Slavery has many faces :) I was thinking something close to indentured servitude but the life debt has such a nice neo-bedouin feel to it. Maybe it could be a mix of both. Sani has no clue what Aldair did for her tribe, but it was so immense that she, and many some others, was given to honor the life debt. At least that's the tribe's point of view. Aldair's point is more likely to be that of keeping an important hostage to ensure the full collaboration of the tribe in keeping a safe and free trade (or smuggling) running smoothly. Because slavery is not legal in Coriolis, it could be disguised as indentured servitude, meaning that, there is a price tag for freedom.
I'm reading the rules so I may change some details here and there as I get a better feeling for the setting. I'll submit the final version once all PCs are done and we're ready to start. For example, I've unsure which would be better: plebeian (nomad) or privileged (educated). So there may be a last minute change there :D
