Prologue: Trouble in Paradise

OOC:
It looks like we're about ready to go. I'm going to go ahead and post the beginning of the prologue here, and you guys can start posting whenever you are ready. :)
The Island Empire of Olera has enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity ever since The Paladin King Roland the First destroyed the regime of Dread Lord Damos and sent his monstrous armies scattering into the wind.

It is now 100 AD (After Damos), and the Freedom Celebration is in full swing in the village of Dewfall. King Roland the Fourth has petitioned the guilds and asked for a party of adventurers to meet an archaeologist by the name of Perrin Highhill and escort him and his discovery from Dewfall to the castle.

The road from Olera Imperia to Dewfall is long, but largely uneventful. Small bands of goblins are seen, but they scatter quickly when they see the size of the merchant caravan and circus that the six of you are travelling with. Four days of travel, and nothing of note happens. Each night, you bed down to the sounds of the bards playing their instruments and the acrobats tumbling across the field.

Upon arrival in Dewfall, it's not hard to tell that the people are in full celebration mode. Children are dancing around Maypoles, there are games and prizes, and there's a steady stream of patrons going in and out of the Busty Bar Maid, a quaint tavern just off of the town square.

The merchants are setting up their wagons, and the performers have begun a retelling of the old war story. We now turn to you, adventurers. What do you do?

edit: Forgot an important piece of information there...changed bit of info is in bold.

I do not believe i have ever visited this town before. As such i need to find the the temple to the gods here. Introduce myself to the local clergy and spend some time in worship.

"Great, I thought we'd never get here. I can't remember when I last spent so much time out in the wilderness, camping under the stars. Hate it. Who wants a drink? I might even pay. I'm feeling generous." I take in the sights and colors around me. They're blindingly bright. "Well isn't this... cheery."
Mar 30, 2016 1:56 pm
"I would love to join you in revelry and merry making Xulara, but i must meet the local clergy and put in a bit of time with the devine before hand. Tell me where to meet you in an hour or so and I will be there."

The bold for character speak works great, i am stealing it.

I'm going to wait to move forward from this point until I get a post from everyone, to give DJForeclosure a chance to finish up Maia's backstory and make sure we're all on the same page. I will, however, answer general questions about what the party can see from where they're standing at the village gate.

Thanks for indulging my detail-obsessed oddness. Sorry folks, I'll get there!

Is there an area of the town visibly for religious use?

Roughly how big is this town?

As an immigrant i have never partaken in a "freedom celebration" so any of the local customs i can observe and learn would be interesting to me.

A wide smile spreads across Garn's face at Xulara's offer, "I'll take you up on that offer! Can't turn down free drink!"

It's not a problem! I mainly started this post to get a leg up on things.

There is a temple visible past the village square, and it is the tallest building in the village. Very easy to see, but there are no obvious symbols to tell which deity it is dedicated to.

Roughly 2000 people in population, but there are easily more than that here currently for the Freedom Celebration. Many people have set up camps and "tent towns" outside of the village walls, to save money on tavern fees.

The story of how Roland the First defeated the Dread Lord Damos, which is being retold Ember Island Players style, may be of interest to you.

Dahlia heads for the large temple. First things first, and then to learn about this local tradition.
Mar 30, 2016 3:13 pm
"Sure Dahlia. Do what you gotta do." I roll my eyes when she leaves and join Garn as we walk towards town. "The damned gods have never done nothing for me. I guess some people just like to hold onto childish fantasies. So, the Busty Barmaid, then?"

Dahlia hurries along, intent to get her worship time in and then rejoin the group.

Garn nods, "Sounds like a fine start to me!"
Mar 30, 2016 7:59 pm
"I'm not too picky. Anyone else want to join, follow me!" I make my way towards the tavern, keeping an eye out for the usual pickpockets that target new folks with heavy coinpurses, or anything else of interest.

Turning towards my nearest compatriot I say, "Hey, when are we supposed to meet Highhill? You don't suppose he's in a hurry? We just got here and I'd love to indulge a bit."

Happy that they get to spend some time away from the caravan Hegy takes a few moments to take in the sights. "Busty Bar Maid? Subtle!" she laughs to herself before hearing Xulara's offer to buy drinks. "Busty Bar Maid it is!"

Toshi sits perched atop one of the caravan wagons, toying with one of his throwing knives. His eyes narrow in the depths of his hood as he listens to Xulara and the others talk, and watches some of them make for a tavern. He is not usually one for merrymaking, especially not in these parts, where racial prejudice runs deep and one of the catfolk is likely to get strung up in a bag and thrown in some river to drown. In his experience, large crowds in a "celebratory" mood can very quickly turn into an ugly mob.

Toshi wishes this Perrin Highhill would arrive already so they can go about their business. It feels strange being tasked with protecting someone instead of making sure they breathed their last. But that is the price of the guise of legitimacy that a membership in the Explorers' Guild affords.

He has been studying his new companions during their travel here, gauging their strengths and weaknesses. It is sometimes hard to puzzle out seasoned adventurers. Xulara in particular intrigues him. The way she moves, the way she carries herself, Toshi can tell she possesses a similar skillset as he. And he is sure that she has puzzled out his true race as well as his true profession. And yet he does not know her from the Guild of Assassins. An outlander then? Best to watch that one closely.

Things officially start on Friday, April 1. This gives me the time I need to finish putting together the NPCs needed and everyone else the time needed to finish putting their characters together.

Alright, let's get going. This'll be fun.

Xulara, Garn, and Hegy all head toward the Busty Barmaid, and find a packed house in full festival mode. There's one table surrounded by men who are arm wrestling each other, where it appears bets are being placed all around. Another group of tables are set up around an impromptu stage, where there sits a minstrel who is playing his lute to the thrilled enjoyment of those around him. Another table has a game of dice being played, and it appears that a few people have left that table grumbling about "damned Halfling luck".

Outside, Toshi and Maia, the merchants that you rode with are getting set up, and no sooner than some of them have parked their wagons than people start lining up to sample their wares. There is also some sort of "fighting ring" set up in the town square, where people can test their skills in the "strongman tournament" with wooden practice weapons.

Dahlia, when you arrive at the temple, you can see that it is a general purpose temple to honor all of the Goodly Deities, and many of the Neutral. Shrines to each deity line the wall, their holy symbol prevalent in the stained glass window above each one. A priest in a fully hooded set of robes walks to each shrine, collecting the offerings there and placing them into different bags. There aren't any parishioners here, as everyone is out enjoying the Freedom Celebration. Saerenrae's shrine is very easy for you to find.

Maia looks around, trying best she can to judge her surroundings. After a bit she strides off toward the Busty Barmaid, looking to see if there might be some kind of job board. Perhaps she can use some of her magic or even writing skills to gain a little extra coin before we meet with Highhill.
Apr 2, 2016 11:16 pm
"Halfling luck? My guess is there's a little something more than luck going on over there."

Without leaving the others Hegy will take a look for the lucky halfling. If she can find him from her current position she'll use a 'Detect Magic' cantrip centered on his table, just to see if there's more than just the halfling's luck at work.
