The 2nd mission

Apr 19, 2020 5:46 am
The warp travel aboard the Hallowed Sword as been uneventful, only long and tense as all those travel should be.
You noticed a few more kill-teams are in the vessel with you, but you do not know them.

You are told that you will reach your destination tomorrow, so it is the time for the last check ups and rituals before heading for battle.

TheVagrant sent a note to Krajin
Apr 19, 2020 4:58 pm
Bannus keeps to himself for the entire travel, never bothering to know anything about the other kill-teams or the members of his own. His days are spent in solitary prayer, training and going through all the proper rituals to prepare himself and his equipment for action in the field.
Apr 20, 2020 9:06 am
The moment is there, you entered the Stormraven which headed swiftly toward the planet.

The interior of the Stormraven is filled with raucous sirens as the gunship’s machine spirits warn of imminent planetfall. Your squad has completed last minute armour and restraint checks and recited the prayers of orbital deployment, and now the interior bucks and shakes as the gunship hits the target world’s outer atmosphere. As the heat rises and flames lick the view port, you mouth the last lines of your prayers, surrendering yourself to the planetfall.
The next ten minutes are all sound and fury as every surface vibrates violently. The heat rises and your helmet displays inform you that you are experiencing forces that would turn a normal man to boneless pulp. But you are Space Marines, and this is what you were created to do. All too soon, the tremors subside and the flames enveloping the gunship’s exterior fade away, affording you your first glimpse of the surface of the target world.
Truly, the Great Devourer has desecrated this place. A landscape once swathed in verdant forests and fertile plains is now reduced to barren wastes, the bilious yellow-green fog of the consumption process casting all in an actinic glow. Rivers of digestive fluid snake across the violated land, while twisting capillary towers stretch up into the air. Spore chimneys disgorge thick, noxious columns of vapour, and dark flocks of airborne creatures are visible in the distance.
The time for prayers is over. Now is the time for bold deeds, for the mission is all.
OOC:
The Stormraven will need to be piloted until the landing zone his identified.
It has a front-mounted, twin linked assault cannon and four missiles controlled by the pilot.
As well as a twin-linked heavy bolters in an overhead turret.
The ship's auspex can be used to detect groups of tyranids before they can see you through the smoke.
Librarians can use psyniscience to pinpoint the origin of the signal.
There will be a check every hour until you find the zone or attract too much attention. There is a crew do fill the positions if you do not, but they are not Space Marines.
Tell your positions and happy hunting!
Apr 20, 2020 12:33 pm
Let's have each player chime in the three or four positions.
-- heavy bolters filters in the turret
-- working the Auspex
-- piloting

The librarians can focus on doing the psyniscience checks

The other for should state a preference. First, do we have anyone trained in using the auspex or piloting a gunship? The rest can take turns manning the turret.
Apr 20, 2020 12:55 pm
Mykhaal installs himself in the heavy bolter turret, ready to unleash hell on any ennemy....

Bannus will work the Auspex, unless the leader orders him otherwise. He can man the bolters if needed, with piloting being the last option.

In this case, a co-pilot to use a front mounted weapon if need be seems reasonable.

The Stormraven spend 1 hour circling around successfully avoiding the masses of flying tyranids using the toxic smoke as cover.
In addition to the hordes of gargoyles, the scans shows presence of very large tyranid flyer, about 30 meters long.

THe Shadow of the Warp is strong making the signal hard to pinpoint. However, Bannus detected, barely, some energy emission east of your position before losing it.
OOC:
I'll need the same rolls again for the next hour of search

The scans are inconclusive in this part of the sky, making the flying more hazardous

The librarians work conjointly to narrow down the origin of the signal through the influence of the hive mind and make good progress, at this rate, they expect to have the landing zone found in an hour or two.

It appears that your tactical maneuvering allowed you to avoid additional skirmishes.

Eventually, Brother Lucian and Brother Ragnar identify the general region from where the signal is originating. From the air, neither the scans nor the eyes detects anything other that smoke, emptiness and devastation in the landscape below. Whatever is there is well hidden and will need to be investigated on foot.

You identify a good landing area with minimal activity that seem your best bet to get off the Stormraven.
How do you proceed?
May 2, 2020 10:14 pm
Bannus takes a quick moment to get a last glance on the landing zone, before turning to the team's leader for suggestions while pondering his own ideas.
OOC:
Just to make sure I'm reading this right, we can't actually land the Stormraven and must probably make a drop ourselves, correct?
May 2, 2020 10:39 pm
Lucian orders those with jump packs to land and secure the site for the Stormraven. This will be Cloten and any others that brought jump jets.

"Alright, the signal came from around here. Well need eyes all around us, and we need to locate caves or buildings where the equipment or survivors may have been secured from annihilation by the tyranid biomass harvesting. Any questions, save them for later. Go!"
May 2, 2020 10:40 pm
Cloten grabs his gear and as the Stormraven drops within a thousand feet of the ground, jumps out, piloting his way to the ground with Bolter at the ready.

