormous creature resembling a giant, horned toad, as tall as a man, munching on a fungus-infected cockroach. It doesn't appear to have noticed you. What do you do?

Oct 12, 2019 11:10 am
As you watch, the giant toad fills its lungs with air, then issues an agressive, full-throated call. You hear answering calls in the distance in almost every direction. You could be surrounded in just a few moments! Having called to its fellows, this individual here vomits up its meal and begins to thrash about in the grip of some sort of seizure. It looks like its meal didn't agree with it.

Kalam regains his composure. "Shifu Qian, once told me the time in the spirit world worked differently, but to experience it for myself." he lets out a low whistle. "The power involved was immense, I can manipulate my one time or life force, ki if you want to call it. That left me feeling drunk with the power of it, im not sure what lingering effects i may have. Is that a giant toad over there?" Kalams' daggers are in his hand as soon as he hears the call of the toads. "I'd rather not be the thing to settle this beasts stomach."

The convulsions continue, but begin to subside. The spasms are very much like the roaches in the ghetto before they went crazy. The toad may or may not have noticed you.
Oct 12, 2019 4:50 pm
Iko looks at the fungus, then back at the toad. It likely wouldn't be long until it noticed their presence and attacked.. Feeling around for a container of sorts, he pulls out a potion vial. He cursed inwardly for not being more prepared, but, with no other choice, he makes a mental note to buy some spare containers for such purposes, pops off the vial's cork, and downs the health potion.
Cleaning it out with a bit of his robe, he rushes in to collect a quick sample from the untouched roach before him.
Being very careful not to touch the fungus, he scrapes a decent amount into the vial.

OOC:
Just to be sure I am describing the scene clearly and everyone is on the same page:
• There is a sample right at your feet: the first fungus-infested roach husk.
• Because of the toad, you realized there is more than one dead roach in the area. There might even be more than two.
• The toad called other toads. But then the fungus began to take hold.
• From what you saw in the ghetto, where the man was infected after being attacked, ingestion is not the only mode of infection-- mere contact with the spore-spewing branching growths may very well be enough.

Given all that, I'll let you revise your action if you wish.

Otherwise, that's a Defy Danger. Good luck!

OOC:
Good stuff! And there was absolutely nothing wrong with what you were originally attempting. I was just worried I haven't been describing the scene well enough.
Oct 12, 2019 5:26 pm
Iko, you now have a specimen for Yao Fei to study.

Mimi, you know that giant toads congregate around food. Their sticky tongue can grab a man, and their large mouths can swallow a person whole!

Other toads draw near from all directions. What do you do?
Oct 12, 2019 6:20 pm
"We're running yes? No reason to stick around." Feng takes a defensive stance, one foot already moving back.
Oct 12, 2019 6:21 pm
Stowing the sample in his robe, Iko says, "Yes, that is the plan." He tuns back the same way they came provided everyone else does.
Oct 12, 2019 6:43 pm
Wei listens to the noise the to add are making. We have what we came for. There's no need to pick a fight. Least of all one where we're about to be surrounded. Let us go check in with Yao Fei.
OOC:
Wei will be last in line that way he can protect the others from the to add chasing them.
Oct 12, 2019 9:03 pm
"Yes in this case I believe running would be the best option." Kalam glances around at the party. "Mimi, would you be so kind as to lead the retreat?"
Oct 13, 2019 2:43 am
OOC:
@darkreaver, iirc Yao Fei handed out empty vial containers. No need to drink your potion just yet :)
Now that they got what they came for, there was no need to tarry. Wu Meng nodded to the others, and began their stealthy retreat.

Mimi revealed to the group what she knows about the dangerous giant toad. "Yup, let's leave now!"
OOC:
Btw, if we are doing Undertake a Perilous Journey, just count my roll as 10+ as I actually have that ability under my ranger class.
Oct 13, 2019 9:20 am
OOC:
We already did the rolls for Undertake a Perilous Journey. That covers the return trip.

Mimi, please Defy Danger (DEX) to sneak away undetected. This is a group effort, so take +1 on the roll. Add Orengi's cunning as well.
Oct 13, 2019 9:28 am
Mimi relies on her sneaking skills...

Rolls

Defy Danger(Dex +2, group +1, Cunning +2) - (2d6+5)

(14) + 5 = 10

Oct 13, 2019 10:49 am
There are several tense moments when you are almost spotted -- at one point, a toad steps on Iko's foot, and once, Feng brushes up against one's pebbly skin -- but you make it out of a dangerous situation thanks to Mimi's and Orengi's combined skill!

On the return trip, you keep well away from the haunted valley; you can still feel the tugging on your heartstrings by the faintly heard birdsong.

By late afternoon, you're back at Yao Fei's, where you give the apothecary the deadly mold samples. The slug-man gives you the three doses of antivenom he was able to produce.

What now? To the salt marsh?
Oct 13, 2019 3:00 pm
"These antidotes are good insurance." The monk was now ready to hunt the beast.
Oct 14, 2019 5:33 pm
Mimi, you came here to investigate rampaging spirits that may one day destroy nature. But the spread of the unnatural and deadly, mind-altering yellow fungus could be just as great a threat to the natural order. Thinking back to the desolate valley haunted by ghosts of its beautiful past, you shudder to consider the possibility of an entire forest or the entire world ending up like that!
Oct 14, 2019 6:43 pm
"The hunt is on." Feng responds casually, looking at something in her finger with great interest.
Oct 14, 2019 11:16 pm
"So we got back safely thanks to Mimi's guidance." Kalam bows respectably to Mimi. "I think that hunting down this beast and putting an end to it once and for all would be the best course of action for now. We can deal with the spread of that fungus after. Saving citizens may give us insight as to what is going on here." Kalam looks at each individual as he says this.
Oct 14, 2019 11:22 pm
"We may end up hunting by night. Best we bring some torches as well as some of the equipment Kalam suggested earlier."
Oct 14, 2019 11:33 pm
Iko looks to the sky, judging how long it will be until sunset. "If it is all the same to you, this would be the best time for me to meditate and offer prayer to Dai'Shan. I fear we will need more power than I currently have for our hunt." He looks to the rest of them. "It would be best if I could find a private, quiet place to perform my rites. I believe we still have a room at the guildmaster's inn, do we not?"
Oct 15, 2019 2:13 am
OOC:
You no longer have the suite. Hee-Chul kicked you out this morning. You can meditate in Rong Hua's room, or you may rent rooms if there any available.

