Part 1: Happy Hour

Nov 12, 2019 11:57 am
New Angeles. It’s the biggest, dirtiest, richest, poorest, most advanced, and most dangerous city amongst the worlds of Earth, Mars, and Luna. Home to half a billion people and counting, it’s a landscape of gleaming starscrapers and arcologies hundreds of stories tall, and dank, moldering undercity slums that never see daylight. And in the center of it all rises the reason for all this fame and fortune: the Beanstalk. The New Angeles Space Elevator carries a steady stream of humanity to the stars, and brings back a constant flow of Helium3 to feed Earth’s hungry fusion reactors.
It’s a world of powerful interests, hungry megacorporations, and dangerous games of politics and betrayal. But it’s also a world of average people, struggling to get by and stay afloat. If you’re being honest, you and your friends count yourselves amongst the latter. Just a bunch of regular people, trying to keep it together in the shadow of the Beanstalk.

At the base of the huge mountain, the Volcan De Cayambe, that serves as the seat of the Beanstalk, sits the vast Base De Cayambe district. Base De Cayambe is comprised of kilometers of warehouses, flop-houses, brothels, and stim dens crowded around the condo-habs and bodegas that house and feed those too poor to live anywhere else. However, it may be squalid, smelly, and mostly lawless, but it’s still home.
Tonight, like most Fridays, you meet up at your favorite dive bar, La Raiz. Buried beneath Beanpod Transit Arterial 40, La Raiz sits right at plaza level. That means it’s wedged into the side of a starscraper with 100 progressively-higher-class levels above it, and another 100 progressively worse stories below it. Plaza level is the artificial "street-level" of New Angeles, a series of pedestrian squares, slidewalks, elevated streets, and storefronts suspended fifty to a hundred stories above true ground level. Everything below that is the undercity, where life goes from "mostly lawless" to "complete, gang-run anarchy."
La Raiz isn’t all that much better. As you step in off the trash-strewn street you find yourself in a dark hole of a bar, decorated with flickering holos of the Beanstalk as seen from space while it was under construction. It’s also crowded, smelly, and every few minutes another Beanpod thumps through the arterial overhead and causes the whole bar to shake.
But as you get near the bar you see the rest of your friends waiting for you. Jace is bartending tonight, and she sets a pint in front of you as you pull up a stool.
OOC:
And we're off! Introduce your characters as you arrive in the bar, consider yourselves to arrive in the order that you post (so first one to post will be the first one to arrive, second person will be second, etc).
Nov 12, 2019 12:41 pm
Aditi enters the bar dressed in plain and cheap street clothes of low quality. She spends most of her time wearing medical scrubs, even at home, but she doesn't want to stick out here.
She accepts the drink with a polite nod and smile - maybe too polite for this place - and sits down at the bar. None of her friends seem to have arrived yet so she silently waits for them while sipping her beer.
She doesn't like always being the first but she likes the feeling of making others wait for her even less. Old habits die hard and prioritizing others over herself is one of her oldest and hardest ones to break.
Nov 12, 2019 1:39 pm
Mila's large form fills the doorway of the bar, her sleeveless top showing off her arms, one flesh, one metal. After two weeks up-Stalk, she is looking to blow off some steam and spend the credits burning a hole in her pocket. Her eyes light up when she sees her best friend already settling in at the bar.

"Aditi!" she booms, "First as usual, eh? If I didn't know any better I'd think you liked it here." It was half joke, half hope that Aditi actually does find something enjoyable about these dive bars and isn't just humoring the rest of them.

Taking up as much space as she pleases, Mila grabs a stool next to Aditi. "Thanks for the piss, Jace," she says with a wink as the bartender passes her a pint. "Keep it coming, I'm gonna need a head start to catch up to these lightweights."
Nov 12, 2019 2:41 pm
Zoey Ortega blows out a final puff of tobacco mist and shuts off her vape. Looking up, up, and up at the giant Beanstalk, she shakes her head and enters the bar. It's been a while since she was "downsized" from the company that runs it, but her firing is still a sore spot months later.

Seeing her two friends already at the bar, she smiles and sidles in next to Mila. "Make room for the rest of us, Mila! We big girls gotta look out for each other!" She waves to Aditi further down the bar. "Hola, Aditi. It's been a minute. Pass me that pitcher, please. I could use a drink." She regards the holos of the Beanstalk that pass as décor in this hole. "Why we always gotta meet in Cayambe? Don't matter how much I drink—that Beanstalk's like a huge middle finger to me from the corps."
Nov 12, 2019 4:43 pm
Tam walks up to the bar and a quick grin breaks out on his face. As he walks up to the doorway, he thinks back to the last few days and how slows work has been.

Stepping into the bar, Tam steps off and move to the side. As he scans the room with a practised ease, Tam's eyes settles on the others. Walking up and accepting the drink, Tam takes a long drink before setting the mug down. I see you guys started without me. Taking another drink from his mug, Tam looks over at the others how's life going? Anyone found out if anyone is hiring?
Nov 12, 2019 4:51 pm
"I do like it here", Aditi replies to Mila. "I enjoy being able to relax with all of you" Although she is being genuine, her words sound just a little bit automatic, as if she is following a script in her head. Mila and the others would not regard that as anything unusual unusual however, just a personality quirk that they are used to by now.
When Zoey asks her to pass her the drink, her head immediately snaps towards Zoey and she hands it to her without a second's hesitation.
When Tam enters, she greets him with a nod. "You can always help out at the clinic. But I don't think we could pay you."
Nov 12, 2019 5:20 pm
Zoey downs about half a mug of the tasteless lager in a single gulp. "Thanks, 'Diti," she says, giving a faux salute. "This stuff don't taste too good, but at least it can get you drunk." She turns to Tam with a playful grin. "And look at you, Mr. Mixing-Business-with-Pleasure! Yeah, times are tough, man. If anyone's hiring it sure isn't the Space Elevetor Authority." The words sound like a curse. "Maybe one of you got a lead on something."

Mila claps Zoey on the back as she grabs a barstool. "Zoey, if you can find a place in New Angeles where the corps aren't giving you the finger, I'd love to hear about it. Until then, there's only so far I can walk after getting back before I need a drink."

She waves at Tam as he sits down and takes a drink. "Hope you haven't been slacking off on your workout while I've been up-Stalk. I need someone in that gym who can keep up with me."
Nov 12, 2019 5:45 pm
Tam finishes his drink and motions for a second one. Looking over at Mila, he laughs as he listens to her. Have no fear, I'll still be able to run circles around you.

Glancing around at the others, Tam takes a drink from his mug. [b]Has anyone heard anything worth knowing?
Nov 12, 2019 10:23 pm
Mila glances over at Tam. He has to be pretty hard up for work for him to be fishing so hard for a lead. "I've got nothing. Or at least nothing job-shaped. There's always yammering about the next model of bioroid or clone and how it's going to put us all out of work. Apparently Jinteki's got something that can live in vacuum without a suit now." She grimaces and takes a long pull of her drink. Not what she wants to be thinking about tonight.

Mila shrugs. "Maybe Vince'll have something for you if he turns up tonight."
Nov 13, 2019 2:41 pm
As you are all talking and waiting to see if Vince show's his face Tam feels a tap on his shoulder. You spin round and see a thin, unassuming man in a discount suit squinting at you. He seems a bit nervous but smiles and thrusts his hand at yours. "Hey there! You remember me right? Simon, Simon Leander! Fancy seeing you here." as he speaks he looks up over at Aditi and gives her a friendly nod as well.

