I just figured out how to track experience last week.
Oi!

To review for everyone -- each skill (or whatever it is that I called them) you have has its own experience. When that reaches a threshold (the next rank) you can, during a long rest, spend 1 check to rank up the skill (and you lose all experience it has gained, even if it has more than threshold- you can't bank it).

Did I do mine wrong? Also how do we "spend a check"? Is it a roll? What happens if we fail?

Quote:
Checks and Twists
Checks represent learning, vigor and good ol’ fashioned adventurer’s luck. Players begin each session with one Check.

Check’s can be spent whenever you are not in a Challenge to:
(1)Remove a Condition by spending a number of Checks as indicated on the Condition (see Conditions)
(2)Improve your Traits (see Training and Learning)
(3)Grant an automatic success on an Action which would require a Scab roll (spending a Check is as if you rolled a 1 on the Scab).

Players earn more Checks by adding a Twist to the story based on their character ’s personality, background, weakness, current conditions or traits (see Character Creation). A Twist is added by including Details in a description (for no additional dice) that makes the circumstance more difficult for your character. While this may be derived from your Belief or from your character’s background, it doesn’t have to be on the character sheet to be a good Twist. For example, a lifelong rival appearing on the scene is a great Twist. Twists are something that a character has to overcome (such as a fear or circumstance that goes against everything they believe).

Faced with such a scenario, a character must struggle to overcome it. When you add a Twist, no matter what rating your Active Trait has, your roll is compared against Rating 1 (only 1’s provide a Success). After you roll, you earn a Check. Within one Challenge, you may only earn a check from a specific Twist once (Weaknesses are an exception to this rule, see Character Creation for details). To earn multiple checks you will need to use many different Twists. You may only earn one Check per round of a Challenge.

You guys ever seen Shoot 'Em Up? I can't wait to see Vargas kill someone with this carrot!

"Shoot 'Em Up" death by carrot scene.

Going to step out of the game for now to save space on my forum list. Please re-invite me if it gets started back up.

It's been about 6 weeks. Has this game run off the rails?

I know Space went MIA and he was the next up to post. *shrugs*

Haven't really seen Candi around much either. But this game has been one of my favorites so I wish it would continue.

I'm glad someone posted to catch my attention. I've been cutting back on my games here because I need to focus on some other things, and this one was the only one I hadn't made a decision on. It's relatively low prep, as the system encourages GMs to have lots of freedom in their play; and it's fun. So, as some of you are keen on it, I think I can keep this one up (you all just might be playing a bigger role in story direction; but then, that's half the fun of such an open system ain't it?).

Glad to have this back up and running, I was really enjoying this game :)

:) So treat my last post as 'setting the scene'; and carry on as if it were a new round of the challenge. Difficulty still at 14, goal is to find the woman you've been searching for that is adjudicating the bounty on Vargas(?)

Candi says:
Jarveena - 2 successes (I can't recall off hand if XP is granted when success = failure)
The rules don't seem to cover situations where successes=failures, unless I've missed it. If I understand the XP system correctly, you gain 1XP when you roll more successes than failures. But it looks to me like I was awarded XP on certain occasions where I rolled more failures than successes:

1 Strike Success: 1 Experience in Deadeye Archer
1 Success: 1 Experience in Ninja
4 Success, 1 Failure: 1 Experience in Deadeye Archer
2 Successes, 2 Failures

Maybe I've got it all backwards? I better read through the rules again.

You've got it all backwards. It's more failures than successes. The design reason for this is because that way, no matter the outcome of the roll, the player will have positive 'feels'. Either you roll super good and make lots of progress (yay!) or you roll poorly, but then you get XP (yay!).

That said, I've clearly awarded XP on equal success and failure, so no reason to stop that now!

"Failing forward." I love it! :-)

Since I probably have everyone's attention in a bad way... you welcome.

Spaceseeker is still M.I.A. What do we do about that?
Jun 8, 2016 2:39 pm
I'm treating spaceseeker as inactive. We could recruit one more if folks wanted, or just keep on. I leave that up to you folks - do you want another party member?
Jun 8, 2016 4:14 pm
I think we're okay as is.
Jun 8, 2016 4:15 pm
I don't mind either way.
Jun 8, 2016 5:39 pm
Same as Jabes I'm good either way.