It is You Shi, the hour of the rooster. The sun is about to set.
Oct 15, 2019 3:48 am
"Unless you wish to pay for a room, no. My shop however, is always free for you."
Oct 15, 2019 5:19 am
"Sure, let's hunt the beast..." Mimi nods to Wu Meng. She has been busy thinking back about the threats to the natural world she has seen. "Once this people-killing creature is slain, shall we handle the issue about the forests? I can't help but feel a growing imbalance..."
Oct 15, 2019 12:43 pm
somebox says:
"Unless you wish to pay for a room, no. My shop however, is always free for you."
"That would be preferable, I think. Thank you, Xian Feng." Iko says. "If everyone likes, they may stay here, watch for the beast or prepare the battlefield in some way. I should only be gone n hour or so."
The priest waits to see if anyone will join him, then leaves to go to Xian Feng's shop.

"Very well, if we have errands let us run them, and meet here again in an hour." Wu Meng himself adjourned to check on Rong Hua. He had looked out for her yesterday, and felt it necessary to see how she was doing.
Oct 15, 2019 6:39 pm
Wei stays silent for the most part once they hot back to the city. As the group splits up to make preparations Wei goes to check on possible supplies for combating the beast.

"Mimi, I agree with you. The issue of the forest and this fungus must be laid to rest. I shall assist you in this endeavor should Meng agree to as well. No disrespect, but he and what he carries are my primary concerns at the moment. He is the last Mountain of Shifu Gen. That makes him invaluable, not including that which he carries." Kalam sighs.
Oct 16, 2019 4:15 am
Feng has the curious blue crystals in her possession, perhaps a vendor can give her some insight.
OOC:
I don't even remember having these things, but they've been in my inventory so I should probably do something about them.
Oct 16, 2019 5:21 am
Mimi has no clue about what Kalam is saying about Meng, so she nodded in response with a confused expression. She figured it's best not to ask too much.
Oct 16, 2019 6:07 am
"Thank you Kalam. I do have our shared agenda in mind, which is to investigate the massacre of my temple, and figure this out as well." Wu Meng showed Shifu Rao's flute to the duelist. "This belonged to Shifu Rao, and was found in the possession of an evil Hiptite wizard. Perhaps some trouble may have befallen the temple of the Wind as well."

He next pulled out his most treasured object which he had been guarding with his life, the scroll given to given by his shifu. "I have been given this, but am only allowed to open it when I attain enlightenment. It is part of a sutra shared between my master and yours. Perhaps you have the right to open it." He humbly handed over the item to Kalam.
Oct 16, 2019 10:44 am
Kalam gently pushes the scroll back into Mengs hands. "I haven't reached enlightenment either brother. Though I am humbled that you should believe so." Kalam looks at the flute with a troubled expression. "You are right to be worried about Shifu Rao, that can be something else we can look into. Though I am reminded of one of Shifu Qians teachings, trying to solve the world's problems is like catching the rain." Kalam looks at the flute as he says this.
Oct 16, 2019 2:29 pm
Meng returned the scroll back to its case. As for the flute, he continued to wonder if some enemy was intentionally going after all the Eightfold Path in turn. It'd be a long journey to the lands of Hiptos to investigate this.

"To solve the world, one must first solve oneself." Meng intoned with a slight melancholy.

You each go about your business, and regroup at the apothecary in an hour.
OOC:
Iko, make sure to update your sheet with the spells you want for this mission.

Wei, list the monster-hunting equipment that you've purchased.

Feng, Yao Fei agrees to study the blue crystals.

Did I miss anything?
Oct 16, 2019 4:03 pm
OOC:
Sounds about right.
"I am ready." The monk looked forward to ridding the town of this dangerous beast.
Oct 16, 2019 5:05 pm
OOC:
What would be appropriate equipment to look for?
Oct 16, 2019 5:31 pm
OOC:
Adventuring Gear covers most things like torches, lanterns, rope, etc, but bandages and such might be useful as well. I will say that the regular antitoxin listed will not be as effective as those that Yao Fei gave you.
Oct 16, 2019 6:42 pm
You hire a boat to travel the Tiger downriver to the salt marshes. You keep a watchful eye along the riverbank for any sign of the beast, but everything is tranquil here. Now and again, you encounter crab-man work gangs coming up or down the river. They watch you with their expressionless eyestalks, but don't interact with you otherwise. The sun is westering when you arrive at the marshlands, and are greeted by the magnificent sight of scarlet reedbeds stretching nearly as far as the eye can see. It's ironic how this is the home of a race widely regarded as too stupid and brutish to appreciate such beauty.

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcS0TavPUEgXxb1KJOJ9Fp-b6GO0t9buzzUlIAkP8FkOXnSanCKx

Your guide, a crab-man with purplish eyestalks, takes you to an area abundant with tiny black snails like the one you picked out of the dead man's neck. It's hard to make them out at first, but they're definitely there. Was the victim all the way out here, or did the snail catch a ride on the monster's back? The crab-man only shakes its head when you show it the sketch of the beast. The crab-men's wattle and daub dwellings are quite a distance away. If the monster did come through here, it could have easily been mistaken for a common water buffalo. You can see one of those docile animals now, being picked clean of bugs by a white crane perched on its rump.