Zoey thrusts out a hand, rough-palmed and oil-stained around the nail beds. "Zoey Ortega. Don't believe we've had the pleasure."
Nov 13, 2019 2:50 pm
It takes Tam a couple seconds to remember Simon. Yeah, Simon..sorry about that. We met, about a year ago..you had a small bounty on you for a simple parole violation. It's good to see you out and about. What brings you out here? It can't be to go slummin with the rest of us dregs.
Nov 13, 2019 3:00 pm
"Mr. Leander, it is a pleasure to see you again", Aditi says. She stands up to greet him but doesn't shake his hand unless he offers his hand to her first. "I'm glad to see that you are alright. You look better than last time we met."
Nov 13, 2019 3:10 pm
Mila waves at the newcomer and introduces herself as "Mila" before going back to her drink, uninterested in the newcomer and his cheap suit.
Nov 14, 2019 3:30 pm
Simon smiles and nods at Tam "Ehhhh, water under the bridge. I knows you were just doing your job. Everyone's gotta eat yeah?" as he speaks he maintains his nervous smile and shakes Zoeys hand and nods at Mila before turning to Aditi "Doc! Good to see ya. Yeah I'm all good now, you patched me up good and proper" he says patting at his side.

He chats amiably for a few more minutes, just making general small talk more than anything, before he get's ready to leave "Look, I gotta get moving but it was good seeing the two of you...and the other two of you" he chuckles at the last finding something funny before he waves and heads out of the front door.
OOC:
Right, fist check of the game needed - can you all make me an Average Vigilance check.

For those not familiar you need to select the Star Wars FFG option from the dice roller drop down (accessed via the Advanced button at the bottom of the page). An Average Difficulty check is made against 2 x Difficulty dice, those are the Purple ones on the menu. For the positive dice for the check you will need to note your characters Willpower number and your Vigilance number, the highest of the two values is the number of positive dice you will roll on the check, the lower number is how many of those you will 'upgrade' to Yellow/Proficiency dice (the rest will be Green/Ability Dice) - for example if you have a Willpower of 3 and a Vigilance of 1 you would roll 1 x Yellow and 2 x Green dice for the positive side of the dice pool and also 2 x Purple/Difficulty dice.

If you're struggling with that (it is a bit to get your head round) just shout out.

Zoey gives Aditi the side eye, then looks back at Leander. "Let me guess. Snowboarding accident."
Nov 14, 2019 3:39 pm
Aditi begins responding almost automatically. "Happy to..."
...Serve.
She just barely manages to stop herself before finishing the sentence and quickly corrects herself: "Happy to see my work be appreciated. Do you want to join us for a drink?"
Nov 14, 2019 3:43 pm
Tam pauses as he watches to see how Simon responds.

Mila chuckles, "I've never known Aditi to put someone back together the wrong way."

Simon chuckles at Zoey's comment "Yeah, something like that" he says with a smile before turning back to Aditi "Another time maybe, Like I said I gotta get moving right now". He smiles and moves out through the front door.

As he does both Mila and Tam notice a couple of rough looking individuals wait a couple of seconds after he leaves and begin to hurry after him. You both try to get up but get surprised by the other doing the same and don't manage to get a good look at the individuals before they are out of the door (From the Threats on your rolls).
OOC:
I've used the Threats generated on Kaigen and Squadfater's checks to say the guys that seem to be following Simon get out of the bar before you have chance to do anything. Aditi and Zoey both have some Advantages to use so do you have any idea's what you want to use them for? As you both failed the check they can't be used to spot the guys following Simon but they can be used for some other narrative effect in the scene (if you've no idea I have a couple of things I can provide for you)

2 advantage from Zoey -- maybe she spots someone else reacting strangely to this guy, someone else who recognized him, so a person we might talk to.

Zoey's idea sounds good. I dont have any others right now except maybe if something was medically wrong with Simon.

Zoey - as you watch Simon leave your eyes are drawn to a woman in the corner of the bar who seems to be paying a suspicious amount of attention to him.

Aditi - As Simon turns to leave you could have sworn he slipped something into Tam's jacket pocket but the motion was so swift you weren't quite sure what you saw at first.
OOC:
So what are you all doing now?
Nov 18, 2019 2:30 pm
Aditi's eyes rest on Tam's pocket for a moment, which is why she misses the thugs going after him.
She thinks whether she should ask Tam about what Simon put in his pocket but it might be something personal so she decides to wait until they are in private.
She takes another sip of her ale. It's stronger than she likes but she doesn't complain. She never does.
"I think he is a good guy", she comments to nobody in particular.
Nov 18, 2019 3:09 pm
Zoey turns to Tam and Aditi. "What was that all about? This some sort of Fight Club thing?" She indicates the woman in the corner. "You two aren't the only ones who seem to know that dude."
Nov 18, 2019 3:27 pm
Mila watches two bruisers take off after Simon, and when Zoey points out the woman in the corner, she takes a long pull from her beer and says, without looking up. "Seems like a popular guy. Should we be worried?"

OOC:
Would Tam have noticed Simon slipping him the paper?
OOC:
Unfortunately not, he made a Skullduggery check to slip whatever it was into your pocket without Tam noticing (kindof a reverse pick-pocket)
Nov 19, 2019 1:25 pm
OOC:
So what is everyone doing then? Everyone staying put at the bar?
Nov 19, 2019 1:27 pm
OOC:
Aditi didn't see anything so unless someone tells her that a couple of thugs followed Simon when he left, she has no reason not to just stay and enjoy her evening
Nov 19, 2019 1:50 pm
OOC:
Since Ram saw the thugs, he'll follow them. Since he didn't notice the paper being put into his pocket, unless someone points it out, he won't know it's there.

OOC:
If you make an IC post about leaving and let me know what's up, I'll come with you. And I'll even let you know about the thing in your pocket ;)
Nov 19, 2019 3:39 pm
Tam pushes back his chair and stands up. I'm going to make sure Simon is okay. Anyone want to come with?
Nov 19, 2019 3:47 pm
Aditi looks up from her drink at him, slightly confused. When Simon talked to them just now, he seemed fine. "Why? Is something wrong?"
Nov 19, 2019 3:58 pm
When he left two thug like characters got up and seemed intent on following him. I could be wrong, but I could be right.
Nov 19, 2019 4:01 pm
Mila finishes her beer, nods to Jace to put it on her tab, and reluctantly pushes back from the bar. "Those fellas looked like they were in a hurry and capable of doing some damage if they caught up to him." She grins at Tam, "Which means I'd better make sure you aren't outnumbered. Simon didn't look like he was much good in a fight."

"Hello!" Zoey says, waving her hands in front of Tam's face. "What the hell is going on? Who is that guy? And why do we care a lick about him?"
OOC:
Zoey asked IC who these people are, but Tam and Aditi never replied.
Nov 19, 2019 4:11 pm
"I will come with you", Aditi says, putting down her drink. "If he or you require help, I have to be there to assist."
As she is speaking, something clicks in her mind and she hastily adds: "Tam, Simon placed something in your pocket before he left. It might be related to these thugs."
OOC:
Is that a secret plot device in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Nov 19, 2019 4:13 pm
Aditi turns to Zoey. "He was a patient of mine some time ago. He might be in trouble. Without going into detail, he was in trouble the last time I saw him."
Nov 19, 2019 4:22 pm
"So how do you know him, Tam? And your answer should involve the promise of more beer down the road after we follow him or whatever."

