The Triad

Everything is a blur. The rush out of the beast, Halla's incredible 5-mile flight (he embraces her gratefully and calls her magnificent when they land), being shunted out of the Spider Queen's lair, then getting fetched by the brilliant Thaistius.

Disoriented, Zenithral staggers then falls to his hands and knees, bowing at Ilmater's appearance. Part of him itches to say something...About himself? About Zariel? About Ilmadia?

But with the smile from The One Who Endures, the feeling evaporates. Now was not the time. They had shared their gratitude's before, and they would likely have opportunity to do so again. For now, however, no words were needed.

Moments later, Zenithral stammers as he feels a surge of new power and tries to process the whole Triad before him.

"Ah, er, so..."

(Zenithral is now a 4th-level cleric; he now has a +5 Dexterity modifier and two 3rd-level spell slots!)

His wide eyes shift back and forth frantically, then he looks up. "...You three are fighting Gruumsh...and we three are fighting his proxy...Who is his proxy? And when is the battle?! We have time to...rest beforehand...right?"

Alalla intends to kneel, but collapses to her knees beside Zenithral instead, disoriented from their dizzying travel. She would have fallen to her hands as well, save for the Eye clutched between them.

Any breath she might have caught during Torm's explanation is taken away again by his words. Zenithral stammers, and Alalla can't tell if she is calmer or more shocked than he.

"Yes, my Lord."
May 18, 2021 1:44 am
Aribeth stares with wide eyes, then quickly does as Zenithral and Alalla do. Kneeling, she manages to speak. "It will be the honor of my life, Lord of Justice."

She gasps as she is flooded with divine strength.
May 18, 2021 2:49 am
Torm answers Zenithral’s first question. "His chosen proxy will be his most powerful warrior among any of the realms over which he has dominion. And he has dominion over numerous worlds."
May 18, 2021 2:50 am
"The battle is NOW, aasimar." Tyr draws a massive sword from a sheathe on his back. He holds it easily in his good hand. "We go to the battleground that Gruumsh has chosen, according to what was agreed upon."
May 18, 2021 2:52 am
Red blood drips lightly onto the white floor as Ilmater takes several limping steps toward Zenithral. He rests a tired hand on the archer’s shoulder and looks him in the eyes. "Thus is our Road to walk. We carry on so that others might rest. But fear not, Zenithral, for there will be peace when we are done. One day. Until then… we must endure."

The Broken God smiles through parched lips. "And to endure it well, why don’t you favor us with one of your famous speeches, now before we six depart?"
May 18, 2021 3:47 am
Halla half-raises a hand to intervene. Somehow, she is able to stop herself. Blinking tears from her eyes, she clasps her symbol of Sylvanus with a white-knuckled grip.

She nods at Zenithral. You can leave me. Just this once.
May 18, 2021 3:47 am
Erevain gets down on his knees next to Alalla, facing her. He clasps her hand in his. "No matter the champion Gruumsh musters, I would never bet against you. Not with friends watching your back." He smiles, though his eyes are wet. "Go and free our people."
May 18, 2021 4:12 am
"Oh, er...a speech! he stammers, in awe at the humble, bleeding god before him.

Whenever his followers heal someone without taking it upon themselves... he wonders, looking at Ilmater's numerous cuts. ...does he take it instead?

Zenithral clears his throat, then inhales deeply.

"Yes, let's see..." Forcing himself to ignore the fact that the Triad was asking him for inspirational words, he begins.

"The Triad are unique among gods," he starts. "Every god has their purposes, but few are united in any of them. Together, you seek not to tear down, but to unite and build up, in your own unique ways." He pauses. "And now we seek to unite further."

"Hatred. Rage! Sorrow..." he continues, voice rising. "From gods, from elves and orcs, and from everyone else unwilling to see that there is more to an individual than their blood and behavior. This does not need to continue, and nor shall it. We and our peoples are more than we are. For we are not just our present, but our future!"

He pauses again. "This quest to make right was was wronged. To free the oppressed. And to build new generations...I am humbled to be part of this great quest..." He furrows his brow, purses his lips and nods, then grins.

"So let us see about humbling the One-Eyed God."