How do you hunt this beast? What do you do?
Oct 17, 2019 8:56 am
Mimi takes a look at the snail, and at the surroundings as the boat passes by, trying to find clues on how to find the spider-buffalo.

Unfortunately that's still a miss. Mark 1 XP.
Mimi, you find strange, tracks in the shallows that look like they match the creature's arachnid legs. The tracks look fairly fresh, but the trail is confusing, and the swampy terrain doesn't help. As you're mucking about, you hear Orengi whimpering. The fox is stuck in the mud. You move to help him out, but realize that's no ordinary mud. It's quicksand.

What do you do?
Oct 17, 2019 9:56 am
"Orengi!" Mimi cried as she saw her friend stuck in the quicksand. "Don't move! Stay still! I'll save you!" She look around to find something that can be used to pull him up without entering into the quicksand as well.

"Hold on Mimi, let me." Wu Meng leaped from his position, light as a feather. His plan was to flit from where he was over the quicksand to see if he could extract Orengi safely without being impeded.
OOC:

Orengi is safe for now. This place is as dangerous as it's beautiful. It is now dusk. You're in the middle of a swamp, with no real idea how to hunt this monster. But Mimi is convinced the tracks are no more than a few hours old, so the creature can't have gotten far.

What do you do?
Oct 17, 2019 2:06 pm
"Lead on Mimi. Trust your instincts, if not your eyes."

In the waning light, Mimi picks up the trail again. It leads upstream. Suddenly, your crab-man guide lets out a hiss of alarm, and without waiting for any of you to get back in the boat, starts paddling madly for the crab-man village. Several dwellings are burning.

What do you do?
Oct 17, 2019 8:15 pm
"Could our beast do that?" Feng cracks her knuckles, clearly getting ready for a fight as she peers directly into the growing fires, the terrifying visage of tormented souls trying to break from the flames and smoke. Her hands suddenly erupt into flames, eyes rolling back. "Get ready."

Oct 17, 2019 10:32 pm
"Well, he has more pressing matters, it seems. Can't blame him, wish we could help but looks like he doesn't want it by then way he's running off." Kalam looks at the smoke in the distance. We have a monster to hunt, any idea as to its where abouts? Kalam inquiries.
Oct 17, 2019 11:24 pm
Wu Meng watched the flames for a while, to see if he could ascertain from this distance what the commotion was. He did so while he waited for Mimi to continue directing them.
Oct 18, 2019 3:08 am
The trail leads upstream -- in the general direction of the city -- but Mimi loses it again when you get to deeper water. The crab-man village is a ways off in the opposite direction. The terrain between you and the village is uncertain: alternating shallow and deep water (and don't forget the quicksand).
Oct 18, 2019 3:34 am
"Guys, I have lost the trail of the beast in the waters. From what I see, it has continued on upstream towards the city. I would guess that this creature may not be the cause of the fire happening in the village downstream. What do you guys think we should do next? Try to save the village, or look for the beast nearer to the city?
Oct 18, 2019 4:48 am
OOC:
Failed to mention, you can still catch the boat if you decide to head for the village to help or investigate, or if you decide to take it from the crab-man (by force or through persuasion) to make your own way upriver.
Oct 18, 2019 9:51 am
"The boat is the safer option for us to return. The darkness has made it hard to navigate. Let us at least head to retrieve the boat."
Oct 18, 2019 11:58 pm
Iko looks out towards the city for awhile, trying to determine the best course of action. He finally speaks up, "If we face these perils simply tracking it down, it may be best for us to wait until there is some light before attempting to fight it. In the meantime, we may be able to help mitigate the damage the fire is causing." He looks to his companions for a decision to be made.
Oct 19, 2019 12:06 am
"I understood that the beast only comes out at night. We may have no choice but to hunt it during so, despite the inherent difficulties."
Oct 19, 2019 12:10 am
Regardless of when it hunts, we may be able to find it when it is nesting... or sleeping or whatever word you would use to describe what it does. And Mimi would likely better able to find it in the sunlight than be moonlight." He looks to the ranger. "Correct me if I am wrong."
Oct 19, 2019 4:18 am
"There is fire, death. Are we to stand idly by?!" Feng looks at the fire with an enraged expression, her brows furrowed and mouth contorted into a grimace. It's hard to say how much of the conversation she heard.
Oct 19, 2019 9:00 am
Feng's passionate anger sparked Mimi from her previous passive attitude towards the fire. "Feng is right! We should not be ignoring the crisis of the village fire! It might continue to spread out of control, and destroy even this beautiful environment..." Mimi thought back to the scene of the forest that had all along been burnt and dead. "Whether or not the beast caused it, I feel that the fire is a bad omen..."
Oct 19, 2019 10:39 am
"Let us make haste then, before there's nothing left to save."
Oct 20, 2019 4:35 am
"It is agreed then, we help the villagers. Hey boat crab-man! Let us help!" Kalam yells as he makes his way towards his boat, wading into the water as needed. He helps those who need it into the boat. "As Meng said make haste, before the fire claims any lives if it hasn't done so already."
OOC:

On a 7-9, you only get one question. You are also too far away to properly Discern Realities. However...
As you draw closer in the boat, the situation is readily apparent. More than half a dozen hovels are ablaze, and the fire is still spreading. Crab-folk are running about with buckets of water to douse the flames, but to no avail. What do you do?
Oct 20, 2019 8:28 am
"If only if I had been a good druid, I could have commanded water spirits to douse the fire just like my mother used to do... Do any of you guys have an ability to stop the fire?"
Oct 20, 2019 9:27 am
"I have no such ability. But I will use what little I have to see if it makes a difference." Wu Meng bowed, and once again leapt ahead with his qinggong, or lightfoot skill. He moved as fast as he could, grabbing two buckets along the way; back and forth he went to try to douse the nearest hut.
OOC:
Edit: That's a nice roll for saving people, so I'm visualising Meng leaping gracefully, dodging crab-men and flames, tossing buckets over rooftops. :) Strong hit, so I get to choose 3.