I'm of course on board with following him from a player perspective. But Zoey might need a bit of coaxing. :)

I met Simon when someone had a bounty put out on him. I caught him and while bringing him in, we got to talking. So when it was all said and done, we parted ways amicably. You guys want to come with me, I'll buy the next round of drinks.
Nov 19, 2019 6:56 pm
"Now you're talking!" says the tech. "You're twisting my arm, but I'll come." She nods toward the woman in the corner. "Let's not forget about the woman over there. She seems to know the guy. Might have an idea what's up with him."
Nov 20, 2019 2:37 pm
"If the situation outside could turn into a fight, maybe I should stay behind to talk to this woman", Aditi offers. Her friends know that she detests violence and avoids fighting whenever possible. "She might know something important."
Nov 20, 2019 2:54 pm
"Yeah, I'll go with you, 'Diti. You should do the talking." Zoey gives the others a nod. "You know where to find us if you need us."
OOC:
Do we have something like cell phones or the equivalent to stay in touch while split up?
Nov 20, 2019 10:26 pm
As Tam starts moving towards the door Zoey and Aditi approach the woman at the table. As you get closer you see she is human but extensively G-modded. She has long bright green hair and her skin shimmers as though covered in some sort of scales. She places her PAD face down on the table as you approach and looks up at you and you notice her eyes are more snakelike than normal....
OOC:
G-modding (or Genetic Modification) is fairly common. Individuals can pay to have their very g-nome amended and make themselves "better". Many adopt animalistic trait's which seems like this woman has done.

Most people carry a PAD (Personal Access Device) which is pretty much an up gunned smart phone. Looking at the character inventories the only characters who don't have one are Tam and Zoey (although Zoey has a personal rig which can be used in place of a PAD, its just quite a bit bulkier). A personal commlink is only 25 credits so if Tam wants one he could pick one up - these are more like walkie talkies so have alimited range but are pretty much untraceable (I'd also be happy saying the rest of you could use your PAD/rig to connect to it if Tam is in range)
Nov 21, 2019 3:05 pm
Aditi nods thankingly at Zoey and then walks over to the woman.

The woman's appearance doesn't phase her. Aditi herself has no interest in these kinds of "augmentations" but she has seen people do much worse to themselves than this.
"Excuse me, ma'am", she says. "We couldn't help but notice that you were paying a lot of attention to our friend just now. Do you know him?"
OOC:
Squad, don't forget to have Tam check his pocket. Might be important ;)
Nov 21, 2019 3:24 pm
As Tam gets up to follow the two guys, he feels something weird in his pocket. Reaching in, he pulls it out.
Nov 25, 2019 3:31 am
"Cool mods, by the way," Zoey adds.
OOC:

Tam - as you reach into your pocket you feel a small, hard, rectangular object. Pulling it out you see it is some sort of memchip. As you get outside you momentarily pause as the sound of one of the beanpods thunders by. As it fades you begin to pick up the sounds of a commotion coming from an alley adjacent to the bar.
OOC:
If Tam wants to try and figure out what's happening in the alley before wandering into the middle of something you can make an Easy (1 x Purple/Difficulty dice) Perception test.
Aditi and Zoey - the woman glances at Zoey with a slight quirk to her lips before turning her gaze back to Aditi, fingers tapping against the back of her PAD. "And if I do what of it?" she says, the slight rasp as she talks being a pretty clear indication that her mods are not just limited to the exterior of her body.
OOC:
There will be a test involved here for Zoey to try and get any info out of the woman. The usual skills to be made during a Social encounter would be one of the following:

Charm (Presence) - if you are trying to convince someone to do something nicely
Coercion (Willpower) - if you are threatening them in some manner
Deception (Cunning) - if you are lying to them to get them to give you some thing/info
Leadership (Presence) - if you are commanding someone to do something
Negotiation (Presence) - if you were offering something up in trade (such as trying to bribe someone)

The above are just some pretty basic examples of using the listed skills, the Genesys core rulebook goes into more detail for each one, but it should be enough for you to figure how you want to approach things. If you want to use a skill that isn't listed above in a social context then I'm certainly open to it but just be aware that the difficulty would probably be significantly higher.

Based on your interaction so far Charm (Presence) would seem to be the most likely choice, if that's how you're wanting to play this then make an Average (2 x Purple/Difficulty dice) check and remember to include the Boost (blue) die from Zoe's assistance. If you want to tackel this in a different way then just let me know before rolling as it may affect the difficulty.
Nov 25, 2019 3:55 pm
Mila follows Tam out. She glances at the memchip he pulls out of his pocket. "Where'd that come from?"
OOC:
Since Mila is going with Tam, she'll attempt the Perception test, if that's okay.

Aditi looks at the woman, trying to figure out how she might be involved with this. Is she a friend or acquantance of Simon's? Does she work with the thugs that followed him out?
She eventually decides that it doesn't matter. This woman won't give them the information they want freely - and why would she? Most people don't have Aditi's internalized drive to please and serve others.
"He might be in trouble. I'm sure you did not miss those people that followed him outside. If you have any useful information for us about his situation, we would be in your debt."
OOC:
I would like to do this as a Negotiation roll with an implied reward for helping us. She could ask for money or accept us as "in her debt". If you say this is not really a Negotiation situation, I would roll it as Charm. Whichever you think fits better.

Ok, as your not offering anything specific this might fall under the Favour mechanics. Basically if you want to go that route you would just need to note down that you will owe a Small Favour to 'Sathra the Snake' - if that sounds good let me know and we'll proceed on that basis.
Tam and Mila - you hear a noise of something heavy crashing into a dumpster maybe and a cry of pain along with a few chuckles. You'd guess there were maybe 4 or 5 people down the alley but it's a bit hard to be sure without looking.
Nov 26, 2019 10:57 am

Sounds good to me. Should I make a roll then? And what die type do I get from Zoey for a Negotiation roll?
Nov 26, 2019 11:41 am
OOC:
No roll needed if you're taking a Favour. Just mark down that you owe 'Sathra the Snake' a Small Favour
Aditi and Zoey - the woman's smile widens somewhat. "I'm sure we can come to some arrangement for repayment, later though." you quickly exchange contact info with the woman who introduces herself as Sathra before she continues. "Your 'friend' seemed familiar. Word is that Los Scorpiones are looking for someone that meets his description, want a word with him about some job he's doing for 14K....word is they are veeery keen on speaking to him."
OOC:
Los Scorpiones and 14k are to org crime outfits. Pretty much everyone knows the following about them:

Los Scorpiones were formed through a coalition of various drug cartels throughout Central and South America after the founding of New Angeles. They run all manner of narcotics and engage in the messiest of illegal activities including 'Organ Grinding' (where people are snatched off the streets for their organs and cybernetics, after which their remains are dumped deep in the undercity). Los Scorpiones tend to have a lot of dealings with local street gangs

