[Gameplay] Part 1: The Lottery & Tomb of Akhentepi

Sep 19, 2019 6:04 pm
TLDR Version

The city of Wati has a giant walled off portion that is a huge necropolis, normally off limits to all but certain members of the church of Pharasma. You are given a tomb to explore with the sanction of the church. You can only explore sites specifically designated for your adventuring party. The first site you are given is called the Tomb of Akhentepi (#23, at top left in map below). You can begin exploring it tomorrow morning after a ceremonial opening of the necropolis gates (#14 on the map).
[ +- ] Map of Wati

Longer Version

The bustling desert city of Wati is near bursting with excitement. Adventurers from every corner of the Inner Sea region have assembled here beneath the hot Osirian sun to explore the tombs of the city’s necropolis, waiting only to be assigned their first sites for exploration. Surrounding the participants, the public has gathered to observe the ceremony as well. There is a festival-like quality in the air, and numerous street vendors are hawking goods and refreshments to participants and spectators alike. Some merchants have even brought what can only be considered adventuring gear to sell as last minute convenience items to explorers, while others advertise that they’ll buy recovered treasures and antiquities from those who visit their establishments.

In front of the imposing edifice of the Grand Mausoleum, an immense awning has been erected between decorated pillars in the market to provide shade for the priests of Pharasma overseeing the lottery. Beneath the awning, two urns sit atop a table elevated a few feet above the ground on a wooden stage constructed for the event. The high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, sits behind the table, while two acolytes confer with her at either side.
[ +- ] Sebti the Crocodile
Numerous adventuring groups stand in small clusters near the stage, made up of multiple nationalities and races. Most keep to themselves, but some teams engage in quiet conversation with other teams, mostly speculating about what they’ll likely face in the necropolis.

The ceremony begins when the high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, rises to her feet and looks over the crowd. Sebti seems surprisingly young to hold such a distinguished position, but she has a confident air of authority. After calling for silence, she begins with an invocation to the Lady of Graves, followed by a brief history of the founding of the necropolis.
[ +- ] History
Sebti concludes by saying the following.

"Let the lottery begin! Although many of you have requested specific sites to explore, we must leave these matters to fate. The Lady of Graves is a far better judge of destiny than we of this mortal sphere. The gates of the necropolis will open at sunrise tomorrow. Use this evening to prepare yourselves for the task ahead. Let these rules guide you in your endeavors in this holy place: remember how this came to pass, every slave’s hut is a memorial, and honor the departed. May you go with the Lady’s blessing."

The priests of the Grand Mausoleum have decided on a lottery to distribute access to the tombs to make the process impartial and subject to the dictates of fate, in keeping with Pharasmin religious tenets. The church has mapped the necropolis and designated selected sites within it for exploration, dividing them into three pools, from the smallest and simplest of structures to the largest and potentially most complex. Each party of explorers is assigned three sites, one at a time, so that a group must complete its exploration of one site before gaining access to another. This process wasn’t intended to simply be arbitrary.

The church also seeks to avoid conflict between groups within the necropolis, the neglect of smaller sites in favor of those that might contain more wealth, and bribery and backroom deals with local officials to gain access to specific structures researched in advance. The Grand Mausoleum is dedicated to remaining neutral throughout the entire affair.

After Sebti returns to her seat, the two acolytes accompanying her each draw a wooden token from one of the urns on the table. The first token identifies the adventuring group, matching the token that group received when it registered for the lottery. The second token determines which tomb is assigned to that group.

A single representative of the chosen group is then summoned to the stage to present the token his group received at registration to one of the acolytes. Once the group’s identity has been confirmed, Sebti shows the representative the location of that group’s first exploration site on a map of the entire necropolis. She also gives the representative a smaller, sketched map that shows the site’s location in relation to the necropolis gates. Once a group has received its assignment, the process repeats with a new group.

When the name of the their group, The Oathbound is called, the PCs should choose a representative to approach the stage and receive their assignment.

Avaline stands with her team, leaning heavily on a stout walking stick that could certainly serve double-duty as a quarterstaff if need be. The aasimar woman wears the plain light robes common to the Osirion region over leather armor, so it's hard to see exactly, but the rest of the team would know her left leg to be both shorter than the right but also twisted unnaturally and consequently lame. Despite the extended time standing in one place undoubtedly causing her some physical discomfort, her expression betrays none of it: she is flushed with the heat but also excitement at the opportunity forthcoming, and her expression is excited, bright-eyed, and a little awestruck.

She turns vivid blue eyes on the rest of the Oathbound, her words tumbling out of her mouth in almost musical tones. "It's almost time. Who's going to go forward and get our assignment? I'd be happy to do it, unless one of you wants to have the honor?"
Sep 19, 2019 9:10 pm
Go ahead dear
Cross gives Avaline a gentle push forward. Cross seems to be a young woman, with a delicate complexion and wispy light blond hair. The breeze is always catching that hair, and it is always in motion. She has several swirling blue tattoos all over her body. She carries a backpack with her essentials, a short bow and a slim sword on her hip.
She loves to smile and laugh, and have been excited for weeks about this opportunity to unearth old mysteries.

