[IC] Sudden Payback (Session 2)

With Marv's help, Hank gets the weights hung just right to give a big surprise to any intruders. It's a delicate process, though, and the pair lose control over one particular dumbbell, which crashes to the floor, putting a big dent in it..

Afterward, Marv is able to easily roll a dumpster to block the alleyway between the One-Two and the next building.
OOC:
So, the boost and assistance pushed this to a success with 1 threat, which is the property damage. I almost asked for an Athletics check for the dumpsters, but it looks like most city dumpsters have wheels, so should be pretty simple to move one.

Time enough for the soap if you want. The fire escape might take more time, but let me know if you want to try.

OOC:
I'd probably help with the Fire Escape so that's it'll still be up to firecode or repairable.

OOC:
I think this one will require a social check to convince Lance to let you do it (RPP for Charm, PPP for Deception -- both with a setback due to the damage from the fallen weight). Altering the fire escape would automatically make the structure non-compliant legally (until repaired), so keep that in mind.

OOC:
I'm talking about helping Hank with this one.

Fire escape: Average (PP) Skulduggery check. I'll accept Mechanics as well. There's always getting a rope ladder also attached at the top, I was under the impression it get modified from weight at the bottom for entry up versus access down.

OOC:
Kermit mentioned modifying the fire escape so it couldn't hold the weight of several people at once, which would be modifying the structure beyond legal requirements. You could try to jimmy-rig the bottom layer to prevent easy access from the ground level—that, too, would presumably also make it a violation of fire code, though. In short, I don't think there's anything you can do to alter the fire escape that won't make it a violation of fire code.

So, waiting on checks for the soap, and potentially for convincing Lance to let you alter the fire escape, and then the check to do that. Then we'll need some sort of check for whoever's going to be on the roof as lookout (a Stealth check to hide and a Perception check to watch for approaching folks.)
May 21, 2020 9:55 pm
"Sorry about the floor, Lance. On the bright side, we know the plan works. When the weight whacks 'em, I figure they'll end up a little worse than dented." He smirks at Lance, and seeing no smile, turns away to gently place the weight back on the rack. Sheesh, like he's never made a mistake.

He walks into the supply closet, then returns with a value size bottle of dish soap. "By the way, back door's out of commission. Hopefully they'll try the same trick this time." Hank squirts soap liberally on the floor in about a 10-foot square inside the door, then sets a bucket of water beside it for easy pouring just before the meetup.
OOC:
Come to think of it, the fire marshal probably isn't a big fan of trapping one of two exits to the building, either...

Happy to help with the fire escape if we want to go that route, but I'll let someone else try talking Lance into it.

... and as it turns out, I could apparently use a hand with this one too.
OOC:
GM edit: Adding a boost for Guy's help.

Guy chuckles at all of these boobytraps and helps Hank set up his ingenious ideas.

OOC:
Narrating the fact that the boost pushed things into success territory here, and using those advantage to make this trap fire-marshal compliant per the chatter!
Right before Hank pours out a whole bucket of liquid soap on the floor, Guy has an idea: Why not prop the bucket up on a stand near the door instead? If that door is opened from the outside, the trap springs, but otherwise, the floors stay dry and the exit available.

Lance grumbles about the booby traps, especially as chatter starts up about modifying the fire escape.
OOC:
OK, let's have that Charm check to convince Lance to let you do the fire escape (or do it secretly?) if you still want to try that. Then we should be ready for the traps to be sprung...

As the group talks to Lance, Marv stands at the bottom of the fire escape, staring up at the heights from which he fell not so long ago. "C'mon, Marv. It was just a fluke." He says to himself, "Ain't no conquering fears without facing em." He loops a length of climbing rope over his shoulder and begins to climb the fire escape and shouts back into the building. "I got Lookout. If things get hairy I'm gonna try the same trick as last time. You boys mind rearranging those pads?"

Marv tries to get the skylight open and secure the rope so that he can use it to reppelle down if he needs to make a fast entrance.
OOC:
let me know stealth and perception difficulties and I'll roll em

Marv finds that Red's been busy, as the skylight's already covered over with a semi-opaque sheet of plastic. He finds a likely spot to tie off the rope (since the previous one has been cut down) and does his best to secure it.
OOC:
There's no obvious "rope tying" skill, but I'll take Skulduggery, Mechanics, or Athletics, depending on which you prefer. Easy (P) difficulty.
May 25, 2020 2:41 pm
OOC:
Bump. Marv can give me a check for the rope, and we can advance to the meetup if that's OK. The fire escape alterations may be too complicated to do before the baddies arrive.