14K were formed from a number of Triad families. They primarily deal with opiate trafficking and counterfeiting but it is an open secret that a number of seemingly legit lobbying firms (often promoting Chinese business interests) are run with 14K backing.
Nov 26, 2019 12:04 pm
"Thank you for your help, ma'am", Aditi replies to Sathra's information, barely managing to resist the urge to give a bow. While owing someone a favor is never a good idea, especially in these parts, Aditi is glad she got this information. If Los Scorpiones are after Simon, he is in big trouble - and her friends who went after him might be as well. "If you need assistance, you have my contact info. I am a doctor so that should give you an idea of what type of help I can offer you."
Nov 26, 2019 2:25 pm
Zoey squirms a bit before forcing a smile at the G-modded woman. "But something tells me you've got a good doc... You some kind of bounty hunter?"
Nov 27, 2019 3:19 pm
Sathra smiles at Zoey "For cosmetic work yes but it always pays to have other options in case of emergencies. As for my profession, well, let's leave that for another time if our paths cross again"
OOC:
What is everyone else doing?
Nov 27, 2019 3:29 pm
"I'm sure they will" Aditi's response is very matter-of-fact, neither antagonistic nor cheerful in any way. She's not excited about having to repay her debt but she also has less of a problem with being indebted to Sathra than most of her friends would probably have. Part of freedom is the freedom to choose whom you serve.
She turns to Zoey. "We should go outside, join the others. They should know who it is that's threatening Simon."
OOC:
I'm sure this conversation took longer than it took for the others outside to make their perception roll. Aditi will head outside but you decide when she actually arrives there. If she misses the whole combat (if one is about to happen), that's fine with me and would probably make sense.
Nov 27, 2019 3:34 pm
OOC:
It was a pretty short conversation so you're not far behind them, relative positioning will depend on how Tam and Mila react to what they heard

Zoey gives the Snake a purse-lipped grin and follows Aditi out the door. Once out of earshot, she whispers, "Be careful, 'Diti. You've got a good bedside manner, right? Next time use that? Not sure I'm eager for when that Snake comes a-calling..."
Nov 28, 2019 3:47 pm
Mila glances at Tam. It sounds like this guy is in a bit of trouble, but she's still not sure it's worth getting into a fight over him. "I've got your back, Tam," she says in an undertone. "If you think we should help him, I'll be right behind you."

OOC:
Will give Squadfather44 until tomorrow to respond and will then move things along
Dec 5, 2019 12:56 pm
Tam and Mila move round the side of La Raiz and find yourselves in a long, enclosed passageway, filled with garbage bins and discarded trash, and lined with sealed doors that lead into the interior of the starscraper. About ten meters away, Leander has been slammed up against the wall by a brute in a stained T-shirt and ripped pants. He’s backed up by a few more toughs wearing aviator sunglasses and leather jackets.
The big guy turns slightly, and you can see he’s holding Leander about two feet up with a massive, powered gauntlet that envelops the brute's arm all the way to the shoulder. "Beat it," he growls.
Dec 5, 2019 8:05 pm
OOC:
Can Aditi and Zoey catch up? We know where they went?
Dec 5, 2019 8:07 pm
OOC:
We're probably a bit behind since we had this other conversation first. I assume they'll get a chance to act before we catch up
Dec 5, 2019 8:13 pm
She may not know this Simon guy from a hole in the ground, but Mila is not a fan of watching someone get beat down. "You're a big man, beating down a guy half your size with a fancy toy," she says to the brute, flexing her cybernetic arm. "Why don't you put him down before you break a nail?"
Dec 10, 2019 11:30 am
"Fancy toy?!?!" the big guy says angrily before slamming Leander into the wall with a sickening crunch. Tossing his limp form to the ground, he starts lumbering towards you shouting "Look what you made me do, you'll pay for that!" as he moves the other thugs in the alley also begin moving.
OOC:
Let's have initiative. This is kicking off just as Zoey and Aditi exit the bar (they hear the thugs shouts as they step out). As Mila was ready for things kicking off she needs to make a Simple Cool skill check, Zoey and Aditi will need to make a Simple Vigilance check as they were not expecting to step out into a fight. I'm going to say that Tam will act at the end of the round.

All PC's are at Medium range to the thugs and where Simon is laying, Zoey and Aditi do not have a direct line of sight to where the Thugs are currently so would need to us a manoeuvre to get eyes on their current position (may change if the Thugs go first)

Ok, finalised initiative order is as follows:

Initiative Order
PC - we're here
PC -
NPC -
PC -
NPC -
PC (Tam) -

The slots are ordered from highest number of Successes on the initiative check to lowest with Advantages used to break ties (if still tied a PC would go ahead of an NPC). Characters can act on any slot of their type (PC or NPC) not just the one that corresponds to what they rolled. In a turn you can take an Action and a Manoeuvre at no cost, if you wanted to perform a second Manoeuvre you can either swap your action for one (again at no cost) or if you still want to perform an Action as well as 2 Manoeuvres you can but you need to pay 2 Strain to do so.

If you're not sure what actions and manoeuvres are available to you just outline what you'd like to do and I'll tell you what you need to accomplish that.

First PC slot is up, who want's to take it?
Dec 10, 2019 3:18 pm
OOC:
Mila should probably go first since she's right in the middle of the action. Zoey can go second and I can go after the first NPC. Aditi is not eager to get into a fight
Dec 10, 2019 3:50 pm
Mila watches the thug's testosterone-fueled meltdown as she grabs a convenient length of pipe from the rubbish nearby and assumes a defensive stance. "Bring it on."
OOC:
Guarded Stance (assuming that's still a thing in Genesys) to gain +1 melee defense and picking up an improvised melee weapon (I'll spend a story point if necessary for there to be one conveniently at hand).
Dec 10, 2019 5:25 pm
Zoey runs toward the commotion, grabbing her chromecrushers from her bag as she does so.
OOC:
Only enough maneuvers to fetch the weapon and move once toward the fight.

The thug grins as Zoey rounds the corner "Got some more friends eh? I'll get to them in a second" he says as he steps in and delivers a punch with his gauntlet straight into Mila.

How about a boost die on Mila's next check from the threat from the thug leaving himself open to a counterattack? Also, I thought all the thugs were at Medium from the PCs?
Dec 11, 2019 8:00 pm
Aditi comes a bit closer so she can see the scene. She doesn't get involved in the fight herself but she calls out: "We have you outnumbered! Just cut your losses and leave!"

Sounds good. Yeah that's my mistake, thought Mila and Zoey had closed the distance to them for some reason but looking back it was just me having the wrong end of the stick. It would be a Coercion(Willpower) test, who are you targetting? The Gaunlet dude or the group of thugs (they low level mooks and mechanically known as a Minion Group, they are considered to be a single enity for the purposes of them acting or being targetted by things in encounters) - difficulty will be Average (2 x Purple/Difficulty dice) for either but if you are targeting the Gauntlet dude you will have to add 1 x Black/Setback die to the check as it's a bit harder on him due to his blood being up

Mila's attention narrows to the gauntleted thug in front of her. She'll have a bruise from the punch he just landed for sure, but she's not nearly as phased by it as he was expecting. She takes advantage of his hesitation to judge the right angle of attack.

"My turn," she growls, swinging the pipe at his neck.
OOC:
Maneuver to aim, Attack against gauntlet thug with medium improvised weapon (5+2 damage)

Zoey pulls on the gauntlets as she rounds the corner, but seeing the brawl in progress, she stops in her tracks. She reaches back into her bag and pulls out a janky-looking aluminum cylinder. "Hey!" she calls to the thugs further away. "Homemade grenade. Wanna see what it can do? Or you got better places to be?"
OOC:
Taking a maneuver to put on the gauntlets, a second (2 strain) to take out the stun grenade. Trying to use Coercion to get the thugs to stand down or leave or something. Added a boost for the grenade being out, but can ignore if necessary.