She smiles as Cross gives Avaline some incentive. Oh. Yes. Avaline. The stage is all yours.

Sasha "The Little One" is only two feet eight inches tall and 29 pounds soak and wet. She appears to be in her twenty, but it is hard to judge age on a Halfling. She has rich bronze skin and dark brown hair about shoulder length. Her dark green eyes always seem to be watch around her. She is a rather active person and tends not to sit down much.

She has spent years exploring ancient tombs and catacombs of Osirian. She has a nick name as "The Little One" And now explorer a new area. She also know to be a minor spell caster and can sing and dance when she wishes.

She is dressed in leather armor/explorer's outfit and has a short sword to her side. Across her chest is a bandoleer with 3 daggers on it. Off to her side are 2 belt pouches and one rather large belt pouch. She also sports a whip at her side as well. With a backpack and a wineskin on her back she is ready to explore.

Krazzik squats next to his cat, scratching the beast behind the ears as the cat lazily languishes on the ground, panting slightly in the heat. The large half-orc looks comfortable in his light, padded armor. His movements only belay to an experienced eye the violence he is capable of dispensing.

"Zaggra, you lazy beast. You could at least sit or stand for the occasion," he says to an apathetic yawn full of long, sharp teeth. The pale war cat then blinks languidly at Krazzik and begins cleaning his paw, ignoring his master's words.

Krazzik sighs and stands to his full height and straightening his many pouches hiding tools and other equipment, his wickedly curved falchion shifting on his back as he pulls the straps tight. Despite his easy stance, his eyes carefully study everything around him. Only to anyone intimately familiar with the war cat would see that Zaggra is doing the same.

At Avaline's words, the half-orc gestures towards the stage and nods.

After a moment he asks to no one in particular, "I wonder if any of these merchants would trade me for a bow and some arrows..."

Jabari, was happy to let Avaline obtain the assignment for their group. While shy in the normal circumstances of every day life and discourse, he left that timidity behind when fighting. At six feet tall, he was an imposing presence, with a cascade of muscles rippling down his long, bare back. A leather strap that crossed his ample chest, held the scabbard between his shoulders, containing his prized falchion. He was confident and ready to find some treasure.

Jabari wasn't always so confident. He was the second son of a smithy, and as child he was much larger than the rest of the children and subject to constant teasing. Because of his size, he was slow, and the tormenting children buzzing around him like flies, could always remain just out of reach and flee his wrath. As he got older, he was determined to put his size to good use by training to be a fighter. This was his dream but his family needed him, especially as protection on their trading trips. It was on one such trip that Jabari and his father came across a very old man who had passed out just outside an oasis. The water was presumed to be tainted. They didn't stay to find out. They took the man to the nearest village with a healer who helped the man get well. The man turned out to be a very rich noble who had wandered from his home and gotten lost. His family was very grateful and rewarded the two men handsomely. Now that his father was able to hire a body guard, Jabari asked his father if he could go to one of the cities and learn to be a grappler and compete in festivals for prize money. He argued he would finally have a chance to use his physique and strength and improve as a fighter. His father agreed. Word of the lottery reached him and brought him to Wati, where he met the other members of the group.

Surprised, but pleasantly so, that the group is waving her to approach the stage, Avaline smiles. "Hopefully we get a good assignment. Here goes nothing," she says, and limps her way forward in line to approach the high priestess and her acolytes. Once reaching the front, she will make a proper bow as best she can, holding her staff for support, and await instructions.
Sep 20, 2019 10:40 pm
The priestess looks up at you from her seat and gestures to the acolyte to her left. He looks at his token, white with a blue hieroglyph, and says, "The Oathbound." The second acolyte turns over his token, blue with a white hieroglyph, and says, "The Tomb of Akhentepi." They hand Avaline the second token with the site name, while the token with your team name is placed in a sacred box; you know that there are three sites in total that you will be assigned. The other two will come later, after the delegates complete their first assignment.

Sebti the Crocodile looks up at you and says, "Pharasma's grace be your light in the dark."
Sep 21, 2019 2:59 am
Bennekheb stands near the rest of The Oathbound, her hand resting gently on the pommel of her scimitar. Avaline is a good choice to represent us. I've never had an issue with the Pharasmins, but she seems especially eager. she thinks to herself as her other hand slowly rubs the angelic ankh that hangs by her side.
Sep 23, 2019 5:23 pm
Avaline inclines her head respectfully and pockets the token. "My sincere thanks. Pharasma’s grace be upon you as well.". She starts to turn to go, but looks back over her shoulder. "Perhaps it is too bold of me to ask, and if so, I apologize. Is there anything you can tell me about the Tomb?"

She comes across as humble and sincere, or at least she tries to.

The high priestess Sebti the Crocodile, gives you a measured look telling you she is somewhat unwilling to answer many questions. "Anil I can tell you is that it is an actual tomb that predates the Plague of Madness, and it is located in the city’s original cemetery in the eastern section of the necropolis."
Sep 23, 2019 6:08 pm
Once more, Avaline performs the necessary display of respect, and politely murmurs her thanks. "My compatriots and I are grateful for your wisdom and consideration. I will take up no more of your time," she says, backing calmly away before she turns to go.

