[Gameplay] Part 1: The Lottery & Tomb of Akhentepi

Sep 19, 2019 6:04 pm
TLDR Version

The city of Wati has a giant walled off portion that is a huge necropolis, normally off limits to all but certain members of the church of Pharasma. You are given a tomb to explore with the sanction of the church. You can only explore sites specifically designated for your adventuring party. The first site you are given is called the Tomb of Akhentepi (#23, at top left in map below). You can begin exploring it tomorrow morning after a ceremonial opening of the necropolis gates (#14 on the map).

Longer Version

The bustling desert city of Wati is near bursting with excitement. Adventurers from every corner of the Inner Sea region have assembled here beneath the hot Osirian sun to explore the tombs of the city’s necropolis, waiting only to be assigned their first sites for exploration. Surrounding the participants, the public has gathered to observe the ceremony as well. There is a festival-like quality in the air, and numerous street vendors are hawking goods and refreshments to participants and spectators alike. Some merchants have even brought what can only be considered adventuring gear to sell as last minute convenience items to explorers, while others advertise that they’ll buy recovered treasures and antiquities from those who visit their establishments.

In front of the imposing edifice of the Grand Mausoleum, an immense awning has been erected between decorated pillars in the market to provide shade for the priests of Pharasma overseeing the lottery. Beneath the awning, two urns sit atop a table elevated a few feet above the ground on a wooden stage constructed for the event. The high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, sits behind the table, while two acolytes confer with her at either side.

Numerous adventuring groups stand in small clusters near the stage, made up of multiple nationalities and races. Most keep to themselves, but some teams engage in quiet conversation with other teams, mostly speculating about what they’ll likely face in the necropolis.

The ceremony begins when the high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, rises to her feet and looks over the crowd. Sebti seems surprisingly young to hold such a distinguished position, but she has a confident air of authority. After calling for silence, she begins with an invocation to the Lady of Graves, followed by a brief history of the founding of the necropolis.
[ +- ] History
Sebti concludes by saying the following.

"Let the lottery begin! Although many of you have requested specific sites to explore, we must leave these matters to fate. The Lady of Graves is a far better judge of destiny than we of this mortal sphere. The gates of the necropolis will open at sunrise tomorrow. Use this evening to prepare yourselves for the task ahead. Let these rules guide you in your endeavors in this holy place: remember how this came to pass, every slave’s hut is a memorial, and honor the departed. May you go with the Lady’s blessing."

The priests of the Grand Mausoleum have decided on a lottery to distribute access to the tombs to make the process impartial and subject to the dictates of fate, in keeping with Pharasmin religious tenets. The church has mapped the necropolis and designated selected sites within it for exploration, dividing them into three pools, from the smallest and simplest of structures to the largest and potentially most complex. Each party of explorers is assigned three sites, one at a time, so that a group must complete its exploration of one site before gaining access to another. This process wasn’t intended to simply be arbitrary.

The church also seeks to avoid conflict between groups within the necropolis, the neglect of smaller sites in favor of those that might contain more wealth, and bribery and backroom deals with local officials to gain access to specific structures researched in advance. The Grand Mausoleum is dedicated to remaining neutral throughout the entire affair.

After Sebti returns to her seat, the two acolytes accompanying her each draw a wooden token from one of the urns on the table. The first token identifies the adventuring group, matching the token that group received when it registered for the lottery. The second token determines which tomb is assigned to that group.

A single representative of the chosen group is then summoned to the stage to present the token his group received at registration to one of the acolytes. Once the group’s identity has been confirmed, Sebti shows the representative the location of that group’s first exploration site on a map of the entire necropolis. She also gives the representative a smaller, sketched map that shows the site’s location in relation to the necropolis gates. Once a group has received its assignment, the process repeats with a new group.

When the name of the their group, The Oathbound is called, the PCs should choose a representative to approach the stage and receive their assignment.

Let's start the game with a description of your characters, and some dialog around who should be the leader.

Avaline stands with her team, leaning heavily on a stout walking stick that could certainly serve double-duty as a quarterstaff if need be. The aasimar woman wears the plain light robes common to the Osirion region over leather armor, so it's hard to see exactly, but the rest of the team would know her left leg to be both shorter than the right but also twisted unnaturally and consequently lame. Despite the extended time standing in one place undoubtedly causing her some physical discomfort, her expression betrays none of it: she is flushed with the heat but also excitement at the opportunity forthcoming, and her expression is excited, bright-eyed, and a little awestruck.