For interpretation I see it as you said: Feng has it under control for a bit, but requires some assistance in snuffing it out completely before spreading further.
Oct 22, 2019 7:23 am
Feng quiets the flames. Mimi and Orengi help the crab-folk douse the fires with buckets of water. Wei plants his feet squarely and heaves the burning, collapsed wall off of the pinned crab-man. Kalam and Meng rescue trapped folk and guide them through the smoke to where Iko tends to the injured. The crisis is surmounted.

Though grateful for your help, many of the villagers bow and scrape with a measure of fear. People generally don't come out here to the salt marsh except to round up more slaves to add to their stables. A crab-man steps forward, and you surmise it is an elder of sorts. Surprisingly, the elder speaks the common tongue, albeit awkwardly. No one has ever bothered to learn the language of the crab-men, which sounds like nothing more than bestial hisses and clicks.

"Wee thankk... why kkomm you?"

What do you do?
Oct 22, 2019 10:52 am
Wu Meng bowed, "We are glad that no terrible harm has befallen your village. Our guide returned here with our boat, we still require it, as we are hunting this deadly beast. Perhaps you have some clues to its lair or whereabouts, and can direct us." The crab-men were regarded as slaves, but Meng spoke to the elder with respect, as an equal.
Oct 22, 2019 3:46 pm
"No problem, crab-person! Saving others is always a good thing! " Mimi also replied oblivious to the social circumstances of the Crab-men. "By the way, do you know of what caused the fire in the first place?"

I think we'll just ignore that, Kalam. Do not mark XP.
The crab-elder eyes all of you with surprising intelligence. With its alien features, it's hard to tell what it's thinking. With a stick, it draws in the sand. A creature out of nightmare, identical to the sketch you were given, save for one feature: in the crab-man's drawing, the creature has a tail ending in a poison stinger, much like a scorpion's. Given the venom Iko discovered, it makes perfect sense. With gestures, more drawings in the sand, and the crab-elder's rudimentary speech, a possible location for the creature's lair is suggested to you. It's series of mud pools along a small tributary near a bend in the Tiger just a few miles from the city.

What do you do?
Oct 23, 2019 2:38 pm
OOC:
So to clarify, it's further down the Tiger than we've been exploring? We were first exploring the salt marshes downstream from the city.
"Thank you. May we continue to have your crab-men guide us there in a boat?"
Oct 23, 2019 2:58 pm
OOC:
Nope, you are being directed back upstream. You already passed that tributary (just one of several) on your way here, but the salt marsh snails being your only clue at the time, you didn't think to look there.
Oct 23, 2019 3:00 pm
The crab-men are taken aback that you would ask their permission for anything. Permission is granted.
Oct 24, 2019 7:48 am
Satisfied that they had done whatever they could to help the village, Wu Meng got back on the boat with the others, and nodded to their guide to proceed where the elder had directed them towards, the mud pools. "...Does anyone have any extra garments?" Feng has regained her composure now that the situation has been remedied. She doesn't seem too embarrassed with her current situation; if anything she only looks annoyed at destroying perfectly good clothes.
Oct 25, 2019 6:01 am
Mimi, there is nothing out of the ordinary here. By all accounts, the fire was started by a wayward spark from a cookfire. Your investigation does turn up something important: Orengi sniffs out a lost crabling trapped under some debris. The happy reunion with the crab-mother is well worth the delay.

Feng, the crab-folk (it turns out they are hermaphrodites) donate some of their ragged clothing. The threadbare garments are loose and smelly, but will preserve your modesty.
Oct 25, 2019 6:12 am
You head back upriver in the deepening gloam and find where the tributary joins the Tiger. Your guide refuses to go any further. Besides, the stream is too shallow for the boat. The crab-man motions they will wait for you here. You will have to trudge up the muddy stream.

The stream bed is criss-crossed with the beast's tracks. It's an indecipherable mess to anyone but Mimi and Orengi, to whom it's clear the creature last came through in the morning before the sun came up and baked the mud dry. Those newest tracks head inland. The beast hasn't left its lair, but it might be heading your way this very moment! What do you do?

"Hunt it like any other monster. Set a trap or ambush and hit it from range. If it's as poisonous as we have seen, engaging it in close proximity could be very fatal." Kalam surveys the terrain. "Mimi, could you please select a spot for something like that. You have the better eye for the terrain." Kalam looks at everyone then. "If we need bait, I'll volunteer. It's my plan, and I won't put anyone else in harm's way for it."

"Spread ourselves out. It'll help if we are able to come at it from all sides. Maintain eye contact with each other if we can." Wu Meng began to make some space to encircle the lair, knowing that he moved the quickest amongst them and can swiftly come to anyone's aid should they need it.
Oct 27, 2019 3:31 am
What Mimi sees from the top of the tree sends chills up her spine. In the soft, wet earth next to a mud pool, the monster lies in a shallow burrow, in the middle of giving birth to a clutch of scorplings. Pale, soft, disgusting things, the squirming scorplings huddle as their sisters are born... four, now five. As Mimi looks on, the mother then begins to devour her young!

Mimi reports the sickening scene to her companions (do you climb down, or do you call out?). What do you all do?
Oct 27, 2019 7:24 am
Mimi climbs back down to report that not only did she find the beast, but that it is also giving birth to young which it later consumes. The canabalism of the beast clearly upsets her.

You need to watch out for a surprise attack!

Kalam sees the beast just as it charges Mimi. Years of muscle memory and reflex training take over. Even before he mentally decided to move, he was in motion. His body charging the beast, putting himself between it and Mimi. His sole thought being to protect these people.
His daggers a blur of motion as he intervenes, a torrential wave of steel clashes before the creature.

The scorpotaur charges. Kalam meets it head on, his blades flashing, but the desperate beast plows through him, sending the Disciple of the Sky flying!