The Stormraven can land without issue
May 3, 2020 12:26 pm
Under Brother Lucian's direction, some Battle-Brothers fly down and the Stormraven follow shortly after. Security perimeter is established quickly and no immediate threats are found.

Looking around at your surroundings, you find that the surface of the world of Khnum appears even more hellish from the ground
than it did from the air. The ground is crawling with writhing,vine-like roots and tiny creatures, little more than stomachs on
multiple legs gnaw away at what tiny scraps of bio-mass remain. The land is a blasted desert, columns of yellow-green vapour
ghosting across your vision and making it impossible to see more than a hundred metres. Occasionally, the mists part, and you
catch a glimpse of the true extent of the world’s devastation, before the fog descends mercifully once more.

From your position, you noticed a crater in the south, a valley in the west and a rocky wasteland in the east. The Stormraven pilot ask permission to take his position in orbit to await your call.

What do you do?
May 3, 2020 1:00 pm
Lucian releases the ship to return to orbit. "Come Battle-Brothers, we have three landmarks to guide us. The crater may mark the location of something that was targeted, the valley may be our best chance for caves, and the rocky wasteland could hide an army in its shadows. What say you?"
May 4, 2020 6:01 am
"I say we look into the Crater first. For we may find some answers to what we seek." The Rune Priest speaks up.
May 4, 2020 6:36 pm
Bannus simply nods in agreement, suspecting that the crater may have been created by some sort of psychic blast when the signal was transmitted.
May 4, 2020 6:43 pm
OOC:
Remember that, even with the difficult environment, an awareness or auspex roll could give out more information
May 4, 2020 6:53 pm
OOC:
Somehow figured the auspex device as part of the ship. Can we carry it with us or make a last use before it takes off? If so I'll edit my post and include dice rolls
May 5, 2020 8:40 am
OOC:
You are right about the ship's auspex, but I double-checked the requisition and Guts carry a portable auspex. Cloten also has magnoculars.
May 5, 2020 11:12 am
After doing a quick check on all his equipment and his scout armor, I'll go scout ahead. I'll keep in touch over Vox and tell you if the way is clear. Guts hands an auspex to Bannus, You'll probably be able to get more milage of this than me. With that Guts starts toward the crater, rapidly being difficult to check thanks to his cameleoline cloak...

Cloten is an advance scout trained to lead the way to the enemy, to smash into and behind their lines while the force marches to catch up. Cloten and Guts branch out further in two direction while the rest of the squad maintain the perimeter and wait for more informations.

Bannus scan's reveal that the soil and air is contaminated with microscopic xenos particules digesting the planet as far as the auspex can go. The immediate scan show no activity, until, after patiently reading and adjusting the auspex, a very slight and slow movement is detected far in the rocky wastelands.

Cloten detect only desolation and emptiness. Not a single sign of activity or even past human presence.

Guts gets a visual on the crater. It looks naturally formed in the transformation of the dying planet. It is empty about 300 meter wide with sharp lip on most sides.

You can practically feel the planet dying all around you gasping for its last breath.

May 14, 2020 12:17 pm
Lucian patches the seals to his armor, and helps Cloten do the same and double check his own, especially in the back.

"We'll go to the valley next. Cloten, I want you and Guts in the scout armor to range ahead. You take lead, he'll follow. If you see anything like this jump back to Guts and report."
May 14, 2020 12:21 pm
After the armor had been patched, Cloten gives Guts a big goofy grin, not that you can see it in the helmet, and bangs him on the shoulder.

"Ready?"

He checks his magnoculars, chain sword and bolter. Then tests his jump pack for damage, making a short hop.
May 15, 2020 8:00 pm
The team double back toward the landing site and turn west toward the valley. Cloten and Guts take a considerable lead to scout.

The valley is deep, dead and empty. The scout team enter it carefully. There is no trace of moving tyranid. However, Guts eventually spot an imprinted footprint that appears to be human. The dying soil make it difficult to follow, but his skills are up to the task. The tracks lead to entrance of a network of caves.

What do you do?
May 15, 2020 8:22 pm
Cloten looks at the caves. "Nicely done. Call it in, Guts, I'll keep an eye on the caves." He finds a good spot to watch as much of the entrances as he can, bolter at the ready.
May 16, 2020 6:32 pm
Guts activates his vox, Guts to Lucian, we found human tracks leading to some caves. Want us to wait for you or go ahead ?
May 16, 2020 6:50 pm
"Hold position and case the threat vectors. We will be there shortly."

To the rest of the crew, he says, "Our first lead. Let's double time it. If they have been able to survive the tyranid scourge, they're defenses must be formidable."

He leads them in a double time match to catch the scouts.
May 16, 2020 7:59 pm
The kill-team reach the scout rapidly at the caves network entrance. No activity has been noticed.

What do you do?
May 16, 2020 8:25 pm
How many have entrances are there, particularly large enough for a human to enter?
May 16, 2020 8:56 pm
There are a few but only one hold traces of a footprint.
May 16, 2020 11:27 pm
Lucian orders Guts and Cloten to enter, with Mykhaal backing them up. Brannus and Ragnar follow them with Lucian as rear guard.

