Part 1: Happy Hour

Aditi kneels down next to the dead man. "No, no, no!", she mutters. Just to make sure, she checks his pulse and breath but she already knows the results. Defeated, she stands back up and announces: "He's dead."
Jan 16, 2020 1:58 pm
Zoey spares a glance toward Aditi and gives her a look of sympathy. She takes the device from Tam. "What the hell?"
OOC:
Is there a Knowledge check I can try to identify it or get some more details about it? Or is this something I'm supposed to read with a pad?

Aditi - as you quickly check Simon over for vital signs you note two unusual things. On his belt is an SEA (Space Elevator Authority) ID badge with Simon's photo but identifies him as "Systems Analyst First Class Borgman Jones" and he also has a strange looking comm device that seems a bit more elaborate than a normal PAD.

OOC:
Zoey can tell at a glance that it's a memchip (think of it like a USB Flash/Pen hard drive). In order to see what's on it she would either need to use a PAD or her Portable Rig but down an alley at the back of the bar probably isn't the best place to start looking at it.

Whilst the rest of you are puzzling over the situation Tam drags the thugs together and quickly restrains them all with a few snap-locks. Hearing Aditi pronounce Simon dead Tam swears profusely before turning to the rest of you "Look, we made quite a bit of noise here so I expect the NAPD are already on there way. I can probably spin this that I took these guys down after they offed Simon hoping there'd be an outstanding warrant on at least one or two of them but the rest of you should make yourself scarce pretty quickly....well, unless you can think of anything to ask these fuckers before you ghost it that is"
Jan 20, 2020 2:34 pm
"What do you two, think?" Zoey asks Aditi and Mila. "You want to dig into this? I'll come along for the ride if so. Otherwise, I left half a beer back at that bar."
Jan 20, 2020 3:14 pm
"I'm not sure it'll be that easy", Aditi replies. She shows the badge she found on "Simon". "What do you think of this?"
Jan 20, 2020 5:57 pm
"By the looks of things," Mila says, glancing from the dead body to the thugs, "we're in this whether we like it or not, so we might as well figure out exactly what kind of a hole we're in." She glances at the badge before passing it to Zoey. "But we'd better get out of here like Tam says. I don't want to have to have a conversation with the NAPD about this." She shrugs and shoots Tam an apologetic look. "Thanks, I owe you a few beers next time."
Jan 20, 2020 6:40 pm
Aditi quickly joins Mila. She more than most should not be found here. If NAPD starts questioning her, it wouldn't take them long to figure out who she really is and then she would be in a whole lot of trouble.
"Yes, let's quickly go back inside before they show up!", she agrees. The others can definitely tell that she's pretty nervous and eager to get out of here.
Jan 20, 2020 7:21 pm
Zoey startles at the sight of the badge. "This guy works for SEA? Or, used to? Much as I hate those bastards for firing me, I think you two are right. Let's get out of here. We can head to my place, unless one of you lives closer."
OOC:
Figure Zoey probably lives within a reasonable distance since she used to work at the beanstalk. Also, she doesn't know about "Simon's" weird PAD, or else she'd suggest snagging it, too.

You quickly discuss things amongst yourselves and come to the conclusion that heading back into the bar or to any of your apartments might not be the best idea. You head a bit away and duck off the street into a Happy Panda Noodle Bar. Inside the brightly lit chain restaurant, the proprietor dishes up steaming bowls of what charitably could be considered ramen, then seeing your faces, moves down the bar to give you some privacy. You duck into a booth and take a second to catch your breaths whilst Zoey plugs the memchip into her portable rig and begins studying it.

OOC:
Just to make it clear the ID badge has a different name on to that which you know him as so either he was giving everyone a false name or the ID badge is suspect

"Looks like some sort of program. Pretty messy code. Let me see if I can't figure out what it does..."
OOC:
If this wasn't already part of the information Zoey could glean, can the 4 advantage let her isolate some identifying marks in the code that would help us pinpoint its creator(s)? Things like commented-out names or so on.

Total: 2 Success, 4 Advantage

Zoey quickly works through the code and although there is an annoying lack of commenting throughout it soon becomes quite clear why it seemed familiar as she finds the program was created by the SEA and is designed to run on the SEA’s systems.

For the advantages - As with any large project it is obvious several people were involved with writing this program and Zoey is pretty sure at least some of it was written by a programmer she is somewhat familiar with, Jane Tompkins. It is clear the code is very complex and would have been a nightmare to program. At this point Zoey realise she has gleaned everything she can from the memchip here. The only other place that she can think of to get any further information would need access to SEA's internal systems.
OOC:
Hope that's ok for the Advantages. Just as a reminder Zoey has access to the "Corporate Drone" talent which may come in handy here

Zoey glowers at the code. "This is the kind of shit they always made us write when I was at SEA. This is definitely some SEA shit right here." But then she perks up. "But you see this here?" She turns her rig around so the others can see. "The way there's always an extra space after the commas in the FIND commands?" Greeted with blank stares, Zoey rolls here eyes. "Look, I know the chick who wrote this part. Chick named Jane Tompkins. She owes me for setting her up with this dude named Damiano she was into. Anyway, maybe we can hit her up for some help."
OOC:
Yeah, sounds like a perfect chance to call in Zoey's favor with SEA.

"Sounds good," Mila says. She doesn't get what's going on with the code—physics and mechanics are more her speed—but it's obviously something big if "Simon" was willing to take such a big risk to get it to someone else's attention. "Hit her up and let's see if we can figure out what's going on." She points at the rig. "This smells like someone monkeying with the space elevator, and that's my bread and butter right there."

Aditi follows the conversation silently. She's nervous - getting caught up in SEA affairs could prove very dangerous for her - but she wants to find out why Simon had to die. He wasn't really a friend but he was nice and he deserved better.

As you are contemplating your next move Aditi begins feeling a buzzing coming from the strange comm device that Simon had. It seems that someone called 'Zhang' is calling....
Jan 28, 2020 5:42 pm
Aditi shows the device to everyone and says quietly: "Someone is calling Simon. What now?"
Jan 28, 2020 6:02 pm
"Answer it! Uh—maybe lower your voice an octave or two."
Jan 29, 2020 3:50 pm
Mila nods and adds quickly, "Yeah, answer it and see if you can scoop some information out of them."
Jan 29, 2020 3:53 pm
Aditi looks at the other two with an unsure expression. She doubts she can pull of a convincing male voice but they apparently want her to do it.
With a nervous gulp, she takes the call and, in the deepest tone she can reach, simply opens with: "Uh-huh?"
The less she says, the less likelihood for the one on the other side to notice it's not Simon.

Ok, can you make me an Average (2 x Purple) Deception check please - you can have a Boost for keeping it short but also a Setback die as you don't sound much like Simon at all (so 2 x Purple, 1 x Blue, 1 x Black dice as well as your stat/skill dice)