Iko mends Mimi's leg. It's good enough to take her weight, but she'll walk with a limp for a few days. The magical glow of Dai'Shan's blessing draws the monster's attention, and it charges the cleric and ranger. Mimi braces her spear against the charge, but suddenly Feng is there, sliding to the ground, slashing its belly open with her flaming blades! With a final bellow, the scorpotaur collapses, gutted like a fish.

The beast is no more! Next to where it lies, there are signs of a passage to what might be a lower level of this crypt.

Kalam picks himself up off the floor, realizing that he was flung over to the opposite side of the small crypt. He gasped at the pain in his side. "By the spirits.." he breaths. Then looks over at the corpse of the beast. "No wonder the guard didn't want to deal with it. The casualties would have been numerous. Think it broke a rib or two." Kalam winces as he tries to take a deep breath.

"Life from death, begin again." Feng has blood on her hands, but it simply burns away. Her flaming swords dissipate as she stands up and take a sharp breath. "We should take it's head, as proof." She bats off the dirt from her ragged clothing, looking at the beast with something close to disgust.

Wu Meng takes a closer look around the ancient crypt. To his astonishment, each of the eight tombs standing against the walls bears a symbol very similar to those of the eight schools: Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain, Earth. Very similar, but different. Could these be masters or disciples of a tradition predating even the thousands of years old Eightfold Way? If only Shifu Gen were still alive so Meng could ask him!

But what about the ninth tomb that lies in the center? Meng finds no clues. No inscriptions or markings of any kind. Unlike the others, which lie cracked or completely broken open, this one is intact.

Mimi will also attempt to see if she can help out with claiming an identifiable trophy from the dead beast, even with her current limp. Iko knows of nearly every burial method known to men. This is not a tomb itself, but a solid slab of rock -- a sort of seal. In some cultures this would be warded with magics to protect the entombed from intrusion. And then there are others which are the reverse -- warded to protect the outside from the entombed!

Music

But what could possibly be the point of a seal when over there is an obvious passage to the lower levels? And what of the monster? Was it some sort of ancient guardian, or did it simply stumble upon this place? None of it is adding up. The tasks you set for yourself today have been accomplished, though not without difficulties. Do you return to the city, or do you satisfy your curiosity by exploring the lower crypt?

As above, so below. Here you find another octagonal chamber, smaller than the one above. Smelly water drips from numerous cracks in the ceiling. The floor is crisscrossed with tangles of tree-roots and covered in an inch of water. Mouldering stone pedestals stand in alcoves set in each wall. Whatever objects once rested in these places of honor rotted away long ago.

Orengi whimpers, shivering, and licks Mimi's hand. The fox curls up miserably in a corner and refuses to move. Mimi has to carry him -- a difficult proposition, as Mimi's leg is still hurting.

Searching the alcoves, Meng finds only scraps of rusted metal, a bit of carved bone, a small jade button. The back of one of the alcoves is split by a great crack where twisted roots burst through long ago. The roots and vines creak and groan, as if they are moving, seeking... something. But it's just your mind playing tricks. Perhaps there are other spots here where the architecture has given way, exposing earth that can be dug through? "Its odd to have a sewer system running below the crypt.
Unless it was part of a bigger structure or in a city proper.

Iko shrugs, following the rest down as there seemed to be no other option.
Nov 22, 2019 8:14 pm
Iko, unlike everyone else here, you are in your element. You know that the crypt's most important occupant -- whether that occupant was someone to be protected or contained -- is bound to be somewhere below. The eight in the first chamber would have been the guards. The next chamber, with the alcoves, would have housed objects of power, or at least, importance, and most likely would have each belonged to the eight guardians. What lies below? Great wisdom, or great evil?

The group descends stone stairs slippery with scum and all but worn smooth by water trickling down it for centuries. Another waterlogged chamber. This time, you judge the flooding would come up to your necks if you descend into it. In the middle of the chamber, hovering above the water, is a ghost.

Mimi is still slowly making her way down. "Hey, is anything there? Why are we stopping?" She asks, her attention to the stairs.
Nov 24, 2019 9:16 am
Iko, from his bone structure, you can tell that the ghost was of the Daguur people, an ethnic group that inhabits the steppes to the southeast, bordering the Haunted Desert.

Meng, based on the ghost's style of clothing, you know with absolute certainty that he was a disciple or master of Wind -- or rather, his era's version of it.

Iko doesn't hear a response, but he can see the softly glowing ghost reflected on the water's surface. It gestures for you to follow it. Then, it slowly slips into the murky water and moves off to your right.

"It doesn't seem to bear any ill intent. And I recognise its attire, as would Kalam. It was a disciple of the Eightfold Way. I don't see an exit, I intend to follow it as our next best option."
Nov 25, 2019 6:46 pm
"So be it. Kuroi stay behind me, don't piss of the ghost." Feng trusts Wu Meng, but she isn't confident this tomb is free of other dangers, and Kuroi is looking rather vulnerable to her at the moment.
Nov 25, 2019 6:50 pm
Iko follows, stating "I think you are right, Meng. Though I don't recognize the clothing, the ghost is of the Daguur people. Let us be careful, however. Those that have passed on often forget about simple things like breathing."
Nov 26, 2019 5:12 am
I agree with you all equally. Though I myself am a student of the sky. It seems our venerable ancestor has something to show us. Sine the faux treasure vault was looted above. I can only assume that it is something of greater importance. Kalam follows along for many reasons. It is suffice to say that his curiosity is peaked and must be sated.
Nov 26, 2019 5:29 am
While Wei watches over Mimi and Orengi huddled on the stairs, the rest of you take deep breaths and follow the ghost underwater. The apparition sheds a spectral light, revealing the features of this chamber hidden underneath the murky water. In the center of the room lies a plain but large stone tomb. Four submerged passages lead out of the chamber. The ghost glides towards one of these and gestures for you to follow it without delay.