As Zoey shouts at the thugs they seem to largely ignore her, being more focused on Tam and his stun baton than anything else.

Mila brings her pipe crashing down onto the gauntleted thugs shoulder and is rewarded by a satisfying cracking noise and a shout of pain "You fucker! I'll fucking kill you!" he yells before swinging another punch in at her.

Aditi takes out her stun gun and makes a hesitant step forward. She wants to step into the fight and help her friends, but fighting - hurting - another person, even if they are attacking her friends... it's against her nature.
"You think you guys are tough, working for Los Scorpiones, don't you?" She has no guarantee that that's the case, of course, but it's worth a try. "But don't believe for a second they will even care enough about you to scrape your remains off the street once we're done with you. Just give up while you still can and we'll let you live."

She's trying to sound tough, but she's not a fighter and that's clear from not just her appearance but also her tone and voice. She just has to hope that gauntlet guy is too distracted to notice.

Tam on the other hand connects the with Stun Baton causing a yelp and a slight look of disorientation from one of the thugs but he does over extend himself somewhat on the attack and needs to re-position.

Divested of her improvised weapon, Mila grimaces as she aims her next punches. Aditi and Zoey, bless their tender hearts, keep trying to talk the thugs down, but they might as well be flailing their arms in zero-g; without leverage, they wouldn't get anywhere.

Controlled application of force, on the other hand, Mila thinks as she throws a series of punches at the gauntleted thug, that'll get you where you want to go.

Yes, normally you could spend three Advantages todisable a piece of gear instead of damaging a target. Sounds good, I'll use the remaining point of advantage to recover a point of strain, just to keep things simple.
The thug thinks he's avoiding her attacks, protecting himself. What he's actually doing is positioning his power gauntlet exactly where Mila wants it to be. Her cybernetic hand grabs the gauntlet around the wrist, squeezing down like a vice, destroying the conduits that power it. "Oops," she says tauntingly, "I broke your toy"

I'd be happy for you to make an Average Medicine check, each Success would remove one rounds worth of Disorient. Tricky thing though is as Mila is in the middle of a fight it's going to be tricky to apply a treatment so you'll need to add a setback die due to Mila moving about so much and another for the conditions in the alley being less than ideal for treating someone. I'm also going to upgrade the difficulty once as there's a decent risk of Aditi getting clipped my a stray attack (which would occur on despair result)

Total difficulty pool then is 1 x Difficulty (Purple), 1 x Challenge (Red), and 2 x Setback (Black) dice. If you have any thoughts on how you'd want to approach this I'm happy for you to argue your case to do something that can add one or more a boost dice

Seeing that Mila got hit pretty bad by the enemy, Aditi runs in to help. She still doesn't feel comfortable attacking the enemies herself but she can do what she does best: help her friends, even at risk to herself.

Mila's fist connects solidly into the gaunlet dudes side and he grunts in pain. The fight between the two of them seems to be descending into quite the ugly affair.
SavageBob says:
Zoey takes off at a sprint after the fleeing thug. "C'mon! Not a fan of my inventions?" She closes the distance and takes a swing with her chromecrushers.
OOC:
Two moves to engage (medium to engaged) for 2 strain. Then attack with the Chromecrushers.

D'oh! 2 Advantage enough for Zoey's momentum to carry her into a trash receptacle, knocking it over and slowing the thug from running away? Basically, removing his benefit of ignoring difficult terrain.
OOC:
Afraid the difficult terrain would impede Zoey as well (unless she has a way to negate it) so if you are still wanting to use 2 x manoeuvres to close it would only take you to Short range. Also the thugs ability to not be affected was due to the 3 x Advantages they burned that turn so there effectively isn't a benefit you could strip currently.

Whatever you are wanting to do (plenty of stuff lying about you could grab and throw at the guy if you wanted) also remember there is a Boost die available from Mila's last check
Jan 8, 2020 1:44 am
OOC:
Yeah, with enough advantage, previous benefits can be negated, but 2 advantage on my part probably isn't enough to negate his 3. So 2 maneuvers to get from Medium to Short range? I can't do that and still chuck something at him (since I'd need a maneuver to pick the thing up), so I'm looking at a medium-range ranged attack or leaving him be, right?

I don't think that would apply in this instance, they've already move the extra distance from using their Advantages to ignore the difficult terrain so it would be a bit difficult to justify moving them back a range band (I'd be up for it if the argument was compelling enough though)

Mila makes a mental note to thank Aditi later as she blocks his attacks, struggling to find an opening for a few exploratory jabs. The thug is doing an excellent job of making himself hard to hit, but Mila isn't willing to let up on the pressure—for all she knows, he's got another weapon that he'll pull if he gets enough breathing room to do so—so she takes a risky few swings. She grins as a lucky punch connects forcefully, throwing the thug back to the ground. "Stay down this time, you bastard," she spits.

"Tam and I found Simon being roughed up by these thugs." Mila gestures at the unconscious thug whose pockets she's going through. "This one told us to beat it. I told him what he could do with that suggestion." She shrugs. "And here we are."
Jan 16, 2020 10:49 am
Aditi - you rush over to Simon but your steps slow as you get close. The unnatural angle his head now sits at to his neck and the vacant stare coming from his eyes make it quite clear that he is dead.

Zoey and Mila - Tam comes over to you looking at a small device in his hand curiously, looks like some sort of memchip by the look of things. "Found this in my pocket as we were coming out of the bar. I'm guessing it's what you saw him slip in when we were chatting" he says nodding at Aditi before holding it out to Zoey
Jan 16, 2020 10:57 am
Aditi kneels down next to the dead man. "No, no, no!", she mutters. Just to make sure, she checks his pulse and breath but she already knows the results. Defeated, she stands back up and announces: "He's dead."
Jan 16, 2020 1:58 pm
Zoey spares a glance toward Aditi and gives her a look of sympathy. She takes the device from Tam. "What the hell?"
OOC:
Is there a Knowledge check I can try to identify it or get some more details about it? Or is this something I'm supposed to read with a pad?

Aditi - as you quickly check Simon over for vital signs you note two unusual things. On his belt is an SEA (Space Elevator Authority) ID badge with Simon's photo but identifies him as "Systems Analyst First Class Borgman Jones" and he also has a strange looking comm device that seems a bit more elaborate than a normal PAD.
SavageBob says:

OOC:

OOC:
Zoey can tell at a glance that it's a memchip (think of it like a USB Flash/Pen hard drive). In order to see what's on it she would either need to use a PAD or her Portable Rig but down an alley at the back of the bar probably isn't the best place to start looking at it.