Returning to her group, Avaline passes on the information given her by the priestess.
Sep 23, 2019 6:45 pm
Well.... Let's do this. Can I see the token we need to get past the guards? I'm curious...
Cross is happily chatting along while they head for their tomb.
Sep 23, 2019 7:10 pm
Jabari curiously watches all the activity. He stretches to his full height so he can see above the crowd and watch Avaline approach Sebti and the acolytes. He sees her limp between the other adventuring groups and onlookers and finally reach the stage. He feels a little sorry for her but she seems to be taking it in stride, he thinks, and chuckles at his own pun. Once the token is chosen, Jabari feels a flutter of excitement. He turns to his Oathbound compatriots.

Perhaps it is good fortune that the tomb predates the Plague of Madness?
Sep 23, 2019 7:21 pm
Krazzik follows the others, keeping an eye out for any of the merchants littering the way that might have a bow of some sort that he could barter for and obtain. Zaggra lifts his shaggy head and finally decides to get up, following his master through the crowded area.

"We are to go tomorrow morning, no?"
Sep 24, 2019 12:16 am
Sasha says Yes perhaps in the morning light will be fine. That way we can all get a good breakfast in.
Sep 24, 2019 12:38 am
Avaline happily turns over the token for everyone to see. "It is a good assignment, I think. If we are all equipped for the journey, I think departing in the morning is prudent. We’re finally going to go inside," she says, anticipation tightening her words. "I have waited a long time for this. I know a lot of us have."
Sep 24, 2019 12:53 am
The next morning you arrive. You've paid your custom for your prior night's stay, and packed up all of your belongings for what could potentially be a multi-day trek into the necropolis. You know that you'll be on your own, with no recourse to guard patrols or supply vendors.
[ +- ] The Necropolis Gates
The gates are closed, and at the appointed time, the priests perform a brief ceremony. You hear again the reverence the Pharasmins have for the necropolis, and how reluctant they are for the the place to be treated with anything other than that same reverence. They call upon the adventuring bands to remember their sacred duty, and that anyone caught desecrating or unduly destroying property will have their eligibility withdrawn from future assignments.

When the gates open the various teams enter cautiously, and proceed in one of several directions. You know your assignment is to at the far end, slightly to the left of how you pass through the gates.
How do you proceed? The streets are wide enough for three or four abreast if that is your choice, but give me a base marching order. Also, you can discuss your path, but from the map I will otherwise assume that you will go through 14, head along the road between 2 and 4, toward 26 and then to 23 which is your location.
Sep 24, 2019 3:56 am
OOC:
That looks to be a straight quick path.
Sep 24, 2019 12:43 pm
Bennekheb waits for the others to proceed first through the gates, choosing to linger near the rear of their column where she can observe their position and provide protection from behind.
Sep 24, 2019 12:47 pm
Despite his apparent laziness the day before, Zaggra moves forward slightly ahead of Krazzik as the half-orc takes a forward position in the group. The war cat seems to inherently know when it's time to focus as the Oathbound move into the necropolis, his demeanor going from aloof and noisy to quiet and deadly in the span of a heartbeat.
OOC:
Krazzik will take a spot at the front of the group with Zaggra slightly ahead (5 foot gap between the cat and the frontline) and center (see below). Both will be actively looking for threats, be it adversaries, traps, dangerous ruins, etc.

You pass quickly through the first square, around Pharasma's Needle, and into the streets.
[ +- ] Pharasmas Needle
Deeper into the necropolis, passing decrepit buildings in largely good repair despite the centuries, but obviously worn by weather, you come across a group of priests. They hail you in the street as you approach.

"Hail, adventurers. Do you have your token?" They eye you suspiciously, but not hostilely. You can tell that they're checking your gear and belongings, but for what, isn't apparent.

Avaline nods to Krazzik and digs in the pocket she'd stored the token in. "Come with me, please?" she whispers back to Krazzik as she moves forward to show the token to the priests. She doesn't move particularly fast on any day, but those familiar with her limping gait likely notice that she's in no hurry to approach, and lets Krazzik stay slightly in front of her.

You soon arrive at the Tomb.

A rectangular stone mausoleum sits alone in what appears to have once been an actual cemetery. The trunks of a few dead trees poke out of the sand around the tomb, and a hot breeze whistles through their desiccated branches. A set of massive stone double doors is affixed to the northern side of the structure, beneath a facade bearing the likeness of an Osirian man. Windblown sand is heaped around the crypt, partially burying the doors that lead within.
Sep 25, 2019 12:45 am
Sasha smiles. Well we are here. Lets get out of the sun. She moves over to the doors and takes out her small shortsword and tries to clear away some sand from the doors so she can get a better look at them.
Sep 25, 2019 1:18 am
Jabari looks around, taking in the huge mausoleum doors and the sand at the bottom. Then he walks over to the dead trees around the tomb, bends down and cups some of the sand away from the bottom of the stumps.

Hmmph, he grunts, and then walks back over to the doors.

Has anyone any ideas on how to get in? The doors look pretty solid.

He finishes what Sasha started and scuffs more sand away from the doors with his boots, creating a little cloud of shimmering sand particles in the sun.