She turns vivid blue eyes on the rest of the Oathbound, her words tumbling out of her mouth in almost musical tones. "It's almost time. Who's going to go forward and get our assignment? I'd be happy to do it, unless one of you wants to have the honor?"

Go ahead dear
Cross gives Avaline a gentle push forward. Cross seems to be a young woman, with a delicate complexion and wispy light blond hair. The breeze is always catching that hair, and it is always in motion. She has several swirling blue tattoos all over her body. She carries a backpack with her essentials, a short bow and a slim sword on her hip.
She loves to smile and laugh, and have been excited for weeks about this opportunity to unearth old mysteries.

She smiles as Cross gives Avaline some incentive. Oh. Yes. Avaline. The stage is all yours.

Sasha "The Little One" is only two feet eight inches tall and 29 pounds soak and wet. She appears to be in her twenty, but it is hard to judge age on a Halfling. She has rich bronze skin and dark brown hair about shoulder length. Her dark green eyes always seem to be watch around her. She is a rather active person and tends not to sit down much.

She has spent years exploring ancient tombs and catacombs of Osirian. She has a nick name as "The Little One" And now explorer a new area. She also know to be a minor spell caster and can sing and dance when she wishes.

She is dressed in leather armor/explorer's outfit and has a short sword to her side. Across her chest is a bandoleer with 3 daggers on it. Off to her side are 2 belt pouches and one rather large belt pouch. She also sports a whip at her side as well. With a backpack and a wineskin on her back she is ready to explore.

Krazzik squats next to his cat, scratching the beast behind the ears as the cat lazily languishes on the ground, panting slightly in the heat. The large half-orc looks comfortable in his light, padded armor. His movements only belay to an experienced eye the violence he is capable of dispensing.

"Zaggra, you lazy beast. You could at least sit or stand for the occasion," he says to an apathetic yawn full of long, sharp teeth. The pale war cat then blinks languidly at Krazzik and begins cleaning his paw, ignoring his master's words.

Krazzik sighs and stands to his full height and straightening his many pouches hiding tools and other equipment, his wickedly curved falchion shifting on his back as he pulls the straps tight. Despite his easy stance, his eyes carefully study everything around him. Only to anyone intimately familiar with the war cat would see that Zaggra is doing the same.

At Avaline's words, the half-orc gestures towards the stage and nods.

After a moment he asks to no one in particular, "I wonder if any of these merchants would trade me for a bow and some arrows..."

Jabari, was happy to let Avaline obtain the assignment for their group. While shy in the normal circumstances of every day life and discourse, he left that timidity behind when fighting. At six feet tall, he was an imposing presence, with a cascade of muscles rippling down his long, bare back. A leather strap that crossed his ample chest, held the scabbard between his shoulders, containing his prized falchion. He was confident and ready to find some treasure.

Jabari wasn't always so confident. He was the second son of a smithy, and as child he was much larger than the rest of the children and subject to constant teasing. Because of his size, he was slow, and the tormenting children buzzing around him like flies, could always remain just out of reach and flee his wrath. As he got older, he was determined to put his size to good use by training to be a fighter. This was his dream but his family needed him, especially as protection on their trading trips. It was on one such trip that Jabari and his father came across a very old man who had passed out just outside an oasis. The water was presumed to be tainted. They didn't stay to find out. They took the man to the nearest village with a healer who helped the man get well. The man turned out to be a very rich noble who had wandered from his home and gotten lost. His family was very grateful and rewarded the two men handsomely. Now that his father was able to hire a body guard, Jabari asked his father if he could go to one of the cities and learn to be a grappler and compete in festivals for prize money. He argued he would finally have a chance to use his physique and strength and improve as a fighter. His father agreed. Word of the lottery reached him and brought him to Wati, where he met the other members of the group.

Surprised, but pleasantly so, that the group is waving her to approach the stage, Avaline smiles. "Hopefully we get a good assignment. Here goes nothing," she says, and limps her way forward in line to approach the high priestess and her acolytes. Once reaching the front, she will make a proper bow as best she can, holding her staff for support, and await instructions.

