Character Creation

Mar 22, 2016 11:02 pm
This is where we'll be discussing what we want as far as characters go, how to create them, and anything else we can think of concerning your characters. You're all residents of the Village of Falu (whether born there or arrived at a later time is up to you).

Any of the classes and races found in the Basic Rules for Dungeons and Dragons are fine as well as anything in the Player's Handbook (no Drow, Dragonborn, Tieflings, or Half-anything).

For stat generation you have your choice of the 27 point buy system or the six 4d6 method. If you take the rolling option please roll here (in this forum) so we can all share in your joy or laugh at your terrible luck. If you roll and end up with numbers you do not like you can take the standard array for your stats (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8).

If you have ANY questions (or aren't sure where to start) please feel free to ask.

Play with die roller as well. When posting hit the "Advanced" button at the bottom. This will take you to a different editing window that will allow you to add rolls to your post (and ensure that I have the settings correct).

Rolls

Test Roll - (1d20+6)

(19) + 6 = 25

Remember to drop the lowest value from each of your rolls when doing the 4d6. Still decent numbers with those.

Now Stat rolls adjusted for dropping lowest value:

Test = 8
Stat roll 1 = 8
Stat roll 2 = 12
Stat roll 3 = 14
Stat roll 4 = 11
Stat roll 5 = 12
Stat roll 6 = 8

I'd like to play a halfling druid, but if druid isn't okay with ya, I'll play a halfling cleric.

Okay the character is submitted. I didn't copy out every perk associated with the race and class, and I did apply racial bonuses to the ability scores. Let me know if everything okay and what I need to change. T'anks.

Volimance - Halfling Druid will work just fine, even if he is an exceptionally ugly little fellow. :-) He's been approved.

Everyone Else - I'm going to post more of a step by step guide for going through D&D character creation here on GP sometime this evening or tomorrow. If you haven't done anything like this before there can be a lot to take in.

While this is specifically about Volimance's character I'm going to use this as an opportunity explain a couple things to everyone.

Volimance, looking over your character sheet I see a couple of things...

1) You cheated yourself out of your proficiency bonus. Add a '+2' in the 'Proficiency Bonus' field. This will add the bonus to the appropriate skills automatically. (Skills that you're proficient in get your proficiency bonus added to skill checks. Everyone starts with a +2 PB)

2) Mark the saving throws that you're proficient in, the sheet will add the '+2' bonus to that as well. In a Druid's case these would be Intelligence and Wisdom.

3) Weapons. You'll want to add your staff and dagger under the 'Weapons Section' for easy reference.

Quarterstaff:
- Your attack bonus would be your STR modifier + your Proficiency Bonus (as you're proficient with the Quarterstaff)
- Damage is 1d6-1/1d8-1 (You get the 1d8 because the staff is marked as 'Versatile', which means you can use it two handed)
- Notes: Bludgeoning, Versatile

Dagger:
- Your attack bonus would be your DEX modifier + your Proficiency Bonus (as you're proficient with Daggers) Since a dagger is marked as 'Finesse' you can choose either STR or DEX as your weapon modifier.
- Damage is 1d4+2
- Notes: Finesse, Light, Thrown (20/60)

4) SPELLS! Druids start with 2 Cantrips, WIS+LEVEL 1st level spells, and two 1st Level Spell Slots.

5) Feats and Abilities: Most of the time I won't copy all of the details for these types of things (your Outlander background provides some cool abilities) but it is nice to put a title and page reference in the given area. Helps me as well when I'm running things so I can quickly check on neat things your character might be able to do.
For reference here's a couple character sheets that have been filled out here on GP.

Elfog Oakshoulder - Barbarian
Vad Fekete - Sorcerer

Anyone else have any ideas as to what they'd like to play?

Yikes! Guess I have some work to do tonight!

OK starting with Szemely's recommendation and rolling stats to see what I have to work with.

Remember if your rolls don't do it for ya, you can always fall back on the standard array for your stats.
Mar 25, 2016 4:50 am
Yeah so dropping the lowest I have, 7, 11, 9, 9, 12, and 13.

Um I'll go with the standard array. Ha guess that's my roll luck.

Remember to add your racial bonuses to your attributes after you select your race. (Humans can add +1 to each attribute!!)
Mar 25, 2016 11:27 pm
I was thinking human! It would be a good choice to boost the average stats. Either paladin or fighter.
Mar 25, 2016 11:34 pm
One of my favorite PCs right now is a human fighter. Lot of cool options (even spell casting) when you gain a couple of levels.
Mar 27, 2016 3:47 am
I am going with a human fighter. I will try and get a character sheet up no later than Monday. I think I'll use the +1 to everything and the soldier background since it will fit the story you have started laying out.

Excellent. And for a reference, here's my Human Fighter's character sheet (with a soldier background as well)

How's everyone else coming along? If you have any questions just fire away with them...

(I'm gonna work on the corrections tomorrow, hopefully I'm not holding you up too badly)