Those trees may have have roots going under the tomb. Perhaps that could be a way in.

Jabari determines that the doors are on concealed hinges and swing outward. There are telltale traces of mortar along the seams and jamb that has since crumbled or been chipped away - this tomb was meant to be sealed permanently and not reopened. He also finds sings of a crowbar or something similar has been inserted between the doors at some point.

Opening the doors will require first moving all the sand away, which will take about an hour of sweaty work. Then you'll need to strong arm it open, which will be easier if you have a crowbar.

Clarificiation: It doesn't say on the tomb that he died before the Plague of Madness, but having listened to a number of speeches from the priests recently, you know that the death date listed is 11 years before the Plague of Madness.

Krazzik doesn't think he can bypass the door.

Avaline studies the situation, taking in the opinions of those that have searched the doors. "Sounds like maybe we don't have much choice other than to start digging, then."

She lifts her walking stick slightly. "I'm not much help shoveling, but I can certainly go in search of something to pry the doors open when time comes. Unless one of you brought a crowbar. I'm fresh out."

So you spend an hour digging? If so then you'll need to make strength checks to open the door. Recall the Assist rules. Choose who is the main strengthenator, and two can assist them. In fact, two doors, so two can try at the same time. DC 10 to assist, and if successful, you give the main strengthifier +2 to their check. A crowbar would provide a significant reduction in the DC, but it is still possible without.

After clearing the sand, Krazzik and Jabari make quick work of the doors. Working in concert, their muscles straining in the hot sun, they pull it open, inch by inch (they open outwards). It takes about two minutes to open it wide enough that the largest of you can pass through.

This rectangular room is empty save for some engravings and fixtures upon the walls, a pair of heavy stone doors to the north, and an immense stone wheel against the south wall. The air is stale, and a layer of dust and sand covers the floor, lying in a thicker layer to the south. All four walls bear sunk-relief engravings and hieroglyphs, while small stone faces are affixed to the walls at about shoulder height in each corner. The stone wheel to the south is engraved with a large spiral and is set in stone tracks in the floor and ceiling.

Sasha cannot attack and Disengage, that's a 5e action I think, unless there is a class feature I'm forgetting. She can take a 5 foot step away for sure. It is an extraordinarily large scorpion with a translucent carapace. Its internal organs are visible, but only just through its bare opacity.

I think that would be wise. Ok then. Let's all of us give it a shove.
Oct 2, 2019 6:35 pm
Sasha says as she glance out the door, Lets get back to business. Not that she moves to try to heave the stone wheel away.
Oct 2, 2019 6:44 pm
Working together, for of you can move the stone (taking 20, DC 28). The stone wheel which weighs almost three tons, slowly rolls to the side.

This square room is starkly devoid of any markings or adornment. In the center of the chamber’s floor, a square shaft drops straight down into darkness. A faint musty odor rises from the pit. A single piton has been hammered into the stone floor by the northeast corner of the pit, and a dusty length of rope dangles from the piton into the darkness of the shaft.

The shaft is about ten feet across.
Oct 2, 2019 6:55 pm
Krazzik moves over to the piton and rope and examines them to see if they are relatively new compared to the tomb. "This is curious, why would there be a rope and anchor point already here?"
Oct 2, 2019 6:59 pm
The rope appears to have been cut 5' down. The shaft is sixty feet deep and the sides look pretty smooth.

The rope is very rotted.
Oct 2, 2019 6:59 pm
At the doorway, That does seem curious for sure. Not sure I like that thought.

Glancing to the shaft, You think it is a death fall for sure?
Oct 2, 2019 7:18 pm
Jabari peers down into the hole, wrinkling his nose at the smell.
Seems that way. The rope must have broke. There is probably something or somethings at the bottom of that. Tomb robbers I expect.
Oct 2, 2019 7:26 pm
Cross, opens her pack, find a torch and lights it. Then she drops it down into the shaft.
Without riding the wind down, you would break more than just your leg.

Cross examines the shaft and the piton, and basically does her very best in securing the climbing arrangements. She lowers a fresh rope into the shaft from her climbing kit.

Are we sure we don't need a crowbar and a shovel before we go down?
Oct 2, 2019 7:56 pm
The torch bounces a few times, rolls to the side a bit, and burns on the floor. You see nothing revealed but get the sense from the light texture that the chamber below is similar in size to the one you're in at the top.
Oct 2, 2019 8:13 pm
You know I really want to explore now that we have the way open. Crowbar and shovel might be handy.
Oct 2, 2019 8:20 pm

Mirrored images of a warrior in side profile, facing inward, are carved on an ornate pair of stone doors in the west wall of this square room. The figure is depicted wearing padded armor, with a scarab-shaped shield on the arm facing the viewer, and a raised khopesh held aloft in the other. A crumpled humanoid body lies directly in front of the doors. A hint of decay hangs in the air, and a dried stain mars the stone floor under the body. A square shaft in the ceiling leads straight up into darkness.