Kalam does a quick breathing exercise to expand his air capacity for the swim. Then plunges in after. When the spirit stops and shows the indicated tunnel, Kalam also follows along.
Nov 27, 2019 2:04 am
Mimi will simply remain resting on the stairs. She believes it's safer that way after suffering an injury. She is also probably explained by Wei that they had seen a ghost that some of them recognise as an ancient follower of the monk tradition, and so they try to follow it.

The specter leads you down the submerged, featureless hallway. Here and there, earth shows gaps in the crumbling stonework where twisted roots have broken through. You pass several chambers to the left and right, but the ghost leads onward, leaving you to wonder what ancient secrets might be found within. Then again, given the deteriorated state of the upper chambers, it's unlikely these fully-submerged halls have fared any better.

At length, just when you begin to fear you might run out of breath, you emerge into a sinkhole in the woods. The water's surface is all but hidden underneath a layer of scum carpeted with dead leaves, and the limestone walls are covered in muck, but at least you can see the moons and the stars above.

The ghost nods, farewell, and makes as if to leave. What do you do?

They had held their breath for a while, answers or no, Meng needed to surface to catch some air. He swam upwards, and poked his head out of the water to see what the situation was with the sinkhole, how high it was to the top, and whether the sides could be climbed.

It's a roughly 45-foot climb. There are handholds, but covered in muck. It won't be easy, but definitely doable. No roll necessary, just RP a tough climb if that's what you decide to do.
Dec 3, 2019 1:41 am
Wu Meng thanked his ancestor spirit in his heart for showing them a way out. He began to climb, grateful for his newly mastered qigong skill that enabled him to move more easily even in such difficult circumstances. Still, there was some effort, and a lot of muck involved.

When he reached a safe spot, he turn to wait for his companions, and while he did so, he pulled out Shifu Rao's flute, and began to play a soulful tune, to reach out to the spirit, who was clearly a disciple of Wind, who continued to haunt the place.
Dec 3, 2019 3:30 am
Kalam let Meng go first, knowing the surest climber would make the path easier to scale for the rest. Once he hears Mengs flute playing he follows suit, trying his best to tell himself that he will go back for his companions. Keeping each in his minds eye. Remembering that Mimi was hurt, and scared, the look in her eyes as they left her and Wei behind. He had to get back to them, it made him push himself to find what was needed and to get out as soon as was possible.
He grunts as he climbs up onto a ledge near Meng, sweat beading his brow. "What... What do you think... the ghost wants us to find?"
Dec 3, 2019 6:09 am
Feng eyes the spirit wordlessly, silently thanking it for bringing them to safety. When she notices the climb they'll have to make she feels a little less thankful, but decides it's good enough considering their circumstances. And so she climbs after the two one step at a time, by the end of it both her hands have small cuts from the rocks, but she isn't too worried about that right now.

"The ghost wanted us to find freedom, for it led us to safety. I assume we are going to rescue the others, would be rather cold for us to leave them behind no?"
Dec 3, 2019 8:11 am
Mimi is getting bored and nervous as she continues to sit near the water level. She picks up a loose stone, and tosses it into the water. It hops 3 times on the surface before sinking into the dark waters. "I hope they are still OK..." She mutters to Orengi.
Dec 3, 2019 3:06 pm
Meng waited to see if the ghost had any response to the tune that came out of Shifu Rao's flute. Perhaps there was a magical connection between that and the ghost.

"I'd like to wait to see if the ghost reappears. Now that we've found the way out, we should swim back the same way to bring the others out the same way. Unless we re-locate the entrance from up top, and try to find the mechanism to reopen the vault from where the beast's lair was."

The moment Wu Meng breathes into it, the bamboo flute seems to take on a life of its own. It sings a haunting melody of the East Wind and the North Wind in a dance over the mountaintops, and the things that they witness along the way. It's a song of death and rebirth, of longing and regret.

Music

A wind springs up, but then subsides as the ghost silently interrupts the song. Excitedly gesturing for all of you to follow, it zooms through the trees.
[ +- ] Assuming you follow:
Dec 5, 2019 1:57 pm
Wu Meng wasted no time in following the ghost, bounding forward in anticipation, almost leaving the others behind him. He understood that the music from the flute was somehow mystically connected to the ghost and it was confirmed when he reached the tomb. Trembling with excitement, Meng resumed playing the flute.
Dec 5, 2019 2:17 pm
Music fills the dank hall. In the chamber below, Orengi's ears prick up as the plaintive tune resonates through the stone slab. The tomb marked Wind slides shuddering back towards the wall.

The ghost beams at Wu Meng, then points at the slab while looking expectantly at Feng and Kalam.
Dec 6, 2019 3:18 am
Kalam tries to keep up with Meng, but just gets to the tomb as he begins to play again. As fast as Kalam is with his blade, he needs to work on his foot work. He chastised himself during the sprint.
As Meng plays the music and the slabs move, Kalam reaches into the hole looking for Mimi and Wei. Not seeing them he calls out "Mimi! We found a way out! Come back towards the entrance! Mimi, Wei, can you hear me!" Kalam waits for a response, torn between jumping in and getting his companions, and not wanting the slab to close again.

Forgive me if the description was unclear. The slab has not moved. The way down is still sealed.

On your return to this chamber, you found three of the tombs (Fire, Wind, Sky) have slid forward from their places against the wall. Wind has slid back while Meng plays the flute that once belonged to Shifu Rao, Master of Wind.

Now, only Fire and Sky remain slid forward in what is apparently some sort of "locked" position. It's not clear what you're expected to do, but the ghost is now looking at Feng and Kalam.