OOC:
my bad. Here's athletics.

For that 1 advantage, let's say Marv is able to tie the rope without it being obvious from the interior that there is one up there.
Waiting Suspense Music

The stage is set. With Marv scouting out the streets from three stories up and the Pantones hiding in an abandoned building a couple blocks away, Max, Guy, and Hank try to keep Jimmy and Lance calm inside the gym. Jimmy, at least, seems resigned to his fate. He sits on a weight bench, slouching forward, sipping a cup of over-sugared coffee from a Solo cup. Lance paces in the training ring, its surface still damaged from the fracas a few days earlier.

As the appointed meet time approaches, Marv scans the streets...
OOC:
Eskaton, can you give me an Average (PP) Perception check with a setback for darkness, but a boost for the Pantones helping as lookouts? This'll represent your ability to detect unusual car or foot traffic as the hour approaches.

Everyone else, let me know where you plan to be. If anyone wants to try a pep talk, this is time for an Average Leadership check. :)
May 27, 2020 9:09 pm
Marv hunches as low as he can on the roof without sacrificing his field of view. "I am the night." He growls to himself, holding a straight face for all of a second before he breaks into a laugh, "What a sight we must be." He thinks, scanning the streets below. "I really hope we overprepared. If we need all of this..." He bows air out through his lips in an 'oof' and waits for the action to begin.
OOC:
Did you want a stealth too? If so, what difficulty?
OOC:

OOC:
Hmm, how about an incognito way to alert the others to what I see? I'd flip a Story point for a walkie talkie, or maybe a system of knocks or something?

Watching Lance pace nervously in the ring, Hank glances around at the others and then taps his knuckle on the fight bell, making a tiny ding. As Lance looks up in alarm and he sees the others look over, Hank smiles and points up at the portrait of Phil Wakamatsu.

"When I was a kid, old Phil was an inspiration to me. I wished he was my dad, if you believe that. My dad... he was one of those guys got pushed around. He let it happen and let it break him little by little. By the time I got to know him, he believed Drummond was as broken as he was."

He reaches up to scratch beneath his beard, pulling at the graying hairs. "But not Wakamatsu. He knew that the people of Drummond were good, and strong, if he could just show them how. He looked at our beautiful old beater of a town and he fixed her up. Everybody knew we weren't New York or L.A. or Chicago, but he showed us what Drummond could be. We got pride, and we got grit, and we got strong hands that'll knock you out if you push us."

"Well, that's what this crooked cop has been doing. Petrovich has been pushing and pushing for months, trying to make people live in fear. And he thinks he can do what he wants 'cause he's got a badge?"

Hank punches the mat, making the ring vibrate. "I say HELL. NO. That ain't what the One Two is about. It ain't what we're about. And that sure as hell ain't what Rumble City is about! I say we show this goon what happens when you push around the good people of Drummond. When you throw your weight around, we don't get scared. When you try to break us down, we fix each other up. And when you abuse your tiny amount of power and try to hurt our friends, we get ready to rumble."

Hank takes one last look back up at the portrait of Wakamatsu and nods. "I don't know much, but I know that." Then he raps on the bell once more and kneels by the front window where he's got a good view of the street, and can release the rope holding the weights if needed.

Guy is hanging out in the office near the service entrance. If there's a CCTV system he'll be watching that, otherwise he'll be peering down the hall, keeping an eye on the service entrance.

OOC:
I was assuming you all have cell phones with texting capabilities. But for 2 advantage, we can say you've found a way to use it without drawing attention to yourself (like from the glowing screen). Essentially depriving anyone passing by of what would have been a boost.

I think Hank's speech is worth a boost on Lance's initiative check, when it comes to that. :)
Hank's words reverberate through the empty gym, earning a shrug from Grinning Jimmy. But Lance stops pacing for a moment, watching his friend lay out the stakes, the gauntlet Wakamatsu set down 40 years ago. He glances up at the portrait of the martial arts master, still hanging since the catastrophe of a news conference. He sighs. "You're right. Let's show this sumbitch what it means to mess with Rumble City!"

[ +- ] Gym Layout (before modifiations)
11 PM comes and goes. Maybe Petrovich is just late. Or maybe he isn't going to show. But then Marv gets a text on his silenced phone.
[ +- ] text messages
Judging by the message, Marv realizes the two "visitors" must be headed toward the gym's front entrance, to the east, opening onto Wakamatsu.
OOC:
So, Stealth check if you want to try to avoid them seeing you. RPP difficulty, with two boosts for cover and darkness.