Avaline is by no means quick or particularly good at climbing down. She ties her walking stick tightly to her pack and slowly makes her way down. A quick check tells you what is obvious to Sasha. He is mostly skeletal and you need flesh to survive. You have time to take 20 while the others descend, so:

The body in front of the doors is mostly skeletal, with a thin layer of desiccated tissue. Sasha can identify the body as that of a male human or half-elf who obviously died down here. Both of the body’s legs are broken from a fall from a great height, and the unfortunate man apparently crawled to the doors before he expired.

The doors are unlocked and open easily, although they are somewhat heavy. Beyond, the walls of this ten-foot-wide corridor feature bas-relief carvings of great battles. Armies with spears and shields clash at the direction of generals, whill other leaders direct troops from chariots that are ruthlessly overrunning their enemies. Engraved stone double doors stand at the far end of the hallway.

The engravings on the 'inside' of this hallway resemble those in the previous room, except Akhentepi is depicted as an older man riding in a chariot. He carries the same scarab shield, but his other arm points at his own reflected depiction on the opposite door.

Sasha and Jabari know roughly where the trap occurred. You can spend 2 minutes to take 20 to find out precisely where the trigger is.

Note: you cannot take 20 on a disable device check as there are potential consequences for failure.

That should do it. She says as she scuttles back to the party. Appears she wasn't willing to be the one to test her skills.
Oct 6, 2019 7:48 pm
Not that I don't trust your skill Sasha, but can't we just step around the trigger?

Mindful of the triggers, cross scribbles some notes about Akhentepi and his scarab shield.

She says with confidence, Shouldn't matter one way or the other now. Lets get some strong hands on that stone door. Probably difficult like most.

The doors open easily.

A faded tapestry hangs on a wooden frame on the western wall of this chamber. Faded and delicate, the tapestry depicts a middle-aged man, accompanied by a woman and two children, with a small estate in the background. To either side of the tapestry are two small pedestals, upon which sit two dead and preserved animals. Stone double doors exit the chamber to the north, south, and east, east being the way you entered.
Oct 7, 2019 3:36 pm
Stepping up next Krazzik to view the room, she says as she motions to the north and south, He does have a nice place here. Question is to go that way or this way?
Oct 7, 2019 3:42 pm
Jabari was glad to see the door opened easily without his help as he was tending to his wounds. He removed each dart carefully but not without some degree of pain, although you wouldn't have seen any reaction on his face.
Oct 7, 2019 6:05 pm
Avaline walks past Jabari as he pulls darts out. She puts a hand lightly on the big man's forearm. "Are you all right?" she asks, looking up at his face with a clinical eye. "I... can help, if you're in pain?" she offers, a little tentative.
Oct 7, 2019 6:31 pm
Sasha calls back, He took a dart too. Painful for sure. Unlike me, I guess he is too proud to take assistance.
Oct 7, 2019 7:12 pm
Jabari swallows his pride. I have a feeling that we all will need to be as close to full strength as possible if we are to succeed down here. I will take any assistance to get me back to fighting strength
Oct 7, 2019 7:19 pm

"Any thoughts on which way to go next? Some accounts I've read of people exploring places like this suggest always going in the same direction, which makes it easy to remember how to get back..."

She idly looks over the tapestry as she speaks.

A brightly painted chariot sits in the center of this chamber. Beyond the chariot, a large canvas stretches between two stone columns. The skins of several animals—antelopes, great cats, and crocodiles—now faded and deteriorated with age, are tacked to this canvas. A wooden chest, lacquered white and trimmed with gold inlay, sits in the southeast corner. In each corner of the room a small stone shield is molded into the masonry at shoulder height. An open hallway leads to the east, and a set of stone double doors leads south the way you came.

Cross doesn't detect any magic in the first chamber.

Cross is unable to find any traps on the chest, but he doesn't really know how to look for them.

The chariot creaks alarmingly as Jabari puts his weight on it, indicating that it will likely collapse if he fully enters.

Sasha fights off the poison, disables the trap and unlocks the chest.

The chest is beautiful, and if undamaged, is worth xxx gp as an art piece (including the trap, which can be reset). The chest contains two potions of cure light wounds and one potion of darkvision. Also inside the chest are two books with thin, gold-plated metal sheets for pages. The first is a brief biography of Akhentepi, and the second is a list and description of the various military campaigns conducted by the nation of Osirion between 2350 and 2450 ar. Each book weighs 25 pounds and is worth xxx gp.

The discussion of healing potions draws Avaline's ear. "Please let me try something before you use potions we cannot get back," she says, holding up a hand to forestall any objections.

In any case, she smiles at Sasha and Jabari. "But. I am happy I could help."

Beyond the chariot display is a short hallway, and then another chamber.

Four funerary masks hang on one wall of the short hallway, staring down as if in judgement at anyone standing in the corridor.

A Knowledge (Religion) check might reveal more about the masks.

Beyond the hallway, you see a table displaying a three-dimensional diorama occupying much of the north side of the room (i.e., to your left). Three shields with different designs are displayed upon a rack against the far wall, while various weapons hang from another rack along the south wall (your right). Arrayed around the room are five small chests and a clay urn.

As the tiny doll pieces scatter to the sides of the room from the force of her blow, you take a breather. The Grease will dissipate within a minute, so you take the time to review the room. Sasha notices that the chests are sealed with wax.