The priestess looks up at you from her seat and gestures to the acolyte to her left. He looks at his token, white with a blue hieroglyph, and says, "The Oathbound." The second acolyte turns over his token, blue with a white hieroglyph, and says, "The Tomb of Akhentepi." They hand Avaline the second token with the site name, while the token with your team name is placed in a sacred box; you know that there are three sites in total that you will be assigned. The other two will come later, after the delegates complete their first assignment.

Sebti the Crocodile looks up at you and says, "Pharasma's grace be your light in the dark."

Bennekheb stands near the rest of The Oathbound, her hand resting gently on the pommel of her scimitar. Avaline is a good choice to represent us. I've never had an issue with the Pharasmins, but she seems especially eager. she thinks to herself as her other hand slowly rubs the angelic ankh that hangs by her side.
Sep 23, 2019 5:23 pm
Avaline inclines her head respectfully and pockets the token. "My sincere thanks. Pharasma’s grace be upon you as well.". She starts to turn to go, but looks back over her shoulder. "Perhaps it is too bold of me to ask, and if so, I apologize. Is there anything you can tell me about the Tomb?"

She comes across as humble and sincere, or at least she tries to.

The high priestess Sebti the Crocodile, gives you a measured look telling you she is somewhat unwilling to answer many questions. "Anil I can tell you is that it is an actual tomb that predates the Plague of Madness, and it is located in the city’s original cemetery in the eastern section of the necropolis."
Sep 23, 2019 6:08 pm
Once more, Avaline performs the necessary display of respect, and politely murmurs her thanks. "My compatriots and I are grateful for your wisdom and consideration. I will take up no more of your time," she says, backing calmly away before she turns to go.

Returning to her group, Avaline passes on the information given her by the priestess.
Sep 23, 2019 6:45 pm
Well.... Let's do this. Can I see the token we need to get past the guards? I'm curious...
Cross is happily chatting along while they head for their tomb.
Sep 23, 2019 7:10 pm
Jabari curiously watches all the activity. He stretches to his full height so he can see above the crowd and watch Avaline approach Sebti and the acolytes. He sees her limp between the other adventuring groups and onlookers and finally reach the stage. He feels a little sorry for her but she seems to be taking it in stride, he thinks, and chuckles at his own pun. Once the token is chosen, Jabari feels a flutter of excitement. He turns to his Oathbound compatriots.

Perhaps it is good fortune that the tomb predates the Plague of Madness?

Krazzik follows the others, keeping an eye out for any of the merchants littering the way that might have a bow of some sort that he could barter for and obtain. Zaggra lifts his shaggy head and finally decides to get up, following his master through the crowded area.

"We are to go tomorrow morning, no?"
Sep 24, 2019 12:16 am
Sasha says Yes perhaps in the morning light will be fine. That way we can all get a good breakfast in.
Sep 24, 2019 12:38 am
Avaline happily turns over the token for everyone to see. "It is a good assignment, I think. If we are all equipped for the journey, I think departing in the morning is prudent. We’re finally going to go inside," she says, anticipation tightening her words. "I have waited a long time for this. I know a lot of us have."
Sep 24, 2019 12:53 am
The next morning you arrive. You've paid your custom for your prior night's stay, and packed up all of your belongings for what could potentially be a multi-day trek into the necropolis. You know that you'll be on your own, with no recourse to guard patrols or supply vendors.
[ +- ] The Necropolis Gates
The gates are closed, and at the appointed time, the priests perform a brief ceremony. You hear again the reverence the Pharasmins have for the necropolis, and how reluctant they are for the the place to be treated with anything other than that same reverence. They call upon the adventuring bands to remember their sacred duty, and that anyone caught desecrating or unduly destroying property will have their eligibility withdrawn from future assignments.

When the gates open the various teams enter cautiously, and proceed in one of several directions. You know your assignment is to at the far end, slightly to the left of how you pass through the gates.
How do you proceed? The streets are wide enough for three or four abreast if that is your choice, but give me a base marching order. Also, you can discuss your path, but from the map I will otherwise assume that you will go through 14, head along the road between 2 and 4, toward 26 and then to 23 which is your location.

That looks to be a straight quick path.