Tyr beckons, and Torm and Ilmater join him. The three of them recite a powerful blessing that words can’t possibly describe, filling the three proxies with divine light.

Due to the nature of Trueheart, everyone’s hit points are healed up to their max. Due to the Triad casting a 10th level Aid spell, the three proxies have their hit point max raised by 45 points each.

"Your battlefield is the Death of Memory. It is not an easy place to do battle, for there the ice is made of the frozen River Styx. But at least you should not have to fear Ocanthus’ winds. They make your Dale feel like summer in Calimshan, and are quite deadly."

Torm draws his own sword. "Farewell, Heroes of the Triad." His blade gleams with light, and then Erevain, Halla, and Fenthick are left alone in Trueheart.

Zenithral, Alalla, and Aribeth land on slick, uneven footing, a deep chill assaulting them like ice-water on an ant. They are on the deck of some sort of ship, in a huge cavern of ice. The ship is stuck fast at an angle in the ice below. The sound of furious wind whips through the occasional hole in the ceiling.

But it is the figure before them who commands their attention. An overly-large, brutish ogre stands before them holding a long, black spear with a wicked tip. No, not an ogre. One bloodshot eye glares at them from the center of the brute’s face, while enormous orcish tusks protrude from its gash of a mouth. This creature must be some mix of orcish and giant blood, almost certainly cyclopian. Fully 12 feet tall, and nearly that wide, its muscles would have put Ug to shame.

One-Eye lets out a bellowing roar of rage and bloodlust, then leaps forward to attack with surprising speed!

Round 1 Player Phase!
OOC:
Okay, so unless you have resistance or immunity to cold damage or something else that negates frigid weather, make a DC 18 Constitution save at the end of your turn or gain a level of exhaustion.

Also, if you move more than half your speed along the ground on your turn, you must make a DC 18 Dexterity save or fall prone. Every time you fall prone, there’s a chance you end up going overboard.

"Greetings!" Zenithral brandishes his bow, then his whole being ignites with radiance as spectral wings unfurl and carry him smoothly into the air. "Let us begin!" his voice echos.

(Zenithral uses Radiant Soul and flies 30 feet back and up.)

With white eyes and weightless, silvery hair, he drifts up and away from One-Eye and utters a Celestial word of protection and vigor.

(Zenithral casts Shield of Faith on Alalla. Next round, Alalla can use her reaction to make a weapon attack and will gain +2 AC until he loses concentration.)

Finally, three arrows fly from quiver to bow, then streak from bow to the towering champion.

The first strikes true with a burst of light, but the other two arrows deflect off the impressive armor of the charging figure.

(Zenithral uses Action Surge and deals 29 damage—11 piercing and 18 radiant.)

Alalla takes Erevain's face in her hands, weak with gratitude. "It is a relief to know they are in your hands when not in mine, sharuhk." She kisses him, then stands for Zenithral's speech.

While he speaks Al tightens armour straps and checks her equipment. She takes off a gauntlet to retrieve a platinum ring from her finger as Zenithral speaks his final line. She is unable to keep a wicked, tusked grin from her face.

"Here," Alalla says, offering the ring to Aribeth. "I can take a bit more of a beating than you or Zen, and we need your sword as long as possible. Until we all walk away, ideally." She smiles awkwardly.

Alalla's heavy body and plate armour help her to stick the landing as they appear in the frozen place. She feels the cold immediately, but as she glances at her companions she knows that they feel it worse than she. (Al's Mantle of the Coming Storm protects her from the extreme cold, and she does not have to make a save.)

As Zenithral takes flight, Alalla ignites her sword (bonus action). She stands her ground as the giant charges.

And then she strikes.

Three heavy blows accompanied by searing flame are targeted at the muscles and tendons in his legs. Even if he survives this, these wounds will ensure he never fights again.

Al deals 46 slashing and 20 fire damage. One-Eye must make a DC 19 Wis save or be frightened of Al until the end of her next turn.

Al has a Warding Bond with Aribeth.

Aribeth's swords whip into her hands as One-Eye leaps forward. "By Tyr's Missing Hand, you will lose today, beast!" She throws herself into the fight with zeal, scoring a radiant hit on the enemy's side.