"Meng whatever you do, don't stop." Feng looks astounded at such a contraption, wondering why such a device is even in place. Her eyes drift between the ghost and the Fire tomb they're motioning towards, starting to piece things together. "Just have to stay calm. Easy." Feng reassures herself, crashing her fists into each other to create a burst of fire, her hands now burning.
OOC:
Please note I'm very bad at puzzles. But the first step seems clear. Also pretty sure I don't need to roll for burning hands but eh.

Meng understood what needed to be done, and he saw that Feng and Kalam understood too. Combining their powers would enable the tombs to slide back to their original positions.
OOC:
Nice classic puzzle! Glad Meng brought along the flute.

sorry bout that, in that case, Kalam would still shout for Mimi

Hes on his knees in front of the slab, trying to pry it up with his fingers, calling for Mimi. Seeing the ghost looking back and forth, then Feng produce fire, realization flooded into Kalams eyes. He jumps up from the closed slab on the floor, and moves to the tomb of sky.
Kalam draws his Janbiya, then draws a breath, his blade begins to drip iridescent blue sand. He quickly etches a sigil in the air with the tip of the blade, it lingers for but a moment. Then his blade flashes out piercing the sigil in a thrust, lightning flashing down his arm into his blade contacting the stone slab of the tomb lid.

The tombs return to their original positions. The stone slab slides back to the center, unsealing the stairway, freeing Mimi, Orengi, and Wei. The ghost smiles, then fades from your sight. Will it continue to haunt this place, or has it perhaps, in helping you, earned its place among its ancestors?

Countless other questions remain. Who were these monks? What was the purpose of the seal? What do the submerged chambers contain? You may never know unless you come back here, possibly with a team of scholars, and either come equipped for underwater exploration, or find some way to drain the lower levels.

For now, you have accomplished what you came for. Guildmaster Tamchim will be pleased to learn you have slain the scorpotaur. No doubt, the beastmaster, Jimseung will be quite displeased.

What do you do?
Dec 9, 2019 8:03 am
"Thank you everyone, for agreeing to explore this tomb.We did not manage to find much, but at least I now know its link to my ancestors. We can return to town."
Dec 10, 2019 2:00 am
"How are you guys up here?! You better speak fast, or I'm gonna spear one of you doppelgangers!" Mimi demands quickly, raising her spear while looking at everyone in the upper room.
Dec 10, 2019 3:26 am
"We found a way out in order to come back for you. Ask Orengi, he'll know it's us." Meng smiled.
Dec 10, 2019 5:19 am
"If you try to spear me I will burn it." Feng crosses her arms, standing her ground. She softens up slightly, remember Kuroi isn't entirely used to her brash attitude. "But it will not come to that. Calm yourself."
OOC:
That was a neat little sequence Jabes.
Dec 10, 2019 6:45 am
Mimi looks at Orengi, and seeing his relatively calm demeanour, figures that her rescuers must really be her friends. "I see, sorry about that! Don't worry Feng, I definitely wouldn't dare to try to spear you!" Mimi puts away her weapon. "Finally glad to be out of that damp place! Let's go get ourselves some fresh air!"

"Yes, Mimi, it is us. We would not leave the both of you to suffer the dark." Kalam extends his hand. "I am truly sorry for any distress our departure may have caused. If you could give me a chance to make amends? he says as he bows before Mimi and Wei.

You gather everyone together, leave the crypt through the monster's burrow, and take the boat upriver back to the city. It is nearing the Hour of the Pig when the Opal City's walls come into view, your crab-man's silent paddle stirring up the lanterns reflected in the Tiger's waters.

At the gate, the sentries look on lazily at Jimseung and half a dozen of his hunters in a stand-off against Sungyeol and five other guild members loyal to Tamchim. You cannot hear what is being said, but you can guess it has to do with Jimseung's pet, the monster you just slew. Another one of the beastmaster's pets, a massive, black-haired mastiff, stands at its master's feet with hackles raised and teeth bared.

What do you do?
Jan 26, 2020 5:45 am
Mimi looks at the others. "I am not sure what's going on. Do you city folks know what's happening?"
Jan 26, 2020 2:21 pm
Kalam follows behind Mimi, wary of the building conflict. He keeps his hand close to the dagger in his belt.
Jan 26, 2020 2:29 pm
OOC:
You're all still in the boat, and have not been spotted by anyone at the gate/walls. You can instruct the crab-man where to land, you may slip into the water and swim, or try any number of things. The current distance is Far.
Jan 26, 2020 3:02 pm
"I was unaware that Jimseung was vested in the creature we just slew." Wu Meng explained, "Our creature hunt was directed by Tamchim; he was concerned by the deaths the creature caused. But I don't know what the conflict is between the two of them. It is troubling that the authorities don't seem to be concerned."
Jan 26, 2020 10:06 pm
"It is of little surprise for this to occur. I can try and... convince him this whole situation is a 'misunderstanding', or we could try and sneak past the shortsighted fool. Or both, I do love it when we ambush."

"I'm uncertain as to who these men are. Or what their involvement with the beast is." Kalam looks at the scene on the shore. "It does look to be getting heated.
If we are to intervene, discretion would be the best option."
Jan 27, 2020 4:14 pm
"Do they already know that we killed the beast? That seems unlikely."
Jan 27, 2020 4:26 pm
"Very unlikely, unless we are being followed. There wouldn't have been time otherwise, as far as I can tell. "
Jan 27, 2020 9:06 pm
"Damn them all. We may have to intervene, seeing as we need to get paid. A favor wouldn't hurt either." Feng reasons, reminding everyone what's most important.
Jan 28, 2020 12:45 am
"Very well, then let us all approach together. Our numbers may yet help balance the confrontation, and hopefully defuse it." Wu Meng waited for all to assent, before heading forward calmly but confidently.

Mimi just nods her head and draws back an arrow, just incase.