Whilst the rest of you are puzzling over the situation Tam drags the thugs together and quickly restrains them all with a few snap-locks. Hearing Aditi pronounce Simon dead Tam swears profusely before turning to the rest of you "Look, we made quite a bit of noise here so I expect the NAPD are already on there way. I can probably spin this that I took these guys down after they offed Simon hoping there'd be an outstanding warrant on at least one or two of them but the rest of you should make yourself scarce pretty quickly....well, unless you can think of anything to ask these fuckers before you ghost it that is"
Jan 20, 2020 2:34 pm
"What do you two, think?" Zoey asks Aditi and Mila. "You want to dig into this? I'll come along for the ride if so. Otherwise, I left half a beer back at that bar."
Jan 20, 2020 3:14 pm
"I'm not sure it'll be that easy", Aditi replies. She shows the badge she found on "Simon". "What do you think of this?"
Jan 20, 2020 5:57 pm
"By the looks of things," Mila says, glancing from the dead body to the thugs, "we're in this whether we like it or not, so we might as well figure out exactly what kind of a hole we're in." She glances at the badge before passing it to Zoey. "But we'd better get out of here like Tam says. I don't want to have to have a conversation with the NAPD about this." She shrugs and shoots Tam an apologetic look. "Thanks, I owe you a few beers next time."
Jan 20, 2020 6:40 pm
Aditi quickly joins Mila. She more than most should not be found here. If NAPD starts questioning her, it wouldn't take them long to figure out who she really is and then she would be in a whole lot of trouble.
"Yes, let's quickly go back inside before they show up!", she agrees. The others can definitely tell that she's pretty nervous and eager to get out of here.
Jan 20, 2020 7:21 pm
Zoey startles at the sight of the badge. "This guy works for SEA? Or, used to? Much as I hate those bastards for firing me, I think you two are right. Let's get out of here. We can head to my place, unless one of you lives closer."
OOC:
Figure Zoey probably lives within a reasonable distance since she used to work at the beanstalk. Also, she doesn't know about "Simon's" weird PAD, or else she'd suggest snagging it, too.
Jan 21, 2020 2:13 pm
You quickly discuss things amongst yourselves and come to the conclusion that heading back into the bar or to any of your apartments might not be the best idea. You head a bit away and duck off the street into a Happy Panda Noodle Bar. Inside the brightly lit chain restaurant, the proprietor dishes up steaming bowls of what charitably could be considered ramen, then seeing your faces, moves down the bar to give you some privacy. You duck into a booth and take a second to catch your breaths whilst Zoey plugs the memchip into her portable rig and begins studying it.

Zoey quickly works through the code and although there is an annoying lack of commenting throughout it soon becomes quite clear why it seemed familiar as she finds the program was created by the SEA and is designed to run on the SEA’s systems.

For the advantages - As with any large project it is obvious several people were involved with writing this program and Zoey is pretty sure at least some of it was written by a programmer she is somewhat familiar with, Jane Tompkins. It is clear the code is very complex and would have been a nightmare to program. At this point Zoey realise she has gleaned everything she can from the memchip here. The only other place that she can think of to get any further information would need access to SEA's internal systems.
OOC:
Hope that's ok for the Advantages. Just as a reminder Zoey has access to the "Corporate Drone" talent which may come in handy here
Jan 24, 2020 1:37 am
Zoey glowers at the code. "This is the kind of shit they always made us write when I was at SEA. This is definitely some SEA shit right here." But then she perks up. "But you see this here?" She turns her rig around so the others can see. "The way there's always an extra space after the commas in the FIND commands?" Greeted with blank stares, Zoey rolls here eyes. "Look, I know the chick who wrote this part. Chick named Jane Tompkins. She owes me for setting her up with this dude named Damiano she was into. Anyway, maybe we can hit her up for some help."
OOC:
Yeah, sounds like a perfect chance to call in Zoey's favor with SEA.

"Sounds good," Mila says. She doesn't get what's going on with the code—physics and mechanics are more her speed—but it's obviously something big if "Simon" was willing to take such a big risk to get it to someone else's attention. "Hit her up and let's see if we can figure out what's going on." She points at the rig. "This smells like someone monkeying with the space elevator, and that's my bread and butter right there."
Jan 24, 2020 5:43 am
Aditi follows the conversation silently. She's nervous - getting caught up in SEA affairs could prove very dangerous for her - but she wants to find out why Simon had to die. He wasn't really a friend but he was nice and he deserved better.
Jan 28, 2020 4:04 pm
As you are contemplating your next move Aditi begins feeling a buzzing coming from the strange comm device that Simon had. It seems that someone called 'Zhang' is calling....
Jan 28, 2020 5:42 pm
Aditi shows the device to everyone and says quietly: "Someone is calling Simon. What now?"
Jan 28, 2020 6:02 pm
"Answer it! Uh—maybe lower your voice an octave or two."
Jan 29, 2020 3:50 pm
Mila nods and adds quickly, "Yeah, answer it and see if you can scoop some information out of them."
Jan 29, 2020 3:53 pm
Aditi looks at the other two with an unsure expression. She doubts she can pull of a convincing male voice but they apparently want her to do it.
With a nervous gulp, she takes the call and, in the deepest tone she can reach, simply opens with: "Uh-huh?"
The less she says, the less likelihood for the one on the other side to notice it's not Simon.

Zoey quickly checks over the device which she determines to be an encrypted comm device and passes a quick scan over it and notes it doesn't seem to be transmitting anything untoward. Zoey hooks the comm device into her rig and a few minutes later manages to break through the layers of encryption. Perhaps unsurprisingly there is nothing on the device other than a log of outbound and incoming calls to one number, the one that just called through.

Checking through the running programmes and subroutines Zoey doesn't note anything that indicates the devices is transmitting it's location but that doesn't mean there isn't a separate tracking device in the casing. It wouldn't take too much though to clone the device onto a PAD so any messages get routed to you if you didn't want to risk carrying the device
Feb 6, 2020 9:35 pm
"There we go," Zoey says as the information comes up. "Not a lot here. Just a log of calls in and out, all to the same number, this Zing or whatever his name was." She looks at the other two. "We wanna keep this thing? I can't rule out a possible tracker. I could route the calls to one of your PADs, but if they're savvy, they may notice the sound quality is different."

"Rerouting sounds safer. We keep the thing in a safe place and we'll still be able to take calls if necessary", Aditi says. "And we should meet up with your friend quickly. I don't think we will go to the junkyard meeting but I would like to keep the option open if possible."

OOC:
Let me know if a check is required to do the rerouting. Then we can head to Zoey's friend's place or office.
Feb 7, 2020 2:46 pm
Zoey makes short work of cloning the comm device and soon it is running on the selected PAD.

As she finishes she makes a quick call to Jane Tompkins. As the call connects a fairly bleary eyed woman appears on screen "Zoey? What....er, hi? How's things?" from her appearance you think your call may have woken her.
OOC:
Jane lives and works in the Ad Astra Arc (Zoey would know this). Ad Astra Arc is a huge arcology where the SEA maintains
many of its corporate offices. It’s also big enough that many corporate employees have apartments within it, allowing them to live their lives without setting foot outside the building, Jane is one such employee. Zoey knows that it's not the kind of place you could just walk into, even to meet with someone who lives there on their off time. Jane would be able to arrange to get you in (with a suitable bit of nudging) for a meet though. Zoey would also know that Ad Astra is completely wired for the SEA’s internal network, so if you do get inside the 300 story monolith that would be another possible line you could pursue.
Feb 7, 2020 6:21 pm
OOC:
So, how does this work with the Favor system? Did cashing in my small favor just get us this woman as a contact (kind of like spending a Story Point might have), or does it guarantee that she has to help us in some small way?

Another way of asking it: Does cashing in the small favor mean she is obligated to talk to us on the phone, but not more? If we want to see her at her home, we have to use social checks or something? Or is the small favor enough to get us into the Ad Astra Arc?
Feb 10, 2020 2:33 pm
OOC:
It guarantees she has to do some small thing for you. Beyond that things are intentionally left pretty vague, after all what is a small favour to one person could be quite the significant ask for someone else.

