Character Discussion

Below is the URL for the Coriolis free Quickstart from Fria Ligan (Free League) Publishing. It has the basic rules for the system, as well as a good general overview of the setting. Note that you still need the Coriolis core book to make a character. If you don't have the core book, message me and we'll discuss.

BEFORE CREATING YOUR CHARACTERS, PLEASE READ THE "GROUP DISCUSSION" THREAD.

Along with the group concept, there are two general options for how we can play this game. Either choice is fine with me.

The first option is that you are all freelancers or freebooters who are your own bosses; you work for whomever you please and, as a group, have no overriding affiliation (though individually, some of you might be associated with certain factions). This option allows for a mixed group and a more free form game. Keep in mind, however, that some factions are opposed to each other.

The second option is that you are all members of the same faction, and that you specifically do work/assignments for that faction. This type of game would be particularly mission-oriented but would be an easy method on constant employment.

Regardless of the choice, it's probably safe to assume that the player group forms the crew of its own small ship, and that most of you are based in or near the Coriolis station.

I'm up for either option, but going as freelancers would give us freedom of movement.

I was thinking of playing a character that's a mix of a Duelist/Bodyguard for a wealthy family. One day there was an attack and the family was killed during the incident. Now my character is looking for those responsible to avenge the family and restore his honor.

It could even be that he was considered responsible and now must dodge those hunting him, so that he may achieve the above mentioned goals.

That could definitely work.

I added a thread for the group concept. Check that out and see what you think. The game recommends thinking over the group concept first.

Might do a devout mystic of some kind. What are the mystical powers like?
Jun 9, 2020 6:47 am
Psychic powers are very low key in this game. There are only roughly ten powers, I believe, and they don’t have much application in combat; they simply give your character an edge. For example, telekinesis only lets you move objects of tiny size.

Also note that mystical powers are a fairly new phenomenon and frighten most people. The factions don’t know what to make of them. Consequently, most mystics live on the run or in hiding because the factions want to capture them, study them, or kill them. Some believe those with mystical powers have been blessed by the Icons, but just as many think the powers draw from the Dark Between the Stars (evil).

I am thinking about two possibilities...

A former combat medic who would have medicurgy skills and some combat training, or

A ship's mechanic with some basic piloting skill
Jun 10, 2020 1:58 pm
Either would be a valuable asset to the crew. I'm working on a Duelist/Bodyguard. I'm thinking some combat skills, possibly some vocal skills or piloting depends on what all he was assigned to do.

Okay, I'm thinking a Free League-associated data whiz and fast talker with an old debt to the Syndicate that she hasn't been able to pay off. I could go with some combat flavor too if it's necessary to round out the party.

I like it. The Data-Spider concept would be the way to go, I think.

I have absolutely no idea what I want to play, so I think I will just see what others want and then role fill after, if that's ok.

So just to get a general idea of what people are doing, here is a list of what I have been told so far. This is subject to change as I get more information.

Tarek Ahmed (Squadfather44) - Operative (Guardsman), ship's pilot

Brahim (ed...) - Humanite, Zenithian, Scientist (Technician), ship's engineer

Zahra (78RPMLife) - Data Spider associated with the Free League, ship's sensor operator

Farouk ibn Khalid al-Marwan (baldwin_brother_number_5) - Zenithian, Fugitive (Mystic)

No problem.

For what it is worth, the spaceship section says these are the 5 crew positions and these are the skills for each

◆ Captain (Command)
◆ Engineer (Technology)
◆ Pilot (Pilot)
◆ Sensor Operator (Data Djinn)
◆ Gunner (no specific skill that I can discern from the rules)

My character can be the engineer
The data whiz can run the sensors (requires Data Djinn skill)

So we could use a gunner, pilot, and captain (unless we choose not to have a fearless leader).

The fugitive mystic would have a high empathy and purely from a game mechanics point of view this would be good for a Captain, since Command is an empathy based skill. If that doesn't fit your character concept that's cool, no pressure - just a suggestion.

Squadfather44 - will your bodyguard duelist have the Pilot skill or do we need a pilot? do you want to be captain or gunner?

I was thinking of going with some points in Pilot.

Since character creation seems to involve postdating and intertwining our backstories and relationships to an extent, I thought I would share my character concept

Brahim is a mutahadir humanite - he has been genetically engineered to be a cold, logical super nerd. This makes him great at Science and Technology but fantastically bad at Manipulation or anything else requiring Empathy. His personal problem is that he is incapable of guile, deceit, or lying - it is not logical and he can't wrap his head around it. He can't even do half-truths.

Assuming we are going with the rival twins patron/nemesis backstory... at age 10, Brahim was indentured/sold/contracted to Captain Ghabi who later began working for Khadija (our patron). Ghabi hated humanites; he abused Brahim and only tolerated his continued existence because Brahim was useful and cheap. This arrangement continued for nearly 10 years until Khadija became suspicious that Ghabi was betraying her.

Khadija had Brahim brought to her and when she asked questions he told her honestly what he had seen on the ship. Ghabi and the rest of the crew were "dealt with" and Khadija found herself with a ship and engineer in need of a new captain and crew (the rest of you all - however that happened). As a reward for Brahim's honesty, Khadija ensured that he would be a full status crew member (the better to monitor the new crew).

Brahim realizes that the Zenithians tend to be more tolerant of change, and therefore of humanites, so he generally supports the Zenithian Factions, especially the Free League which is a logical affiliate for a ship's engineer. He is not passionate or fanatical about supporting the Zenithians, nor is he filled with hate for the Firstcome Factions; he does not have those strong emotional reactions. It is a pragmatic choice.

His true loyalty is the the ship which has been his home for nearly a decade. He is generally loyal to Khadija for freeing him and to the new crew for treating him as a relative equal. He knows how bad things can be, and how good things are at the moment, so he is protective of the status quo. If one of you becomes the Captain he will be especially loyal and support your plans.

So that is Brahim's draft backstory - feel free to suggest connections with your character or edits to this backstory.

For example, maybe it was 78RPMLife's "Free League-associated data whiz and fast talker" who introduced Brahim to the Free League (since he was basically living in the ship his entire life, cut off from the world).

Nice! I can definitely work in with that. I just picked up a copy of the core book, so I'm going to push my way through that today and hopefully get a backstory written up soon.

I think I’ll be sticking with the mystic. I should have the character made today, and I’ll consider backstory and relationships.

I like the backstory for the ship, as proposed by ed...

It gives the ship a very "lived in" feel. I was definitely imagining this to be a used ship; one with a previous owner before your crew came into possessing it.

Using this backstory, we can also say that Khadija Jubal is the person to whom you all make payments for the ship.

Sounds great! I've got a rough draft for my character that I'll post in a little while
It's rough so beware of splinters.. :)

My character is Farouk bin Khalid al-Marwan. His concept is Fugitive with the Mystic sub-concept. Because of his abilities, he is pursued and feared by several factions and individuals.

I chose Clairvoyance as his power. This means he has visions. I figure this could be useful for the group as his visions can help find things. It seems like a good reason why the crew keeps him around and helps hide him from authorities.

I see Farouk as once being a really bad person. Probably a criminal of some kind. Not very pious. And then he starts having visions. When his power begins manifesting, he has a religious awakening of sorts. He thinks his visions were given by the Icons. Now, years later, he is a reformed criminal who is very devout and trying to make up for some of his past deeds. The crew and its patron help hide Farouk and move him from place to place. In return, he helps them find things with his visions.