We can carry them out as is, break the seal outside

Lets move on. There was a door...
Oct 27, 2019 5:16 am
Avaline nods. "Somewhere safer than this place, perhaps. Though I hate to think that there might be something useful inside that we're missing," she says, musing thoughtfully.

She crouches down next to one of the chests, lays her fingers lightly on the wax. "We could melt it, perhaps? Hold a torch nearby?"
Oct 27, 2019 7:18 am
It is wax, you could probably peel it off with a fingernail or dagger or sharp stone.

Jabari removes his knife from its sheath.

Here... allow me to remove these.. Then he proceeds to whittle the seals away.
Oct 27, 2019 5:54 pm
Treasure: Most of the arms and armor on the racks are mundane items, but Akhentepi’s khopesh and spear are both masterwork weapons. The composite shortbow is still serviceable, but its string has deteriorated, and must be replaced before the weapon can be used. The scarab-shaped steel shield is a magic shield.

The chests are of good craftsmanship but less ornate than the one found in the room with the chariot. None of the chests are locked or trapped, but each has been sealed with wax. They contain a sack with a 100 gp and 42 sp, and several scroll tubes holding papyrus records, private memos, expense ledgers, speeches, and private correspondence. Among the papers are discussions regarding the unfinished tomb of Akhentepi’s mistress. There is little else of interest in the papers, but to a collector or Osirionologist, these documents are worth 250 gp total if undamaged. The clay urn is also sealed with wax and contains nard, an expensive, oily perfume, worth 75 gp.
Oct 27, 2019 6:13 pm
Sasha holds no interest in the weapons as they are obviously too large for her effectively handle as well as the shields. She is highly interested in the papers. Winks. As well as gold and such. This room is great. Well worth the fight. She obviously has not any problem at all with tomb raiding. Generally speaking Little Sasha isn't really great about carrying anything.

A massive mirror stretches across the southern wall of this chamber, flanked by two statues. The statue to the east depicts a tall, gaunt woman in a flowing, hooded gown, holding an hourglass. The figure to the west is that of a jackal-headed man carrying a scepter or staff in his hand. Stone double doors, standing slightly ajar, lead to the east and west. A third set of double doors exits the room to the north. Torch holders sculpted in the shape of bird skulls are built in each corner, and a thin layer of dust covers every surface.

Jabari's eyes light up as he is drawn to the weapons. Picking up the bow and glancing at it at different angles, he proclaims, This is a good bow. It would be worth fixing if anyone has some spare string.

Placing it gently on the ground he examines the rest of the weapons and removes the sac of gold and silver pieces. Very nice. And the spear and khopesh are of master workmanship! We have found some good treasure my friends!

The door was slightly ajar, and opens easily. A flight of steps gradually descends to the west down this passage. Halfway down the stairs, small holes and burrowed tunnels riddle what remains of the passage’s southern wall. Earth and sand have spilled over the collapsed masonry, covering the stairs with dirt and rubble. Stone doors engraved with a golden scarab, its wings open beneath a golden sun, stand at either end of the stairs.

Dec 6, 2019 8:41 pm
Avaline shakes her head. "I don't think we're getting through this way. Let's go down the stairs and see what we find."
Dec 6, 2019 9:50 pm
As you go down the stairs, giant beetles come out burrows in the rocky wall, and attack aggressively.

Past the mining beetles the tomb is unfinished and end. There are small beetle tunnels, but only something the size of a house cat could get through.

Your choices:
- smash through the secret door noisily
- go to the last room, then up through the other doors, or
- go through the doors on the other side of the creepy mirror room
Dec 22, 2019 10:18 pm
Jabari being a smashing things kind of guy wants to do just that. Smash through the secret door noisily.
Dec 23, 2019 4:33 pm
Sasha looks well spent as she desperately kills the beetle, but revives greatly with Avaline's touch. Your a blessing.

Let us explore an other place. Feeling fully revived, Sasha is ready for more action. She will head to the last room, then up through the other doors there.

The doors north open stiffly. Stairs lead to more doors, then more stairs and a third set of doors. You find no traps and they're all unlocked.

The center of this large octagonal room is a raised square platform a few inches above the floor, with a stone pillar at each corner. A gold-trimmed sarcophagus sits in the center of the platform, flanked by two statues of humanoid beings with canine heads, each of which holds an ankh in one of its crossed arms. Stone double doors exit the room to the north and south.

One of you is detecting magic as a rule, so Sasha would be forewarned that the far door, and the sarcophagus, are both magical in some similar way.
Dec 31, 2019 4:24 pm
Sasha says as she stands posted at the far doors, Trap activated by the sarcophagus? She begins hunting for a trap.

Ah I see. Yes. Sasha feel unsafe here. She would like to take more time in the search. As she has warranting that there is a very good possibility of a trap. She is hunting hard as she can.
Dec 31, 2019 4:50 pm
After a few minutes scanning the door, Sasha can find no trigger for a trap, but after carefully scanning the sarcophagus area, she determined that the sarcophagus platform itself is a pressure trap. She isn't sure what it would do, but it looks complicated.
Dec 31, 2019 4:56 pm
Sasha calls to the others as she completes her examination of the area, The sarcrophagus platform has a trap pressure plate. Looks like it could be bad.