"Remember, we're looking for humans so verify your targets."
May 17, 2020 7:10 pm
You explore the caves and find a single human, obviously native to the planet. He is lying beside the only pool of clear water you've seen on the planet, wounded and dying. He is garbed in primitive attire and his skin is covered by a mixture of warpaint and blood.
He is muttering to himself in what seem like a debased form of Gothic, but sometime stop the drink some water, before continuing his self talk.

He has not noticed you yet. What do you do?

While Mykhaal translates what the man says to the group, Guts will slowly advance on him, showing the medicae pouch...
May 18, 2020 5:25 am
After a few moments, Mykhaal realizes that the man is repeating the same long prayer over and over for his god to take care of his and his family's soul in the afterlife.
May 18, 2020 11:15 am
Ragnar listened as they advanced on the cave and the man within, he wasn't too interested at first at the man's ramblings until it was translated. A survivor? This must of been some kind of feral world or something. He will however reach out to feel if this man is the active psyker that they were hunting!

Cloten pulls out a ration bar from his supply and hands it to the man.
May 22, 2020 10:17 pm
@Krakin You do not notice any psychic power around the individual. He seems to be a normal man from a primitive culture.

Guts take care of the native's wound. He is dying from multiple wounds and blood loss caused by Tyranid weapons. He has a few hours to live, maybe a day. You notice upon the examination that all the wounds are warrior's wound, this primitive man with is kin face the Xenos in combat in a brave but doomed effort.

The man smells the ration and starts nibbling on it. His eyes slowly starts to close as exhaustion sets in. You can notice that his face is content and you hear him mutter the archaic word for Angels under his breath.
OOC:
If nobody ask him question, he is gonna drift to sleep and you can continue your exploration.

Bannus is aware of his shortcomings when it comes to language or social skills. Not like he's the talkative type anyway...
May 24, 2020 5:50 pm
"Guts, stay and watch the man. This is our point alpha. Cloten, Bannus, outside and circle these caves, look for tracks. Cloten can take the high ground but stay close enough to see each other and back each other up. I want to know where this man came from. Mykhaal, stay with Guts. I want two man teams. The team get into motion.

The caves are empty apart from the lone man and the pool of clear water.

You follow the tracks. The man came alone from the east.

A brood of gargoyle can be heard flying in the smoke over your position. From the noise, they are very high and it is unlikely that they could spot you with the limited visibility.
May 24, 2020 11:16 pm
Guts takes this time to try and communicate with the man, he speaks slowly, with simple words and adds hands gestures...

Are you alone ? Did someone else survive?

Ragnar nods to Lucien and will follow after him, his Force Sword is drawn in one hand and his Bolt pistol in the other, the Rune Priest is ready for a fight but not keen on engaging the Nids without cause. They are after all, a ferocious foe unlike most others. "Then lets go. Make it quick, quiet and we can avoid Tyranids."
May 26, 2020 4:47 am
The man respond slowly, picking on a few simple words. "Alone... yes. Survive ... no" He shakes his head in sadness and despair at the destruction of everyone he knew.
May 26, 2020 6:52 am
"Just his tracks, coming in from the East. Any psychic readings on him?" the voice of Bannus comes in through the vox, an unusually long sentence from the otherwise laconic Tech Marine.

Guts mentions that it could refer to a Malanthrope, a recently discovered genus of tyranid with an apparent fonction of finding specific genetic information from fallen warriors to reinforce the Hive.

If it is the case, Malanthrope have been flagged as high priority soft targets with a standing order to kill them on sight with extreme prejudice.

Lucian organises the squad to move forward again, scouts ahead, the others staggered in supporting formation.
Jun 7, 2020 5:57 am
The team moves back toward the rocky wasteland they spotted earlier in the east.

Guts and Mykhaal positions themselves just under 150m from the target. Mykhaal finds himself a rock big enough to give him some cover and allowing him to brace his heavy bolter on it. The team is slightly taken aback with how little damage their full assault did on the creature.
OOC:
The team cohesion lose 4 point.
As you aim again, you resist the powerful presence of the beast by relying on your trust in your brother beside you or simply by the strength of your will.
OOC:
No fear roll is needed for the non-squad leader. The influence of fear is negated by the squad mode as long as you are near a battle-brother and there is at least 1 cohesion pont left.

Character in solo mode suffer an ongoing penalty to willpower test signifying the mental and spiritual effort of fighting the unholy pressure.
You have time to each deliver another attack before the creature start moving.
OOC:
First attack was a "surprise round" and you act first in the first round, so you effectively act twice before it. This is a master class foe, so don't be afraid to use some ressource and remember that you can roleplay your demeanours to replenish your fate point regularly.

44% base BS + size, red dot sight, Oath etc easily hit that +30% bonus cap for a 74% total
Firing on Full Auto (10 rounds used, 40 remaining on clip) with standard ammo (Pen 6). Disregard the lowest damage dice (Tearing quality)

Edit: Forgot to change my damage bonuses from +12 to +10 due to Flesh Is Weak no longer applying