She uses Vow of Enmity and a 2nd level smite. One-Eye takes 12 slashing damage and 18 radiant damage.

Midleap, the heroes' monstrous foe hurls his spear at rising Zenithral. Thunder rumbles as the weapon flies through the air with tremendous force, then slams home into Zenithral's thigh (Zen takes 16 piercing and 28 thunder damage). Immediately the spear reappears in One-Eye's hands, and as he lands before Alalla and Aribeth he is already on the attack. One terrible thrust takes Alalla in the shoulder, and his foot kicks out to catch Aribeth in the chest (After resistance, Aribeth takes 16 and 12 thunder.). Relentless as an avalanche, he rips the spear free and swings the butt end around to slam into the side of Alalla's helmet (All told, Al takes 65 physical and 50 thunder). Every blow he strikes rings with the peal of magical thunder.

Attacks rain down on him in the form of swords and arrows as the heroes stand their ground, and he roars in fury. That roar builds in supernatural power, splintering the wooden railings, then releases in a wave of thunder and lightning that rocks the ship, shatters ice, and overwhelms the three heroes. The very air around Zenithral shakes, threatening to bring him back to ground (unless he turns that fail into a save, he will fall prone, probably to the ice, and take full damage). Meanwhile, the torrent pushes Alalla up against the ship's cabin, crushing her against the sturdy structure (unless she turns that fail into a save, she will get exploded into the cabin and be knocked prone, taking full damage). Aribeth is blasted right over the side of the ship, falling to the ice below (After resistance, Aribeth takes 13 lightning and 11 thunder damage. Al takes the same amount).

Alalla remembers then that Gruumsh is not only the orc god of war, but also of storms.

Through the warding bond, Alalla feels a spike of mental pain from Aribeth (Aribeth and Al each take 9 psychic damage. Aribeth is also memory drained).

Player Phase Round 2!!
OOC:
Okay, so NOW Zen's Shield of Faith spell kicks in, and I think Al can also make an extra attack because of Order Domain? Also, you can go ahead and re-roll those saves with Inspiration or Indomitable or whatever if you want to. If you save, take only half of the lightning/thunder damage from the roar. If Zen falls to the ice, he needs to make a DC 18 Int save or be subject to the same things that happened to Aribeth (damage and memory drain).

Zenithral spins in the air as a massive spear strikes him, then cries out as he sees the same spear pierce through Alalla's armor, threatening to impale her. Tendrils of light streak from the half-orc warrior into Zenithral. His white form mixes with red as he gasps, taking the injury instead of her. (Martyr's Empathy to take 51 damage instead of Alalla.)

Then the thunder and lightning strikes. With a fierce determination, he twists himself amidst the furious winds and maintains his flight. (Indomitable to reroll and pass the CON save.)

Trembling, Zenithral descends to hover just above the ship's deck, still keeping his distance. He takes a moment to observe the battlefield, and after seeing Aribeth fall overboard, an idea starts to form..If they can get him off the ship and into the Styx...surely his weight would break the ice!

"Get him off the ship!" he shouts.

With divine power, he straightens himself and launches a desperate, radiant volley. Purple and white sparks fly and arrows strike true, but his banishing magic seems all but null on this god of war and storm.

(One-Eye takes 57 damage—39 piercing and 18 radiant. Zenithral uses Banishing Arrow, but to no effect.)

A look and maybe a word from Alalla gets him to question the strategy. He can see the ferocity in her eyes. Even if she goes down, she'll go down doing what she does best. The towering creature was fearless and was unlikely to budge, neither to magic nor trickery...but like most anything in the multiverse, it could certainly fall to Alalla's blade.

"...Or let him taste a Cagebreaker's might."

With that, he draws on Ilmater's strength, sealing some of his wounds, preparing himself to take more... (Second Wind to regain 23 HP)

Alalla grits her teeth in determination, sliding back slightly at the enormous roar, but staying upright. (Al passes her save with indomitable.) Gruumsh may be the god of storms, but she was born in Icewind Dale. She has weathered storms all her life.

Protecting Aribeth so directly has been more damaging that Alalla expected, but she has to choose between dismissing her spell or pressing her attack. She does she does best.