Jan 1, 2020 9:09 pm

Disable

Rolls

Disable Device - (1d20+8)

(12) + 8 = 20

Jan 4, 2020 5:15 pm
Sasha determines that there is no way to disable this device, save for not putting pressure on the entire center platform the sarcophagus is on. Maybe some kind of improbably acrobatic rope based balancing act?
OOC:
In the interests of moving this along, I'll assume you all take the full time necessary (taking 20 on every 5' of wall and floor) to search the untrapped areas of the room.
You find two secret doors, to the left and right, and a movable torch bracket, that when pulled down, clicks something, although there is no obvious effect.
Jan 4, 2020 5:19 pm
With inability to easily disable the trap. Sasha is happy to find other ways out of her in her search. She will try the left Secret door and see what lies behind it. She does tell the others about the right one and the Torch Bracket Lever that she activated with no idea what it did.
Jan 4, 2020 5:25 pm
That space is also trapped with a pressure plate. That was sort of mentioned earlier but I'll remind you now. You're not sure if the pressure plate has been deactivated by the torch, although that would make sense.
Jan 4, 2020 5:34 pm
OOC:
Okay I seem to have forgotten that about the pressure plate. Sasha will look to the right secret door instead.
Jan 4, 2020 5:42 pm
This small room is filled with human-shaped bundles wrapped in linen. Each wears a small medallion around its neck. There are no other obvious exits.

Knowledge History or Religion might tell you more.
Jan 4, 2020 6:40 pm
Jabari carefully approaches one of the bundles and slowly draws his large fingers around the medallion. He is tempted to unroll a bundle too, but thinks better of it.

Rolls

untrained knowledge history - (1d20)

(13) = 13

Jan 4, 2020 7:03 pm
The medallions are symbols to Pharasma, you've seen her symbol often enough to recognize it. As to the purpose of the bundles, well, they're wrapped bodies it seems. As to why, Jabari is bereft of the knowing.
Jan 4, 2020 8:42 pm
See that is in no way forward Sasha will go to the pressure plate to the left secret door and try to disable it so as to easily open the secret door.

Rolls

Disable device - (1d20+9)

(9) + 9 = 18

Jan 4, 2020 9:43 pm
Sasha doesn't think it's currently activated.
Jan 6, 2020 5:27 pm
She just the same tries to open the secret door without stepping on the plate and if she can't then she will take her sword and activate the plate from being beside it and hope the trap doesn't get her. Lookout I'm going take for the secret door.
Jan 6, 2020 5:45 pm
It's too far to reach, but triggering the plate doesn't seem to do anything at this time.
Jan 6, 2020 6:08 pm
OOC:
Blame my life and vacation induced absence, but... am I reading right that there are multiple pressure plates around the room?
Jan 6, 2020 6:17 pm
Does Sasha mange to open the left secret door then?
Jan 6, 2020 6:48 pm
Yes, Sasha is able to open the doors, which open revealing a room the same size as the one with the linen wrapped bodies, but this room has double doors at the far side. After examining the doors, you don't think they're locked or trapped.

Beyond those doors, the corridor stretches further then turns to the right, down a set of stairs which end at more doors.
Jan 6, 2020 7:05 pm
Sasha says to the other This is the way to go I think and she enters into the room and crosses to the double doors. There she waits for the others.
Jan 10, 2020 1:47 am
Jabari follows. I think you are right Sasha.
Jan 13, 2020 1:37 am
Google Slide Map updated

You move to the top of the stairs, watching for more trapped flagstones or trip wires or some other kind of insidious device.

Bennekheb seems to notice something and on examination, there are signs of a secret door on the south wall at the top of the stairs down. The stairs themselves seem to be untrapped, the doors at the bottom similarly untrapped and unlocked.

Rolls

Secret Roll

Jan 13, 2020 5:19 pm
Sasha will take interest in that secret door and check it out. If good she open it. She is taking her time about open it as she really does suspect it is trapped.
Jan 13, 2020 5:46 pm
The secret opens and you find a narrow rough tunnel. The inside of the secret door is obvious that it is a door.

In contrast to the rest of the tomb, this rough earthen passage is not lined with masonry. At various points along the tunnel, sections of the walls have crumbled, as if something had dug small tunnels in the walls that subsequently collapsed.

This tunnel turns twice and ends at the secret door that Jabari wanted to smash through. Again, it is obvious on the inside-side how to open it, and that first one can only be opened from the secret side.

There is nothing of interest in the tunnel, nor any explanation for why it exists.
Jan 13, 2020 5:53 pm
Quick thoughts seem to indicate that the possibly trapped double doors in the other room is the only way forward. I can only see one way forward. She retreats back to the double doors and awaits the party to get there.
Jan 13, 2020 6:22 pm
There are the doors at the bottom of the stairs by you (see top left of map for an unexplored room), the trapped double door, or a pair of double doors back in the mirror room.
Jan 14, 2020 7:37 pm
Hmm. I will check the room below here for secret door and such before tackling the possible trapped doors. She turns and heads down the stairs carefully the bottom room. She is overly careful here. She like to take the time and do a fine tooth combing of the room for goods, traps, and possible secret doors.
Jan 15, 2020 12:41 am
This room holds several neatly arrayed chests, boxes, and urns. The dust of centuries covers every surface. The only exit is a set of stone double doors to the south.