In this instance it would depend on the information you were trying to get out of her. Zoey would know though that a lot of these types of projects are compartmentalised so although she worked on part of it she may very well not have a lot of information to give you. The favour would definitely be enough for her to let you into the arcology, whether that would be for a meet with her at her apartment or just for her to let you in and then leave you to your own devices would be up to you
Feb 10, 2020 3:43 pm
"Hey, Janey! Yeah, things are good, they're good. I see Damiano's still in the picture from your social feed, so that's good, right?" After a bit of small talk (and reminding Jane of why she owes Zoey a favor), the techie continues: "Look... Me and a couple friends were hoping you could meet us in the Arcology and take a look at something. Some code. I'm worried there may be some sort of leak with y'all, but we wanna make sure before we tell any mucky-mucks. Can you meet us?"

Jane frowns for a moment "How did you....never mind, you can tell me in person." she rubs at her eyes but seems more awake by the moment and seems to think for a second before she does something and the transmission seems to flicker for a second (you assume she's just encrypted the call) "Probably not best for you to come through the front desk until I can see what it is you've got....you remember how we used to sneak out sometimes when we were training? I'll let you in down there and we can talk in one of the offices, you coming in now?" you quickly agree on a time and say your goodbyes before she cuts off the call.

Feb 12, 2020 3:33 pm
"Agreed. Let's get a move on," Zoey agrees.
Feb 12, 2020 3:44 pm
You quickly settle up at the Happy Panda and head out, Zoey leading the way to one of the main transit elevators that foot traffic can use to move between levels. You step out of the elevator and into the dim expanse of the Base De Cayambe undercity. This part of the undercity resembles a vast, echoing cavern. Faint neon light flickers down from the plaza level far overhead, barely illuminating the cracked and broken pavement and burned out groundcars in front of you. The abandoned shells of buildings hundreds of years old stand in front of you, and behind them rises the vast plascrete base of the Ad Astra Arcology.
OOC:
Can someone make me an Easy (1 x Purple die) Survival check to move through the abandoned buildings and get to the base of the arcology. You get a boost die for Zoey's past experience of using similar routes to this to get in and out of the corps premises.
Feb 12, 2020 3:58 pm
Mila leads the way, with help from Zoey, concerned that, in contrast to Aditi's worries, there are already people hunting for them. As they move into the more abandoned parts of the undercity, she makes sure that her macro-wrench is in easy reach in case of trouble.

Zoey leads the way, confident at first but soon begins to realise that several of the routes she used to take have been blocked off in the years since she was last down here. As her directions get increasingly vague Mila makes a judgement call to just head straight towards the Arcology and you soon find yourselves in front of an old maintenance hatch set into the plascrete. Whilst this isn't the location that Jane is expecting you at it's still your best way in.
OOC:
The hatch is secured with a mechanical lock that requires an Average (2 x Purple) Skulduggery check to open without tripping any alarms. I am open to other ideas for you getting through the hatch and remember you can always spend Story Points if needed (for upgrades to your checks as well as other narrative opportunities)
Feb 19, 2020 8:03 pm

The con game version of Zoey has a utility belt and lock picks, but not the version released with the official version of the adventure. Note to self: Buy Zoey some tools at the first opportunity!
OOC:
No worries, seemed really quiet in general on the site over the last week or so so I just figured peeps were busy :)

Well you can always spend a Story Point and the credits to say Zoey previously picked a set of lock picks up so she'd have them to hand now and can add them permanently to her inventory
SavageBob says:
OOC:
Can Zoey try to hack the security system with her rig and Computers?
OOC:
Yeah that would be an option but again I'd be looking for a Story Point to say their is a convenient access point on this side of the door. If you did it that way it would be a Average Computers check to gain access to the back end system and then we'd run it as a Network Encounter. Up to you which way Zoey would proceed
Feb 21, 2020 5:51 pm
"Hold up—is that an access port? Let's see if I can get us in through the systems side of things."
OOC:
Tools cost 200 credits, so I'll have to save up for them. But, sure, let's hack the door. How does it work?
Feb 21, 2020 5:56 pm
OOC:
Start with that Average (two purple dice) Computers check.
Feb 21, 2020 6:09 pm
Zoey jacks her rig into the port and attempts to establish access.
OOC:
Took a boost for Zoey's presumed familiarity with these systems based on her former employment here. Ignore if unwarranted.

Zoey makes quick work of gaining access to the system but nearly trips the security protocols making her sweat a little (take 1 x Strain from the Threat). As she studies the door access system she rather unsurprisingly finds quite a simple setup with just two subsystems, the door control sub-system which is not protected and the intrusion alert sub-system which is protected by an ICE.
OOC:
Ok, you have successfully gained access to the system and can view the subsystems. You are currently at the top level of the system and can spend an incidental to move between the various sub-systems. Once you are in a sub-system you can spend perform an 'Enact Command' maneuvre which the specifics of which can vary depending on the sub-system. In the case of the door control sub-system you would use the maneuvre to open the door but if you don't do something about the intrusion alert system then you'll probably have to expect company real soon.

The other sub-system is protected by an ICE (Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics) and in order to access it you would need to move to that sub-system and 'encounter' the ICE, then you'd need to perform a 'Break ICE' action to get through. Each piece of ice has a program strength. To break the ice, the runner’s attempt must generate a strength that exceeds the strength of the ice they are targeting. To determine that strength, the runner makes an Average Computers check. If the check succeeds, their strength is equal to the number of Successes generated on the check. If you are using an ICEbreaker to help you you add the Strength of that to the number of successes you have rolled.

Zoe has a Crypsis ICEbreaker on her rig which is Strength 3 but is quite a slow and methodical program meaning if you use it to attempt when performing a 'Break ICE' action you also need to spend a Maneuvre, if you don't Cryptis becomes damaged by one step (same penalties apply to using it as normal for equipment damage).

The ICE on the intrusion alert sub-system is a simple ICE Wall Barrier ICE with a Strength of 5 so if Zoey uses Crypsis to try and break the ICE then she would need to get at least 3 successes on an Average Computers (Hacking) check (using the Break ICE Action).

Hope that's all clear, will try and put some more general notes in about the Network Encounter Rules later (they are quite indepth)
Feb 24, 2020 2:57 pm
"OK," Zoey tells the others. "I'm in. Let's see... OK nothing too tough. Let's see if we can't override this security system."
OOC:
So, sounds like an incidental to get to the security layer, then a maneuver to use the Crypsis. Then an action to use Computers (Hacking). Let's see if we can get the 3 extra successes we need.... Custom Code talent adds +1 advantage. Damn. Came up short. 2 Success, 1 Advantage. What does that mean?

Slight clarification - it is an Incidental to move to the protected sub-system but it's just an action to try and break it, the extra Manoeuvre is simply to demonstrate taking time to avoid damaging the Crypsis ICEbreaker (other ICEbreakers would not need you to spend the manoeuvre).

In this case there's not a lot of risk, the ICE is pretty basic and you can keep trying to bypass it until you reach the required level of successes - sufficient Threat's could lead to you being detected though. In a more Structured encounter obviously you'd have wasted your turn and sitting hooked up to the terminal could leave you pretty vulnerable. Your next attempt you could use the Advantage from this roll for a Boost and remember you still have some Story Points if you want to use them

Zoey curses in Spanish. "I'm out of practice with these things." She tries again to override the system, using a slight exploit she thinks she spotted.
OOC:
OK, so do the successes accumulate? Or is it 3 successes on a single roll? I just rolled again on the assumption it was the former, but if not, I'd like to try with a SP.

