Forgive me if this has been said because I have the bad habit of skim reading. On the case of character investment, if you forgive the chaos of the players lives and etc. I think one thing that might have helped with personal investment might have been finding a way to tie in our backstories a bit more. Perhaps some choice that would've driven a divide between the teams based on each characters personal ethics or goals. I know I was personally hoping to encounter remnants of the cult Nim was raised from or a chance to explore my history with Rohim. What might have also been interesting is to force each character to address whatever vice or negative quirk was associated. In the way Raezhon at some point opted to phase into the dome despite it being the norm to hide overt uses or examples of symbiosis of Numenera and nature like that.
Just from a storyteller perspective, the one off format does not lend itself well to heavy personal investment. Every story, however, has opportunities to purposely go off the rails to add depth and dynamics and etc. so if the "going off the rails" moment was motivated by character details we would have had little choice but to buy in a bit more.