Kalam agrees with Meng and follows in his stead. Daggers sheathed but close to hand.
Jan 28, 2020 2:10 pm
Iko grunts at the display of the two groups, shaking his head. He has little to offer in combat, but follows nonetheless.
Jan 28, 2020 2:22 pm
"Greetings, we have returned with good news. The threat of the killer beast has been neutralised. The people are safe again." Meng kept his words as positive as possible, to focus on the benefits. "Perhaps a mutual peace is in order." The monk eyed Jimseung and his men.

Parley - (2d6+2)

(23) + 2 = 7

Jan 28, 2020 4:15 pm
OOC:
Guildmaster Tamchim is not here. It appears he sent Sungyeol and five others. Sungyeol and Dae-won were the elven brothers who helped you fight Atekhramun.
As you arrive, the argument breaks off but the tension remains high. Jimseug and his men glare at you. Sungyeol nods at you in recognition. There is relief in his eyes, but his tone is measured when he responds. "Well done. The Guildmaster will be pleased. You have done the city a great service."

"The creature was my property," Jimseung growls, soft enough so the guards don't hear, before continuing in his regular, booming voice, "The creature was mine to capture and kill! I made that clear to Tamchim. You stole my contract!" The scarred beastmaster points a meaty finger at the sack containing your trophy. "Hand that over, and we can all go our separate ways, no hard feelings."

What do you do?
Jan 29, 2020 3:02 pm
"Is this the case Sungyeol?" Wu Meng continued, keeping his tone moderate. "Did we misappropriate a contract that belonged to someone else?"

To Jimseung, "If you have a prior arrangement with the Guildmaster then we are in error. Do you have proof of your contract?"
Jan 30, 2020 1:55 am
Kalam remains calm and let's Meng handle the discussion. Mainly because he is unaware of the details of the contract or the situation between the two groups. So trying to avoid putting our group in a precarious situation.
Feb 5, 2020 6:47 pm
Sungyeol shakes his head, and responds to Meng, pitching his voice for the guards to hear, "There was never any contract. The Guild did not hire anyone to hunt the creature down. The monster was a menace, and by ridding the city of it, you folks rendered the city a public service! The reward offered by the City Council belongs to you." This is a bit of a surprise. The reward must have been posted sometime today, while you were outside the city.

The elven archer then continues in a low voice, "If it were up to me, the Council would be informed it was you that brought the beast here, Jimseung. Walk away now, and thank Tamchim's discretion you won't be held responsible for any of the deaths your recklessness has caused."
Feb 5, 2020 6:47 pm
Jimseung laughs, and his hand goes to his sword hilt as he fixes Sungyeol with a menacing gaze. "Out of my way, boy. Or I'll cut you to pieces along with these interlopers to feed my dog."

Sungyeol and his men stand their ground. The gate guards, seeming to finally grasp the gravity of the situation, take up their polearms uncertainly.

What do you do?

OOC:
I roll for parley or discern realities?
Feb 6, 2020 2:30 am
OOC:
There's only one dog, a massive, black-haired mastiff (imagine one of those huge Tibetan mastiffs). It is at Jimseung's feet, with hackles raised, and unleashed.

I think Parley would be appropriate. Bear in mind that to parley you need leverage. Leverage is something they need or want. Take -1 on the roll because 1) it's currently hostile, and 2) you can't actually speak to it like you could a person.
Feb 6, 2020 2:34 pm
Mimi takes out a ration and gave it to Orengi to hold in his mouth. She gestures for him to step forward a bit facing the dog, and place it down in a submissive manner.

result is 8, so partial success.

Kalam quietly, and calmly watches everything. Being wary of Jimseung, knowing men who hunt beasts, typically act like them.
Feb 7, 2020 3:12 am
Feng follows Kalam's example, crossing her arms with an almost annoyed expression on her face. She eyes up the beast, wondering if she could best such a beast in singular combat, and if there is a price on it's head. Perhaps as a trophy?
Feb 7, 2020 6:09 am
OOC:
Mark off 1 ration, Mimi.
Jimseung takes his hand off his weapon, and everyone visibly relaxes, including the guards. The huge mastiff wolfs down the offered morsel. But now it wants more, and is eyeing Orengi hungrily. It's big enough to swallow the fox in one gulp. Its master makes no move to bring it to heel, either.

Jimseung's gaze is equally predatory. "The Council, yes. What are you suggesting, monk?"

What do you all do?

"Your falling out with Tamchim is precisely the reason why you will never be able to regain the favour of the Council, who has entrusted him to be the Guildmaster. We can persuade Tamchim to place his trust in you again, if you're prepared to make peace with him, by showing him how you cooperated with us when we brought back the beast. Your reinstatement in the Guild will return you to any former good standing you may have had with the Council."
Feb 9, 2020 3:54 am
"To be honest, I don't give two shits what Tamchim and the Council think of me, as long as they don't interfere with my business, and they don't mess with my animals. You people have messed with my animals," Tamchim growls, his tone still predatory, but then with a low whistle he brings his hound to heel. "I'll let this pass. But you owe me. I won't forget it." With another whistle, the beastmaster orders his men to follow him as he and his great hound exit the city and withdraw into the wilderness.

Sungyeol wipes his brow in relief, and grasps Meng's shoulder. "You have prevented unnecessary bloodshed. Well done, my friends. What now? Mimi! You are hurt!"
Feb 9, 2020 2:47 pm
The peace-observing monk simply genuflected and bowed. He was satisfied to have returned to town after their hunting expedition, and sought nothing more tonight than to retire, cleanse and meditate.
Feb 9, 2020 4:37 pm
Kalam watches Jimseung leave, then turns to Meng, You continue to impress me. I doubt I could have dealt with that and gotten a better outcome. Well done brother. At that last Kalam bows.
Feb 10, 2020 12:07 pm
"Oh, I had a bad fall while hunting the beast. But it probably wouldn't be permenant, hopefully... But anyways, that's two portions of my food supply gone. That trained wolf hopefully recognised me as a friend..." Mimi says to Sungyeol.