There is a magical trap on the middle of the right hand wall. Sasha, without touching it, is able to determine that spot is also a secret door.

The items in the room are funerary goods, meant to accompany Akhentepi to the afterlife. Some of it had obviously spoiled but but among the spoiled and ruined grave goods are several salvageable items of value, including two vials of silversheen, a masterwork longbow, 10 cold iron arrows, a gold scarab clasp worth 50 gp, an onyx and silver holy symbol of Pharasma worth 100 gp, a silver hand mirror worth 35 gp, and a wax-sealed clay urn of nard worth 75 gp.
Jan 15, 2020 2:04 am
Jabari wouldn't admit it out loud but he liked being behind Sasha because of her trap finding abilities. And now it seems the threats would be worth it. Such bounteous treasure awaited them!
Jan 15, 2020 6:10 pm
Sashsa would hand off the goods to Jabari to carry as obviously weight is her enemy. There is a magical trap in front of that secret door. she says points out the secret door. Perhaps we can try to throw something at it to activate it at a distance as I'm not sure I can deal with it being magical.
Jan 15, 2020 6:29 pm
Sasha could attempt to disarm it. Failure by too much or a margin may set it off so you can't take 20.
Jan 17, 2020 8:25 pm

Swarm has taken 7 damage and is on fire from one of the Alchemists Fire (saved one, failed the other reflex save).

Avaline is up, then I'll roll for Bennekheb.

Rolls

Reflex saves - (2d20)

Avaline tries add a little extra fire, now that the alchemist's fire is doing its job. She waves her torch at the bugs.

Feb 5, 2020 5:09 am
Avaline misses any concentration of the fast moving roaches.

Bennekheb fires another fire bolt... But misses.

The swarm surrounds Bennekheb.

You're all up again. Sasha can also roll more damage from one of the Alchemists Fire.

Swarm has taken 7 damage and is on fire from one of the Alchemists Fire (saved one, failed the other reflex save).

Critical! Double damage! Alchemists Fire!

With the 7 damage done already, that is 26 fire damage total so far (being generous with the torch damage, sure, but I'm okay with that) eliminates the threat of the swarm.

Sasha slumps next a wall. We got them. She appears to be very badly injured (1 HP left)
Feb 8, 2020 5:34 pm
Some of you are fairly beat up, and you're undoubtedly begging low on spells. Did you want to rest for the remainder of the day?

Feb 13, 2020 3:14 am
You rest for the remainder of the day and night.

Bennekheb will try to make a heal check for Long Term Care, you might get extra hp back. You each regain 2 hp, and 2 points of ability damage if you've suffered any. You can regain your spells.

Bennekheb is at 5/9 and out of first level spells

With the trap foiled now. Sasha will try to open the secret door.
Feb 18, 2020 5:27 pm
The secret opens to a long purpose built tunnel. Give feet wide and 40 feet long, it ends in a door.

Traveling the length, Sasha detects no traps or secret doors, including finding no traps on the far door.
Feb 18, 2020 5:29 pm
Sasha doesn't expect anything living here so she doesn't listen to the door. She instead tries to open it discretely. To view what is beyond. She does after the rest of the group assembles behind her.

A sarcophagus covered in gold leaf rests on a raised stone platform in the center of this chamber. The casket’s cover is carved the likeness of an adult man with his arms crossed over his chest, and covered in thick coat of dust. Two ornate chests sit beyond the dais in the northeast and southeast corners, and between them stand two large funerary urns. The sole exit is a door to the west.

I say we rifle through those pretty chests!
Feb 25, 2020 6:09 pm
Avaline lets out a quiet sigh and chuckles at Jabari. "And when the giant bugs come spilling out of this one, don't you come running to me to push your guts back inside your body," she says, but her eyes twinkle at the thought of what secrets might be hidden inside the chests.

For her part, she wanders toward the sarcophagus to see what information she can glean from it.

Avaline finds nothing really intriguing about this room. It is Akhentepi's final resting place, and the celebration of his life and career were performed in the rest of the tomb. Aww here we go again. Out comes the falchion which is starting to look pretty grimy at this point, having not been cleaned since arrival in the tomb.

Treasure: The gold leaf decorating the sarcophagus is worth a total of 100 gp, if enough time is spent to salvage all of it. Inside the sarcophagus, Akhentepi’s mummified corpse wears an exquisitely crafted gold funerary mask worth 500 gp. One of the chests contains Akhentepi’s armor, the magic suit of padded armor he wore in life. The other chest holds a disintegrating cloth sack filled with 500 gp, as well as a small, well-preserved darkwood coffer worth 50 gp. Inside the coffer is a potion of darkvision, a potion of lesser restoration, an ornate lapis and carnelian pendant worth 70 gp, and an assortment of carnelian, lapis lazuli, and turquoise semiprecious stones worth a total of 55 gp.