Based on my look over the rules at the moment it appears not thought I could be wrong, will have another look through them all later to be sure for future runs. For now lets just say you can spend those 3 advantage to have found a vulnerability in the ICE and treat it's Strength as being 1 lower for this attempt so the 2 x Successes are sufficient
Zoey works on her rig quickly and efficiently and Mila and Aditi note that the red status light on the access pad flickers and switches to green before there is a satisfying click and the door opens in front of you all.
Feb 24, 2020 3:40 pm
OOC:
Cool, sounds good. I could see it either way; in combat you don't have to overcome the enemy's wound threshold in one single roll, for instance. But maybe this is more like crafting, where you accumulate boosts on previous attempts until you can finally overcome the thing.
Zoey puts the rig away. "Right behind you," she tells the others.
Feb 24, 2020 3:45 pm
"Nice work!" Mila says, clapping Zoey on the back before squeezing through the access hatch. "Jab me if I'm about to take a wrong turn."
Feb 24, 2020 3:54 pm
Aditi goes in after Mila. This feels very risky and possibly stupid but she's not going to play the scaredy-cat in front of her friends
Feb 25, 2020 2:43 pm
Mila takes the lead through the access corridors and Zoey closes and re-seals the door behind you all. After a short distance Zoey get's her bearings and quickly directs Zoey to the inside of another entrance where an increasingly twitchy looking Jane is standing waiting. As you come into view she jerks in surprise "How did you....never mind. I'm due on shift soon, lets find somewhere where we can look over what you've got". She turns and leads you a short distance into the building you are within and quickly take you into what appears to be a meeting room of some sort. Given the lack of people and covers over most of the furniture you guess this area isn't currently in use.
OOC:
I've created a subforum for rules discussions and clarifications and added a thread about Network Encounters (found some good resources online which cover things quite well)
Feb 25, 2020 3:08 pm
"It's been a minute, Jane," Zoey says with a smile. "We got a bit turned around getting over here." She takes out the rig (or pad?) with the code on it and shows Jane what they found. "Would you believe me if I told you a weird guy in an alley gave this to us? Because that's that happened."
Feb 29, 2020 9:33 pm
"Yeah," Mila says, "And there were some thugs who seemed to be looking for it, so we're a bit uneasy about what might have just dropped into our laps."
Mar 2, 2020 11:45 am
Jane looks somewhat dubious at the explanation of where the code came from but soon gets drawn into taking a look over it. After a few minutes she nods "Yeah. I can see the bits I wrote but this isn't something I worked on directly. Most of my code that's been used in there was taken from an algorithm I developed for prioritising Pod traffic on the Beanstalk but as for the rest of it I'm not sure". The more she looks over it the more worried she seems to get before she takes a step back from the screen. "Look, I'm really not sure what you've got here but it looks way over my pay grade. If you want to have a poke around and see if you can turn anything up then be my guest" she say's gesturing to a nearby wall plug "But you get caught then you're on your own". She moves to the door and glances back before she leaves "Be careful ok? This might be something you'd be best off forgetting you've seen"
OOC:
Zoey would know that details about most code developed internally within the SEA would be stored in a Program Archive and if she can get access to one then she should be able to pull up the details of what the program was developed for. She'll need to make an Average Computers (Hacking) check to gain access to the information storage data network and then an Easy Knowledge (The Net) check to find the right sub-systems within the huge SEA system (further check may be needed at that point if the subsystem is protected by an ICE). She can have a boost die on all her checks in here due to her familiarity with the SEA network
Mar 2, 2020 12:12 pm
"We made it this far", Aditi suggests nervously. "We should at least try to get more info out of the system while we're here."

"Definitely," Mila says, moving to a position next to the door. "You two work on getting what you can out of the system. I'll keep a look out."
Mar 2, 2020 4:57 pm
"Thanks, Janey," Zoey says as the woman leaves. "We'll be out of your hair in no time." As she prepares her rig to jack in, she tells the others, "Wish me luck."
OOC:
Net Search lets me upgrade the first knowledge check twice, along with upgrading the difficulty once. Let's use the advantages to maybe find a more vulnerable place to go next based on the knowledge Zoey finds?

As Zoey jacks in the SEA network opens up before her. Quickly calling up a query she locates the information storage archive and moves into the relevant subnet. She finds 3 subsystems in the archive: the Program Archive, the Petty Cash Account Database, and the Visitor Registration Subsystem - all of them are protected by separate ICE.
OOC:
Zoey can either use the Advantages to get some details about the various ICE on the subsystems before she moves to encounter them or she can keep them for floating boosts.
As Zoe is absorbed in her work Mila and Aditi keep a watch out, for now everything seems very quiet.
Mar 6, 2020 1:52 am
OOC:
Let's get some information on the Program Archive's ice, then.
Zoey's tempted to make a run for the petty cash account—only fitting after what the Beanstalk did to her!—but she doesn't want to jeopardize her relationship with Jane. She focuses her attentions on the Program Archive to see what she can find for now.
Mar 6, 2020 10:53 pm
Zoey sends a gentle probe at the Program Archive sub-system and see's the shimmering pale barrier of an Ice Wall (Strength 5) securing the system.
OOC:
That's one of the Advantages, you still have the other available. Can Mila and Aditi make an Average (2 x Purple/Difficulty dice) Perception check with a Setback (Black) die

Yeah that's fine. Also remember you should be rolling another Boost on Computers checks here due to Zoe's familiarity with SEA's systems

Zoey keeps cracking away at the ice. She finds it remarkably tough to penetrate, but thinks she spots some more weak points.

This is hilarious. Will take all 10 advantages (9 rolled + custom code) for boosts if possible!

Or I'll take the max possible number of boosts and use the remaining advantages to pass boosts to allies if they need to social check these interlopers.

"Someone's coming this way," Mila hisses to Aditi. She can feel herself starting to sweat. "Two people, maybe. What should we do?" Mila's short on ideas that don't involve physical violence, and she doesn't want to hurt some poor sods who just had the bad luck to stumble on them, much less get Zoey's friend in trouble.
Mar 11, 2020 9:49 pm
"We need to distract them and stop them from discovering Zoey. I just have no idea what to tell them", Aditi replies. After thinking for a second, she suggests: "We could fake a medical emergency. That could get them to take the long way around."
Mar 11, 2020 10:20 pm
"You have something specific in mind?" Mila asks. She's not sure she can sell anything too complex. "I could collapse into the hallway and pretend to be unconscious, I guess." Of course, it'd be just their luck if the people coming were security or some kind of good Samaritans, but it's not like Mila has any better ideas.
Mar 11, 2020 10:32 pm
"Something like that", Aditi says with an unsure shrug. "I could pretend to treat you. Hopefully that would get them to give us some space. We could also pretend you have something contagious to give them more reason to avoid us but that would increase the risk of them calling for security."
Mar 14, 2020 5:32 pm
"Okay," Mila says, "If they keep getting closer I'll fall over and pretend to have a coughing fit. Hopefully that will make them wary enough to change course."
OOC:
Should we prepare for a Deception check?
