Sorry about delays, I've been traveling a lot. I aim to get back to this before the weekend (I've just arrived home yesterday, and today I'm catching up on home stuff)

Jarveena now has 4 XP in Ninja, twice its current rating (2). How do I go about improving this trait? :-) The rules say I reset XP to zero and spend a Check. WHat do I need to do? Not sure if I have any checks other than the one you get at start of session...

We need to make a check with the Trait (I'm good XPwise for Pirate but I need to pass a check and use that to upgrade the trait) and reset the XP of the Trait.

Ok, so the "check" terminology is clearly confusing. A "Check" is a resource you can earn. You get a free check at the start of a "session" (so you all have 1), and checks can be spent for a variety of things (there's a section on them). Improving a skill can be done by spending a Check and setting the XP to zero.

Besides the free one, how else do you earn Checks? Primarily through your weakness. Bring your weakness up, so introduce it into the story, and this will earn you a check, it may earn you more than one depending on how long the weakness stays around (the GM will never introduce your weakness, you always bring it on yourself). While exposed to a weakness your skills are all treated as rating 1.

Note: Checks and Twists section on pg 11 has the details

So if I understand correctly, for this particular use of spending a Check to improve a trait I don't have to do anything in-game...I just change my Ninja rating to 3 and reset its XP to zero?

Yeah, and spend your check. If you still have the check you can just do that.

One of my design goals was to make advancement seamless and painless.

Also, if anyone looking over the check rules has an idea for a better name for that resource, please share. "Check" is borrowed from Mouse Guard (one of the game systems I was inspired by), and it's clearly not the best name (as it's already a common part of RPG terminology).

fyi I'll be on 'vacation' out of state starting the 1st going through to the 10th of July. I'll likely have time if I have service to at least keep up on reading threads if they progress but I make no promises on daily postings.

Just a heads up, between a Biker festival in the area a Fleetwood mac cover band this weekend coming to town (No idea who Fleetwood Mac is really but I love my wife so I might end up taking her) and Gen Con next week I'm going to call it I'll be spotty or not posting until after August 9th. Yes this is a blanket statement for all the games I'm in.
