For my ability SFX, I'm not sure whether it needs to be rolled for or not:

This sounds like I don't have to roll but I'm not sure if that is just to
activate and if in order to actually
affect the opponent, there needs to be a roll.

A few Special Effects allow you to affect a lot of people at once. We call this a sweep effect. When this happens, you’re forcing everybody in the area to make a Test. Roll your own dice (including the Ablity die) instead of Trouble. Each affected character must win the Test to avoid the outcome, which is usually Stress.
This is the closest thing I can find but it only concerns effects that target multiple people. I would assume targeting a single person works the same but I'm not sure.
